Town To Begin Broadband Fiber Construction Downtown In late September or early October of 2020, Estes Park Power and Communications will begin construction to run broadband fiber in the downtown area along Elkhorn Avenue. This construction will occur in phases and is the first step in making Trailblazer Broadband service available to downtown locations beginning in 2021. On Tuesday, September 1, 2020, at 4 p.m., Estes Park Power and Communications invites the community to attend a virtual public meeting to learn about project timing and construction details.

Nearly 100 Sponsors Propel The Estes Park Duck Race By: Rita DuChateau, Rotary Club of Estes Park Without sponsorships, there wouldn’t be an Estes Park Duck Race. Local businesses and citizen donors propel the event, supply the major prizes and help offset the costs of putting on fundraiser that has delivered over $2.7 million to Estes Valley nonprofits since its inception in 1989.

“As the Duck Race has grown, so has our list of Major and Associate sponsors as well our gratitude for their support,” said Scott Thompson, this year’s sponsorship coordinator. “Without their belief in our cause, we wouldn’t have a Duck Race.”

Major Sponsors donate $500 and Associate Sponsors donate $100. In turn, their contributions are announced in local media, on the Duck Race website, on the poster that advertises the race, in videos on the Facebook page that markets the event, and on Channel 8-The Rocky Mountain Channel on race day. Sponsorships are either paid or in-kind, which include donation of goods or services equal to or greater than the cash amount. If you ask sponsors why they sign on, of course, it’s for the decorated large plastic duck.

The sponsor ducks are proudly displayed after the race at places of business around the Estes Valley.

“We have been so humbled and blessed to have the support of our sponsors during this tumultuous year,” Thompson said. “Their backing has allowed us to switch gears and move from the typical physical race to a virtual race hosted on The Rocky Mountain Channel.

This will also give us a new way to recognize our Sponsors before and during the race.”

Budget Season Is Here By: Town Administrator Travis Machalek Budget season is upon us. Town staff have begun to work through the process of developing a recommended 2021 budget for Town Board consideration.

The Town's annual budget process begins in May of each year with a preliminary update to our Capital Improvement Plan.

This preliminary update is shortly followed by a discussion with the Town Board to help shape the coming year's strategic plan, which informs the budget development process.

In order to kick off the development of the budget itself, a "base budget" is created by the Finance Department that reflects the predicted cost of existing services for the coming year. This base budget is generally flat - no significant increases or decreases - except for anticipated cost increases in areas like materials, fuel, construction escalation and health insurance. After the base budget has been created, departments review the Town Board Strategic Plan and generate Service Level Proposals. These proposals represent changes in the way we do business and can add costs, reduce costs, add revenue and/or reduce revenue. The Executive Leadership Team (ELT) reviews the base budget and the Service Level Proposals together, then ranks and discusses the relative priority of each proposal in the context of our overall budget. Ultimately, the ELT discussion informs the final recommended budget that I am required by municipal code to submit to the Town Board.

The Town Board reviews the Town Administrator's recommended budget at two budget study sessions in October. These study sessions will continue to be open meetings; they will be streamed and recorded this year as they have in the past.

Public comment at this stage of budget development is requested through emails, letters and public comment during the public comment session at the beginning of each regular, Tuesday Town Board meeting. Two specific public hearings on the budget will be held in November and December when the Town Board considers the adoption of the budget.

Like many communities across the country, our economy has taken a significant hit from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Town acted swiftly in the early stages

of the pandemic to evaluate projected revenue losses and amend the budget for municipal operations to ensure financial stability in the face of those losses. Significant steps to reduce expenditures were taken, including: · A freeze on hiring most seasonal, parttime and full-time positions. This included 17 positions in the Police, Public Works, Events & Visitor Services and Community Development Departments; · Delay of the Comprehensive Planning process to 2021; · Reduced transit services in 2020; · Delay of the biennial Citizen Survey to 2021; and · Operational reductions for the Special Events Division.

To date, the actual revenue losses suffered have been significant - sales tax revenues were down 15.62% through June but much less severe than originally projected. Outpacing our conservatively high revenue-loss projections will allow us to rely less on a planned use of fund balance to continue operations and will strengthen the financial stability of our reserves. The better-than-expected revenues will also put the Town on relatively strong footing as we look toward next year's budget and the ongoing recovery efforts related to the pandemic.

So, what does next year look like? This is a difficult question to answer. Optimistic scenarios predict the availability of an approved and effective vaccine at the end of this year (here's hoping). More pessimistic scenarios have longer - in some cases much longer - timelines. With so much uncertainty, Town staff will be taking a conservative approach in creating the Town Administrator's recommended budget for 2021. It is much better to find ourselves in a situation where we have the flexibility to fund Town Board priorities at a mid-year check-in next year than to be in a position where we underestimate the continuing financial impacts of COVID-19 and have to enact further cuts.

Power Outage Sept. 21 Will Affect Areas Near Of Fish Creek Road Estes Park Power and Communications has scheduled a power outage on Monday, Sept. 21 along Fish Creek Road to allow the crew to work on electric infrastructure equipment for the new Water Division facility at the intersection of Brook Drive and Fish Creek Road. In order to perform this work as quickly and safely as possible, crews must turn off power to the affected area. The outage will begin at 9 a.m. and could last through 12 p.m.

The outageaffected area is along Fish Creek Road from Brook Drive to the Stone Bridge Estates Condos and will affect customers along Brook Drive, Avalon Drive, and Willow Lane to the west of Fish Creek and customers along Flower

Lane, Windham Drive, Johnsen Lane and Dandie Way to the east of Fish Creek.

