Upper Thompson Sanitation District has scheduled a Public Hearing to receive comment on the 2018 Budget, as part of the Regular Board Meeting, Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. The hearing will take place at the District’s administration office located at 2196 Mall Road, Estes Park, Colorado.

A proposed budget for the ensuing year of 2018 has been submitted to the Board of Directors of Upper Thompson Sanitation District. Donate at locations across town or at the Nov. 18 Tree Lighting Ceremony Every holiday season, the Blue Santa program collects non-perishable food, gifts and hygiene products for disabled, shut-in and elderly community members that need a little extra holiday cheer. Blue Santa is sponsored by the Estes Park Police Department Auxiliary.

It is anticipated that Blue Santa will assist nearly 100 people this year, and it’s not too late to nominate someone in need of assistance. To nominate a disabled, shut-in or elderly community member in need, please contact Captain Corey Pass at 970-5773828 or cpass@estes.org.

Community members may also donate to Blue Santa by visiting the Police Auxiliary at the Tree Lighting Ceremony Saturday, Nov. 19 from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the George Hix Riverside Plaza downtown. The Auxiliary asks everyone who attends the Tree Lighting Ceremony to bring at least one non-perishable food item or provide a cash donation to support the cause.

Sponsor Estes Park Free Shuttles For A Listing On Shuttles, Maps, Signs And Website As it prepares for the 2018 Estes Park Free Shuttle season, the Town of Estes Park is offering sponsorship opportunities to businesses and organizations wishing to provide support and receive a business listing on the shuttle system maps, shuttle interiors, stop signs and website. Estes Park’s Free Shuttles transported over 84,000 riders in 2017 to 60 stops throughout Estes Park and to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Participating sponsors receive a recognition listing on over 35,000 printed shuttle maps/schedules and at www.estes.org/sponsorshuttles.

A sponsorship application is available at www.estes.org/sponsorshuttles. Applications must be received no later than March 30, 2018.

Sponsorships are available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Contributions will fund operational costs related to services offered by the Town’s free shuttles, supporting the continuation of free

shuttle rides for thousands of guests and residents annually in the Estes Valley.

Operating daily from June 23 through Sept. 9 in 2018, shuttles make it convenient for residents and guests to leave their vehicles at a lodging facility, parkn-ride lot, or at home, and travel around town during the busy summer season. In addition, the Town’s trolley, the Elkhorn Express, offers free transportation during special events throughout the fall.

Climber Injured On Martha’s Couloir Route On Mt. Lady Washington

On Sunday, October 29, at approximately 11 a.m. Megan Kies, 31, from Lafayette, Colorado, was climbing the Martha's Couloir route on Mount Lady Washington in Rocky Mountain National Park, when she was struck by a rock that was dislodged above her.

Climbers in the area notified park staff via cell phone of the incident. She received multiple life threatening injuries.

Kies’ climbing partner and two additional climbers in the area provided aid to Kies. She was roped in when the incident happened and they were able to lower her. An additional bystander provided updated information on her condition and location to park staff.

Rocky Mountain National Park’s Search and Rescue Team members arrived on scene at 2 p.m. and provided Advanced Life Support care and placed Kies in a litter. With the assistance of bystanders, rescuers lowered her approximately 240

feet to the base of the climb. From there, they lowered her an additional 100 feet to a location on the scree slope above Chasm Lake.

Due to her location and severity of injuries, park rangers requested assistance from a Colorado National Guard helicopter to extricate her via a hoist operation, using a winch operated cable. This occurred at 5:20 p.m. A pre-staged Flight for Life air ambulance was landed in Chasm Meadow and received the patient from the National Guard helicopter. She was then flown from Chasm Meadow to St. Anthony's in Denver in critical condition. Rocky Mountain Rescue also assisted Rocky Mountain National Park’s Search and Rescue Team with this incident.

Tree-Lighting Ceremony Takes Place November 18 At George Hix Riverside Plaza

Donate to Blue Santa to support community members in need The Town of Estes Park’s Christmas tree-Lighting festivities will take place 4 – 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 in George Hix Riverside Plaza. The Highland Brass will headline a Rocky Mountain Winter Concert from 5 to 6 p.m. Mayor Todd Jirsa will perform the official lighting of the tree promptly at 6 p.m. then the Estes Park Elementary Rocky Mountain Echoes Choir will perform at 6:05 p.m.

Participants can celebrate the holiday season by decorating an ornament at the ornament workshop, or writing a letter to Santa and dropping it in his bag. Candy, cookies and hot chocolate will be provided as Santa poses for photos with children and listens to their Christmas wishes. All activities are free of charge.

Donations of non-perishable food, hygiene products and monetary dona-

tions will be accepted for the Blue Santa program by uniformed Police Department Auxiliary members.

Joe Neguse, Congressional Candidate In Estes Park Joe Neguse, Democratic Candidate for the 2nd Congressional District on the 2018 ballot, will be in Estes Park on Tuesday, November 21, at 6:00 p.m. to meet with voters and answer questions about his run for the U. S. Congress. This event will be held at Elkins Distilling Co., 1825 North Lake Avenue, Estes Park, and is free and open to the public.

Joe is a first generation American, whose parents immigrated to the U. S. from a war-torn country in East Africa many years ago. Joe is an attorney, civic leader and public servant who has spent his career working to expand opportunities for families across our state.

Until recently, Joe headed up the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, a position he was appointed to by Governor Hickenlooper. He left that position to avoid any conflict of interest with his run for Congress. In the past, Joe served as an elected member of CU’s Board of Regents, where he worked to

Be Smart: Prepare For Winter Weather, Know Who And When To Call For Help Winter is a magical time of year in Estes Park, but it comes with its risks. “Severe winter weather can arrive with little warning, and one concern is its ability to knock out our heating, power and water,” explains Kate Rusch, Public Information Officer for the Town of Estes Park.

In addition, high winds, ice, snow and freezing temperatures can make travel dangerous. Rusch continued, “If we all take time to do a few simple things now, it can make all the difference later, when it matters most.”

Prepare at home It is important to communicate with neighbors during severe weather, checking in on those who are elderly or disabled. Always call 9-1-1 during a medical emergency. And, all households should have the following provisions: • A mobile phone with an extra charged battery or external charger.

• A corded telephone in case telephone lines are not disrupted during a power outage • A non-electric heat source such as a woodburning or gas fireplace with plenty of fuel • Emergency supplies including non-perishable food, water, a battery-powered weather radio, flashlights, medicine and first-aid supplies, a fire extinguisher, smoke alarms, and extra batteries for phones, flashlights, radios and other necessary equipment • A back-up plan for powering any necessary medical equipment Prepare vehicles During severe weather, it is important to restrict travel to only the trips that are absolutely necessary. For necessary trips, drivers should not travel alone and should share a travel plan with others in advance. Fuel tanks should be kept nearly full at all times, and vehicles should be equipped with appropriate tires. Frost and snow should be cleared from vehicles before travel. Stow emergency supplies including a mobile phone, flashlight, extra batteries, warm blankets and clothing, first-aid supplies, a knife, water, high-calorie nonperishable food, tissues, paper towels, sand for traction, a shovel, a windshield scraper, basic tools, a tow rope, battery booster cables, a compass and road maps.

Crews will respond as soon as possible, but residents who require oxygen or other electricpowered medical equipment should have a 24hour backup plan. Always call 9-1-1 during a medical emergency.

If a downed power line is discovered, Utilities Director Reuben Bergsten advises citizens to immediately call 9-1-1. “Never touch a power line or anything that is in contact with the line,” he states. Overhead power lines are not insulated and are very dangerous. The Town’s trained Light and Power professionals will move the line; all others should stay clear of the area.

Reduce the risk of freezing water pipes Most water outages during winter are caused by frozen lines on private property. Private lines begin at the service tap on the water main.

