Rodeo News Cervi Rodeo has been around professional rodeo for half a century and has many accolades that come with that type of experience.

For the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, the Cervis’ Circle I brand has been a key part of the event’s success over the last five years. The rodeo committee and the town of Estes Park are expecting that to continue, as the town recently agreed to renew its contract with Cervi Rodeo for another five years.

“We are excited that the town of Estes Park has been successful in renewing its agreement with our livestock producer,” said Mark Purdy, chairman of Estes Park Western Heritage Inc., a group of volunteers that works with the town of Estes Park to produce the annual rodeo.

“Over our first five years with the Cervi family, we have been nominated virtually every year for the PRCA’s Medium Rodeo of the Year, and we believe the Cervis have a great deal to do with that. We’re also excited to have a Colorado-based firm to produce our rodeo every year.”

Mike Cervi founded Cervi Rodeo in 1967 and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2003. Over that time, the outfit was twice named the PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year. He has now handed the operation over to his sons, Binion and Chase.

The firm also produces the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo as well as many other top rodeos across the country. It has been innovative with its outreach program to fill roughstock events and helping rodeos network with each other.

“They have demonstrated a passion to give back to the rodeo community, and they have always provided innovative parade ideas,” Purdy said. “They arrange great bucking horses and bulls for our rodeo each year, and they also recognize that the town owns Rooftop Rodeo, and Cervi Rodeo is the provider. We all know what to expect, and that makes our relationship very strong.”

The Estes Park Museum – Preserving Community Identity The Estes Park Museum cultivates a passion for Estes Park history by conducting activities that preserve, share and respect the unique history of our community. While municipal museums are not unheard of, they are not necessarily common either. In fact, I am often asked why the Town operates a local history museum. From a purely pragmatic perspective, the Town runs the Museum because we agreed to do so after being asked to in 1992 by the nonprofit running the Museum at that time. However, there is a more fundamental reason the Town spends public dollars on this service: community identity.

The artifacts and information collected and exhibited by the Museum are a way of preserving and sharing the stories that have played a significant role in creating the community that we know and love today. These are the stories of the people, organizations, and events that have shaped Estes Park and their preservation ensures that our town’s sense of self can be strongly rooted in a shared history. Given the important task of preserving these stories, the Town has a responsibility to ensure that information and artifacts are collected and protected now and into the future.

The quality of any Museum relies heavily on the quality of the people that manage and support it. We are fortunate in Estes Park to have three professionally trained staff (a director and two curators), a supportive Estes Park Museum Friends and Foundation Board, and a large cadre of well-trained and passionate volunteers that keep our Museum running smoothly. These talented staff members and volunteers have their hands full with three cornerstones of Museum operations: (1) managing the collection, (2) taking care of Museum properties, and (3) creating educational programming and exhibits.

A museum’s collection is the foundation for everything that it does. The Estes Park Museum cares for over 30,000 locally significant artifacts -

varying in size from a postcard to an authentic Stanley Steamer – and receives new donations every year! The collection is constantly growing as every day that passes adds more history to our town, and more items of historical significance to collect.

Caring for artifacts and managing the acceptance of new donations is only part of the job. The Museum is also responsible for managing and maintaining five properties (the Gallery, the Collections Annex, the Historic Fall River Hydroplant, the Birch Cabin and the Birch Ruins) and presenting educational programming for the general public.

Each of the properties managed and maintained by the Museum plays an important role in preserving and sharing local history: the Gallery serves as the main exhibit space; the Collections Annex is where the artifacts are stored and cared for; and the Historic Fall River Hydroplant, Birch Cabin, and Birch Ruins are exhibits unto themselves and represent important pieces of the history of Estes Park.

The final operational cornerstone for the Museum is the creation of educational programming and exhibits. These elements of the museum experience give residents and guests the opportunity to explore local history and artifacts in a more in-depth manner. Programming and exhibits help to tie the artifacts in the collection with the stories and meaning behind them, creating richer stories about the people, organizations, and events that have laid the foundation for our community.

Whether you are a local, a longtime visitor, or are experiencing our community for the first time, I strongly encourage you to visit the Museum and learn a bit more about the vibrant history of Estes Park. Museum staff and volunteers are always learning more about Estes Park and always have more to share with those who stop by. The Museum Gallery, located at 200 Fourth Street, is open year-round, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. See you there!

Reach Out To Help Your Community -- Donate To Blue Santa Through Dec. 8 Donate at locations across town Every holiday season, the Blue Santa program collects non-perishable food, gifts and hygiene products for disabled, shut-in and elderly community members that need a little extra holiday cheer. Blue Santa is sponsored by the Estes Park Police Department Auxiliary.

It is anticipated that Blue Santa will assist nearly 100 people this year, and it’s not too late to nominate someone in need of assistance.

Members of the Blue Santa team also visit residents of Prospect Park and Good Samaritan Society, visiting with seniors and singing carols.

There are several ways to support the Blue Santa program. Monetary donations may be dropped off at the Estes Park Police Department, 170 MacGregor Ave., or mailed to: Blue Santa Pro-

gram, c/o Estes Park Police Auxiliary, P.O. Box 1287, Estes Park, CO 80517.

Non-perishable food and/or hygiene products can be left in one of the many Blue Santa boxes around town, or a monetary donation may be left in one of the Blue Santa jars. Monetary donations allow the Police Auxiliary to purchase food and gifts to supplement donated items.

Every penny donated will be used to fund items for Blue Santa recipients.

We had a game plan for Thanksgiving: drive straight up the middle and don’t stop until we get there. But Old Man Winter took the opportunity to remind us who wins every time, with his first downs coming one after the other in the form of cold and ice and snow. At the last minute he showed mercy and called a time out. I quickly gathered in a huddle with my lifelong coach, we decided to go for it, and we took off for the goal line: Omaha.

We made it! What a team, Mom and me.

As we drove through America’s heartland toward the largest city in Nebraska, I patiently answered Mom’s questions numerous times.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“To Omaha to spend Thanksgiving with Ned and his family. He’s your oldest son.”

“Why are the crops brown?” she wondered aloud.

