Spring Snowstorm On Wednesday, Estes Park received 12 inches of heavy, wet snow! Despite the beauty of it all and the students getting another snow day, this elk seems to represent what many of us thought of our spring snowstorm and the resulting communication failure.

Major Communication Outage Due To Weather On Wednesday evening, the Estes Valley and Glen Haven experienced a major communication outage due to weather. This outage included internet services, some land line telephone service and local 9-1-1 communications.

At the time of this paper going to press, crews were working on resolving this major outage.

Taking Action On Attainable Housing It shouldn’t be big news to anyone that attainable housing is an issue here in Estes Park. Housing is expensive and there is limited availability for most working people here in the Valley. This is a major problem for full-time residents as well as seasonal workers who support our economy during the summer months. Ask any employer out there and they will tell you that both the lack of housing and the cost of housing are major obstacles to hiring and keeping good employees. As one of the largest employers in town, the Town of Estes Park is no exception. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve tried to fill critical positions in all our departments only to have people back out once they see how expensive it is to live here. This is a problem for all mountain destination communities, and it’s beginning to be an issue for our Front Range neighbors as well. In the recently completed Economic Development Strategy report, attainable housing was identified as a key threat to the health of the local economy.

Last month the Estes Park Housing Authority released an excellent housing needs assessment for the Estes Park area.

The full study is available online www.esteshousing.org.

This report did more than just quantify the problem, it also recommends 11 key implementation strategies to address housing needs in our community. It’s very clear from the report that this isn’t just a Town government problem. Several of the recommendations are the responsibility of Town government to address, such as:

• Adopt Accessory Dwelling Unit regulations for workforce housing • Amend Town Code to allow and encourage workforce housing • Utilize Town-owned land for workforce housing Other recommendations require the private sector to step up and help with the situation: • Guarantee that new development provides workforce housing • Encourage downtown housing • Support and expand employer assisted housing efforts • Continue apartment development and redevelopment All these recommendations need to be coordinated into a community-wide strategic effort.

Housing problems are like the weather -we all talk about it but nobody does anything about it. Well, we are working to break that log jam.

Recently the Mayor and I met with the Housing Authority Board of Directors to outline a plan to take the recommendations of the Housing Needs Assessment and bring them to the community for implementation.

The Housing Authority and the Town, in partnership, are working to put together a team to develop a simple and practical plan to move these recommendations forward. This team will be made up of the Town, the Housing Authority, representatives of small and large employers, builders and developers. This isn’t another study

group, or advisory board.

We want this to be a roll up your sleeves, and let’s get moving type of a group. We plan to start work next month.

From the Town’s perspective, we are moving already. We presented a change in the land use code to the Planning Commission last month to make it easier for employers to provide seasonal housing for their and their neighboring businesses workers. We will be looking at other parts of our code that are currently providing barriers to folks developing workforce housing. We will also be looking at what types of incentives the Town provide, such as density bonuses, fees or other incentives to make it more attractive to develop and build workforce housing. I’ve charged staff to be creative and remain open to new ideas and new concepts in housing.

As housing becomes tighter down in the Valley, commuting won’t solve the problem, and as the flood showed us, we are at the greatest risk when we need professionals the most. Every vibrant and viable community needs a vibrant and viable workforce. We need nurses, police officers, emergency dispatchers and teachers. We need cooks and servers. We need store clerks and mechanics. We need plumbers, carpenters, painters and electricians. We need accountants, bookkeepers and yes, we even need lawyers.

We need housing and it’s up to all of us to stop talking and do something about it.

The Town of Estes Park's Finance Officer, Steve McFarland, has resigned from his position after 11 years. McFarland noted, "While it is a difficult decision to leave the Town, I've been presented with a great opportunity to expand my skills for another organization -- and the change will be beneficial for my family, as well." McFarland has accepted a similar position with the City of Lafayette, Colorado, beginning late April. He has been a resident of Estes Park since 1985.

McFarland continues, "I've been blessed to serve with an incredible group of people at the Town. Their work ethic, integrity and passion for the community are an inspiration that I will carry with me to my new job."

Town Administrator Frank Lancaster commented, "As the Town faced many opportunities and challenges over the past decade, Steve's sound financial management and advice ensured the successful delivery of all the Town's services to its customers." He continued, "His contributions to the Town and our community cannot be overemphasized.

This is a great professional opportunity for Steve and the fact that another larger community actively sought him out is a compliment to his reputation in the profession. We wish him success and he will be greatly missed."

Every year of McFarland's tenure, the Town and McFarland's team in the Fi-

nance Department have received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the non-profit Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

McFarland's last day with the Town of Estes Park is anticipated in midApril. The Town will begin the recruitment process for a new Finance Officer in March.

It probably raises some eyebrows when we hear someone suggest “Let’s go back a hundred years . . .” and we find ourselves in the century when most of us were born. Nineteen something or other! Feel old??? So, what was life like a hundred years ago? Quieter? More peaceful? Not the hustle and bustle and noise of today?

Ah, for the good old days. Hmmm.

The good old days of nineteen sixteen.

The beginning decades of the twentieth century. We had mastered the continent between the two great oceans. We were a world power . . . certainly dominant in the western hemisphere. We had been a nation of barely five million when born, but now we were accepted as a world power and with a population of over seventy-five million. Our standard of living compared favorably with that of any other country.

True we were not a paradise. Industries flourished, but there was a cost. Much profit was gained by the employment of women and children in factories, where they were of course paid less than men would have expected. There was a great increase in wealth but it benefitted a very small segment of the population.

Local and state governments --- and even the federal should be mentioned --did little, if anything, to meliorate conditions for another two decades. and few of those in power admitted to wrong doing. Indeed, though the latter could admit to what they were doing, they quite likely little thought they were doing anything wrong.

In 1912 Massachusetts had created a commission to establish minimum wage schedules for women and children, but eleven years later the Supreme Court would rule such laws illegal because they interfered with an individual’s liberty of contract. Back in 1912 it took the Democratic party 46 ballots to nominate Woodrow Wilson --- legal name Thomas Woodrow Wilson --- to be its candidate for President, yet in the fall presidential election he was overwhelmingly elected the country’s twenty-eighth President. Four years later when he ran for re-election it was widely expected in political circles that he would be defeated, but when Wilson barely carried the popular vote in California its votes in the Electoral College gave him victory.

The big news back in that second decade of the twentieth century was, however, made abroad. On the night of 4 August 1914 German troops crossed the border of Belgium and began what history calls World War One. Here in the United States eleven days later we formally opened the Panama Canal. The international concerns of our federal government had been primarily with western hemisphere countries, particularly Mexico, but that was about to expand. When it started we tried to be neutral about the European conflict, but that quickly became impossible. Actually our first dispute was not with Germany but with Britain, which was allied with France. British control of the seas and

blockade of German ports resulted in confiscation of cargoes of neutral ships which just might, albeit indirectly, have been destined for German ports.

Looking back on the war from a century later it is easy to understand why British control of the seas meant they could obtain supplies from the United States and Germany couldn’t. As for the Germans, they reacted by relying on mines planted around British ports, and on submarines. Some historians have written that what brought the United States eventually into World War One was --- the German submarine.

