Strategic Planning To Focus Our Efforts On What The Community Needs Most Town Government has many responsibilities and roles in a community. It’s easy to lose focus and try to be all things to all people. Add to this the fact that we have limited resources and staff to get things accomplished. In order to focus our efforts on what the community needs most, the Town Board has a strategic planning process to set priorities and goals for your Town government. The Board sets goals and objectives in its Strategic Plan on an annual basis. These goals and objectives are based on community needs as they understand them, and from information we receive from citizens and staff. The plan is fluid and adaptable -- it can change as community needs change over time.

The Strategic Plan is divided into eight key outcome areas: • Robust Economy • Infrastructure • Exceptional Guest Services • Public Safety, Health and Environment • Governmental Services and Internal Support • Transportation • Town Financial Health • Outstanding Community Services It’s important that the Town Board and staff monitor how we are progressing on the strategic outcomes, goals and objectives on a regular basis. Recently the Town Board met to review the accomplishments on their strategic plan for 2017. Many of the Town’s strategic goals are ongoing and may

take several years to accomplish, but it is rewarding when you can check things off the list. This month I'm reporting to you some of the key items we completed in 2017.

This year the Town developed a Capital Improvement Program that will help prioritize infrastructure needs and projects moving forward. The Board began reviewing a Stormwater Master Plan, along with options for implementing that plan. This year the Town and partners completed flood repairs to Fish Creek Road and Fish Creek Trail. The significant improvements to MacGregor Avenue and the utilities in that area were completed. Working with a grant from the State, the Town completed a detailed engineering design of a broadband network for the Light and Power Service area, giving the Town Board and the community the final piece of information needed to make a future decision on how best to improve broadband services to the area. Probably the biggest project completed this year was the Visitor Center Parking Structure, completed and opened in time for the busy 4th of July weekend.

Internal projects completed this year include updating of Town financial policies and starting installation of a modern document management system for town documents and records. The security cameras in Town facilities have been upgraded and replaced to improve the safety and security of everyone using our facilities.

Staff worked on building the foundation for future projects as well, including

investigating what it would take to provide shuttle services year-round, and pursued several grant sources for completion of the Fall River Trail. Although we just fell under the line for funding of the trail in the highly competitive GOCO grant cycle, we are in a good position to pursue these funds again next year.

The Town Board implemented several code changes aimed at encouraging workforce and attainable housing, as well as simplifying Town codes, while still protecting the character of the community. These include density incentives for workforce and affordable housing and increasing height limitations for multi-family developments to allow for three stories. The Downtown Plan will provide a blueprint for moving forward with any future redevelopment and improvements in the core downtown area, including a parking management plan.

In 2017, the Board identified a need to provide more support for working families in Estes Park, and through a strategic objective, it formed the Family Advisory Board. This board will help the Town to be more responsive to the needs of families in our community.

Some of these projects will take multiple years to complete and are carried forward in the Board's 2018 Strategic Plan. For 2018 the Town Board has updated and revised their strategic goals and objectives and adopted a budget for next year to help make the 2018 Strategic Plan as successful as the 2017 plan.

Estes Park Christmas Bird Count To Be Held January 3rd, 2018 The 65th annual Rocky Mountain National Park Christmas Bird Count; sponsored by the National Audubon Society, will be held Wednesday the 3rd of January. Everyone interested in attending the count, please meet at the RMNP Visitor Center at 8:00 a.m. on the 3rd. We will be counting all of the birds in a 15 mile circle centered in the middle of Estes Park.

The circle covers a large part of RMNP, all of Estes Park, and a large area down Hwy. 34, Hwy. 36 and Hwy. 7.

Participants will be driving and/or walking in small groups, as they move about the circle counting all the birds they see; trying not to count the same bird twice.

Everyone is welcome to participate, regardless of birding ability. Those with less birding skills will be paired with a more accomplished birder(s).

