Community Members Invited To Trustee Talk Sept. 26

Town Board To Consider Remote Participation By Trustees Sept. 24

The Estes Park Town Board of Trustees invites community members to join Trustees Carlie Bangs and Marie Cenac for a Trustee Talk Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. This is an opportunity for community members to discuss local issues with members of the board in an informal setting.

The Estes Park Town Board will consider allowing any board member to remotely participate in Town Board meetings at its study session and regular meeting Sept. 24. The study session begins at 5:15 p.m. in Town Hall rooms 202/203 and the regular meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Town Board Room, 170 MacGregor Ave. Public comment is encouraged. Written comments may be delivered to the Town Clerk by Sept. 23 in Room 130 of Town Hall or via email to townclerk@estes.org.

Local governments that allow remote participation typically do so for cases of personal medical reasons or disability, emergency, military service or geographic distance. If an ordinance is approved allowing remote participation, a policy would be developed to outline how a member of the board could remotely participate in board meetings via phone or video conference, to-be-determined. Remote participation is expected to be used infrequently. In considering this, the board will discuss allowable circumstances and limits, notice required, technical provisions, procedural alterations such as the need for roll-call voting, provisions for study sessions, quasijudicial items and executive sessions, and a limit to the number of board members who could participate remotely and whether a quorum of the members, and the meeting chair, must be physically present at each meeting.

Town And County Boards To Discuss Estes Valley Land Use Planning Agreement Sept. 30 Online comment form open Sept. Larimer County staff are taking the lead on drafting a new Estes Valley land 18 - 29 The Estes Park Town Board and Board of Larimer County Commissioners will continue discussions on the future of land use planning in the Estes Valley at a joint meeting Monday, Sept. 30, at 5:30 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave. The meeting will begin with a staff presentation summarizing the recent public process, with a focus on public feedback relevant to the agreement between the Town and County, as well as staff observations on the current system and opportunities for improvement. Following the presentation, the Town Board and Board of County Commissioners will have an opportunity to discuss the information and give staff direction in drafting a new agreement. Key discussion points will include whether or not the County and Town should continue to have a joint planning commission, joint processing of land use applications, and a joint Comprehensive Plan.

The public is encouraged to attend and comment. The meeting will be streamed and recorded at www.estes.org/videos.

Draft agreement options and a new, online comment form will be posted by Sept. 18 at www.larimer.org/estes-valley-iga. Community responses are requested by Sept. 29.

The intergovernmental agreement for land use planning between the Town of Estes Park and Larimer County is set to expire in February of 2020.

On Sept. 11 at 1:33 p.m. police were called to a possible cold assault at 508 Birch Ave. On scene they contacted a 26 year old Estes Park male and charged him with harassment and domestic violence against a 23 year old victim. The male was transported to Larimer County Jail.

On Sept. 13, at 7:24 p.m., police contacted a 50 year old male from Boulder, CO at 132 E. Elkhorn Ave. for smoking marijuana in public. The male was found to have a warrant out of Fort Collins for camping in public. He was booked and released on a PR bond.

On Sept. 13 at 11:20 p.m. police stopped a vehicle for driving without headlights in the 600 block of Big Thompson Ave. The driver, a 39 year old male from Illinois was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and was charged with DUI, DUI per se and failure to display headlamps when required. He was later released at EPPD to a responsible person.

On Sept. 14 at 10:18 p.m. police were called to a disturbance at 800 MacGregor Ave. On scene they arrested a 27 year old male from Littleton, CO and charged him with two counts of second degree assault and domestic violence against a 26 year old victim. He was transported to Larimer County Jail.

Estes Park Receives Voice Of The People Award Estes Park has been awarded the Voice of the People Award as a top-performer in acting on our citizens' responses to the biennial Citizen Survey. This year we are being commended for "Transformation in Recreation in Wellness." Besides all of our community's work to provide great trails, parks, open space and wellness opportunities, no doubt this award is, in large part, due to the opening of the Estes Valley Community Center in 2018 by our partners at Estes Valley Recreation and Park District.

National Research Center, Inc. (NRC) and Polco have announced Estes Park, CO as a Finalist of the Voice of the People Award for Transformation in Recreation and Wellness.

This award is only given to top performing jurisdictions that best listen and act for the benefit their communities. Based on responses from The National Citizen SurveyTM, now The National Community SurveyTM (The NCSTM), residents in our community reported among the highest levels of improvement for this

category compared with all other participating jurisdictions.

The National Community SurveyTM reports resident opinion and satisfaction with local government and services with a scientific, representative sample approach. Results are then used to inform budgeting, performance measurement and program planning.

The Voice of the People Awards stand alone as the only award given in local government based on community opinion. The perspectives of the residents themselves determine nominees for the very best of Community Engagement, Safety, Mobility, Foundations of Livability, Recreation and Wellness, Education and Enrichment, Natural Environment, Built Environment and Economy. Of the communities that participated in The National Community Survey in 2018, winners and finalists for Transformation in these categories showed the

greatest improvement in resident opinions from their last conducted iteration of the survey.

“These local governments are doing great things for their communities, and improving everyday life for their residents,” said Damema Mann, Director of National Engagement for NRC/Polco.

“We are honored to recognize the

award winners and finalists on a national stage.”

“With Bustang, you don’t have to worry about finding a parking space once you arrive in Estes Park, ” said Town of Estes Park Parking and Transit Manager Vanessa Solesbee. “With only 1,200 parking spaces located within the core of our downtown area and great events each weekend in September, spaces are often filled early. Bustang is a great option for those looking to leave the parking (and driving!) to someone else.

A roundtrip ticket is $10 per person. To encourage families to use the service during one of the busiest months of the year for visitors, children 11 years old and younger now can travel with their parents or guardians for free beginning this weekend and continuing through Sunday, Sept.

Innovative Ideas Become Reality When his parents ordered groceries for home delivery, Aiden could see their frustration figuring out a way to be there when they arrive since they both work and he was at school.

They were afraid to let the store simply leave them on the porch, or have the store deliver them again.

The had to be a better way, he thought, so he developed a delivery system which allows groceries to be delivered securely without anyone being home.

Aiden devised a system that uses a secure storage unit the store can place groceries in and when the unit is closed it securely locks. The storage unit keeps food secure, cold and fresh until only the homeowner can access the groceries a few hours later.

Great products and services come from innovative ideas to solve challenges, like Aiden’s storage unit, and the 2019 Young Entrepreneur Tournament is the place where they become reality.

The Larimer County Economic and Workforce Development Center is hosting the 12th Annual Young Entrepreneur Tournament in Loveland Oct. 2

through Oct. 23, 2019.

No business idea is too small, and the Young Entrepreneur Tournament enables new and innovative ideas to develop into a business while competing with peers. Businesses can be for-profit, non-profit, or a co-operative enterprise.