“It’s winter so the fields are resting, Mom. The crops will grow again in the spring.”

“Why are there so many towers?” she asked in awe. I had never noticed all the towers. They’re everywhere. As soon as we passed one, another would appear on the horizon.

“Good eye, Mom! The towers all have something to do with communications.

Radio towers, cell phone towers, telecommunications.”

“Gobble, gobble. Easy on the throttle,” she read aloud the digital sign as we pass it, then laughed freely. It was a beautiful sound.

After a while she said, “I feel sorry for the farmers. Look at all that water!”

I didn’t have an answer for that one.

There was so much water! Interstate exit ramps disappeared into standing lakes.

Stop signs marked drowned intersections, power lines and fence posts rose up from mirrors of water.

Tree skeletons stood bony and bare, their roots rotted from months of saturation. Irrigation systems, stretching across corduroy rows in the fields, appeared rusted and rejected, unused for months. We saw abandoned houses, some stranded on islands surrounded on all sides by a Midwest sea. Sometimes we looked out over the breadbasket of America and instead of beholding amber waves of grain, there was water as far as we could see.

The floods began in Nebraska last March.

The late-winter ground was frozen so when the rain came, it couldn’t be absorbed. It rained more and continued to rain. Interstates—some under 15 feet of water—were shut down. Bridges collapsed.

Livestock drowned. Crops were washed away.

Eight months later, the water is still there.

In the Colorado Front Range flood of 2013, when the skies opened up with 12 inches of rain in just the first three hours

of a multiple day deluge, buildings were swept away, sewer pipes busted open and roads crumbled and disappeared. Fifteen hundred homes and 200 businesses were destroyed in Larimer County alone. People were stranded. Rescues were conducted by zip line across raging rivers.

Eventually, the rain stopped. The sun came out and the water started to recede.

All that water ran downhill, away from our high altitude town.

In Nebraska, which some people call the flatlands, there is no place for floodwater to go. It can’t drain away downhill because it is downhill. There is no prediction for when the land will be dry again. The new lakes in Nebraska may be permanent.

When my mom said she felt sorry for the farmers, it came from her heart. Her father loved working the land more than anything, and corralled his barefoot daughters into helping with the huge garden he kept after working his day job. He taught his girls to respect the land and the farmers who tilled it and toiled over it, including her own kin. The richness of black soil, the promise of green winter wheat, the sound of snapping a pea—these things are in Mom’s DNA. So as we drove past the dry areas of rural Nebraska and looked out at pastel blue skies above tawny fields at rest (one of my favorite color combinations—that light blue against the blond stalks in the fields), Mom leaned her head back against the headrest, closed her eyes and said, “This is livin’.”

And when the sky changed and clouds began to appear, she marveled more than once at the magnificence of their shapes, shades, and shadows. Her awe at the sights around her, as if she were seeing everything for the very first time, was infectious.

As we sped along the Interstate and I tried to view the surroundings through my mother’s childlike wonder, I grew to know Thanksgiving as it is truly meant to be.

Often when I take my mother on an outing, she remarks about the number of trees that cover the landscape. She is astounded at the rolling hills. She exclaims about the cold. “It’s a whole different world,” she says. Every time. I will miss it when she can’t say it anymore.

I look at my mom and observe the curiosity that has never left her, I watch her light up with surprise and delight at the smallest of things, and I sense her trust in me as I try to keep her world from shrinking.

I take her soft, cool hand, kiss her tender cheek and say, “This is livin’.”

EPHS FFA To Host Labor Auction

Estes Park High School FFA is hosting an FFA Members Auction on December 11th at the Estes Park High School Commons. Admission is free, doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the auction starts at 7:30 p.m. The evening will include finger foods, desserts and beverages.

FFA members will be auctioned off in trade of eight hours of labor. The FFA member will be willing and prepared for any eight hour task chosen by the buyer.

Starting bid for each member is $40.

Your contribution-The money you contribute to the Estes Park FFA chapter will be used to purchase new members official dress FFA jackets. In addition to new jackets, the money will be used to cover the costs of our annual trip to the National Western Stock Show in January.

Freddy Freddy has been waiting for his forever family and we hope he gets adopted soon! He is a good boy and does well with other dogs. He is great in the house and on a leash. He is a four year old lab shar-pei mix who weighs 60 lbs. Fred has seizures and is on medication, but it is very manageable. Luckily he has a loving foster home to take good care of him.

I have had several fun weeks. The week before Thanksgiving, I went with my friend Lorie to Florida for some sun and sand. She has a time share at Indian Rocks Beach. We just relaxed and did our “thing.” Then it was rushing home to get ready for the big Turkey Day. Marie, Lexie, Nathan, Greg and Cecelia were able to join in our day of Thanksgiving and overeating. Later we played games. I so wish they would learn bridge as they beat me in all the games we play. I know I could beat them in bridge.

Friday was the Catch the Glow Christmas Parade. Greg and Cecelia had graciously sponsored the Ballet Renaissance group and the Rocky Ridge School of Music. His 1948 dump truck was decorated in the theme of “The Nutcracker” as a giant rat. It was clever and cute with big ears and whiskers. I went as a very large mouse. My costume was over so many layers of clothing I never once was cold. All went well until the last moment of the parade. Greg had to stop suddenly, and the truck stopped for good. We got to see the rest of the parade as it passed by and we waved back and forth. I felt so bad for Greg, but he kept in good spirits as he figured out what to do. Meanwhile most of the group left to walk to their cars but the family remained true, Cecelia. Marie, Lexie and me. We finally got rides by a very nice policeman to our cars and later Greg got the truck started and returned home safe and sound. We all had a great time even with our serendipitous adventure.

Saturday was spent watching and lov-

ing the Alabama loss to Auburn and L.S.U.’s victory against Texas A&M Geaux (Go) Tigers! Then to top off a great day, Marie and Lexie came to visit, and Lexie decorated my tree and placed all my dolls around it. Nathan joined us later to help finish off the turkey. What a wonderful weekend which ended on Sunday with church and breakfast. I cooked Sunday for all the potluck invites I am attending this week. One of the new recipes follows. The original was in Food Magazine, but I found it too sweet, so I am changing it for you with the original in notes ( ). Also, brown butter seems the “item” of today just as kale and cauliflower were the last few years.

