Hallett Peak From Sprague Lake There are many spectacular views of Hallett Peak in RMNP and this is no exception.

Sprague Lake is one of the most popular destinations in Rocky Mountain National Park mainly because of its easy access, excellent parking and relatively flat trails, close to the parking lot. The handicapped accessible walking trail goes completely around the lake.

Make sure to bring your camera! Everyone will enjoy the scenic photographs you will capture at Sprague Lake. This peaceful place is one you won’t ever forget.

Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is the highest continuously paved highway in the continental USA. Due to it’s high altitude, the road must be closed from October through May, due to extreme winter conditions and snowfall. Each spring, crews clear drifts up to twenty five feet deep. They start from both the west side and east side of the park and plan to meet somewhere at the top, near the Alpine Visitor’s Center, 12,000 feet above sea level. Dispose Of Noxious Weeds Free Of Charge The Town of Estes Park will offer free disposal of noxious weeds at 666 Elm Rd. beginning May 16. The site will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weeds may be brought to the site in paper bags, which can be purchased from local hardware stores. Preparation and transport must be handled by the property owner or a private contractor. Trash, tree slash and yard waste will not be accepted through this program.

The Town of Estes Park's Parks Division recently installed informational kiosks at the site to inform residents of noxious weeds in the area, as well as information on the Estes Land Stewardship Association and the upcoming Weed Round-Up, tentatively expected to take place in late July.

From approximately May 16 through May 19, weather permitting, the Town of Estes Park's contractor will be repainting curbs in the downtown area and center and edge lines on Townowned roadways. Moving lane closures will be necessary during painting. Motorists are advised to drive with caution in the areas where crews are working.

Signs will be posted to identify areas of wet paint. Pedestrians are advised to watch for wet red paint on downtown curbs.

Plan Ahead For Spring Run Off In the Estes Valley, spring runoff typically starts in April and peaks in June.

Each spring there is a chance warmer temperatures and higher than average snow packs will result in higher flows and rising water levels along streams and rivers throughout the Estes Valley.

Sudden, prolonged warm spells combined with heavy rains increase the chances of localized flooding. The 2013 flood changed local rivers and streams - some channels are wider and deeper and can carry more water; others are shallower and narrower and can carry less water. The ground also remains saturated from recent precipitation. Local floodplain managers cannot predict the effects of the upcoming runoff, but there is always a potential for heavy flows.

The Town’s Public Works Department has an action plan for minor and major flood events. Each year staff prepare sand bags, equipment, and concrete barriers for short-notice deployment to public areas prone to flooding so that roads, bridges, utilities, and public safety are protected.

Owners of property along rivers and stream are encouraged to clear debris and excess sediments where needed to preserve maximum channel capacity. It is ultimately every citizen’s responsibility to protect their own private property and to consider how risks on his or her property affect neighbors up- and downstream. The Town of Estes Park encourages residents to reach out to their neighbors and work together to address potential problems. Some actions private property owners can take to protect property are: 1. Stabilize undercut and unstable river banks and reduce blockage potential a. Cut down unstable trees (leave stump and roots in place) that could fall and block water flow along the channel or at downstream bridges and culverts. b. Leave existing roots and small woody and vegetative debris on river-

banks to reduce flow velocities and resist bank erosion. c. Apply quick-growing seed mixes to bare stream banks, such as Regreen (Triticum aestivum) and other cover crops (i.e., annual species that germinate quickly). d. Selectively remove problematic debris from river; permits required; contact the Town for assistance. e. Permits for all work in the floodplain are required and available to residents within the Town limits by calling the Town of Estes Park’s Building Safety Division at 970-577-3726.

Any activity in the floodplain, including those mentioned above, require a floodplain permit 2. Prevent or reduce flood water damage using sandbags or hyrdro barriers a. Bags can be placed adjacent to buildings to divert water around buildings and to stabilize banks, not in the river channels as this can interfere with stream flow.

Look for supplies at local hardware stores. b. In the case of an emergency with sudden marked increases in river levels, the Town may open its sand facility for residents to fill their own bags. 3. Consider purchasing flood insurance for peace of mind. Because the Town of Estes Park participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, all properties are eligible to purchase flood insurance, not just those that are required to hold flood insurance by lenders. Purchase flood insurance with your local agent or at www.Floodsmart.gov. New policies have a 30-day waiting period before they go into effect, so the time to purchase is now.

Brothers From Pinewood Springs Drown In Little Thompson River On May 8, 2016 at approximately 12:20 p.m., Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office dispatch received a call that two small children had fallen into the Little Thompson River.

The following agencies responded to the area of Pinewood Springs near Lyons, CO in an effort to rescue the children: Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office, Boulder Dive Team, Longmont Emergency Unit, Pinewood Fire Department, Big Elk Fire Department, Estes Park Fire Department, Estes Park Dive Team, Estes Park Ambulance Service.

Emergency responders located both unresponsive children in the Little Thompson River. They attempted CPR, but sadly, both boys were pronounced dead.

The two young brothers were identified Monday afternoon as Daniel Foreman, seven years old, his older brother, Paul Foreman, was 10 years old. They

both lived in Lyons. The area of the river where they were found is located about eight miles west of Lyons in Larimer County.

The brothers lived near the entrance of The Tubs in the Little Thompson River.

The Tubs is where smooth rocks form pools of water that warm up in the summer. In spring, as the snow-melt makes its way downstream, the currents are strong. Multiple signs in the area mark that part of the river as dangerous and closed to the public.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of these children," said Bobby Moll with the Larimer County Sheriff 's office said.

The Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) Chief Officers and Safety Officers generally respond in their personal vehicles (POV). Fire fighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles; as this allows for faster response by officers and medical personnel to assess the emergency and provide medical care.

May 3 At 4:42 a.m. an EVFPD officer was paged to 1861 Raven Ave. for a CO detector.

At 5:52 p.m. the EVFPD was paged to

700 N. Saint Vrain Ave. for an odor investigation.

May 4 At 9:35 a.m. the EVFPD was paged to 931 Old Ranger Rd. to assist the Estes Park Ambulance.

At 10:14 a.m. the EVFPD was paged to 255 Park Ln. for an MVA. May 5 At 6:54 a.m. the EVFPD was paged to 1825 North Lake Ave. for a possible gas leak/odor investigation.

At 10:31 a.m. an EVFPD officer was paged to the area of 815 Riverside Dr. for a smoke investigation.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On May 8 at 4:39 p.m. police received a complaint about a dumpster in the

1040 block of Big Thompson Ave. and they cited the building owner for a violation against the wildlife protection order for an overflowing dumpster with no locking mechanism and gates left open.

and interviewed family members to compile 126 profiles in this compelling local history. The program is free to attend. Copies of the book are available at the Museum Shop for $21.99 and Museum Members receive a 10 percent discount.

Saturday Shredathon!

The annual spring Shredathon will be held this Saturday, May 14th from 9 a.m. until the truck is full (approximately 1 p.m). The event has moved to the middle school parking lot, just up the hill from the intersection of Manford and Community Drive. Someone will be there to direct traffic. Organizers welcome smaller

businesses who wish to shred documents—we just ask that they make an appropriate donation to our Scholarship Fund i.e. 10 boxes/bags, $100 and so on.

This event is intended to assist the community as well as raise money for scholarships, a winwin situation.

Bookshop Owner Paula Steige To Be Honored At Museum Event The Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation is hosting their annual membership meeting this Thursday, May 19 at 4:00 p.m. The program will begin with social time featuring light food and refreshments. Estes Park Museum Director Derek Fortini will present a brief program titled “Estes Then and Now”, and Friends Board members will perform a series of entertaining readings called “Literary Estes Icons: In Their Own Words”. The performance spotlights many historic figures featured in books published by the Museum’s own

local press, which has helped to preserve and renew interest in our area’s unique heritage and history.

Thursday’s program will take place at the Estes Park Museum at 200 4th Street.

The event is open to all current members of the Museum Friends organization. Anyone who is not currently a Friends member is encouraged to attend by purchasing a membership at the welcome table. Membership levels begin at $30 per year for individuals, or $50 for a family level.

Among the highlights of Thursday’s program will be the presentation of the 2016 Pioneer Award. This year’s recipient is Paula Steige, owner of Macdonald

Book Shop, a business with deep historic roots in downtown Estes Park. Paula has also been a longtime supporter of many civic activities and local nonprofits, and has formerly served terms on both the Town of Estes Park and EPURA board of directors.

Macdonald Book Shop has an extraordinary legacy as enduring family-operated business. It was Paula’s grandparents, Ed and Jessica Macdonald, who launched the business in 1908 as a hardware and general store. A generation later, Paula began helping out as a young girl. “We came to Estes Park for the summer, beginning in 1945,” Paula recalls, “so that my mother could help my grandmother run the book shop. At that time, the shop was only two small rooms and we lived in the building. I was allowed to help once I entered the seventh grade.”

By 1975, Paula and her two children made the move to Estes Park full-time, keeping the book shop open 361 days every year. Paula still continued working as an art teacher, but by 1982, the business had become her full-time job. She married her husband Walt in 1987.

Today, she reflects happily on a joyous career, having successfully run a small business for the last 41 years, serving a devoted customer base that purchases some 30,000 books each year.

Paula Steige will be joined by many friends for the presentation of the Pioneer Award. The ceremony will include a reading of the mayoral proclamation that has been written to honor Paula for her tremendous dedication to the Estes Park community.

“Keeping Bears In Mind” Concert Makes People & Bears Happy!