From the start of the war it was evident where most American feelings lay. The first and second generation Americans of German ancestry may have sympathized with the land from which their ancestors came, but the commonality of the English language doubtless greatly influenced where most Americans stood.

Besides, we were both democracies, which Germany certainly was not. Our friendship with France went back to the American revolution. Our school children learned of Lafayette. True, we were an independent country, but considering our customs, language, literature, and laws we were tied to the British empire.

If there was any single event that had determined the future role of the United States in the war it had taken place on 7 May 1915. That day the famous tourist ship Lusitania was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland. Over a thousand passengers died, of whom 128 were Americans. True the German embassy in Washington had warned against sailing on the ship because it carried war supplies intended for the British and French forces. That could have been the time for us to enter the war, but on the one hand we were not militarily prepared, and on the other neither the President nor the public were mentally prepared for us to do so.

A hundred years ago President Wilson, sensing the horror and destruction, called for a “peace without victory” and a conference to end the war. The participants --- even the British --- were not interested. And so the war continued. We strengthened our military and naval forces. Recognizing that Wilson’s efforts at mediation were going nowhere and that the British blockade of their ports impeded their war efforts, the Germans resumed unrestricted submarine warfare. Their leadership decided that they had to risk the entrance of the United States into the war on the British side, and early in 1917 informed the Americans of their intent to sink all merchant vessels within a zone around the British Isles. If they misjudged at all it was in the belief that U.S. participation by naval and military assistance would have little influence on the war’s outcome. Of course,time proved them wrong.

“Keeping Bears In Mind” Benefit Concert Bear Education Benefit Concert May 7 The Estes Park News is excited to be producing a bear education benefit concert called “Keeping Bears In Mind.” The purpose of the concert is to raise funds to educate and create awareness of the issues that Estes Valley businesses and residents face with bears in our area. Bears need to be kept wild and we can help by being responsible with our trash and our birdfeeders, outdoor grills, compost piles, etc. By not feeding them, we will help to resolve these issues, thus saving the lives of our resident bears.

This concert will star Estes Park’s very own Cowboy Brad Fitch and feature his TropiCowboy Band. Brad has performed and is known worldwide not only for his original music, rock, country and folk hit songs but also he is one of the most popular John Denver tribute artists in the United States.

The concert will be held on Saturday, May 7th, at the new Events Complex.

Bears Beginning To Come Out Of Hibernation Time be bear aware!

Estes Park resident Chris Hess got the surprise of his life last week. He heard noises upstairs at his home and thought his cats were running around, knocking things over. He decided to investigate after the sounds coming from the upper floor got a little too loud for a couple of rowdy cats.

When Chris got upstairs he was shocked to see a large, black bear standing in the middle of the room.

The bear had gained entry by way of an unlocked door which had a lever handle.

Most bears can’t open a round doorknob

type handle, but the lever type, if unlocked, are easily pushed down by any crafty bruin.

While inside Chris’ home, the bear didn’t do any damage, or take any food which is probably due to the fact that he had just emerged from hibernation and it takes the bear’s a few days before their digestive system is back to fully- functioning.

To get the bear to leave, Chris said he yelled and screamed and the bear ran down the hall, opened the door and ran away.

Chris said the bear has been back as evidenced by the muddy paw prints and scratches on the outside of the house. He had no idea the bears would be out of hibernation this early, so the bear caught him by surprise. He has learned his lesson to always keep his doors locked and to do frequent trash runs to keep the bear from coming back. These lessons will now help save this bear’s life.

Human-bear conflicts are a fact of life in the Estes Valley, but with some simple actions, residents of bear country can help to significantly reduce those conflicts.

The biggest issue in conflict situations is the availability of human sources of food -- garbage, pet food, livestock food, compost piles, bird feeders, chicken pens, etc. Bears have a phenomenal sense of smell and can pick up odors of food sources from

miles away.

Bears receive a big calorie reward if they get into something like pet food, or bird seed or leftover pizza, and once they get a taste they quickly become habituated to human food and conflicts start. When that happens, things usually don't go well for the bear. Wildlife officials no longer relocate bears, any bears deemed dangerous will be destroyed.

Estes residents play a major role in keeping bears wild. Please, follow these tips to keep bears out of trouble and to reduce conflicts: • Obtain a bear-resistant trash can or dumpster. Keep garbage in a wellsecured location; and only put out garbage on the morning of pickup.

• Clean garbage cans regularly to eliminate food odors. If you don't have secure storage, put food scraps and items that might become smelly into the freezer. Then put them in the trash on pick-up day.

• Don't leave pet food or feeding bowls outside.

• Attract birds naturally to your yard or garden with flowers and water features.

For those who use bird feeders, suspend them high above the ground so that they're inaccessible to bears; clean up beneath them every day and bring them in at night.

• Tightly secure any compost piles. Bears are attracted to the scent of rotting food.

• If you keep chickens or other small livestock, build a secure enclosure and bring the animals inside at night. Clean up pens regularly to reduce odors.

• Keep the bottom floor windows of your house and garage doors closed when you're not at home. Lock your home and car doors.

• Never intentionally feed bears or other wildlife. It's illegal and dangerous.

April 5 Municipal Election Update Where to find preliminary results the night of April 5 The Town of Estes Park will hold the next regular Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. as a mail ballot-only election. Ballots were mailed to all registered voters March 14. Absentee ballots can be requested through April 1. Voters may cast ballots now through 7 p.m. April 5 at the Town Clerk’s office. The Larimer County offices on Brodie Avenue are not accepting ballots for the Town of Estes Park Municipal Election.

All ballots must be received by 7 p.m.

April 5, when the polls close, in order to be counted – postmarks do not count.

Swearing-in of newly elected Town Trustees and Mayor will be at the April 26 Town Board Meeting.

Mayor Pinkham and Trustee Ericson are term-limited, Trustee John Phipps will not seek reelection, and Trustee Norris is eligible to run for an additional four year term. Joint Public Meeting On Vacation Rentals In The Estes Valley Plan Area The Larimer County Board of County Commissioners and Estes Park Board of Trustees will hold a public meeting on the topic of Vacation Rentals in the Estes Valley Plan Area. This meeting will be a formal public hearing where you can give your thoughts and comments directly to all three Commissioners.

Following a staff presentation and public comment period, both boards will take action on a draft ordinance recommended by the Estes Valley Planning Commission.

Town’s Annual Water Main Flushing Takes Place April 19 Through April The Town of Estes Park Water Division will conduct the annual water main flushing program from Tuesday, April 19 through Friday, April 22 and again Tuesday, April 26 through Friday, April 29.

The flushing improves water quality and clarity by creating a higher than normal flow through the distribution system.

This flow helps to clear the pipes of the iron oxide buildup resulting from corrosion of older steel pipes. Water customers may notice discoloration of their water for a short period of time.

The rusty-looking water can leave iron stains in clothing and is not aesthetically-pleasing, but it is safe to use. The best solution for customers is to avoid using water, particularly hot water, when crews are flushing in the area. If rusty water is drawn, cold water should be run for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the water clears. If the water does not clear in that time, water should be shut off for about 30 minutes before the process is repeated.