Young entrepreneurs will be able to develop and refine a business plan with experienced business leaders, experiencing what it takes to get a business off the ground and running.

Youth who are 18 and under are invited to participate with training and mentorship in four weekend workshops Oct. 12, through Oct. 20, 2019, with a final pitch event on Oct. 23, 2019.

Participants spend 20 hours developing their business plans and then get to pitch them Oct. 23, 2019, to a panel of judges in a competition to win up to $1,000 in prize money to start that business.

This Week In Mrs. Walsh's Garden Waxflower, Jamesia americana, is a medium-sized, deciduous shrub growing up to four feet high, blooming in June/July with flowers having five waxy, creamy white petals. The flowers are produced in erect, terminal panicles.

The oval leaves with serrated margins are deeply veined. It typically grows on rocky slopes, on canyon cliffs or in crevices of large boulders. In September the deep green foliage changes to red/orange. The name Jamesia honors Edwin James, a 19th Century medical doctor and botanist who accompanied explorer Stephen Long's 1820 expedition to the southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Mrs. Walsh's Garden is located on West Elkhorn Avenue, across the street from Performance Park. Admission is free and it is open from dawn to dusk.

LWV of Estes Park Presents Their “Back To League” Breakfast Program: Renewable Energy – What Do We Know; Where Are We Going?

The League of Women Voters of Estes Park (LWVEP) will kick off our year with the annual “Back to League” breakfast on September 25th from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Ave, Estes Park. In honor of the 100th anniversary of both the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote, and the founding of the National League of Women Voters, we are setting a goal of 100 members for the coming year. So please consider joining us as we continue our good work in Estes Park with educational voter forums, voter registration, timely programs and voter information pamphlets on upcoming ballot issues – all free to the general public.

The musicians are in their places. The dissonant sound they produce collectively as they warm up, consisting of every note in the chromatic scale, creates a din of energy in the music hall. Controlled chaos. Gradually the tympanis are quiet, the horns stop blaring, the woodwinds finish their trills and runs, and the strings fade away.

The oboist blows an A and the players repeat it back to her in unison. They adjust a tuning peg, a mouthpiece, a reed; then they hush. The musicians are ready.

The conductor walks on stage, footsteps echoing on the wood floor as he crosses with long strides to the podium. The audience applauds eagerly.

After the conductor bows to the full hall he turns to his orchestra and steps up onto the podium. He discretely tugs at his waistcoat, straightens his bow tie, scans the stage, nods, and lifts his baton. The air stirs as the musicians bring their instruments into position. With all eyes on the conductor, they wait.

At this moment the audience holds its collective breath. Holds it. Holds it. Oh, the elation of anticipation!

And then, from somewhere in the mezzanine, like a single gunshot, someone shatters the silence with a cough. The expanded air in the music hall collapses like cotton candy when it touches water. The suspended moment of sweet silence is ruined.

People in the audience shift in their seats, glancing slightly in the direction of the offender, wondering, Jane Austen-like, who could be so uncouth. The conductor tries to hide his grimace. His arm drops ever so slightly. The musicians blink. And then he brings his arm down, the first note is played, and the concert begins. But, as if we saw the magician slip the card up his sleeve, the magic moment is lost by that cough.

At classical performances, silence is as much a “note” as the musical notes on the score. (This goes for many other types of performances as well. Silence is a part of the script in a play, in choral music and certainly in mime!) Patrons of the arts should know better than to cough at any point during a production, or at least plan in advance for the unintended hack.

Of course it is the nature of humans to get a tickle in our throats from time to time. But a handkerchief to the mouth serves as an effective muffler. (It is best to keep the hanky on one’s lap to avoid frantic, last-second searching.) If an itch comes on suddenly, a sleeve is an acceptable substitute. Cough

drops are available from the ushers and should be unwrapped prior to the dimming of the lights. Better yet, BYOCD. Then you can be assured the lozenge dissolving on your tongue is your favorite flavor.

It was announced at a symphony performance I attended last year that the concert was being recorded for an album. The audience was asked to refrain from making any noise whatsoever, especially between movements. No one coughed, sneezed, wheezed or even sniffed. With several thousand people in the music hall, the pure, unadulterated silence was euphoric. It can be done!

Sometimes, especially in the winter, the sound of coughing at a concert comes in surround-sound, ricocheting from patron to patron in the theater, almost without pause.

It is like a dripping faucet: once I become aware of it I can’t get it off my mind. What must it be like for the conductor, I often wonder, when he hears percussion where none is written on the score?

There are two pieces I know of that were composed to challenge the capacity of an audience to observe—and participate—in silence. In 1949 Yves Klein wrote the Monotone-Silence Symphony. In this composition, the orchestra and chorus hold one tone (a D major chord) for close to 20 minutes. Then the reverberation of that music continues in its silence as the players sit still for another 20 minutes. (Imagine their rehearsal!) The performance was sold out when the piece was presented in New York City in 2013.

Also in 1949, John Cage composed 4’33”, a work that involves a pianist at a piano, in silence, for four minutes, 33 seconds. (Yes, I watched the entire piece performed on You Tube. I did not, however, spend 40 minutes with Klein’s symphony.) What is baffling is that Klein and Cage were unaware of each other and were therefore not influenced by the other as they each produced their respective silent pieces.

Klein came to believe silence was the most important part of his work. He said, “This silence is so marvelous because it grants happenstance and even sometimes the possibility of true happiness, if only for a moment…” I’m sure he did not write any coughs into his score.

Northern Colorado Owl Program To Be Given At The Community Center

Scott Rashid, Director of the Colorado Avian Research and Rehabilitation Institute or CARRI; and the author of Small Mountain Owls and The Great Horned Owl and in-depth Study, will be giving a presentation encompassing Northern Colorado’s 12 species of owls. Watch And Enjoy The Rut In Safety!

The annual elk rut is in full swing and the bull elk are busy bugling, gathering their harems of females and challenging one another for breeding rights.

The elk are amazing and wonderous animals that are fun to watch but remember, these are wild animals competing for dominance and the bulls are especially "pumped-up" at this time of year.

Paving the Way To The Future: Estes Park Museum Collections & Research Facility The Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc. is raising $1M to build a new Museum Collections & Research Facility. The building will house more than 30,000 locally historic artifacts with research space for the general public and staff to examine, study, and process archives and artifacts. One avenue to fundraise for this important community resource is through the sales of paver stones etched with text and art. The eight by eight inch pavers can be designed and purchased by individuals, families, groups, organizations, and business owners with a lasting quote or memory.

On Saturday, September 28, at 2:00 p.m. learn from the locals at the Estes Park Museum during the fall series, Estes Speaks. For the first of four oral histories, staff will be sharing the 1984 interview with Ron Brodie (1908-1987).