They are most likely to freeze at the entry point of the building where there is less ground insulation. Property owners are responsible for handling these issues, as with any other household maintenance issue. Water outages determined to be related to the Town’s water distribution lines will be addressed by the Town of Estes Park Water Division. Report concerns to the Town’s 24-hour utility line 970-586-5335.

Residents should ensure they have adequate insulation and heating for water pipes in their homes and businesses. Pipes along exterior walls are particularly vulnerable to freezing.

Disconnect hoses and cover spigots with an insulated cap for the winter. If pipes freeze, open cold water faucets to provide an escape for water as it thaws. The Water Division can help locate the water shut-off so property owners can shut off their water service when pipes thaw, to reduce risk of flooding.

Most first responders – law enforcement, firefighters, EMT’s paramedics, will say they’re not heroes. They’ll say they are just doing their jobs. But putting their lives on the line, protecting the community they serve and saving lives makes them a hero in the lives of many they have saved.

At the most critical time, first responders come to your rescue. They always know what to do. Never afraid, never hesitant, they quickly size up the scene, assess the situation, make a firm decision and act immediately: the adeptness

is astonishing. You trust them with your life. Skillful, confident and always prepared.

On September 15th, these heroes came to the aid of a husband who had pulled his car into a parking spot in front of the police station. Four first responders came to the aid of a panicked husband and a wife in the front seat of the car in cardiac arrest. Responders began CPR and used an AED to assist in her care. Estes Park Medical Center’s

ambulance crew arrived on the scene and transported the patient to the emergency room with spontaneous circulation. The patient was further stabilized and flown to Medical Center of the Rockies for the next level of cardiac care.

Because of the swift action of the first responders, the patient was discharged from the hospital with a full recovery and no neurological deficits.

On Thursday evening, October 23rd, Director of EMS, Guy Beesely and his crew presented Chad Edwards, Police Officer, Julie Lee, Auxiliary Police Member, Monte Allen, Master Police Officer, and Mark Swallow, Sargent, with Certificates of Appreciation and a one-of-akind EMS challenge coin. Joining Guy Beesley were Chip Brownlee, Paramedic, Kyle Dalton, Paramedic, Erle Collom, Paramedic, Kevin Sturmer, Paramedic, and Shelby Mutzl, EMT. “Rapid emergency care provided by first responders is crucial to the patient’s survival. In such life or death situations the actions of an emergency medical responder has a direct and immediate impact on the outcome of the patient, “said Guy Beesley. “Because of the quick thinking and action taken for this patient, she was able to make a full recovery and be sent home. We are grateful for the assistance our crews are provided by the many first responders in our community”

Better Together Dinner To Benefit Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership The Annual Better Together Dinner, benefiting Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership (EVRJP) will be held November 19, 2017 at Mama Roses Restaurant beginning at 5:30 p.m. Along with fabulous cuisine, attendees will be given the opportunity to learn more about restorative justice in our community. This year’s dinner will feature the partnership between the Estes Park School District and EVRJP. Those interested in attending may call 970-577-3829.

Seating is limited and all proceeds benefit EVRJP. For 15 years EVRJP, a partnership between the Estes Park Police Department and a 501c3, has been offering services to the Estes Valley. The program began as a diversion opportunity for low level juvenile crimes, through using the Community Group Conferencing model. This model offers participants the opportunity to take responsibility for their actions and commit to repairing the harm caused through their actions. Community Group Conferencing has since grown to accept certain felony cases and now serves adults.

In 2006 EVRJP began the Community Circles program that assists parolees (core member) in re-entering the community through offering support and accountability. This year-long program allows for community members and trained circle keepers to assist the core member in learning skills and making good decisions that allow them to suc-

For assisting with groups or with problem solving not involving high conflict, the Facilitated Conversations program was developed. Each program is a structured process that allows for those involved to come to consensus on resolution and work toward long term relationship repair.

Also in 2014 EVRJP and the Estes Park School District began offering preventative programs for students. Girls Circle and later Boys Council was offered to any student (ages 10-18) interested in delving into topics that are relevant to adolescents. The Circles/Councils are intended to build resiliency, connection, confidence and self-esteem. EVRJP also began offering Student Support and Accountability Circles to assist high school students who have struggles that might prohibit them from being successful in school.

• I fell on the icy sidewalk the other day.

A maintenance guy saw my split-second slip-and-splat as he was driving by and came over in his truck. “Are you OK? ” he called out. I had bounced right back to my feet and acted as if nothing had happened.

“I’m OK, ” I said and smiled. He got out of his truck and started sanding the area where I fell, asking again if I was hurt, just to make sure. It was so nice of him to check on me.

Sure enough, my supervisor (at least 20 years younger than me!) had given his approval.

OK. Okay. O.K. We write and say a variation of this phrase several times a day.

Every single one of us uses it, without exception. Have you ever thought about what the letters O and K stand for or where the expression comes from? My co-worker John recently brought this up at the lunch table and everyone there was stumped. I was dumbfounded at my own lack of curiosity. I had never, ever once thought about the derivation of the term “OK, ” and that’s not OK. Considered the most frequently used “word” on the planet (!), the origin of OK is debated. (Surprise, surprise. Do we agree on anything on this planet?) Some say it originates from the Choctaw Indian word

“okeh, ” meaning “it is so. ” Another option is that it can be traced back to two West African phrases, “waw-kay” or “o ke” meaning “yes, indeed.” Linguists call this a backchannel, which is a listener’s response to a primarily one-way communication.

(Similar to today’s teens saying “whatever” although not related by implied meaning.)

Some believe OK is a corruption of the Scots-Irish phrase “och aye, ” or “oh yes. ” Others think it comes from the Greek response “ola kala, ” meaning “all good. ” The most widely accepted theory of the origin of OK, however, is this: there was a fad during the mid-1800s where people used abbreviations to express themselves, such as “NG” for “no go, ” and “SP” for “small potatoes. ” It was considered comical back then to use exaggerated misspellings so using “OK” for “all correct” was derived from the silly “Oll Korrect” or an earlier “OW” for “oll wright. ” (They’re real knee-slappers, aren’t they?)

Once the term became common, the Democratic Party used it to encourage voters to cast their vote for presidential candidate Martin Van Buren, nicknamed “Old Kinderhook” from Kinderhook, New York.

“Vote for OK, ” the Democrats said in 1840.

Whig opponents, who wanted to make the Democrats look bad, claimed that same “OK, ” or “Oll Korrect” was simply Andrew Jackson’s bad spelling. (By the by, when Van Buren ran for president he had Jackson’s support. And he won the election, so obviously the Whigs’ strategy failed.)

The widely publicized “OK” made the phrase popular across the United States almost 180 years ago, and here we are, using it today without a thought about its history.

Aviation Club Meeting November 14 The next meeting of the Estes Park Internationale Aviation Club will be on November 14, 2017, at 6:30 p.m., in the Hondius Room of the Estes Valley Library. This meeting is free, open to the public, and everyone is welcome. Our speaker will be John Wray, and he will be speaking about his experiences flying aerial refueling missions (Tankers, the KC 135) in the skies over Vietnam and Southeast Asia, to provide fuel for all types of aircraft used in the war. Many types of missions would not have been possible without aerial refueling, and many missions owed their successful completion to the support provided by tankers, sometimes in very high threat areas. John has over

6,000 hours of flight time, with 700 hours of Area 1 combat time, and was awarded three Air Medals during his flying in Vietnam in support of combat operations.

John also flew one tour in Southeast Asia in the C-130 aircraft, which supplied even more harrowing stories to be told. John's missions originated from a number of bases in Thailand and South Vietnam where the KC135 and C-130 aircraft were located.

John retired from the Air Force in 1973, and has been in business since then.

November Nonprofit Lunch & Learn To Focus On Effective Planning, Programs And Services The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center is continuing the unique series of roundtable discussions focused on the Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards. The November session will explore the challenges and opportunities surrounding ensuring effecting planning, and how the board can monitor and strengthen programs and services.