Estes Park Surpasses Strict Federal And State Standards To Provide Customers With High-Quality Drinking Water Frequently Asked Questions about lead testing for drinking water Q 1. With questions across the country about lead in drinking water, should I be concerned about the Town of Estes Park's water quality?

Answer: We're very proud to remind the community that the Town works around-the-clock to provide high-quality water to our customers. We continually surpass strict federal and state standards to provide the very best drinking water possible.

Lead is a common metal found in the environment, and although the main sources of exposure are from lead-based paint and contaminated dust or soil, drinking water can be a possible source of lead exposure. Lead is not found in the Town's source water but gets into the drinking water after the water leaves the treatment plant and comes into contact with household plumbing materials containing lead. These can include lead pipes, solder, faucets, valves and other components containing brass.

By federal law, water utilities like the Town are required to have a corrosion control program to minimize lead in your drinking water. This program began in the late 1980s and involves adding a chemical which coats pipes and plumbing fixtures to prevent water from corroding the metals. This program includes on-going monitoring of the treatment chemicals, the distribution system and households in our community to ensure that the corrosion control is effective.

During annual testing in 2015, we sampled 23 homes built between 1982 and 1986. Homes are tested versus businesses because lead poisoning is a chronic condition that occurs over long periods of time, and most people are drinking water from their homes daily. Federal requirements mandate that we report the value at the 90th percentile, which was 2.3 parts per billion (ppb) of lead. The highest value we saw in all the homes tested in 2015 was 6.5 ppb. Further, 14 of the 23 homes sampled were below the detection limit of 1 ppb. The EPA's action level for lead is 15 ppb. These samples were taken after the water sat undisturbed in the plumbing for at least 6 hours to give the water an opportunity to react -- allowing a "worst case" sce-

nario for our testing.

Q 2. How do I know if water from my tap contains lead? What should I do?

Answer: Because lead is NOT found in the Town's source water NOR in treated water leaving the treatment plants, but is sometimes found in plumbing fixtures in private properties, homeowners or business owners can test and mitigate the concerns themselves. A licensed plumber can inspect fixtures to determine if any lead sources are present, and a state-approved laboratory can test private water services to determine if lead is present in the customer's water.

If testing at a private property shows lead levels of 15 ppb or higher, the EPA recommends taking precautions like flushing the tap for 15-20 seconds, using only cold water for drinking and cooking, and considering purchasing bottled water or a water filter. Flushing the tap is the easiest and most cost effective way to reduce lead if the customer is concerned.

Q 3. Does the Town do anything to help keep lead from leaching into the water?

Answer: The Town's main distribution lines are made of ductile iron, cast iron and galvanized steel, which are not a concern when it comes to lead. In addition, our corrosion control program is designed to coat the pipes and lead solder to reduce the amount of lead, anywhere in the system, that is able to leach into the water.

Q 4. Where can I learn more about the Town water quality?

Answer: We want our customers to have confidence in the drinking water the Town produces. Each year, the Town provides a detailed Consumer Confidence Report to its water customers, outlining the testing and results of our system: www.estes.org/consumerconfidencereport. Customers are alerted to this information each spring through the utility bills, on the Town's website, email distribution lists, social media, and in articles submitted to the newspapers.

The 2015 report (for testing conducted in 2014) is available on the website now.

The 2016 report( for testing in 2015) is in the final stages of production and will be provided to the public this spring. Results discussed in this FAQ are from the 2016 report.

ESTES PARK NEWS Springtime is the season of reawakening. Bears come out of hibernation, flowers stretch and poke their colorful noggins up out of the cold earth (and into a blanket of snow, if they’re in Estes Park), and birds start going back to choir practice after taking the winter off. Banned to the back row by the choir director is the barn owl, who can’t carry a tune and tends to scream a disturbing, unromantic screech.

Unromantic to you and me, but to a fellow barn owl, that shree call is like a sexy negligee in the owl world of wooing.

There is a barn owl used for educational programs at the nature center where I work that has been flaunting her aural lingerie this spring. The owl is in an indoor/outdoor area inaccessible by a neighboring male owl, but that hasn’t stopped this suitor from trying to get in.

The long, white dribble down the window is proof. (In a Thunker column that ran exactly seven years and two days ago, we learned that birds excrete their waste not as urine, but in the form of uric acid, which has a very low solubility in water so it emerges as a white paste. That paste dribbles down windows quite nicely, if you think of bird poo as nice.) It’s spring!

Temperatures are rising, the rodent population is becoming more active, and with that extra food source, owls are getting in the mood for nesting. Ergo, Mr. Owl has come a’courting.

Barn owls eat between 1,000 and 2,000 mice a year. They are the most beneficial bird of prey in North America, and are especially popular with farmers who rely on the beautiful white, heart-faced owl to rid the barn of grain-devouring rodents.

Question: What does a barn owl do when she doesn’t have a barn in which to hunt?

Answer: We feed them. Last Saturday, the naturalist at the nature center, a lovely young woman named Lauren, explained that she had the next day off and needed someone to feed the owl. She asked if I would put some mice on a stump near the owl so she wouldn’t go hungry on Sunday (spring has ramped up her hunger as well as her nesting instinct). I acted as if I handle mice all the time. “Sure,” I said. “I’ll feed the owl. You just need to show me what to do.” I don’t think Lauren saw me gulp hard, as she was most likely distracted by my forced—I mean casual—smile.

When I taught kids at the Beidleman Environmental Center in Colorado Springs eons ago, I handled a Madagascar hissing cockroach, stroking its back to cause it to hiss for the audience, and I held a tarantula and let it crawl up my arm as I told the kids that tarantulas aren’t as scary as we’ve been led to believe. But I’d been given some time to get used to holding those creepy crawlies.

Saturday, I was put on the spot about the mice.

Dead, bloody mice. That’s different.

Lauren took me into the room where the little white mice were running around in their cage, oblivious to their demise. “I’ll just put some in the fridge for you,” Lauren explained. “All you have to do take them from the fridge and place them on the tree stump and the owl will go after them right away.” I pretended I do this all the time, so I didn’t ask questions. But I wondered, do I hold them by their skinny mouse tails? Will the owl wait for me to get away before she dives for dinner? Will the other mice, still lively and happy in their cage, resent me for my actions?

Sunday came. I looked in on the mice in their cage to see if they recognized me.

They gave me the stink eye. Or was that the pink eye? Then I peeked in the refrigerator. There they were on the shelf in the door: three white mice in a plastic baggie marked “Sunday,” giving me the cold shoulder, literally. I don’t want to know how they went from cheery in their cage to cold and dead in a baggie in the fridge. That’s Lauren’s little secret.

The rest of Sunday was uneventful. I warmed to the idea of feeding the owl and I was no longer squeamish about handling the mice. I emptied the baggie onto the stump and never had to touch the cadavers. Sure enough, within minutes, Miss Owl left her perch, snatched up a mouse, then looked at me in thanks with her big black eyes, the mouse tail dangling from her beak. She tore into her dinner with gusto.

It takes about two minutes for a mouse to enter an owl’s stomach. About two hours later she would have digested her meal and regurgitated the pellet of bones and fur. I didn’t stick around to watch.