The count actually encompasses an entire week, so you can count any rare or unusual birds three days prior or after

the count day. In other words, if you see something unusual at your feeders or while you’re out and about, it can be counted even if it does not appear the day of the count.

Some of the birds that should be seen include Canada Geese, Mallards, American Robins, Townsend’s Solitaires, white, red and Pygmy Nuthatches, Redtailed Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Bald Eagles, Rosy-finches, House Finches, Steller’s Jays, Gray Jays, Clark’s Nutcrackers, Brown Creepers, Grayheaded Juncos and House Sparrows.

Some less common species that could be seen include Common Redpolls, Evening Grosbeaks, Snow Buntings and Purple Finches.

You Can Help Save Lives!

Donate To Quota Club’s Mission To Get A Lifesaving AED In Every EPPD Vehicle It happens often. A call for medical aid comes in to our dispatch center and someone is suffering cardiac arrest, is not breathing or has collapsed and police are very often first on the scene. We never know who will be the one in need.

It could be yourself, your spouse, your parent, a friend or a special loved one.

Estes Park Police officers are in need of a tool to help them save lives of those we love in those crucial first minutes when the heart stops beating the way it should.

EPPD recently asked Quota Club of Estes Park to help them equip all of the police cars with these lifesaving AEDs. Quota members are eager to help this fund-raising endeavor and this letter went out to potential donors.

Dear Estes Park; We are writing to you on behalf of the Estes Park Quota Club Foundation. As you may know, in past years the Quota Club has raised over hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide ambulances for our community.

We are asking you to assist us in raising funds so that we can put AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in every police vehicle. Currently our officers share two AEDs, that they essentially check out of the office when they go out on a call. What a wonderful thing it would be if every car were equipped with this lifesaving tool.

Having an AED at hand can indeed save lives. An AED is a portable, easy to use device that measures the heartbeat via sticky pads attached to the chest. The AED will deliver a shock via these pads to restart the heart of a person suffering a cardiac arrest. When cardiac arrest oc-

curs, defibrillation is the only means of restarting the heart and preventing death.

When asked the reason why the Estes Park Police Department needs these AED units for their patrol cars, Captain Rick Life stated, “Quite often, members of our police department are first on scene at an emergency call since our officers are always out patrolling the town. Having the ability to start defibrillation before the ambulance even gets there greatly improves the chances of saving lives.” Captain Life added, “All of our officers are trained First Responders. I have personally seen a person whom I thought had no chance of making it, saved by an AED. This person was unresponsive at the initial call and through the help of the AED, was talking to the ambulance crew on their way into the ambulance. It was amazing and a very happy ending to that situation.”

Our goal is to raise $25,000 by the first of the year. We know the importance of a quick and early response when someone is having a sudden cardiac arrest emergency. For every minute without treatment, a victim’s rate of survival decreases by 7% to 10%!

January Nonprofit Lunch & Learn To Focus On Ensuring Legal And Ethical Integrity And Enhancing Organization’s Public Standing The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center is continuing the unique series of roundtable discussions focused on the Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards. The final session in January will explore the role of the board in ensuring legal and ethical integrity and enhancing the organization’s public standing. This roundtable discussion will be held on Thursday, January 11 from Noon – 1:30 p.m. in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library and will be facilitated by Frank Lancaster, Estes Park Town Administrator.

Roundtables are free to all nonprofit leaders in or serving the Estes Valley with a special emphasis on encouraging board member attendance. Registration is required. Please register by visiting www.epnonprofit.org and selecting the January training date on the home page under “News & Events.”

Because the board is ultimately responsible for ensuring adherence to legal standards and ethical norms, its members should collectively exhibit diligence, commitment, and vigilance to keep their house in order. The organization’s repu-

The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies announces auditions for it spring production of Private Lives by Noel Coward, (1899-1973), to be directed by Greig Steiner. The play is one of Coward’s most famous and enduring comedies. It centers around two couples who are honeymooning in France in a resort by the sea.