The audio from the interview will be presented with accompanying images from the collection to visually represent the context of the recording. Interviewed by Mel Busch, Sam Gates, and Betty Hedlund, Ron Brodie reflects on his time in Estes Park primarily describing the people and times of Estes Park in the 1940s and 1950s. Transcripts of the interviews will be provided. Program attendees will be invited to share stories related Ron Brodie to oral history interviews after each program which will be moderated by Museum staff.

Coming to Estes Park in 1931, Ron Brodie was only 18 years old when he was asked to run the Honor Brite grocery store on Elkhorn Avenue. He opened Brodie's Supermarket five years later and became ingrained in the Town.

Mr. Brodie served the Estes Park community as a Town Trustee, Mayor, the

Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department, the Light and Power Committee, and the Estes Park Sanitation Board.

Through all his civil service, residents remember his kindness and generosity overseeing his supermarket most fondly.

Starting in the late 1970s, Museum and Library staff began gathering interviews from local individuals.

Interviewing has continued up through the 2013 flood and a series in 2014 with prominent local climbers/mountaineers. With a variety of topics and eras spanning across more than 150 interviews, the Museum has taken the platform to let those who experienced history tell it themselves. Take A Deduction This Year For A Gift You Make Later

Changes to tax laws in 2017 affected many middle class Americans. Due to an increase in the standard deduction, more people now take this deduction rather than itemizing, and charitable donations have been affected. The use of Donor Advised Funds is an effective way to receive a deduction for your donations.

The Johnson Family has volunteered at their local hospital since 2009. They have also made charitable donations each year and enjoyed the tax deduction for doing so. In 2017, their deduction went away, but giving back is still important to them. After talking with their tax advisor, they decide to “bundle” the next 5 years of donations into a Donor Advised Fund this year. They will itemize their taxes in 2019 so they can get a deduction for their donation and plan on using the standard deduction for the remaining 4 years. Donor Advised Funds serve as a holding place for charitable donations so the Johnsons can decide over time how they will disperse the funds.

In 2019, Sally had a record-breaking year of sales as a real estate broker. She volunteers at a couple of non-profit organizations in town, and she wants to minimize her tax bill. She’s too busy with her business to decide where she wants to donate the funds, so she “bunches” her money into a Donor Advised Fund.

By making a big contribution this year when she has extra income, she can

itemize her taxes and take a deduction now. She’ll decide how to donate funds later when she makes recommendations to the administrator of the funds.

John’s parents passed away after long illnesses. He is overwhelmed with the amount of paperwork and material possessions to sort through. He is also the sole heir to their estate. Giving back was important to John’s parents, and they instilled this quality in him as well. He knows that he wants to give some funds away to charity, but doesn’t have time to decide which organizations would best honor his parents’ legacy. He chooses to “bundle” money into a Donor Advised Fund so he can itemize his taxes and minimize his tax bill this year. He can decide how to distribute the funds over the next several years.

A donor advised fund (DAF) is an account that provides immediate tax benefits and allows you to recommend grants to charities of your choice over time. Rural Estes Alliance For Community Health Pursues Mental Health Pathways Helping the community find the health resources they need.

The Rural Estes Alliance for Community Health (REACH) provides and supports community wide initiatives and education designed to improve the overall health and well-being of those in the Estes Valley. The current REACH committee members include: Estes Park Health, Salud Family Health Centers, UCHealth Timberline Medical Center, CO-SLAW, Estes Park School District, Estes Valley Crisis Advocates, Harmony Foundation, Ken McDonald, PSY. D., Larimer County Department of Health & Environment, Northern Colorado Health Partnership, SummitStone Health Partners, The Health District of Northern Larimer County and YMCA of the Rockies.

The REACH committee has identified three goals that the group is actively pursuing. The first goal of REACH is to strengthen community resources to improve rural health. The second, improve behavioral health pathways to ensure timely behavioral health care. Last, provide sustainable health care employment opportunities through educational training to become a Medical Assistant and/or a Certified Nursing Assistant.

To achieve these three goals, the group is diligently working to make sure the right people are at the table to provide resources and talent to achieve our goals.

Every month a group of 14 agencies (and growing) gathers to share where resources are needed and who can fill the gaps. The group currently has two subcommittees: MA/CNA Education and Behavioral Health who meet additional times during the month.

The Behavior Health committee is tackling the issue of Opioid Addiction, Medication Take Back and Suicide Prevention. The committee helped Estes Park Health identify the requirements to be come a State approved Medication Take Back Station. The Medication Take Back Station is located at Estes Park Health and is open during regular Physician Clinic hours. On August 28, REACH held it’s first Overdose Awareness event in Performance Park. Currently the group is working together to establish mental health pathways to en-

sure consistent treatment between community providers, create a common Suicide Risk Assessment to be used by community providers and develop a Larimer County behavioral health resource list.

September is Suicide Prevention Month and the REACH committee would like to share some tips from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) – “Navigating a Mental Health Crisis.” The full resource guide is available on the front page of eph.org.

From NAMI: People who attempt suicide typically feel overwhelming emotional pain, frustration, loneliness, hopelessness, powerlessness, worthlessness, shame, guilt, rage or self-hatred.

Any talk of suicide should always be taken seriously. The National Suicide Prevention Line at 1-800-273-8255 or call 911. Common warning signs of suicide include: • Giving away personal possessions • Talking as if they’re saying goodbye • Taking steps to tie up loose ends • Making or changing a will • Stockpiling pills or a weapon • Preoccupation with death • Sudden changes in behavior, personality or mood • Increased drug or alcohol use • Withdrawal from friends, family and normal activities • Failed romantic relationship • History of suicide attempts or other self-harming behavior • History of family/friend suicide or attempts Coming October 16, REACH partners will be hosting QPR (Question, Persuade and Refer) Suicide Prevention Training at the Estes Valley Library – Hondius Room – from 2:00-3:30 p. m.

The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. People trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help. This class is free and open to the public. Nancy is the winner of the 2018 Boston Comedy Festival award, the first woman to ever achieve this honor. The Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation will celebrate donors and supporters at its Annual Membership Meeting and Reception on Friday, October 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. Library Friends & Foundation members provide a margin of excellence that enables the Library to be a community-builder, literacy center, and champion of hometown youth.

The after-hours gathering will begin with a wine-and-cheese reception to thank supporters. Attendees will then gather for a brief business and nominating meeting. After that, special guest Gary Coleman will lead the featured program, recounting his firsthand experiences as one of the survivors of an air crash incident. Coleman’s story is told in the book, “Miracle on Buffalo Pass:

Rocky Mountain Airways Flight 217” by Harrison Jones.

Coleman is a longtime Estes Park resident and owner of Estes Park Ride-AKart. He was first officer on Flight 217 when it crashed on December 4, 1978.

He narrowly survived the accident. The idea to revisit this story came a few years ago from Coleman’s daughter, Kelly.