This Lunch & Learn will be facilitated

by Melissa Westover, of the Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership and will be held on Thursday, November 16 from Noon – 1:30 p.m. in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library.

Honoring A Life With A Receipt Of A Bequest With the passing of Ray Cushing, the Estes Park Medical Center Foundation was notified that it had been generously included in Mr. Cushing’s estate plans. The EPMC Foundation staff and board of directors feel extremely honored whenever a gift by bequest is made in support of the high-quality health care provided at Estes Park Medical Center. Gifts designated in a will or from an estate provide a unique opportunity to honor the life of an individual or couple.

In many instances, the intention for this type of gift is made known when the individual or couple first makes the decision. Other times, as in the instance with Mr. Cushing, the EPMC Foundation is only notified that it is a beneficiary when the estate is being disbursed.

There is a notable benefit to informing the EPMC Foundation of your intentions (even if at a later time your plans change). When the Foundation’s leadership is alerted to plans for an estate gift, they will speak with you to learn more about your specific desires for the gift. If there is a particular program or department that has special significance for

you, or if you’re interested in contributing to the endowment so that earnings from your gift will benefit the Medical Ray Cushing Center on an ongoing basis, or if you would want your gift to be used for the current greatest need — whatever your wishes are, they will be recorded so that any gift from your estate will be used exactly as you’d like.

Individuals and couples who make known their intentions to include the EPMC Foundation in their estate plans are also inducted into the EPMC Legacy Society and the Estes Valley Legacy Fall River Society. It is early Tuesday morning as I write this column. The snow outside my window is beautiful and Sunshine has had such a romp in it that I had to mop the kitchen. Ergo why I am a little late for my press deadline. She came in matted in snowballs and dripping snow all over the floor. After her clean up, she is snoozing on the day bed as I type. Playing in the snow is exhausting…for both of us…her play, my clean up.

Speaking of clean up, I had a most delightful group of guests the other night.

And they all helped with the clean up as I used all my pretty silver, crystal and china. Don, Karen and Lorie were my guests for shrimp and grits and a new dish of broiled tomatoes. For dessert we had my tried and true bread pudding.

Why the reason for the dinner? Don had the misfortune of being known for gluing chairs. I had seven of my eight dining room chairs falling apart. He was kind enough to repair all seven and is now looking at my kitchen chairs that are also in need of gluing. Karen is his kind wife and Lorie is my good friend.

The mix was great and all so cordial, I hated for the night to end.

I thought the evening would be a disaster as the first thing that occurred was my cabinet doors were all askew. I met Don with a screwdriver before he could

get a drink. Then my blender broke while making Pina Coladas. No problem, I would use my new food processor…pops, used the wrong blade from old processor. Now that was stuck, Don to the rescue as he had to pour the drinks into a pitcher so he could jimmy the blade off. On to the dinner party…I hoped. Haven’t any of you had these kinds of things happen?

Well, all ended well. The new tomato recipe is as follows. I made extras and was glad I did as the ladies took seconds.

Broiled Tomato Rounds Serves four (not if someone wants more) 4 slices of bread, lightly toasted on one side 4 slices of tomatoes (1/2 inch thick) 2 cloves of pressed garlic ½ cup Miracle Whip, no substitutes.

Dried tarragon to sprinkle on top Cut bread into circles. (I did this with large glass and toasted first.) Place slices of tomatoes on toasted side of bread.

Mix Miracle Whip and garlic and spread on tomatoes. Sprinkle with tarragon and broiled until lightly brown. Pretty and colorful.

Quota Club Seeking Donations To Put An AED In Every EPPD Vehicle It happens often. A call for medical aid comes in to our dispatch center and someone is suffering cardiac arrest, is not breathing or has collapsed and police are very often first on the scene.

Estes Park Police officers are in need of a tool to help them save lives in those crucial first minutes when the heart stops beating the way it should.

EPPD recently asked Quota Club of Estes Park to help them equip all of the police cars with these life-saving AEDs. Quota members are eager to help this fund-raising endeavor and this letter will be going out to business owners this week.

Dear Estes Park Business Owner; We are writing to you on behalf of the Estes Park Quota Club Foundation. As you may know, in past years the Quota Club has raised over hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide ambulances for our community.

This year we are focusing on the business community. We are asking you to assist us in raising funds so that we can put AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in every police vehicle. Currently our officers share two AEDs, that they essentially check out of the office when they go out on a call. What a wonderful thing it would be if every car were equipped with this lifesaving tool.

Having an AED at hand can indeed save lives. An AED is a portable, easy to use device that measures the heartbeat via sticky pads attached to the chest. The AED will deliver a shock via these pads to restart the heart of a person suffering a cardiac arrest. When cardiac arrest occurs, defibrillation is the only means of restarting the heart and preventing death.

When asked the reason why the Estes Park Police Department needs these AED units for their patrol cars, Captain Rick Life stated, “Quite often, members of our

police department are first on scene at an emergency call since our officers are always out patrolling the town. Having the ability to start defibrillation before the ambulance even gets there greatly improves the chances of saving lives.” Captain Life added, “All of our officers are trained First Responders. I have personally seen a person whom I thought had no chance of making it, saved by an AED. This person was unresponsive at the initial call and through the help of the AED, was talking to the ambulance crew on their way into the ambulance. It was amazing and a very happy ending to that situation.”

Our goal is to raise $25,000 by the first of the year. We know the importance of a quick and early response when someone is having a sudden cardiac arrest emergency. For every minute without treatment, a victim’s rate of survival decreases by 7% to 10%!

Please join us in our quest to provide a safer community, not only for our residents, but for the thousands of guests that come each year to visit this great little town. Estes Park EDC Community Breakfast Celebrates Successes, Encourages Next Steps By: Adam Shake, Dir. of Communications & Bus. Dev. Nearly 100 Estes Park community leaders attended the recent annual Estes Park EDC Community Leaders Breakfast. The breakfast was held at the Ridgeline Hotel Conference Center on November 2nd.

The purpose of the breakfast meeting was to inform community leaders about economic investments and successes in the Estes Valley and energize community members to continue promoting solutions to challenges facing the community.

Estes Park EDC Board Chair Jim Pickering welcomed the group and recognized those that have had a hand in developing the Estes Park EDC by stating that “As of today, 49 different individuals representing 35 different businesses, taxing districts and organizations have served as Directors of the Estes Park EDC. 15 other individuals and businesses have supported us financially. The Estes Park EDC has worked with 33 different organizations on a project basis at the local, regional, state and national level. In addition to our directors, 70 different individuals have served on our broadband, childcare services, code development, strategic planning, work force housing and entrepreneurial center committees.

Jon Nicholas, President/CEO of Estes Park EDC started by quoting Steve Jobs: “Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.” He then described some of the community awards received over the last year to including: the Estes Park School District Board receiving the CASB All State Board Award for Colorado; 2) the Town of Estes Park winning the national Mid-Sized Circle of Champions America in Bloom Award; and 3) the Town of Estes Park receiving the AWPA Colorado Award for the newly completed parking structure.

The breakfast also recognized a number of community investments in the Estes Valley completed or begun over the last year including: the Ridgeline Hotel purchase by Delaware North and phase one renovation; improvement and expansion at the Stanley Hotel campus; the Fall River Village expansion; completion of the

O’Reilly Auto Parts and Dollar General stores; and the openings of the Bird and Jim restaurant and Seasoned – An American Bistro. The Estes Valley Recreation and Park District expects to complete the Community Center in early 2016.

In 2018, Estes Park EDC anticipates focusing more resources and time to address barriers to workforce housing and childcare, expansion of programs and services for entrepreneurs through a relationship with the Innosphere in Fort Collins, and increased business retention & expansion activities. Estes Park EDC will also continue to support the Town’s progress on addressing high-speed affordable broadband services for the Estes region.

Board Chair Jim Pickering also acknowledged that Estes Park EDC received the Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC) Small Community of the Year Award for 2017; and a 2017 Silver Excellence in Economic Development Award for its small community General Purpose Website, from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

The difference between those wearing reflective gear and those wearing white shirts is startling.