Last Saturday night’s “Keeping Bears in Mind” concert starring Cowboy Brad Fitch and the TropiCowboy Band was well attended and very well received.

Two hundred people braved the stormy weather of the day to come out and support our black bears and see Brad Fitch perform back in Estes for the very first time in 2016. The purpose of the concert was to raise funds to educate and create awareness of the issues that Estes Valley businesses and residents face with bears in our area. Bears need to be kept wild and we can help by being responsible with our trash and our birdfeeders, outdoor grills, compost piles, etc. By not feeding them, we will help to resolve these issues, thus saving the lives of our resident bears.

The educational tables staffed by Bears Are Us, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, YMCA of the Rockies, The Bear Task Force, the Estes Park Police Dept. Auxiliary unit and Rocky Mountain National Park were very busy and happy to be able to help and inform people. They all felt like they were able to educate folks who weren’t familiar with how we can peacefully co-exist with bears.

It was a wild goose chase. Dad and Mom were with their friends out near the water, enjoying their evening meal while keeping an eye on the young ones, when Dad suddenly looked up, stiffened his long neck and charged off in a fit of pique, honking like a New York taxi driver. Mom scuttled in the other direction, nudging her baby bundles of yellow fuzz toward cover.

A boisterous to-do ensued: everybody started a-flappin’ and a-squawkin’, darting hither and thither, leaving droppings in their wake—and then just as swiftly a calm broke over the group. Dad returned, peace was restored, and all went back to grazing as if nothing had happened. Nothing had happened. It was just a wild goose chase.

I’ve watched this scenario multiple times in the last two weeks, ever since six wee goslings hatched out of their shells into the great wide, beautiful, wonderful world of the pond near where I live. It appears that only one mother goose/father goose couple on my pond was blessed with a family this year, but geese practice the “it takes a village (or gaggle)” philosophy, so the six chicks are well-protected not only by Dad and Mom but by all the neighboring goose/gander pairs. Studies prove that this village approach to goose rearing is why there is such a prolific goose population (plus the fact that the males participate equally in upbringing).

Geese are very caring and affectionate within their gaggle. While on a Tour de Goose, the members of Team Honk draft off the lead of their V formation (called a wedge or a skein—the only way they fly). If one falls sick or is wounded, a few of them retreat from the formation to protect and care for the injured until it recovers or dies. Then they either start a new formation or catch up to the previous group. (They can fly almost 50 miles per hour when they’re in a hurry, so it is possible to catch up since the usual speed is more like 20-30 mph.) (And just soze you knowz, geese increase their flying range by about 70 percent over their individual range by forming the V and drafting off the one in front. Their teamwork is unflappable!)

It’s a dangerous goosedom out there, however. I hear coyotes yip-yipping in the night and wonder if the pack is chat-

ting up its hankerin’ for a goose feast, with little gosling nibblets as appetizers. Foxes and raccoons might also enjoy goose meat (it tastes like chicken), and there are large owls calling in the dark who may compete with the four-leggeds for a gourmet goose dinner. They’d have to be big owls, but owls do hunt geese.

A couple of days ago I looked out my window, hoping to see how much the hatchlings had grown, when I noticed the adult pair of geese wandering rather listless and lost, and there were no balls of yellow down between them. Every so often Mom Goose would let out a lone honk but she sounded like a bagpipe with a hole in its bag. What happened to the adorable goslings?

My hunch is they got snatched up by a turtle. Snatched down, really. A turtle hanging out in the water will get under a paddling waterfowl and chomp on one webbed foot, then pull the bird underwater to face its demise. Six little chicks, all gone. One snapping turtle feeling fat and sassy, burping turtle burps while napping in the warmth of the sun.

I know it’s the cycle of life; survival of the fittest and all that. Turtles gotta eat, same as geese. And it’s not as if there’s a goose shortage out there. (Check out the Estes Park 9-hole golf course for proof.

The profusion of goose poop piles are hazards just like the elk duds!) But there’s something about those cute little fuzzy bunches that draw on my heart-

strings. I miss watching the goose family antics. I miss the warm, fuzzy feeling I got from seeing the single-file parade with Dad in front, Mom in back, and 12 tiny little webbed feet trying to stay in line between them.

I wonder: what did Dad and Mom goose think as they swam in the pond, looked back to take inventory, and saw no chicks in their wake?

“Where’d they go? They were right behind me a minute ago!”

“SOUND THE ALARM!” The ensuing ruckus would be deafening.

Do my feathered friends grieve as I imagine they do or am I projecting human sentiment onto emotionless birds?

They mate for life, and a male will fight to the death to protect his female partner. Could it be that perhaps they have emotions even stronger than ours?

Thinking about it gives me goosebumps.

Thanks To Volunteers Who Worked Duck Race Security The Estes Park Duck Race River Patrol would like to thank all the “Duck Race Security” volunteers who assisted the May 7th, 2016 Estes Park Duck Race.

This year was especially difficult due to the rain, hail, and snow but our faithful crews manned their posts for three hours of true “duck duty.”

The Estes Park Duck Race, run by the Rotary Club of Estes Park, is the largest general charitable fund raiser in the Estes Valley, helping raise funds for over 60 charitable organizations and agencies that benefit area residents.

Corralling 6,199 ducks floating down Fall River from Nicky’s Resort to the Wheel Bar in Riverside Plaza in downtown Estes Park is a large undertaking that was more than ably accomplished by the following volunteers: Charley Dickey; Jason Bostron; John

Town Of Estes Park Light And Power Division Conducts Area Infrastructure Inventory The Town of Estes Park Light and Power Division has contracted a crew to begin taking inventory of the electric system to improve and provide accuracy to GIS maps. The inventory includes poles, power lines, and transformers throughout the service area of the Estes Valley.

Crews began work in the Glen Haven area the week of May 2 and will continue

working in that area through the summer. At times they will access right-ofways on properties to walk out the power lines and collect additional data.

Stepping On Class-Openings Available By: Kerrie Hill, EPMC

The upcoming Stepping On Class is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. There are still available slots open for the class which is held in Meeker Conference Room at Estes Park Medical Center.

More than one-third of adults 65 years or older fall each. Year.

Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury, hospital admissions for trauma, and death.

35% of people who fall become less active.

Stepping On is a program that empowers older adults to carry out health behaviors that reduce the risks of falls. It is a communitybased workshop offered once a week for seven weeks using adult education and self-efficacy principles. In a small-group setting, older adults learn balance exercises and develop specific knowledge and skills to prevent falls.

Older adults who should attend are those who: a) are at risk of falling, b) have a fear of falling, or c) who have fallen one or more times.

Subjects covered include:

• Improving balance and strength • Home hazards • Moving about safely • Community safety • Vision and falls • Medication management • Bone health • Footwear • Sleeping better Classes are highly participative; mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health behaviors to reduce the risk of falls and to maintain active and fulfilling lives.

Manufacturers of hearing aids have been allowing private labeling for over 50 years. Private-label products are typically manufactured by one company and labeled with another company’s brand name. As a society we have become accustomed to private labeling, i.e.

Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore washing machines are all manufactured by Whirlpool. Individuals generally shop at Sears to get a Kenmore product and generally need to call Sears to get this product warranty repaired.

In the world of hearing aids, brands such as Beltone, AGX Audigy, Avada, Miracle-Ear, NuEar, Audiosync and Kirkland Signature-Costco are examples of private label hearing aids made by other manufacturers. Manufacturers want a large market exposure with national advertising and hearing aid dispensers want the hearing aid user tied to a specific outlet. This partnership accomplishes both goals. However, this consumer model may contain drawbacks for the private label hearing aid user.

When an individual is considering purchasing hearing aids, five expectations from the product become important: 1. Is the product a quality product?

2. Is it easy to operate?

3. Can it be adjusted as my hearing changes?

4. Is it easy to repair?

5. What does it cost?

For our folks in the Estes Valley, expectations #1, #3, #4, #5 can be difficult to fulfill with private label hearing aids for the following reasons: 1. Doing research?

The actual brand of the product will be unknown and consumer investigation of the private label brand may not connect you to the technical information about the product you are actually buying.

2. Getting your Hearing Aids Adjusted?

The software is private labeled and you

must travel to a dealer of that name brand to be able to get your hearing aids adjusted. Other audiologists and hearing aid dealers cannot purchase the software to adjust your private label hearing aids. Your resource pool for help is significantly restricted with private label hearing aids.

3. My hearing aid is dead. What now?

Repairs can only be obtained at the private label network provider. If you take your hearing aid to an audiologist or hearing aid dispenser who knows which manufacturer made your hearing aids, the hearing aids cannot be sent in for repair. You must go back to the private label network. When traveling or moving, your repair choices can be significantly limited.

4. Can I cost compare these hearing aids?

Not knowing the manufacturer of the product, limits your ability to cost compare with any kind of accuracy. If the product is a Starkey hearing aid labeled as AGXS, what does the name brand product from Starkey cost? You will not know it is a Starkey hearing aid.

Audiologists in general practices are able to obtain accounts to access to any major manufacturer’s products and repair labs; Oticon, GN Resound, Siemens, Starkey, Phonak, Rexton, Unitron, Widex, to name a few.

Increasing your options to get help when needed and wherever your travels take you is an important consideration when purchasing hearing aids. Private label hearing aids, do they meet your expectations?

