Beautiful Buck Now that the elk rut has calmed down a bit, it’s time for our resident mule deer to get into the action. In Colorado, mule deer are gearing up for their mating season. It’s a good time to remember to be careful around the bucks, as they can be aggressive and unpredictable this time of year. Also, they are not paying attention to roads or vehicles so be on the lookout and watch for wildlife in and near the road at dawn, dusk, and in the first few hours after darkness. Keep in mind that where there is one animal, there are probably others—young animals following their mother or male animals pursuing a female.

Keri Kelly Recognized With Special “Estes Bright Spot” Designation

7,600 copies were printed this week, and distributed FREE to hundreds of Estes Valley locations including Allenspark, Glen Haven & Lyons.

The Estes Park in Bloom committee has awarded its most recent “Estes Bright Spot” designation to departing Parks Maintenance Worker Keri Kelly.

The committee presented Kelly with a framed certificate to recognize her years of service to the community and her dedication to the Estes Park in Bloom program.

Keri Kelly has served as Parks Maintenance Worker for the Town of Estes Park for 14 years. Prior to that, she served for two years as a seasonal employee. She was the driving force behind the Town’s participation in the America in Bloom program and the creation of the Estes Park in Bloom

committee. During her tenure with the Town of Estes Park, Kelly has been responsible for the design, planting, and maintenance of the vibrant floral displays throughout town. This includes 43 hanging baskets at the parking structure, 18 hanging baskets on public property downtown, 26 large planters displayed through the main corridor of downtown and nearby parks, 15 wine barrel planters at the interactive musical instrument sites, and about 60 annual

flower displays of various sizes containing over 20,000 annuals each year.

The designation of an “Estes Bright Spot” recognizes a business, organization or private residence that places emphasis on beautifully maintained landscapes, floral displays, environmental efforts, heritage preservation, and arts and culture. The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On October 7 at 11:22 p.m. police arrested a 35 year old male from Estes Park in the 300 block of S. St. Vrain Ave. who was wanted on a warrant out of Boulder, CO for failure to appear for driving under the influence (times four priors) and driving license evaded interlock. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On October 10 at 10:49 a.m. police contacted a 29 year old Estes Park male in the 1300 block of Manford Ave. and he was charged with domestic violence,

violating a restraining order and violation of bond conditions. He was transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On October 12 at 8:17 a.m. police arrested a 22 year old Estes Park male at Moraine Ave. and Elkhorn Ave. and charged him with public indecency. He was issued a summons and later released.

Deputies and police from Boulder County, Estes Park, Louisville and Glenwood Springs joined forces to find a man who was wanted for ID theft, burglary, vehicle theft and bond violations. On Thursday, October 10, a 33 year old male from Ward, CO, was arrested by Glenwood Springs police. He faces multiple

charges, including burglary, motor vehicle theft, identity theft and theft over $100,000 in at least four criminal cases in different counties. The cases all occurred within a three-day period. The cases included two from the Boulder County Sheriff 's Office, one from the Estes Park Police Department and one from the Louisville Police Department.

Charges filed in Estes Park include second degree burglary, theft, criminal mischief and obstructing a police officer.

The male is currently being held in the Garfield County Jail.

Community Support Has Fully Funded EPPD’s Startup Costs For First-Ever K9 Program By: Police Chief Wes Kufeld

On behalf of the Estes Park Police Department, I am excited to announce that we have reached our fundraising goal for our first-ever K9 unit. We want to wholeheartedly thank everyone in the community who has donated and voiced their support. We look forward to serving our community with this valuable resource. We reached out to our community and they responded with extraordinary assistance, fully funding the startup costs, and we are no longer accepting donations.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

During the week of October 6, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) responded to 9 calls for service. This included:

Funding for the program has covered the costs of Diego himself, a specialized K9 vehicle which includes an interior kennel with climate control and temperature alarms, a home living space/kennel, protective gear and training equipment.

One of the reasons this community is so incredible is because of a strong community desire to partner with the police department and become actively involved in public safety. The push to fund this program is only one example. The community, along with the Town Board, pulled together to make this program a reality.

Major Search Effort For Clues Pertaining To James Pruitt Disappearance In February Approximately fifty Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue Team members were involved in additional search efforts for James Pruitt last Wednesday, October 9. Pruitt was last heard from on February 28, 2019. Today’s search efforts were concentrated in off trail areas in the Prospect Canyon drainage and the Glacier Gorge drainage above Jewel Lake. Five teams, comprised of forty searchers, conducted grid searches in areas heavily covered with thick timber, dead and down trees, thick willow, tall grass and mountain streams.

Throughout the summer, smaller teams have focused specific search efforts in other segments of the search area. The general search area has also experienced significant visitation over the last four months. Unfortunately, no clues have been found.

Background: On March 3, 2019, search efforts began in the Glacier Gorge area of Rocky Mountain National Park for James Pruitt, 70, of Etowah, Tennessee.

After a vehicle parked at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead was determined to belong to Pruitt Sunday morning, March 3, rangers contacted Pruitt’s family in Tennessee. His family confirmed he was in the area and hadn’t been heard from since Thursday morning, February 28, at approximately 10 a.m. They were un-

3 through March 9. The overall search area encompassed approximately 15 square miles and included the Glacier Gorge drainage, the Loch Vale drainage and the Glacier Creek drainage.

Searchers concentrated efforts in the heavily forested areas near Bear Lake and the Glacier Gorge Trailhead, the

Nymph Lake area, Chaos Creek area, the Alberta Falls area, Lake Haiyaha, Mario’s Gully east of Lake Haiyaha and the winter trails to Mills Lake and The Loch. Off snow packed trails, searchers encountered chest deep snow in numerous areas.

Assisting Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue team members has been Larimer County Search and Rescue, Rocky Mountain Rescue based in Boulder County, Diamond Peaks Ski Patrol, Douglas County Search and Rescue, Alpine Rescue Team, numerous dog teams from Larimer County Search and Rescue, Search and Rescue Dogs of the United States, and the Colorado Search and Rescue Association.

On Tuesday, March 5, a multimission aircraft (MMA) from the State of Colorado assisted efforts with fixed-wing aerial reconnaissance over Sky Pond, Lake Haiyaha, Flattop Mountain and Bierstadt Lake.