Maple Blondies 350 degree oven (If cooks too fast, lower to 325) 13 x 9 greased pan Line pan with foil, overlapping so you can remove blondies easily. Grease foil.

1 cup chopped pecans (walnuts) 2 ¾ cups flour plus 1 Tbs. flour (2 ¾) Scant ½ tsp. baking soda (1/2 tsp.) ¼ tsp. salt (1/2 tsp.)

2 sticks butter cut into pieces. (unsalted) 1 cup packed brown sugar (1 ¼ cup) ½ cup maple sugar 2 large eggs, room temperature 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. maple flavoring Frosting 1 1/2-stick butter (1 ½ stick unsalted and ¼ tsp. salt) room temperature Optional dash of salt 1/3 cup milk or cream (1/3 cup maple syrup) or use half cream and syrup 1 ½ cup powdered sugar 1 tsp. lemon juice ½ tsp. or more to taste, maple flavoring (1/4 tsp.)

If desired toast the nuts. (I did not but recipe calls to toast nuts). Whisk flour, salt and baking powder together and set aside. Brown butter in saucepan about ten minutes, stirring so as not to burn.

Immediately whisk in brown sugar and maple syrup and allow to cool for about 5 minutes. Now whisk the eggs (one at a time into butter mix adding the flavorings along with the eggs. Fold in nuts into flour and the mix in the butter and eggs. Spread into prepared pan and bake about 25 minutes until lightly browned and toothpick come out clean. Place on rack and frost when cooled. (This freezes great at this stage) Make frosting: Beat butter (if using unsalted remember the salt) until fluffy then add liquid and beat until smooth. (I first used only syrup, too sweet. Would use mixture of cream and syrup) Gradually add sugar on low speed until all is incorporated.

Beat till fluffy. Add flavorings, increase maple flavoring a little at a time for taste.

My dog, Sunshine has been so bored as we have not walked in this weather. She has not touched any of the dolls or the tree but sure has given them all a good sniffing.

“Baby, It’s Cold Outside” is the next selection, featuring a vocal duet from Julie and Chuck Varilek, followed by a Latin rhythm version of “Deck The Halls.”

Curtis Fox will next be featured as trombone soloist on “Christmas Time Is Here.” The Jazz Big Band will close their portion of the concert with Mariah Carey’s hit, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” featuring soloist Jan McCown-Ertl.

After a short intermission to reset the stage, Jeff Klintberg will direct the Village Band on “Westminster Carol” and “Away In A Manger.” Klintberg will finish with Claude T. Smith’s rendition of the hymn “God Of Our Fathers.”

Varilek will then direct the band on “Minor Alterations,” a slightly non-traditional take on traditional Christmas carols, followed by “Silent Night” and “An Irving Berlin Christmas. ” For the band’s traditional end-of-concert sing-along, Scott Anderson will lead the audience in singing band member Jerry Brubaker’s arrangement of “The Ultimate Christmas Sing-Along,” includ-

nity each year for the past 37 years.

The Jazz Big Band has been performing free concerts in the Estes Park community each year for the past 27 years.

The Estes Park Village Band and Jazz Big Band are community bands made up of adult and school age musicians from the Estes Park area as well as from surrounding communities. New members are always welcome to perform with the bands.

Tiny Tots & Santa At The Legion Dec. 14

THE PORTRAIT Years ago, a very wealthy man shared a passion for art collecting with his devoted young son. Together they travelled the world, adding only the finest treasures to their collection. They collected priceless works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and other works by the art world’s best, The widowed father looked on with satisfaction as his only son became an experienced art collector. The son’s trained eye and sharp business mind caused the father great pride – as they dealt with art collectors around the world.

In 1914, as winter approached, the nation became engulfed in war and the young man was called up to serve his country. After a few short months, his father received the telegram that is dreaded by every soldier’s loved ones. His beloved son had been killed in action. The old man faced the upcoming Christmas holidays with anguish and sadness. The joy of the Christmas season – that he and his son had so looked forward to – was gone. On Christmas morning, there was a knock on the door. As the old man opened the door, he was greeted by a young soldier with a large package in his hand on leave from the Western front. He introduced himself to the man by saying, “I was a friend of your son. He was rescuing me when he died. I have something to show you.”

As the two began to talk, the soldier told the old man how his son often talked about his father and their love of art. “I’m an artist,” the soldier said, “and I would like to give you this.” As the old man unwrapped the package, he saw that it was a portrait of his son. Though the world would never consider it the work of a genius, the painting showed the face of the old man’s son in detail. There was no mistaking who was depicted there. Overcome with emotion, the father hung the portrait of his son over the fireplace, moving aside millions of dollars worth of art to make space for it. The old man then sat in his chair and spent Christmas gazing at the gift he had been given. The painting of his son was now his most prized possession, far eclipsing any of the pieces of art that museums around the word were clamoring for.

Ten years later, the old man died and the art world waited with anticipation for the upcoming auction. According to the old man’s will, all of the art works had to be auctioned on Christmas Day – the day on which he had received his greatest gift – the portrait of his son. The day soon arrived and art collectors from around the world gathered to bid on some of the world’s most spectacular paintings. The auction, however, began with a painting that was not on anyone’s list…the painting of the old man’s son by the young soldier.

The auctioneer asked for an opening bid, but the room remained silent.

“Who will open the bidding with $200.00?” No one spoke. Finally, someone said, “Who cares about that painting? Let’s move on to the good stuff!” The auctioneer said, “No, we have to sell this one first. Now, who will bid on this one?” A neighbor spoke up. “I knew and liked the boy but I can only come up with half that. I’ll bid that.

It would mean a lot to me.” “Going once, going twice…gone.” The gavel fell. The auctioneer announced that the auction was over. Everyone was stunned. “What do you mean? There’s millions worth of art in there. We didn’t come to bid on the picture of the old man’s son.” The auctioneer explained: “It’s very simple, according to the father, whoever honored the son, gets it all.”