The couples by chance have suites next to one another with adjoining terraces and Elyot, now married to Sibyl, is enjoying the view when the woman from

the other couple, Amanda comes onto her terrace and he realizes that she is his former wife. When Sibyl and Elyot, having champagne on their terrace, are discovered by Amanda, the fun begins.

There are wonderful scenes for each of the four principal characters; Elyot and Sibyl Chase and Victor and Amanda Prynne, as well as a character part of a

French maid (who speaks only French) of indiscriminate age and considerable comic opportunity. The age of the actors is not critical but the principals should be able to “play” characters between the ages of 25 and 50 or so. The French maid can be of any age up to an active 75. Comedy Works describes Sam Adams in three words: "Smooth. Clever. Hilarious."

In 2001, Sam stepped on stage to perform stand-up comedy for the first time, at age 41. Eight years later he turned to a career in comedy full-time after winning at the Great American Comedy Festival and gaining national attention.

Sam's energetic, comically-insightful act is 100 percent profanity-free and filled with observations about his every-day encounters. He is a headline performer at comedy clubs and corporate events across the country. Sam also has shared stages with national-touring comedians and music recording artists--an eclectic, genrejumping list of nationally-known performers ranging from comedians Frank Caliendo, Craig Ferguson, Kevin Nealon, David Alan Grier and Keenen Ivory Wayans to music's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Heart and seven-time Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau. The Denver Business Journal once gave Sam a favorable review for "bringing down the house with a string of well-delivered lines that were notable for their lack of profanity, scatological or sexual references."

Sam changed careers after aft f er making a ft name for himself as one of Denver's premier sports journalists. In 2003 was voted by his peers as Colorado's “Print Journalist of the Year.” As a reporter and columnist, his work has been featured in The Denver Post, The Charlotte Observer, Rocky Mountain News and Colorado Avid Golfer magazine.

The little community of Glen Haven continues to rebuild four years after the flood of 2013. The Town Hall was completely destroyed and could not be rebuilt on the old site. Another property was purchased just a few hundred feet away from the original, a retaining wall has been constructed and excavation has been completed for the new Town Hall.

I speak from which I know, because just a few days ago I baked a batch of gingersnaps and indeed, did burn one sheet of them. My timer malfunctioned (it could not have been user error, as I know you are considering) so eight minutes came and went, the molasses nibbles continued to bake, and only when I detected a hint of acrid odor wafting under my nose did I confirm that blackened ginger is not a choice aroma when wishing your home to smell of holiday cheer.

Fortunately I was reared to believe that crispy and near-burnt are desirable traits in food. (Leading by example, my mother was quite convincing. Mom enjoys crusty, dark, dark-brown anything—grilled cheese sandwiches, the edges of baked scalloped potatoes and ham, the fluted edge of a pie crust. Along that line, for years she also assured us that wings were her favorite piece from a chicken. Too young to know better, we followed suit, until we got old enough to sit without a booster chair, when we discovered drumsticks and thighs and breasts.

She also got some of us to love the liver, heart and gizzard. Mom was a wizard that way.)

So, being of the eat-it-or-go-hungry ilk, I was quite at home with the taste of overdone gingersnaps. They are tolerable but still, I advise you to take another cookie from the plate if an alternative is offered.

Not to be undone by my overdone gingersnaps, I also baked sugar cookies, which turned out beautifully, and I had help from young hands to paint them with frosting and adorn them with sugars and sprinkles of assorted colors. (“Can you eat these things? ” they asked, eyeing the little silver balls that resemble bb’s. They have a name: dragées—pronounced drah-JHAYs, and yes, you can eat them. Believe me, they did—the ones that didn’t roll off the table and onto the floor, anyway.)