Town Offices Closed Labor Day The Town of Estes Park will be closed Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of La-

bor Day. Staff will resume normal operating hours Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On August 23 at 11:12 p.m. police were called to a disturbance in the 1700 block of North Lake Ave. On scene they arrested a 38 year old female from Denver, Colorado and charged her with third degree assault and domestic violence and transported her to the Larimer County Jail.

On August 24 at 9:02 p.m. police stopped a 60 year old female driver from Estes Park in the 400 block of Steamer Drive and charged her with DUI. She was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On August 24 10:29 p.m. police issued a

summons for harassment to a 51 year old female from Estes Park in the 400 block of Elm Ave. On August 27 at 8:00 p.m. police were called to the 1000 block of Big Thompson Ave. where they issued a summons for theft to a 20 year old male from Sunnyside, Arizona.

On August 30 at 4:13 p.m. police took a 41 year old male from Denver, Colorado into custody in the 1400 block of Fish Creek Road. The male turned himself in to EPPD for crimes he committed in Longmont. He was transported to Longmont Police Department. No charges are pending in Estes at this time.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of August 23, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to 23 calls for service. This included:

Meadow Closure Times Extend During Elk Rut Season In Rocky Mountain National Park Beginning on September 1, park officials will put annual closures in place for travel on foot or horse off established roadways or designated trails from 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. In previous years, these closures were until 7 a.m.

The closure time has been extended to 10 a.m. this year, due to a significant increase in visitors approaching elk over the last two years when the morning meadow closures lifted. These closures last through October 31 and are effective in Horseshoe Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, Moraine Park, Harbison Meadow and Holzwarth

Meadow in Rocky Mountain National Park. Fishing in the Fall River, Thompson River or Colorado River within the posted areas remain the same as previous years and are closed from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The purpose of the closures is to prevent disturbance and harassment of elk during their fall mating period and to enhance visitor elk viewing opportunities. As always, elk calling and the use of spotlights or vehicle headlights for spotting wildlife is prohibited in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Estes Park Health September Flu Clinics Estes Park Health will be offering flu vaccine clinic on Saturdays in September on the 12th, 19th, and 26th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please call the clinic at 586-2200 to schedule.

In order to facilitate improved patient flow, we strongly encourage appointments. Walk-ins will be accommodated, if possible.

We will have clinic staff, including pediatric nurses, administering vaccines for infants six months of age and up. High-dose vaccine is avail-

able for those over 65 years of age.

In an effort to continue to protect our community and practice social distancing, we are happy to provide this important community service on Saturdays. Appointments will be made fifteen minutes apart. Families will be allowed to schedule in groups of six or less.

The Elizabeth Guild Adds Extra Donation Day In order to better serve the community, The Elizabeth Guild has added an additional time slot to drop off donations. The Guild will now accept donations Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. starting September 10th. We hope these later hours will help those unable to stop by on our current donation days, Wednesdays and Fridays between 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

This week I discovered there is a BoxHoarders Anonymous after all. It ends up there are lots of us out there who have never met a box we didn’t like. Members of B-H Anon don’t hold meetings and they don’t have a list of steps to overcome their obsession but they certainly provide support! Here is a sampling of what others had to say about the practice of box collecting [my comments are in brackets.]: • I am also a box hoarder. Since I’ve downsized and moved to a one-bedroom apartment, there’s no room for my boxes.

I just can’t give up my shoe boxes so under the bed they go. I used to mail birthday and Christmas presents in my saved boxes but now we order online and have the gifts mailed directly from the retailer.

[Rosemary A., to keep that pile under your bed from getting too big, perhaps you could start giving the thoughtful gift of a box filled with boxes. Who wouldn’t like that?] [Don’t answer that.] • Shoe boxes! The best of the best. [Jami K. neglected to say if she likes her shoe boxes empty or with shoes in them. I’m not sure a person qualifies for BoxHoarders Anonymous if the boxes she stockpiles have something in them.] • I did not know you had the box disease like I do! I have three piles throughout the house. Don thinks I’m crazy, but it’s very hard for me to put a perfectly good box into the recycling pile. [This is from Kris D., whose philosophy is, “out with the old, in with the new.â€? Kris redecorates her home almost as often as she replaces empty toilet paper rolls. She doesn’t hang onto anything.] [Except boxes.] • Another box hoarder! Jim and I laughed our way through this. Jim does have my permission and encouragement to move the worst of the pile along when they get too close to the furnace. Apparently I fear burning the house down even more than being without the perfect box.

(And, I have a secondary hoarding location in a closet away from his line of travel through the house.) It’s so funny, as I otherwise don't like a lot of stuff in my life—well, except for papers/files I have a hard time getting through and, lately, enough toilet paper to last as long as the Spanish flu. [Joan S., I nominate you to be president of Box-Hoarders Anonymous since you collect boxes and toilet paper.] • I always make it a point to recycle today the exact box I need a week from now. [Clyde M. has always been a planner. Case in point.] • I find it hard to part with boxes, too. I keep a stash “just in caseâ€? but the boxes I have are never the right size or shape for mailing whatever it is. [Joan A., meet Clyde M. ] I helped a friend move years ago; she had an entire closet filled, floor to ceiling, with boxes. [Atta girl! ]

• My favorite boxes are paper ream boxes—the ones you get copy paper in.

They are good and solid and have a fitted lid that comes off.

They’re a nice size to pack and not too heavy when loaded. The secret to boxes: [do tell!] They can be recycled, like paper, and easily replaced. If you need a box, buy some copy paper. [Karen J. is right.

