Clearing Trail Ridge Road In RMNP Trail Ridge Road is a stretch of U.S. Highway 34 that traverses Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park, Colorado in the east to Grand Lake, Colorado in the west. The road crosses the Continental Divide and reaches a maximum elevation of 12,183 feet. Trail Ridge Road is closed during the winter, and remains closed until late spring or early summer depending on the snowpack. On May 12th, 2016, we were fortunate to record the massive snow plows and rotary plows clearing the 19 ft. high snow drifts on a portion of this 48 mile stretch of highway. Parking Enforcement Begins Memorial Day The Estes Park Police Department will begin enforcing parking compliance in public parking areas beginning Monday, May 30. Public parking areas include free parking lots and on-street parking with all-day, three-hour and 30-minute time allowances. Motorists are encouraged to refer to parking lot signage for site-specific information and exceptions.

Community Service Officers, who will be visible downtown beginning Memorial Day weekend, can provide general information and directions to parking areas. Permits are available for extended parking privileges for qualifying residents who live in the downtown area.

Human-bear conflicts are a fact of life in Colorado, but with some simple actions, residents of bear country can help to significantly reduce those conflicts.

The biggest issue in conflict situations is the availability of human sources of food -- garbage, pet food, livestock food, compost piles, bird feeders, chicken pens, etc.

Bears have a phenomenal sense of smell and can pick up odors of food sources from miles away.

Estes Valley residents play a major role in keeping bears wild, we can help by being conscientious and not leaving any types of food available to bears.

Please, follow these tips to keep bears out of trouble and to reduce conflicts: • Obtain a bear-resistant trash can or dumpster. Keep garbage in a well-secured location; and only put out garbage on the morning of pickup.

• Clean garbage cans regularly to eliminate food odors. If you don't have secure storage, put food scraps and items that might become smelly into the freezer.

Then put them in the trash on pick-up day.

• Don't leave pet food or feeding bowls outside.

• After you barbecue, make sure to clean your grill, each and every time.

• Attract birds naturally to your yard or garden with flowers and water features.

For those who use bird feeders, suspend them high above the ground so that they're inaccessible to bears; clean up beneath them every day and bring them in at night.

The Town of Estes Park is offering $250 sponsorship opportunities to businesses and organizations wishing to provide support and receive a business listing on the shuttle system maps.

Estes Park’s Free Shuttles transport approximately 90,000 riders per year to more than 60 stops throughout Estes Park and to Rocky Mountain National Park. Participating sponsors receive a recognition listing on 42,000 printed shuttle maps/schedules and at www.estes.org/sponsorshuttles. A sponsorship application is available at www.estes.org/sponsorshuttles. Eleven sponsorship opportunities remain on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications must be received no later than May 20.

Be Aware And Use Caution During Elk Calving Season Elk calving season takes place each spring. During this time, female elk, or cows, become irritable and highly protective of their young calves. Though they may look harmless, like the bull elk during the rut, cows are extremely dangerous during calving season. Known calving areas should be avoided and caution should be exercised at all times during calving season.

The bird sanctuary along the Lake Estes Trail is a common place for the elk to give birth, however births can take place in any area. For your safety it is important to obey the “trail closed” signs and take a different route. Be watchful in

your neighborhood and around your home. People have been injured at their homes by walking out the door and unknowingly getting between a cow elk and her calf.

Helpful tips: • Be aware of your surroundings. Elk are everywhere and you never know when you may be near a cow and calf.

• If you see that a trail is closed during calving, obey the warning and head the other way.

• Elk are wild animals which must be observed from a safe distance to

avoid injury or death. If an animal is carefully watching you and appears “jumpy” when you move, you are too close.

• Keep pets secured on a leash and do not allow them to bark at, lunge at, or chase wildlife.

• Never block traffic. Move your vehicle to a safe place completely off the roadway to watch elk.

• Elk know no boundaries, but people do. Respect private property when viewing wildlife.

• Mule deer does can also be aggressive during fawning season, which typically occurs just after the elk calving season.

• Be sure to supervise small children near elk.

Town Board To Consider Electric Rate Study May Through July To ensure continued high-quality utility services and plan for future upgrades through capital improvement projects, the Town of Estes Park periodically reviews the cost of providing services as well as projected revenue – the rates paid by customers. The Town’s public electric utility is a cost-based entity that relies solely on user fees to operate. Costs and revenues must be balanced in order to maintain operations and keep utilities in line with ever-increasing federal standards. Rate studies also ensure equitable rates among customer classes, so that one customer class does not subsidize another.

Several upcoming public meetings will include electric rate discussions. Another rate study was postponed due to the 2013 flood, when the Town opted to maintain its rates through the first phases of flood recovery.

Municipal electric utilities like the Town of Estes Park involve two major operations – the distribution of electricity and capital improvements to the system. The following system improvements are needed: 1. Moving overhead lines underground in the Marys Lake, Baldpate Inn and Lily Lake areas, including along the Homer Rouse Trail. Other areas like Little Valley are being replaced with overhead tree cable, which increases wildlife protection and power quality.

2. Coordination in 2017 and 2018 with Public Works as MacGregor and Big Horn Avenues north of Wonderview Avenue are rehabilitated – these power lines will be moved underground. In addition, a portion of Fall River power line as well as the Goblin’s Castle Road line will be replaced with tree cable.

Water Division Upgrades Axminster Lane Water Line The Town of Estes Park’s Water Division will be performing water line upgrades along Axminster Lane tentatively beginning Friday, May 20 and projected to continue through the week of June 13.

Construction will begin at the intersection of Peak View Drive and Axminster Lane and progress northward along Axminster Lane. The work will span at least to the intersection of Axminster Lane and Sunny Mead Lane. Time permitting, work will continue north from Axminster Lane's intersection with Sunny Mead Lane to the intersection at Pine Knoll Drive.

Minimal water service interruptions are expected for a few residences in the area.

Crews will provide advance notice to affected customers ahead of time whenever possible. This is an opportunity to upgrade

and improve a section of aging and undersized infrastructure with added fire hydrants prior to street improvements that will be conducted by the Public Works Department this summer.

Daytime through traffic will be detoured along Sunny Mead Lane. Access for local property owners will be maintained. Roads will be reopened each evening and on weekends with excavation areas being fenced and barricaded for public safety.

Crews are busy up on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park getting the road ready to open for the summer season.

Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved highway in the United States reaching an elevation of 12,183 feet. The entire road traverses the park for 48 miles. It travels through the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park, entering a world of rare alpine beauty and incredible scenic vistas. About 11 miles of the road is above treeline. Trail Ridge Road was completed in 1932 and connects the

gateway communities of Estes Park and Grand Lake, Colorado. The road celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2007.

Plow operators normally begin clearing the snow in April. Crews from the westside of the park and crews from the eastside of the park move along the road and eventually meet at the Alpine Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is the highest in the National Park Service, sitting at 11,796 feet above sea level. Spring storms often impact plowing activities. Plow operators can encounter drifts from 18 to 22 feet.

The central portion of Trail Ridge Road historically opens on Memorial Day weekend, weather permitting. The average winter closure date has been October 23. The earliest date the road opened was on May 7, 2002.