That’s the message of Christmas. Whoever honors the Son, gets it all.

Tiny Tots will be able to share their wish list with Santa directed by Auxiliary and Newcomer Elves, receive a

Susan Signs 261 Big Horn Drive Susan moved to Estes Park from the Steamboat area in 1991. Her family has lived in Colorado since the 1860s. She moved here to be with her late husband Ron Weakland and the two enjoyed nine years together in Estes Park.

Susan is the co-owner of Estes Park Rent-All and she loves getting to know her customers and help them with their projects and parties.

She rebuilt her home in 2007-2008 with Legacy Log Homes who built her log cabin to take advantage of the views of the beautiful mountain range.

There are spectacular views from all windows. She spends a good deal of her time watching the mountains change with each season. Her favorite things about her home are the open areas with the views and she’s close to downtown.

Susan’s home is 4,000 square feet with four bedrooms and three baths with large open living areas and in-floor heating. She has a large kitchen with stainless appliances and a large dining room where she can entertain. The home is decorated with Native American items and wall hangings along with some Southwest decor. It also features some beautiful Navajo rugs from her grandparents, as well as some newer rugs she purchased in New Mexico.

While her home was being built, she traveled to Bali with a large suitcase and was able to bring back a few treasures from her trip. Upon entering the home, there is a scary mask which Susan said is to scare away evil spirits. She said, “Most adults miss it, but children always see it. I’ve had much happiness in this home, so it must be working!

Susan loves family time at her comfortable home and she enjoys hosting family and friends for the holidays with great fun and food. Her home has been on short term rental for the past two years, during the summer months.

Susan’s fishing Santas you’ll see throughout the home are very special to her as they belonged to her late husband and were gifts from his mother. She has an eclectic mix of homemade, grandparent and dime store holiday ornaments. She puts up whatever suits her at the time.

Cheryl & Rick Grigsby 260 East Riverside Drive

The Grigsbys fell to the spell of the Rockies while hiking and exploring the Estes region. They began to feel more at home in Estes Park than anywhere else and moved here in 1997. Rick and Cheryl bought their traveler cabins in 2010. The three unique structures had lost all hope of best days, nearing their razing date with a bulldozer.

Rick had a vision of total restoration that would redeem these historic treasures and put them back into productive service. The Grigsbys named their project “This Mountain Life.”

Early Estes Park pioneer, first permanent merchant, and postmaster John T. Cleave acquired the property from Lord Dunraven in 1888. The original structures were built in stages. Redemption Cabin, a log cabin built in 1914 by Fred Payne Clatworthy, was constructed before Rocky Mountain National Park was established. These were the days of Enos Mills, F.O. Stanley, and John Burroughs. Redemption was fully restored by the Grigsbys 100 years later. Exploration Cabin, circa 1928, is also a beautiful example of early Estes Park. The space reflects the same rugged frontier spirit that inspires many, like the real-life explorer whose portrait greets you as you enter the front door. The cabin's old-growth, hand-crafted woods and old Estes decor reflect the virtues of the grizzled old miner: head, heart, health and a drive to always explore. Reflection Cabin, circa 1936, is a one room cabin with restoration nearing completion as a cozy, intimate space inspired by a writer’s nook, hiker’s hostel, or a retreat for those looking for a simple existence and environmental awareness.

Christmas trimmings and other decor in this rustic mountain getaway were selected to bring the warmth of Christmas spirit while underscoring the charm and history of these cabins. Homey, lived-in, comfortable and inviting. Cabintique has joined This Mountain Life in curating unique decorations that mix old and new for a festive, vintage Estes atmosphere.

Wildlife are frequent visitors to This Mountain Life cabins. Cabin guests report seeing bears peeking at them through Exploration Cabin’s roof window. Reflection Cabin was made famous this summer when national news media picked up the local story “Elk on a Roof.” It seems this was the perfect spot to get the choicest leaves from the aspen trees. The position of the cabins right against Little Prospect Mountain invites wildlife to walk right off the mountain onto the cabin’s roofs.

Senior visitors who knew the cabins when they were younger often stop by. They help compete the historical account with memories and stories such as one of the town butcher who lived in Exploration Cabin and used the root cellar, which still exists today.

The renovation of Redemption, Exploration, and Reflection Cabins was a labor of love in which the Grigsbys sought to protect historic charm in this storybook setting.

At every instance, they endeavored to preserve original materials and use repurposed materials from the area. All the cabins have original flooring, some original walls, and reclaimed lumber. Area materials include preserved flooring from beneath the Park Theatre Mall after the fire, lumber from wooden bridges being replaced after the 2013 flood, and artifacts unearthed on the property that speak of fascinating lives lived in time past.

Thirty five years after discovering the Estes Region, Rick and Cheryl have their own store of memories raising their children, hiking, and exploring the trails with their family here. It brings great joy to share that experience with others. They redeemed these cabins with a view to help vacationing family, friends, and out of town guests create their own memories and reflections.

Dana and Lisa lived in Loveland for ten years but spent a lot of time in Estes Park. They moved here when Dana retired and have lived here since 2018.

The home was built in 1923 by a Texas doctor with five children. It is a wood structure and was part of the first neighborhood built in Estes Park. It has views of the golf course and the mountains. Their 2,800 square foot home has a cabin feel with a stone fireplace. It has five bedrooms, and includes a parlor and a rec room. Lisa and Dana are empty-nesters and enjoy having plenty of room for kids and grandkids when they visit.

The Kammersgards have a sizeable rock collection and 1920 era antiques, including a glass insulator collection with custom made insulator lights. They have collectible Studio 56 and other, home villages. They have collected ornaments and decorations with sentimental value over decades of time. Some rooms are decorated by color and others by theme.

They enjoy regular visits from wildlife including elk, deer, turkey, eagles, owls and the occasional bear and mountain lions passing through.

They love their beautiful home and beautiful setting and celebrate every day they are lucky enough to live there.

Susan & Dave Cordes 1000 Black Canyon Drive

David and Susan spent their honeymoon in Estes in 1983. Since then, they’ve regularly vacationed here, bringing their two girls and either camping or staying in cabins while hiking and enjoying the area. They bought this house in 2016, selecting it for its proximity to town itself and its spectacular mountain views and moved here permanently in spring of 2018.