Boxes that hold reams of paper are perfect for storing crafts. Need a box? Finish one of those craft projects you’ve been holding onto for when you don’t have anything else to do. Like when a pandemic shuts down the entire global population and you are forced to stay home.] • The number one item at craft fairs is— wooden boxes! [Marty T. has observed that people not only like to amass boxes, they like to make them—as if there aren’t enough out there already. Granted, wood boxes are particularly nice. Too nice, in fact, because the nicer they are, the more difficult they are to give away.] • We always had a big box box in the basement. I think it must have been a refrigerator or large appliance box—and it was full of boxes. [Carol C., did you ever play in that big appliance box before you filled it up with other boxes? See Sharon D.’s comment below.] • One of our favorites was going up to the furniture store and dragging home very large boxes. We cut out window and doors and drew beautiful curtains and pictures on the walls. After days of decorating and playing inside the rain would come and our little home melted like a snowman. [Sharon D., that sounds even more fun than lining up the kitchen chairs one in front of the next and playing Train.] • Question: if you were a box, how would you see yourself (box-wise)? [I think, therefore I am—a box. Is that what you mean, Bruce B.? ] We collect apple and pear crates from Costco. They are stackable to staggering heights. They have nice hand-holds and have served our family well as luggage during road trips.

We stack apple crates on hotel luggage carts to embarrass Allyson. Limit of one crate per person. [Embarrass her? Think of all the box hoarders who see Allyson, with all of those crates, as a rock star!] • And finally, from Charley H., my friend and long-time journalist, who just celebrated his 86th birthday with an outdoor, masked party: Once again, you made nothing something by writing about it. [That compliment is so flattering I want to box it up and never let it go.]

But for two local Estes Park High School graduates they are starting their college experience on campus with the help of the Estes Valley Board of REALTORS® (EVBOR).

Join us in congratulating Jennifer Johnson and Nathan Richardson, who both received scholarships in the amount of $1,500 to help offset college expenses from the EVBOR. Johnson is attending Colorado State University, moving to Fort Collins two weeks ago.

Richardson has relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where he is attending the Universal Technical Institute, which provides training for technicians in the

skilled trades industries.

The EVBOR is proud to be a part of this community and to assist students achieve their goals of continuing their education. Oven Baked Chicken and Biscuits 1 whole chicken, divided into pieces 1/2 stick butter Coating and seasonings for chicken: 1 1/2 tsp paprika 1 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp black pepper ½ tsp granulated garlic 2/3 cup Bisquick Original Biscuits made from Bisquick mix.

Heat oven to 425. Melt butter in 13 x 9 baking pan in oven. Meanwhile, shake chicken in paper bag with the coating. Place chicken in hot butter, skin side down. Tightly cover with foil and bake about 35-40 minutes. Uncover and turn chicken over, making room for the biscuits. Drop biscuit mix by tablespoons into the pan juices, alongside of the chicken and bake another 15 minutes or until biscuits are brown. A delicious result! I hope you enjoy our family dish.

Estes Park School District Emergency Meal Program Extended On August 31st the USDA announced that they will be extending the free meal program that ran this past spring and summer. This will allow any child under the age of 18 to receive a meal at no charge.

EPSD will continue to offer only drive-thru pickups at the Elementary School in the lower east parking lot.

Starting on Tuesday, September 8th, the meal pick-up days will change to Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Last Monitored Weed Drop-off September 26

The last Monitored Weed Drop-off for this season will be held Saturday, September 26 from 9:00 a.m. to noon located north of the Waste Management transfer station at 666 Elm Road.

Estes Land Stewardship Association (ELSA) volunteers will be on hand to answer weed questions at-a-distance and direct traffic flow. You will unload your bags into a loader bucket that will deposit them into the dumpster. Bring in your weeds in paper yard bags for free disposal – no slash, pine needles, trash, yard waste or dirt. Please remove/shake off dirt from plant roots.

Unauthorized drop-offs at this location ( with video surveillance) are considered theft of services. Weeds and trash can be disposed of year-around at Waste Management for a fee. No bags of non-weed materials will be ac-

cepted at this event. Paper yard bags are available for purchase at local hardware stores. These events are being made possible with the support from Estes Land Stewardship Association, Town of Estes Park, Larimer County, Estes Valley Land Trust, and donations. 2020 offers all of us the opportunity to celebrate not only the passage of the 19th Amendment but also the achievements of women over that last 100 years. Celebrations are planned nation-wide, in every state and in local communities. A number of local organizations and community leaders, under the leadership of Jean McGuire, have formed a committee to coordinate the local celebration under the title, “100 Years: A Celebration of Women.” As a part of the festivities, we plan to collect stories about Estes Valley women in the form of paragraphs. Submission period: now to August 26. Maximum length: 200 words, A story about any woman with a connection to Estes Park. These paragraphs will be collected by the Estes Valley Library. For more than thirty years, Michelle was the heart and soul of the post office. She was the person who met the mail truck in the morning, sorted the packages and put letters in the boxes.

She was fast and efficient at her work and used her incredible memory and detective skills to assure that all mail, even those addressed to “Grandma on Riverside” or “The shop with the Wooden Horse” got to the intended recipient.

Michelle’s heart and soul are devoted to music. An accomplished pianist, guitarist, and vocalist, she can play almost any keyboard and has been the

accompanist for almost every church choir and choral group as well as being the musician behind the scenes for many Fine Arts Guild Productions.

Michelle is an animal lover. She shares her Fish Creek Road home with cats, dogs, birds, and fish. She honored her eastern Colorado farm roots by adopting a pair of Scottish Highland cattle which she keeps on a small acreage near her second home in Allenspark.

