On April 9 at 8:56 a.m. police arrested a 48 year old male transient who was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear on a driving under restraint charge out of Broomfield. After further investigation, the male was also charged with possession of burglary tools and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On April 12 at 9:57 p.m. police were called to a disturbance at 1600 Soaring Circle Drive. Upon arrival they arrested a 34 year old female from Estes Park and charged her with criminal mischief and domestic violence against a 38 year old male victim. The woman was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On April 13 at 8:50 a.m. police issued a citation for a violation against the wildlife protection ordinance to a 52 year old male business owner in the 400 block of S. St. Vrain Ave. for an unsecured dumpster.

On April 14 at 10:22 a.m. police were notified of several vehicle break-ins in the Second Street neighborhood. Upon investigation, police arrested a 16 year old male from Erie, CO, a 17 year old male from Prior Lake, MN and a 15 year old male from Castle Pines, CO. The three juveniles were charged with two counts of first degree trespass, three counts of theft, one count of criminal mischief, one count of underage possession of alcohol, one count of felony possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Two of the juveniles were transported to Fire Mountain Ranch and one was transported to Platte Valley Youth Services in Greeley, CO. On April 14 at 11:37 p.m. police stopped the driver of a vehicle who was seen weaving in the 1000 block of Riverside Drive. The driver was a 25 year old male from Amarillo, TX who was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with DUI, DUI per se and weaving and later released to a responsible person.

Join Community Conversation About Downtown Parking The ongoing Estes Park Downtown Plan includes the exploration of opportunities to improve the overall parking situation in the downtown area of Estes Park. Based on that objective, the Town of Estes Park is expanding the scope of work included in the Downtown Plan to provide a more in-depth look at Estes Park’s parking needs. A new Downtown Parking Management Plan Task Force has formed to enhance collaboration among the consultant, Transportation Advisory Board and Downtown Plan Steering Committee. The Task Force is charged with examining potential solutions and acquiring feedback from the public. This week, the Task Force will begin a multi month Community Conversation about Downtown Parking to engage Estes Park residents, business owners, employees and guests in determining how to effectively manage downtown parking, today and in the future.

The Community Conversation will be fully coordinated and aligned with the comprehensive Estes Park Downtown Plan process, and will have the following goals: 1. Determine if Estes Park wants seasonal paid parking downtown.

2. Recommend the appropriate technology to manage future parking needs.

3. Deliver a new parking ordinance and operational management plan that addresses needs of guests, employees, residents and business owners.

4. Provide guidance on if, and how much, additional parking capacity should be added downtown.

The Community Conversation will be facilitated throughout 2017 at local events and community organization meetings. In addition, the Task Force is requesting feedback through a brief survey about parking habits and priorities for handling parking issues. The survey is available to the public through Aug.13 at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ EstesParkDowntown. The input provided through the survey will be critical to the development of a Downtown Parking Management Plan, concepts and priorities. A comprehensive Downtown Parking Management Plan is expected to be complete by the end of 2017.

Next Drug Collection Scheduled For April 29 On Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. the Estes Park Police Department will sponsor a Drug Take Back Day to collect unused, unwanted and expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs for safe disposal — no questions asked. This free service will be held at Rocky Mountain Pharmacy, located at 455 East Wonderview Ave. in Upper Stanley Village. Police officers will collect the drugs, which will remain in the custody of law enforcement officers until they can be incinerated.

Estes Park’s Drug Take Back Day is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s national campaign to provide a safe way for people to empty their medicine cabinets of unwanted and poten-

tially harmful prescription drugs. Consumers and caregivers should remove expired, unwanted, or unused medicines from their home as quickly as possible to help reduce the chance that others may accidentally take or intentionally misuse the unneeded medicine. Items which cannot be accepted at the Drug Take Back Day collection sites are needles and sharps, mercury thermometers, oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, pressurized canisters and illicit drugs.

Help Shape Estes Park’s Downtown Plan Work Session takes place April 25-27 The Town of Estes Park will host a Work Session for the Estes Park Downtown Plan process April 25-27. The activities take place at the Rodeway Inn, 1701 N. Lake Avenue in Estes Park. All community members, business owners and other stakeholders are encouraged to come and learn about the process and share their ideas. The primary purpose of the Work Session is to provide an opportunity for community members to learn more about the project, review input received to-date, provide feedback on preliminary ideas, and explore in more detail specific topics related to downtown. The Work Session will be designed to be interactive, engaging and fun. The input provided during this event will be critical to development of the draft Downtown Plan.

As a multiday event, meetings and activities begin Tuesday afternoon and finish midday Thursday. The primary opportunities to get involved are the two open houses. The Town of Estes Park recently initiated an exciting community planning process to establish a long-term vision for the future of Downtown. When complete, the Estes Park Downtown Plan will be used to guide future Downtown development and infrastructure investments. Increased population, greater second-home ownership, recurring floods, increased potential risk due to other natural hazards and increasing competition for destination visitors create a new set of challenges for downtown. The Downtown Plan, which is anticipated to be complete in late 2017, will address topics like development character, bicycle facilities, flood mitigation concepts, parking and more. The Downtown Plan will also include an implementation strategy for achieving the Plan’s vision.

Annual Safety Fair May 6 Enjoy exciting activities and a free lunch Kids and adults are invited to the annual Estes Park Public Safety Fair Saturday, May 6, sponsored by the Estes Park Police Department. This fun, family event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Estes Park Events Complex, at 1125 Rooftop Way. Estes Park Police Officers will be serving free hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks and beverages donated by local businesses, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For the 2017 Safety Fair, more than 20 regional public safety agencies will converge on Estes Park, bringing equipment and apparatus ranging from a bomb robot to medical evacuation helicopters, dive rescue apparatus and more. Agencies currently signed up to participate include the Estes Valley Fire Protection District, Colorado Parks and Wildlife,

Rocky Mountain National Park and Larimer County Sheriff.

Local businesses have generously donated door prizes, including movie tickets and bowling games. Children can register to win one of four bikes to be given away at 1 p.m.

Police Chief Wes Kufeld stated "The Safety Fair has been a collaborative effort over the years to provide education to our citizens about the many services available in the Estes Valley. The Fine Arts Guild Holds Auditions For Summer Youth Theater Camp The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies is excited to announce auditions for the summer Youth Theater Camp production of Shrek The Musical JR. Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks animation film and the Broadway musical, this junior version finds Shrek, everyone’s favorite ogre, with his swamp invaded by any number of fairytale misfits who have been banished by the tyrannical Lord Farquaad. Eager to have his swamp returned to its rek sets off f with a wisenormal state, Shrek cracking donkey to confront Lord Farquaad, only to be presented with the task of rescuing the feisty princess Fiona.

Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, and since this is a fairytale, there are twists and turns along the way.

The Youth Theater Camp is a twoweek, tuition based camp comprised of two parts, a production camp for students interested in acting and a technical camp for students interested in the behind the scenes aspects of theater.

The production camp allows students who have completed 3rd grade through high school to learn or hone acting skills, and culminates in two public performances. Camp will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday, July 17-28. Performances will be Satur-

day, July 29 and Sunday, July 30.