It can be frustrating to find ourselves in situations where we feel heated. Someone says or does something that makes us lose our cool. “How could they behave that way?” we ask. It’s only appropriate to think that our reaction was merited when we reflect back and think, “Did you hear what they said?” There are times when we think that others cause our reactions. We think, “Well, if they didn’t come at me that way…” or “If they hadn’t said those fiery words…” I would have remained my usual calm and collected self. If we had a choice, we certainly wouldn’t choose to behave this way, right? Unfortunately, we often do and the thought process of blaming others takes away our own responsibility for our actions.

In these heated situations, it can be easy to forget that we are the ones in control of our response. And by distancing ourselves from our own reactions, we maintain that others are the ones in control.

This takes away our responsibility

(which can feel redeeming especially when we behave in a way we think we would not have otherwise!). We like to imagine the best version of ourselves coming to the table to work out conflict, yet when we present a less ideal version of ourselves, we tie it to the actions of the other party. We think that if it were not for the other party’s behavior, we would have responded differently.

That it was them, not us, that led us (or the conversation/ negotiation/relationship/etc.) astray. And the reality of the situation is that although it would be great to disassociate ourselves from our embarrassing behavior, it is unrealistic to think that the other person is causing us to be this way.

The best versions of ourselves do not always present in the moments when we are tested. And it’s easier to think that it is about others rather than ourselves.

However, we need to remember that we are the only ones who can control our emotions and responses. If we get stuck in a belief system that others are “making” us mad, then we are mistakenly led to perceive that others have power over our actions. (We would not think that people can control our minds, so why would we believe they are responsible for our behavior?)

The choice of response if a powerful tool that each of us has. We can choose - actually decide -- not to get angry, blow up, say something we might later regret, etc. and instead take a breather and respond instead of react. While this may not be easy, and might require a lot of practice, practice makes permanent (we’re not aiming for perfect here), and the result is a greater sense of satisfaction and control of our own response in even the most challenging situations.

Platte River To Provide Update On Resource Plan Second round of community listening sessions scheduled Platte River will host a second round of community listening sessions to update residents and businesses on the status of the organization’s 2020 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP).

The IRP is produced every five years and provides a roadmap for how energy will be generated in the future and delivered to Platte River’s owner communities of Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland. While a range of generation resources are evaluated, the plan will focus on identifying noncarbon resources in response to direction provided by Platte River’s Board of Directors to pursue a 100% noncarbon energy mix by 2030.

“We are committed to evaluating noncarbon energy sources while maintaining our core pillars to provide reliable, environmentally responsible and financially sustainable electricity to our owner communities,” said Jason Frisbie, general manager and CEO of Platte River. “As a public power provider, understanding the needs and wants of our owner communities is critical to our resource planning process and I look forward to sharing our progress.”

Currently, about 30% of the energy delivered to Platte River’s owner communities comes from noncarbon sources. That number will increase to approximately

50% by 2021 with the addition of 225 MW of wind power and 22 MW of new solar (plus battery storage) capacity.

The community meeting will feature a summary of resource modeling scenarios, a discussion of key assumptions and results from various impact studies including market analysis, regional economic analysis and distributed energy resources (DER) potential, among others.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of a panel of representatives from Platte River and each community’s utility and offer feedback after the presentation.

Next Drug Collection Scheduled Oct. 26 Police encourage safe disposal of unwanted prescription and over-thecounter drugs On Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. the Town of Estes Park Police Department will offer Estes Park’s Drug Take Back Day to collect unused, unwanted and expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs for safe disposal — no questions asked. “Now is a good time to mark your calendar and start collecting everything you want to get out of the medicine cabinet,” commented Officer Gregg Filsinger, who manages this free service for the community. The collection will be held in front of Rocky Mountain Pharmacy, located at 455 East Wonderview Ave. in Upper Stanley Village. Police officers will collect the drugs, which will remain in the custody of law enforcement officers until they can be incinerated.

Estes Park’s Drug Take Back Day is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s national campaign to provide a safe way for people to empty their medicine cabinets of unwanted and potentially harmful prescription drugs. To find participating collection sites in

other communities, visit www.dea.gov.

Misused and abused prescription drugs containing controlled substances can lead to cases of accidental poisoning, overdose and addiction. The most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that prescription medicines are the most abused drugs by Americans, next to marijuana. Seven of the 10 drugs most commonly abused by teenagers are prescription medicines and three quarters of teen prescription drug abusers obtain the drugs from family and friends — often from a home medicine cabinet.

Ridding homes of these substances greatly reduces the potential for abuse and accidental poisoning.

Items which cannot be accepted at the Drug Take Back Day collection sites are needles and sharps, mercury thermometers, oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, pressurized canisters, marijuana and illicit drugs. League of Women Voters To Present Program On TABOR And Proposition CC Join the League of Women Voters on October 23rd, at the Presbyterian Church of the Rockies, 10:00 a.m. to noon, to learn more about Proposition CC, which is on the November state ballot, and deals with changes to TABOR caps on state revenues.

TABOR is the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, passed in 1992. TABOR prohibits any tax increase without a vote of the people.

In addition, TABOR places strict limits on how much revenue the state can keep and how much it can spend. TABOR limits are the strictest revenue and spending limits in the nation. Proposition CC asks, “Without raising taxes and to fund schools, roads, etc., within a balanced budget, may the state keep all the revenue it collects and will show how the money is spent and what is retained?” If this new bill passes, there will be no refunds under TABOR. The Gallagher Amendment, passed in 1982, was designed to maintain a constant ratio between the property tax revenue that comes from residential property and from business property. To simplify a set of complex formulas, the

effect of Gallagher was to reduce the assessment rate (the percent of property value that is subject to taxation) whenever statewide total residential property values increased faster than business property values. As a result of the Gallagher Amendment, the assessment rate for residential property has declined by more than two-thirds over the years because of Colorado’s population growth and because of increases in residential real estate values. The net effect has been a marked decline in revenues collected from property tax, which prior to Gallagher, provided the majority of school funding.

Toni Larson, of the League of Women Voters of Colorado, will present what TABOR and Gallagher mean and explain Proposition CC, a ballot issue on November’s ballot, and why the League is supporting this initiative. Dr. Larson served as executive director of Independent Higher Education of Colorado for 30 years and conducted the government relations work for Colorado College, Regis University, and the University of Denver.

Ha! I knew I wasn’t alone. After I wrote last week about my preference to look up definitions in my old American Heritage dictionary—a hefty tome that provides the same comfort as a heavy blanket on the bed in winter—I learned that lots of people out there are still using their printed dictionaries rather than the Internet. [My comments are in brackets.]