Sponsors Needed For Rotary Scholarship Benefit Golf Tournament As temperatures rise, wildflowers bloom and golf courses beckon, it’s time to mark your calendar for the Rotary Club of Estes Park Scholarship Benefit Golf Tournament, set for Saturday, June 25, 2016.

The 20th annual event raises funds for the Estes Park Rotary Foundation Scholarship Fund. Annually, the club raises $24,000 for three, four-year academic scholarships for graduating Estes Park high school students.

The tournament will be held on a Saturday for the second year with the aim of attracting more golfers, Chairman Bruce Carmichael said. The fun will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a putting contest prior to the 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at the 18-hole Estes Park Golf Course.

“We were pleased with the turnout last year on a Saturday and we’re hoping for great participation again from golfers from Estes Park and beyond, ” Carmichael said. “You just can’t beat the view at the 18-hole course, and golfing for a cause, scholarships, adds to the enjoyment.”

Major Sponsorships have been lined up, but several levels of sponsorship are being solicited: Bronze Sponsor ($250), Tee/Green Sponsor ($110), and Junior Golfer Sponsor ($75). Sponsors who pledge $110 or more are rec-

ognized at the event and in publicity prior to the event. Some sponsorships include a complimentary tournament registration.

“Our sponsors make the event possible, and their generous donations to the Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation help fund our scholarships,” Carmichael said.

The Stanley Hotel has committed to a named scholarship again this year, University of Colorado Health will be a Gold Sponsor, and Bank of Colorado will sponsor the Drink Cart. Her Silver Sound The merry month of May began as winter, in a last ditch effort, draped silken white sheets of snow from the summit of Longs Peak down to, through and over the Estes Valley.

Now, halfway through the month, after rain, tender green buds push verdancy up hills and ridges, forcing drifts to retreat, building strength daily as they reclaim summer’s terrain.

“We all have a voice when we create this music; there is a place for everyone.” “I felt pain before playing music together, and now I don’t.” “Playing music like this focuses my attention and keeps me in the present.” “I don’t think I’ve smiled in months. The music absolutely made a difference in how I felt.”

"The music offered extreme peace and comfort near the end of life.” “Live music is very relaxing for me; it took my mind off chemo.” “With all of these instruments to play, it takes me back to a childlike feeling and place; a place of freedom.” “I get chills after singing these songs. It just feels good.”

These sentiments offer feelings evoked from sessions led by board-certified music therapist Nancy Bell, she of the silver sounds. Nancy is a social worker at the Estes Park Medical Center, where she also offers music therapy in the hospital’s inpatient unit, Hospice and Home Health Care. In her music therapy private practice she contracts with Harmony Foundation, Prospect Park Living Center, Estes Valley Library, EVICS Good Samaritan Society of Estes Park, and Foothills Gateway. In addition, she facilitates community drum circles and team-building workshops. And that’s just the beginning.

Many have seen her perform in “It’s Showtime” and various Fine Arts Guild productions (e.g., Mikado, Sound of Music, Music Man, Fiddler, Into The Woods). Children delight in her Early Childhood Music Workshops at the

Estes Valley Library, and lots of local kids performed in years past in shows under her direction. She collaborates with local musicians. She sang for several years in the Chamber Singers; director Rich Dixon says, “She was not only a joy to work with, but her dedication to the Chamber Singers was exemplary.

Her soprano voice is a beautiful instrument. We miss her a lot.”

Nancy states: “Life Rhythms Music Therapy provides music therapy services to improve functioning and increase quality of life. Live music is used in a variety of ways to reach non-musical goals through songwriting, instrumental playing and improvisation, drumming, singing, analysis of songs, or music-assisted relaxation. Examples include increasing vocabulary of a child with autism, improving speech after traumatic brain injury, increasing responsiveness with those who have Alzheimer’s, offering opportunity for emotional expression and to an adult receiving treatment for a life-threatening illness, increasing relaxation with someone experiencing pain or anxiety, and

She majored in speech and hearing sciences at Indiana University, planning to be a speech therapist. While at IU her best friend suggested Colorado for the summer. Nancy landed a job at the YMCA of the Rockies summer camp in 1994, and chose Denver University for her MSW because of two summers in Estes. She loved working in day camps, and moved permanently to Estes Park in 1999. First a YMCA camp counselor, she moved up to assistant youth program director and held that position until 2006, when she was accepted into Appalachian State University (Boone, NC) School of Music for her music therapy degree. She returned to Estes in 2009 to start Life Rhythms Music Therapy.

Bob Gunn: “We were in the Chamber Singers, and we’ve worked on duets. She is somebody you cannot help but like.

I’ve never encountered anything negative about her. She’s a talented singer and actress, yet one of the humblest persons I know. We both take lessons from Betsy Blades---Betsy can’t say enough about Nancy’s voice and attitude toward singing. My only reticence in talking about her is that I may not do her justice. As a singer and a friend, I run out of superlatives. She’s constantly moving, has a lot of energy, is extraordinarily fit—I’ve seen pictures of her roped up in extreme exposure at high elevation. I am in awe of how lucky I was to work with her.”

Nancy Bell: “Estes has played a key role in my life—this town got me back into

singing, and I am eternally grateful. My voice, purpose and performing are a reflection of my personal growth. It’s not about being a better singer—it’s about being a better person. It’s not about being on stage or applauded, it’s more about a larger meaning of how my voice helps me grow as a person. I so much believe in my work’s alignment between social work and music therapy, and it’s important to me that this alignment is reflected in my personal life. It’s the right way for me. How much I love my work!

I’ve been working with my current voice coach Betsy for two years. She has taught me so much about this larger and more purposeful meaning of singing. She moved to Virginia, so now we FaceTime music lessons, which, surprisingly, works beautifully; it’s like we’re having lessons in the same room. Also, I align with her in the purpose of singing. One person I want to make sure to mention is my husband Kurt. He supports and cheers me on in so many ways. I am so grateful for him and is love for my singing.”

Whether it’s pop, opera, folk, blues or show tunes, Nancy Bell owns each song and exudes passionate vulnerability as she immerses in the music. She builds a bridge and we walk across it into her rendition. “It’s who I am. The base is I’m a feeling person, so I connect with the emotions of the song. When I became a music therapist this deepened. My voice is key in my commitment to personal growth—I believe so much in how my voice and singing are part of my personal process.” A lovely building is not an accident, and neither is a lovely human being. It’s all in the design, and Nancy Bell is master of her craft. Estes is better for her living and singing here.

Estes Park Jazz Big Band And Village Band To Perform First Summer Concert

Bassoonist Ray Novy will be remembered at the concert. Ray Novy, a bassoonist in the Village Band for many years passed away on March 8, 2016. He will be remembered during the concert with the performance of “The Lark In The Clear Air,” composed by Clifton Taylor and dedicated to his memory.

The Estes Park Jazz Big Band and Village Band will perform the first concert of their summer season in a combined concert on Sunday, May 15. The free concert will begin at 7:00 p. the Estes Park High School Theater.

The Jazz Big Band is celebrating its 24th year and the Village Band is celebrating its 34th year of performing for the Estes Park community and its visitors.

The Jazz Big Band will come out swinging with “Poor Butterfly” by Raymond Hubbell, followed by the Bobby Timmons swing chart, “Moanin.” Trombonist Curtis Fox will then be featured as soloist on a brand new Curt Wilson arrangement of “Too Little Time,” the love theme from the movie “The Glenn Miller Story.” “On The Sunny Side Of The Street,” by Jimmy McHugh, will then feature Julie Varilek as vocal soloist. A Latin selection, “El Centro,” by Doug Beach will be featured next, followed by Count Basie’s iconic “One O’Clock Jump.”

After a brief intermission, Loren Johnson will start the Village Band portion of the concert, beginning with “American Overture For Band” by Joseph Willcox Jenkins. The theme from the John Wayne movie, “The Cowboys” by John Williams, will be performed next.

Chuck Varilek will then direct the band, beginning with “Albanian Dance,” an exciting composition by Shelley Hanson. Based on a traditional Irish tune, Clifton Taylor’s “The Lark In The Clear Air” will then be dedicated to Novy’s memory. Several of the Village Band members will next be featured in a Dixieland band within the Village Band as it performs “Dixieland Bash,” including Dixieland songs “Just A Closer Walk With Thee,” “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans” and “The Sheik Of Araby.” The band will conclude the concert with the performance of Fred Jewell’s march “Quality Plus.”

Both the Jazz Big Band and the Village Band are affiliate members of the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park. The group has received a Community Service Grant from the town of Estes Park

for the past several years. Some of the music performed at this concert was purchased through the grant awards.

Both performing groups are community bands made up of musicians from the Estes Park area as well as from surrounding communities. New members

are always welcome to perform with the band. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings in the Estes Park High School bandroom.

The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies is excited to announce its 1st annual "Your 10 Minutes of Fame" and Improv Event at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at the Historic Park Theatre.

Please join us on Sunday afternoon, when a handful of emerging playwrights and actors and a lively troupe of improv artists will display their creative artistry on stage.

An important part of the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies' mission is to provide experiences in the performing arts through participation, education, and outreach. This is an opportunity for youth and adults to try their hands as

playwriting, directing, and acting.

Participants will perform an original play (or musical) of no more than 10 minutes in length. Scripts were written by participants, cast with friends and family, rehearsed and now come to life before a live audience!

In addition, under the direction of Jordanne Bradley and Jordan Hazelton, a troupe of high school students will present an improv segment. Warning: there may be some audience participation!

A panel of "judges" will sit in review and offer appropriate awards. Tickets at door are $4 for adults and $2 for youth under 18.