On May 7 at 10:26 p.m. police stopped a driver at Summit Drive and Big Thompson Highway for a defective head lamp. Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver showed signs of impairment and the officer discovered he had a BrAC of .075. He was charged with DWAI and a defective vehicle and later released to a responsible person.

On May 8 at 7:22 p.m. police were called to a disturbance at 1631 Avalon Drive and upon arrival, charged a 19 year old male from that address with first degree arson. He was transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

On May 9 at 1:28 p.m. police issued a citation for a wildlife protection ordi-

nance violation at 537 Big Thompson Ave. for failure to secure a trash container.

On May 9 at 10:21 p.m. police received a REDDI report of a driver at 333 E. Wonderview Ave. Upon contacting the 71 year old female driver from Nashua, New Hampshire police determined she was driving under the influence of alcohol. Blood alcohol test results are pending. She was issued a summons and released.

On May 10 at 2:23 a.m. police stopped a driver in the 400 block of MacGregor Ave. for a lane use violation. Upon further investigation, the 29 year old male driver from Estes Park was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol with a BrAC of .136. He was charged with DUI, DUI per se and transported to Larimer County Detention Center.

The Estes Valley Fire Protection District (EVFPD) Chief Officers and Safety Officers generally respond in their personal vehicles (POV). Fire fighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles; as this allows for faster response by officers and medical personnel to assess the emergency and provide medical care.

May 8 At 12:31 p.m. the EVFPD and EP Dive was paged to provide mutual aid to Pinewood Springs Fire Protection District.

At 7:35 p.m. the EVFPD was paged to 1631 Avalon Dr. for a stove fire.

May 9 At 3:49 p.m. the EVFPD was paged to 2542 Big Thompson Ave. for a MVA. May 11 At 1:13 p.m. an EVFPD officer investigated smoke coming from the area of Riverside Dr.

May 12 At 4:45 p.m. the EVFPD was paged to 356 E. Elkhorn Ave. for an elevator alarm.

May 13 At 4:04 p.m. the EVFPD was paged to 156 W. Wonderview Ave. for a ruptured gas line.

At 4:43 p.m. an EVFPD officer was paged to the area of Wildfire Rd. for a smoke report.

At 7:53 p.m. the EVFPD was paged to 105 Cherokee Ct. to assist the Estes Park Ambulance.

At 10:24 p.m. an EVFPD officer was paged to 2625 Marys Lake Rd. for a fire alarm activation.

May 14 At 8:55 a.m. an EVFPD officer was paged to 514 Stanley Ave. for a detector activation.

At 11:33 a.m. an EVFPD officer was paged to the area of Fish Creek Rd and Highway 7 for a smoke investigation.

Police Safety Fair This Saturday!

Estes Park welcomes acclaimed author Peter Kageyama to share the insight and research from his book “For the Love of Cities: The Love Affair between People and Their Places” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25 at Estes Park Town Hall.

Recognized as a Top 10 book in urban planning, design and development, “For the Love of Cities” explores the emotional connections that people form with places and how tapping into those connections can benefit the larger community.

Kageyama writes on his website: “If cities begin thinking of themselves as engaged in a relationship with their citizens, and if we as citizens begin to consider our emotional connections with our places, we open up new possibilities in community, social and economic development by including the most powerful of motivators—the human heart—in our toolkit of city-making.”

At the ‘For the Love of Estes’ event Kageyama will share his perspective on Estes Park, creative ways to get funding for projects and how we can cultivate city love of individuals and channel it into community development.

Cross-legged on a cushion. Back of hands resting on knees, tip of each middle finger touching pad of corresponding thumb. Eyes half-closed. Tongue pressed against roof of mouth. Inhaling slowly through nose. Exhaling, humming quiet and low. “Ommmmm.”

Repeat. “Ommmmmm.”

If this sounds familiar in a ’60s sort of way, you were probably part of the Transcendental Meditation movement during the hippie era. You wore long, flowing skirts and beards (probably not at the same time back then. Today? No problem!) and said things like “Far out!” and “Groovy.”

Meditation has grown up since the days when the Beatles were buddies with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Today there are many varieties of meditative practice and most are relatively mainstream. The overarching exercise with all of them is to repeat a mantra, silently or aloud.

A mantra is a spiritual chant used to keep the mind focused on nothing. It sounds easy, doesn’t it? Think about nothing! Not why the neighbor is using a leaf blower in May (or ever, really. Leaf blowers just blow unwanted stuff out of your yard and into somebody else’s so they have to deal with it. A leaf blower doesn’t make that stuff go away, it just moves it around. Hey, what’s with the leaf blower anyway? Try using a shovel on that white stuff, buster. Wait…don’t think about it! We’re meditating.) So, don’t think about leaf blowers or grocery lists or even something positive like what we’re thankful for. Just don’t think.

That’s meditation.

During meditation we are supposed to empty ourselves so that something awesome and powerful can fill the empty space in our head. Answers come. Peace washes in. Calm settles over.

That’s why we need a mantra. When our mind wanders, which it always does during meditation, we turn our thoughts back to our chosen chant and say it in rhythm with our breathing, and think of nothing but our numinous sound. Then good things happen, although often we can’t see it until we look back later.

OM is the most common of the mantras and is considered the most powerful as well. Some believe the syllable has a beneficial effect on our nervous system—and might even help plants

grow. It is pronounced by stretching out three syllables while keeping them together, sort of like pulling taffy: ahhhh—ooooh—mmmm. Past— present—future (the three worlds in the soul). Creation—preservation—transformation (the three divine powers). Immortality—omniscience—joy (the three essences in one spirit).

Far out!

I know, it’s Twilight Zone do-do-do-do, floaty, way out there. New age-ish. But there’s something about it that I like, too.

It grounds me; makes me feel like I’ve come home.

My mantra isn’t the syllable OM, however. Years ago, when I attended centering prayer sessions lead by Mary Ann Kundtz, I selected a different sound as my personal mantra. I wanted to find a chant that would do for me what the word OM does for others, and tried out several words and phrases during quiet contemplation. Over time, one word surfaced that seemed perfect. It brings me comfort, warmth, and a sense of well-being. As Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds as it may seem, this one word makes me feel like I’m being hugged when I return to it again and again. My mantra comes from a book my brother gave me years ago and is one of my all-time favorites.

Translated from Gaelic, the book is called “Twenty Years A-Growing” by Maurice O’Sullivan, copyright 1933.

Some mantras, such as OM, are intended to be chanted aloud. The vibration from the sound can enhance the meditation experience. Other mantras are very personal and not intended to be shared. Ergo, mine stays deep within me.

Don’t worry, I haven’t gone all Tom Cruise on you and am not jumping on sofas to express my affection for my mantra. I haven’t recently flipped my lid—I’ve used this unique word in prayer for more than 10 years. It is personal and is always with me so when I need a lift— a strength from with—I draw upon this one word, slow my breathing, and feel a calm come over me.

Besides that, my houseplants are thriving.