Bill S. with Allnut Funeral Service said, “I, too, have two dictionaries at arm’s reach. One is a medical dictionary so I can TRY to interpret what some doctors have handwritten on death certificates. I still have to call them often to confirm before I finalize the legal documents. [I believe this requires a PhD in MD Handwriting Interpretation, Bill. But there are still a few of our wonderful docs in town who are reluctant to go paperless. I’m blessed that they are all within a few minute’s scenic drive, as I have to hand-deliver and pick up the documents from their office. While there, I get to visit a friend or two, whether they are working or visiting our wonderful medical facilities.�

Bill said, “My other dictionary is an old Merriam-Webster that I would prefer to use to look up a word rather than ‘google.’ The best part of that is checking out all the other words on the pages. There’s always something to learn. That’s something that Google and Bing don’t provide.� [So right you are, Bill. Sometimes I play a game: I try to find a page in the dictionary where I know every word on the page. Think it’s easy? Try it.]

A retired English teacher, Sharon B. chimed in: “I am a bridger; I use the Merriam-Webster dictionary app.� [I’m sorry, Sharon, I am going to have to look up the word bridger.

But should I look it up in the hardbound dictionary or on the Merriam-Webster app?]

Sharon also said, “I did experience pain, though, when I gave up my huge Roget’s when I downsized to move to Estes.â€? [Know what? I grew up thinking Roget was pronounced Rah-JET. It was a hard habit to break. And you’re right: Roget’s Thesaurus is a word orgy. If I start looking through mine when I am not under deadline, I can’t tear myself away. The array of words is deep, broad, and richer than pot de crème.]

Sharon continued: “Here is a column idea: address our habit of making nouns into verbs. You touched on it with ‘I googled it.’ It seems such a lazy habit. Hope I’m not ‘disrespecting’ you.� [You’ve tasked me with the idea of verbing. I’ll have to ponderize that one.]

Nan was accused of being a Google geek after telling us last week that no one has a dictionary anymore because everyone uses Google. She replied, “I haven't always been a Google geek. In third grade, as punishment for talking in class, Miss McDonald had me write the dictionary. I don't remember how

far I got but I know that I have had a respect and love for language that lasted throughout my life.� [Nan, I can think of better ways to get a child to love language. I counted 53 definitions on one randomly selected page. Did you even get past the first page?]

Becky U. said, “Ah, the beauty of dictionaries. You will really appreciate them if you read The Professor and the Madman. It was a best seller several years back, and was recently again recommended by Fareed Zakaria. It is a history of the decades, actually centuries, of the creation of the first comprehensive English dictionary‌the Oxford Dictionary.â€? [Sounds interesting. I’ll get to it as soon as I finish reading my Roget’s Thesaurus.]

Marcia T. said, “I love [the search engine] Bing. It is my go-to site EVERY DAY. I love to see the new photo they post and try to guess the location or even what part of the globe it is. I never go to Google. But still we use the term Google. We google something when we are actually using Bing. So what should we call it? [Boogle, perhaps? ] If everyone used Bing instead of Google maybe ‘binging it’ wouldn’t sound so strange.� [I agree, Bing does have a fun, colorful, educational home page. Then again, Google’s homepage is often entertaining too.]

Gary H. gave us the flip side of the coin: “Of course, the word ‘googol’ (which was the inspiration for ‘Google’) existed for quite some time. It was invented as early as 1935 by a mathematician to express 1 followed by 100 zeroes (10 to the hundredth power). “So, even though there’s a spelling difference, I’ve been using the word ‘googol’ for my entire (64.5-year) life. � [Since you’re 64.5-year-old who has always used the word googol, does that make you a googol geezer, Gary?]

Gary said, “I don’t think this is relevant to your article, except for the historical tidbit that Edward Kasner’s nine-year-old nephew invented the word that Google’s creative team riffed on.� [Riffed on? I’m Boogle Ginging that one for sure.]

Two days ago (October 16) was National Dictionary Day. I don’t think anybody would mind if we celebrated a little late.

Break out your favorite dictionary—hard bound, paperback, or online—and find a new word. Shout it out. Write it on your forehead. Whisper it to someone under the mistletoe. Stick it in an envelope and mail it to someone you secretly admire. Pipe it with frosting on top of a cake. Be magniloquent with it. Go ahead, look it up and whoop it up!

Know How To Properly Dispose of Sharps Estes Park Health has had many questions recently about the proper disposal of “sharps.” Sharps is a medical term for devices with a sharp point or edges that can cut or puncture the skin. Many people use sharps at home, work or while traveling to manage medical conditions like diabetes, cancer, arthritis, blood clotting disorders and more. Each year approximately nine million sharps users will administer at least three billion injections outside of a health care facility.

Estes Park Health Patient Care and Safety Committee wanted to share some important disposal tips with the Community to ensure we keep our community safe. Here are some tips for properly disposing of used sharps: • Sharps should always be placed in a strong, plastic container.

• Sharps should never be thrown loosely into the trash or toilet.

• Sharps that retract after use, or are very small, should be disposed of like all other sharps.

• Sharps should never be recycled.

Estes Park Health will take used sharps in the Emergency Department. Check at the Emergency Department Admissions Desk for directions. Sharps should not be placed in the Medication Take-Back Station located in the Estes Park Health Physician Clinic. Estes Park Health employees and volunteers are not allowed to handle sharps for any person but will direct you to the proper sharps disposal container in the Emergency Department.

There are also two locations in Northern Colorado for sharps disposal: Larimer County Landfill, 5887 S. Taft Hill Rd., Fort Collins, CO 80526 and Northern Colorado Health Network, 400 Remington St. Suite 100, Fort Collins, CO 80525. These locations require that sharps are brought in approved sharps containers. Sharps are not accepted in other containers or loose.

Rocky Mountain Craft Spirits Festival October 26th The Rocky Mountain region is home to a booming craft spirits industry. The Town of Estes Park and the Estes Park Events Complex are excited to announce the return of the Rocky Mountain Craft Spirits Festival Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019.

Distillers and consumers of fine spirits are invited to celebrate this craft at a special tasting festival. Great News! Lost Monkey Has Been Found!

Last week we reported about a little six-year-old girl named Laney who was devastated that she had lost her lifelong best friend Teddy, somewhere in Estes Park! Teddy is her purple sock monkey.

From Laney's grandma..."Ted was found! He was picked up downtown and given to foot patrol officer Steve Arnold! I have one overjoyed grand girl! She said that her Ted must have finally had enough of vacation!"

We are so happy. Thank you all for your help reuniting these best friends!