Michelle lost her heart to Ed Wisner, who was her soulmate. She continues to believe in this motto. “Be Kind to Unkind People. They’re the Ones who Need it Most.”

It is with great regret that the Creative Colorado Tablesetting/Scaping Committee is notifying you of the cancellation of the 2020 event. We immediately scheduled the 2021 event for November 12-14, 2021 in the Library in the Lodge at the Stanley Hotel.

The decision was based on your responses to our survey (thank you), the vulnerability of our patrons, the stage of the pandemic, consideration for our sponsors, and in consultation with our venue. The camaraderie, discussing each setting with friends, and talking about the history behind the settings with each other—without that it would not be the same. This input lead us to the conclusion that it would be in the best interest of all to focus our atten-

tion on next year.

To those who had their setting ready, or were in the final stages of acquiring materials for their table, we welcome you to save them for our viewing in 2021. To those for whom this would have been your first entry, please keep your enthusiasm going for next year.

We will be setting up a display in the Estes Valley Library entry window for the month of October to continue to keep the event in the forefront of the public’s attention. Support Group For Readers Did you know there are meetings for people who are addicted to reading books and talking about them? These are commonly known as book groups.

The Monday Book Group started as a Learning Exchange class in the mid 1980s.

Our first meetings were in the evening and we have had breakfast meetings and now we are meeting in the afternoon. We have met in the Library and at various restaurants and now with social distancing, we are currently meeting outside.

Anybody who likes to read is welcome.

The first meeting of the 2020/21 season will be Monday, September 7 (Labor Day) at 3:30 p.m. at the River Rock gazebo at mile marker 6 on Moraine Road, west of Coffee on the Rocks. At this meeting, we will talk about a “book of choice.” This can be something you've read this summer or a favorite book from any time in your life.

The round robin discussion gives us all a chance to get to know returning or new members.

We will also choose titles or authors to read throughout the year. Community Bible Study Is Celebrating 45 Years Community Bible Study (CBS), a national and international Bible Study, is 45 years old this September, and 28 years old here in Estes Park. A milestone celebration has been in the works for several years.

“There was a lot of anticipation and excitement about celebrating with everyone this year,” says Robbi Telfer, Teaching Director of the Estes Valley Evening CBS Class. “When we couldn't meet in groups together last Spring, we were all wondering what our 45th anniversary year was going to look like. Since then, like many of us, I've done my share of ‘doom-scrolling’ the headlines. I think the most accurate headline I've seen was: 'Dear World, you're not going to have the year you thought you'd have.' That sums it up.

Our celebration and our classes won't look like we thought they would this year. But that’s okay. God's word never changes, and CBS is still the same indepth Bible Study it's been for 45 years. And people are still eager to study the Bible and share together. So I'm excited to see what the Lord will

do in all this.”

“Part of the national celebration plans included all of us in the US studying the Gospel of John this year,” adds Sarah Snyder, the newly-trained Teaching Director of the Estes Park Day Class. “They chose this study because it's the book the organization started with in 1975 in the Washington DC area. It's hard to imagine a better book to be studying right now.

It's full of encouragement and the reminder that no matter what is going on, God is still in control.”

The two CBS classes begin in midSeptember in a virtual format. “The CBS global organization has worked with Zoom to come up with a videoconferencing platform that provides the flexibility and stability and security we need,” Telfer explained. The small discussion groups (called core groups) will meet with Zoom, and the teachings will be video-taped for “on demand” viewing through the CBS membership system.

The schools in Estes Park are also doing online classes, as is the options

program for homeschoolers. “The Children and Youth program has been our biggest challenge,” Snyder remarked. “That's a lot of online viewing for the kids, so we've put together a modified program with short videos, individually-packaged, user-friendly crafts, and workbooks. The program is still available for children from babies to 6th graders, but in this modified, flexible format.”

Studies begin on Monday, September 14. The co-ed Evening Class will continue to meet virtually on Mondays. The Evening group has core groups for men, women, a new co-ed core, and a teen core. The Day Class is a women's and children's class, and will begin meeting virtually starting September 15.

Every once in a while, I get something right.

Last week I wrote about how Joel and I have become much more self-sufficient when it comes to the food we purchase and prepare in our kitchen.

Currently, one of my favorite culinary adventures is making and smoking our own bacon from fresh pork bellies.

While I’ve loved the flavor of our initial attempts, I’ve felt frustrated when it comes to packaging the finished product. My slices were either too thick, or in some cases, more like bacon hunks rather than slices. So, one night while we were cooking something completely unrelated, Joel mentioned he wished that we had a meat slicer and suddenly my feeble brain was overcome with inspiration. While such a machine could have a myriad of uses ranging from slicing roasts, cheeses, and our homemade bread, it would definitely solve my bacon-cutting dilemma.

So, I began researching slicers and found one that I thought would meet our needs and the chosen device arrived a week or so ago. All of my friends know that World War I artifacts are my primary obsession, but kitchen appliances and accessories rank a close second. For me, if there is anything positive that has come out of the Pandemic, it’s that I’ve started using a number of the dust-covered devices stashed away on shelves in our utility room. Most of the appliances in our cupboards are of no interest whatsoever to my husband, but he admits a fascination with our Thermomix, the Sous Vide, and can’t get enough bread from the Zojirushi or ice cream from the Cuisinart machine.

Normally when packages from Sur la Table, Williams-Sonoma, and Le Creuset arrive on our doorstep they are greeted with an immediate scowl that eventually covers Joel’s entire face. This particular 35-lb. box was met with that same disdain. But when I mentioned it was actually intended for him, it piqued his interest and before I knew it, he’d opened the box.