The technical camp is for students 6th grade through high school. Students interested in participating in the technical aspects of theater do not need to audition, but should attend the audition to complete required paperwork. Technical Theater Camp sstudents will help construct and paint the set, make props and serve as backstage, light, and sound crew.

Auditions will be held at 3:15, Saturday, April 22 in the Hondius Room and Sunday, April 23 in the Wasson Room at the library. Students will be asked to sing a song of their choice, read from the script and learn and then perform a short piece of choreography.

Lisa Mann will direct the production camp and Michael Young will be the technical director.

Tuition for production camp is $225 and for the technical camp, $175. A limited number of scholarships based on financial need are available.

Honoring Our WWII, Korean, Vietnam And Purple Heart Veterans On May 29, 2004 President Bush dedicated the World War II Memorial to honor “The Greatest Generation.”

And in the mean time, memorials for Korea and Vietnam were dedicated.

Regrettably, many of these veterans do not have the funds or physical stamina to get to Washington DC on their own to see their monuments.

It is the mission of Honor Flight Northern Colorado (HFNC) to send as many as possible Northern Colorado veterans of WWII, Korea, Vietnam and any recipients of the Purple Heart, the distinctive medal for those wounded in combat - from all wars including Iraq and Afghanistan to Washington D.C. to visit their memorials, absolutely free of charge. So far, HFNC has sent at total of 2,165 veterans to Washington DC with 265 scheduled to take the trip this year. During the trip, any special needs such as oxygen, walkers and wheelchairs are provided from the time they leave Embassy Suites in Loveland until they return.

The next trip for Honor Flight Northern Colorado will be May 7-8, and 123 veterans are signed on to go. Each flight costs some $130,000. Sixty-three "guardians," including medical personnel, will accompany the veterans and each donates a tax deductible $800, which becomes "seed" money for Northern Colorado Honor Flight.

This year, in honor of Estes Park’s Centennial, the 18th trip to be taken by the Northern Colorado Honor Flight has been named in honor of Estes Park. This honor was also bestowed on Estes due to

the fact that our very own Honor Flight committee has raised an amazing $100,000 for Honor Flight, sending 77 veterans from Estes Park alone. That is quite an accomplishment to be proud of.

Members of the Honor Flight committee have announced that on this trip, Estes Park residents Gary and Kris Hazelton and Dallas Claiser will be guardians for several veterans and they would like to invite anyone who would like to join them on their send-off in the early morning hours of May 7. Past Honor Flight participants and WWII veterans Bob Brunson, Vern Mertz and Jim White and other veterans will gather at Good Sams at 5:30 a.m. and then they will caravan to the Embassy Suites in Loveland where they will join other veterans at a special ceremony where you and your children are invited to personally participate in history - the inspirational Sunday morning send-off. Along with the EP veterans, meet our Northern Colorado neighbors, ask about their experience, take your photo with them, and express appreciation. Please join us 7:00-8:30 a.m. in the Embassy Suites Convention Center at Interstate 25 and Crossroads Boulevard. Everyone gathers at 7 a.m. for an orientation, breakfast an a short ceremony. At 8 a.m. the 123 veterans and 63 guardians will board busses to DIA for their special trip and will be escorted by 50-100 motorcyclists from The Patriot Guard. On the trip to DIA, fire trucks and public supporters will line the overpasses and frontage roads, cheering and waving the American Flag. At the Signature Air terminal at DIA there will be another short ceremony while preparing to board the plane and military personnel from Buckley Field will assist in the boarding process.

Upon arrival in Baltimore, the plane is greeted with a water cannon salute from a fire engine and as the veterans enter the terminal, they are greeted with more fan-

fare from National Honor Flight volunteers, airport personnel and the general public. In the evening, there is a banquet in their honor at the Baltimore Hilton Hotel and a welcoming keynote address from a military dignitary. The following morning, the veterans and guardians board buses for a trip to visit the memorials in Washington DC that were built in their honor.

Read our Virtual E-Edition at www.epnews.com Last week in this space we learned the history and significance of the impactful poem The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus, which graces the base of the Statue of Liberty. A portion of this poem is familiar to most of us: “…Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free…” The rest of the poem is as unrecognizable as Shakespeare’s Sonnet 12. (“When I do count the clock that tells the time, And see the brave day sunk in hideous night…” Heard it before? Me neither.)

To Joe Potter, the writer of last week’s column, every word of The New Colossus is familiar because he memorized the entire poem as a way to affirm one of the core values of the United States.

“My heart goes out to the immigrants and the families who are being separated,” Joe said. “Anyone who has the guts to try to get here to make a better life for themselves deserves all the support we can give them.” Joe felt more committed to the moral code of our country once he could recite The New Colossus by heart.

By heart. That’s what we call it when someone memorizes something. They learn it by heart. In the introduction to her book, Poems to Learn by Heart, Caroline Kennedy explains, “If our circumstances change and things seem to be falling apart, we can recall a poem that reassures us. If we find ourselves in unfamiliar or frightening surroundings, a poem can remind us that others have journeyed far and returned safely home.

If we learn poems by heart, we will always have their wisdom to draw on, and we gain understanding that no one can take away.”

That’s what Joe Potter says too. “When I memorize a poem it gets into my DNA, my bone marrow.” He should know. He has memorized 27 poems since he retired from teaching a couple of years ago.

Some are short and sweet (I Shot an Arrow into the Air by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) while others are longer (Still I Rise by Maya Angelou). He has memorized children’s verse (My Shadow by Robert Louis Stevenson), many spiritual poems (I Am There by James Dillet Freeman and Abou Ben Adhem by James Henry Leigh Hunt, naming just two), and, because of his interest in Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, Joe has memorized Oh Captain, My Captain by Walt Whitman, Lincoln, Man of the People by Edwin Markham, and the Gettysburg Address by our 16th president.

Joe’s repertoire includes a poem written by his great-grandmother and another by his grandfather.

“I feel close to my granddad in a way I never did before I memorized his poem,” Joe said. “He’s been dead for 45 years, yet

when I recite his poem I feel like he’s sitting right beside me.”

Memorization is a skill that takes practice and they say the more we do it the better we get at it. It’s not easy but like most difficult undertakings, the rewards are worth the effort.

“I’ve discovered that when I memorize a poem it becomes a friend, and I carry that friend wherever I go,” Joe Potter said.

Here is one of the poems Joe memorized, written by his great-grandmother, Minnie Garland Wood and never published outside a family notebook, called Joy of Living: Oh give me the joy of living And some useful work to do The spirit of thanksgiving With a loyal heart and true.

Some pathway to make brighter When tired feet now stray Some burden to make lighter While it is day.

On the fields of the master’s gleaming May my heart and hand be strong May I know life’s deepest meaning Let me sing life’s sweetest song And with some faithful hearts to love me May I nobly do my best And at last with heaven above me Let me rest.