Guest Speaker T.R. Reid To Present At League Of Women Voters Meeting May 23 Noted journalist and author, T. R. Reid, will discuss Amendment 69, ColoradoCare, at this month's League of Women Voters - Estes Park meeting on Monday, May 23, from 5-7 p.m. at the Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Avenue.

Mr. Reid is the Chairman of the Colorado Foundation for Universal Health Care, the state-wide citizens' campaign working to provide health care for every Coloradan. He is the author of "The Healing of America" (2009) about his journey to six countries around the world to learn about how universal health care works for them. He is a former reporter for the Washington Post and served as bureau chief for that paper in London and Tokyo. His recent Frontline program on PBS awakened many Americans to the advantages of universal health care.

What is ColoradoCare? In 2015, volunteers all over the state of Colorado col-

lected more than 150,000 signatures for a resident-owned, non-governmental health care financing system. This system is called ColoradoCare and is more formally referred to as Amendment 69.

It will be on the November ballot. If the Amendment passes 100% of residents will be covered, leading Colorado to be the first state in the U.S. to achieve universal health care. Health benefits include primary, mental health, and specialty care, including dental. Patients can choose their primary care providers.

Collectively, Colorado individuals and businesses would save $4.5 billion.

Why are we having a program on it?

The League of Women Voters of Colorado has endorsed Amendment 69, yet most of us know very little about it.

Estes Outreach Announces Student Scholarships For Computer Programming Class I am thrilled that hiking season is here (although, as I type this, fat snowflakes are falling outside of our living room windows – May in Colorado!). We try to sneak in hikes year-round, resorting to the lower elevations that turn muddy on sunny winter days, but there’s nothing like being able to lace up your hiking booths, throw on a light jacket, and tramp into the backcountry again. Jordan and I took a stroll to Bridal Veil Falls last Saturday and spotted only one tiny patch of snow way off in the trees. Cow Creek was rushing and little green buds were appearing on the aspens… Spring was definitely in the air!

As we hiked to and from the falls, I noticed that the people we passed were all well-versed in “hiking etiquette.” I’ll admit, I am someone who notices how other hikers are outfitted (usually because I’m on the lookout for new gear) as well as how they behave on the trail.

As a kid, it was instilled in me that I needed to be respectful to both the wilderness and others who were out enjoying it. Hiking was and is such a meaningful activity for me; I consider it a responsibility to not disturb others’ experiences.

By no means am I an expert, but here are some of the hiking guidelines that resonate for me: - Stay on trail. This is my number one pet peeve when out in the backcountry – watching someone skip a turn on a switchback riles me up in a way that’s probably unhealthy. We all know how fragile our mountain environment can

be, and it’s so important to help preserve that by staying on designated trails. Plus, why cheat yourself of completing the full hike by cutting corners?

- Leave no trace. It’s a no brainer that we shouldn’t leave trash in the backcountry. Jordan and I challenge ourselves to make it seem like we were never there: clean up all crumbs at our lunch spot, resist taking neat-looking rocks or pieces of antler, walk through mud and puddles rather than disturbing delicate fauna on the edge of the trail.

Yield to uphill hikers. I have heard from friends who live in other mountainous areas around the country that this “rule” can change based on where you’re hiking. Generally, though, it is polite to step off trail (look for a rock so as to not disturb the flowers!) for those who are on their way up. Of course, we all have moments when we appreciate a breather and wave those downhill hikers on, but I know I appreciate not having to stop in the middle of a set of stairs (because who knows if I’d ever start again!).

Lots of us love to explore and enjoy our Rocky Mountain backyard. It’s going to be a beautiful summer – I keep telling myself that all this snow and moisture now will equate to an amazing wildflower season! I’ll see you out on the trails.

Estes Outreach works in partnership with area businesses, nonprofits, and individuals to provide educational and recreational opportunities for the Estes community.

This fall, the Outreach program will offer a computer programming course.

Estes Outreach has contracted Ryan Nevius, a local web developer, inventor, and founder of digital agency Syntarsus to teach Basic Computer Programming in the fall of 2016. The eleven-week class is open to middle school students through adults and covers the fundamentals of coding and introduces HTML and CSS languages.

The course is offered in response to student and community training needs and requests. Twenty middle school tech club students are currently working on coding in order to build websites.

Home-school students and their families' most frequent requests are IT

courses. The programming classes are offered also in response to the 2015 Avalanche Consulting Group’s report recommendation for Estes Valley’s economic development.

The report rates education and training sets as a top priority, specifically calling on the town to “create entrepreneurship education and internship programs thru our schools and other institutions”. This course provides area students exposure to the technology field and offers adults basic IT training.

Five scholarships of one hundred dollars each are offered to area families who might not otherwise be able to afford the course. While the class is open to the general public, scholarships are restricted to middle and high school children in the Estes Valley. The scholarship reduces the cost from $165 to $65. Walt Borneman To Sign New Book At Macdonald Book Shop

Estes Park resident Walter R. Borneman will sign copies of his latest book, MacArthur at War: World War II in the Pacific, at Macdonald Book Shop on Friday, May 27, from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

MacArthur at War chronicles the rise of General Douglas MacArthur from his devastating defeats in the Philippines following Pearl Harbor to his presiding

over the Japanese surrender onboard the battleship Missouri four years later.

MacArthur remains one of the most controversial military leaders of the twentieth century. “There was never any middle ground with MacArthur,” Borneman writes. People either exalted him as a selfless hero or despised him as an egotistical glory monger.

MacArthur at War follows Borneman’s 2012 national bestseller, The Admirals, which was the story of the only four men in American history to achieve the fivestar rank of fleet admiral.

MacArthur also rose to fivestar rank as a general of the army.

Always reluctant to leave Estes Park—particularly in the summer—Walt’s travels promoting the book will nonetheless take him to the Union Club in New York City, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Reading Festival in Hyde Park, and the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia.

The Colorado Creative Industries has chosen the following eight districts for second step in state certification, the 2016 panel review visit: Breckenridge, Carbondale, Downtown Fort Collins, Crested Butte, Aurora (East End), Golden Triangle (Denver), Mancos, Steamboat Springs. Of these eight districts, three or four will go on to be certified, according to CCI's Susan Fries.

The Estes Arts District was not chosen.

Understanding the reasons behind this determination is important and pertinent to the Estes Arts District's future.

In 2011, the Colorado legislature passed and Governor Hickenlooper signed into law HB11-1031 encouraging the formation of Creative Districts in communities, neighborhoods or contiguous geographic areas. At that time, the Boettcher Foundation funded the program which originally selected districts as candidates. Candidates were mentored and given funds ($10K to start) for a two year period (Aurora ultimately qualified for $39K), at the end of which candidates applied for certification.

In 2014, the Estes Arts District (then called the Creative Arts District) applied but was not accepted as a candidate. CCI enumerated the District's strengths (community buy-in, good concentration of creative businesses, good number of events, etc.) and recommended ways to improve (develop strategic plan, add way-finding, create website, develop funding plan because of the limited sustainability with volunteer staff, counter the "touristy vibe," etc.). The Estes Arts District sought community input, formed a task force, a steering committee, and then a board. Directors diligently followed those recommendations under the tenet/promise that as long as the District was developing, CCI would work with it.