The house was built in 1988, designed by the architect Jackson Brooks.

The house is a one-story, ranch-style home with an emphasis on casual living and mountain views.

The home was completely remodeled this past year by Nathan Kinley/Kinley Built, and has been described by a neighbor as “Southern Living in the mountains.” The 3,000 square foot house has three bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, a sunroom, den, study, and great room with vaulted ceilings.

Susan said, “The house works well for us and company (family and friends visiting the area). Between RMNP and the many activities in Estes itself, we have a constant stream of visitors wanting to experience all the area has to offer.”

Home furnishings include several pieces of antique furniture that have been in the family for many years. The art work includes a number of pieces done by Susan (BA in fine arts from Purdue), as well as numerous Southwest paintings.

Christmas is Susan’s favorite time of year for decorating. Over the years, they’ve accumulated a relatively large collection of Department 56 houses and items that are displayed in a number of groupings scattered around the house. Their two girls always insisted on a live Christmas tree, so picking out the right tree always takes a lot of time.

The house sits on a little over 2.5 acres, so they’ve always got animals in the area. They can never predict when something will be wandering through the yard, they see them at all times of day and night.

Cari grew up in Estes Park and graduated from EPHS but then moved out of the area. Cari and Jason moved back to Estes Park two and a half years ago to become shared owners of Docter Construction along with Cari’s parents, Jim and Eunice Docter.

Their home is a cabin that was built in 1943 which has been added onto over the years. After purchasing it, they completely gutted the entire interior, down to the studs. The home didn’t have any insulation in the walls and some of the studs had fire damage. The cabin had little to no foundation support so they did an entirely new layout, added a laundry room, moved the front entry, and added foundation support. They also added new windows, electric, insulation, plumbing and a new roof. The cabin is nestled in the trees but they do have some nice views, and not a lot of wind. Cari and Jason took a little cabin with very little personality and put a bit of a modern touch to it. The only thing that is original to their home is the stone fireplace and some siding. They kept the stone fireplace from 1943 but someone before them had added a gas insert, so they kept that in. It took them eight months and a lot of late nights and weekends during a very cold winter to rebuild and remodel. They were extremely happy to move in during the spring of 2018.

Their design personality is not very “mountainy” by their description, and they went with more a modern approach with taupes, white and aqua colors.

Cari loves her aqua painted five panel doors. This 870 square foot home has two bedrooms and one bath. They relocated the kitchen so they now have a nice sized kitchen with granite and subway tile. They also added storage wherever they could, and have utilized every square inch of their little home.

The one thing that adds to the size of their home is a deck. It really expands the space for entertaining and for everyday use. They went with a synthetic decking and a metal railing for very little maintenance.

Cari loves to decorate for Christmas and has three different themes that she chooses from. She is excited to decorate this year and said, “It’s very shiny!”

The couple enjoys watching a variety of wildlife from their cozy home.

First Friday Art Groove At The Art Center The Art Center’s ”Winter Light” is on display and the public has an opportunity during First Friday to sign up to win one of two door prizes offered for this event. Bonnie Bowne’s oil painting “Spring Lamb” and Susan Anderson’s stoneware “Winter Spirit” were donated. You do not have to be present to win.

The drawing is made at the conclusion of First Friday and the winner notified.

Estes Valley Chamber Singers Under The Direction Of J. Richard Dixon Present G.F. Handel’s Messiah

It is April 13th 1742 and the world is about to witness the premier of a new work by Georg Frideric Handel. What a strange journey for a German born composer famous for writing Italian operas, and a resident of London since 1710.

The success of Messiah is unquestioned, for here we are 277 years later and this work is more popular than during Handel’s own time. He could have never envisioned such success. He also could have never envisioned the drastic transformations the work has experienced over these last 277 years to the point of being unrecognizable; from 20 singer to over 200 and from 10 instruments to a full “Romantic” orchestra of over 100.

Handel’s original concept was an intimate story telling of the life of Christ. It was written for a small choir—around 20—and a very small ensemble of five strings, two oboes, and harpsichord, with two trumpets and timpani which performed on just three movements.

He had only two soloists from within the choir to cover all the solo work. As he conceived the work, his opera background was not left at the door. The piece can be seen as an opera without movement and costumes. There are scenes and the story unfolds from the foretelling of Christ’s coming to the triumphal ascension to heaven.

The Estes Valley Chamber Singers will be presenting 30 of the 53 movements.

They will be performing the most familiar pieces from the three movements; “Prophecy and Promise of the Redeeming Messiah,” “The Suffering Lamb who Redeems,” and “Thanksgiving for the Defeat of Death.” As with the first performance, the Singers and their Artistic Director and Conductor Rich Dixon, are, as close as possible, presenting Messiah as Handel intended; 17 singers and five strings and two oboes. Because of the demands on instrumentalist in Estes—Village Band and the Oratorio Society performances, all with in a week of this concert—Rich has decided to not include the trumpets and timpani in this performance. Sorry, no “The Trumpet Shall sound.”

Come to the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies on Saturday, December 14th or Sunday, December 15th at 2:00 p.m. and hear a wonderful musical work that has not been heard in Estes for nearly ten years. Congratulations to Esa Burkhardt, the Estes Park High School Student of the Week for December 5, 2019.

At Estes Park High School, Esa enjoys being on the volleyball team (three years, captain of the team, two years) and she has earned her varsity letter for this sport. She is President of the Interact Club and been a member for four years, she is in the Environmental Club (three years), National Honor Society (two years) and Youth in Action (two years). She has lettered in academics all three years and has been on the Honor Roll for four years with a 3.98 GPA. Outside of school she enjoys watching “The Office,” spending time with friends and working out.