To add to the assortment, I made snickerdoodles, with their unique touch of tang, which comes from the two teaspoons of cream of tartar added to the batter. Many

people love this crackled cinnamon cookie simply because of its nonsense name, which may be a corruption of the German word schneckennudeln, meaning snail dumpling. Or it could be a silly piffle word originating in New England, where whimsical cookie names is a tradition. ~oOo~ My contributions to the cookie collection have been baked, and many of them eaten, but not all. Four days after the big day, the leftovers don’t look half as appealing as they did before the holiday.

That’s the way it is with Christmas. There is so much to do leading up to the day, and often there is a letdown immediately afterward. Yet there doesn’t have to be a postseason anticlimax. We could think of Christmas as the kick-off to the yearlong (lifelong!) season of peace on earth and goodwill to all. Poet Howard Thurman (1899-1981) says it perfectly in his piece, The Work of Christmas: When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flocks, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the captives, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among the people, To make music in the heart.

This is the work I choose, beginning today, as I pack away the ornaments, ribbons, stocking and cookie cutters: to practice the compassion and generosity of Christmas throughout the year. I won’t always succeed but even if I improve just a smidge, the world—and I—will be better for it.

Estes Park Women’s Winter Weekend At Meadow Mountain Ranch I know it’s really hard for women in Estes Park to get away in the summertime to come to camp and play. So, we’re creating a new event to provide you with a wonderful winter experience at Meadow Mountain Ranch, the Girl Scout camp only about 15 minutes away from here near Allenspark.

Here are the details: Dates: February 17 – 18, 2018.

That’s over the Presidents’ Day holiday weekend.

The schedule runs from anytime in the morning on Saturday through about noon on Sunday.

Place: As I mentioned, at Meadow Mountain Ranch.

We’ll have cozy accommodations in the main lodge, where we can have a fire in the fireplace, and enjoy most of the amenities we are used to.

Cost: $60.00 for the overnight event. 3 meals, site fees, and program costs are included.

Meals: Lunch and dinner on Saturday and a fancy brunch on Sunday. We have a great food service gal who will be sure to tickle our palates as well as accommodate any dietary special needs.

So here’s what it’s all about. This is the first time for this event, and the sky is the

limit. If you want to kick back and relax, we’ll have a cozy reading corner, or a place to do puzzles, games or crafts, or a group can get together for knitting, chatting and such. However, if you are up for more outside winter adventures, we can go hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or even build a snow cave.

Read our Virtual E-Edition at www.epnews.com ‘NO LITTLE PEOPLE, NO LITTLE PLACES’ That is the name of a powerful book by Francis Shaeffer. His church work is done in a distant land that boasts a much smaller population than many places. Due to his widespread popularity as an author, he had been chided by some as wasting his time in that land, rather than serving in a highly populated place. In his book he makes the very good point that it is not the size of the place, or the status of a person that dictates greatness. The important thing is their commitment. He points out that many ‘small’ items were used by God’s heroes…a sling shot, a jawbone of a donkey, a tent peg, Moses’ staff…but when dedicated to God and His purposes they were powerful.

At this time of the year we get reminded of the ‘greatness’ of ‘small’ things in the story of Jesus. “Oh, Little Town of Bethlehem”, we sing, and the small town is renowned because it was prominent in the birth of our Lord. We are reminded of the other ‘little’ things in that wonderful account. Mary and Joseph were from obscure backgrounds and humble settings. Joseph was ‘just’ a carpenter. Mary, a young teenage girl, but they were committed to God and His plan for their lives. They were in a lowly stable, using a rustic manger, when God’s Son was born. Lowly shepherds were the ones to whom the first message of the ‘King’s birth’ was given. And the one common denominator was the fact that all were ‘dedicated’ and ‘committed’ to the Father’s work and plan…and Son. While this season of the year is vitally important, and messages drawn from it can be tremendously helpful, challenging us to examine ourselves, no matter how ‘small’ or ‘insignificant’ we consider ourselves to be, making sure that we are committed and devoted to God’s plan in our lives, as Mary and Joseph and the shepherds were. I really want to spend some time thinking about our location and the powerful things that happen in our relatively ‘little place’ we call home.