In late March 2016, Colorado Creative Industries published new application guidelines that were significantly different from those in years past. The two-year candidacy program--during which districts develop--was no longer offered. Simply, districts would be certified or not. The Boettcher Foundation no longer funded the certification program; its support had shifted to CCI's Space to Create, an initiative for affordable housing for artists (rotates to nine regions). The traditional candidacy grant money was not available, and the amount offered was now, according to CCI, "negotiable". Still, within the month allotted, the Estes Arts District completed a rich application that proved its tremendous growth through networking, facilitating, tool creation, and plans for the future.

During a recent phone interview, Fries stated that a critical issue for 2016 certification was a district's economic sustainability and length of time a district had been operating (following its strategic plan, marketing, developing way-finding, etc.). A number of questions had to do with district money: how was a district was funded; the sources of funding; if it had paid staff; the health of its budget, etc.).

Of the eight districts chosen to go to the next round, FIVE had been in the CCI

candidacy program. For two years, these five districts had been mentored, supplied with grant money, and financially backed by their communities. These five are Aurora Cultural Arts District, Carbondale Historic Creative District, Crested Butte Creative District, Downtown Fort Collins Creative District, Mancos Creative District.

And what primarily distinguishes this list? Economic sustainability. Crested Butte has a line item that funds its district. Fort Collins and Carbondale have tax funding in the works. Breckenridge just spent 25 million on its district in an initiative that was supposed to take ten years but was accelerated. Two years in they are halfway finished. Aurora Cultural District relies on membership and income from a building it owns. Other selected districts have funding as well.

The Estes Arts District has many partners and strong supporters in the Valley. It has received donations, applied for local grants, and participated in fundraisers like Winterfest and the Duck Race. The Board will begin its membership drive soon. That said, the District is not financially supported by the community, taxes, or other consistent revenues. Financial sustainability and affording paid staff matter to CCI. And again, CCI looks for the length of time a district has been working through our strategic plan, marketing, way-finding, etc.

At the time of the application, the District had much in place--an impressive website, social media activity, a newsletter, a comprehensive calendar open to all cultural, creative arts organizations and businesses.

It hosts monthly events which bring creative people together, a summer series in Performance Park, partner programs, and more. In the works were signature events ("required" by CCI), marketing plans that included products, and hope for paid staff.

The District had come a long way.

As all CO districts grow, each becoming increasingly sophisticated, however, money will continue to matter. Fries indicated that once funding is stabilized, budgets will become critical to qualifying. The larger an arts district's budget, the more sustainable the district is perceived to be.

And CCI's primary qualifying criteria is sustainability.

Fortunately, certification is not necessary for the Estes Arts District to continue to grow and carry out its mission "to cultivate excitement, promote interaction, and create memorable experiences for the betterment of the Estes community." Fine Arts Guild Of The Rockiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Free Performance Park Summer Series Begins This Saturday, May 21st!

The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies kicks off the Performance Park Summer Series at 7 p.m. on May 21st Blue Grama, a hot bluegrass band out of Fort Collins.

Taking their name from the long-lived, warm season, native Colorado grass, Blue Grama blends the sound of the Appalachian hills with the high plains of the Rockies. The band has developed innovative music and unique arrangements that break new ground while incorporating elements of traditional folk music.

Performance Park, a gorgeous outdoor venue, located at 423 W. Elkhorn, in Downtown Estes Park uses massive rock wall as backdrop to send music into the audience. Bring a chair, a blanket, a basket, then sit back and enjoy. Admission is free. Donations to Estes Park High School Scholarships are gratefully accepted. Learn How To Use The Nonprofit Self Study Tool How do you know if your nonprofit is on track? Do you need help preparing for your annual retreat? Would you like to develop objectives for the next one to three years? A self study may be just the thing your organization needs. A self study is a tool used by organizations to ask and answer the question, “How are we doing?” Ideally, an organization conducts a self study from time to time to assess its strengths and weaknesses, and to identify specific areas where it may need to improve.

Board members and nonprofit staff are invited to join us for this very important roundtable discussion on Wednesday, May 25 from 1-3 p.m. in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library. 30th Annual Fishing Derby Saturday, June 4

The Estes Park Fishing Derby takes place Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m.-12 noon. The derby is sponsored by Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD) in conjunction with the Colorado Division of Wildlife to benefit EVRPD Youth Programs.

All participants must register, or sign in if pre-registered, at the Lake Estes Marina Store. Registration and sign-in begins at 6:30 a.m. on Derby Day. June 4 & 5, 2016 are free fishing days.

In the state of Colorado, no Colorado State fishing license is required on these two days.

A siren will sound at 8:00 am to start the derby. A siren will sound at 12:00 noon to end the derby.

All participants with fish to be judged must return to the Lake Estes Marina Store where final judging will take place at 12:15 p.m. All participants with any size fish should return to the Lake Estes Marina Store at the conclusion of the derby, you could be a winner!

Prizes will be awarded for the “Largest Fish” in four age groups: 9 & under, 10-15, 16-59, 60 & over male and female in each group. Prizes are donated by local merchants.

Incubator Planners Meet With Over 90 Estes Park Community Members The Estes Park Economic Development Corporation (Estes Park EDC) in conjunction with consultant ATP Management conducted a series of 13 public and small group meetings between May 3 and 5 to obtain input and feedback about planning for an Estes Park business incubator. Meetings were held at the Town of Estes Park Board Room, Via Bicycle Café, Marys Lake Lodge and the Estes Park EDC. Project leader Kyle Cox, Managing Director of ATP Fund, a seed-stage venture capital firm based in Austin, Texas described the results of their prior outreach and research and discussed their preliminary recommendations with local entrepreneurs, business mentors and potential angel investors. Cox stressed that “we want to design an incubator program that serves the needs of both existing businesses and potential startups.”

Recommendations from their presentation include: • Continue to support and work with a newly formed Estes Park Angel Investor group; • Type: develop a virtual incubator program, not a physical space for offices; • Economic Model: the incubator should be organized as a not-for-profit entity; grants can be especially helpful in the first three years; • Operational Model: the incubator should partner aggressively with existing Colorado organizations to deliver value to Estes Park clients;

• Governance Model: the incubator director should be part of the Estes Park EDC staff and there should be separate board to govern the incubator with representation from experts outside the Estes Valley as well as key community members.

Mike Freeman, CEO of the Fort Collins-based Innosphere business incubator, is part of the project team, along with: Isaac Barchas, head of the Austin Technology Incubator (ATI); Ryan Field, research manager at ATI and lead researcher at LiveOak Venture Partners; and Jamie Rhodes, who founded the Central Texas Angel Network and the Association of Texas Angel Networks.

Special Evening Programs At RMNP This Friday And Saturday

Friday, May 20, 7 p.m. – Celebrate Endangered Species Success Stories Rocky Mountain National Park invites you to a special program at 7 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. On May 20, America will celebrate endangered species success stories, including the protection and recovery of the American bald eagle and Rocky’s own peregrine falcon. Local naturalist Jeff Maugans will show us the Endangered Species Act at work across the nation, and discuss the importance of available corridors of land for habitat and migration.