Funny thing though. A song my college roommate used to sing, a song I hadn’t thought of for years, came to me as I carried the baggie full of three mice down the hall toward the owl. It went like this (I think you’ll recognize the tune): Three rodents with impaired vision, Three rodents with impaired vision, Observe how they perambulate.

League Of Women Voters Forum On April 7 Regarding Estes Valley Special Districts Estes Valley residents are invited to attend the League of Women Voters of Estes Park’s next public forum, April 7th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Town Board Room.

The focus will be on five special districts: Fire Protection, Recreation & Parks, Upper Thompson and Estes Park Sanitation, and the Park Hospital District.

These districts all have direct impact on the quality of life and services in Estes Park.

Projects involving these districts include continuing flood recovery, construction of the town’s new community center, and the Estes Park Medical Center’s wellness center initiative.

The forum will feature a candidate forum for the upcoming hospital district election scheduled for May 3rd, along with information on how valley residents can cast their vote.

The second half of the forum will consist of brief updates from the districts, as well as a question and answer period. Audience members and viewers watching the meeting streamed live on the town’s website will be able to submit questions.

Special districts have varying boundaries, but unlike town-specific boards and elected positions, most Estes Valley residents are eligible to serve on their elected boards. With the exception of the sanitation districts, these special districts are funded in part with mill levies from property taxes.

A typical property owner will be taxed about $55 for fire protection, $200 for parks & rec, and $210 for the hospital district.

Special districts provide services or infrastructure to promote the health, safety, security, and general welfare of local residents. Special districts are created to increase local autonomy, divide costs of services among property owners and residents, and provide the ability to finance large infrastructure projects.

Attending this forum is a good way for residents to learn more about these districts and what they do, and to begin consideration of possibly serving on these special district boards in the future.

We were heading up a steep switchback, my mom leading the group, when I glanced up ahead and saw a large, dark…something moving across the trail. My brain was confused. Was that a deer or an elk?

No, this thing is too big and wide. Its way of movement was wrong, too – deer and elk don’t lumber the way this creature did. Then, it hit me. I hissed, “Mom!” She looked back at me. I pointed and just started rattling, “It’s a bear, it’s a bear, it’s a bear, it’s a bear.” We spun around, dropped our packs (knowing that the smell of our lunch might attract it), and walked steadily down the trail. When we ran into the next pack of hikers (complete with small children) and shared what we had seen, we were shocked at their disregard for any danger. Even then, we knew the bears were meant to be respected.

A few years ago, Jordan and I took a backpacking trip with my parents to Sandbeach Lake. It was not our first overnight trip but we had not yet invested in bear canisters of our own, so we rented yellow Bear Kegs for the weekend. The ranger at the Wild Basin entrance station warned us of bear activity in the area and we assured him that we had our bear-proof containers, filled to the brim with anything scented. Our first night went smoothly – we had the perfect campsite, the weather was mild and calm, and we enjoyed a glass of wine as the sun set. The next morning, we decided to walk around the lake and afterward, we relaxed in the sand. My dad headed back to camp for a water refill and a few minutes later, we heard whooping and bellowing. Jordan and I looked at each other and said, “It’s a bear.” We sprinted across the beach and back to our tents, where we found food remnants scattered around our campsite and my dad chasing off a big black bear.

The sneak had figured out how to open the locked Bear Keg and enjoyed our salmon dinner for that evening! Needless to say, when we decided to buy our own bear-proof canisters, we went with the sturdy and secure Bear Vault.

Volunteers And Sponsors Needed For Ride The Rockies Visit To Estes Park June 16-17 The Denver Post Ride the Rockies Bicycle Tour presented by ViaWest recently announced the route for its annual summer event. The 2016 ride will take place over six days from Sunday, June 12 to Friday, June 17. Ride the Rockies is a non-competitive event open to cyclists of all ages and participants are encouraged to ride at their own pace.

Estes Park is proud to host the tour for its seventh year as it arrives on June 16 and departs June 17. Volunteers, service clubs and supporting sponsors are needed to make the 2016 event a success.

Each June, Ride the Rockies participants venture on a six- or seven-day bicycle tour across Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Ride the Rockies is embarking on its 31st consecutive tour, making the ride one of the oldest bicycle tours in Colorado.

Adam Shake To Serve As Director Of Communication & Business Development At EDC

He was charged with weaving, DWAI and later released to a responsible person.

On March 15 at 12:41 a.m. police stopped the driver of a vehicle in the 1600 block of Big Thompson Ave. The driver was a 25 year old male from East Menominee, WI and he was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol with a BrAC of .148. He was charged with DUI, DUI per se and weaving and later released to a responsible adult.

After arriving in Estes Park, Shake founded Neanderthal Productions, an internet marketing company. Since his arrival in Estes Park, Shake has served on the boards of Visit Estes Park and the Estes Valley Partners for Commerce as well as volunteering for many other community initiatives.

Estes Park Museum Easter Closure

Estes Park Museum

The Estes Park Museum, 200 Fourth Street, will be closed Sunday, March 27 for the Easter holiday. The Museum will resume its winter hours beginning April 1 when it is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

A number of small changes are taking place in the permanent exhibit “Tracks in Time” including an area to view historical photographs of town juxtaposed with current images. The 1960s exhibit is being replaced with other artifacts from the collection that demonstrate the rich history of downtown Estes Park and recreation throughout the valley and neighboring National Park.

The Estes Park Museum conducts activities that preserve, share and respect the unique history of Estes Park. In Support Of Chuck Levine For Mayor To The Editor: I have known Chuck Levine for the past nine years. Despite the fact that we live in Little Valley, outside of the Town of Estes, I felt called to submit a letter in support of his election as the next Mayor of Estes. Chuck and I worked together in a number of capacities, including on many Sunrise Rotary programs, and also on Estes Tree Board projects such as the Arbor Day Celebration and associated Tree Board beetle mitigation and tree health activities. These words and phrases come to mind when I think of Chuck: integrity, honesty, sincerity, committed, hard-working, patience, intelligence, tenacity, experience and welcoming (in the sense that Chuck welcomes and invites other’s opinions and comments). Chuck is an unusual person in that he has great vision and can see the big picture as well as details. Perhaps most importantly, he is and has been totally committed to and interested in all aspects of the community in which he lives—his presence and work on numerous Town and charitable projects is astounding. His years of experience on the Town Board and as Mayor Pro Tem are invaluable. And, for those of you who tire of mean spirited politics, Chuck is refreshing, always polite, sincere and honest in his relationships with others. If I could vote for him I definitely would (several times if I was allowed!).

Now that most of the lowhanging fruit has been plucked from the Estes Park early history tree, it is time to reach higher and further back on the branches to rediscover less accessible, but equally important, facts regarding our first pioneers.

This Saturday, March 26, the Estes Park Archives program will highlight “19th Century Estes Park,” avoiding the already well-covered ground visited by Isabella Bird and Frederick Chapin, and the earliest memories of Abner Sprague and Enos Mills, to focus on long-forgotten, but hardly trivial, events. In order to determine whether you need to attend this remedial course, take the following 12-question quiz below. The answers will be discussed at the Estes Park Archives program, which starts at 1:00 p.m. at 840 Moraine Avenue. All are welcome, and no reservations are required.