Regarding Paid Parking To the Editor, There are many reasons not to support a move to paid parking in Estes Park in 2020; it drastically changes to tone of our town (from being friendly and different to being just another mountain town), it’s elitist to charge money (it’s like a tax) to attempt to change people’s behavior, downtown workers and business owners have not been properly talked to or informed about paid parking in downtown, the proposed rates are too high, we are only at 71% utilization (85% is considered a problem) in downtown lots during the high season, there is potential of reduced sales taxes, there is potential to reduce visitor satisfaction, it treats business owners and workers badly, it’s already hard to get workers in EP (we don’t need other disincentives), there are just too many unanswered questions and there are many other viable options that should be considered first, just to name a few.

Paid parking would be a monumental change to our town. Much more significant than the Loop project, which only changes traffic flow. Paid parking changes the whole character of our town. Please urge Town officials to put this proposal on hold until all Stakeholders (like downtown workers and business owners) are talked with and the myriad of unanswered questions are fully answered. The budgets are being worked on right now and money should not be put toward paid parking at this time.

Estes Park Rotary Club Marks Progress Toward A Polio-free World Urges The Community, Visitors To Help End The Paralyzing Disease With polio nearly eradicated, Rotary and its partners must sustain this progress and continue to reach every child with the polio vaccine. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk. Rotary has committed to raising US$50 million each year to support global polio eradication efforts.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total yearly contribution of $150 million.

Rotary has contributed more than $1.9 billion to ending polio since 1985.

Rotary Club members in Estes Park are taking action to raise awareness, funds and support to end polio, a vaccine-preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today.

World Polio Day is Thursday, Oct. 24.

Club members are donating to Rotary’s International’s fund to end polio throughout the month of October at their weekly meetings. They are also encouraging online and mail-in donations. Enter The Photo Contest For 2020 Friendship Card The Rotary Club of Estes Park invites submissions to a photo contest for the 2020 Friendship Card for Local Discounts. There is no charge to enter, and the winner will receive photo credit on the card and two 2020 Friendship Cards.

The deadline for submitting photos is Friday, Nov. 1, 2019.

The Friendship Card debuted in 2019, replacing the long-time Rocky Card. The Rotary Club of Estes Park re-established the card as a fundraiser for club projects and community grants.

“In its first year, over 500 cards have been sold, and we anticipate that number to increase as people become aware of the value the card brings to local shoppers,” said Karen Thompson, Fund Development Director for the club.

In 2019, over 75 local businesses participated in providing some type of discount to cardholders. Each business displays a window decal announcing

participation in the program.

“Rotary is very thankful for all the participating businesses, especially the Estes Park News for their continuous advertising throughout the summer,” Thompson said.

Entering is easy. Photos capturing favorite scenes from the Estes Valley or Rocky Mountain National Park can be emailed in high resolution, jpg format to epfriendshipcard@gmail.com.

A panel of judges will select the winning photo. Cropping and slight color correction is allowed for photos, but judges will reject photos with anything added or deleted through a photo editing program.

All decisions of the judges are final.

The winner will be notified via email.

The winning photo may also be used on other marketing materials for the Friendship Card. Owner of the photo will not receive any other compensation other than photo credit and two 2020 Friendship Cards.

Día de los Muertos An Event For Everyone

On Tuesday, November 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. community members are invited to the Día de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) celebration. The annual festivities will take place in the commons area of the Estes Park High School and is free and open to the public.

The Day of the Dead is an ancient tradition from Central and South America.

It is an especially beloved holiday in Mexico when families honor their ancestors. The Mexican-American community of Estes Park comes together annually to celebrate and they welcome everyone to participate with them. It is a wonderful exchange of culture and integration that educates students and their families about Mexican customs and has been a successful event for five, consecutive years. In Mexico, Day of the Dead is celebrated from October 31 to November 2, however in Estes Park, the event is conducted later to allow children and families rest from the excitement of Halloween.

Day of the Dead is a happy occasion. It is a way for parents and grandparents to

educate their children about their deceased family members and ancestors. They do this by telling stories, playing music, and eating traditional food. Another custom is to exhibit photographs and favorite belongings of the deceased in an ofrenda or altar.

Traditionally, ofrendas are exhibited in the home and gravesites are cleaned and decorated with bright flowers, marigolds in particular, to lead a bright path for the spirits of their ancestors to visit one day of the year.

Special food is prepared, such as pan de muerto. In addition to the sweet bread, the community celebration in Estes Park will offer a feast of delicious Mexican food. Preparations have been thoughtfully made by a team of parents who enthusiastically wish to share their traditions with their families, the school, and greater community of Estes Park.

In addition to excellent food and festive decorations, a lively Mariachi band, Sol de mi Tierra, will perform throughout the evening. The whole event is an authentic representation of Latino culture and community.

“I DIDN’T COME HERE TO READ!” It was the World Series and the New York Yankees were hosting the Milwaukee Braves. Hank Aaron stepped into the batter’s box only to be greeted by the ceaseless chatter of Yogi Berra: “Henry, you’re holding that bat wrong. You’re supposed to hold it so you can read the trademark.” Aaron never spoke a word. As the next pitch crossed the plate, the home run king put the ball into the left-field bleachers. After rounding the bases and tagging up at home plate, he looked at the cheerless Yogi Berra and said, “I didn’t come here to read.”

How often do we allow distractions to take our focus off of more important things of life. These are usually not distractions that are wrong, rather things in this life that are good in and of themselves and which provide us a measure of joy, happiness, and satisfaction.

Those of us who have children know how busy our life becomes with all the different activities that our children become involved in. Then there is a yard that needs tending, a house that needs keeping up, a small business that needs expanding, pets and livestock that need care, a garden that needs tending, a 401K that needs adjusting, the automobile that needs fixing, clothes that need washing/drying/folding, meals that need preparing, dishes that need washing, the meeting that needs attending, fish that need catching, books that need reading, the Supermarket that needs shopping, and on and on we could go.

The problem is that by the time we tend to all of these we have forgotten about our marriage that needs nurturing and strengthening, our children that need loving and our personal involvement, sick friends that need visiting, others that need encouraging, relationships that need cultivating and strengthening, and our own spiritual needs that need ministering to.

How do we sort all those things out and make the choices that will ultimately result in our feeling that we used our time wisely…as shown by strong relationships, a loving family, good personal and mental health, and good prospects for the future, now and eternal?

Steven Covey, in his book ‘Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’ points out that there are four different categories into which all things fall. First, there are things that are ‘Urgent and Important’: an illness or injury or other emergency would fall in here.