“When Kelly contacted me and began telling the story,” says author Harrison Jones, “I was intrigued and knew there were many questions that needed to be answered. Kelly introduced me to her father, and Gary and I connected on so many levels right away.” They all visited the crash site near Steamboat Springs in October of 2016, leading to many more months of collaboration for the book’s completion.

The author interviewed many passengers, medical personnel, Rocky Mountain Airways employees and others who had insights into the crash. “I have interviewed more than thirty individuals who have graciously told their story for publication,” says Jones.

The October 4 event is a special reception open to the membership of the Library Friends & Foundation, and advance RSVP is required. Anyone who is a currently a member may RSVP to Sarah Walsh at swalsh@estesvalleylibrary.org.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Michael, my boy, you might as well forget about singing. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never be able to sing. You just canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sing.â&#x20AC;?

The little dark-haired Italian boy stared in disbelief at his junior high school music teacher. Not sing? But singing was really the only thing he really cared about in life. His dad was a wonderful singer. And he wanted to be a singer too. He had planned to be a great Italian tenor. His favorite dream was to stand on the hills overlooking Rome, Italy, his homeland, and sing â&#x20AC;&#x153;O Sole Mioâ&#x20AC;? with joy and victory.

Michael ducked his head to hide the tears that leaped into his eyes, mumbled something, and walked out of the music room for the last time. The next day he had his class schedule changed, dumping music and any dreams of singing forever. The unthinking teacher spoke daunting words that snuffed out the candle of his young dream. For fifty-three years Michael pursued other things. He built a successful career in international business, becoming a consultant, highly sought by corporations around the world. He married Betty and they had raised a wonderful family. He was surrounded by a wide circle of family and friends. Still, the dream to sing simmered in a recess of his mind, like a pot on a back burner.

On New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eve, 1986, Michael and Betty went to a party at a friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house. During the evening Michael met Charlotte Greeson, a marvelously talented music teacher, vocal coach, and conductor. He confided in her: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always wanted to sing, but I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t!â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;How do you know you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t?â&#x20AC;? asked Charlotte. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve known since I was a kid. My junior high teacher told me so.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I bet you can sing now,â&#x20AC;? Charlotte said, confidently. â&#x20AC;&#x153;No, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. Besides, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too late, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sixty-six years old.â&#x20AC;? But the dream flickered weakly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do you really think I can sing.?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Of course you can! Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re extremely bright and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a good teacher. Call me Monday and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll set up a schedule.â&#x20AC;?

Three years later a telegram came. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Charlotte, I just sang â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ole Sole Mioâ&#x20AC;? from hills above Rome. Stop. My dream has come true. Thanks for your encouragement. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop. Love, Michaelâ&#x20AC;?

I like to contrast that junior high teacher with another teacher who encountered an aspiring musician. The true story is told of two parents who took their small child to a concert by a world renowned pianist. During the concert they were very careful to keep their child close at hand. However, during the intermission as they chatted with another couple they were appalled to see their small son climb the stairs to the platform and onto the piano bench and begin to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;playâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; a rough version of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Twinkle, Twinkle, little starsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; just as the famous pianist arrived and took his place. The pianist put his arm around the small child, guided his hand, while playing with the other. And, together, they played the song as the thrilled audience stood and gave them both a standing ovation.

I wonder which of these pictures most reflect how each of us impact the lives of people that we interact with. I know of a father whom Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard say to his son: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;boneheadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never amount to anything.â&#x20AC;? Small wonder, then, that he struggles to achieve greatness. On the other hand, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard personally and heard shared with some words that show great confidence in oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s potential and ability, and watched them â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;soarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to levels of greater heights. A Beautiful Heart

Alex Oprea is a handsome, eight year old boy. He is a solar system enthusiast, an entrepreneur, and a very kindhearted and proud environmentalist. His sweet kindness and charisma led him to become a businessman over the summer months, selling organic fresh-squeezed lemonade at the Farmer’s Market in downtown Estes Park and at Fun City.

Some of the profit money, he donated to the Estes Park Elementary cafeteria as Alex said, “For my friends who cannot

afford lunch.” Alex added, “The rest of the money will go towards NASA camp, where I would love to go to explore the universe!”

This young man also has a YouTube channel called, “The Universe of Alex Oprea” and has a few hundreds views.

Alex’s parents, Ela and Lucky say, “We couldn’t ask for a better son to show us the beauty of this universe.”

Congratulations to Brooke Barron, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for September 20, 2019.

At EPHS, Brooke runs on the cross country and track teams and is a member of the EPHS Marching Band. She earned her varsity letter in cross country, track and band her freshman year and hopes to repeat that again during her sophomore year.

Lets make sure to look over our yards and bring in anything that might pose an entrapment hazard for our resident elk with which we share our beautiful mountain community.

Also, the CPW wants to remind everyone to enjoy watching the elk rut, but please do so at a safe and respectable distance to the animals. Even though it is fun and educational to watch this display remember, these are wild animals, in the midst of their mating season. The bulls are concerned with one thing, and one thing only, mating with as many of the females in their harem as they can.

The elk don’t care who or what is in their way, their goal is to pass down their genes to their offspring. It is extremely dangerous to get too close to these wild animals. Avoid potential accident, injury or death by always viewing from a safe distance. If an animal is carefully watching you and appears "jumpy," you are way too close. Avoid eye contact and back away. Raise your arms to make yourself look larger. For photographers, a good rule of thumb is "give them room, use your zoom.” Never attempt to touch or feed wildlife, it's dangerous and illegal.

Help The Elk Stay Untangled Time to stow away your swings, hammocks, volleyball nets, tomato cages

The elk rut in the Estes Valley is underway and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife now urges us to please look around our homes, yards and businesses for items that the elk may get tangled up in.

Recently, a large bull got his antlers caught in the ropes of a swing-set swing. The bull walked by and tried to spar with the swing, causing the entanglement. Passers-by called Colorado Parks and Wildlife to get help and a wildlife officer arrived and drug immobilized the bull and freed him. Luckily, this story had a happy ending but if help doesn’t arrive quickly enough, elk have been known to struggle so hard that they fracture their skulls and tragically die in these entrapments.

When bull elk are pumped up with testosterone, anything that moves can be of interest. Swings, hammocks, volleyball nets and tire swings blowing in the wind pose a challenge for the elk and they will approach these items and try to spar with them. “Black, White, Color” New Exhibit At The Art Center Of Estes Park The Art Center of Estes Park announces its newest upcoming exhibit opening on October 4, “Black, White, Color” by local photographer Larry Purdy.

Larry Purdy began his journey into photography 25 years ago. What he found almost immediately was a new world, a world that he had never seen before…he had been there, but never really saw or felt what was there. All he could say was WOW as to what he had been missing. It did not take long for him to realize that to take a photo and have it represent what he actually saw and felt was quite difficult. His passion is the outdoors, and his photographs are a result of having a fun-loving life finding and documenting that beauty through creativity. The opening will be part of the First Friday Art Groove from 5-8 pm. Wine and refreshments will be served. Larry is donating a duraplaque print for a door prize.