The program, and the questions that follow, uses the strict definition of the end of the 19th century, which occurred on 31 December 1900.

Fine Arts Guild To Host New Event “Your 10 Minutes Of Fame!”

Have you ever wanted to write and direct your own play? “Your 10 Minutes of Fame” is an opportunity for youth and adults to become playwrights, directors, and performers. Participants are invited to write a short play lasting no longer than ten minutes, cast them with friends and/or family and perform them on the Historic Park Theatre stage on May 15, 2016. Productions are open to the public and a panel of judges will bestow awards in youth and adult categories.

Let your imagination run free! A table or two, four chairs, a small shelf, and an

upholstered chair will sit below the stage.

Participants will just lift up and arrange what works for their play. Some costume items will be available such as hats, scarves and vests. Each cast is allowed to bring ONE box full of props and/or costume items.

Spring Chair Yoga Class Offered

IT’S FRIDAY, BUT SUNDAY’S COMIN’!

Once in awhile you will come across a humorous statement about the resurrection of people from the dead. Several years ago, a friend invited me to fly in his small plane to Cabela’s in Sidney, Nebraska to shop. After a delightful flight, we exited the plane and entered the airport office. A poster on the wall caught my eye. Someone had neatly penned these words: “If you don’t believe in the resurrection of the dead, you should be here at closing time!” I wondered if the employees of the airport chuckled at the poster like I did. And I never forgot it.

Unlike that poster, most of the time the subject of resurrection is not taken lightly, or joked about. As EPMC Hospice volunteers, some of us visit caregivers as they care for loved ones, whose departures are imminent. Sometimes we meet with survivors in our grief groups who deal with recent losses. We know that few of these would take a light view of the resurrection of the dead. Consider the family of a small child recently killed in a tragic accident. Ponder grieving families you know who lost someone after a courageous battle with cancer. This week’s focus on the resurrection of Christ can bring words of hope and encouragement. Author Tony Campolo shares an experience that should instill such hope.

“I belong to a minority church in West Philadelphia. One Good Friday there were several of us preaching back-to-back.” He shared how good he felt about his message and the receptivity of the people toward it. However, that quickly vanished as he heard the next speaker.

He writes: “He started his sermon real softly by saying, ‘It was Friday, but Sunday was comin’! It was Friday and my Jesus was dead on the tree. But that was Friday, and Sunday’s comin’.’ As the audience warmed up to those words, he continued: ‘It was Friday and Mary was cryin’ her eyes out. The disciples were runnin’ in every direction, like sheep without a shepherd. But that was Friday, and Sunday’s comin’.’ Now the audience was really getting into it and he continued: ‘It was Friday. The Pharisees were struttin’ around laughin’ and gloatin’. They thought they were back in charge of things. They didn’t know it was only Friday. Sunday’s comin’. It was Friday!

And on Friday, those that oppress the poor and make people suffer were in control. But that was Friday! Sunday’s comin’!” By the time he came to the end of his message all of us were so worked up we could hardly wait to respond. At the end of his message he just yelled at the top of his lungs, “IT’S FRIDAY!’ And all five hundred of us yelled back with one accord, ‘BUT SUNDAY’S COMIN’!’”

Tony continues, “That’s the Good News! That is the word that the world is waiting to hear. That’s what we’ve got to go out and tell the world’s people. When they are depressed, or feel they can never love again, or when they have lost their faith and feel that they can no longer expect great things from God, we must tell them that ‘SUNDAY’S COMIN’!”

I hope all of us share in Tony’s confident testimony: “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, because to all who are on the brink of despair, I can yell at the top of my lungs, ‘It’s Friday, but Sunday’s coming!” And you and me? Are we excited that ‘Sunday’s Coming?’ I certainly hope so. Let’s tell the world. (Bob)

The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division is offering a six-week chair yoga class at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. Classes will be held Mondays, April 4 through May 9, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. The cost for the six-week series is $18 for EPSCC, Inc. members or $30 for non-members.

The registration deadline is Monday, March 28. Stop by the Senior Center with cash or check to register. Class size is limited to 12 participants.

The class is taught by Shambhava School of Yoga instructor Diana Laughlin. Yoga offers many benefits including increased muscle tone, flexibility, balance, strength, and improved mental focus. Yoga has also been shown to improve breathing, posture, and

circulation, as well as reduce stress and tension.

This low-impact class utilizes a chair to explore yoga postures and stretches; the support of a chair is also used for balance in standing poses. Yoga mats are also provided if participants wish to use them during class. This class is designed for all abilities, especially beginners.

Electronics Recycling In Estes Park

Due to a new fee associated with bringing the provider to Estes Park, the Town of Estes Park can no longer host the electronics recycling event that has traditionally been held each spring and fall at the Fairgrounds Park-n-Ride. The League of Women Voters and Community Recycling Committee are investigating the opportunity to host a similar

event in Estes Park in the future. Stay tuned for more information from the committee. In the meantime, old electronics can be taken to the electronics recycling station located at the Larimer County Landfill. The cost is $.40 per pound and is payable by cash only. Hurry, I’m Not In The Obits Today!

I used to laugh at older people saying that when they got the daily newspaper, the first thing they did was check to see if their name was in the obituaries. If it didn't appear there, they were good for another day. Well, I don't laugh at that any more because I am now among those folks. I don't read the obits to see if I'm listed, but have adopted the approach that when I awaken, put both feet on the floor and stand up that it is going to be a good day regardless of what happens. I am alive and thankful for that.

A couple years ago I thought about interviewing older people about their thoughts on dying, since all humans face this reality. I wondered what their thoughts were in terms of possible future lives, is there a Heaven and a Hell, what happens to the life-giving energy in our bodies, and were they happy with their lives and accomplishments.

It's my observation that everyone who has inhabited this earth for any length of time has had problems in their life. We have had to experience the bad times in order to appreciate the good times.

There has been no special treatment for any of us, regardless of our looks, financial well-being, intelligence, social status or religious convictions. We all have confronted heartache, disappointments, stress, physical and emotional pain. All humans have gone through similar life experiences, no matter whether we are

rich or poor, short or tall, healthy or frail, thin or fat, smart or dumb, goodlooking or ugly, talented or not. This is life as all humans know it, and how we have dealt with our experiences has determined our joyfulness or sadness with living.

There are different theories or philosophies of life. Some are extolled by religion, some by passed-down histories, some by education and some by just plain living. I have done it all: organized religion, ancestral history, studies of local and national history, a lot of reading and questioning of faith. The most realistic answers for me were acquired by confronting life each day and doing my best to be a good, contributing person to my life experiences. Having come close to dying recently, I perceive death as moving on to the next adventure. Yes, I'm in favor of another adventure, and actually am ready to try my luck at being a better spirit in the next phase of existence.

As I see it, the spirit moves on to another challenge. What that is I'm not sure, because nobody has come back to tell us about it, but I think it will be good. Really, what choice do we have but to believe what we need to believe in to make it through this life.

Here's to life! Whatever you believe live it!

From Core, Cardio, Crush To Abs In April, Estes Park Is Getting Fit

The Core, Cardio, Crush Challenge was a way for participants to create their own fitness challenge and own it for a month.