Watch this to learn more.

The more surface area that includes retroreflective material the better motorists will see you. Gear should be front and back, up and down the body. You want motorists to know what they see is a person.

There is a degree of reflection. As you may have noticed, road signs vary in how reflective they are with some extremely bright and others dull. This is true for retro-reflective gear. This is referred to as candle power: the brightness of the material. “A reasonable, accurate representation of one candle power of brightness level is approximately 2.5 times greater than white cotton fabric. ” (Patent information on retro-reflective gear, google.com/patents/US5588156). Some

gear can have a candle power of 125 and even 500.

In traffic engineering there is a term used that assumes 2.5 second reaction time: decision sight distance. A pedestrian without any reflective clothing can be seen by a motorist about 50 feet away in the dark. According to traffic engineers your stopping distance at 55mph on dry pavement with good breaks is about 4.5 seconds and the distance is about 290 feet. Do the math.

There is a lot to factor into high visibility outdoor gear and just how far out you want motorists to see you depends on the road conditions, weather, night, dusk or dawn, and speed limit. Snowy conditions are the worst with a stopping point of 533 feet in 10.6 second.

Street and construction crews; police, fire fighters and first responders all wear retroreflective gear according to the risks of their job. There is reason for this and we would benefit from their example.

Lights (headlamps, blinking lights front and back) can also help keep you safer as supplement to retro-reflective gear.

My personal experience running in rural Larimer County on gravel roads wearing reflective gear is that motorists slow down (good) and some have even stopped to thank me because they could see me. My dog, Shakespeare, also wears reflective gear.

With more people taking to the streets to exercise, enhanced visibility is important for the safety of walkers, runners and cyclists. As it continues to get darker earlier to the winter solstice, please be safe – this is appreciated by motorists.

Give Life A Shape “The supreme question about a work of art is out of how deep a life does it spring. ” James Joyce What is the value of art in her life? “It’s essential. I have to do it. I get depressed if I don’t. It’s a daily meditation. When I’m drawing I have no sense of time or place. It doesn’t matter what I’m drawing. I’m focused. I turn the paper. It’s acrobatic and provides different perspectives.”

Patricia Greenberg grew up on Long Island knowing she would be an artist. At age seven she used television to teach herself drawing. She loved working with her hands, making dolls and their clothing. Parental encouragement reinforced budding belief in herself. “The practice of art,” she says, “makes you more reflective and slows you down. It’s uplifting, something you can teach or share with others.” Pat earned her first commission while a fine arts major at SUNY Stony Brook, and has, among other jobs, worked with children with disabilities, as a waitress, theater usher and catalog paste-up artist.

“I am happy to be alive as long as I can paint.” Frida Kahlo Pat and her retired physician husband moved to Estes Park from New York in 2004 (“There is something about the wide open sky that makes you look up in

wonder. ”). She designed t-shirts for the Wool Market and the Estes Park Marathon, and has illustrated books for children. Pat practices tai chi and yoga, and exudes a calm, joyful, spiritual serenity characteristic of abundant internal harmony. Nowhere is this more apparent than in her current exhibit, a tenpiece creation entitled “Yamas & Niyamas, ” now on display on the second floor of the Estes Park Medical Center. When you visit the exhibit you will perceive that Pat’s art springs from a manifestly deep life.

Yoga’s guiding ethical and moral principles are known as yamas and niyamas; practicing them helps one achieve a balanced and fulfilling life.

“The five yamas describe one’s outward behaviors toward others, ” says Pat. “They include being truthful, doing no harm, and not stealing. The five niyamas are directed inwardly and emphasize self-discipline and restraint, including contentment, self-observation and devotion. Each yama and niyama has a specific hand gesture called a mudra, and each mudra forms the basis of one of the ten pieces in the exhibit. ” Pat used her own hands

as models for the mudras.

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have. ” Maya Angelou There is a delicious and recurring complexity to Pat’s artwork. Each piece is labelled in Sanskrit calligraphy and holds four circles reflecting elements of the natural world: land animals, sky creatures, water creatures, trees, plants and flowers. Each piece also restates “The Golden Rule” through world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Native American spiritual practices, Hinduism, Confucianism (Example from Daoism: “I am good to people who are good.

I am also good to people who are not good.”). Additionally, each piece incorporates a specific color scheme, geometric shape and spiritual number, as well as vertical chakras representing energy centers in the body.

Pat spent several months in research, and was continuously reminded of the Golden Rule. She chose to relate each drawing to a major religion. She taught herself how to write in Sanskrit. “When

the actual drawing process was complete, ” says Pat, “I embellished each with ribbons, beads and decorative papers. My intent was to honor everyone and everything, to create a serene visual and spiritual experience for all. ” “Creativity is contagious, pass it on. ” Albert Einstein “Working on a series keeps me busy. It usually takes fifty to sixty hours to create a single piece. I try to make each piece as a painting, even though they are drawings. Now I’m working on a new series of four drawings. The collages will be made into plates decorated with sunflowers, butterflies and chickens, including a feather design. My hope is to be finished by spring. ” Asked if art is necessary in our lives, Pat doesn’t hesitate.

Since then, she placed top three in 13 of 16 freeskiing contests entered and has been awarded Breakthrough Performance in 2005, five-time Best Female Performance, and ten-time Reader Poll winner for her roles in nine Matchstick Productions films at the annual Powder Magazine Video Awards, in addition to appearing in the 2007 documentary Steep, All.I.Can and Into the Mind by Sherpas Cinema, six Warren Miller films, and 2015s The Great Siberian Traverse by Powder Magazine and Sherpas Cinema. Her travels with The North Face have allowed her to make first descents in Baffin Island, Greenland, and 20,000 ft Reddomaine Peak in China, as well as a ski descent of Denali.

She was named one of 50 most influential action sports athletes in 2013 by ESPN. When she’s not skiing, Ingrid still stays outside as much as possible in her home in Leavenworth, Washington, running, biking, and gardening to relax and keep fit. Ingrid is grateful for the opportunities that her sport brings her, especially getting to travel and ski with “amazing people around the world.”

“AND I…I…AM A BROWNIE!” Last week I shared thoughts about ‘self-talk’ and the impact that it has on a person’s success. We all know people who developed good self-esteem due to positive images they received from others. A little girl was asked to tell about her family. She replied, proudly, “My uncle is President. My dad is a Senator. And, I…I am a Brownie!” Her pride in her achievement was not diminished by the fact that there was so much ‘greatness’ around her in her family. Her story makes me so happy for those Scouting families whose sons meet in our Fish Creek building who will proudly say…and show… “I am a Boy Scout!” as they work to gain merit badges, thus strengthening self-esteem. These parents, Scoutmasters and Den Mothers are contributing to very good futures.

Contrast the self-esteem of these youths with that of the 12-year-old boy who threw himself off a Vermont bridge in an attempted suicide, and the dozens of young people who have tried to or succeeded in taking their lives, often due to school or cyber bullying that robbed them of good feelings about themselves, leading them to fall prey to negative ‘self-talk’. Our young people need to hear good messages about themselves and then keep those ‘messages’ playing in their minds, thus, programming themselves to be productive and successful. Be sure children you know are getting these.