Second, there are things that are ‘Urgent’ but ‘Not Important’. Most phone calls fall into this category. The ringing phone suggests that someone has something ‘urgent’ to share with us. We rush to answer it only to find that it is a salesman, solicitor, or ???. I suspect that many text messages are of this nature also. The third category consists of those that are ‘Important’ but not (seen as) ‘Urgent’.

Relationships fall into this group. Many businessmen find little time to spend with their children. Focus on the Family research discovered that the average father spends an average of only 15 minutes per week alone with each child in his family. Marriage relationships are falling apart all around us because couples spend little time alone with each other building their marriage. I did a wedding in Fort Collins recently in which I stressed the importance of these components to the happiness of their lives and the success of their married life together: ‘Commitment’; ‘Communication’; ‘Companionship’ : ‘Caring’, and ‘Kissing’. Each of these demand prioritizing and time. Certainly our spiritual development falls into this category. We need to spend time feeding and strengthening our souls and our relationship with God. However, all too often this is neglected as we pursue less important things. The fourth category Covey gives involves those things that are neither ‘Urgent’ nor ‘Important’. How much of our time is spent in front of a television set showing much that is neither ‘urgent’ nor ‘important’, (unless maybe a Broncos game)? The average family watches over six hours per day of television, viewing a plethora of things that are neither urgent nor important, while neglecting things that are much more needed and helpful.

So, what about us? Did we come to ‘read’? Or to ‘swing the bat’? Let’s ‘connect’!

Estes Park Elementary School To Host Scholastic Book Fair October 21-25 Estes Park Elementary School will host their Arctic Adventure Book Fair on October 21-25. The theme this year is, “Where there is snow much to read!” Funds raised will help purchase books for the media center, classroom libraries and students as well as providing funds for educational databases.

Families, faculty, and the community are invited to attend this fun reading event that helps inspire children to become lifelong readers.

BAS1S Architecture Celebrating 20 Years In Estes Park This fall marks 20 years in business for BAS1S Architecture + DesignThis anniversary allows us to pause and reflect on the community in which we’ve worked and the relationships we’ve built.

What makes us most proud and grateful is seeing how our projects have helped shape the lives of people who live and visit here.

When we moved to town in 1998, we were eager to plug into the community.

Specific to the building industry, Amy joined the board of Habitat for Humanity while Steve provided pro bono architectural services. Steve served on the Estes Park Building Code Appeals, two Larimer County code adoption committees, and a term on the Estes Valley Planning Commission. Beyond our professional capacities, we also wanted to give our time to organizations that support the community. Amy volunteered for the Quota Club and served on the board of the early childhood program Lifelong Learning of Estes Valley (LLEV). During that time, she helped start the Fit Family 5 Mile, which raised money for the school plus, in partnership with another non-profit, helped bring a new playground to Stanley Park.

Steve supported local education as member/chair of the Park R-3 District Accountability Committee (DAC) and the board of The Learning Place. Most recently, we’ve both been lending a hand to Estes Early Childhood Education. Volunteering our time made us aware of all the good-will in Estes Park and connected us with many of the extraordinary people that help make Estes Park a better place. The connections made through our service here are of great value to us.

One of our guiding principles is the belief that the space in which we spend most of our lives creates a foundation for our productivity, connectivity and happiness. When we see this in action in our projects, we feel like we’ve had an impact on a different level. Over these 20 years, having the chance to pair with owners with both passion and vision has allowed us to create and/or transform underutilized properties into welcoming, inspiring, comfortable, and sometimes a little eclectic buildings.

These spaces now become a place where the community comes together to celebrate, connect and engage with each other. Examples over the years include the recent transformation at Bird + Jim and Avant Garde Aleworks, new buildings at

Fall River Village Resort/ Skyview, and the Bridge at Black Canyon, plus some older favorites such as Eds Cantina and the East Elkhorn Building (Kind Coffee), RiversPointe Downtown (the former downtown Amoco station), and Kirks Fly Shop. All these projects helped create a physical environment in which businesses can thrive and provide residents and visitors an atmosphere that enriches their experience.

BAS1S has been behind many of the new, fresh images in town, enhancing business success through our graphic and branding work. Seeing the Library’s pinecone logo in mailings, Rockcut Brewing’s mountain hop on glasses raised to a toast, or the EDC’s diamond at business events reminds us of the importance and longevity of design and how it helps businesses connect with people. Our work with EPNPRC’s Give

Back program, Estes Valley Crisis Advocates, and the Estes Park Museum reminds us of the small piece we played supporting these organizations in all the good work they’re doing.

Beyond supporting the local economy, we’ve been very privileged to work on projects that improve the community as a whole. Projects seen through the lens of the visitor include: RMNP’s Alpine Visitor Center on Trail Ridge Road, our own Estes Park Visitors Center, the imminent Historic Stanley Home, as well as two decades of projects at YMCA of the Rockies: most recently, the LEED Certified Mountain Center. Relationships with faith leaders and communities have resulted in designs for an addition to Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, a Master Plan and new Dining Hall at Ravencrest, plus the Shepard of the Mountains and Rocky Mountain Churches. The creation of the Estes Park Good Samaritan Village and recent additions to the Harmony Foundation campus have provided us an opportunity to serve and enhance the lives of specific groups within our community. The opportunity to participate in and guide the visioning and development of the Estes Park Downtown Master Plan was a wonderful way to bring together our experience working in the Estes Valley and relationships formed over the years with guiding principles and a team approach.

While public buildings and civic spaces leave an impression on our community, our homes have a significant influence on our individual well-being. Small or large, custom or condo, our homes should reflect a thoughtful consideration of how space affects our daily lives: placement on the land, life habits, daylight and views, privacy and comfort.

We’ve had the pleasure of guiding many people into a custom home in which to enjoy retirement, and we’re excited to be playing a part in meeting the housing needs of the Estes Valley workforce with projects such as Alarado, Wind River, Peak View and Wildfire Meadows.

Some architecture firms focus on magazine covers or just the bottom line; our focus has always been on how our work can enhance people’s lives and enrich communities. We’d like to take this moment to thank all of our fantastic clients, past and present team members, consultants, contractors and town staff with whom we’ve worked. Congratulations to Gio Dumont, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for October 18, 2019.

At Estes Park High School, Gio is a member of the Environmental Club, Key Club and the National Honor Society. He is in the choir group, Major 13 and is in the cast of the fall musical, Legally Blonde. He has earned his varsity letter in choir in 9th and 11th grade and was a National Merit semi-finalist. Gio is a King candidate on this years Homecoming Court.