Opening Day At The Village Thrift Shop Was A Great Success!

Things are going great at the new Thrift Shop on Manford Ave. They are now open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thanks to all in the Estes Valley who were so generous with your donations.

Also thanks to all those who stopped by during renovation to give us support.

The five-week renovation effort; spearheaded by Michael Sisk and ably assisted by Charley Cofas and Doug Frisbie was nothing short of miraculous!

Oh, and the supervising skills were superfluous!

Their goal is to be of benefit to the community by distributing all profits to the non-profit organizations in the Estes Valley.

While working towards that goal, we are also trying to be good stewards of the environment by recycling everything that we can. We would like to minimize the materials that go into the Larimer County landfill.

Why do we think of Friday the 13th as unlucky? Well if you do, hang on to your good luck charm as starting in February of this year, we will have three Friday 13ths! I personally think that as children, the number 13 was often spoke of as an unlucky number by our elders so we in turn adopted the silly idea of number 13 as being unlucky. But why and how did that myth start? It could date back as early as an old Norseman tale that told of 12 gods having a dinner party and a 13th uninvited guest showed up. The party crasher was the trickster God Loki who then shot the God of Joy and Happiness, Balder. Then there is the Last Supper where supposedly Judas, Jesus' betrayer, was the "unlucky" 13th guest.

Friday has also been considered an unlucky day in Western tradition. E. Cobham Brewer's 1898 "Dictionary of Phrase and Fable" claims Friday as the day that Jesus was crucified and perhaps the day that Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, according to Christian beliefs. In 1882, of course the horror movies made in the 80s called Friday the 13th....etc., did not help erase our superstitions. As one former columnist of this paper would say…

Balderdash!

Of course it is not smart to walk under a ladder at any time and black cats are beautiful. But just in case, I am not going to try to bake a cake or make a meringue on this Friday 13th.

And I really need to make a meringue pie soon. I needed some lemons for two different dishes the other day and there was such a bargain on a bag of lemons, I succumbed and now I have a lot of lemons and need to use them. But that is for another day. I also have capers and parsley to use up as well. One of the recipes that I needed all of the above for was Chicken Piccata.

Chicken Piccata Serves 4

2 - large whole chicken breasts, cut in halves. ½ cup flour 1 ½ tsp. kosher salt ¼ tsp. black pepper Buttermilk for dipping (about ½ cup) 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 cup of water with a chicken bouillon cube dissolved in it.

Juice from one large lemon 2 Tbsp. drained brined capers 4 thinly sliced green onions, whites and tender green part.

Chopped parsley Lemon rind from lemon, sliced into pieces.

Place each chicken piece between two sheets of plastic wrap and flatten to about ¼ thicknesses using a mallet or rolling pin. Dip in buttermilk and then the mix of flour, salt and pepper, shake off excess. Melt 2 tbsp. of butter and one tbsp. of olive oil in iron skillet and cook two of the chicken pieces until golden brown on each side. Remove and keep warm. Wipe skillet and repeat process.

Discard drippings add rest of ingredients, including lemon peels, except for the remaining butter and parsley. Bring to boil and reduce heat and simmer for about 5 minutes. Whisk in butter and add parsley. Spoon over chicken and serve with pasta.

This was so easy and pretty. Try it, you will like it. I even ate the lemon, cutting it up in small pieces and pairing it with a bite of chicken. And I do not like tart flavors, as my kids will attest.

The other recipe was red snapper and lemon butter sauce. I will give you that another day. I hope y’all are ready to plant your gardens and that the weather agrees with our plans.

May 24 Nonprofit Workshop Budget Writing Basics For Grant Proposals The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center presents a free facilitated webinar on proposal budgeting basics for nonprofit organizations on Tuesday, May 24 from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Computer Lab at the Estes Valley Library.

In this free workshop, nonprofits will learn to prepare and present a budget in a grant proposal. This session, geared to the novice grantseeker, will address budgeting questions such as: • What is included under the "personnel" section and how to calculate it?

• What level of detail do you need to include for non-personnel expenses?

• How do you determine reasonable costs?

• What types of expenses are considered "overhead"?

• What other financial documents will funders want to see?

30th Annual Fishing Derby At Lake Estes Saturday, June 4

The Estes Park Fishing Derby takes place Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m.-12 noon. The derby is sponsored by Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD) in conjunction with the Colorado Division of Wildlife to benefit EVRPD Youth Programs.

All participants must register, or sign in if pre-registered, at the Lake Estes Marina Store. Registration and sign-in begins at 6:30 a.m. on Derby Day. June 4 & 5, 2016 are free fishing days.

In the state of Colorado, no Colorado State fishing license is required on these two days.

A siren will sound at 8:00 a.m. to start the derby. A siren will sound at 12:00 noon to end the derby.

All participants with fish to be judged must return to the Lake Estes Marina Store where final judging will take place at 12:15 p.m. All participants with any size fish should return to the Lake Estes Marina Store at the conclusion of the derby, you could be a winner!

Prizes will be awarded for the “Largest Fish” in four age groups: 9 & under, 10-15, 16-59, 60 & over male and female in each group. Prizes are donated by local merchants.

• Participants cannot fish prior to start-time on Derby Day. • Fish must not be cleaned before final judging.

• One pole per fisherman.

• Fishermen may fish from shore or boat.

Gallery Memberships Are Coming Due; ArtWalk Map Registration Due May 13

The CAC's annual ArtWalk map program, uniting the galleries of the greater Estes Park area since 2009, will launch with the summer art walk map in early June. Four ArtWalk maps, one for each season, will be printed in 2016. In addition, two special map cards - for Jazz Fest (weekend of June 3-5) and for the holiday season of 2016 (mid-NovemberJanuary 1) will be produced.

The ArtWalk map provides a handy guide to visitors and residents alike looking for a way to tour the best art destinations in Estes Park. Included in each map are information about participating galleries along with a map that has locations marked. The maps are dis-

tributed at participating locations as well as the Estes Park Visitor Center.

For a $250 gallery membership, an Estes Park gallery may be included on all four maps for the 2016/2017 season, and the Jazz Fest ArtWalk card. For an additional $25, galleries may be included in the Holiday ArtWalk card.

Gallery participation is first come, first served. If the minimum of 12 participating galleries has not been reached by the end of day Friday, May 13, the deadline for participation may be extended.

Volunteers At The CAC Will Receive Fine Art Sales Training; Special Event Volunteers Also Sought The Cultural of Arts Council would like you to consider volunteering to be a docent in its fine art gallery in Estes Park, or to serve on one of its ad hoc committees to help accomplish the organization's mission of enhancing the quality and accessibility of visual and performing arts for people of all ages.

"A volunteer position at the CAC is perfect for those who love the arts and wish to meet artists and patrons," said Barb Boyer Buck, executive director. "I especially recommend the position of fine art gallery docent," she said. A volunteer in this position would be trained in art sales by gallery owners and artists, she added.

"It's a beautiful, peaceful environment to

learn about art and the artists who create."

Docents are sought to man the gallery from noon to 5 p.m. daily, including weekends. Those who wish to be involved in the execution of special projects are invited to apply as well. These may include serving on ad hoc committees for receptions, fundraising, gallery installations, special event staff, and the Plein Air Committee.

WHAT CHANGES YOU? I had an opportunity to watch the movie, ‘Despicable Me!’ late one evening at a teen retreat I was speaker for in Manitoba, Canada. I chose instead to drive to my cabin that snowy night. I should have stayed for the movie. I slid off the road into the ditch as I drove up the driveway to my cabin. Fortunately a man looked out and saw my car lights shining in the wrong direction and came to assist. I told him I had rented a cabin there. “Oh, you’re the old man in the end cabin?” “Yep, that’s me.” He walked me to my cabin and got help for my poor car in the morning.

Since that missed opportunity I’ve watched “Despicable Me!” on TV several times because I’m a ‘softie’ and it’s a ‘feel good’ movie. It’s the story of ‘Grue’, a low self-esteemed man who tries to finally ‘prove himself’ by becoming the world’s greatest villain by shrinking and stealing the moon. He connives, steals …whatever it takes…to carry out his evil scheme. The ‘feel good’ part of the movie is that this ‘evil’, ‘villainous’ person recruits three unwitting orphan girls to help him. They are precious. He promises to ‘adopt’ them in order to get their help. They come home with him and gradually worm their way into his heart and change sets in. Their needs and his fulfilling of those needs results in a deepening parental affection and love for them, even as their love for him blossoms. The ‘villain’ is totally changed by the power of love.

This pattern is often witnessed in the Bible. John wrote: “We love because He first loved us.” This change was illustrated in the relationships that Jesus formed. James and John, early on, were dubbed “Sons of thunder” due to their explosive tempers. As time went on, like all the apostles, “People took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus.” How they changed! John, the ‘Apostle of love’ urged his followers, “My little children, love one another!”

Many in our day have also been touched by this spirit and have changed in wonderful ways.

Others, in Christ’s time and in ours, show less noble motives for changing their behaviors. In Jesus’ day, religious leaders, wanting to impress people, showed ‘love’ at times…giving alms, praying publicly, acting ‘religious’…when it served to benefit them. At other times, they were hindering Jesus’ benevolent activities, mistreating less fortunate people, judging and criticizing…even crucifying…those who didn’t agree with or ‘respect’ them. They went from good, when it benefitted them, to bad, even vicious, when it didn’t.