Started in 2006, by the United States Congress, Endangered Species Day is a celebration of the nation’s wildlife and wild places. The goal of Endangered Species Day is simple, to become aware of and excited about the importance of protecting our rare, threatened, and endangered animal and plant species. In Colorado, the peregrine falcon is making a remarkable recovery thanks to efforts to protect these animals and their homes. Without these efforts, we might have lost these special falcons forever.

Our commitment to protecting rare wildlife ensures that Coloradoans can enjoy living side-by-side with all plant and wildlife for generations to come.

One reason for the nation’s success in protecting wildlife is the passage, 42 years ago, of the federal Endangered Species Act. The Endangered Species Act has successfully prevented the extinction of hundreds of species, including the humpback whale, Kirtland’s warbler, and bull trout. Species such as the Florida panther, Hawaiian monk seal, and Ala-

bama red-bellied turtle, owe their continued existence to the protections of the Act. The resounding success of the Act shows that just nine animals out of the more than 1,800 species listed as endangered under the Act have been declared extinct. This is in part thanks to the everyday actions that individuals can take to help protect our nation’s wildlife, fish and plants. Join us to learn how you can help!

Millions of people viewed his photographs along with his contemporaries Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Eliot Porter, but most didn’t know his name.

The newly released book, Landscapes for the People, shares Grant’s story through his remarkable images and his patience, perseverance, dedication, and an unsurpassed love of the natural and historic places that Americans chose to preserve.

Join the authors of Landscapes for the People, Ren and Helen Davis, to learn more about the First Chief Photographer of the National Park Service. Their book was released in September 2015, to coincide with the 2016 National Park Service Centennial.

Dust Off Those Clubs And Sign Up For Rotary’s Golf Tournament Registration is now open for the Rotary Club of Estes Park Scholarship Benefit Golf Tournament, set for Saturday, June 25, 2016. The $100 fee includes green fees, cart, participation gift, drink ticket and snacks. Players with an annual seven-day membership at the Estes Park Golf Course have a reduced registration fee of $65.

In addition to playing 18 holes of golf, each golfer will vie for several prizes, including a putting contest, most accurate drive, closest to the pin and longest putt.

Separate prizes are offered for men and women in the most accurate drive and longest putt competition. For the second year, the Peoria Handicapping System will determine the winning team. This system assigns players’ handicaps based on their performance at pre-determined holes, which are not revealed to the golfers in advance. The system allows teams an equal opportunity to win.

Kenny Collins, local Bigfoot investigator and enthusiast is hosting a Bigfoot town hall meeting this Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Estes Park Museum from 6-9 p.m. At the event will be a Meet and Greet of some folks from the B.F.R.O. (Bigfoot Filed Researchers Organization) who will be sharing stories of their searches and findings as well as some recent sightings in our area and in Bailey, CO. Biggers And Street To Jury CAC’s National Treasures Art Show Entries Due May 31 The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park is proud to announce that fine art painter James Biggers and professional photographer Moses Street will act as jurors for "National Treasures," a juried art exhibition honoring the 100th anniversary of the National Park System in 2016. The show will be on exhibit from July 1-31, 2016 at the CAC fine art gallery at 423 W. Elkhorn Avenue in Estes Park.

Biggers is an Estes Park artist who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree in Oklahoma before moving to Colorado where he now resides and pursues his passion for painting. His work can be seen at www.biggersstudio.com.

Street now lives in Loveland and has been a photographer for 46 years. He currently specializes in portrait and figurative photography. His work can be seen at www.mstreet.wix.com/mstreet.

Artists are encouraged to enter via email to cacofep@gmail.com by noon on May 31. Up to five images of artwork may be considered for inclusion in the show; the show will be juried by image, not artist.

2016 Edition Of Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide Features Over 270 Varieties of Wildflowers Linda and Bernie Nagy are always on the lookout for great photo opportunities. The Nagys are retired from a direct marketing business and are now professional photographers and artists in South Park Colorado.

They’ve already published four books including two awardwinning photography coffee table books showing the beauty of South Park, a Park County History book, and the first edition of their Rocky Mountain Wildflower Guide. The Wildflower Guide also won several top awards. A second enlarged edition of the wildflower guide launched

in April and features even more flowers – a total of 270 varieties.

“We first started a wildflower guide because we felt there was a definite need for one to fit easily in a back pocket to take on hiking trips. The first publication was a huge success and sold out in two seasons.

With the new edition, we just wanted to get the

best possible book on the market with color coded pages, rounded corners, updated detailed information including new family names, and as before, high quality color photos and printing all for a reasonable price,” said Bernie Nagy who did the photography as well as the cover and page design for the second edition.

Besides book publishing, Bernie is a media correspondent, travel writer and lifelong press and nature photographer.

“It took me several years of studying wildflowers and taking many Colorado Native Plant Master Courses to finally achieve my Colorado Flora certificate in December, 2015,” said Linda Nagy. Also, since the first book was published, Bernie and I discovered and photographed so many more wonderful

wildflowers that we felt needed to be added to the next printing.

Linda Nagy, an artist and graphic designer, is a member of the Woman of Watercolor in Summit County, Colorado. She also writes articles for local newspapers, publications, and the popular Colorado Life Magazine.

Austin Park 12th Grade

Congratulations to Austin Park, the Student of the Week for May 20, 2016.

Outside of the classroom, Austin enjoys being a member of Student Council, and a member of the cross country and swimming teams.

Outside of school, Austin likes hiking, running, swimming and ATV riding.

Austin is a conference champion in the 50 free and 100 free and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s won

swimmer of the year. He has a GPA of 3.49 and has taken three AP courses, human geography, comp and calculus.

His favorite quote is, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Skyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s out, thighs outâ&#x20AC;? from his favorite brand of clothing, Chubbies.

After high school, Austin plans to go to CU Boulder to attain a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

We are pleased to announce Phase Two of the Healing Waters Aquatic Center.

Becky Sorensen is assuming the position of Executive Director and brings with her Roger Truesdale and Susan GaptorDority as Directors to the Healing Water Foundation, Inc. Board.

Becky was our original volunteer at Healing Waters before we ever had employees. She organized many of the procedures that are still in place. She comes with a passion and a love for Healing Waters and the benefits it affords everyone, those that have pain, broken limbs, stroke, Parkinsonism disease, a need to lose weight or condition themselves. It is Beckyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal to make Healing Waters a well known facility for everyone in the Estes Valley.

Roger Truesdale is a long time familiar face to Healing Waters and other athletic activities. He is completing his sixth year: three as a volunteer and three as an employee. Roger assumed the supervisor position two years ago and has been wonderful at taking care of many tasks that needed to be completed.

Susan has used Healing Waters for three years and wants to see it continue as a special place for working out, conditioning and healing. She is a retired CPA

and will help to keep us solvent.

Kathy Hale, Kaye Maranowicz, Chris Bieker, Heidi Rothberg and Paul Moore have been with Healing Waters as Directors for a number of years. They have worked hard to see Healing Waters become successful. Kathy and Kaye work at recycling ink cartridges to bring in some money to our non-profit. Chris has served as Secretary Treasurer, pool-water changer and technical advisor even through the flood.