I think about Tom Sutherland who, in 1985, was kidnapped in Lebanon and held hostage for more than six and a half years, along with several other Americans. After their release, Sutherland and fellow-hostage Terry Anderson told of how they sat, chained to a wall, telling stories to keep each other alive. They also read poetry, including the Iliad and the Odyssey. Sutherland said when he became so depressed that he wished to end his life, two memorized lines from the Epitaph on William Muir by Robert Burns brought him back from the darkness: If there is another world, he lives in bliss.

If there is none, he made the best of this.

The jihadists chained Sutherland’s body but could not chain his mind, where the poetry was kept. Sutherland died last July in Fort Collins.

Renowned Belgian Photojournalist Johan Lolos To Tour Estes Park & RMNP Travel/Adventure Influencer Embarks on a Two-Week Trip to Visit All of Colorado's National Parks in April 2017 Johan Lolos, a Belgian-born, self-taught travel/adventure photographer, has captured some of the world’s most spectacular natural destinations. Now, he’s focusing his lens on Colorado’s national parks, launching his adventure at the fourth most visited national park in the country, Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) and the Park’s base camp, Estes Park.

Bears Are Us Encourages Residents, Businesses And Visitors To Keep Bears Wild And Safe Bears Are Us would like to encourage residents, businesses and visitors to help keep bears wild and people safe by complying with the Town of Estes Park's wildlife ordinance and the new Larimer County wildlife ordinance. Bears Are Us would like to thank the Larimer County Commissioners for passing this important county ordinance last week.

These ordinances are critical steps in helping to enhance public safety, reducing human and bear conflicts and keeping bears wild.

Many towns and some counties in Colorado have much stricter wildlife ordinances than our town and county ordinances. Snowmass Village has had a wildlife ordinance since 1998, Aspen since 1999, Crested Butte since 2007, all areas of Pitkin County since 2001 and unincorporated areas of Eagle County since 2007. All these towns and counties

recognized the need for strict ordinances along with education as key components of human and bear conflict management.

Bears are not relocated in the Estes Valley. Sadly, every year bears are killed in the Estes Valley and in some years this has included mother bears and their

ticipant again this year in the Mountain Festival. The Mountain Festival takes place on Friday, April 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Events Center at the fairgrounds. It is a celebration of Earth Day, Arbor Day and Mountain Culture!

Bears Are Us will be handing out brochures on how to be "bear smart" and teaching children at our "homesite" and "campsite" how to live and camp responsibly in bear country.

In addition, children and adults can make headbands and bookmarks using bear stamps and ink pads.

Estes Park Board Of REALTORS® Help Our Community In Many Ways The Estes Park Board of REALTORS® schedule yearly fundraisers for several causes in the community. The funds are used to support housing and educational needs in the Estes Valley. Through the efforts of your local REALTORS®, thousands of dollars are awarded to people in need of housing, down payment assistance and scholarships for higher education costs.

This continual effort is one of the ways REALTORS® give back to the community.

For housing needs the REALTORS® have two funds available for individuals and families, The Estes Valley Housing Initiative and the Down Payment Assistance Program. The Estes Valley Housing initiative collaborates with Crossroads Ministry, who has pre-set qualifying parameters.

This enables money to be given to assist in emergency housing needs. The Down Payment Assistance Program is an opportunity to which applicants are screened, given educational opportunity about homeownership and handed tools for future success.

This loan is a very low interest rate, attainable and affordable. The Estes Park Board of REALTORS® has partnered with the Estes Park Housing Authority to maintain the funds and qualifying criteria. This endeavor is unique and efficient in that the money loaned out is re-paid by the borrower and then cycles through to be given out again as another new loan. This program allows individuals and families to receive money for a down payment to purchase a home, so they may continue to live, work and enjoy the Estes Valley.

Education is important for the youth to get a head-start in their career and life path. The scholarship program is coordinated by the high school. For these kids who have strived to be involved in the community, the school and in other extracurricular activities, they are awarded scholarships as a sign of future success.

Scholarships show investment from the community as well. To some of these students a scholarship means being able to attend College or Vocational School when they otherwise might not have had the

chance.

The scholarships are granted to students who have had academic achievement and community involvement, but that is not the only facet looked at. Overall attitude at school and with students shines a light on the dedication of the student. Financial need also plays into finalizing whom the scholarship funds will go to. In the past the Estes Park Board of Realtors had a mandate that the student be interested in Real Estate. That prerequisite has been relaxed over the years to encompass students who are interested in going into business for themselves.

A short story of success pertaining to the scholarship program. 13 years ago there was a student who was not an outstanding academic, or an over achiever. This student was an average attendant at best. What happened from there was amazing. She applied for a scholarship. Who knew she was ready to make the plunge. She was awarded a $1000 scholarship, based on financial need. She was not going to let it go to waste. This was her ticket upward and onward. She enrolled in college and immediately gained self-esteem and found herself immersed in the new surroundings. She has pursued further education and is now a cellular chemist. She is currently working toward a cure for Leukemia. What amazing success from $1000 and of course a lot of dedication. She will forever remember that scholarship. Her future was paved for success. She just needed some help realizing her potential.

The Estes Park Board of REALTORS® in past years has had a variety of events to draw interest in the scholarship program.

There have been Bowling Tournaments, Golf Tournaments, and even concerts. The Estes Park Board of REALTORS® want to thank you, the community, for your support of our programs, youth and future success for all in Estes Park. Without the help of everyone these programs would not exist. Let’s not forget how the small things in life can make a huge difference.

Ballet Renaissance Alliance With BGCLC Includes Loveland American Ballet Theatre soloist, Alexandre Hammoudi, a long-time friend and colleague of Estes Park resident Radoslaw Kokoszka, taught two special ballet master classes for students at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Larimer County in Loveland, this past Thursday April 13.

The classes were hosted by Estes Park’s Ballet Renaissance, which has been working in partnership with BGCLC since last year. The two nonprofits began their alliance with a pilot program here in Estes last summer and expanded the alliance to include nearby Loveland last fall.

Last Thursday, students from both Loveland and W. Loveland BGCLC locations had the opportunity to meet Hammoudi, take one of two special master classes he taught, and receive an autographed photo of Hammoudi dancing with ballet megastar Misty Copeland, who is herself a Boys and Girls Club alumna.

The classes took place in the Pulliam Building’s Music Room, which was converted last fall, into a music and dance room at the onset of the Loveland BR/BGCLC alliance. Ballet Renaissance found and purchased a gently used sprung dance floor and marley floor covering, (essential for keeping dancers safe during the rigors of ballet classes), and with permission from BGCLC and help from a handful of Loveland parents, it was installed in the room last September. The music room al-

ready had mirrors lining one wall and Kokoszka, working with one of the fathers, hand crafted six portable ballet barres for the space.

Last Thursday’s classes were Hammoudi’s first offering for Boys and Girls Clubs of Larimer County and were part of a special week with Hammoudi, sponsored in part by Ballet Renaissance’s recent First Western Trust grant win.

Ballet Renaissance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to educating and inspiring youth and the community through the art of classical ballet.

There are two branches of Ballet Renaissance: the original branch, located in southeast Michigan (since 1997), and a northern Colorado branch, based in Estes Park (since 2011). Here in Colorado, Ballet Renaissance contracts to provide ballet training at Estes Park’s Center Stage School of Dance and partners with Boys and Girls Clubs of Larimer County, with programming for both Estes Park and Loveland.