Challenges ranged from mass quantities of burpees and minutes of planks, to hours of Spinning.

Three winners came out of the CCC Challenge. Tuesdey Spangler, Jean Siddle, and Constance Spreng took home the CCC titles (out of over 25 participants) in mid-March.

Abs in April is the next month long challenge. Rocky Mountain Health Club members compete for prizes, but anyone who wants stronger abs can take part for fun via the website or Facebook.

Abs in April starts April 1st, but it’s no joke. There is a 30 day Ab challenge (30

different ab exercises, one for every day of the month), weekly challenges, and a daily plank challenge.

Why “Abs in April?” Because swimsuit season is upon us and who doesn’t want to look great in the water (even if it’s just tubing on the Big Thompson over Dairy Queen Falls). In addition to swimsuit season as the reason to get your abs in check, core strength is vital to your overall health, strength and balance.

19th Annual Student Expressions Show Is Now Open To All Young Artists In The Estes Area The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park has expanded the parameters of the annual Student Expressions show to included artwork by all children, ages 2-18, who live in the greater Estes Park area. In past years, due to space limitations, the show only represented students from the Estes Park School District.

"We felt that to truly represent all emerging artists in the area and create a community-wide youth art show, we needed to expand the eligibility and invite the entire community to participate," said Barb Boyer Buck, CAC's executive director. This year, Student Expressions is being co-sponsored by Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) and partially funded by a grant from Estes Park Noon Rotary.

"EVICS is very happy to be partnering with CAC!" said Laurie Dale Marshall, program assistant and parent educator for EVICS. This year, the show will open on April 15 at the Estes Park Conference Center in Rocky Mountain Park Inn. "This was where the show was first held, when it was created almost two decades ago," Boyer Buck noted. "It is a wonderful facility that has the space to hold works from a lot more participants."

Children 18 or younger who live in Estes Park, Allenspark, Glen Haven, Pinewood Springs and all points in between are encouraged to enter one piece into the show at no charge. Observatory Public Night “Cosmology With Quasars: Dinosaurs Of The Universe”

“Cosmology with Quasars: Dinosaurs of the Universe” is the subject of this month’s Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) meeting. they were discovered, how they work, and the lingering controversy about their nature that divided astronomers. Either quasars are small objects, no larger than our solar system that shine with the power of more than a thousand galaxies like our Milky Way; or they are mysterious objects that tell us we do not understand the laws of physics as they apply to our Universe.

The speaker, Dr. Gordon MacAlpine, was involved in early studies of quasars, observational surveys for finding them…and the controversy. Assuming we do understand the laws of physics reasonably well, then small, extremely energetic quasars lit up the Universe during its infancy. However, like dinosaurs, they have become extinct. Yet, unlike the dinosaurs, we can still see quasars because of space-time properties. We simply have to look near the Universe’s edge. What edge…where?

What is on the other side? Hopefully, these and other questions will be answered to everyone’s satisfaction.

Dr. Gordon MacAlpine is a retired astronomer, physicist and a member of the EVAS club. He received a BA in physics from Earlham College and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Wisconsin. After a stint at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, he joined the faculty at the University of Michigan where he was a Professor of Astronomy until 2000. Then he accepted the Zilker Distinguished Professor of Physics chair at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, where he continued teaching astronomy, physics, and environmental science until his retirement in 2012. Gordon and his wife, Barbara, recently moved to Estes Park The observatory is just north of the high school at 1600 Manford Ave. Park in the teacher’s parking lot adjacent to the observatory. The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. The presentation, including a question and answer period, lasts about an hour. Duck Central Opens March 31 In Lower Stanley Village A sure sign that the 2016 Estes Park Duck Race is getting close, Duck Central opens for business on Thursday, March 31. Volunteers will be on hand to assist the 64 charities and groups that are selling adoption forms, to handle walk-in sales, and answer duck-related questions, such as: what are my chances of winning? Answer: Better than ever!

Eudora Brown Almond – wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond – first thought of the idea of setting aside a day to honor physicians. It occurred on the anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Barrow County, Georgia, in 1842. On March 30, 1958, a resolution Commemorating Doctors' Day was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in both the House and Senate to establish a national Doctors' Day. Becoming a physician takes at least 11 years of schooling and sometimes 13 years or more. To be a licensed MD or DO, one must first graduate with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited fouryear college, then graduate from an accredited medical school, generally a four-year program. Then the physicianin-training serves one to four years as a “resident physician” on a hospital staff where medical teaching programs are offered. At this point, the physician studies one of many medical specialties.

All of EPMC’s active staff physicians are board certified physicians. Medical specialty certification in the United States is a voluntary process. While medical licensure sets the minimum competency requirements to diagnose and treat patients, it is not specialty specific. Board certification demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice. Certification by an ABMS Member Board involves a rigorous process of testing and peer evaluation that is designed and administered by specialists in the specific area of medicine. Maintaining the ethical standards of the profession and continuing medical education throughout the physician’s career also are required.

A physician assistant (PA) is a medical professional who works as part of a team with a doctor. A PA is a graduate of an accredited PA educational program who is nationally certified and state-licensed to practice medicine and works under the supervision of a licensed physician.

The PA educational program is modeled on the medical school curriculum, a combination of classroom and clinical instruction. The PA course of study is rigorous and intense. The average length

of a PA education program is 27 months. PA’s also complete more than 2,000 hours of clinical rotations, with an emphasis on primary care in ambulatory clinics, physician offices and acute or long-term care facilities. Rotations include family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, general surgery, emergency medicine and psychiatry.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists have the incredible responsibility of providing vigilant one-to-one patient care of protecting and advocating for patients during their most vulnerable moments. Afterwards they ensure that the patient is delivered safely into the hands of the nursing professionals in the recovery room. And while they carry a heavy load of responsibility it the “patient centered” care that makes their job not only important but gratifying.

As advanced practice nurses, CRNA’s received their specialty education in more than 90 accredited graduate programs offering a master’s degree. Admission requirements include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or other appropriate baccalaureate degree, RN license, and a minimum of one year of acute care nursing experience. The curriculum covers advanced anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, biochemistry and physics related to anesthesia; advanced pharmacology, and principles of anesthesia practice. In addition, CRNAs log in hours of hands-on experience in a wide variety of cases and techniques. They must also pass a national exam to hold the CRNA credential.

Estes Valley Crisis Advocates: Staff and advocates support crime and trauma survivors through a crisis, provide physical safety through emergency shelter and safety planning, offer emotional support and assist with the criminal justice process.

Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership: This group offers help for program participants who need, but cannot afford, mental health services. Programs include community group conferencing that allows offenders to repair harm they have done.

Habitat for Humanity of Estes Valley: This group is currently building its 14th house for a working family that otherwise would not be able to have a home.

Habitat is also preparing more land for several more homes.

Partners Mentoring Youth: Race proceeds will expand the program to include another partnership in Estes Park.

Once matched, opportunities are provided for the partnership to grow through activities, life skills education, community service and courses for mentors.