Some adults have helped change the direction of a youth’s life by changing the way they see themselves. Some years ago a preacher’s family was having dinner in a Tennessee café while on vacation. A distinguished-looking man, learning the father was a minister, shared his story. He told of being an illegitimate son of a promiscuous woman in a small town. He was used to hearing people talking in hushed tones when he went by. He knew their talk was about ‘who might be the father’. He had few friends, since parents didn’t want their children associating with ‘that boy!’ Lonely and alienated, the rare pleasant time in his life was when he would ‘sneak’ in late to a local church for the Sunday service. He sat on the back seat so he could rush out at the end, thus, avoiding having to interact with anyone. One Sunday, however, he arrived late only to find the back seats full, meaning he had to go toward the front to find a seat. As a result, when the service ended and he tried to bolt for the door the aisle was blocked by people leaving. As he searched frantically for a way out, he felt two hands on his young shoulders. A booming voice asked, “And whose boy might you be?” The heads of many turned and people listened. Would this be the time that they might learn the name of the boy’s ‘dad’? He felt humiliated, but that vanished when the preacher said, “Wait, I know whose son you are! You’re one of God’s children. The likeness is unmistakable!” The man continued, “That made all the difference in my life. So, thank you preacher, like that man, you help people be different persons. If not for him…and his words…where would I be?” He nodded in appreciation as he led an entourage of his friends toward the door. One stopped and returned to the table. He said, “Do you know who that man is? He’s the two-time governor of the state of Tennessee! Thanks for making a difference!”

What a difference each of us can make if we look for and encourage those qualities we see in others and help cultivate them. The Bible says, “Train up (encourage) a child in the way that he should go and he will not depart from it.” Please consider those you see and help them see who…what…they can be. You will be such a blessing.

Free Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Counseling Offered At Senior Center

The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division and the University of Colorado Health Aspen Club collaborate each year to offer free assistance with the Medicare process. One-on-one counseling sessions are conducted by trained State Health Insurance Program Counselors from the UCHealth Aspen Club.

On Thursday, November 16, individual 30-minute counseling sessions will be offered to help participants review their Prescription Drug Plans (PDP). Sessions will take place at the Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Please call or stop by the Senior Center to sign up.

You can make changes to your PDP from October 15 through December 7,

2017. If you are happy with your current coverage, no changes are needed. There is a PDP worksheet to fill out prior to your appointment. Worksheets can be obtained at the Senior Center.

The Aspen Club was established in 1989 to provide a wide range of health education, screenings, hospital discounts, and social opportunities to residents of Larimer County. Advent Tea, Bazaar And Lunch (And Kraut Burgers!)

Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church will hold their annual Advent Tea, Bazaar and Lunch on Saturday, December 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in their Christian Family Center on Highway 36 and 2nd Street.

A tea table with Christmas cookies, coffee and tea will be available for all to enjoy while shopping for baked goods, holiday decorations and their famous kraut burgers. The ladies have made plenty for sale. You can call Cheryl Schutz at 586-4714 or Jolene Svancara at

586-3287 to place advance orders for kraut burgers or to pick them up before the event.

Lunch will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and includes your choice of a bar-b-que chicken sandwich or a kraut burger along with a salad, relishes, a dessert and a beverage.

There will be special tables from Lutheran Bethesda Communities with many hand crafted items, especially fabric items. Proceeds from these tables will benefit Lutheran group homes in the Denver area. The Community Prayer Quilters of Estes Park will also have hand crafted items for sale.

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) wishes to extend an invitation to everyone in the Estes Valley to join in the festivities.

All proceeds benefit local, regional, and world-wide mission projects.

Holiday Market November 18 & 19 The 5th Annual Estes Park Holiday Market is set to take place the weekend before Thanksgiving on Saturday, November 18th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Newcomers Club Alive, Well And Active For Fifty Years The Estes Park Newcomers Club has been active in the Estes Park area for over fifty years. The club is a social, nonprofit, and non-discriminatory organization whose purpose is to help area residents learn about the community and develop new friendships.

The Estes Park Newcomers Club has recently had several fun and successful events such as the Elk Rut Tailgate and the Brews Cruise bus to three Fort Collins craft breweries. Upcoming events include the November general meeting at the Crag’s Lodge, a fabulous float in the Estes Park “Catch the Glow Parade,” sponsored by Westover Construction, a holiday Wine and Cheese party in December, and a Newcomers’ Reunion Party at the new Community Center in March.

The November general meeting will be held at the beautiful Crag’s Lodge, 300 Riverside Drive, on November 16. Social time will begin at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:00 p.m., and a guest speaker at 7:00 p.m. Reservations must be made by November 10. The menu is a mixed green salad with a lemon champagne vinaigrette dressing, chicken piccata with a lemon caper sauce or a vegetable pasta.

The dinner includes potatoes, seasonal vegetables, rolls, and peach cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream. Coffee, tea, and water finish the menu.

The program will be our guest speaker Teresa Jackson the Community Center Operations Manager. The new Community Center is nearing completion. It will be a treasure to our community as a gathering place and fitness center. Teresa Jackson joined the Community Center staff in November 2016. She received her Bachelor of Science in Recreation Administration from Sacramento State University in 2000. Prior to joining the district, Teresa served as Recreation General Manager for the City of Sacramento where she directed the Special Events Services, Park Reservations, Marketing, and Leisure Enrichment. She also managed two community centers. Later she was Event Manager for the City of Boulder. She and her husband Jeff have been married for ten years and have two sons Zepher, eight, and Arlo, four.

On a final note, the Newcomers Club is looking forward to participating in the Catch the Glow Parade and inviting both current members and alumni to march with the float in the parade. Duck Race 2018 Seeks Beneficiary Groups

Do you represent or know of an Estes Valley nonprofit charity or organization that would like to share the proceeds of the 2018 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival? Now’s the time to step up, ask your members if they will sell Adoption Forms, and submit paperwork for consideration by the Rotary Club of Estes Park Duck Race Festival Organizations Committee.

Letters have been sent to past and potential beneficiaries, according to Brad Rosenbaum, chairman of the 30th Duck Race Festival. Groups that have not received letters also are encouraged to submit an application. Sunday, Dec. 31 is the deadline for organizations to respond.

“We invite nonprofit charities and or-

ganizations to fill out the paperwork so we can develop our list and print our Adoption Forms. The Duck Race Festival Committee is planning an exciting festival, but we need a large and diverse group of beneficiaries to have a successful event,” Rosenbaum said.

Once nonprofit charities and organizations are identified as beneficiaries, they can launch their adoption sales campaigns. Sales will be conducted through the Duck Race website, Duck Race Facebook page and the traditional paper Adoption Form. The Duck Race Festival committee encourages beneficiary groups to use their websites, social media and email to extend their sales reach beyond the local community. In 2017, ducks were adopted by residents of Canada, Costa Rica and the North Pole!

The Duck Race Festival will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018. Exciting major prizes are planned, in addition to hundreds of popular merchant-donated certificates. The 2017 event returned $118,500 to 68 area organizations and groups. Beneficiaries receive $19 of every $20 Adoption Form sold.

Organizations will be selected for the

2018 Duck Race Festival based on the following criteria: 1. Previous adherence to expectations of being involved in the Duck Race.

2. The organization has a local presence and is of benefit to the local community.

Organizations and associations may either hold a valid 501(c)3 or 501(c)4 tax status with the US Internal Revenue Service or are deemed to benefit the local community.

3. The organization agrees to sell a minimum of $400 in duck Adoptions.

4. The organization is encouraged to participate in a Bond Park activity on May 5, 2018 by staffing a booth, sharing information about the organization, selling Adoptions, and offering an interactive activity for festival guests.

“We hope to hear from groups that have never participated as well as those that have been helped by the race in the past 29 years. The Duck Race Festival is a great community event, and being part of it can be fun and profitable for our beneficiaries,” said Larry Williams, Duck Race Festival Organizations Committee Chairperson. “Let’s make 2018 a record year for our non-profit charities and organizations!”

Back by popular demand, the League has invited representatives from our U.S. Senators and Representative’s offices to join the League of Women Voters of Estes Park on Wednesday, November 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Ave., for an informative meeting called Citizenship 102 and the public is encouraged to attend.

We plan to review the most effective communication channels we should be using to inform ourselves of major public policy issues and how to effectively share our opinions with our elected officials. We will also be expanding the conversation to include questions on specific issues that affect our community and citizens that our Representatives are tackling in Washington.