When Gio is not at school he likes hiking, skiing and playing guitar and he’s busy restoring a 1965 Ford Mustang.

12th Grade Gio’s favorite quote is “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything” by Mark Twain. He likes this quote because he says, “Honesty is a very important value to have, particularly when interacting with people.”

After high school, Gio plans to attend college and study biochemistry before potentially going on to medical school.

EPHS Marching Band Raising Funds For Charter Bus To Travel To State Competition Members of the Estes Park High School Marching Band are trying to raise $3,000 toward the price of the charter bus they need to take to the State Competition in Grand Junction, leaving November 3rd.

Young Republicans Meeting October 22

2019 Collector Holiday Ornament Available For Purchase Since 1986, the Town of Estes Park employees' Helping Hands Committee has created commemorative annual holiday ornaments for purchase by the public. The proceeds from ornament sales are used to provide high school senior scholarships and assistance to local families in need. The 2019 ornament features a photo of a black bear taken in Rocky Mountain National Park by Kris Hazelton.

Ornaments are available for $14 each at several Estes Park locations: Estes Park Town Hall at 170 MacGregor Avenue, the Estes Park Visitor Center at 500 Big Thompson Avenue, and Peaks Hallmark in Upper Stanley Village. A limited number of ornaments from previous years are also

available at Town Hall.

Ornaments may also be ordered by mailing your request and payment (no cash) to the Town of Estes Park Helping Hands Committee at P.O. Box 1200 in Estes Park, CO 80517.

Please calculate your order total to include shipping costs. Shipping for one ornament is $6.00, shipping for two ornaments is $6.50, shipping for three ornaments is $12.50, and shipping for four ornaments is $13. Payment with a card is an option; however, additional fees will apply.

Suggestions For Entering The Tablesetting Event By: Tara Moenning

Have you thought about participating in the Tablesetting event but you don’t know where to start?

Here are some suggestions that might spark an idea for you: 1. A good place to begin is your china cabinet. Do you have a special piece of china or crystal that has been passed down through your family? Do you have a special tea service, serving bowl, or centerpiece that could be used as the theme for a tablesetting?

2. Another good place to look for inspiration would be your book shelves or movie collection.

Is there a special book or movie that you enjoyed that could be the basis for a tablesetting?

3. Maybe your photo albums might

give you an idea about a special dinner that you remember and would like to share with others.

Once you have an idea you will be amazed at how quickly the items you need to complete your project will appear. You can also browse through the thrift shops and find tableware to enhance your theme. Friends are also a great resource for just that special item that you might need to complete your setting.

A great example was the display recently in the library window. Andy Smith took an idea for “Mr. McGregor’s Garden” from the Beatrix Potter books and made a stunning setting. Here both the children’s books by Beatrix Potter and the movie about her life were inspirations. A book or movie can usually be found as a support for any theme.

Registrations are available on the website, estesparkmuseumfriends.org/tablesetting. Because the tables are limited, early registration is recommended. The deadline is November 1st.

The set up day is Friday, November 15th, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Judging will occur that evening. All awards will be on the displays the following day, November 16th, and available for public viewing on Saturday and Sunday, November 16th and 17th, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The prizes will be presented at the Awards Ceremony at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Sponsorships are still being sought. To date we have received support from the Bank of Colorado, State Farm Insurance Agency, Bird and Jim’s Colorado Homestead, Macdonald Book Shop, Wynbrier Ltd. Is There A Novel In You? Try The NaNoWriMo Challenge

Income Potential

Have you ever wondered if there might be a novel inside you, just waiting to be written? This November, you could make it happen.

Best of all, you can draw upon the positive encouragement of others who are also working toward the same exciting aspiration: one novel written in one month.

November is National Novel Writing Month — or NaNoWriMo. Whether you’re a longtime writer or you have an idea whispering in your brain, the library is providing opportunities to get you into the NaNoWriMo groove. Why not use this as a springboard to awaken your inner author?

As Fort Collins author Kristin Owens explained to us recently, NaNoWriMo challenges participants to finish a rough draft of their novel in thirty days by writing 1667 words a day. That fast pace is intentional: if liberates writers from second-guessing, over-analysis, and getting distracted in time-consuming research. Writers simply write, letting creativity flourish, leaving editing for later.

Launched in 1999, NaNoWriMo is a national nonprofit organization. As its

website states, “NaNoWriMo helps you track your progress, set milestones, connect with other writers in a vast community, and participate in events that are designed to make sure you finish your novel. Oh, and best of all, it’s free!”

And it’s for all ages: there is a NaNoW-

riMo Young Writers Program as well.

Unlike the 50,000 word goal for adults, young writers can set their own wordcount goal.

Don’t worry: no one’s going to read your first draft. Unless you choose to seek someone’s feedback, your work is just between you and the paper or screen you write upon. You can sign up at NaNoWriMo.org—then attend our local NaNoWriMo events along with other local writers.

Kevin Wolf is one of those writers. For him, it all started years ago—when he’d read several published novels and thought to himself, “I could write something as good or better than that.” Now he’s a published author himself, with several successful mysteries to his credit.

Kevin will lead our next workshop: “Your Novel—From Idea to Publication” on Saturday, October 26 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. He’ll discuss how to find your writing strengths, with insights into how to begin and complete a manuscript, and advice on securing an agent and contacting publishers.

The library’s “NaNoWriMo Kick-Off ” program is Friday, November 1 from 2 to 4 p.m., where you can meet other writers and take time to get those first words flowing.

Those are followed by several “Come Write In @ the Library” sessions later in November. Don’t forget: the Quiet Room on the second floor is an ideal space for your deep thinking to flourish.

Writers are quick to remind us that NaNoWriMo is a personal challenge, but not a competition. Instead, it’s about creative people coming together to support one another. We can’t think of a better place to make that happen that the positive and cozy setting of our hometown library.

Bright Christmas Program Gearing Up For 35th Year-Helping Families In Need Estes Park Bright Christmas is celebrating its 35th year of coming alongside families with children who need help with Christmas. We are currently gearing up for the 2019 Program.

The community support we receive to help families in need is amazing! Each Christmas we are able to help an average of 125-130 families. Families have been “adopted” by other families, businesses, churches, clubs and individuals for Christmas gifts. KREV-LP is facing unusual challenges in its fundraising efforts this fall. In addition to seeking support for daily operations, the station is moving from its former location on Woodstock Avenue.

