Elusive Pine Marten In Rocky Mountain National Park The pine marten is a member of the weasel family. Males are about two feet long, with an eight inch tail, and they weigh about 1 1/2 pounds. Females are a bit smaller than the males, and weigh half as much. Martens are mostly nocturnal, and generally solitary. They make dens in log or tree hollows, squirrel nests and burrows. Their habitats are forests of spruce, fir or lodge-pole pine. Their preferred food is the chickaree or pine squirrel; as well as nesting birds and voles and they also like to munch on plants and insects. Photo by Robert Burns