Don’t miss them when they return to the Legion.) Ironically—for reasons I promise to explain—my primary job turned out to be making panini sandwiches. They were actually quite tasty: turkey, Swiss cheese, blue cheese, and apples. The irony comes from the fact I’d taken with me a panini press that’s been in our house for about six months and has never been used. Now that I know how it works, I guarantee the device will be on our counter on a regular basis. But I digress. That night when I returned home, I realized Joel was genuinely interested in the slicer when I found the unit assembled, oiled, and ready to be set in the space we’d cleared for it. Much to my surprise, I discovered he’d even taken the time to read the instruction manual.

After explaining to me the care, cleaning, and maintenance required to use the slicer, Joel told me quietly, “I love this machine.”

Since I tend to be a klutz, the 10-inch blade is of particular concern to him. I have to smile because this warning is coming from a man that I purchased a Harley-Davidson multi-purpose knife for a number of years ago at a charity auction. At that time, his immediate reaction when I handed him the knife was not one of appreciation, but rather, “You know I’ll cut myself.” Within minutes he did.

So—we have an adventure ahead. I look forward to learning how to slice our own luncheon meats, cheeses, vegetables and so many other things.

There will be meats for beef stroganoff, fajitas, stews, soups... The sky’s the limit. Plus, it’s an interesting juxtaposition to see a state-of-the-art slicer and a modern-day breadmaking machine sitting side by side on an antique cast-iron Kalamazoo stove that was produced in 1928. My greatgrandmother’s turn-of-the-century coffee grinder is sandwiched between the two devices, adding yet another touch of nostalgia. Ah, yes: This will be yet another Buttonbelly Farm experiment and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. The next slab of pork belly is currently curing in the refrigerator, will soon be ready for the smoker, and then (gulp) slicing. Wish us luck.

Center Stage School of Dance Opens Registration For Fall 2020 Sessions

Get those remote-learning students out of the house for some exercise and bring them into the studio this fall.

Center Stage School of Dance & Gymnastics has opened registration for the nine-week fall session of classes.

Weekly classes are offered to students ages three through adult, and beginners are always welcome. The fall session of classes starts on Monday, September 21st and continues through November 20th. We offer multiple levels of classes in Ballet, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Tumbling and Gymnastics. New this fall, we are also offering a Zumba Kids class to elementary school students taught by Miss Megan, and we are also excited to offer our Jr. and Sr. Competitive Dance Teams for the 2020-2021 season.

Center Stage will be practicing COVID safety guidelines and restrictions set by the Larimer County Health Department to ensure a safe environment for your student to learn.

Class sizes will be limited to 10 students to allow for physical distancing in the studio (no exceptions will be made to this 10-student maximum class enrollment so pre-registration is required). All students and instructors will follow mandatory mask requirements and Clorox/Disinfectant will be used on equipment/barres at the beginning/ending of every class that utilizes any apparatus. Hand sanitizer will be provided to students for use at the start/end of every class as well as a non-contact thermometer for those students that did not have their temperature taken at home before entering

the studio for their class. Your studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safety is a priority to us.

Weekly classes start out at only $9 per class and vary slightly in price, based on the length of class chosen. Thanks to the generous student scholarship donation made earlier this summer by Sweet Basilico Italian Restaurant/Perez family, as well as the 2019 Estes Park Duck Race donations, financial aid scholarships are still available to children that need assistance with their 2020 fall tuition.

“UNDER-ACHIEVING? OR AN ‘OVER-EXPECTING’ WORLD?” A little boy completed writing his assigned confession, ‘I’m an under-achiever’, ten times, on the blackboard, punishment for what his teacher deemed lack of effort.

Returning to his desk, he turned to his teacher and said, sullenly, “I’m not an ‘underachiever’, you’re an ‘over-expecter’!”

When we stop achieving long enough to think about it, our world is full of ‘overexpecters’. They are in every profession, most schools and businesses, and, noticeably right now, in a majority of people thinking of current events and the upcoming election. To an ‘over-expecter’ enough is never enough. There’s always need for improvement, always an area or two that isn’t quite up to snuff, always something to criticize. When you’re around them you get the distinct impression that you will never please them, no matter how hard you try. And you never will. Over-expecters don’t always say that but it is clearly evident in their frowns and glares.

Sadly, all-too-few people have the courage of the little boy to tell over-expecters when to back off. Because few lack that courage, sad things keep happening: a little child loses his love for art when told time after time to ‘not color outside the lines’. Parents are often over-expecters. A wife’s joyful service in the home erodes because it seems she can never please the man she married. Spouses are often over-expecters. Gifted and competent employees lose heart because the boss can’t find it in his heart to say, ‘Good Job’. Employers are often over-expecters. First-responders throw in the towel because no matter how they step up, even risking their lives in service to others, they are scrutinized and criticized for that service. Qualified people in public office refuse to ‘run again’ or step aside because a demanding electorate is never satisfied, leaving less conscientious, experienced and qualified people to step in and govern poorly.

So, what’s the answer? It is different when we’re talking about our expectations of ourselves and that of others. We should demand more than mediocrity when considering ourselves. The Bible says: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.”

The old adage: “‘Good’, ‘better’, ‘best’, never let it rest until your ‘good’ is ‘better’, and your ‘better’, ‘best’”, is a good one, unless we find ourselves being an ‘over-expecter’ of even ourselves, demanding more than we are capable of delivering.