Hazard Tree Mitigation Work Continues In RMNP

Park staff will be removing hazard trees in late September through October along Trail Ridge Road through Upper Hidden Valley as part of ongoing bark beetle mitigation work. Temporary traffic control will be implemented above Many Parks Curve during tree falling operations.

Work will begin on September 30 and continue through October 22, weather and resources permitting. Traffic delays of 15 minutes, in both uphill and downhill directions should be expected on

Monday through Thursdays between 8 a. m. to 4:30 pm.

Delays could extend beyond 15 minutes depending on the volume of vehicles. Work on this project will not take place on Fridays or weekends.

Bark beetles continue to be active within Rocky Mountain National Park, impacting large numbers of conifer trees. The park’s priorities for mitigation of the effects of beetles are focused on removing hazard trees and hazard fuels related to the protection of life and property.

Join Dr. Edward Gage, Research Scientist at Colorado State University, on Wednesday, September 25, at 7 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center in Rocky Mountain National Park as he shares progress on analyses of ten years of monitoring data from the Elk and Vegetation Management Plan.

Declines in the condition of aspen and willow-dominated riparian communities in Rocky Mountain National Park are well-documented, precipitated largely by excessive elk herbivory and a loss of beaver. In 2008, the park began implementing an Elk and Vegetation Management Plan to guide management, reduce impacts of elk on vegetation, and restore the natural range of variability in elk populations and affected ecological communities. Periodic monitoring of vegetation structure and condition is an

integral part of this plan.

In this Science Behind the Scenery presentation, Dr. Gage will summarize the aspen, upland and willow vegetation data collected to date and explain changes that have been observed over time. Dr. Gage specializes in wetland and riparian ecology, remote sensing, GIS, and plant ecology. He cut his academic teeth on questions of beaver and willows in Rocky Mountain National Park 20 years ago and has maintained a keen interest and deep love for the park ever since.

Health issues drove Anna Leigh to seek out Healing Waters, an Estes Park nonprofit—and soon after, she was a believer. In fact, the warm-water therapy and fitness pool gave Leigh such great results that she’s now the foundation’s Executive Director.

“I’d previously been going to the rec center pool for water exercise classes,” she explains, “but even though I really enjoyed the classes, the water was too cold for my arthritis.” That’s when she discovered the 94-degree therapy and fitness pool at Healing Waters—and fell in love. Warm water therapy and fitness pools are ideal for folks with arthritis, chronic pain, neuromuscular and neurological problems, orthopedic injuries and rehabilitation, just to name a few.

The facility is completely wheelchair-accessible, with a hydraulically-powered chairlift for lowering clients into the water. The pool room even features a beautiful mural by artist Ben Brown. But the warm-water pool isn’t just for therapy or rehab. Hikers and runners appreciate a pool session after a heavy workout to reduce swelling and inflammation, and those with athletic injuries finds it speeds up healing.

“There aren’t many of these facilities, ” Leigh points out. “We’re so lucky to have one right here in Estes Park. ” The pool was gifted by Nancy Follender in 2008 after the death of her husband, Dr. Alan Follender, and the nonprofit therapy center has since been maintained with the help of volunteers, donations and grants—and used printer ink cartridges collected from the community. “Funds we receive from collecting the used cartridges help a lot, ” Leigh

says. And by taking in an item that would normally be landfilled, Healing Waters becomes one of our Estes Park Planet Partners.

Used ink jet printer cartridges can be dropped off any time during business hours. The front area at MedX (153 First St. ; 970-577-0174) also has a Healing Waters collection box. What’s more, Leigh is putting the word out to other Estes Park groups or businesses who might be interested in hosting a Healing Waters collection box. With additional collection boxes all over town, it would make it even easier for residents to drop off cartridges. “We welcome the participation of other businesses, ” she says.

“And we’ll pick up the cartridges when the box is full. ” So stop trashing those old printer cartridges! Help both Healing Waters and the planet by recycling them.

Paint And Stain Recycling Update

It has now been 30 months since we began the effort to provide an Estes Park paint-and-stain recycling solution without driving to Fort Collins. Our intent was not only to serve our community needs, but to keep these products completely out of our water supplies and fragile environment.

As of September 15, 2019, you, your neighbors, your HOA’s, realtors, property managers, business owners, other painting contractors, builders, city, state and federal agencies and governments, YMCA, Eagle Rock, RMNP, and even folks from Grand Lake and Granby have used our free service.

We had absolutely no idea what to expect as far as volume. As each measured ton added up, we kept thinking this will slow down one day. It has not. In the first two weeks of September 2019, you brought to us another 1.2 tons to recycle!

Now, the numbers: 96,713 tons in 30 months! That’s 193,426 pounds or approximately 21,980 gallons of paint and stain. If you were to stack single gallon cans on top of each other, the stack would reach 2.6 miles high!

This question was asked of me, “What is the biggest lesson you take away from your recycling program?” The answer is here in this story.

One day a mother and her nine-yearold daughter came to my office to recy-

cle just one pint of stain. I inquired why only one pint. The mother told me she wanted to teach her daughter the importance of recycling. They had gone door to door in their apartment building trying to find something to bring to recycle. All they got was a one-pint can of stain.

Here was the parenting opportunity I love—a chance to teach a young person about recycling! It was a wonderful experience. I will tell you, there is reason for optimism in kids like her!

Thanks go out to the Recycle Estes group, who provided us with volunteers and helpful advice on how to make this work; Presbyterian Community Church for sponsoring the recycle events; Waste Management has been unfaltering in their support; Park Supply Co., Ace Hardware and Estes Park Lumber for posting and handing out our recycle flyers, Estes Park News and the Trail Gazette for your printed support, and Paint Care Colorado for their training and advice.

I have been waiting 30 months to say this: “To those detractors, painting contractors, people in government and others who told me this service was not needed back in March 2017. You were wrong, I was right! 96.7- tons right!

Next Monitored Weed Drop-Off September 28

Now is the time to remove mature weeds that contain seeds that will be next year’s- and many more yearsweeds.

The next Monitored Weed Drop-off will be held next Saturday, September 28 from 9:00 to noon located north of the Waste Management transfer station at 666 Elm Road, behind the new recycling center.

Estes Land Stewardship Association (ELSA) volunteers will be on hand to answer weed questions and unload your bags. Bring in your noxious weeds in paper yard bags for free disposal – no slash, pine needles or cones, other yard waste, trash, or dirt. Please remove/shake off dirt from plant roots.

Unauthorized drop-offs at this location are considered theft of services.

Weeds and trash can be disposed of year-around at Waste Management for a fee. Only bags of noxious weed materials will be accepted at this event!

Please do not bring non-noxious weeds; this will jeopardize hosting

these costly events in the future. Paper yard bags are available for purchase at local hardware stores.