As we contemplate current political wranglings, it’s evident we aren’t witnessing a later-stage ‘Grue’-type of people vying for the control of our nation. You and I witness people that act very much like the Pharisees of Jesus’ day. “Now I am going to criticize, judge, condemn”… and, at other times, “Now I am going to show the ‘Presidential side’ of me.”…or vice versa. This, not because someone has been touched by needs and a loving desire to meet needs, of others, but because it is to their ‘political advantage’. I guess that I, like many others, are simply naïve to hope for loving attitudes` that promote greater good, but it does make one feel concern for our nation’s future. What do you think?

The good thing I learn from this is that I need to determine what motivates change in my own personal life, and hope that I make appropriate changes as a result of a growing spirit of love in my heart, and avoid less noble spirits. (Bob)

Whiteboard Management "Results oriented, likes it when things get done, and Open Door policy." These words were directly uttered by our new Mayor, Todd Jirsa. Curiosity drove me to attend the Mayor's Chat on Saturday, May 7th, with about 50 other residents of the Estes Valley. I had some predetermined expectations and views of the Mayor and never any up-close exposure to the man, so it was refreshing to hear his directness.

He can be intimidating, much because of his six-foot-plus height. He is hard to ignore in a crowd, plus he has a commanding voice and what appears to be a strong but educated will and sense of direction.

He is no schmoozer, he is direct and can stare you down if he wants to. He has a firm handshake and is not given to idle conversation or laughable comments. He is direct and to-the-point but, I want to believe, open to others' points of view. He was surprised at the exceptional turnout, considering the meeting on a Saturday and especially Duck Race day. Plus it was in an unusual place, Via Bicycle Cafe in the hide-away shopping center on Hwy. 34.

He opened with his hello and immediately introduced the Cafe's owner, who had an opportunity to talk about his business. That was a nice touch. Future chats will be held in other unique locations, hopefully with similar turnouts and enthusiasm.

The Mayor knows that he is not a household name and wanted to express his style verbally, and showed up in a relaxed uni-

form of jeans and cowboy boots. He informed us that his goals are written on a whiteboard for all to see in his City Hall office. His open door policy should get him a lot of visitors.

His whiteboard campaign promises, which he means to keep, are also there for residents to observe.

When asked about The Loop, he said he feels we should finish the planned downtown developments before finalizing any Loop plans. The new Mayor seemed to be on his game, but wisely had Town Administrator Frank Lancaster there to front many of the questions asked. Frank has proven to be a great asset to this town, and it appears that the Mayor realizes that also.

The 1.5 hour meeting contained questions about bicycles, signage, road repairs, intersection pedestrian crossings, and town water quality. I feel there were good vibes at the chat, and I personally changed some of my views upon hearing him and shook his hand.

If you make no expectations, you won't have disappointments. I say I don't want to be disappointed, but I want our new Mayor to be sincerely honest about the betterment of our community and be transparent in his governing policies. I came away with good feelings about our town's future, but Todd is an unproven unknown, so time will tell. Get to know him, you might like him.

Shelton is 12 years old. His mom died and he didn't have anywhere to go. He is a sweet and loving boy that deserves to spend his last year's with lots of love.

All pets are offered through the Pet Association of Estes Park, a non-profit organization that works to find homes for stray and abandoned pets, control dog and cat populations by funding sterilization programs, educate members of the community, especially young people, about the humane treatment of animals and the responsibilities of pet ownership; and promote community involvement in the use of pets as therapeutic agents (e.g., in nursing homes).

Now in its 48th year, the Big Thompson Canyon Association (BTCA) Pancake Breakfast has become a tradition for many families. A Sunday trip up the Big Thompson Canyon and breakfast in the historic log building spells an enjoyable and inexpensive family outing. Join us this Sunday, May 15 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Advance tickets are only $6 for adults and $4 for children 4 to 9 years of age; tickets are $1 more at the door. Little ones under four eat for free. The BTCA building is located about 1 mile east of Drake on US 34. The Big Thompson Canyon Volunteer Fire Department (BTCVFD) coordinates a charity raffle that includes merchandise prizes and gift certificates from many area merchants and hosts a craft show next door a! t the firehouse; participants are local crafters. Proceeds from the pancake breakfast and bake sale fund the BTCA during the year. The BTCA maintains the building and provides a central gathering place for the local community. Proceeds from the raffle and

crafter fees will help the BTCVFD replace equipment and provide additional support for Cedar Cove residents where Station 7 was lost during the flood.

The fire department has served the communities of Drake, Waltonia, Cedar Park, Cedar Springs, and the Storm Mountain area since 1963. As part of the Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, they work under the direction of Loveland Fire Rescue with Thompson Valley EMS to keep our area safe. As need requires, they respond to mutual aid calls with Estes Park Fire Rescue and the Glen Haven Fire Department.

They worked extremely hard during the September 2013 flood to protect area residents and keep the death toll from escalating as it did in the 1976 flood. EPMC Wellness Program: Dr. Amanda Luchsinger To Present Free Program On Hypertension

Dr. Amanda Luchsinger to present free program.

The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division and the Estes Park Medical Center (EPMC) are collaborating to offer a free program on Tuesday, May 24 at 1:00 p.m. at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. The program will be presented by Amanda Luchsinger, MD, and her presentation will focus on hypertension. Please call or stop by the Senior Center to sign up.

According to Dr. Luchsinger, “Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a chronic medical condition that affects one in three adults in the United States.

Also known as the silent killer, hypertension is a condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is abnormally elevated. The causes vary from person to person and can be difficult to identify.

Certain factors can result in hypertension and put you at a greater risk of developing other health problems such as heart disease or stroke.”

Dr. Luchsinger joined Estes Park Medical Group in 2008 after previously working in Dunedin, Florida. She received her Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed her residency at the University of South Florida. Dr. Luchsinger is board certified in Internal Medicine and provides a full spectrum of adult medicine.

Her focus is on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of medical conditions.

Senior Services Day Trip To Coors Field: Rockies Vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Each year the Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division offers day trips to Denver to enjoy Colorado Rockies baseball at Coors Field. It’s an amazing deal that includes round-trip transportation, parking, and a reserved seat game ticket for only $41 for EPSCC, Inc. members or $43 for non-members.

The second trip of the 2016 season is Wednesday, June 29 to see the Rockies play the Toronto Blue Jays. The trip will depart the Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street, at 10:30 a.m. and return approximately 6:30 p.m. Register at the Senior Center with cash or check payable to the Town of Estes Park by Wednesday, June 15. All trips require a minimum of 10 riders to go.

A portion of the grant funds will be reserved to provide scholarships to income-qualifying families.

After analyzing the survey results, the workshops will be developed and taught by local arts and crafts educator Beth Engel. Engel is qualified to teach children 418, and will structure the classes in a series of at least four sessions, held weekly.

"My goal is to teach children to express themselves through arts and crafts," said Engel, "to learn skills with tools and techniques and by working with many different art materials such as paint, fabric, pencil, basket reed, wood, jewelry and more."

Presentation By Estes Park Museum Director Derek Fortini And Other Upcoming Art Education Opportunities Offered At The Art Center The Art Center of Estes Park is pleased to announce that Estes Park Museum Director Derek Fortini will present from his 2010 Master’s Research Paper titled “The Foundations of the Artists’ Community of Estes Park” with a focus on Charles Partridge Adams (1858-1942).

This presentation at the Art Center on Saturday evening, May 21, 7:00 p.m., is free and open to the public. Adams was a well-known landscape artist who worked out of his 1905 studio, called “The Sketch Box,” once located along Fish Creek.

Referred to as one of Estes Park’s “Veteran Painters,” Adams established a reputation for producing affordable, high quality water color and oil paintings. A large portion of his works featured his favorite locale Derek Fortini of Moraine Park, in today’s Rocky Mountain National Park.

Fortini will describe Adams’ contributions to the early artists’ community before Adams left for California in 1917, as well as talk about Adams’ painting style while taking a close look at some of the oil paintings on exhibit by Jennifer Cline in her featured artist show “A Search for Charles Partridge Adams’ Colorado.”

Derek Fortini is a Colorado native that graduated with his Masters Degree from the University of Denver. As an art history major, with a focus on museum studies, Fortini volunteered for some

time at the Denver Art Museum and worked at a contemporary art museum in Lakewood before coming to Estes Park. He has worked at the Estes Park Museum for nearly ten years.

Other upcoming education opportunities at the Art Center include intergenerational and adult art classes. Art Center members receive a 10% on all adult classes. “Intergenerational” classes are designed to be enjoyed by adults and children together in the same class, but individual students are welcome. Classes are geared for a wide range of capabilities to accommodate age and skill differences, with the ability for projects to be increasingly more challenging for advanced ages and skills. Younger children will be accepted into class if accompanied by an adult.

The A Cappella Choir, a 60-voice auditioned collegiate ensemble, performs throughout the academic year in Iowa and around the country to locations like St. John the Divine in New York City

and the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. The choir tours internationally every four years. Recent tours have included Brazil, Italy and China.

ovation on Tuesday, April 5 when she was announced as Airports Council International's Finance Professional of the Year for North American Large Airports. Honorees are selected for their contributions to the airport's financial performance, growth and profitability; team leadership and superior airport management; ideas and that strengthened the airport's strategic market position; and contributions to the airport, community and industry. Cindy graduated from Estes Park High School in 1976, and is the daughter of Tom and Barby Nichol who live in Estes Park.