As I came down the hill into Estes Park late the other evening, with songs of the season echoing in my mind, I started to sing to myself: “Oh, little town of Estes Park, how still we see thee lie, above thy deep and dreamless sleep, the silent stars go by.” And then, in keeping with ‘No little people, no little places’ I began to think of things I had experienced in recent days, things validating Shaeffer’s premise. I had just attended the ‘Tenth Anniversary Holiday Concert’ in which our High School Chorus and University of Colorado Health, blessed and delighted every person present. It occurred to me that I could easily have been sitting in a concert hall in a major city, so outstanding was the performance. There are many such things that we can be proud of even though some might see us as a ‘little’ city: our award-winning High School marching band; our athletic teams that compete with, and often win against, teams from much larger schools; our School Board, recently honored as one of the best in the state; small groups in our city that benefit many, and on and on. You can think of many such things, can’t you?

Insert your own accomplishments of our ‘little city’ and you’ll know how devoted we are to excellence in so many ways. Certainly, not the least of things for which this ‘little’ place can be proud, is that our ‘few thousands’ host ‘millions’ of people each summer and do it so well. Truly throughout our community there are no ‘little people’ and each of us can be thankful to be part of our ‘little Paradise’ and all it accomplishes.

“Meet The New Artists” Show At The Art Center The Art Center of Estes Park is pleased to announce its first show of the year, “Meet the New Artists, ” January 5February 10, 2018. The artists who joined the Art Center artist membership in 2017 will be the featured artists. We invite you to the opening reception January 5 from 5-8:00 p. m. to join us for the festivities in celebrating these artists.

This show is sponsored by Don and Marty Bender. This year we are celebrating four artists, Scott Dorman, Mark Hackmeier, Betty Horschler and Dawn Wilson.

Scott Dorman ~ Having lived in Estes Park for 52 years (almost a native), Scott considers himself fortunate to have raised a family here, operated a business here, and to have had a fulfilling 33 year career in the fire service, serving the Estes Park community as Fire Chief for 20 years.

Scott has always been appreciative of the beauty of nature and enjoyed capturing this beauty in photographs. As he approached retirement from his career as a Fire Chief, he began fulfilling a long-time goal of learning as much as he

could about digital photography with an emphasis on landscapes. he has attended classes through Nikon, Scott Kelby Photography, Lighthaus Camera, and National Geographic. He also had the privilege of studying under one of Colorado’s most renowned landscape photographers, John Fielder. Scott has gradually expanded his skills and heeded the often-heard advice, “Always have your camera ready and take lots of pictures!” He feels blessed to live in two areas that provide unending opportunities to develop his craft – Estes Park, Colorado and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Using his Nikon D800 full frame camera, he has enjoyed shooting varied and beautiful scenery – majestic mountain ranges, the Milky Way, lava flows and waterfalls, to name a few. He said, “I strive, through my photography, to make the viewer feel as if they are standing at the very spot.” Scott’s photographs have been displayed at The Studio Fine Art and Framing and the Art Center of Estes Park. One of his Hawaiian photographs was used as the signature photo for the mobile application of a property management company on the Big Island

of Hawaii. After taking part in an amazing photo institute at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, his image of the G-61 lava flow entry was selected from a field of submissions for publication in Hawai’i Magazine for the Friends of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. As he continues to expand his knowledge and experience in this medium, he looks forward to the many opportunities to share the natural world as seen through his lens.

Mark Hackmeier ~ Mark tries to capture light at beautiful moments at spectacular places. A tourist takes a picture so they may remember what they saw.