Available For Public Review: Reroutes And Repairs To Flood Damage Trails Environmental Assessment Rocky Mountain National Park staff have released an Environmental Assessment (EA) for public review for reroutes and repairs to five trails that were heavily damaged or lost during the September 2013 flood. The purpose of the environmental assessment is to address damaged portions of the trails, while protecting natural and cultural resources and preserving wilderness character.

The EA evaluated the park’s preferred alternative, which is to maintain and establish a travel route for each of the trails and a no action alternative, in which damaged trails would not be substantially repaired and the park would continue the present level of trail management and maintenance. The park’s preferred alternative for each of the trails is summarized below. The trails remain open to the public, but portions of the trails and bridges were washed out by flooding and landslides or are badly damaged.

Lawn Lake Trail – Three trail sections would be rerouted and an informal social trail would be improved for visitor travel. Pedestrian and equestrian use would be allowed.

Ypsilon Lake Trail – A new timber bridge across the Roaring River and new trail approaches on either side would be constructed. Pedestrian and equestrian use would be allowed.

Alluvial Fan Trail – A new accessible trail would be constructed between the existing east and west parking lots with a new bridge across the Roaring River.

An accessible overlook trail to Horseshoe Falls would be constructed. A small portion of the accessible trail would extend into wilderness to reach the overlook. Only pedestrian use would be allowed.

Aspen Brook Trail – Four trail sections would be rerouted upslope from damaged trail sections and a trail extension would be constructed to provide a connection with an existing trail outside the park. Pedestrian and equestrian use would be allowed. An adaptive management option includes abandonment and restoration of the trail if funding, easements, and agreements for the trail extension outside the park are

not secured.

Twin Sisters Trail – Existing social trails that connect portions of the trail not damaged by the landslide would be incorporated into the trail maintenance program. Only pedestrian use would be allowed on this trail. An adaptive management option includes construction of a new realigned trail if use of social trails results in resource damage or presents visitor safety concerns. Pedestrian and equestrian use would be allowed under the adaptive management option.

Park staff encourage public participation throughout the planning process.

The park will host a public meeting.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Town of Estes Park Town Hall Board Room at 170 MacGregor Avenue in Estes Park. Information will be provided about the EA and park staff will be available to answer questions. There will be a short presentation at 5:30 p.m., and park staff will be available to answer questions about the EA until 7 p.m.

The EA is available for public review for 30 days, with comments accepted through Monday, April 25, 2016. The document is available electronically for review and comment online by visiting http://parkplanning.nps.gov/romo, the website for the National Park Service’s Planning Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) system. Pet First Aid And CPR Workshop Estes Outreach is offering a Pet First Aid and CPR Workshop. Topics highlighted in the class include: CPR, rescue breathing, shock management, bleeding, injury assessment, heat injuries, cold injuries, and more.

Instructor for the class is Renee Hogden and the workshop will take place Saturday, April 16 from 12-4:30 p.m. Fee for the class is $50 plus $15 supply fee, $65 total. Class will be held in the Estes Park High School, Room 307. Registration deadline is 4/10/16.

About the class: Open for ages 14 and above. Participants receive a certificate of completion at the end of class. Pet First Aid and CPR class includes the hands-on skills and information necessary to prepare pet owners or pet professionals in the event of a medical pet

emergency.

About Renee: Renee has worked with animals professionally for over twenty years, particularly in animal behavior research at zoos throughout the country. Look To Your Library: Discovering Fitness Technology At The Library Coming this April, the Estes Valley Library, in collaboration with REACH (Rural Estes Alliance for Community Health), has created an opportunity for you to make informed decisions about wellness technology. This opportunity comes in the form of software, apps and a fitness-tracking device. April will be the introduction of Fitbits to our circulating collection at the library and is the capstone to our month of wellness programs.

Fitness trackers have become a very popular resource for those just beginning their fitness journey as well as for those who are already engaged in regular fitness activities. Tracking your movement, activity, heart rate and sleep patterns can add motivation and inspiration for those on the wellness path. Through the introduction of these fitness trackers, we hope that we can give you the opportunity to learn more and make an informed decision about this type of wellness device. We invite you to give it a test run (or walk) to determine if this is the right wellness tool for you.

The selection of the Fitbit Charge HR devices that will be available for you to borrow from the library came after investigating all of the possibilities. The Fitbit Charge HR is a mid-level device that has more than just the basics of a pedometer, but does not have as many tracking offerings as some of the more

advanced technology.

As a part of our research process about fitness trackers, library staff participated in a Fitbit trial. For a couple of weeks, we shared them and took turns and reported back our experiences. On some mornings, this even involved several trips up and down the library stairs so that we could watch our total steps and flights of stairs increase. The experiment was fun and was certainly a motivator for us! The overall consensus was that we enjoyed the experience and now, we want to share that with you.

Beginning on April 1, the Fitbits will be available for one-week checkout. If you’re a tech savvy library patron, the Fitbits are very easy to set up. We will also have librarians trained and ready to assist you through our Book-a-Librarian appointments. Meet with a staff member to walk through the set up process, learn more about the device and app, or investigate other fitness trackers that are on the market. Ancient Medicine For Modern Ailments With Melissa Roberts Wellness encompasses many different types of methods. Acupuncture is widely known as a holistic approach to healing and well-being. On Tuesday, April 12 from 12 to 1 p.m., join Melissa Roberts of Estes Park Acupuncture for Ancient Medicine for Modern Ailments: The History and Practice of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine at the Estes Valley Library.

Melissa will present the history of Chinese medicine, how it came to the United States, and how it is being used and integrated into modern medicine.

Melissa will explain how the human body is viewed in Chinese medicine, as a holistic garden to be tended with great care. Melissa will also present and demonstrate acupuncture treatment, explaining how acupuncture works and

what conditions it can treat.

Roberts, a licensed acupuncturist, has been providing health and wellness services to the Estes Valley community since 2001. Owner of Estes Park Acupuncture, she utilizes acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Chinese herbs, dietary education, nutritional supplementation, and lifestyle coaching to help her patients achieve their health goals. Her personal experiences with Chinese Medicine culminated in a deep desire to dedicate her career path to helping others find their own sense of balance, health and wellness.

Move It Mondays At The Library Free – Introductory Movement Class: Join us from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. for Move It Mondays in April. Start your day off with instructor led movement classes.

Why Chuck Levine?

To The Editor: The problems and challenges confronting Estes Park in this election season are significant. To solve them, it goes without saying, there must be the right leadership. That is why I am supporting Chuck Levine for Mayor.

Experience in public elected office not only matters, but matters a great deal.

Chuck Levine has that experience. He was elected by this community to the Board of Trustees in 2004. He was reelected Trustee in 2008. And for the next four years he served as the Town’s Mayor Pro Tem. During his two terms as Trustee, drawing on the experience of nearly three decades as a manager in the public sector, Chuck Levine chaired the Public Works Committee (2005-2008) and the Community Development/Community Services Committee (2008-2012), making him intimately familiar with how our local government works to serve community needs.

Chuck Levine has also served on four other important local boards: In 2004 he was appointed to the Board of Adjustment, where he served two terms (from 2004-2012). In 2014 he was elected to the Park Hospital District Board, which he currently serves as Secretary. He has also served on the boards of the Larimer County United Way and the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado, two important agencies dedicated to helping the unmet needs in Colorado communities, including our own.