Crossroads Ministry Expands Client Services Hours, Effective May 31

Crossroads Ministry will increase the number of hours each week dedicated to serving clients, effective May 31. The extended hours, which are intended to make Crossroads Ministry’s services more accessible for persons in need in our community, are based on results from a recent survey of active clients as well as analysis of historical data relating to case management appointments and other services.

Starting the day after Memorial Day, the schedule for serving Crossroads clients will be Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Regular office hours for administrative staff will continue to be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The expanded hours for client services will open additional volunteer opportu-

Some things we just can’t remember, can we? Like our shoe size, our spouse’s birthday or what we had for breakfast, right? But some our most precious and prominent memories are gathered around music, and particularly song lyrics. Who can’t remember the theme songs from Broadway musicals like “Aladdin” or “Little Mermaid” or “Cinderella?”

The Estes Park Chorale and the Mountain Men Chorus will present a great

So we’re here today via the news media to “Start spreadin’ the news” about this exciting musical extravaganza, opening the show with one of the most famous of all songs from a Broadway musical, “New York, New York” from the show by the same name. We all realize that with the unique Estes Park cultural scene, “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.”

I interviewed Director, Rich Dixon, this past week and he had a lot to say about the singers, the Broadway shows, the arrangements and the overall quality of the pieces to be presented. He has also picked some of his favorite songs from Disney’s vast compendium of work from animated, computer-generated and combinations with live action. For example, he got really excited when he talked about “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from “Toy Story.” Curtis Fox will sing the solo and lead a four-piece band with his trombone. Rod Christian joins him on tuba, Robert Burkhardt on trumpet and Rich Billingham on piano. “It’s a stitch!” he said, and he encourages the audience to “have a good time while you listen.”

Rich says, “She is magically expressive on that keyboard and, of course, we can’t do without her.”

“The Fantasticks” was a very small show, extremely long-running on Broadway with over 17,000 productions over 42 years. There are only a few actors and a piano accompanist, and the themesong for our concert, “Try To Remember” was the highlight. “When grass was green and grain was yellow…..when life was slow and oh, so mellow….when you were a tender and callow fellow.”

There are spotlights on favorite numbers for old and young alike, and the singers would like to encourage you to bring the kids to this concert. “The kids will like the show,” Rich says, and we hope all will hum along to their favorites. So come and join us on Saturday afternoon, 2 p.m., Reusch Auditorium at the YMCA of the Rockies. It’s a production you will surely remember.

Other highlights of this varied musical production are Brad and Kelly Anderson, taking us on a magic carpet ride with “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin” and Bert Bergland’s moving expressions with “Bring Him Home” from “Les Miserables.” Rich says that “Brad and Kelly will show us what Aladdin and Princess Jasmine saw on their trip around the world.” And also, he said, “Bert’s solo sharing the spotlight with the men’s chorus will having the women in the audience all but ready to swoon.”

Money Matters-New Financial Workshop At The Library There’s a new series of classes available at your library that might be just the ticket you need for improving your financial savvy and reducing your anxiety about money.

The new series is “Money Matters I & II” offered on two consecutive Thursday nights, May 19 and May 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the Wasson Room at the Library. The program is part of the Common Cents for Colorado financial education program, but its goal is a bit different than what’s been offered in the past. Rather than investment topics and long-range planning, this series deals with the everyday tasks of money management.

Here are some questions you might want to ask yourself to determine if these two classes are for you.

At the end of month, have you run out of money? (It’s a common problem for many Americans.)

• Do you distrust the financial system, not know or care about your real bank balance, or use alternative forms of financing like payday loans or tax refund advances? (Most people have never had a class on how to successfully use the banking system.)

• Do you avoid opening your bills, miss paying bills on time, use overdraft services, pay only the minimum on the credit card bill or just toss your statements and bills in the drawer without looking? (One out of every four American doesn’t pay bills on time.)

• Do you have enormous credit card and/or student loan debt? (Millennials carry average debt of $54,000,and the average American household carries over $15,000 of revolving credit card debt.)

• Would a financial emergency where you suddenly need $2,000 in 30 days send you into a tailspin? (Almost half of Americans say this situation would be catastrophic!)

• Did you just miss the tax-filing deadline and hope the IRS won’t appear at your door? Or did you file your return and spend your anticipated refund three times before it arrived?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are not alone. In general, financial education does not get much attention, and most of us come up short when it comes to making intelligent decisions about our hard earned money.

Perhaps you don’t give it much thought, but while you’re picking up a few needed items, you’re also accruing huge emotional and economic benefits for yourself and for your community.

First there’s the great psychological benefit. When you shop in Estes, you’re on alert to spot people you know. You exchange multiple friendly greetings in each location. Your quick trip to the store extends as you visit with your neighbor and maybe exchange a hug or two. Even the parking lots provide a place to linger under the beautiful Colorado skies while sharing conversation with Estes friends.

With every local trip we reignite our social connections, improve our mental and physical health, strengthen our immune system, and (it’s a proven fact) even lengthen our life.

And then there’s the huge economic impact of our local shopping.

It happens in two ways. The first impact is called the economic multiplier.

The multiplier summarizes the total im-

pact that can be expected when a dollar is spent in an independent, locally owned businesses.

There’s the direct impact – the spending done by a business to operate.

There’s the indirect impact – as those spent dollars re-circulate in other businesses. And then there’s the induced impact as employees, business owners, and others spend their income in the local economy.

That dollar spent at a local independent store is re-spent in the local area as payroll, goods/services purchased from area businesses, profits spent locally by owners, taxes for local needs, and donations to area charities. The American Independent Business Alliance reports that on average, 48 percent of each purchase at local independent businesses recirculates locally.

As a comparison big box store purchases only recirculate 14% to their local economy. Internet sales, as convenient as they are, take every bit of your dollar out of the community.

The second economic impact comes directly to you in the form of dollars saved on gas and maintenance for your automobile. Every round trip out of Estes Park totals at least 60 miles. Using IRS 2016 standard mileage rate of $0.54 per mile, your minimum extra expense is $32 for out-of-town shopping, not to mention the value of your time and temperament during mountain road construction and urban traffic congestion.

Of course, there are some things you may need that just aren’t available at a locally owned Estes Park business. But take a moment to reflect before your next out-of-town shopping trip. Both you and your hometown might be a little happier if you shopped more right here at home.

Estes Park Women’s Golf Association “Jinx Day” Results Despite gusty winds and a very cold start, 20 EPWGA members teed-off early Tuesday morning. The game of the day was called “Jinx” and just nine holes were played.

This fun format replaces each player’s three worst scores with par for that hole, and then subtracts 1/2 of that player’s handicap. The winners were:

What The Heck Does A Crisis Agency Do? By: Mary Mesropian

Estes Valley Crisis Advocates is an agency that is sometimes hard to define.

Many people think of us as a domestic violence agency. And yes, we do serve survivors of domestic violence. We even have a safehouse as part of our program.

But that’s not all we do. Let’s take a look at what kind of crisis and traumatic events would fit into our program. We serve survivors of crimes against persons: stalking, sexual abuse and assault, harassment, domestic violence, simple assault, family violence between generations, natural disasters, accidents of all kinds (vehicle, climbing, drowning, etc.), suicides and unexpected and unattended death. We respond at the time of crisis.

As a matter of fact, a crisis advocate was among the first responders to the most recent fire that left four families homeless. After the police and fire responders released these families from the scene, we helped to transfer them to the hotel where they would be staying and supplied them with bags filled with diapers, personal supplies like combs, deodorant and toothbrushes, as well as necessary clothing. Our bilingual outreach person, Ericka, met them at the hotel and received information on clothing sizes and also asked about any special needs.

That’s how we found out many of them needed black pants and shoes for work.

We sent out special Facebook notices of what was needed. Four people lost their glasses in the fire. We were able to connect them with our wonderful, local Lion’s Club to help replace them. We were also able to provide a crib for the only baby.

After an event, when things have calmed down a bit, we start our second work: counseling, support groups and followup. A few weeks after the first fire there was another fire which we were also involved in. Our counselor provided counseling to the family and especially the children who needed to release some of the trauma of the frightening, middleof-the-night event by telling their story.

This is one of the biggest things we do: listen to people’s stories. It is through the story-telling of the event that people begin the first step in healing from trauma.

Some of the things Estes Valley Crisis Advocates cannot do is help people who are having a hard time due to personal issues. We do not serve as family or divorce counselors or as substance abuse counselors. We also are not therapists serving people with depression, anxiety or other mental health issues or even physical health issues. This is not our focus. It may feel like a crisis to the person, but for our purposes, we are specialists

for crime and serious trauma survivors.

You might ask us, what exactly do we do? At the initial time of crisis we let the survivors talk and release some of their traumatic feelings. We do safety plans focused on how to keep people physically safe. We’ll put people in hotels if they can’t come into the safehouse or if we’re at capacity. We tell people what their victim rights are if they are crime survivors. We explain victim’s compensation. We help with protection orders.

We share information about the legal system and send in bond memos to the District Attorney that may be the only chance the survivor has to tell his/her side of a story before the offender’s initial bond hearing. We provide safe and confidential housing for survivors of domestic violence and their children. We sit with families who have been impacted by suicide or sudden and unexpected death for those first traumatic hours. We call other family members when necessary and assist officers with death notifications. We sit with someone who was just raped and tell her or him it wasn’t their fault and they didn’t do anything to make that happen. We go to the emergency department and hold someone’s hand and even into a surgeon’s office while a cast is being put on. We are mandated reporters of elder, at risk adults and child abuse. And lastly, and this I hesitate to write because it’s all so close for all of us right now, we sent three advocates to a recent call where children were the victims. One advocate stood compassionately with the father who just lost both of his kids to drowning. One advocate stood with the friends who were witnesses and offered comfort.