When it comes to our expectations of others we sometimes find that we expect more of others than we ask of ourselves. Remember what Jesus said about ‘trying to remove a ‘speck’ out of someone’s eye, when we have a ‘plank’ in our own? Jesus spoke of ‘over-expecting’ religious leaders who ‘bind heavy loads on people but do not lift one finger to carry them themselves’. Rather, we choose to follow the example of Christ Who invited: “Come unto me and rest, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

When we think of ‘over-expectancy’ six words can be very helpful: Honesty; Reality; Acceptance; Tolerance; Acknowledgment; Encouragement. ‘Honesty’ demands that I have examined myself to see if I would be willing to do what I am asking others to do. I recently commended a young Eagle Scout candidate because, in doing his ‘project’, he didn’t ask his fellow-scouts to do what he himself wouldn’t do. ‘Reality’ reminds me that I realize what I am asking of another is no more than he is capable of. ‘Acceptance’ and ‘Tolerance’ are spirits that appreciate the efforts and accomplishments another has put forth. ‘Acknowledgment’ of all the effort and intentions of what has been tackled and accomplished will be followed by words of ‘Encouragement’, which, hopefully, will be echoed by others who are appreciative of the efforts that have been made as well.

For all of us, we need to be a ‘Barnabas’ (in the Bible) whose name means ‘Son of Encouragement’. Is that us? Or are we an ‘over-expecter’? If that is true, heaven help those who are continually discouraged by our failure to appreciate.

Elvin And Constance Spreng To Celebrate 65th Wedding Anniversary

Elvin and Constance Spreng will celebrate their 65th Wedding Anniversary on September 11, 2020.

They were married September 11, 1955 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Loveland Colorado. Elvin and Constance retired from 45 years of farming in Loveland, CO and moved to Estes Park in 2000.

Their family includes three daughters, Carla, Lynelle and Mary Kay, and four Grandchildren. Carla and her husband Drew Webb are residents of Estes Park, CO. Carla’s son, T.J. Nathan lives in Denver, CO, and her daughter Jamie Nathan lives in

Westminster, CO. Lynelle and her husband Frank Loriaux are residents of Boise, ID and her son Todd Hansen and fiancé Joanna Hunt live Seattle, WA and Daughter Jill and her husband TC Franklin live in Los Angeles, CA. Mary Kay and her husband Don South are residents of Custer, South Dakota.

Weasels will run around large territories searching for prey in dens, burrows and under rocks.

Capturing a portrait of a weasel is no easy feat for these predators that cover miles of territory in search of food.

Weasels are adorable looking critters but they are ferocious hunters that are skilled at capturing and killing prey in tight spaces, like under rocks on the alpine tundra.

Although weasels are considered nocturnal, they can often be seen in the shadows of rocks at dawn and dusk hunting for prey.

You never know when a weasel might pop up from the rocks near you.

Although tough to watch, it is amazing to know that a weasel can prey on animals up to ten times their size.

Like many organizations and individuals, Estes Park Health’s income has been severely impacted by the arrival of the coronavirus. Based on current experience and financial projections, we antic-

ipate a 20% reduction in revenues through 2020, into 2021 and perhaps beyond. In response to this serious financial impact, Estes Park Health has been strategically evaluating all services and personnel to determine how we can reconfigure ourselves to be a sustainable and vibrant organization that provides outstanding services addressing the healthcare needs of our community and visitors, now and into the future.

National Center for Health Statistics data show that percent bed occupancy in nursing homes like the Estes Park Health Living Center has been declining over time. This is partly the result of more people choosing to age at home. According to Doug Farmer, the CEO of the Colorado Health Care Association, the pandemic has been associated with further

nursing home occupancy decreases of 15 to 40 percent.

The Estes Park Health Living Center’s experience has been consistent with these national and Colorado trends as bed occupancy percent has declined over time. There has been an additional decrease in bed occupancy of about 30% this year. Currently, less than half of the 52 licensed beds in the Living Center are occupied. The Living Center’s 2020 financial loss is projected to be about $1.4 million, a loss of about $56,000 for each of the residents. We do not expect the trends in bed occupancy decline and financial loss to change, and that is the source of the challenge we are facing.

Stories Of The Busy Season At Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

The busy season is always intense here at Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. With COVID-19, it’s been even more so this year. But through it all, we’ve treated more than 2,500 patients so far, and, as always, have some compelling stories to tell.

Here are just a few animal tales from Greenwood from this summer: Rocky, the Orphaned Ground Squirrel A couple was enjoying a stroll in Estes when they encountered a tiny, striped furball on the trail. Upon closer inspection, they discovered it was a baby golden-mantled ground squirrel! The two thought the young squirrel was dead. But when they tried to set it to the side of the trail, it moved. They left it under a little shade and continued their walk to allow time for mom to come back. After a few hours, they returned to find him still curled up in the same spot. They searched online about where to bring wildlife in need and found Greenwood. Since our center was closed for

the night, they scooped the baby into a box and took him home. They brought him to Greenwood the next day, where he was treated for dehydration and maggots in his ears. He enjoyed sweet potato,

tion, and fed him. The next day we heard that the house next door also had a little marmot! Given these mammals don’t live at low elevations, we knew they had to be siblings. The second pup soon arrived, and the two were reunited. They graduated from eating formula to dandelions, sweet

Marmots in Arvada A man in Arvada was doing yardwork when he heard a ruckus behind his shed and found an unfamiliar furry mammal. He texted his wife with a picture saying, “There’s a beaver in our backyard!”, but he soon noticed that the animal lacked the iconic dam-building tail. It was an adult yellow-bellied marmot. Shortly after, his wife saw a marmot run from beneath her car at work – their backyard visitor! These creatures are notorious hitchhikers. Several days after seeing it flee, the wife noticed a little ball of fluff on a walkway in their backyard – it was a baby marmot.