Heidi Rothberg has served as Secretary, Chair and Vice Chair and pool-water changer. Paul has worked on promoting Healing Waters to the community in several different capacities. If you like and enjoy Healing Waters, you need to thank all of these folks for their dedication and hard work.

We look forward to exciting growth for Healing Waters. It is a unique warm-water pool where you can exercise, lose weight, relax in quiet, or run until you are exhausted without getting hurt!

Estes Park Learning Place Tutor Spotlight The Estes Park Learning Place believes education is the key to unlocking dreams. As a nonprofit 501(3)(c) organization that serves youth and adult learners in the Estes community, The Learning Place provides K-12 tutoring, GED support, SAT/ACT preparation, career development support and more.

The Learning Place staff works with individuals to create learning plans that address goals, measure progress and assess learning. Energetic, committed and highly skilled paid tutors - many possessing credentials that include advanced degrees and certifications - motivate and support each student as he/she learns at his/her own pace. While instruction occurs through hour-long one-on-one aca-

When asked why she became a tutor at the Estes Park Learning Place, Leanne responded, “I love to teach reading! After I retired from teaching, I missed being with children, so tutoring at the EPLP seemed to be a perfect fit. It’s so rewarding to see a child’s confidence grow as he/she becomes a better reader!”

Karen Grant - Karen came to Colorado via California, and has worked as a tutor at The Learning Place for almost two years. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Reading. When asked what she enjoys most about tutoring Karen stated, “I enjoy the variety of working with students at various grade levels, as well as ability levels. Join us as we kick off our 10th anniversary season on Monday, June 6 at 7 p.m. at the Park Village Playhouse.

The 10th anniversary of Our Wonderful World would not be possible without the generous contributions of Stan Havlick.

Stan has secured entertaining presenters over the years through his Colorado travel adventure connections. As a part of Our Wonderful World’s kick-off event on Monday, June 6, please join us for cupcakes and coffee to honor Stan and the beginning of the 10th season of this library signature program.

Our first program of the season will feature Gerry Roach and the Central

American Heights. There are seven countries in Central America, or Mezzo America, as aficionados like to call the land connecting North and South America. Each country has its own personality and, of course, its highest peak. Gerry will take you on a tour of the heights and sights of this special and important region. We’ll start in Panama, then travel north through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and take a peek at Belize. The show has a surprise ending!

This year’s programs will once again be held in the spacious Park Village Playhouse at the National Park Village located at 900 Moraine Avenue, next to the Other Side Restaurant. Each program begins at 7 p.m. and admission is free.

On Your Mark, Get Set, Read! Estes Valley Library’s Summer Reading Program Beginning Soon!

Readers of all ages can explore all things fitness this summer with the Estes Valley Library summer reading program, “On You Mark, Get Set, Read!”

Pick up a reading log and earn prizes for your age group at the library to record your time-spent reading. Nonreaders can earn prizes by being read to or by listening to stories. Any book, comic book or magazine will do. Summer is the time to read for fun!

Reading during the summer not only is fun, it also prevents summer setback.

Education researchers found that students who do not read during the summer loose some of their reading skills they gained during the school year. It doesn’t take much to keep up those skills and your library is here with many

books to check out and incentive prizes to help motivate readers. So work out that brain, keep up your reading skills and join the Summer Reading Program.

Reading logs are available the last day of school on Thursday, May 26. Four different logs are available for four age groups: babies and toddlers 0-3 year olds, 4-11 year olds, teens, and even adults too! Parents are encouraged to participate along with their kids.

Look To Your Library: Resources For Local Businesses And The Opportunity To Develop Them Building successful enterprises in an ambition for the Estes Valley Library.

What exactly does that mean? It means that your public library is positioned to assist local businesses to connect to the resources that you need to be resilient and successful in the Estes Valley.

Micro- and small businesses are in a significantly different position from major corporations and larger businesses when it comes to ready access to information or online resources. Many small business operators may start off at a disadvantage from day one with regards to connecting to the information that they need to be viable. This is where the public library can play a critical role and help to position small business owners with information that they need.

The Estes Valley Library currently provides free access for library patrons to A to Z Databases. A to Z describes themselves as the “ultimate search tool” for finding business information, finding jobs, finding a person, or doing a background search. Through the search tools available on A to Z, you can also check for market information, demographics, and even search out specific information such as new homeowners in the community or health care professionals by specialty.

The library also partners with local business organizations to provide small business owners with classes, workshops, and connections to one-on-one learning opportunities. The library has been partnering with the Estes Park Economic Development Corporation since it’s inception in 2014. The EDC offers regular resource classes and one-on-one consulting.

The library also partners regularly with the Larimer Small Business Develop-

ment Center, which is associated with the Colorado Small Business Development Center. The team at the LSBDC offers satellite workshops at the library every spring and fall through a series of monthly classes.

In addition, we also partner with Larimer County Workforce Center who provides job seeker training classes at the library. They work towards connecting local job seekers with employers in the community.

These beneficial resources are all available to you, the local entrepreneurs and small business owners in the community.

As the library strives to connect you to these resources we also understand that your needs are dynamic and fluid based on a fluctuating economy in and the dynamic stages of development of your local business. We understand that some of our resources and classes will sunset and that we will need to make way for new ways to help you to find the information that you need.

We would welcome the opportunity to develop and expand our resources and adapt our services to meet your growing and changing needs. We would value your feedback to help us to determine where we can make improvements in the coming years.

Great Blue To Perform Folk Favorites At The Old Gallery Potluck If you love folk music, you’ll want to head to The Old Gallery in Allenspark this Saturday night. “We’re honored that Great Blue will be performing at our monthly potluck this Saturday,” said The Old Gallery Board Member Margie Patterson.

“They’ve been performing in the Hudson River Valley with famed groups like the Hudson River Sloop Singers and Walkabout Chorus for more than 30 years.”

Great Blue is comprised of Shirl Lawrence and Steve Kaplan, who have recently relocated to Estes Park. They perform folk favorites by Kate Wolf, Utah Phillips, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, as well as compelling and original home-spun tunes. They’ve performed with renowned folk artists like Kim and Reggie Harris, Joe Crookston, David Amram, Pete Seeger, Sy Kahn, Odetta and Guy Davis.

“Everyone is welcome to attend our potlucks and concerts,” said Patterson.

“We have folks from Estes Park, Ward,

Nederland, Boulder and even those just visiting the area while on vacation. It’s a wonderful, relaxed and welcoming environment.”

The show and potluck is from 6-9 p.m. this Saturday. Admission is $10, as well as a covered dish to share.

The Old Gallery is located at 14863 Colorado Highway 7, next to the Allenspark Fire Station. Parking is available on Highway 7 or in the parking lot next to the Allenspark Transfer Station.

Recycling Committee Wants To Hear Your Thoughts By: Judi Smith I am no longer Chair of the League Women Voters & Community Recycling Committee. However, I will continue to write these weekly news articles. To this end, I need your help. The hardest part of writing a weekly article is construing fresh new subject matter, i.e. determining what the readers would like to know.