Mark takes a picture in hopes that you will feel the same emotions and lasting moments he did when he saw an amazing scene. Mark spent forty years learning and sharing with great photographers. He lives in Estes Park with his incredible wife Susan. They have four beautiful children and five amazing grandchildren. Mark says “I hope at least a few times you will utter the word ‘WOW!’” Betty Horschler ~ Betty is originally from Belleville, Illinois. She has always been an animal lover, and animals are a big source of inspiration and subject matter for her work. Since she moved to Estes Park in 2017, she has found a wealth of inspiration in the beautiful

wildlife and landscapes of Colorado. She enjoys blending organic and geometric shapes in her drawings. Betty uses bright, vibrant colors in much of her work, but she also loves the simple contrast of black and white. Although she dabbles in many different forms of art, her preferred medium is drawing in pen, ink, and marker. This is because it allows her to easily create the fine details she loves so much, as well as being portable.

Betty loves to be able to climb up a cluster of rocks and sit and draw while looking at the beautiful mountain views. She prefers to use photos or real life as a reference to build off of, rather than working in exact realism. One of the most beautiful aspects of art to her is that you can make it anything you want it to be.

She has enjoyed making art from a very young age, and was blessed with supportive parents who helped foster the creativity that has always been an important part of her life. Studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago gave her the opportunity to learn new techniques and be inspired by many great artists, both classical and contemporary. Betty plans to continue developing her art alongside the many talented artists in Colorado.

Dawn Wilson ~ Dawn Wilson is a professional and award-winning nature photographer specializing in photographing wildlife of high latitudes and

high altitudes of the Rocky Mountains and Alaska. Her work has appeared worldwide in exhibits and in print, including Defenders of Wildlife, Colorado Outdoors, Outdoor Photographer, Nature's Best Photography, and calendars from National Geographic, Colorado Life and ASPCA. In addition to photography, Ms. Wilson also writes travel articles, which have been published in MotorHome magazine, Outdoor Photographer, Wyoming Wildlife, and more. A native of New Jersey, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Rowan University and an

MBA from Temple University before moving to Colorado in 2002. Checking The Political Mood To The Editor: I have been a town resident since 2009.

I met my wife, Kathleen George, here at the Stanley Hotel, proposed to her there and got married there. We own and operate Rustic Mountain Charm downtown and love our life together here in Estes Park. I got involved in the community as soon as I could, because community involvement has always been a passion of mine. Little did I know how easy it was to volunteer in this community! I have served on several Boards in town including the Estes Valley Partners for Commerce, the Estes Valley Planning Commission, the Local Marketing District and the Trail-Gazette Editorial Board. I have made it a point to attend the Town Board meetings and Study Sessions regularly, offering comments and suggestions as I thought appropriate.

On January 4, I will attend the Town Trustee Candidates Forum, because I am seriously considering becoming a candidate in next April’s election. As some may recall, I stood for election two years ago. Though, I didn’t receive enough votes to be elected, I learned a great deal from the experience. I learned the issues then facing the community and I met many people, learning from them as well.

That experience reinforced my belief that public input on issues is ever and always essential. Our Town Board changes its

composition every 2 years. In considering whether or not to become a candidate, I am taking this opportunity to reach out to the community. Because my platform will based on Openness, Accessibility and Transparency. I would like to know what you think.

2) What do you believe are the most important issues currently facing our Town?

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1906, Dmitri Shostakovich studied piano with his mother at the age of nine. He would live to write fifteen symphonies, fifteen string quartets, and six concertos, along with solo piano works, operas, ballets, and more. Forced to live most of his life under a totalitarian regime, Shostakovich was sometimes held in favor by Soviet leaders, then just as quickly would fall out of favor. His life story is considered as riveting as his famous music.

Since space is limited, students must choose either the morning or afternoon session and may not alternate between sessions. Each class is limited to 48 students. All classes will take place at the Estes Valley Library, and there is no cost to participate.