Crossroads Reminds Us Colorado Gives Day Is Tuesday, December 10th Crossroad’s Executive Director, Brian Schaffer, invites everyone in the Estes Valley to participate in Colorado Gives Day on Tuesday, December 10th. “For the last 37 years Crossroads Ministry has been actively involved in caring for people after disasters, emergencies, and seasons of great need. There’s no need for our local government to fund a public assistance office because Crossroads has stepped up to fill this role. When compared to a typical public assistance office funded by tax payers and operated by a government agency, Crossroads offers similar resources, but the big difference is how we are staffed with volunteers who love their neighbors through demonstrable acts of compassion. Our hope is that everyone will experience a big dose of kindness, gentleness, joyfulness, and a peaceful feeling as neighbors are finding help for whatever is going on in their life. For some it could be a temporary fix whereas for others it may be on-going support, but no matter what it is we’re committed to stand beside people in our community. We believe no one should go hungry in our town, so we maintain a fully-stocked food pantry to be able to offer food as a first response in

meeting needs. However, what we’ve discovered is that people are hungry for more than just food to feed the body, but a desire to live within a loving community where they can have healthy and meaningful relationships. I think we’re doing a great job of building relationships of trust that allow our volunteers to interact with our clients in a way that no other agency can come close to providing. We believe unconditional love is transformative and can change lives from the inside out. For us to continue doing what we do best we need people to help us fund the services that cost money. Time and talents can take us quite a ways in meeting needs, but it’s the treasures that are needed to pay rent, purchase food, and sustain a building where a majority of our work takes place. Exciting Sustainability Initiatives In Estes Park Lists of important actions for promoting sustainability and combating climate change always include eliminating food waste, recycling, and reusing or repurposing. Locally, there are a number of proven, novel, and visionary programs taking place in all of these areas. Everyone is invited to come and hear about them at the next Estes Valley Sierra Club event in the Estes Valley Library’s Hondius Room, from 7-8:30 p.m. on Monday evening, December 9th.

The Estes Park High School Environ-

mental Club has embarked on several exciting initiatives. They have an ambitious recycling program as well as a new food composting project for the high school cafeteria, both of which may expand to other schools or the community.

For the latter purpose, they have acquired two bear-proof 1,000-gallon Green Mountain Technologies "Earth Tubs" from the city of Fort Collins.

Another very intriguing proposal under development at the high school in-

volves the repurposing of plastic waste (primarily from water bottles) into 3D printer filament and 3D printed consumer goods, thus creating a local endmarket for plastics. This is vitally important because, not only does plastic waste clog our landfills and our waterways, but microscopic plastic fibers are being found at alarmingly high levels in the lakes, streams, soil, and air of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Two students from the Environmental Club will describe their activities as Zero-Waste interns, supporting the school’s composting and recycling programs. In addition, the Estes Park High School Closed-Loop Plastic Waste Diversion Project will be examined, and a representative from the Community Recycling Committee’s Food Waste Initiative subcommittee will lead a discussion of why and how to reduce food waste in the Estes Valley.

The concert opens with Three German Dances by Mozart. They were written in 1791 when he served as Imperial Chamber Composer in Vienna, Austria. His primary obligation was to compose dances to be played at court dances and balls in the Imperial Palace. "Listen for the sleigh bells in the third movement.

They're like bright dances -- happy music," says Robert C. Howard, the musical director and conductor of the Oratorio Society.

Howard will conduct the Colorado debut of his own composition Radiance of the Light. "It's a really a desire to tell the Christmas story with a sense of being there as first-hand witnesses to the events leading to the nativity," explains Howard. "It brings many things together.

It's for full chorus, orchestra, and soloists."

Also on the program is a holiday season favorite -- Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride.

He got the idea for his popular Christmas tune during the heat wave of 1946.

He didn't finish writing it until the cold of February in 1948. The orchestral version was first recorded by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1949.

In 1950, Mitchell Parish added words to the music and it became a hit record on RCA and a standard for many Christmas concerts.

Another holiday standard is the Little Drummer Boy, or a variation on that for this concert -- Carol of the Drum. It's a Rich Dixon arrangement where the

drum beat is akin to Ravel's Bolero.

Star Carol and Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind are two pieces by famed British composer John Rutter. His compositions are largely for choral groups and religious in tone. He told the CBS program 60 Minutes he's not a particularly religious man, but he is inspired by scripture and sacred verses and prayers.

Howard says Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind is "a piece for strings, harp, harpsichord, and chorus. It's really a very unusual piece. You get a feeling of the chill of the wind in the music itself."

Rutter's works are performed by choruses and orchestras around the world and are particularly popular during the Christmas season.

Bogoroditse Devo (Rejoice, O Virgin)

by Sergei Rachmaninov is a beautiful a cappella hymn written in 1915 in Moscow. It is part of the Russian Orthodox All Night Vigil ceremony. Rachmaninov began playing piano at the age of four and immigrated to the U. S. with his family in 1918 settling first in New York City and later in Beverly Hills, California. Rachmaninov considered Bogoroditse Devo one of his two favorite compositions.

The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy will be Jamaican in style. It's an arrangement

by Mack Wilberg, one of the directors of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The soloists also will be playing instruments as they sing.

Howard turned back the clock in picking the arrangement he wanted for O Holy Night. "I decided to go back to what at the time was the most famous

Howard says, "One of the beautiful things about community orchestras is that people come to sing and play from all walks of life. And they're bound together by the love of music. They come together to celebrate their love of the art."

It promises to be what Howard calls "joyous music for the holidays." And the audience will have an opportunity to join in that joyous music as we do some caroling.

In 2019, the EPCC applied for and obtained a Youth-in-Action grant to install a Bike Park Repair Station at the newly constructed Bike Park at Stanley Park.

The Repair Station is now installed and in use. This summer, EPCC hosted a Bike Park Work-Weekend that included Todd Plummer demonstrates how to trail maintenance, bagging weeds, and make a smoothie with the Bike Blender at general cleanup.

In June, the EPCC hosted its annual Valley Open Space and Outdoor RecreBike Estes Day which includes Bike to ation Plan steering committee. Cub Scouts Finish Another Successful Popcorn Fundraiser The annual Cub Scout popcorn fundraiser has once again come to an end. In August, the local Pack 8 Cub Scouts began knocking on doors, setting up booths and opening their online sales pages to begin raising money to fund their Pack. 73% of all popcorn sales stay local with a portion staying directly with Pack 8, and the remainder going to district and councils levels, funding the upkeep of camps and scouting activities.