These events are being made possible with the support from Estes Land Stewardship Association (ELSA), Town of Estes Park, Larimer County, Estes Valley Land Trust, and donations. To date 1,771 bags have been collected at the June, July, and August Monitored Weed Drop-Offs & Roundup.

Free “Fourteen Very Unwanted Weeds in the Estes Valley Identification and Management Guide” weed booklets are available year round at the Estes Valley Library and at Town Hall Public Works Office, and at the Farmers Market during the summer months. Library Art Exhibit Features Watercolors By Jill Hardman The Estes Valley Library is hosting an exhibit featuring the watercolors of Jill Hardman, now through October. The works are on display on both floors of the Library.

Jill began painting by attending Charlotte Lloyd’s watercolor classes at the Estes Park Art Center. A love of flowers, instilled by her grandfather, led Jill to begin painting cultivated flowers. She then shifted her focus to the wildflowers of the Estes Valley and Rocky Mountain National Park.

She credits the Rocky Mountain Conservancy’s wildflower classes, particularly those led by Leanne Benton, Kevin Cook, and Marlene Borneman, with teaching her where and when to look for subject matter.

Jill’s paintings began as a collaborative effort with her husband, Pat, who is an avid photographer. Together, they visit the Park and other locations several times a week to explore and photograph whatever is blooming. Pat takes thousands of digital flower photographs each summer. From those, Jill selects ten to twelve with detail, color and composition that lend themselves to paintings. The process begins with a transfer of the image to watercolor paper, followed by layering paint to capture the image as accurately as possible. Jill and Pat donate their paintings and photographs to the Estes Park League of Women Voters and various charities for fundraising.

He is a handsome guy, about four years old and house trained. Freddy is good with other dogs and kids but would best as an only dog. He will need an experienced owner as he may try to be bossy.

He is a lab/shar-pei mix and good on a leash. All the volunteers love spending time with sweet Freddy!

Paws is about two years old. She starts out a little bit shy but she is happy, fun and affectionate. She will be best as an only kitty or with a slow introduction to a new kitty family member. She is a big gal but we think it makes her even cuter!

World Class Flamenco Dance And Music The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies is excited to bring world renowned musicians and dance to Estes Park this Saturday, September 21 from 7-9 p.m. ¡Ojaleo! is a performance group based in the front range with roots in music and dance around the world. Singer Marisa Perez is a native of Seville, Spain and grew up in a family of singers. She really embraced Flamenco and her roots, however, when she moved to Colorado in 2002. Having studied and performed with many masters of the genre, Marisa has captivated audiences around Colorado and New Mexico, as well as her native Spain, for almost two decades.

Guitarist Steve Mullins’s musical accomplishments are too long to list, with his original compositions featured in such diverse settings as TV commercials, documentaries, NPR, silent movies, and even dancing horse shows at the National Western Stock Show. Steve is a professor of World Music at CU Boulder and the University of Wyoming. A selfproclaimed, “instrument nerd,” Steve loves the art of instruments, stating, “I

love the subtleties of their sound, their scale lengths…and the adjectives and metaphors used to describe this elusive thing called ‘tone.’” Rarely is the connection that music creates so apparent, as when listening to and watching Steve Mullins perform with others. “I Still Believe” Russ Taff In Estes Park This Saturday To Tell His Story Have you or someone you loved battled addiction? Most who have walked this lonely road experience much pain and a good dose of shame. Can you imagine being a gospel singer and struggling with a secret addiction? This is the case with Russ Taff. Over Russ’s illustrious career he has collected six Grammys, 18 Dove awards and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame three, (yes three) times! Yet underneath all the success Russ suffered from childhood trauma that led him toward alcohol as a means of dulling the pain.

Russ’s father was a fire breathing Pentecostal preacher and an alcoholic. His mother was verbally and physically abusive. He was repeatedly told he was no good, worthless, a waste of space.

Russ carried this pain with him as he became more and more successful. After years of cycling through sobriety and relapse, Russ finally dealt with the childhood trauma that continued to haunt him. He’s been sober for over a dozen years now.

A couple of years ago, he and his wife Tori were asked to allow their story to be told through a documentary. Last October the movie “I Still Believe” was released in theaters for a one night showing. Since that time Russ and Tori have been traveling the country showing the film and answering audience questions. “We just wanted to get the conversation going,” said Russ.

“So many people in the church have these deep struggles, our hope is that they come out of the shadows and seek the help that they need.”

“We have been shocked at the number of people who have come to these events and told us their stories of pain around addiction.” Tori said, “The only difference between us and them is that we have a microphone. ” Estes Park residents and visitors have a golden opportunity to attend one of these events this Saturday, September 21, 6:00 p.m. at Estes Park High School.

The proceeds from ornament sales are used to provide high school senior scholarships and assistance to local families in need. Robert James Wands Presented With The Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award

Throughout his career, he has had his

work shown in important exhibitions, including the I-25 Corridor Artist Show and a show at the Cleveland Art Institute and Denver At Museum.

Other places his work has been shown include the Off Broadway Art Galleries, The Colorado Gallery and the Nemick Thompson Gallery. Mr. Wands is also represented in permanent collections at the Colorado Center for the Arts, the Colorado National Bank and the Sangre de Cristo Art Center in Pueblo, which is honoring him with a retrospective exhibition on his lifetime work in 2020.

An expert in his field, Mr. Wands holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts from the University of Denver. Subsequently, he pursued postgraduate studies through Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and the Cleveland Art Institute. During his spare time, he gives back to his community through the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park. For his professional excellence, he earned features in Who’s Who in America. Who’s Who in the West and Who's Who in American Education.

Looking ahead, Mr. Wands intends to experience the continued growth and success of his career.

Help Keep Our Bears Wild & Alive!

Welcome to Estes Park! While here, please keep in mind that you’re vacationing in black bear country and that brings with it some responsibilities.

Rule one is simple: keep your food, your pet’s food and everyone’s garbage out of bears’ paws. Do not feed bears, accidentally or intentionally.

Rule two is just as simple: there is no excuse for breaking rule one. It is illegal and it will make trouble for not only you, but for bears who will pay the price for your irresponsibility, sometimes with their lives.

Problems can be completely avoided if you imagine that every moment you are in Estes, there is a bear hiding behind a tree somewhere. You can’t see him, but he can see you. And he's waiting for you to do something for him to score a meal.

Bears have great noses for sniffing out food and trash. Don't leave food outside.

That includes picnics, barbecue grills, pet food bowls or even dirty dishes.

Don't leave food in a car or even a house if a bear can smell it and find a way in.

Garbage belongs in bear-proof trash bins. Never leave it out overnight in regular trash cans or lying around outside to be cleaned up tomorrow. If a bear proof trash bin is full, find another, don't leave anything outside of the bin.