One advocate stood with the first responders – the deputies, fire men, EMTs letting them know that they are not alone in this and they too can call us afterwards.

We will continue to do what we do on a weekday, in the middle of the night and on every holiday including Christmas.

We are a community program, designed to deliver care, compassion and assistance to any and every community member who needs us. And we do all of this without charging a penny. Los defensores de las crisis en Estés park es una agencia que es difícil de definir. Mucha gente piensa que nosotros somos una agencia de violencia doméstica. Y si, nosotros servimos a los sobrevivientes de violencia doméstica.

Incluso tenemos una casa segura como parte de nuestro programa de ayuda.

Pero eso no es todo lo que hacemos. Vamos a dar un vistazo a los tipos de traumas y crisis que apoyamos en nuestro programa. Nosotros apoyamos con crímenes que envuelve a las personas.

Acoso, hostigamiento, asalto o abuso sexual. Violencia doméstica, cualquier asalto, violencia familiar entre generaciones, desastres naturales, accidentes de todos los tipos( vehículo, escalamiento, ahogamiento, atropellos etc.) suicidios, muertes entendidas y muertes inesperadas. Nosotros respondemos en el momento de la crisis, no importa el factor, el defensor de las crisis son los primeros en responder como en el incendio que cuatro familias se quedaron sin vivienda.

Después de los policías y los bomberos nosotros apoyamos a las familias en la escena, nosotros ayudamos a trasladar a las familias a un hotel, donde les proporcionamos bolsas de ropa, cepillos de dientes, desodorantes, entre otras cosas personales que ellos necesitaban. Nuestra persona bilingüe, Érika, los asistió en el hotel, recibiendo información de las tallas de ropa y zapatos y todo lo que realmente era urgente y necesario. Fue

así como se dieron pantalones negros y zapatos negros para el trabajo. Mandamos un mensaje especial por Facebook donde mencionábamos lo que necesitaban. Cuatro personas perdieron sus lentes en el incendio. Nosotros nos contactamos con nuestro grandioso club de leones para que los remplazara. También pudimos conseguir una cuna para el bebe.

Después del evento, cuando las cosas están calmadas un poco, empezamos con la segunda parte de nuestro trabajo: consejería, grupos de ayuda y apoyo para seguir adelante. Algunas semanas después hubo otro incendio en el cual también estuvimos presentes. Nuestra consejera apoyo a la familia en especial a los niños, quienes necesitaban apoyo para comprender el trauma del incendió, a media noche ella escuchaba su historia.

Esto es lo que pasa después de un evento traumaticé. Estas son algunas de las cosas que la agencia de defensores de crisis en el Valle de Estes hace, no podríamos ayudar a todas esta gente si no contáramos con el personal tan dedicados y profesionales que tenemos ellos trabajan muy duro. Nosotros no ayudamos a las familias a separarse o divorciarse, solo apoyamos y les explicamos lo que es el abuso. Nosotros no somos terapistas de depresión, ansiedad u otros problemas mentales o problemas físicos.

Crossroads Ministry offers grateful appreciation to our many friends in Estes Park and across the United States who made a special effort to help our “Neighbors In Need” this past eight weeks, in response to a $50,000 challenge grant from a private foundation. Because of your generosity, $76,321.62 in eligible donations was given, enabling Crossroads to qualify for and receive the entire $50,000 dollar-for-dollar matching grant. By rallying in support of our neighbors in need, our supporters have inspired the foundation and confirmed their investment!

This outpouring of support is especially noteworthy since it closely followed a number of donations for families affected by the March 4 fire that destroyed an apartment complex on Chapin Lane

in Estes Park. Donations designated for these families have totaled $13,779.25 so far. In turn, Crossroads has disbursed a total of $15,930.74 support of these families in crisis, including all costs of relocation to interim housing through the end of April.

Paul “Jacob” Foreman Daniel Dmitri Foreman

Paul “Jacob” Foreman, born on June 1, 2005 and Daniel Dmitri Foreman, born on July 8, 2008 to Natalia Foreman and Paul Jeffrey (Jeff) Foreman died Sunday, May 8th 2016 in Pinewood Springs, Colorado. Jacob and Daniel were born in Longmont, Colorado and attended Estes Park Elementary School and Laurene Edmondson Elementary School in Loveland. Jacob and Daniel loved their families, cooking and their pets. Jacob had a sophisticated palate and enjoyed trying new foods while Daniel loved making jello – any color. Both avid readers, their rooms were full of well read books. Jacob loved science while Daniel loved unicorns, pandas and the color pink. They also shared a love of

animals and had memberships at both the Denver and Colorado Springs zoos.

Jacob’s bird, Blizzard and Daniel’s black rabbit, Bun Bun along with fish and three cats shared their lives. Both boys spoke fluent Russian and enjoyed visits with their Russian grandparents via phone, skype and in person. Both boys were firm believers in God, heaven and angels. They are survived by their mother and father, two sets of grandparents and loving cousins, aunts and uncles. A viewing will be held on Saturday May 14, 2016, 4:00-6:00 p.m. and a Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2016, 2:30 at Allnutt, 2100 N. Lincoln, Loveland, Colorado with a reception following.

Geraldine Rose Beers Geraldine Rose Beers, age 91. Born in Kansas City, Kansas April 23, 1925. Died April 29, 2016, Prospect Park Living Center, Estes Park, Colorado.

Geraldine, who liked to go by Jerry, graduated from Lansing High School in Lansing, Kansas, attended Emporia State Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas, and taught school in Emporia during WWll. She taught Sunday School, loved to make jelly and play games-especially bridge, and had the greatest smile.

She loved to travel, and visited many National Parks, so especially loved being so close to Rocky Mountain National Park. She especially loved Sequoia and Yellowstone. She lived many years in gold country in N. California between Placerville (old Hangtown) and Coloma, and worked at the Gold Discovery Museum at the State Park in Coloma.

Always adventurous, she broke her leg mountain climbing in Arizona when

she was in her 70s. She traveled to Europe, Israel, China, Egypt, England, Hawaii and other countries.

She was married to Thomas Mervyn Beers (deceased). They had three children: Trudy Hewitt (Mark) of Estes Park, Tommy Joe Beers of Black Canyon City, AZ, and Cherilyn Louise Beers (deceased). Grandchildren: Wendy (Jonathan) Mullinix of Indian Hills, CO, Chad (Stacey) Hewitt of Westminster, CO, Marcy Deem of Texas, Heather (Raphael) LaPuma of Westminster, CO. Great grandchildren: Andrew Hewitt, attending CU in CO Springs and Jordan Hewitt, of Westminster, CO. Jerry was a strong Christian and attended First Baptist Church in Black Canyon City, AZ for 30 years. In Estes Park she attended Estes Park Baptist Church And Mountain View Bible Fellowship. William (Bill) Paynter, Jr. William Brown Paynter, Jr. was born November 10, 1920 in Fort Morgan, Colorado, to William Brown and Sarah Grace Iles Paynter and passed away on May 7, 2016 at the Washington County Nursing Home in Akron, Colorado, at the age of 95 ½ years.

Bill was the second of four children.

Bill grew up in Brush, Colorado and fondly remembered many adventures in and around his home town. Some experiences included the canoe the “Lorna Doone”. He and his brother constructed it and proceeded to float down the South Platte River from Fort Morgan to Sterling, stopping at sandbars, spending the night and being picked up by their mom. The family also spent summers in Estes Park with his father driving back to Brush during the week and joining the family on the weekends. With his siblings, Richard, Stan and Florence (Floss), they spent their days, fishing, hiking, exploring, building forts, swimming in the Big Thompson River, finding old Indian trails, climbing Longs Peak and loving the great outdoors. Their mother, a registered nurse, kept them all healthy and busy throughout the summer.

Bill graduated from Brush High School in 1938, as joint Valedictorian with his best friend, Jack Petteys, who was a pilot and later killed in WWII. By working summers and after school, Bill saved up money for college. At CU he worked year round at Norlin Library on the Boulder campus for 30 cents an hour until he graduated. He was very proud of the fact that after graduating from high school, he took no money from his parents.

He was accepted into the Navy on April 15, 1942 as an Assistant Paymaster with the Rank of Ensign. After graduating with honors from CU with a degree in Business Administration and a major in accounting, his orders sent him to the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York. While in New York, he met his future wife, Marguerite Nielsen Rye (Peggy). They were married on March 2, 1943 at the Eben-Ezer Chapel in Brush, Colorado. Bill spent his time in the service in Melbourne, Australia where he was the Paymaster. After 18 months he was allowed to briefly return home to Brush where he got his first sight of their son, William Brown Paynter III, born on December 2, 1943.

Bill was honorably discharged from the Navy on February 17, 1946.

Bill was accepted at both Harvard and Yale Law Schools, but decided on Yale as they were the first to accept the GI Bill. Their second child, Marguerite

Grace (Peggy Ann) was born in New Haven, Connecticut October 5, 1946.