Art Center To Celebrate 30 Anniversary The Art Center of Estes Park is in the mood to celebrate! May 2017 marks the Art Center’s 30th anniversary, and we feel that’s a great accomplishment. We would like to invite the whole community to our anniversary celebration at the Art Center Saturday, April 29 from 2:004:00PM. Please join us for the celebratory festivities including art demonstrations and refreshments.

The year before the Art Center opened its doors in May 1987, a small group of Estes Artists had shows with sales at various places around town.

It became a "dream" to have a place of their own to show their work all the time. There were 21 artists to start, with a variety of media, and they were all willing to work together to make the "dream" happen. In those days, 30 years ago, local galleries didn't welcome local artists. And, none of them had an educational element -classes, workshops, or programs.

From the start, the Art Center was to be community oriented and to be nonprofit with education as an important part of its mission. It has never been a co-op, nor had a single owner. In the be-

ginning, there was only the front gallery with a 3/4 wall for a packaging counter plus a desk behind it. A glass window was in place looking into the Sun Room, which was Chris Switzer’s weaving studio.

From day one, there has been a classroom for education in back. Sometimes it's a kitchen for openings and sometimes it is a receiving area for incoming new work. Chris Switzer signed the lease, got an Estes business license, state sales tax license, opened a bank account, put down deposits for utilities and phone, got insurance, etc. All the artists helped with sitting the desk, and they called each other when something sold.

The First Staff members were Chris Switzer, center director coordinating educational activities and Lynda Vogel, gallery and events coordinator After getting the doors open at the Art Center, the next step was to fill out the lengthy forms to become a non-profit.

Chris Switzer worked a solid week on it and then Glen Mapes, lawyer and husband of founding artist, Betty Mapes, looked it over. He was helpful with the by-laws too. Next was the first Board of Directors, and several people volunteered. Leo Weber, master woodworker, was the first board President. They worked on a mission statement, and came up with the following: “The Art Center of Estes Park is a non-profit organization which provides a facility to support the work of local and regional artists, striving to promote exhibition, education, and excellence in the visual arts. Proceeds benefit the artist and contribute to the Art Center’s education and community outreach. ” The Art Center had more committees then and the participating artists all stepped up to the plate, choosing their own area of interest. Lynda Vogel, parttime employee from the start, was in charge of the gallery. Chris Switzer helped with hanging as she had experience from her recent 6 years as a student at CSU. There was an "opening" every month. At the beginning, artists brought "finger food" and we just had punch. Featured artists were invited artists, to get more variety of artwork and installing the shows took place during the late afternoon and evening, so as not to lose daytime customers.

We had many local supporting members in the beginning and openings were well attended. It was fun! Sales of work were a thrill. Artists called each other when something sold. Slowly, out of town artists were added, primarily to have representation in another media.

Soon, we saw the need to keep a balance of media represented. Always; ceramics, photography, jewelry, wood working, fiber and "crafts" were encouraged in addition to drawing, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting. For a while, there were several sculptors from Loveland that participated. There were field

trips down there to see the Sculpture Park with a mentor discussing the pieces.

Speakers and field trips were fund raisers for the Art Center.

After volunteering for nearly 3 years, Alice Sullivan was hired to replace Chris as a part-time paid director. She had been volunteering in many ways since the beginning. She had experience with fundraising and went to all the local clubs to talk about the Art Center. Back then there were business and club memberships supporting the Art Center.

Later, businesses changed to sponsoring an opening or donating food for the “Lines into Shapes” reception. The Estes Park Weavers Guild is a member and provides a Fiber Award for “Lines into Shapes.” There was no Town government support nor funding in the early years. It was a good beginning! It was hard work, but very worthwhile. The local community was very supportive and at one time the Art Center had over 300 supporting members! Tourists liked the Art Center and returned when they came to Estes Park again.

Today, thirty years later, the Art Center is alive and well as the longest surviving art gallery in Estes Park. We are located at 517 Big Thompson Avenue in lower Stanley Village, right where we started, but we have since expanded to almost double the original gallery space. There are currently 39 participating artists working in media including acrylic, ceramics, charcoal, collage, egg tempera, fiber, gourds, jewelry, mixed media, oil, pastel, photography, pyrography, watermedia, and wood. This year the Art Center will sponsor its 17th annual “Art Market”, an arts and crafts show/sale in Bond Park Memorial Day Weekend, as well as the 20th annual national juried exhibition “Lines into Shapes” October 28-November 12. Education remains an important aspect of the Art Center which continues to offer a variety of art education opportunities throughout the year including Adult and Intergenerational classes and free educational art presentations. Classes, exhibitions and presentations are posted on our website at www.artcenterofestes.com. Class registration can be done online or at the Art Center.

Again, we invite you to come to the Art Center from 2:00-4:00 p. m. Saturday, April 29, and join us in celebrating a very special occasion for a very special place.

Advanced Beginner Bridge Classes To Be Offered A four session bridge class will be offered during May by John Krueger, accredited by the American Bridge Teachers of America (ABTA). A Focused Solution To A Valley-Wide Problem Concentrating housing units in the RM zones is a reasonable solution. Threestory construction makes a substantial difference in costs. Increasing the height limit will allow construction of threestory apartment buildings that incorporate sloped roof lines and architectural elements that are consistent with our existing residential construction.

As Community Director Randy Hunt informed the Planning Commission at a recent meeting, our options are to build up (allow three-story apartment buildings) or build out—spread greater density within more residential zoning areas. Last week I wrote about the problem of workforce housing, and some readers wondered if anyone is pursuing any solutions. One suggested solution is that more workers simply commute from the Front Range. But a Denver Post story recently revealed that seven Front Range counties rank among the twelve least affordable for housing nationwide—including both Boulder and Larimer counties. In fact, the Denver Post reports that “Nowhere else in the country has home affordability gotten so out of whack than along the northern Front Range, according to a housing report…” with a headline that described Northern Colorado as the “epicenter” of housing unaffordability.

The Housing Needs Assessment for Estes Park contains a list of suggested solutions, noting that there is no one silver bullet that will solve such a large problem. One suggestion was to address development code barriers that make housing unaffordable for many. A density bonus for projects that address either affordable or workforce housing has already been adopted. Many Estes area residents probably read a news article last month about increasing the height limit in Multi-family Residential (RM) zoning areas in the Estes Valley.

The proposal is to address a single zoning area—not the entire valley. RM zoning represents a tiny fraction of our total Estes Valley land area. In 2014, the Community Development Department produced a couple of memos that address the status of commercially zoned property in the Estes Valley, and the potential role of the Town in fostering workforce housing. The 2014 inventory of land zoning in the Estes Valley Development area revealed that Multifamily Residential (RM-1) zoning represents just under 1.5 percent of the total land mass in the valley. As of 2014, there were 294 acres zoned RM for apartments, and 65 acres zoned as two-family (RM-2), for a total of 1.8 percent of the land mass. The estimated future buildout forecast that the RM zoning areas would provide 2,255 units (at a bit less than 8 units per acre). This would constitute 18.8 percent of our estimated future housing stock of 12,019 units. Thus, nearly 20 percent of our housing stock is forecast to be on just 2 percent of our land.