Like the famous Yogi bear, Estes Parks bruins also are "smarter than the av-erage bear" To get a picnic basket or any other smelly, tasty treat, however small,

they will climb through windows and break into homes. They will break into cars. They can make a big mess doing it.

Bears can not only smell where food is, they have the strength and perseverance to remove barriers between them and food. People need to be very vigilant. Always close and lock the windows and doors in your cars and home!

If a bear gets labeled "a problem bear," it will be trapped and killed by wildlife officials.

We humans cause this and then bears pay the price. If everyone coming in to Estes Park realized all the problems and drama we've gone through trying to keep our bears wild, we are sure they'd want to do the same and keep our bears safe!

Artist’s Passion Inspired by Grandmother’s Jewelry Cabinet

Most little girls love to play dress up, using a relative’s clothing, jewelry, shoes and make-up to feel all grown up. Artist Elizabeth Hake admits she was that girl. “I loved to visit my Grandmother Jeanette. I couldn’t keep my hands off of her costume jewelry. I loved to explore all the little drawers in her jewelry cabinet,” she said. “It felt like a treasure hunt!”

Hake has turned that love of her grandmother’s jewelry into a career and is the Artist in Residence at The Old Gallery in Allenspark this Saturday. She’ll be demonstrating her craft and discussing the source of inspiration behind her designs from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Hake started making jewelry in 1993 and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing from Northern Michigan University in 1996. After being an Artist in Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafters in 2001, her part-time passion of jewelry making became a fulltime job. “I’ve been making a living as an artist ever since!,” she said.

Hake is one of 19 artists that call The Old Gallery “home.” “I was very excited about the opportunity to be one of the artists at The Old Gallery,” Hake said.

“The atmosphere is very relaxing and welcoming, which invites you to come look around and stay awhile. The building itself speaks of the past and also the future in its melding of the new and old.”

The Old Gallery is a nonprofit center for community, the arts and visitors. It’s housed in a 1940s log structure that received a $1.2 million renovation in 2015.

“There’s such a feeling of warmth from the colors and the presence of the wood

Hake says she wants the women who wear her jewelry to get a sense of empowerment from it. “I love to hear from customers that they wear their jewelry all the time, get lots of compliments and seems to be a part of them.”

Hake participates in local, regional and national shows and has taught numerous workshops to children and adults.

Her work has been published in several books about jewelry: Art Jewelry Today, Paper Jewelry, 500 Necklaces and the British Jewellery From Recycled Materials. Her jewelry has also appeared in jewelry trade magazines such as Metalsmith Magazine, Lapidary Journal and Art Jewelry Magazine.

Hake said, “Art is like the tide. There is always going to be a preceding wave, or artwork with a particular idea and there will always be a successor. Each piece builds upon previous works and leads you to the next new piece.”

Allenspark Hilltop Guild Presents Fall Festival This Saturday Want to get in some early holiday shopping? Want a unique handmade gift from Colorado? How about a steaming hot bowl of chili?

Then you’ll want to head to the Fall Festival at Hilltop Guild’s Kelley House in Allenspark this Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The location is 18720 Highway 7; fifteen miles from Lyons and just 25 minutes south of Estes Park on Highway 7.

“There will be four different kinds of chili to enjoy, plus a beverage and dessert for just $8,” said Hilltop Guild President Colette McDonald. “We’ll be selling knit, crochet, woven and quilted items, homemade jellies (made with local berries, gathered in competition with the bears each summer!), jewelry, gourds, handmade stationary, photographs and a White Elephant sale.” Local wood artisan Susan Maxson will also be selling her wares.

The Hilltop Guild is a productive and creative association of mem-

bers that creates handmade crafts throughout the year. These are sold at its Annual Bazaar the first Saturday in August and the Fall Festival.

“This festival truly captures the spirit of our small mountain community,” Mcdonald said. “It’s also a lovely drive to Allenspark during the fall, when all the leaves are turning. We have a growing moose population, in addition to herds of elk, and we see them often.”

The Hilltop Guild was founded in the late 1940s. The group meets weekly throughout the year to learn new skills

and create items to be sold. Proceeds go toward scholarships and a list of philanthropic causes. The group also maintains the site of the historic Allen cabin, the original homestead in Allenspark, as well as the Bunce School. The Bunce School holds a Historic Designation from the State of Colorado and County of Boulder, and is recognized by the National Register. It is one of two rural log schoolhouses remaining in Boulder County and is located near the Kelley House, the location of the Fall Festival.

Gordon M. Pedersen 1996. Gordon married Lois Smith in 2001 and while the marriage did not last, she is still a part of the family.

Gordon was immediately bored with retirement and opened Estes Park Limousines and began a wild career in transportation. Weddings, bachelor and bachelorette parties, airport shuttles and birthday parties, all hours of the day. Eventually he sold the limousines and concentrated on weddings.

1938-2019. If you ever met Babs, surely you loved her. She was that type of person: kind, loving, always smiling, and ever so sweet. Her faith was her guide. Her kids and grandkids were her life. She was all about experiences and exposing her family to things that were important to her, hoping that one day they too would carry on her legacy.

She was 80 going on 50. She filled her days volunteering in Rocky Mountain National Park and at the high school with at risk girls, hanging with her 'little brother' that she mentored through the Partners Mentoring Youth program, working with Crossroads Ministry and the list goes on. She never met a stranger, loved potlucks, playing with the grandkids, and doing things for others, especially when no one was looking.

Over 75 years ago, this young girl from Tyler, Texas first discovered her beloved Estes Park. Babs loved nature.

She was always outside doing something. “Why would anyone choose to be inside?” she would say. She would hike every chance she got. People would often stop her on the trails and shyly ask her age, amazed at her strength and endurance. She would reuse, recycle, and save everything you can possibly imagine; picking up litter and tucking it in her pocket along the trails. She passed these traditions on to her kids and grandkids, teaching them to love nature and especially Colorado, raising them on summers full of picnics in the park, watching wildlife, and ex-

periencing the great outdoors.

Among the many things she was known for, there were the crazy outfits… bright colors and wild patterns.

She would say “It makes people smile, and I love it… don’t you?” She was also known for being very frugal… “I’m laughing all the way to the bank” she would say. “Never spend a penny that you don’t have to.” There were exceptions. She was happy to spend on things like taking all the children and grandchildren on construction mission trips to Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. Helping others is what matters, and she wanted all to experience and live that joy of giving.

Babs lost her husband, Carroll, a few years ago. It comforts the family to know they are now together again. She leaves behind three children (Keith, Laurie, and Julie) and their spouses (Beth and Tom), her seven grandchildren (Katherine, Eric, Parker, Clare, Ben, Brooks, and Bryan), her dog (Fritz), and her countless friends.

She’ll be fondly remembered for her huge heart, her big smile, and her contagious laugh, often with tears flowing down her face over something silly that she herself had done. If everyone in the world was even just a little more like “Nana Babs,” the world would be a much better place.