The family moved back to Colorado where Bill joined his brother Richard and his father at the Law Offices of Paynter, Paynter & Paynter. While in Brush, their third child, Roxann Rye, was born on August 4,1953. Alonzo Petteys, his friend Jack’s father, asked Bill to come work for him at the Citizens National Bank in Akron as Cashier. He was later promoted to Executive Vice President. In 1962, Mr. Petteys started a new bank in Sterling and Bill moved his family to assume duties as President of the First National Bank of Sterling. After Mr. Petteys died in 1970, his family sold the Sterling bank and Bill moved back to Akron where he returned to the practice of law with Frank D. Allen and later with Kevin Hoyer.

During his practice of law in Akron, his service included AkronTown Attorney and Washington County Attorney. Believing in term limits, he also served only one term as mayor for the Town of Akron. Bill was a member of: the Sterling Elks Club, the Rotary Club of Akron, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8064 in Akron, The Akron American Legion, The Colorado Bar Association, Akron Masonic Lodge, was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Estes Park.

At the age of 89, Bill retired from his law practice, turning over the reins to his granddaughter, Kelly Hall Hansen.

He and Peggy moved to their beloved cabin in Estes Park, Colorado, where they spent five years, reading books, keeping apprised of the upcoming Presidential elections, gazing at Longs Peak every day, and just plain watching the snow fall.

He is remembered as a man slow to anger, quick to forgive, stubborn, a great boss, hard-working, a very nice man, and careful with his words.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 73 years Peggy of Akron, his son Bill (Sue) of Phoenix, AZ, his daughter Peggy Ann Cummings (Wendell) of Sedalia, CO, and his daughter Roxann Hall (Terence) of Akron, his seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, his sister Florence Beck of Ventura, CA, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends and clients throughout Northeastern Colorado.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the United Methodist Church of Akron.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Akron Public Library.

Residents Have Concerns Over Griffith Court Proposal Dear Editor, As long time residents of the Griffith Court area in Estes Park we have great concerns over a proposed development plan for four new rental properties at 1120 Griffith Court, the Robison Cabins Proposal. This plan will be reviewed by the Estes Valley Planning Commission on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. in the board room of Town Hall.

Our issues with this development plan include 'Density' or overcrowding of this property with a proposed additional 16+ renters in one addition on to the existing home, and three new cabins on this small 3/4 acre property. Existing regulations for our area's Al Zoning on Density need require total compliance from this proposal. The increase in noise, parking, and traffic will be a detriment to our quiet residential neighborhood.

In addition, over the past five years of vacation renters at this property we have found it unmonitored for the number of persons allowed, their irreverent pres-

ence with loud late night parties, garbage strewn about, and their total lack of concern or manners for the 'real' Estes Park residents' homes.

Other key points inaccurately or improperly proposed, or not at all addressed in this Development Plan are: actual increased traffic numbers, road damage and upkeep, Storm and Water Drainage ways, Natural Spring flood management, Wildfire Management as this property is surrounded by open space, emergency vehicle access to current residents, and the encompassing environmental and wildlife affect.

We invite our neighbors in other areas near Mary's Lake Road to support us and our concerns by attending this Estes Valley Commission Planning meeting to oppose this ill-planned and greedy tourist and vacation rental proposal.

Thank You For Help On Community Clean Up To The Editor: On Saturday, April 30th, 2016, the weather decided to alter our plans for the annual Community Cleanup Day. A collaborative effort of the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District and the Rotary Club of Estes Park, this annual event brings together many clubs, scout troops, Park volunteers, and church groups to clean the rivers, lakes, highways, and parking areas of the winter trash.

With the road sides and river ways covered in snow, an alternative was quickly developed. All groups were notified to

stop by the Visitor’s Center to pick up bags and vests, and then to clean their assigned area as soon as the snow melted.

We want to thank Starbuck’s for their offer to furnish the coffee and hot chocolate—hopefully next year—and their help by cleaning up the downtown area around their store.

We want to thank everyone who volunteered and carried on their efforts this week. Thanks to you we are ready for our visitors again this year.

She says "western heritage" is the "foundation" of Estes Park, but I think most would agree that the natural environment of Rocky Mountain National Park is the foundation of Estes Park.

This development sits adjacent to the Rock Inn and the Park headquarters area. The Park has a letter on the EVPC site opposing this project for the noise, light pollution, air pollution from a smokehouse and various chemicals blowing into the Park, and the fact that their housing is next door to this noisy development. The food products would bring wildlife from the Park, and the 250 parking lot for the 750 patrons every night would bring fumes from diesel buses, and urbanization of the little Mills Road, cutting off parking for the Rock Inn. Community Center Project Needs Changes To The Editor: This letter is in regards the current Community Center project. The project is the result of Ballot Issue 1A and is a collaboration between the EVRPD, the School District, the Town and others.

This project has the potential to make a positive impact on our community unlike anything in recent memory.

Unfortunately, the current state of this project will likely result in a facility that is not nearly as good as it could be.

The current design is missing many amenities that are found in nearly any facility of this type: a hot tub, sauna, racquetball court, and adequate gymnasium space. Instead, there is a significant amount of unnecessary duplication in order to create a separate Senior Center space. The current plan duplicates fitness rooms, office space, changing areas, flex space, bathrooms, programs, staff, lounge areas, entrances, etc. This results in nonsensical things, like 17 bathrooms, not toilets, entire bathrooms, many with several stalls. This duplication takes up resources that are needed to make this a great facility.

Most worrisome is that there is little vision for this project. The design has been â&#x20AC;&#x153;by committeeâ&#x20AC;? and not a reflection of

the tremendous feedback that was given by the community early in the project.

There is little passion to create a wonderful space, instead there is fatigue and awkward compromise.

To date, and after talking to as many people as possible, I have not encountered a single defender of this unnecessary design. However, I have encountered a bureaucracy not particularly motivated to improve things. This is simply shameful. We have only one shot at getting this right. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m asking the Town Board, EVRPD board, and various staff, to come together and fix this. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m asking members of the community to demand better and to speak out.

The EVRPD board is ultimately responsible for implementing changes to the project while the Town Board needs to not only change its requirements but also ensure that we are getting the best Community Center possible.

We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get much thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s focused on the community as a tourist town. But this is an opportunity to create something truly wonderful for residents, something that can bring us together and improve our lives in a wide variety of ways.

EVRPD Upcoming Summer Sports And Events Little Hitters (3 & 4 year olds) Little Hitters is a developmental baseball program for 3 & 4 year olds (co-rec).

100% parent/guardian participation is required. There are 6 Thursday afternoon sessions. **Roster Size: There must be a minimum of 12 registered participants by the end of registration deadline to ensure the program goes. Program Dates: 6/9, 6/23, 6/30, 7/7, 7/14, and 7/21. There is no Little Hitters on 6/16 due to Ride the Rockies. Program Times/Location: 4:30-5:15 p.m. at Stanley Park. Equipment: Each player will receive a MLB team replica t-shirt. Players should wear athletic clothing (encourage black shorts/pants), gym shoes or cleats.

Baseball mitts and soft or plastic bats are not required and are optional. No metal or wood bats. All other equipment is provided. End of Season Potluck: Thursday, July 21. There will be an end of season potluck with all the youth baseball teams the last day of baseball. CARA Track CARA Track is Colorado's Premier Recreational Track Program. The EVRPD is one of many recreation agencies from all around the state that are a part of this program. It is for all boys and girls, ages 5-16, to participate in a healthy summer activity. Practices are held twice a week locally, Tuesday and Thursday, 8-9 a.m., at Bobcat Stadium.

There are five meets in various Front Range locations and ALL meets are *optional. Practices start June 7 and the last meet is July 23, which is the State Meet.

There are separate boys and girls divisions. Age as of July 26, 2016. Registration Dates/Fees: Registration is from 4/25/16-5/18/16 and is $40 In-Dis-

trict/$50 Out-of-District. No late fees, however registering on time is important to secure a spot on a team.

Rockies Skill Challenge The Rockies Skill Challenge is a FREE, state-wide event, for youth to participate against their peers in throwing, base running, and batting. The Rockies Skill Challenge is Saturday, June 18, 10 a.m., at Stanley Park. There are separate boys and girls divisions for ages 6-13 years old (age as of 12/31/16). The first place winners in each age group and division advance to the Sectional Competition. The winners of the Sectional Competition advances to the State Championship at the Coca-Cola All-Star Park in Lakewood and receives tickets to the Rockies game. Volunteers are needed to run this event.

Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp This summer, the EVRPD will be bringing in your favorite soccer camp with the coaches from British Soccer Camp! Camp will be from August 8-12, just in time to get ready for the fall league! Camp offerings will be: First Kicks (3 years old), 11am-12pm, $95; Mini Soccer (4 & 5 years old), 9am10:30am, $105; Half Day (6-14 years old), 9am-12pm, $145; and Golden Goal (6-14 years old), 1-3pm, $50. All campers registered by the deadline will receive a soccer ball and camp t-shirt.

All campers who register 45 days prior to camp will receive a replica British Soccer jersey! The EVRPD is also looking for host families for one or more of the coaches. Any host family will receive a rebate of $80 towards the cost of their camp fees **Please note, registration will be done directly through Challenger Sports on their website at challengersports.com. Register online NOW! EVRPD will not be handling registration for this program.

Coaches/Umpires Wanted: EVRPD utilizes volunteer coaches to coach baseball teams. If you are able and interested in coaching, we will waive your child’s registration fee (head coaches only, one child only), you will receive one free team photo, a coaches shirt and ballcap, and an EVRPD coffee tumbler. A coaches meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 6 p.m. at The Youth Center & Recreation Offices. The EVRPD is also looking for umpires for both our youth baseball program and travel baseball program. Paid or volunteer positions are available for umpire positions.