Another option already considered was allowing accessory dwelling units (ADUs) for workforce and caregiver housing. The Town Board has already rejected ADUs as part of the solution to workforce housing. Residential neighborhoods did not want greater density in low-density parts of the Valley as a workforce housing solution.

Rejecting greater density valley-wide can be seen as a reasonable decision.

But failing to provide an alternative that facilitates construction of three-story apartments would result in the third al-

ternative—do nothing. Doing nothing (or too little) would allow the workforce housing problem to continue to grow, and would ultimately undermine the quality of life that local residents have come to expect.

When every resident feels the absence of working age families, it will be even more difficult to find solutions. If we care about being a multi-generational community, let’s take positive action now. If we do not act, we risk becoming the very type of resort that many residents profess they do not want us to become.

War Journal Of Charles P. Swift On Display At Macdonald Bookshop Display courtesy of Charles P. Swift, Jr. and Dolph S. Swift (sons) The war journal of Charles P. Swift is now on display at Macdonald Bookshop in downtown Estes Park. The journal is a must read for any serious student of the history of WWII in the Pacific. It will be available for reading at Macdonald Bookshop from April 18-April 24, 2017. The family requests that you be very careful with it as it is delicate condition.

Charles Swift was born and raised in Lyons, CO on Oct. 14th, 1914. He and his three brothers were known widely throughout CO for their baseball talent, playing together in the early 1930s on the Lyons Town Team against opposing teams from throughout the state. Charles, along with his brother George, took jobs with Rocky Mountain National Park in order to play for the Estes Park Town Team.

Charles joined the Navy in Nov. 1937 and was assigned the destroyer USS Phelps. In 1939 he was selected to pitch for the Fleet All-Stars against the Cuban National Team (they were beat 2-1).

On December 7th, 1941, Charles Swift was a radioman aboard the Phelps at Pearl Harbor on that fateful day. Subsequently, the Phelps was at sea continually seeing action in early

May of 1942 at Coral Sea, at Midway in early June 1942, and at Guadalcanal in August, 1942. The journal ends when he finally got leave to return to the States where he married Roberta Lee Smith in November, 1942.

Later in the war, Charles served on the light carrier USS Shipley Bay at Leyte Gulf in 1944 and at Okinawa aboard the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis in 1945, when the ship took a hit from a kamikaze. The Indy made it back to the States in May, 1945, where Charles was assigned to shore duty, missing the illfated cruise carrying the atomic bomb to Tinian Island, and then being torpedoed between Guam and Leyte with heavy loss of life.

Charles also served on the battleship USS Iowa during the Korean conflict.

Charles Swift retired from the Navy in July, 1957.

He passed away on June 20th, 1998.

Roberta Swift passed away on September 25, 2009. There were the personification of the “Greatest Generation.” Rest in peace.

Thomas Tudor will share his personal story of how he was assigned to the tomb and what daily life is like for a guard of the tomb.

His presentation on May 19 will be in two parts. Part one follows Arlington from its first owner in 1669 to the present including the establishment of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Thomas will talk about the additions to the tomb of veterans from World War ll, the Korean War and the Vietnam and how those veterans were chosen. Intermission. Part 2 Thomas will talk about how he was selected and what it is like to guard the tomb. He will explore the myriad of persons who are interred in Arlington National Cemetery. There will be time for questions and answers.

The program will take place at the Stanley Hotel in the McGregor Room.

Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day At Macdonald Book Shop April 29 Macdonald Bookshop will be celebrating Independent Bookstore Day on April 29th. Since 1928, Macdonald’s has been dedicated to serving book lovers, local families, tourists and authors. Over the years, owner Paula Steige has developed long standing friendships with customers and now their grown children.

Local Young Chautauqua Upcoming Performances

Local Young Chautauqua Performances coming up The Estes Park Young Chautauquans are performing their character presentations this coming Friday and next, April 21 and 28, at 7:00 p.m. at the Estes Valley Library. There are 19 enthusiastic students third grade through high school who have been researching historical figures since January. They have written their speeches, come up with costumes and props, and are now ready to share their stories with you! Young Chautauqua is a nationally recognized youth program in which young scholars portray historical figures. Through monologues and question-and-answer sessions, young scholars, in and out of character, engage the audience in lively discussions with people from the past and then provide insight into historical study. The Young Chautauqua program is a valuable way to increase young people's understanding of and engagement with history.

Young Chautauqua is comprised of a series of workshops of research, planning, writing, creating, practicing, and presentation.

Students bring history to life by immersing themselves in the writings and lives of historical characters. Young people select an inspiring person in history who possesses the qualities, values, and life circumstances that they find intriguing. This year's cast of characters includes quite a variety of people from history, some ancient, some renaissance, and few who are still living. On April 21, you can meet Jane Goodall, Anastasia Romanov, Anne Frank, Leonardo Da Vinci, Nostradamus, Lawrence Anthony, Valentina Tereshkova, Alice Paul and Frida Kahlo. Performing on April 28: Alan Rickman, Lewis and Clark, Sacagawea, Amelia Earhart, Anne Bonny, Queen Elizabeth 1, Cleopatra, William Shakespeare, and Alfred Nobel. The health fair will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, from 7 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Estes Park Medical Center. This event offers the community the opportunity to obtain basic health screenings. Offered again this year will be the baseline carotid ultrasound. This test provides a screening to test for blocked or narrowed carotid arteries which can indicate an increased risk of stroke.

Please note that some tests require a 12 hour fast. These include the Lipid Panel, Cholesterol, and Glucose. In addition, be sure to drink plenty of water prior to having lab work done. The other blood screening does not require individuals to fast. Coffee, juice, fresh fruit and snacks will be available to all participants.

The health fair is always a popular and well-attended event. The road to good health starts with each of us. Preventing diseases or detecting and treating them in their early stages are one of the best steps we can take toward good health.

“I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING…DO YOU?” There are many good stories and sayings that circulate about the lack of vision and ‘knowing where we are going’. One of many I’ve heard is: “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else!” And it’s so very true, isn’t it?

Like the story a bagpiper told about an assignment he had received to play at a service at a cemetery. “As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a paupers’ cemetery in the Nova Scotia backcountry. Not being familiar with the backwoods, I got lost, and, being a typical male, I didn’t ask directions. I finally arrived…an hour late…and saw that the funeral guy had already gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left…eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down, noting that the vault lid was already in place. Not knowing what else to do, I started to play. The workers put their lunches down and began to gather around. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless, friendless man. As I began playing ‘Amazing Grace’, workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept. When it ended I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say: ‘I’ve never seen anything like that before, and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.’ If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else…perhaps at a septic tank.

The story of many peoples’ lives are very much like his experience. Perhaps we’re so busy in life, that we take very little thought about where we are going, like the man who “Jumped on his horse and rode off in all directions!” If that is your story then you have very little time to plan any one direction or goal in life. As a result, you’ll end up in ‘no place’ or in the ‘wrong place’. We’re familiar with the saying, “He’s a ‘jack of all trades but master of none’.”