In order to do a proficient job of deciphering the intricacies concerning disposal, I need to know your thoughts.

It is easy to say, “Reduce first, then reuse, next recycle and use the landfill only as a last resort.” But applying these guidelines is a bit more difficult. In real life, unexpected questions arise. “Which of these choices is more Earth friendly?”

“Is it better to drive to Boulder with my broken laundry baskets or throw them into the landfill?” “Is there any way to reuse styrofoam egg cartons?” or, put more simply, “How am I supposed to get

rid of that?”

“Zero waste” may be a laudable pursuit, but very few households are prepared to attain this. At the same time, we can all improve on our day to day activity in that direction, often without a great deal of effort, but using a bit of forethought, and by building on what others have already discovered. Simple examples include keeping your reusable shopping bag in your vehicle and taking your personal take-home box with you to the restaurant.

By working together, we can reduce our investment in packaging and other contraband materials clogging our landfills.

First graders at the Estes Park Elementary School have now completed decoration of their cloth bags. This project is sponsored by the Estes Park League of Women Voters, and funds to purchase the bags were obtained through a grant to the League from the Community Thrift Shop. This project has been going on for several years.

These cloth bags can be brought to stores where they are a reusable alternative to the (usually) single-use plastic bags available at so many commercial establishments (e.g., Safeway). The Elementary School art teacher, Ms. Ilah Reynar, supervises four classes of first grade students. This year students are

studying oceans in their science classes and, of course, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is a topic that is discussed because of its immediate implications for sea life, both in and above the water -- and perhaps eventually for humanity. Thus, this project is a slight extension of their science class.

Shiva

Residents of Pinewood Springs, Colorado for over 30 years, Dennis and Anita Lunt are now documenting some colorful history, myths, and legends of China.

They have studied Chinese kung fu martial arts for 26 years and have made numerous expeditions to remote Buddhist and Taoist monasteries where kung fu originated. Their passion to preserve remnants of kung fu history began in the year 2000, with the evolution of digital photography and videography.

For centuries kung fu was veiled in secrecy by devout monks at remote mountain temples, hidden from common people. Through the course of history, national political changes determined whether practitioners of kung fu were favored by an emperor, or not. The Cultural Revolution under Mao Zedong, brought another tragic cycle of disfavor by the Chinese government. Many martial arts masters fled China, in fear for their lives, eventually introducing kung fu to America.

Such cyclical purges have damaged martial arts lineage and history in China. In an effort to preserve some remaining pieces of Chinese history, Dennis and Anita have enhanced their kung fu practice through multiple photographic expeditions to China's sacred mountains. This 20-year quest has allowed them to interview dignitaries, like the head abbot of the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province. They have collected over 20,000 digital photographs and 100 hours of digital video while exploring

them with their research project. The book serves as an precursor to photo-essay books about specific mountain retreats, and a making-of description for their video documentaries.

CARA Track CARA Track is Colorado's Premier Recreational Track Program. The EVRPD is one of many recreation agencies from all around the state that are a part of this program. It is for all boys and girls, ages 5-16, to participate in a healthy summer activity. Practices are held twice a week locally, Tuesday and

Thursday, 8-9 a.m., at Bobcat Stadium.

There are five meets in various Front Range locations and ALL meets are *optional. Practices start June 7 and the last meet is July 23, which is the State Meet.

Rockies Skill Challenge The Rockies Skill Challenge is a FREE, state-wide event, for youth to participate against their peers in throwing, base running, and batting. The Rockies Skill Challenge is Saturday, June 18, 10 a.m., at Stanley Park. There are separate boys and girls divisions for ages 6-13 years old (age as of 12/31/16). The first place winners in each age group and division advance to the Sectional Competition.

The winners of the Sectional Competition advances to the State Championship at the Coca-Cola All-Star Park in Lakewood and receives tickets to the Rockies game. Volunteers are needed to run this event.

Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp This summer, the EVRPD will be bringing in your favorite soccer camp with the coaches from British Soccer Camp! Camp will be from August 8-12, just in time to get ready for the fall league! Camp offerings will be: First Kicks (3 years old), 11 a.m.-12 p.m., $95; Mini Soccer (4 & 5 years old), 9 a.m.10:30 a.m., $105; Half Day (6-14 years old), 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $145; and Golden Goal (6-14 years old), 1-3 p.m., $50. Coaches will work in small groups to provide your child with more attention and they'll receive individual evaluations. Colorado State Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center For Protected Area Management To Provide Training Opportunity For International Park Rangers In partnership with the International Ranger Federationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 8th World Ranger Congress, Colorado State Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center for Protected Area Management (CSU â&#x20AC;&#x201C; CPAM) is providing two unique training courses geared towards park rangers from outside the United States.

A pre- Congress course will be held in English May 12-21 and a post-Congress training held in Spanish May 27-June 5.

Sixty-two rangers from 26 different countries will gain hands-on knowledge and skills in resource management, law enforcement, search and rescue, tourism, and interpretation. Twenty nine participants will be in the English course and 33 in the Spanish. While CPAM does not directly provide scholarships for these participants, many different organizations have partnered with CSU to make these programs possible. All 62 participants received full scholarships funded by USAID, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Education for Nature Program, US Department of the Interior, US National Park Service, and the Thin Green Line Foundation.

Regarding Special Use Review For The Old Gallery To the Editor: I am writing this letter to support the Special Use Review for The Old Gallery/Docket number SU-16-001. I hope others will do the same.

When my husband and I bought a cabin in Allenspark eight years ago, we hoped to be able to meet neighbors and connect. Because of a random stop at The Old Gallery, we have been able to do that and more.

Since its inception, The Old Gallery has been built on what the community wants it to be. If you have an idea for an event, service or activity, you are welcome to bring it to life. My husband and I created a Chautauqua for two years, bringing up actor/historians for a performance. We had the idea for a free educational series, which is now known as Rocky Mountain 101. We invite experts about topics relevant to Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding areas, regarding flora, fauna, water, ice melt, wildlife, history and more. There are five of these scheduled for this year, all free to the public.

Other have been inspired to start a food bank, community closet, discussion and book groups, wellness classes, concerts and cultural activities, potlucks, Open Mic Nights, Soup night, and so much more.

It is the only place on our Hwy 7 corridor to offer Verizon phone service. All are welcome to use free Wi-Fi. Both are beneficial to visitors and local residents alike.

But TOG offers something even more: • When the flood hit and literally cut us off from any help, food or support from the outside world, several of us spread the word that we would gather at TOG that Friday for a potluck. More than 150 people showed up, many with spaghetti

sauce, pasta, salad, water. I personally made 157 large meatballs for the feast, because we had a freezer with an abundance of elk and buffalo meat. It was a place to get facts about our situation, and share support. In addition, when power was out and phone service gone, we could go to The Old Gallery and use the free Wi-Fi service and Verizon cell phone service, and connect with the outdoor world.

The Old Gallery is a reflection of this community. Granted, there are those in the community who “don’t like” The Old Gallery. Some of this antipathy is based on misinformation, rumors and downright lies. I personally heard from one new resident that they’d been told The Old Gallery was going to be a $1.5 million homeless shelter!