The Art Center is pleased to announce their upcoming exhibition “A New Beginning� featuring the oil paintings of Estes Park artist Bill Fritz. This featured artist show will celebrate the show opening with a reception at the Art Center Friday, November 17 from 5:00- 7:00 p.m. This show is sponsored by Alice and Larry League. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the show and reception.

Bill Fritz is a Midwestern advertising executive and photographer turned Colorado oil painter. Fritz, whose heart and home had always been in the Midwest, and who believed photography was to be his only lifelong hobby, made a major turnaround by becoming a westerner and an oil painter.

A native of Mitchell, South Dakota, Bill Fritz began his career as a business administration major at the University of Nebraska, but after a stint in the Air Force, he graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles with a major in Advertising Design. After graduating, Bill moved back to the Midwest where he spent his career as Executive Art Director and Creative Director for large advertising agencies in Minneapolis and Cedar Rapids. Some of the accounts he worked on include Pillsbury, General Mills, Eli Lilly (Élan of Products), Pioneer Seeds, John Deere and many others. He won numerous creative

Estes Park Oil Painter Bill Fritz Featured At Art Center awards in both print and television advertising.

Bill and his wife Dana moved to Estes Park twenty years ago. Estes Park is where he developed his interest in oil painting, taking workshops from artists including Cathy Goodale, Karol Mack, Robert Johnson, Jim Biggers and Margaret Jensen. Cathy Goodale was the first, and a comment she made during his first workshop was a quote that has forever stuck with Bill‌"Painting is pushing and pulling a lot of paint." Bill thinks he might be getting the idea, and he believes it is true‌the trick is learning when to stop pushing or pulling.

Bill’s work was accepted into the "Lines

into Shapes" national juried exhibition in 2012 when he was awarded First Place in Oil Painting. He has also won both “Best of Show� and an “Honorable Mention� in the Cultural Arts Council’s annual fall show.

Bill has discovered that he has a passion for oil painting. His subjects range from landscapes and still life to character studies.

He has sat on various international forums like Climate Change in Bolivia and the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between USA and Canada under the Boundary Waters Treaty Act of 1906.

Riverspointe Spa Hosts Skin Analysis With Revered Mineral Makeup Line jane iredale On Wednesday, November 15, Riverspointe Spa, Estes Park’s only full service spa, will be hosting an exclusive skin event with internationally revered mineral makeup line jane iredale. “We are very excited to bring this fun event to our Estes Park locals,� said spa owner and director Melissa Martin. “As we all know, skincare in our dry mountain climate can be a challenge, and jane iredale has so many wonderful products with clean ingredients that help our skin feel its best.�

We had a packed agenda that night starting with Eric Adams with the Estes Park School District Board. He gave us a brief overview of Ballot 3A. Next Larry Leaming with Estes Park Medical Center (EPMC) gave a status update on the hospital activities and finances. It was comforting to hear of the stability and progress the hospital has made.

Following Larry was Michael Moon with the Childcare Services Committee of the Estes Park EDC. Michael addressed the crowd with information about the childcare services available, the assessment currently being done in the Estes Park area and what will happen next.

Lastly, Al Milano with Rocky Mountain Performing Arts Center (RMPAC) informed the group about some significant changes to the project that make it better for the community and justify the financial investment for donors. Very exciting!

This week there are three new young kittens, Foxy, Johnny and Tommy who are about two months old. They are playful, curious and fun!

Charlotte is about a year and a half old.

She loves kids and people. Charlotte will be best as an only dog in her new home.

She is kennel and house trained.

Bugsy is about five years old. He is a great kitty who is loving, friendly and social. He is fine with dogs but not overly friendly with other cats.

Pebbles is an all black, male kitten that is about three and a half months old. He is a bit shy yet, but very sweet and playful.

Momentous, First-Time Ever Performing Arts Meet Up By: Pat Nelson

The first gathering of Estes Park theater supporters, the Estes Park Repertoire Theater Company (EPRTC) and the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies (FAGR)

took place at the treasure-chocked Art Center of Estes Park (upper Stanley village) on November 5th. The organizations' board members, actors, artists, musicians, tech and set crew folks met to offer ideas for a stronger local theater community.

In addition to meeting fellow theater supporters, attendees weighed in on five important questions for the organizations and the performing arts community at large. These questions were posted on display boards around the gallery and provided opportunities for people to offer comments and suggestions.

How can [EP community theater] improve? A number of responses stated the need for a "real" theater, "one theater," and "a consistent venue." One participant suggested the auto mall as a venue alternative and recommended asking for town support to this end. Another suggestion--given our lack of venue options--proffered, "Being open to live theatre (sic) ‌in non-traditional spaces."

Performing scenes for the public--at the library, Bond Park or wherever--to get people "interested/excited" about attending full productions was mentioned.

And others recommended getting "your name out to different kinds of people" in town by advertising via a booth at the Farmers' Market."

Several attendees thought a central community calendar featuring a year's productions would prevent performance date overlaps and would minimize too many similar productions. The EPRTC and FAGR informally communicate now, but a comprehensive calendar could do more. For example, it could provide a basis for season ticket options.

It could also allow for "Groupon theater/hotel/dinner packages".

Other ideas included more consistency in tech (light/sound) management, the need for more directors (while praising Chris Wood's service), being open to

new unfamiliar actors, being "risky and trying "something unusual," offering more family theater, "being realistic" about local resources, and "two words 'Rock 'n Roll' (or is that 3?)". And, of course, many felt that the town needed

to "REALLY support the arts." Hear, hear.

Attendees were also asked to categorize theater genres according to their appeal (high, medium, maybe, and umm, think no). Those genres moved into the high appeal category included musical theater, comedy, drama, followed by improvised theater. Historical theatre and tragedy were ranked next. Melodrama had some appeal but Rich and Kay Mitchell and Larry Tyson felt that a melodrama every other year, especially one customized to the Estes Park experience, was sufficient. Fantasy theater which is based on a fictional universe and may include magic or the supernatural (i. e. A Midsummer Night's Dream & Alice in Wonderland) was seen as having medium appeal. Youth theater (surprisingly) and choral readings were placed in the "maybe" category, and puppetry and mime landed in the "no" category.

The third question asked participants to name a production or two that would be well received by local audiences.

Many responses named musicals such as "Annie Get Your Gun," "L'il Abner,"

"Chicago," "Beauty and the Beast," "Oklahoma," "Urinetown," "Dogfight," and others. Several suggested religion-based works like "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Godspell," and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." Comedy titles included "Church Basement Ladies," "The Odd Couple," and "Miss Firecracker." Traditional works such as "Cinderella," "Little Women," "Macbeth," and other Shakespeare plays were also mentioned. Two people, who are cognizant of casting issues, recommended "A Walk in the Woods" and "The Last Five Years."

Some felt that sketch comedy and British farces would have great appeal, while others suggested improv (again), old time radio shows, and an a cappella group. Another attendee thought more original works by local playwrights would draw audiences.

One very interesting idea was to follow the library's One Book, One Valley concept and have the community all read the same play; after which auditions could be held. The thought being

asked for ideas to attract more actors.

The Repertoire and Guild welcome everyone to auditions regardless of experience but due to busy schedules, sometimes plays are not fully cast. Theater supporters suggested that more actors could be found by offering acting classes, investigating home-schooled youth, extensively using social media, and finding lively directors who respect time commitments. Another person thought that a consistent yearly schedule and an audition process with integrity would attract more candidates. The second section asked for names of people who might be great additions to casts and/or crews. Named residents may now hear from these organizations.

And finally, a question was posed as to how the EPRTC and FAGR might work together. Suggestions ranged from the concrete (sharing costumes and storage, building sets together, doing market research and advertising each other's productions) to the theoretical. A thoughtprovoking question posted asked, "What is the advantage of two organizations?

What are the pitfalls?" The Repertoire Theatre historically produces smaller works, while the Fine Arts Guild produces both small cast plays and larger properties like musicals. The organizations might find an in-depth discussion valuable for clarifying other differences and addressing the question two performing arts organizations' pitfalls.