There are good things to be gained by being ‘multi-talented’ but in most cases it’s essential to focus on one. In the Bible Paul wrote, “This one thing I do..” And we should practice this ‘One thing I do…’ attitude toward life as well. Let me share a local example. I don’t think he would mind. Many Estes Park folks knew Sam Logan, having heard him play his guitar and sing locally, or from his days at Safeway. You may know that, for much of his life, Sam would tell you he did what Sam wanted, rather than what God and Jesus would have wanted. In the past few months, Sam decided to get his priorities straight. He had long believed in God and Christ, but he had never become a Christian. Several months ago Sam confessed his faith in Christ and was baptized into Christ. As he pondered his ‘new future’, Sam became a ‘preacher’ of sorts. Until he died, he shared his confidence in his future with any who would listen. “I know where I’m going”, he told a friend, “Do you?” How about you? ‘Do you know where you’re going?’ in today’s world, and your future destination? I…and Sam…hope so.

April “Explore Our Store� Showcases The Lazy Moose & Moosely T’s Kassondra enjoy having a store that can present a more general selection, as it allows them to have more freedom (and fun!) in their purchasing. The store has historically included – and became known for – t-shirts with funny sayings as well as apparel adorned with beautiful, scenic images, so the Koschs will continue to carry those products. They have expanded their child/infant line in this store as well, and have added some Estes Park Centennial items to celebrate our town’s 100th year! T-shirts, sweatshirts, and even a custom-engraved wood ornament (coming soon), all featuring the official Centennial logo, are available at both stores. Moosely T’s is also open year-round, and both stores have active Facebook pages.

This month’s “Explore Our Store� took place on April 12 and featured two stores owned by Jesse and Kassondra Kosch: The Lazy Moose & Moosely T’s. Representatives from the Ambassadors, Visitor Center staff, Estes Valley Partners for Commerce, Estes Area Lodging Association, the Town of Estes Park staff enjoyed checking out each shops’ offerings and hearing wonderful presentations from the owners.

The group’s first stop was The Lazy Moose, located at 140 E. Elkhorn Avenue. Jesse and Kassondra, along with daughters Tatum and Ariel, were there to welcome attendees with coffee and treats.

The Lazy Moose used to be the site of Big Red of the Rockies, which Jesse owned for many years. After growing their family, Jesse and Kassondra made the tough decision to shift their energy and try something new. They knew they didn’t want to give up their great ‘main street’ location so they opened The Lazy Moose, focusing on Lazy One pajamas. This brand has historically performed well at Moosely T’s, their sister store, so Jesse and Kassondra decided to expand the pajama product line offerings. The Lazy

souvenir t-shirts has created significant differences in how they are running their businesses, and they are both enjoying this new challenge! Their focus will continue to be on presenting quality products at good prices while providing great customer service, and they give big kudos to their employees for bringing success to both stores.

Kassondra and Tatum guided the group into the store, where attendees browsed the large collection of t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other quirky items. Moosely T’s was previously owned by Jerri Paulson for the past thirteen years. Jesse assisted Jerri with building the racks and stocking inventory when she first moved in, so the Koschs have been part of the store’s history since its inception. When Jerri decided to retire, she offered sale of the business to Jesse and Kassondra, and they thought it would be a natural partnership for The Lazy Moose. Jesse and

Rodeo 34 Award To Recognize Top Contestant The Greeley Stampede, Rooftop Rodeo Estes Park, and Larimer County Fair & PRCA Rodeo have partnered to recognize the rodeo contestant that earns the most money combined at their three rodeos in 2017.

The recipient will win the inaugural Rodeo 34 Award, receive a $3,000 gas & grocery gift card, and a championship pure beaver custom cowboy hat courtesy of Trent Johnson and Greeley Hat Works valued at $1,650. The Rodeo 34 Award recipient will also be featured during the 2017 PRCA Mountain States Circuit Finals at the Ranch, Larimer Country’s Fairgrounds and Events Complex in Loveland, Colorado on October 27th and 28th.

“This new partnership will be a great way to recognize and award the contestant that competes at all three rodeos.” said Mark Purdy, Estes Park Western Heritage, Inc. Chairman, “We felt it was important to provide items to help keep the contestant on the road like fuel and food. Hopefully we can continue to add to the prizes” The new alliance, named after the highway that connects the three rodeos, was created to help promote the sport of rodeo. Members from the three rodeo committees will meet throughout the year to share information, cross promote and build new partnership.

Village Thrift Shop Awards Over $84,000 In Grant Monies The Village Thrift Shop announced this week the names of the non-profit organizations that have been awarded grants.

The amount totals over $84,000, which was distributed to 39 organizations. The awards follow the first year of operation of the Village Thrift Shop, which is run solely by volunteers. The By-Laws of the organization state that after paying the direct costs of running the Thrift Shop, any profits will be used to fund grants to 501(c)3 organizations that serve the Estes Valley.

President of the Board, Janet Maharry said “We are ecstatic to be giving away this money to so many deserving organizations. We could not have done this without the generosity of the community who have donated items, our hard-working workers who volunteer so many hours, and the support of our many customers. Thirty-one Estes Park High School students had the opportunity of a lifetime—to travel as an ensemble to New York City and perform in this renowned music hall. These students and chaperones, led by EPHS choir director, Alan Denney, recently partnered with Manhattan Concert Productions for this experience. The EPHS students were joined by students from four other high schools from across the country. The combined choirs, totaling 270 vocalists, were under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Reed and Dr. Sandra Snow, both choral directors from Michigan State University.

Three days of rehearsals performance were combined with sightseeing. EPHS students visited the 9/11 Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, and took a cruise around the Hudson Bay and the Statue of Liberty. The students, accompanied by 9 chaperones, also attended performances of Broadway musicals School of Rock and Beau-tiful. EPHS choral director, Dr. Alan Denney, has made four trips with students over the past 12 years. The goal is to make the trip every 3 years allowing all students the possibility of going at least once. “Every group and every trip has been different,� Denney said. “I like to think that I’ve learned how to put the t best trip possible together. The Queen Anne style cottage Lord Dunraven had constructed looks out towards what is today the 18-hole golf course on Fish Creek Road. There, stunning views of Longs Peak and the Estes Valley surround the cottage Lord Dunraven built for himself and his Irish and English socialites to enjoy. For two days, Museum Members can visit the 140-yearold home. It is a one of a kind property to experience.

Lord Dunraven was a world traveler and

sportsman. He was a soldier, author, war reporter, politician, and owner of two “America’s Cup� racers which, at the time were the most famous race boats in the world. He fell in love with the Estes valley in 1872 and began plans to own all of it. Through legal and questionable means, he acquired 6,000 acres of land. He is considered a hero and villain depending on who you ask. In 1876, the Earl commissioned Albert Bierstadt to make a painting on canvas of Longs Peak and Estes Park – today the famous painting resides in the Denver Art Museum. Dunraven built an adjacent hotel in 1877 (which burned down in 1911), and sold his holdings in 1906 to Burton Sanborn and F. O. Stanley.