When he came to Greenwood, the little marmot was emaciated and lethargic. We immediately warmed him up, gave him fluids for dehydra-

potatoes and oats and are vocalizing like crazy. It’s no surprise that the species has earned the nickname “whistle pig.” After being at Greenwood for five weeks, they were transferred to a rehabilitator on the Western Slope with a single, young marmot.

Being very communal animals, they can’t spend their first winter alone. It will be great for the solitary baby on the Western Slope to have friends!

They will be released at a high elevation next spring.

Abandoned Baby Hummingbird It’s a pretty special experience when a hummingbird builds a nest near your patio. It’s even more unique for her to do so on a decorative strand of outdoor lights, and better yet if the same bird comes back year after year to raise her babies. Sadly, one day the mother stopped showing up, and they found one of the babies dead beneath the nest. They wrapped the remaining tiny one in a shirt and drove straight to Greenwood, feeling very grateful to have found us. The broad-tailed hummingbird spent eight days in our care,

before trying to rescue it. A surprising number of wild babies are unintentionally kidnapped by compassionate but misinformed members of the public. Their best chance for survival is always with their parents. In cases where young animals are no longer being cared for in the wild, Greenwood is here to help. Russian thistle is a multiâ&#x20AC;?branched bushy plant up to 3' tall. It is not a thistle at all, instead a member of the Goosefoot family with prickly bracts and spines on the stems. Russian thistle blooms into September with tiny green, white, or pink flowers, though the most colorful part of the plant is red spots and stripes on the stems.

Later in the season, the plant dries and breaks free from the ground to become the most common tumbleweed in the West, piling up along fences and obstructing roadways. Russian thistle can be toxic to livestock and may cause rashes and allergic reactions in people. To manage: Wear gloves and long sleeves to protect skin and pull plants. Bag and dispose if plant has buds, flowers or seedheads.

Getting Outta Town Hi Mom, Sorry this is about a week late but we just got back from a road trip. As you know, this year trips to Italy, Toronto and New York were canceled for my honeymoon, your grandson’s 50th birthday and our family reunion. I really needed to get outta town. This year that meant a road trip to Wyoming.

We were prepared with lots of car snacks like trail mix, dried bananas, peanut butter filled pretzels as well as great reading material and two prerecorded crime mysteries. Unfortunately, we forgot all our maps and tourist materials. It still felt so good to be on the road and away from every bit of responsibility. We went through some amazing places: the Snowy Range with red-tailed Hawks swooping above us, the magical Wind River Canyon softer and redder than my beloved Big Thompson Canyon and the winding Green River where we saw swans at a nature preserve. Our first stop was Saratoga for the hot springs – they had a large pool and a bunch of teepees with small pools. Naturally, my swimsuit wasn’t in any of my bags. I did have a bottom but no top for some reason. Digging around I found a hiking pullover made of that sun-resistant material so I just wore that. We stayed at the very western Saratoga Resort where I think Scott wanted to stay because they had a brew pub attached.

Lots of cowboy art, beautiful Navaho rugs and stuffed animal heads. On the road again and it was north to Thermopolis and Hot Springs State Park.

On our way we stopped at a rest stop and a guy in a bright, red pick-up ran into me and made a pretty big dent on the passenger side. I now have an appointment with a car repair shop next

week. The only good thing about that rest area was we were able to pick up a Wyoming map for free.

Thermopolis and the Hot Springs State Park was my choice as our hub town for three days. They had two private hot springs pools and a free city pool.

Scott liked that one because it was hot-hot, free and they kicked you out in 20 minutes.

That was about all the time he liked to spend in the hot springs. I loved the other ones because they were cooler and I could stay in the water all day for $10. Plus I was able to purchase a very nice black and white bathing suit. We spent a lot of luxurious down time walking and reading by the north-flowing Wind River. A couple hour drive to Cody was our day trip to visit the Buffalo Bill Center of the West – four museums in one big complex. The Buffalo Bill Cody Museum was great. I knew he almost wiped out all the buffalo and had a sketchy past but on the upside I didn’t know he was supportive of the suffragist movement. He paid women in his Wild West Shows the same as he paid the men. Bill was ahead of his time. We were also able to go to the natural history museum. We had been to a working dinosaur dig in Thermopolis (saw real dinosaur tracks!) so we were ready for some natural history of the area. Scott also went to the Whitney Western Art Museum but I’m not crazy about western art so, naturally I checked out the gift

shop and bought a teal T-shirt on sale.

Afterwards I realized it was on sale because it said Cody 2017 on the front.

After Cody we moved on to the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole. When we first saw the Tetons in early morning, they were glorious wickedly sharp looking across a sea of grass. Of course, we took pictures in front of the Cowboy Bar and the elk antler entrances to the town center park.

Fortunately, everyone was wearing masks and it wasn’t difficult maintaining distance. Then it was off to Teton Village for a two-night stay. After quite a bit of driving with Goggle Maps sending us in all different directions, we double checked the reservation.

Our reservations were at the Teton Valley Resort in Idaho, NOT Teton Village Resort in Jackson. So over the beautiful Teton Pass we went, laughing at our foolishness of not reading the fine print and stopping along the way for photographs of the mountains.

Pulling in to the resort, we noticed teepees, a small tent area and lots and lots of RVs. Small cabins made up the rest. A young woman handed us our keys that said either “day” or “dry” cabin, I couldn’t tell, and a map of the place with a red X marks the spot.