Last spring, we lost our station manager to pancreatic cancer, with all of her knowledge of current and planned operations. Another surprise was the sale of the building we occupied to the Town of Estes Park to be used as the center for the coming broadband service.

We have moved our studio to another location. The transmitter and tower remain at the current location under a short-term lease until we can obtain the required approvals from the FCC and the Town of Estes Park for a new location in a nearby property. This has not been an easy process.

Although a precise time table for the move has not been determined, we will be off the air for a day or two in late October or early November while the physical move of the tower and transmitter and needed electrical connections are completed.

Because so much of our time and attention has been focused on the tower move, we have not been able to contact potential underwriters in person. Consequently, KREV-LP seeks both new underwriters and donations to help defray the cost of the tower move.

Underwriting opportunities are available for a number of the daily or weekly programs that offer a diverse mixture focusing on community specific information, educational, religious, and secular programs, and a variety of music. In addition to generating financial support for the station, increasing awareness throughout the community, including both local residents and visitors, is an equally important goal.

Established in 2002 as a low power FM radio station to serve as a source of information and entertainment for the Estes Valley, KREVLP operates 24/7 at 104.7 FM. Community partners include the Park Valley School District, Estes Park Health, and the Police Department and Fire District, who contribute information and educational programming. Indepth interviews with local leaders help inform residents about community issues. The diverse music offerings are designed to reach out to as many Valley residents as possible and run the gamut from Latino and German to Oldies, Gospel and Classical. Estes Valley Latino residents can receive Spanish language programming and announcements, especially emergency, educational, and safety announcements.

Estes Park Al-Anon Curtis is one of 19 artists featured at The Old Gallery in Allenspark, a nonprofit center for community, the arts and visitors on Colorado Highway 7.

She works primarily in stoneware and porcelain and creates functional pieces that are beautiful and feel good in the hand.

“My favorite quote is by George G. Booth, a member of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (1917) who donated the land for the Cranbrook complex,” she said. Booth said, “To beautify our lives, to beautiful the plain things of daily use, this is the simplest beginning…of art.” Curtis added, “I like it when someone tells me that a cup or bowl I designed is what they use all the time.”

Buhrman is co-director of the Rocky Mountain Institute of Yoga and Ayurveda in Boulder, CO, where she practices ayurvedic medicine and teaches pranayama, meditation and yoga philosophy and psychology. She received her Ph.D in anthropology at the University of Colorado and is a student of yoga master Baba Hari Dass.

Located at 14863 Highway 7 at the entrance to Allenspark, The Old Gallery is 20 minutes south of Estes Park and 20 minutes from Lyons.

The Old Gallery provides art, education, entertainment and social services to area residents and visitors, including the Community Cupboard Food Bank, Community Closet, yoga and tai chi classes.

The Estes Valley Community Center Introduces Corrina Hedlund Hedlund has been in the fitness industry for over a decade as she turned a passionate hobby into a successful career. St. Bart’s Prepares For Holiday Bazaar – Order Your Pasties Now! It is a long journey from Cornwall, England to Estes Park but the pasties (pass-tees) are here! A pastie is a round piece of dough filled with savory meat and vegetables. It is folded in half to make a “D” shape with a crimped edge.

Traditionally eaten by tin-miners in Cornwall, it is an easy hand-held sandwich.

St. Bartholomew’s Holiday Bazaar first started in 1974 as the ‘Country Kitchen Fair’ which involved food and handmade gifts. Since then, the Bazaar has been known as the ‘Holiday Fair’ or ‘French Fair’ depending on the food that was served, and the menu alternated each year depending on the theme. However, in 1986, Mary LeCuyer’s daughter was living in England and sent home a pastie recipe. The first pastie luncheon was in 1986 and it has remained ever since! Some of the original Episcopal Church Women who started the Bazaar and/or the pastie luncheon were Mary LeCuyer, Audrey Clearman, Ruth Moorhead, Dorothy Greer, Rosa Thomson, and Joy Gimar.

Dave Orrison is organizing this fundraiser on behalf of The Chapel of the Interlude. Donations are 100% tax deductible.

In 1976, the Big Thompson Canyon was devastated by a flood that took the lives of 144 people. The Chapel stood as a place of hope and encouragement in the heart of the tragedy. In 2013, the Big Thompson flooded again, bringing even more water and destruction. The Chapel was damaged but restored to serve the community and the Lord. Then, in 2016, fire destroyed the Chapel building.

Stymied by years of road reconstruction, the small congregation is finally ready to bring the Chapel back to Drake, Colorado.

In the mountain neighborhood of Drake, Colorado, the Chapel stood as a testimony to the love of God and the resilience of community. Some of the thousand or so folks that call Drake their home live on Storm Mountain. Some live in the Big Thompson Canyon. Over the

sixty years it stood, the Chapel served Drake residents and others as a gathering place to worship, to remember friends who had passed, and to celebrate weddings and other happy events.

Harold and Agnes Mincer had a vision for shining the light of God's love in their community. At their own expense, they built an A-frame where people could stop to pray or give thanks on their way between Loveland and Estes

Park. They called it, "the Chapel of the Interlude." With beautiful wood ceilings and stained-glass windows, the Chapel provided a comfortable place to commune with God in the beauty of His creation.

Eventually, a group began gathering on Sundays and became a non-denominational church. Regular services began in the late 1960s. In 1976, the Big Thompson River flood took the lives of over a hundred people and the homes and businesses of many more.

The tragedy drew the people together, and the little Chapel stood strong to help. The building grew as the congregation grew. Then, again in 2013, the Big Thompson flooded with even more force than before. The community was better prepared, but lives, homes, and businesses were again destroyed.

The Chapel building sustained significant damage from the 2013 flood but was restored through an estimated 2500 hours of volunteer labor and nearly $100,000 of contributions. With no flood insurance, the sacrifices of the small congregation and extended Chapel family brought the ministry back to Drake. For eighteen months, the Chapel stood again as a light and testimony to the community.

In March of 2016, the flood-spoiled house next to the Chapel was set on fire.

It had been neither restored not demolished after the flood. The fire quickly moved from the house to the Chapel. Although several fire departments responded and tried to save the building, it was declared unsafe and demolished during the summer. From that time on, the congregation has worshiped at the community association building.