In short, over the last twelve years, by virtue of his service in elected office and on appointed boards, Chuck Levine has not only achieved a broad and comprehensive understanding of this community and its challenges, but has shown his ability to work effectively as a board member in establishing and achieving public goals. His vision for the future of Estes Park is a broad, generous, and in-

clusive one. He understands the need for appropriate economic development, and its important relationship to sustaining the quality of life that this community has long enjoyed. He understands, for example, the essential role that competitive broadband, attainable housing, and workforce housing play in securing our economic future. In this, Chuck Levine is surely right when says, “If we don’t continue to grow, we will die.”

Past experience does count—it is almost always the best predictor of future success. But so too do temperament and interpersonal skills—and the ability to bring people together to find mutuallysatisfactory solutions to difficult problems. We live in polarizing times. This, unfortunately, has become as true here in Estes Park as it is in far-off Washington.

The challenges before us as a community our large and they are complex. Proposed solutions based on rigid ideology may have their appeal. But they do not serve as the basis for reasonable and acceptable long-term solutions. They only serve to further divide and exasperate.

As a trained facilitator, who understands conflict resolution and the need to open and sustain channels of dialogue and communication, Chuck Levine is a leader who has the ability to bring us together as a community. To be sure, this is not his responsibility alone. He must be able to count on all of us to help.

Chuck Levine, in short, has long-since demonstrated that he has the experience, the ability, the temperament, and the will to help us demonstrate that being “Mountain Strong” was not simply the slogan of the hour, the product of a community in crisis, but remains a commitment to work together for a stronger and better future for this special place called Estes Park.

Loved Ones Remembered At The Faces Of France Concerts The recent arrest of the only surviving suspect directly involved in last November’s deadly terrorist attack in Paris comes just a few weeks before the Oratorio Society of Estes Park presents a concert commemorating the 130 victims of that attack as well as all American service personnel who have been killed or wounded while defending this country.

The Faces of France concerts will be Friday, April 1st at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 2nd at 2:00 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Estes Park High School. Admission is free. Donations are gratefully accepted.

French inspired music fills the program. Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Georges Bizet’s lively L'Arlésienne Suite no. 2 and John Whitney’s arrangement of George Gershwin’s charming An American in Paris are now in rehearsal. Fauré’s Requiem is considered a favorite of choral singers; it was composed to bring comfort to those grieving over the loss of a loved one. Members of the public are invited to honor a loved one at this concert by making a memorial contribution in any amount to the Oratorio Society. Georges Bizet composed incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play, L'Arlésienne (“the Girl from Arles.”) The

town of Arles is located in sunny southern France, and while the plot of the play is a tragic love story, the music reflects sunny scenery in memorable melodies from all four movements of L'Arlésienne Suite No. 2. OSEP board member and flutist Lynette Johnson says, “The Minuet is especially familiar to anyone who has ever played the flute, because it appears in almost every collection of flute solos.” The city of Arles also inspired Vincent Van Gogh to produce over 300 paintings and drawings during just one year of living there.

In An American in Paris by George Gershwin, the audience can imagine a tourist’s stroll through Paris. You hear car horns, traffic, and the hustle and bustle of the “city of light” throughout the piece. It’s a jazz-influenced work that includes a bluesy section that Gershwin said represents an American visitor being homesick for the States, but he recovers and continues to enjoy his stroll through Paris. It’s one of Gershwin’s most popular compositions.

Why Charley Dickey?

To The Editor: The Trail-Gazette got it right: “Dickey is one of the most well-informed businessmen in town.” But Charley Dickey is considerably more than that, which is why I write in support of his election to the Estes Park Board of Trustees. As the content of his website (CharleyDickey.com) tells us, Charley has his finger firmly on the pulse of this community. He knows its people; he knows its businesses; he knows its organizations; he knows town government—knowledge that is based on personal and persistent engagement.

Charley also knows the immediate and long-term issues and challenges that we face. He has worked hard to become informed, and what he has learned he shares with us in the more than seventy thoughtful and precise responses posted on his website to questions posed by organizations and individuals in the course of this campaign. No candidate tells us more.

By temperament and conviction, Charley Dickey is a facilitator and a doer. He believes that to solve problems people must work together. And on numerous occasions, he has reached out to others, to individuals as well as to groups, to make things happen. To cite but one example, it was his concern in 2012 about the present vitality and future economic viability of the Estes Valley that prompted him to help form the Estes Valley Economic Development Taskforce whose weekly deliberations over a year and half resulted in the establishment of the Estes Park Economic Development Corporation. In this as in all things his approach is direct and simple: “How can we get this done?”

Few candidates for public office have come better prepared, or with a fuller record of public service, than Charley Dickey. He is fully deserving of our support.

And The Winner Goes To.....

During twelve months of consecutive volunteer service, a volunteer of the year is chosen at Life Choices Pregnancy Center of Estes Park.

For the last twelve months beginning in March of 2015, Terry Caldwell has served as an advocate who serves the local fathers, mothers and children of the Estes Valley.

Some of her responsibilities include extensive advocate training, assisting clients with material services such as diapers, clothing and blankets, encouraging and educating clients who are in crisis, offering encouragement, prayer and often a hug to those hurting individuals who need to know God’s love.

What separates Terry Caldwell from the rest of the team? She volunteers two full days a week, she helps with fundraisers, she completes our data entry, she helps train our new volunteers and most of all, she has a positive, engaging demeanor which is appreciated by all who know her!

Terry was born and raised in Arcadia,

CA, later she attended the University of California at Berkeley where she met her husband. In 1973 they moved to Loveland for ten years and then to Estes Park. This June she and Mike will celebrate 45 years of marriage.

Terry and Mike have two children; Sandy age 41 who has two boys ages 10 and 7 and Tommy, age 37 who has a 2 ½ year old boy and a new baby girl.

Terry currently attends Summit Church where she serves as a Church Ambassador, who communicates Life Choice’s events and news to church leadership and members.

Terry’s husband, Mike is a rock climbing, fly fishing and snowshoeing guide 5-6 days per week and loves it!

Some of Terry’s best memories were hiking, backpacking, camping and rock climbing around the country with her family in a van. Today, she still exercises but also loves reading anything and everything!

Diane Antonelli Estes Park resident Diane Marie Antonelli, formerly of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, died Thursday, March 17, 2016 at Prospect Park Living Center.

Born February 8, 1957 in Lancaster PA, Diane received a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Pennsylvania State University in 1981. She continued her education at the University of Northern Colorado, from which she received her Masters of Education in 2000.

Diane taught Middle and High School special education in both Pennsylvania and Colorado. She was an Assistant Principal at John Evans Middle School from 2002 to 2004, and culminated her career as the Principal of Estes Park High School.

Diane loved being around friends, cooking Italian food, volunteering her time with various nonprofit organizations, taking care of animals, and took especially great joy in being with her children.

She is survived by her father and mother, Raymond and Lorraine Antonelli, her daughter Megan, and her three sons, Benjamin, Nikolas, and Jacob.

A Memorial Mass was held for Diane on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Estes Park.