Should Americans Be Concerned About Russia?

Should we Americans be concerned about Russia? All 16 U.S. intelligence agencies agree that they meddled in our 2016 election, and at least two major investigations are underway to clarify and expose the details. Select media outlets inform us about what President Putin is doing, but most of us are asking, “Why is he making such controversial decisions?�

Is he looking to start WW III? Does he seek to destroy: our Jeffersonian representative democracy; our constitution and rule of law; and replace our cherished freedoms with his "managed democracy"? How does he view the threat of NATO? Why did he invade and still occupies two "states" of the sovereign nation of Georgia in 2008, and Ukraine in 2014 by annexing into Russia the Crimean Peninsula, and why does he continue to actively foment a civil war in Eastern Ukraine where the majority are ethnic Russians choosing to forcibly replace Ukrainian culture with Russian culture? Why did he significantly assist as we and our ally’s invaded Afghanistan after 9/11, and support our efforts since 2001 to destroy the Taliban and al Qaeda? Why is he allied with Syrian President Assad who is guilty of war crimes against his own population? Why is he selling nuclear weapons technology and providing Russian nuclear technical expertise to Iran? Why, why, why?

The guest speaker for the evening will be Estes Park resident Captain Richard "Dick" Life, a retired US Navy intelli-

gence collector and analyst, trained by the CIA and Defense Intelligence Agency, who has devoted nearly five decades to studying and personally observing the USSR, and now Russia. A 1962 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, with a Masters Degree in Russian Area Studies from Georgetown University, and member of the U.S. Army War College for senior military officers Class of 1984, Dick served as an Assistant Naval AttachĂŠs in the U.S. Embassy, Moscow, USSR, 1974-76. Teams of 12 military officers and 15 enlisted were the only Department of Defense intelligence personnel collecting intelligence inside the territory of our number one potential enemy during the Cold War. In 1988-91 he was the Officer in Charge of the NavyMarine Corps human intelligence collection unit living in Munich, Germany, and also working from offices in Berlin and the Persian Gulf during the Fall of the Berlin Wall, meltdown of the Soviet Union (they debriefed defectors and ĂŠmigrĂŠs), and the first Gulf War after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.

Announcing The Centennial 5K Walk/Run-Race To Save The Past

A fundraiser for the new Collections and Research Facility at the Estes Park Museum Sponsors are needed to support a brand-new event, “The Centennial 5K Walk/Run: Race to Save the Past� put on by the Estes Park Museum Friends and Foundation, Inc. to raise money for the future Collections and Research Facility at the Estes Park Museum.

The race will take place on August 5, 2017 coinciding with the 8/05/17 Centennial Celebration happening in Bond Park later that day. Runners and walkers of all ages will begin at the Estes Park Visitors Center, loop around Lake Estes, and return for food and celebration.

Community groups, businesses, and individuals can contribute to the event by sponsoring with a suggested donation starting at $250. Libraries Are Essential In Countering Fake News

of blame to go around. Information fraudsters have shiny tools to make their claims appear genuine. And with social media, misinformation can be re-posted at wildfire speed, going viral into multiple “news feeds” that merely aggregate, rather than analyze sources.

Another trend suggests that our ability to discern fact from opinion is waning.

A Stanford study found students have increasing difficulty detecting bias within the claims they encountered. Said the study’s director, Sam Wineburg, “nothing less than our capacity for online civic reasoning is at risk.”

The library provides full access to all sources. But in the same way that we as a nation have built the foundation of a literate society, we must also champion the goal of achieving a new literacy skill for all: Media Literacy.

In response, some are reconsidering their news sources, others are marching for science, and at the public library, we are encouraging research and informed debate to determine what is accurate, reliable and true. As writer Harlan Ellison bluntly put it, “You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant.”

As we serve readers, viewers and listeners on a daily basis, helping them navigate critically through the omniverse of information at their fingertips, libraries will continue to draw upon our greatest skills and traditions to help citizens guard against falsehoods and scams. Today’s rapid-fire super-connected media world needs public libraries more than ever.

2017 Cinco de Mayo Fiesta On Friday, May 5 Estes Park’s 17th Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration will take place on Friday, May 5 from 5:30-9:00 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. This year’s new location is the Pavilion building at the Estes Park Events Complex at Stanley Fairgrounds.

Food will be served from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., with festive music provided by DJ La Tocada.

Dancers from Ballet Renaissance will offer a special performance that evening as part of the festivities. Activities for children will be part of the evening’s festivities.

Many Reasons To Celebrate During Money Smart Week

By Marsha Yelick, Financial Education Specialist April is Financial Literacy Month, and April 22-29 is Money Smart Week throughout the U.S. Estes Valley residents have a lot to celebrate, as our Library has become the hub for a financial education program that’s now being utilized across Colorado.

It is impressive to reflect: here at the Estes Valley Library, financial learning opportunities have been available every week over the last seven years. Many lives have been changed in the process.

Sometimes, it’s tempting to think that financial concepts are too complex to be learned—and that real change is out of our grasp. Our program has proven otherwise.

Common Cents Counts was launched in 2010, and during its first five years, nearly 500 programs were held, providing nearly 5,000 hours of financial education to local residents. The program was so successful that in 2015, the national funders proposed that the curriculum be expanded to serve other libraries.

Estes Valley Library has had the distinction of receiving three consecutive grants, an unprecedented honor from a prestigious and competitive national program. Now called Common Cents for Colorado, we’re joined by two key partners: CLiC (Colorado Library Consortium), and the Colorado State Library. Libraries across the state and beyond are using the programs to provide financial education to their patrons.

National funders continue to rely on the two-person team who developed this project to such documented accomplishment. I serve as a retired Chartered Financial Analyst, the highest level of specialty in the financial profession, and my

secondary background as an educator helps me put financial concepts into simple terms. And Kurtis Kelly has a longtime association with Estes Valley Library, drawing upon his years of expertise with creative program planning, marketing, and performing arts.

The Estes Valley Library is proud of its ability to share these valuable programs with our town. When residents have the financial tools and resources they need, our community is stronger and more resilient.

The Library is also proud of the achievement of Common Cents for Colorado as it shares useful information and resources across the state. Kurtis and Marsha are in demand as they speak at state-level library events and answer questions from other states. We were even contacted recently by the U.S. Treasury Department for our insights into financial education planning.

Weavers Guild Meeting April 27 The April meeting of the Estes Park Area Weavers Guild will be looking at fiber pieces gathered by members on recent international travels. Dianne Betts will lead off the program and share with the group her recent trip to Mexico where she visited with working Zapotec weavers, spinners and dyers. Following her presentation, other members will share fiber work from other international travels. The program for this meeting will be the same as the originally planned February program that was cancelled due to snow.

Connor Flanery Achieves Eagle Scout Award Connor Flanery, son of Rich and Sherry Flanery, a senior in Estes Park High School has achieved Boy Scouting's highest rank, the Eagle Scout rank with BSA Troop #10. The rank of Eagle Scout is only obtained by 4% of all scouts.