The “Celebration of Babs” will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

At noon, we will begin with a service at the YMCA of the Rockies outdoor amphitheater near the Upper Cookout area. Please bring your favorite appetizer, side dish, or dessert to share at a potluck at the same location. Dress for the weather, and we hope you will be comfortable, casual, and colorful (Babs style… because she felt all-black was too depressing).

Instead of flowers, please consider a contribution to one of Babs’ favorite organizations, for example, YMCA of the Rockies, Crossroads Ministry of Estes Park, Estes Valley Land Trust, or the Rocky Mountain Conservancy.

Estes Park resident, Russ Jaenecke, 88, died at Brookdale Marianna Butte in Loveland on September 11, 2019. Russell Elmer Jaenecke was born October 14, 1930 in St. Paul, MN. His parents were Karl and Ella (Wolfgram) Jaenecke. Russ graduated from Harding High School and attended St. Paul Vocational School and the University of Minnesota. He served his country in the Naval Reserves Seabees on the USS Coral Sea Carrier. On June 7, 1958 he married Carole Tonett Matthey at Zion Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN. Russ was a Mechanical Designer and had worked at American Hoist & Derrick and Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing in St. Paul, MN, Honeywell Aero

Space in Minneapolis, MN and Ball Aerospace in Boulder, CO from where he retired in 1995. In 2000, Russ and Carole moved to Estes Park, CO where Russ continued enjoying his hobbies of skiing, fishing, hiking, and restoring classic cars. At the time of his death, he had owned 42 cars, many of which were classics he restored. He was a past member of the Sports Car Club of America. Russ is survived by his wife Carole of Estes Park, daughter Beth Ann Hickey and her husband Bill of Big Sky, MT, a son Scott Jaenecke of Chippewa Falls, WI, a niece and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Lucille Busillo. Russ loved his family and they were an important part of his life.

A Celebration Of Life will be held Saturday October 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Allnutt Funeral Service in Estes Park.

Jan Hagen

Estes Park resident Jan Hagen died September 17, 2019 at her home in Estes Park, CO with her daughter by her side. She was 80 years old. Janice L. Hagen was born July 9, 1939 to Allyn and Margaret (Dunn) Hagen in Ottumwa, IA. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA, and attended Iowa State University. Jan then moved to Denver, CO and enjoyed many careers including one with Frontier Airlines that allowed her to travel the world to places like Kenya and The Philippines.

She also owned and operated a catering

business named Queen Bee’s Catering in Denver and worked at Wagner Equipment. She then moved to Estes Park and worked at Harmony Foundation for 20 Years. She enjoyed volunteering at the police station, cooking, baking and cheering on her beloved Colorado Rockies.

Jan was preceded in death by both parents, life partner Bryan Michener and brother Keith Hagen.

She is survived by daughter Shannon Olmsted (Matthew Wilber) of Kelly, WY, Paul & Dianne Michener of Denver, CO, Richard & Leslie Michener of Parker, CO and Dana & Audra Michener of Estes Park; grandchildren Nisa Michener, Loren & Viki Michener, Michael Michener, Geoffrey & Ashley Michener, great grandchildren Bryan, Brynn and AJ, cousin Patricia & Art Blume of Estes Park.

Barbara Jeanne DuBois Barbara Jeanne DuBois died on June 26, 2019 at the Estes Park Health Center after a short illness.

Barbara Jeanne DuBois was born in Lawrence, Kansas, on November 30, 1927, to Mary (Sawtelle) and Irvin DuBois. She grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and Bethel, Kansas She attended Quindaro Elementary through 6th grade and then White Church Elementary for 7th and 8th. She graduated from Washington Rural High School where she graduated as Salutatorian.

Then she attended Kansas City, Kansas Junior College where she graduated "cum laude." She worked for a time at Kansas University, where she was secretary to the Dean of the Journalism school, and she also worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Topeka, Kansas.

On September 1, 1948 she married James Warner Shriver. (When he told her he loved another lady, she divorced him). On March 25, 1955 she married Frank Lane. They were happily married for 63 and a half years. Frank was a professional square dance caller. (Mr. Lane was among the "best of the "best" in his profession and was exceedingly honored. He also was one of the founders of Callerlab - The International Society of Square Dance Callers.)

Together they traveled about 80,000 miles per year to all 50 states, and six foreign countries while pursuing his career. They would have gone to more foreign countries if Barbara didn't suf-

fer from severe sea sickness and didn't like to fly or sail. Barbara was his assistant. They worked a number of weekends and institutes and also taught round dancing around the country and worked regularly at Kirkwood Lodge at Osage Beach, Mo and Asilomar at Pebble Beach, Ca. They operated at Grosvenors Inn (Owned by Dorothy and Ted Grosvenor) in Big Thompson Canyon in Estes Park, CO for 11 years.

In 1967 they settled in Estes Park where they built their home and lived out their lives. In 1969 they built the Dance Ranch and operated it for 32 years until their retirement. For 12 years they spent winters in Green Valley, AZ. Barbara's hobbies were knitting, sewing, needle crafts, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, dancing, hiking and reading (until health made some of those things impossible). She also kept the books and did the taxes for their activities.

Barbara was a life-long Presbyterian and was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, her husband Frank and sister-inlaw Kathryn DuBois. She is survived by two brothers, Loring DuBois of Lees Summit, MO and Robert DuBois of Topeka, KS, two nephews, Steven DuBois of Lenexa, KS and Richard Albistegui-DuBois (Ellen) of Vista CA, and two great nephews, Kieran and Xavier Alabistegui-DuBois of Vista, CA. Private interment of cremated remains will take place at the Columbarium at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, Estes Park, CO. Donations may be made to the Community Church of the Rockies in care of Allnutt Funeral Home.

Robert H. Tucker

Robert H. Tucker was born September 27, 1925 to Robert Lee and Mollie Burrow Tucker, and passed on September 5, 2019 just a few days short of turning 94. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and his brother Clyde. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Linda Smith Tucker, his niece Gayla Amos and her family. He attended Calvert High School in Calvert, TX and attended college in Oklahoma. Because he and his father

had the same first name he was always called by his middle name Harvey.

Harvey served in the United States Navy for three years, he trained in San Diego, served in the USA, Marshalls, Marianas, Carolines, Pearl Harbor, Okinawa and Japan. Awarded AT, AP, Occ. Ribbons and 1 Battle Star. After his discharge from the Navy he worked as a Supervisor and Manager for Texaco, Inc. for over 35 years. He resided in Calvert & Houston, TX. He married Linda in 1951 in Bremond, TX and they resided in Hearne, TX and for many years in San Antonio, TX and Estes Park, Colorado. He loved playing golf, liked football, car racing and many other sports. Harvey loved traveling with his wife Linda. Harvey was a loyal, loving husband and is greatly missed.