I don’t believe everyone has to like everything in a community. That’s unrealistic.

And I know some people don’t like change. Many moved here long ago because they were looking for something, and now that something doesn’t really exist any more. But to blame that reality on one building is absurd. We are currently seeing a lot of change in our mountains, as the original builders of many cabins from 1968 are dying or unable to handle mountain life physically while in their 80s and 90s. Many of their families aren’t interested in the cabin life, and are putting these cabins up for sale.

We’re seeing a new generation of families and individuals moving here. A generation that wants internet and mobile cell phone service. Who wants to enjoy culture and activities once only found in big cities. Who have ideas about what a community should offer and how it should change. And those of us who have been here, must be open to those ideas.

When the neighbors of The Old Gallery built their cabins, Highway 7 followed the route of Business 7 and was not as close to those cabins or as heavily trafficked. Nor was the transfer station fire department nearby, or the former business of Dan Crane’s located just across the street. Over time, there was a grocery store, which certainly generated traffic. As times change, traffic patterns change. In the recent traffic pattern study, the traffic around the transfer station, fire station, The Old Gallery and the turnoff to Allenspark itself, is of the level now considered as commercial or industrial and not residential. This new traffic pattern by no means is due to The Old Gallery alone, but actually is the result of years of change. The traffic that was routed through Allenspark instead of through Estes Park following the flood also contributed to the change in traffic patterns.

As a property owner, it would be disturbing to have the kinds of changes in the neighborhood as experienced by the nearby neighbors. However, this kind of growth and change happens to neighborhoods in every town and city in America. What was once an open field that spanned miles near my home in Arlington Texas (population 57,000) is now where AT&T Stadium is home to the Dallas Cowboys (population 500,000+).

All within the span of 40 short years.

My cabin is located above the pasture for the Meeker Park Lodge. The Lane Ranch is located ½ mile away, yet during the summer months, we can hear music and a loudspeaker from wedding receptions, family reunions, etc. there. We have never once complained, as we understand that it is the cost of having a business or service located in the area— which is good for the community, its economic well being and employment.

I know for certain that The Old Gallery has worked hard to minimize any noise coming from events indoors and out. I personally have stood outdoors, registering the sound levels and recording it, should any complaints from neighbors result. Since The Old Gallery was renovated and reopened, there have been no noise issues.

I understand TOG is requesting the permission for six outdoor events each year. I don’t believe this is an unreasonable request, especially given that the events usually last between 2-4 hours, for a total of roughly 18 hours of “noise inconvenience” for the neighbors. I live on a mountain with seven other cabins.

Their parties, gatherings and outdoor entertainment add up to far more than 18 hours per summer, for an outdoor event. I don’t take issue with it, because I live in a COMMUNITY, built on mutual respect, understanding and cooperation.

Granted, in the past, The Old Gallery could have been a better neighbor, especially regarding the outdoor musical that required many nights of rehearsals and performances. I would not have appreciated that kind of noise or activity night after night. The Old Gallery now stages a musical indoors. The sheer volume of attendees (900+ per season) shows that there is a demand, need and appreciation of that kind of cultural offering.

I also know that extreme efforts are being made to be nothing but good neighbors now, working within the laws and the realities of change.

Michael “Mike” Krawchuk Estes Park resident, Michael “Mike” Eliton Krawchuk, 73, died on Friday, May 6th after an extended illness. Formerly from New Jersey, Mike spent the last 27 years in Estes Park. He and his wife Winifred “Winnie,” who died in 2004, bought and operated “The Long Horn Liquor Mart” for a number of years before retiring.

Mike was born on July 20, 1942 in Newark, NJ and graduated from Neptune High School. After serving in the Naval Reserve, he entered the U.S. Navy on active duty in February 1962.

Mike was very proud of his time in the service aboard the USS Duxbury Bay (AVP38) and his part in its relief effort during the Bay of Pigs evacuation.

Mike was a certified plumber having apprenticed for five years with the Plumbers & Pipefitters Union in New York City. After his apprenticeship, he worked as a foreman in New Jersey, until he retired and moved to Colorado. Mike always loved the outdoors and Estes Park, saying it was “God’s country.” He was an active member of American Legion Post 119 and the

Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 2617.

Mike is survived by his son, Michael, daughter-inlaw Lisa, and grandchildren, Michael and Hunter, in NJ; his daughter, Patricia Krawchuk in NJ; his grandson Frankie Remington; and his sister, Susan Morris and brother-in-law, Vondell Carter, in Virginia. He is predeceased by his wife, Winnie; his youngest daughter Sharon Remington; his younger sister, Nancy Borre; and, his parents, Michael and Helen Krawchuk.

Among his closest family members is his cousin William “Billie” Sostak and wife Alice.

Remembering Michael would be incomplete without giving special thanks and recognition to his friends and caregivers in the Estes Park area, who cared for him before he left this life. Arrangements have been made with Allnutt Funeral Services and The American Legion Post 119 will have a ceremony honoring Mike on Sunday May 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.

Robert Vernon Thompson Robert Vernon Thompson passed away at his home near Allenspark, Colorado early in the morning on May 17, 2016 losing a nine month battle with leukemia. He was surrounded by his family near the time of his passing. Robert was born on May 15, 1924 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Alfred Vernon Thompson and Grace Loveda Lang. He grew up in the Great Depression and learned very young the value of a dollar. As a young man, he attended Nebraska Wesleyan University working toward a degree in Music. In 1943, his studies were interrupted by an enlistment in the Army in World War II. He resumed his education after being discharged earning his Bachelor of Arts in Music. He starred in many musical productions as a student at Wesleyan including Blithe Spirit, The Firefly, Countess Maritza, Sweethearts, and The Red Mill. After graduating, he became the Director of Music at McCook College in Nebraska.

In 1950, he continued his education at Indiana University earning his masters degree in Music as well as his doctorate in Educational Psychology finishing with honors. In 1954, Robert took a teaching position at Indiana University and married Naiad Ada Mason. They were married on Christmas Day by Naiad’s father, Thomas Mason.

From 1955 to 1964, he was the Dean of

Students at Evansville College in Evansville, Indiana.

During this time, his three children were born. His love of music followed him as he directed the music for The Old North Methodist Church choir as well as for a choir at a Presbyterian church. He taught at Colorado Women’s College for three years and in 1967 became Dean of Students at what is now Metropolitan State University in Denver. He later became Vice President of Student Affairs at MSU and retired in 1987. He spent his retirement years in Allenspark, Colorado where he enjoyed directing the Allenspark Community Church choir for several years. He spent his winters at his home in Mesa, Arizona.

He enjoyed many memberships in various groups including Blue Key, Theta Chi Fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa, Masonic Lodge, the Allenspark Community Church, and the Allenspark Senior Advisory Council. Robert is survived by his wife, Naiad Thompson, by his sister Marilyn Henry, by his children John Thompson, Susan Shelley, and Sherri Norland, and by his eight grandchildren. His memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on June 11, 2016 at the Allenspark Community Church in Allenspark, Colorado.