Flanery began his scouting career when his family moved to Estes Park at the age of 7. He participated in Cub Scouts with many of his school classmates. He placed 3rd, 2nd and finally 1st in his last year of the Pinewood Derby Races as part of Estes Park Cub Scouts. He grew up progressing through all the ranks of Cub Scouts and then transitioned to Boy Scouts Troop no. 10 through the Arrow of Light Ceremony in 2010.

Flanery attended summer boy scout camps every summer with fellow scouts in his troop and also attended the big three extreme High Adventure summer camps; Sea Base at Key West Florida, Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, and Boundary Waters in Ely, Minn.

On his way to Eagle Scout, Flanery earned 46 merit badges and was involved in numerous community activities with his troop. Flanery recently fin-

ished his Eagle Scout project and completed all of the service hours and merit badge work required for the Eagle Scout Rank. For his project, last fall he painted the front of the Bobcat football stands with the Bobcat name and logo.

He completed this in conjunction of the Estes Park athletic booster club cleanup of the football field stands. Flanery planned, organized, fundraised and led a team of peers and adults to complete the project. He worked directly with the school district, booster club and athletic department.

Great Pets Need New Forever Homes Mitzi is about two years old and is very friendly with people and other dogs. She is crate and house trained.

Maya is about three years old and 6.5 lbs. She is very sweet. She is a little shaky when she first meets new people but is very gentle. She would be best in a home with older kids or none at all. She is housebroken and does well with other dogs.

As an educator, Peterbark has given presentations at both state and national conference/conventions. He is also recently engaged and excited to begin planning a wedding with his fiancé.

Audrey M. Peterbark, is an organist, pianist, accompanist and singer from the Washington, DC/Northern Virginia area.

She holds both a B.M. and M.M. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy and a minor in voice studies from Westminster Choir College of Rider University. Ms. Peterbark is currently working for the Cedar Hill Independent School District as an Elementary Music teacher at Lake Ridge Elementary school in Cedar Hill, Texas.

Pianist Fernanda Nieto was born in Mendoza, Argentina, where she received her undergraduate degree in Piano Performance. She completed her Masters

Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Ohio University under the direction of Gail Berenson and Alejandro Cremaschi.

Heart Of Expression Art Event And Benefit Sale The first official celebration of Mother’s Day took place in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church, in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna’s mother had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers of the Civil War. Anna was so inspired by her mother, she began a campaign to make Mother’s Day a national holiday.

In that same year, 1,500 miles to the west, a new community of people in the Rocky Mountains was coming together to raise up another church, a gathering place, the Community Church of the Rockies.

Now, 109 years later, our community will gather once again in the very same building, transformed into the Old Church Shops in the heart of downtown Estes Park, in celebration of Mother’s Day. The Old Church Shops is pleased to be the host of the next Heart of Expressions Art Show and Benefit Sale, taking place Friday evening, May 12, with 20% of art sales benefiting the Estes Park Pet Association. “My mum, Maureen Marsh, still owns the building,� says Shannon McGlothlen, owner of Raven’s Roast Coffee Lounge. “We have been in Estes since the late seventies and we are thrilled to be able to do something to support the Pet Association and artists in our community!�

Raven’s Roast will be open during the event, offering delicious coffee & tea, and snacks and desserts.

The building was converted into the Old Church Shops Mall by Shannon’s parents into 1982. “I adore the modern

industrial architecture.� The original church here was built in about 1908 and then the building with classrooms and the building with the sanctuary were combined into a single large building with the Lyons Sandstone facing in between the world wars as a Civilian Conservation Corps project. “The construction to become our little mall was finished three weeks before the Lawn Lake Flood. During a remodel about ten years ago we found that the wooden floors were stamped with the lumber yard that my husband's family started and ran in the nineteen teens, Griffith Lumber.�

In 1927, the church expanded, to the north. That section currently houses the Wild Rose Food & Spirits Co. The Wild Rose Restaurant, owned and operated by executive chef Hubert (“Hubi�) Felden, will offer free appetizers, along with wine and beer by the glass to purchase, during the event.

Classically trained in Europe, Hubi’s culinary passion is expressed in each and every dish that comes out of his kitchen.

As spring approaches, the Estes Valley Community Garden is abuzz with activities. The fence that blew down in February’s Great Windstorm, snapping off

Harry Graham Harry Graham, 65, of Estes Park, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2017 at Sierra Vista Health Care Center in Loveland.

Harry was born to Seymour and Virginia (Lang) Graham on December 14, 1951 in Illinois.

Harry will be remembered for his great sense of humor, love of music, natural gift of hospitality, and endless love for his family and friends.

Harry is survived by his daughter, MacKenzie (Marty) Metz of Loveland,

MacKenzie's mother, Carol Graham of Estes Park, sister Susan (David) Emmons of Portland, Oregon, sister-in-law Cynthia DaRugna of Denver, and nephews Gavin (Alacia) Emmons and Iain (Regan) Emmons. He is preceded in death by his parents, Seymour and Virginia, and brother Steve Graham.

In the Estes Valley, disposal of things you no longer want can be challenging!

Of course we all try to minimize our waste by avoiding one-time use options, using remanufactured goods when we can, and exploring the possibilities for buying used whenever feasible. We run around town taking our leftovers to various “planet partners” who help provide suitable and ecological avenues for gently used and recyclable materials. This minimizes what we throw into the landfill, now expected to close in 2025.

Still, my household has not yet attained “zero waste” – no matter how you define it. Has yours?

It is necessary to be prepared for the impending landfill closure, and that is the purpose of the North Front Range Wasteshed Coalition, consisting of Larimer County, Fort Collins, Loveland, and Estes Park. https://www.larimer.org/wasteshed/ Although most of us have a preference,

all prospects must be evaluated, and available possibilities include: Building a new state of the art landfill, perhaps even something that will capture the methane and convert it to useable energy.

Building a composting facility that will do the same thing for organic waste from kitchens and gardens.

Building a material recovery facility (MRF) to enable recycling.

Arrange to ship our leftovers far, far away and let it be someone else’s problem (although, last I heard, still on our Earth). We could, as county and town, forego the responsibility and let each citizen find his or her own solution, i.e. “Let private industry take care of it.”

What are the pros and cons of each of these solutions? Which would be the easiest, the most ethical, the most cost efficient, for the citizens. And, more to the point, which would be the best?

The Estes Park Sanitation District will be repairing a sanitary sewer main on E. Elkhorn Ave. beginning April 24, 2017 this start date will be weather dependent. Work will take place over approximately 2-3 weeks.

Planned work hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Sewer will remain in service during construction. Construction will begin at 130 E Elkhorn Ave and work will continue west on Elkhorn Ave for approximately 250 feet. Expect possible delays through construction zone.

Also join us April 22 for Estes Recycles Day at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies where we will be hosting Freecycle Estes and Electronic Recycling. We will also be joined by the Rotary Club of Estes Park, hosting the Shred-a-thon, and by the Bestway Painting PaintCare Program at this event. Plus the LWV will host a craft booth at the Duck Race Festival on May 6. Come by and introduce yourself.