Instructor Derald DeYoung has taught previous courses on the music of Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Schubert, Bach and Schumann. Dr. DeYoung is Professor of Music Emeritus from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he taught for 27 years before moving to Estes Park full time in 2005.

Radon Awareness Program January 25 Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, invisible, tasteless gas that is dispersed in outdoor air, but which can reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings. Radon comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. The risk of developing lung cancer comes from breathing radon gas that seeps undetected into your home from the soil beneath your home through foundation cracks, dirt floors, loose fitting pipes, slab joints or block walls.

Every house is different. Only individual testing can determine if your home may have a radon problem. Measuring radon levels in your home is simple and inexpensive. Plan to attend the radon awareness program on January 25, 2018,

Celebrating Ten Highlights From 2017 At The Library It’s hard to believe: 2017 will soon enter the ether of our memory. While 2016 commemorated the Centennial Year of the Estes Valley Library, 2017 was equally notable for the many efforts building upon that momentum. Here, in chronological order, are ten of those highlights: 1) New programs were launched to address the community priorities that form the Library’s strategic goals. Health literacy programs, teen-focused programs like Youth in Action, and immigrant-focused services like one-on-one language tutoring are examples of initiatives which we’ll continue to build upon in 2018.

2) Library Collections, both print and digital, continued to grow—with over 40,000 items in print and another 300,000 accessible electronically. Tech literacy classes and Book-A-Librarian appointments are great ways to learn more.

3) Early and School-Age Literacy are vital. In 2017, Summer Reading and AfterSchool Programs kept kids excited about reading. The library brought famous children’s authors to town: David Catrow in February and Gennifer Choldenko in December.

4) The 2017 Patron Satisfaction Survey yielded nearly 800 responses, with valuable insights that will help us align Library services with your needs and priorities for the next several years. View survey results at estesvalleylibrary.org.

5) The Summer Used Book Sale was a shoppers’ delight for book lovers and bargain hunters. Hosted by the Library Friends & Foundation, the huge summer sale yielded $26,000, while December’s holiday sale yielded $4000, with proceeds supporting vital Library services.

6) August’s Solar Eclipse generated tremendous excitement nationwide. Locally, the Library and our partners at the

Observatory welcomed hundreds of residents who watched the spectacle, sharing those special glasses in a festive community setting.

7) Celebrating Library Love was the theme in September as the Friends & Foundation welcomed the many donors who support literacy programs, digital collections, facility improvements, and growth to the financial endowment. We thank local author Walter Borneman for a delightful presentation that was the keynote of the special evening.

8) One Book One Valley heralded an exciting roster of programs in October, as our community took part in a valleywide reading and literacy celebration.

Author Reyna Grande led readers on an extraordinary journey, both in “The Distance Between Us” and in a featured talk attended by hundreds on October 12.

Kay Elizabeth Rusk Kay Elizabeth Johnson Rusk passed away on December, 16th, 2017. She was at her home and surrounded by family.

Kay was born January 15th, 1958 in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and grew up in the small town of Chatham, the youngest of five.

Kay loved her Finnish heritage and being a Yooper, and she loved Lake Superior.

Kay left the UP for Mt. Hood, OR in 1976, working at the beautiful Timberline Lodge where she became a Professional Ski Patroller. She also worked as the EMT for the Zig Zag Hot Shots, one of the first wildfire fighting units to include women in it’s ranks.

It was also on Mt. Hood where Kay met her future husband, Dave, and they moved to Steamboat Springs, CO in 1985, where Kay earned a coveted spot on the Steamboat Ski Patrol. Their first daughter, Mica Mary Esther, was born at 95 Valverdant on Dec 2, 1987.

In 1988, the young family moved briefly to Estes Park, purchased a home, and then to Decorah, Iowa, in 1990, where Kay was a Partner/Driver for Home Town Taxi. Their 2nd daughter, Madelyn Grace, was born at 1558 Manawa Trail Rd, on April, 20, 1993.