Again, both organizations sincerely thank the Art Center of Estes Park board members and Vickie Mastron for the use of the gallery and their care in helping with the gathering. The three non-profits worked together well. An arts community is strengthened by unity; all involved benefit.

Colorado Life Magazine Features Its Hometown Of Estes Park Locally published Colorado Life Magazine shows its hometown pride in its latest issue with a feature all about life in Estes Park. To mark the occasion, the statewide magazine is hosting an open house at its Estes Park office on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 11.

The 10-page story “Estes Park: Living on the Front Step of Heaven” by Estes Park writer Lisa Hutchins appears in Colorado Life’s November/December 2017 issue. The accompanying photographs of Estes Park in all its winter glory were taken by Colorado Life publisher and Estes Park resident Chris Amundson. Among the beautiful images are two-page spreads depicting the YMCA of the Rockies and the Stanley Hotel, as well as photos of the Park Theater, Lake Estes and more.

The entertaining story paints a slice-oflife portrait of Estes Park, featuring scenes that show some of the things locals love best about their town – or, in the case of the infamous elk jams, some of the things that drive them a little crazy. The article also highlights the town’s resilience in the wake of the 2013 flood. Local music icon Cowboy Brad Fitch, quoted in the article, said it best: “There’s nothing that can compare to Estes Park.”

A sidebar to the main article tells the story of Estes Park nature photographer Erik Stensland, owner of the Images of Rocky Mountain National Park gallery.

“I feel like we got the lucky draw to get

to live here,” Stensland said in the article.

Chris Amundson and his wife, Angela, founded Colorado Life Magazine in Estes Park six years ago, and the magazine has published features on many other small towns since then. “We’ve always wanted to write a big story on Estes Park,” Amundson said. “We held off until we knew we could do justice to Colorado Life’s incredible hometown, because our friends and neighbors would never let us hear the end of it if we didn’t.”

To celebrate the Estes Park story, Colorado Life is hosting an open house from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 11, at its office at 1692 Big Thompson Ave., in the building next to the Hunter’s Chop House restaurant. Estes Park residents can meet Colorado Life’s writers and photographers, and perhaps give some suggestions about what the magazine should cover the next time it features Estes Park.

The Estes Park story appears in the November/December 2017 issue of Colorado Life Magazine. The issue also includes articles on heli-skiing at Silverton Mountain, holiday lights in Denver, a 1928 bank robbery in Lamar that was the first case the FBI solved using a single fingerprint, and many other stories.

The 5th annual US Trail Running Conference was held October 11-14, at the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, and provided three and a half days of presentations, networking, vendor displays, morning trail runs, and panel discussions that inspired and educated. The first two and a half days contained sessions focused on content for trail race directors. The final day was geared toward trail runners.

Sessions for trail race directors covered subjects that surveys had highlighted were critical components to creating successful events for the race directors, and race experiences for the runners.

Subjects covered ranged from course design, sustainability issues, course markings, volunteers, safety, insurance, building your event personality, and developing a trail running community.

Expert panelists represented trail races from across the United States, including several in Colorado. More than 50 race directors attended from 20 states, as well as Canada, and the Azores, representing a total of more than 100,000 runners.

For trail runners, there was a fun run each morning, with demo shoes provided by Inov-8 and Altra, as well as interactive sessions with expert panels that covered trail shoe development, healthy nutrition and hydration, how to train and avoid injuries, and building a trail running community. Presentations from the American Trail Running Association included technology trends and information on the growth of trail running, both in the United States and the rest of the World.

Estes Park Medical Center are a Conference partner sponsor, and enabled the initial Conference to take place in 2013.

Dr. F. Dumont delivered a presentation at this year’s Conference on aid station standards for races. The American Trail Running Association (ATRA) plan to publish in the coming year a document regarding Dumont’s proposed standards.

“The need for standardization is to simplify logistics and reassure race directors,” said Dr. Dumont, who welcomed input from the attendees.

ATRA will also be creating a survey to gather additional feedback to help sup-

port the standards. In addition, Dr. Dumont also presented to trail runners on innovations in wellness, covering how trail running has helped the health of the nation.

For the first time in the five-year history of the Conference the 2018 event will be staged outside of Estes Park. Next years US Trail Running Conference will take place in San Luis Obsipo, CA, on August 28-31. The Conference will be held in partnership with Race SLO, and the SLO Ultra, and planning is underway to continue the organic growth of the event, and bring the content to an even larger audience in 2018.

“Having partnered with Active at Altitude’s Terry Chiplin since the inception of the conference, this new model to move the event to different areas of the country is a fantastic and positive change. In looking at new venues, San Luis Obispo is an ideal choice and all of us at ATRA are excited to experience SLO,” says Nancy Hobbs, Executive Director ATRA. US Trail Running Conference Event Director and owner of Active at Altitude, Terry Chiplin, stated: ”I am excited to be a part of the continued growth of the US Trail Running Conference in partnership with the American Trail Running Association. The trail running weekend was rounded out with the Estes Trail Ascent on Sunday October 15. The popular trail race, produced by the Estes Park Running Club, offered runners thrilling four mile or 6.75 mile distance options, finishing at Ravencrest Chalet on Pole Hill.

“Survey Says...” Your Feedback Is In The results are in. Your feedback will now help us chart a course for the Estes Valley Library’s future.

This summer, we invited you to participate in the Library’s Patron Satisfaction Survey. Building upon previous survey efforts, we asked you to tell us how we’re doing in key service areas—both in levels of importance, and for those using these services, your level of satisfaction.

The Library encouraged participation through its many publicity channels. The results were collected and compiled by the independent firm, Equation Research.

We’re happy to report that the data has been organized and is ready to share.

First—a note on participation. A survey is most informative when many people respond. We received an impressive 796 responses, a very strong sampling for our community size.

A huge thanks goes to many local businesses, who offered participation incen-

tives through randomly-drawn gift baskets. Further gratitude goes to the Library’s Friends & Foundation, which provided funding for the study.

“The Estes Valley Library performs very well across the attributes measured in this study,” reported Equation Research. “A majority of the constituents are satisfied with the library’s performance on all 11 attributes that apply to them.”

Two attributes scored highest: the staff, and the feeling of being welcomed at the Library. We’ll strive to keep both of those attributes strong.

There are opportunities for us to improve. For Teen Services and English Language Learner services, levels of importance ranked above levels of satisfaction, calling for additional attention in the coming years. Financial Literacy results, meanwhile, showed that the level of satisfaction now exceeds the level of importance, indicating we’ve met many

existing needs in this area, allowing attention to shift toward online access to these successful training materials.

We received hundreds of open-ended comments, too. Survey says! More physical books, digital books, author visits, literary events, programs for young minds, and additional services for lifelong learners.

The survey provided new insights into Library communication channels—asking where you currently receive information about activities, and where you would most prefer to receive information. The biggest trend? eMail. Newspaper articles and the Library website were close behind as preferred sources.

All data collected through the 2017 Survey is vital, and we are now implement-

ing plans to integrate these results into service priorities for 2018. While still fulfilling the objectives in our 2015-2020 Comprehensive Plan, the survey results will help us sharpen the outcomes for those goals through this clarified understanding.

Concert To Celebrate National Parks: Gigi Love Performs November 17

The community is invited to a special concert featuring national touring and recording artist Gigi Love, whose songs especially celebrate America’s national parks. This free one-hour event will take place on Friday, November 17 at 1:00 p.m. at the Estes Park High School Auditorium. While no advance tickets are required, attendees are encouraged to register in advance at estesvalleylibrary.org to assure available seating. This event is being hosted in partnership with the Estes Valley Library, the Estes Park School District, and Nick Mollé Productions.