When we walked into the tiny-houseadorable cabin, exhausted from the day’s drive, all I wanted to do was fall upon the bed. And that would have been easy as a double bed filled the room. That was it. Nothing else. I

Ollie is an adorable 4-5 year old lab mix. He is 44 pounds and enjoys rolling in the grass, getting belly rubs and going for rides. Ollie walks very nicely on a leash. He get along fine with dogs but not very well with cats and would probably be happiest hogging all the attention. Ollie has been bounced around a lot, through no fault of his own and we are sure he will really enjoy settling down in a great forever home.

Jazz is currently living at the Pet Lodge. She is a very cute brown tabby who is a little bit shy, but sweet. She will do best in a quieter home She enjoys being loved and snuggling. She does not like other kitties but really seems to enjoy dogs!

Beans is a sweet, little buff colored five month old kitty. He is very outgoing and playful.

Mona is about 10 years old. and is very sweet and polite. She will be best as an only pet. She is scared of other kitties and we do not know how she is with

mean nothing else. Not even a bedside table with a lamp. I yelled out at Scott, “there’s no bathroom in here!”

“What? What do you mean?” “I mean there’s no bathroom in here!” “That can’t be right!” I immediately got on the phone. “There’s no bathroom,” I told the woman who answered where upon she told me, “that’s what a dry cabin is – no water.” A dry cabin meant walking across the way to a bath building. It meant sometimes having to wait when it was hard to wait. We gladly would have paid a little more for another cabin but there were no more cabins of any kind open. A Las Vegas family pulled in next to us. They too thought they’d be in Jackson and, like us, had no idea what a “dry cabin” was.

We decided to drive through Walden in northern Colorado on the way back and get off the Interstates. Heading back that Saturday and seeing the huge plume of smoke, we realized Walden was out of the question. Driving into Idaho and having to walk to a bathroom for a shower and getting hit in a rest area were minor compared to the now four Colorado fires. But we are in no danger so please don’t worry. And I guess that’s about all. Much love and hi to everyone, Mary.

P.S. Getting outta town is not always what you think it’s going to be. Even with the fires (and I hope and pray they’ll all be under control soon) travel has an added benefit - it is always good to come home after being away.

Nonprofit Ballet Renaissance will begin fall season classes online this year, parallel with Estes Park public schools, and in line with recommendations from medical professionals on the Ballet Renaissance Board.

Classes for children, teens and adults, will begin Tuesday Sept. 8 and will run through Friday Dec. 18, with tuition supported by Ballet Renaissance Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Adoptions.

Fund’s raised through Ballet Renaissance’s annual participation in the Estes Park Rotary Duck Race typically support spring costume and performance costs. This year, however, with challenges presented by COVID, things have been a little different. Although Ballet Renaissance was able to complete its spring 2020 class season by transferring all classes online beginning the week of March 16, COVID-

up dance spaces in their homes for online learning, complete with portable ballet barres and marley dance floor panels. Ballet Renaissance also hosted eight weeks of classes for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County's annual Estes Park summer program, and, together with Sol Roi Media, produced several creative video projects, available for viewing on the Ballet Renaissance Facebook Page.

“Things may look a little different this year,” shared Ballet Renaissance Founder, Ms. Brianna Furnish, “but we are excited about the new season, and inspired as we continue to create art together.”

Jaylene Howard Jaylene was active in her communities. She was an activist for Animal rights, and assisted The Fund for Animals in 1996 which helped stop the Spring Bear Hunt in Colorado. She was also active in Planned Parenthood and The Freedom from Religion Foundation.

In her spare time, she was an excellent seamstress making clothes for her granddaughters. In the 1970s, she took part in Olympic Qualifying Bicycle Races. The Howards were fond of Malamutes and raised 4 of their own.

Jaylene is survived by her husband Richard of Estes Estes Park resident Jaylene Howard Park, son Christopher Howard of died at her home Saturday August 22, Denver, CO, daughter Cynthia Coe of 2020. She was 83 years old.

Aurora, CO and brothers James Jaylene Flournoy was born June 17, 1937 in Kansas City, KS. Her parents Flournoy of San Antonio, TX and John Flournoy of North Kansas City, were James and Ina (Cardell) MO. She is also survived by three Flournoy. Margery Gooldy Sept. 6, 1930Aug. 23, 2020 “Be involved in something bigger than yourself ” – Marge Gooldy Loving wife, most adored mother and grandmother, devoted friend, and faithful, compassionate servant of God. Marge worked as a stewardess (when they were still called “stewardesses”), as an elementary school teacher, and as an assistant project manager at Westin environmental firm. But her most treasured occupations were those of wife and mother, and at these she excelled.

Marge is survived by her son Tom Gooldy and his wife Bev, her daughter Martha Gooldy Garcia and her husband Gil, and her daughter Ann Gooldy Gonzales and her husband Diego. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren David Gooldy and his wife Ashley (and their daughter Bekah), Tim Gooldy, and Jennie Rodgers and her husband Bob. Marge’s pure and simple faith in Jesus was the basis of all she did.

Marge and her husband Don volunteered for years with Crossroads Ministry in Estes Park; she was actively involved in Estes Park Summit Church, which she dearly loved; she joyfully opened her home and life to those in need, and her infectious laugh, sense of humor and smile were a blessing to all.

She explored the back roads of Ireland, Italy, Prague, and Quebec; she navigated the streets and sights of New York and wandered down (and flew kites on) quiet Oregon beaches. She loved to play bridge with her buddies, and, as her son likes to say, was a “gin rummy jedi.” If there was an interesting or fun event to attend, she (and her lovely Estes Park friends) were the first in line.

Marge loved to say, “I can do it.”

And she has done “it,” her life, with courage and determination and a love of God that was palpable.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me – the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of His return.