While there was no flood insurance to restore the Chapel, there was fire insurance. The congregation intended to begin work on a new building on the same property as quickly as possible. However, that fall, long-term and extensive reconstruction of Highway 34 began, causing major closures for many months. Bringing in materials, workers, heavy equipment, and more for rebuilding was out of the question. The only people allowed through the canyon for the next two years were those who lived there and held official permits. Like many mountain communities, Drake is accessible by only one road.

Building plans waited until the road was complete. Since both the road and the riverbed were to be moved, we could not be certain that our original lot would remain, Today, we are working with county and state offices to satisfy new zoning and building restrictions. Because we have had to wait so long to rebuild, several "grandfather clauses" have

expired. We are negotiating a complicated system of restrictions and requirements with the help of a competent local engineering firm.

Spring of 2020 has become our target date to begin rebuilding. Our insurance settlement has been carefully protected but will provide a little more than a third of the expected costs, partly because of new zoning requirements to complete the project, we need to raise nearly $400,000.

Mountain communities provide many challenges for those who live in them.

With limited access, building sites are hard to find and often difficult to use.

Drake is a small community with little room for growth. Our goal is a building that would seat about eighty and provide a meeting facility for church and community functions. After considerable searching for alternate property (we didn't waste the two years waiting for the road to open), we have decided to try to move back on our original lot. That lot is tiny by the standards of any church project, only about 80 x 120, and much of that is unavailable because of flood plain restrictions and road easements. The current building plan is about 40 x 80 with a single story on the hill side (which is bordered by a small road) and two-story on the side of the river and main access road. This should allow us to provide easy handicapped access to the worship area, with storage and utilities below. Adequate parking is available.

We believe this simple building will serve the needs of the community for years to come.

The closest church of any kind, other than the Chapel, is a half-hour drive for our folks on the mountain. We believe it is important for this community, which has suffered so much, to have a standing testimony to the love and faithfulness of God. Because we were able to meet at the community building during the road reconstruction, the Chapel family was able to serve the community through a challenging time. As our time at the community building draws to an end, our own building will again be that light and encouragement to the people of Drake.

Being Bear Aware - Hyperphagia By The Numbers Twenty chicken sandwiches, 10 large orders of french fries, 10 soft drinks and 10 milkshakes. That’s the approximate fast food order needed to total 20,000 calories, the amount Colorado Parks and Wildlife says a hungry black bear needs to consume every single day as they pack on the pounds to build up their fat reserves to survive winter hibernation.

While Coloradans are enjoying the sights and sounds of autumn, bears are reaching the peak of hyperphagia, an instinctive metabolic response to the changing seasons. Hyperphagia triggers a “feeding frenzy” to gain much-needed fat storage to help ensure winter survival. Bears will continue their intense search for food for up to 20 hours per day through mid-December, or when natural food sources are no longer available. As colder autumn weather brings frost and freezing to the state and natural food sources begin declining, bears may look to humans for easily accessible

meals.

“Since early April, our staff has received nearly 5,000 bear incident report calls, and over half of those have been about bears finding food sources,” said CPW Interpretation and Wildlife Viewing Coordinator Mary McCormac. “If given a choice between foraging for food for 20 hours or getting all the calories needed from a few dumpsters in one alley, which would you choose?

Bears are extremely smart and will try to get as many calories as quickly and as easily as they can before denning for the winter. That really puts it on us as humans to be responsible with our property, especially our trash.”

With the need to quickly build fat reserves, bears will seek out food sources that provide a higher caloric intake such as fallen fruit, nuts and especially the types of meals found in your trash can or bird feeders. Giving bears easy access

to food allows them to become overly comfortable in populated areas. This often leads to bears becoming more aggressive and increases the possibility of a dangerous human-bear conflict.

“This time of year, CPW fields dozens of calls each day regarding bears turning over trash cans, entering homes and showing little to no fear of people when looking for food,” said McCormac. “The only reason we get so many of these calls is that people are being careless; not locking their doors, not securing their trash, keeping bird feeders out and generally not being careful when they know bears are looking for an easy meal. Living responsibly with bears is everyone’s responsibility.”

Clean your trash cans regularly.

Don’t store food of any kind in an unlocked garage, flimsy shed, or on or under your deck.

Don’t leave anything with an odor outside, near open windows or in your vehicle, even if you’re home. That includes scented candles, air fresheners, lip balms and lotions.

Clean-up thoroughly after picnics in the yard or on the deck, cleaning your grills after each use. Don't allow food odors to linger.

Only feed birds when bears are denning for the winter. If you want to feed birds when bears are active, bring in liquid or seed feeders at night, or when you leave the house.

If you have fruit trees, pick fruit before it gets too ripe. Don't allow fruit to rot on the ground. Electric fences provide good protections for small orchards.

Teach Bears to Remain Wild If a bear comes close to your home, scare it away. Loud noises like a firm yell, clapping your hands, banging on pots and pans or blowing an air horn sends most bears running.

Utilize electric fencing, unwelcome mats and scent deterrents like ammonia to teach bears that your property is not bear-friendly.

If a bear enters your home, open doors and windows and ensure it can leave the same way it got in. Don’t approach the bear or block escape routes.

Never approach a bear. If a bear won’t leave, call your local CPW office. If a bear presents an immediate threat to human safety, call 911.

Robert L. Munkres

Robert L. Munkres, born August 18, 1930, died on October 13, 2019 in Estes Park, Colorado. Bob was born and raised in the North Platte Valley of Nebraska, the son of a rancher and a school teacher. He graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University and subsequently received his doctorate from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. In the 1950’s Bob was a seasonal ranger-historian at Fort Laramie National Historic Site. He first taught political science at the University of Wisconsin Extension Division and then from 1960 until 1999 he was a beloved professor of political science and history at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. Following his retirement, Bob continued to teach a course at Muskingum on American

Indians until 2004 when he and his wife Jeannette moved to Estes Park.

Bob published three books, including Saleratus and Sagebrush, numerous chapters in other books, and more than 300 articles and reviews in journals and magazines. For over 41 years Bob was an important contributor to the Tombstone Epitaph, and readers of the Epitaph will miss his unique and interesting pieces on Western history.

Since moving to Estes Park, Bob was a regular speaker on topics of Western history at Rocky Mountain National Park.

Bob’s loving wife Jeanette died in 2013. Bob and Jeannette were committed educators, but they were also committed mentors for students both in and out of the classroom. They maintained these relationships long after the students had left Muskingum. In fact, they remained involved with their lives, careers and families until the day of their deaths. For that, many will be forever grateful.

Bob is survived by his twin brother, Dr. James Munkres of Massachusetts.