A singer-songwriter, storyteller, and entertainer, Love was born in Arlington, Texas and began playing guitar and singing at age 7. From 2015 through 2017, Love visited about two dozen national parks where she gathered notes, learned the history, absorbed the surroundings, and wrote songs for many of those parks. Several of the songs are included on Love’s full-length album “National Parks Centennial Songs.” This al-

bum and many songs have charted in the Top 100 from the Folk DJ stations as reported by “Acoustic Outpost” during 2016- 2017.

As the National Park Service’s first Trails & Rails Troubadour, Gigi took part in four tours in the summer and fall of 2017, visiting and performing in several of the parks and on multiple Amtrak trains, where she often performs on long-distance rail journeys.

Among her many performing credits are concerts opening for the Dave Matthews Band at the Columbia River Gorge, as well as playing for the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Closing Ceremonies.

The November 17 community concert has been made possible through the support of the three community partners, as well as support from Estes Performs.

It’s Bright Christmas Season Once Again

Estes Park Bright Christmas is celebrating its 33rd year of coming alongside families with children who need help with Christmas. We are currently gearing up for the 2017 Program.

Because of the wonderful support we get from this community, over the years we have been able to help many families give their children a brighter Christmas.

Families in need have been “adopted” by other families, businesses, churches, clubs and individuals for Christmas gifts. With the funds that are donated, we purchase food, cleaning supplies and personal care items for each family.

Bright Christmas values the many community partnerships that contribute to our program, including Plum Creek Shoe stores, Estes Park Center (YMCA of the Rockies), and the Estes Park 18 Hole Golf Course staff and facilities.

Sign-up for the Bright Christmas program will be held at Crossroads Ministry on Wednesdays (next one Nov. 15) between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. or on Saturdays (Nov. 11, Nov. 18) between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Our representatives will be at Crossroads on these dates to help with the paperwork. This is an anonymous program and only your children’s first names will be known to the sponsors.

Rocky Mountain Flycasters Receive $2,300 Embrace A Stream Grant

Funds will be used to install a learning center on Big Thompson River The Rocky Mountain Flycasters Chapter of Trout Unlimited has received a $2,300 grant for a Big Thompson River Learning Station. The grant comes through Trout Unlimited’s nationwide Embrace A Stream grant program. The funds will be used to install a learning center on the Big Thompson River to inform visitors of the complex ecological systems the river supports.

“We’re thrilled to be able to do more great work teaching about and improving the Big Thompson River thanks to this grant, ” said Coy Wylie of Loveland, Rocky Mountain Flycasters Chapter President. “With the help of this grant, we will engage volunteers from our community to work on a river we all, residents and anglers alike, know and love. ” Both the Rocky Mountain Flycasters and the Alpine Anglers chapter of Estes Park have also made cash donations to the fund.

The Big Thompson River Learning Station Project will install panels to inform visitors of how the Big Thompson ecosystem works, how the trout populations rely on its ecological features, and TU’s role in protecting and restoring the river. Many community members, along with tourists and recreationists, are interested in the river and its ecology, but there is currently no easy way for them to learn about it. This project will fill this crucial knowledge gap.

The Learning Station will be installed at Mile Marker 72 on Highway 34, the site of the fishing pier destroyed by the 2013 flood. The pier will be rebuilt with partial funding by a grant from Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Fishing Is Fun program. Volunteers from the Rocky Mountain Flycasters and Alpine Anglers will provide volunteer labor for both projects. “Members from both Rocky Mountain Flycasters and Alpine Anglers helped build the original pier and maintain it after less severe flood events over the years, ” says Wylie. “So this entire project is very dear to our hearts. ” The Big Thompson Watershed Coalition (BTWC) will serve as grant administrator and project manager for both projects. Rocky Mountain Flycasters was one of the founding partners of the BTWC following the 2013 floods.

Embrace A Stream is a matching grant program administered by Trout Unlimited that provides funds to local chapters and state councils for coldwater fisheries conservation. Since its inception in 1975, the grant program has funded more than 1,000 individual projects for a total of

$4.4 million in direct cash grants. Local chapters and councils contributed an additional $13 million in cash and in-kind services to EAS funded projects, for a total investment of more than $17 million.

“We’re thrilled to support the Rocky Mountain Flycasters Chapter in its efforts to improve such an important local trout stream, ” said Russ Meyer, chair of the Embrace A Stream grants committee, a group of Trout Unlimited volunteer leaders from across the country.

“This year’s grant applications were extremely competitive, but the proposal for the Big Thompson River stood out. ” Along with the $2,300 grant, the Rocky Mountain Flycasters Chapter will also be entered in the Embrace A Stream Challenge, a week-long online fundraising contest running Nov. 6-12 and sponsored by Orvis and Trout Unlimited to provide an additional $50,000 in cash prizes to these important conservation and education projects. To help the Rocky Mountain Flycasters Chapter win additional funds for the Big Thompson River Learning Station Project visit www.embraceastream.org from Nov. 612 and make a donation of as little as $10 to help unlock prizes ranging from $250 to $5,000.

Tabor Shay Recen Tabor Shay Recen, 33 passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 29, 2017 at his long time Estes Park home. He was born on June 3, 1984 In Denver Colorado to his parents, Paul “King” Recen and Sandra Recen (Melton).

He lived in Denver with his parents and brother Dillon until the age of eight, at which time the family relocated to Estes Park, Colorado where his heart remained until his passing.

He graduated from Estes Park High School in 2002. Tabor went to work as a sheet metal worker for his Father’s family business, Ozark Mechanical in Longmont where he was able to work closely with both his father and brother until the business closed in 2008. He then went to work at Commercial Systems Integrators where he worked with the installation of low voltage controls for building automation systems. Upon leaving CSI he became a machinist for Aerocom Industries where he remained employed until his passing. Throughout his entire working career Tabor had an exceptionally high aptitude for making mechanical repairs and was naturally gifted at working with his hands.

Tabor had many passions in his life,

but none greater than his love for music. He taught himself to play the drums at age 13 and later became the drummer for Royal Blue where he played alongside King, Dillon and Jake Spencer for many years. Eventually his focus and passion turned to playing the guitar where he rapidly excelled. Similar to his father, it was hard to find Tabor without a guitar tucked under his arm.

He also found joy in many other interests including smoking barbecue, snowboarding, tinkering with his Mustang, watching movies, attending Denver Bronco games and spending time with his friends & family.

Tabor was preceded in death by his father, King Recen. He is survived by his mother Sam Recen, brother Dillon Recen, Sister-in-law Meredith Recen, Nephew Harrison Recen, several aunts, uncles, cousins and many great friends. He is also survived by his true love, Kylene Newman with whom he shared the joy of starting a family.

Beatrice Coleman Beatrice Coleman was born on December 18, 1926 in New York, NY to Abraham and Gussie Budnick, two Jewish immigrants from Poland and France.

She graduated from Garfield Memorial Hospital, School of Nursing, in Washington DC in 1949 and spent her career as an Operating Room nurse. She spent most of her career at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, as the Director of the Operating Room. She was very involved in the Association of Operating Room Nurses. She loved collecting antiques and old children’s books.

In 2008 she moved to Estes Park to be close to her daughter and son-in-law, Alison and Steve Gilbert. She spent her time in Estes volunteering at PPLC, the library, Riverplace, and Caring Pregnancy and spent many hours with the women of Harvest House.

She became a believer of Jesus in 2012

and spent many Sunday mornings at Rocky Mountain Church. Most people knew her by her beautiful smile with eyes that sparkled with the light of her Messiah.

Bea is survived by her two children and their spouses Alison & Steve Gilbert of Estes Park and Evan & Randi Coleman of Santa Rosa, California; four grandchildren Nicole White, Erin Ardanuy, and Zachary and Alex Coleman; and two great grandchildren due in early 2018.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy Coleman, and brother Milton Budnick, and her parents.

Bea passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on November 6th in the home of her daughter under the loving care of Ann Jansen and Hospice. We are thankful for the many people in Estes Park who cared for her and loved her. Please visit www.allnutt.com to leave a message for the family.