The Cub Scouts began the season with an enormous sales goal of $30,000. A number that would exceed any number they had ever sold. All of the boys worked incredibly hard, pulling out all the stops and the pack is proud to announce that they smashed their goal and sold $37,194! This total was impressive

enough to land the Pack as a Top 5 Unit in the Longs Peak Council up against dozens of other Packs and Troops.

Cole Ingram, a Webelos Scout, also placed top 6 in Council for an impressive individual sale of $7,717!

Beyond teaching the Cub Scouts financial responsibility, there are many other positive lessons that the Scouts learn throughout the

Fundraiser. Popcorn sales are designed to teach salesmanship, communication skills, and budgeting. This sale also helps shape a Scout’s future through higher education. This year six Cub Scouts sold over $2,500 to qualify for a College Scholarship that will continue to grow throughout their years in Scouting. This years scholarship qualifiers and their sales are: Isaac Schultz $2,502, Archer Chew $2,623, Tristian Niemeyer $2,820, Tavin McGill $3,040, Blake Ingram $5,621, and Cole Ingram $7,717.

They began collecting products for the Estes Park Police Department and the Estes Valley Fire Protection District as a way to say â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thank Youâ&#x20AC;? to them for their hard work protecting our community. The Pack welcomed Fire Chief David Wolf, and Estes Police Chief Wes Kufeld to accept their donations. Both entities often assist Cub Scouts in completing required adventures and the Pack sincerely appreciates their support and assistance.

The Pack would like to extend a big thank you to everyone involved in helping them reach their goal. This includes parents, leaders, committee members, Estes Park Safeway, the Country Supermarket, Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highlands Festival, Estes Park Lumber Company, The Slab, and all of the customers who purchased and enjoyed these products.

“When Cultures Meet”: All-Day Workshop On December 12 “When Cultures Meet” is an insightprovoking workshop designed to help participants navigate the challenges and maximize the opportunities when two or more cultures meet. The format is designed to allow participants to learn to leverage the unique capabilities and contributions of all an organization’s members.

The one-time all-day workshop is being offered in Estes Park on Thursday, December 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The session was originally part of October’s Conflict Resolution Month, but had to be re-scheduled due to snow. The free program is co-sponsored by the Estes Valley Library and the Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership.

Thursday’s session begins with a question: “How can we work together to build a robust community in the midst of so many different agendas?” Different

cultures can be found within organizations, communities, and society. Without awareness or understanding of these differences, they can lead to negative conflicts.

The workshop will be led by Susan Stewart, a regional instructor for the national organization, Power + Systems.

Stewart will facilitate an upbeat session to help participants discover how to decrease interpersonal tension, appreciate diverse perspectives, strengthen interactions, and create organizations where commonalities and differences are valued.

The day will include a one-hour “on your own” break for lunch.

The workshop takes place upstairs in the Estes Park Town Hall’s Rooms 201203. Advance registration is required, and may be done by visiting estesvalleylibrary.org.

Longtime Estes Park resident Ron Duell died at home Wednesday evening, November 27, 2019, surrounded by his family who were by his side throughout two months of illness brought on by leukemia.

Ronald Axel Duell was born October 26, 1933, in Eaton, CO. His parents were Edward and Anna (Norlander) Duell. After graduating from high school, Ron farmed with his family east of Eaton, LaSalle, and Greeley. He later joined the United States Army, serving in Japan during the Korean War. He returned to farming following his military service and on November 9, 1958, he married Marcia Lane in Colorado Springs, CO. In 1965 the couple moved to Estes Park where they raised their family of three children and enriched the community with their tireless commitment to serving those around them. Their church home was the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, where Ron was a member and elder.

Ron’s first position in Estes Park was as a heavy equipment operator for Eastwood & Gavell. One of his signature achievements with the company was construction of the road to the top of Prospect Mountain. During the devastating flood of 1976 he worked throughout the night clearing roads and assisting first responders, and in clean-up and rebuilding efforts for weeks and months following. In 1979, he began a 23-year career with the Upper Thompson Sanitation District, retiring in 2002 as District Manager. After the 1982 Lawn Lake flood he worked seven days a week throughout the summer restoring sanitation and utility service to the Fall River Road homes and businesses. Ron served as a Director with the UTSD Board for ten

years after his retirement. The Colorado State Special Districts Association honored Ron with the Distinguished Manager’s Award in 2000 and the Years of Dedicated Service award in September 2019.

Ron was a volunteer Fireman with the Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department for seventeen years. He was a Boy Scout leader and accompanied the boys on many hikes and campouts, supplying Marcia’s delicious (and hot!) chili to the boys on their annual Christmas treecut campouts. He also helped establish the Charles Heights Homeowners Association, and over time became widely regarded as the unofficial caretaker for the Charles Heights neighborhood.

Ron is survived by Marcia, his wife of 61 years, sons Ronald Duell (fiancée Deborah Holmes) of Estes Park and Shawn Duell (Cynthia) of Tucson, AZ, daughter Lisa Schmidt (Alan) of Houston, TX, thirteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Edna Johnson and Betty McQueen, and brother Lloyd Duell.

Ron’s family is deeply grateful for the prayers, support, and assistance lovingly provided by so many friends and associates over the last three months.

A memorial service will celebrate Ron’s life on Monday, December 9, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Avenue, Estes Park. Sherry Lou Mowery Sherry Lou (Young, Johnson) Mowery passed away peacefully November 19, 2019 surrounded by her family at her home at Fort Collins Good Samaritan Village.

Sherry was born May 8, 1936 in Greeley, CO where she spent much of her childhood. She graduated from CSU in 1960 with a degree in Occupational Therapy.

Sherry married George Mowery June 23, 1962 in Denver, CO. Longing for a quieter life, they moved with their two children, son Scott and daughter Kim, to Estes Park, CO in 1968.

Over their 39 years in Estes, Sherry and George ran multiple businesses including her own real estate agency.

Sherry was involved in numerous local clubs, groups, and organizations, where her leadership skills were appreciated and utilized.