The family returned to Estes Park in 1996, working as resident managers at McGregor Mtn. Lodge before taking various positions at the Estes School district, which included being an aid for Owen Kent for four years and driving school bus, and raising their two daughters.

Kay’s life was an example of overcoming obstacles as defined by the Finnish concept Sisu, meaning strength, courage, perseverance, the ability to over come adversity. Kay also had a

strong faith and was a member of Rocky Mtn Evangelical Free Church for over 20 years. She was fond of calling herself a Christian socialist.

Both faith and Sisu come into play with her struggle with cancer. In June, 2010, Kay was diagnosed with stage 4, metastatic melanoma cancer and was given a year to live. By 2015, Kay was cancer free, following a below the knee amputation. Her recovery mantra that year was Walkdrive-hike-polka-ski-cancer free, to God be the Glory, which she achieved.

However, by September of 2017, the cancer found it’s way back and eventually took her life, but not her Spirit.

Kay was an example of God’s Love expressed. She met every person in a positive, upbeat, and caring way and people who met Kay described her as inspiring.

Kay’s legacy continues as we live out her example in our daily lives.

Kay is survived by her husband, Dave, her two daughters, Mica and Maddy, and her siblings, Dan, Marsha, Dave (Bear), and Don. Although Kay never had the opportunity to attend college, she emphasized the importance of education to her two daughter’s. Kay was so proud that both of her daughters pursued higher education. It would mean the world to Kay to know that you contributed to her daughters’ education fund, in lieu of flowers. Miriam Crow Arms Miriam Crow Arms passed away peacefully at high noon on Tuesday, December 19, at Estes Park Medical Center, after ninety years of a full life. She was born in Birmingham, AL, on Sept.

14, 1927, to Jack Crow and Jewel Markland Crow.

She and her sister left home as teenagers to work for the top-secret government Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Miriam’s job involved splitting the atom. What was only described to employees as building a “gadget” to shorten World War II turned out to be the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. A three-time cancer survivor, she eventually received federal compensation for radiation exposure. Miriam attended high school and college at Berea College in Berea, KY, a visionary school for Appalachian students. There she met Henry Windle Arms and married him on January 24, 1947. His career as a geologist took them to Champaign, IL, Dallas, TX, Casper, WY, Denver, CO, and Lafayette, LA. Her homes and gardens blossomed with her artistic sense.

Always interested in children, Miriam worked as a substitute teacher before completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1967. As a liberated woman in her 40s, Miriam worked in sales and “could sell a screen door to a submarine captain.” After working for a financial institution as a traveling saleswoman, she started her own business. Throughout the early days of the computer industry, she developed and sold financial aid software for colleges

and universities, based out of Dallas, Texas. She moved to Loveland in the 1990s, but after working on the 2000 census in Estes Park, the mountains drew her to “God’s country.” In her later years she treasured sitting by mountain streams, occasionally dropping a hook or capturing the beauty of the area on canvas. In her last years she called Good Samaritan and later Prospect Park Living Center home.Miriam lived life on her own terms. Her family and friends will remember her feisty spirit and infectious smile. She is survived by daughter Linda Arms White and sonin-law Charles Trigg White of Allenspark; daughter Sharon Arms, also of Allenspark; grandchildren James Bradley White of Hot Sulphur Springs, Robin Christine White of Pagosa Springs, Ryan Douglas White of Boulder, Katherine Lane White of Boulder, Melissa Louise Maher of San Antonio, TX, and Ezra Amédé Doucet of New Orleans, LA; great-grandchildren Rowan and Dory White, Kaden and Zane Edwards, and Sylvia Mira White of Boulder; and her beloved cat Missy II. The family expresses their gratitude to the staff of Good Samaritan, Prospect Park, and Estes Park Medical Center for their compassionate care of Miriam in the last few years. A private memorial will be held at some future date. A devoted mother and grandmother, she will be missed by all her family and friends.