Sherry cultivated lifelong friendships through her many interests, including cooking and collecting cookbooks, travel, bridge, bowling, and golf. But her main interest was devoting herself to her family.

Sherry and George retired to Loveland, CO in 2007 with the desire of spending time with their beloved granddaughter Sophie.

Sherry was predeceased by Dorothy Young (mother), Rindy Lee Young (sister), Gus Johnson (father), Fred and Edna Walling (grandparents).

She is survived by her loving husband George Mowery, their daughter Kim Mowery Smith, their son Scott Mowery and his wife Mereth, their granddaughter Sophia Smith, Lyn Asbury (sister) and her husband Mark and their children Kip and Kerri, Jay T Young (brother) and his wife Joann and their daughter Jodie Ann, and other extended family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at the Good Samaritan Society 508 West Trilby Rd., Fort Collins, CO on Saturday, 12/7/2019 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel with a small reception to follow. Sherry will arrive at her final resting place in the Estes Valley Memorial Gardens in Spring 2020.

Daryl W. Lemon Daryl W. Lemon, 90, of Estes Park, CO passed on to his next journey 11/30/2019.

Born 11/24/29, he grew up in Aledo, Illinois where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Davenport. They married October 25, 1947 and recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. They raised a family in Edgington, Illinois where Daryl became a master at carpentry and wood working. His remodeling and home building skills were legendary.

He and Dorothy relocated to Colorado in 1980 where Daryl built his home in Estes Park. They enjoyed watching wildlife, including deer, elk,

bobcats and bears from their front deck.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Davenport) Lemon – Estes Park, CO; his children Jeanine Nyman (Bob Blind)-Centennial, CO, Dallas Lemon (Phyllis Dunlap)-Englewood, CO, Dennis Lemon-Longmont, CO, and Shari Lemon-Colorado Springs, CO; his six grandchildren Trevor, Heather, Trina, Joshua, David, and Jeffrey; and 10 great grandchildren. Martin Elliott Denning September 16th, 1986-October 29th 2019 Martin Elliottt Denning, aged 33, has passed away in Bend, Oregon. Martin was born in Sandpoint, Idaho on September 16, 1986. He was a talented artist and enjoyed being outdoors and climbing. He graduated from Estes Park High School in 2005 and worked at the Estes Park Public Library. He was

a resident of Bend, Oregon, where he worked at the local community college and pursued his art work, including painting and pottery. Martin enjoyed climbing and hiking in Bend.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie Burke Denning of Estes Park. He's survived by his mother, Eva Denning, from Brno, in the Czech Republic.

Jennifer Ford Paustenbaugh Jennifer Ford Paustenbaugh died on November 23, 2019, in Spanish Fork, Utah following a more than eight year battle with breast cancer. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 4, 1962, to Elaine and Jonathan Ford.

She was a loving, wife, mother and grandmother. She loved traveling, and had visited all 50 states and more than 35 countries. Jennifer had a lifelong enthusiasm for learning about other people and cultures; she was fluent in five different languages, including Russian, Spanish, French and Bulgarian. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed discussing books with many members of her family and close friends. She was a member of several book groups, and was seemingly always reading multiple books at once.

Jennifer was also active in Girl Scouts, serving as a local leader and President of Stillwater’s Morning Rotary Group; she was a Paul Harris Fellow.

After completing her K-12 schooling in Maryland, she earned four degrees at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; her B. A. in Political Science with a Certificate in Russian Area Studies in 1983, her M. L.S in 1986, her M. A. in East European Area Studies in 1993, and her Ph. D. in Information Science in 1999. In 1985 she met the love of her life, Richard Paustenbaugh, and they were married in 1986.

Jennifer began her career in academic libraries at Indiana University where she became the assistant to the Dean of Libraries and began her long interest in assessment and fundraising. In 1990 they moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where they lived and worked for more than 20 years and raised their two children, Erik and Kirsten.

From 1990 to 1995, Jennifer served as Head of the Patent and Trademark Library at Oklahoma State University.

In 1995 she began a new role as the Director of Library Development. In 2000 she was appointed as the Puterbaugh Foundation Professor of Library Service and Head of Special Collections and University Archives and held a concurrent appointment as the Executive Director of the Women's Archives until 2013. In 2005 she was appointed as the Associate Dean of Libraries for Planning and Assessment, a position which she held until 2013.

Jennifer also served the University in a variety of roles including twice chairing their Title IX Compliance Chair for their 10 year review from the NCAA. In 2013 she was appointed as the University Librarian of the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, a position she held until her death.

She wrote numerous professional ar-

ticles and in 2005 she co-authored with Dr. Robert Darcy the book, The Oklahoma Women's Almanac. She was actively involved in the work of a variety of professional organizations in her field. She led numerous committees and task forces for the American Library Association over her years of involvement within its ranks. She was also heavily involved with the Association of Research Libraries serving in a variety of capacities including as a member of their board of directors. Her contributions within The Great Western Library Alliance, were also recognized as she was invited to lead several committees and was eventually elected to their board of directors and then elected as their chair in 2018. Throughout her career she was passionate about helping women and in 2003 was appointed by Governor Brad Henry to serve on the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women.

She served as the Commission Chair for 2006-2007. In 2015 she was inducted into the Brigham Young University Chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served diligently in a variety of callings at the Ward and Stake level.

Upon completion of her undergraduate studies in 1983 she served an 18 month church mission in both Quito, Ecuador and San Jose, California. She always enjoyed working with the children and youth of the Church.

Jennifer is survived by her husband, Rich, of 33 years, her son, Erik, his wife Kelsey, and their son Weston, and her daughter, Kirsten; her father, Jonathan; her brother Jonathan Jr, his wife Dawn and their children Brittany and Jonathan William and his wife Catherine and their son Samuel; and, her sister Susannah Dillender and her husband Michael and their children Michael and Mary Ruth; She was preceded in death by her mother Elaine Thompson Ford.

Her funeral service was held December 2, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Canyon Ridge Stake Center, 1911 E. 1850 S, Spanish Fork, UT. Interment followed at the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
