Save The Date: August 27, 2017 Estes Park Museum Fundraiser Celebrating 100 Years Of The Baldpate Inn The Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc. are hosting a familyfriendly fundraiser from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 27 at the Baldpate Inn. While the Baldpate Inn celebrates its 100-year anniversary, owner Lois Smith has graciously offered to donate 50% of the proceeds of meals during this time towards the building fund for the Collections and Research Facility for the Estes Park Museum which will ensure the preservation of over 30,000 local artifacts.

Events for the afternoon will include popular music from 100 years ago performed by the Mountain Music Makers from 3-4, tours of the Baldpate Inn property by Baldpate staff, and a lecture

by Estes Park Museum Director Derek Fortini about photograph Charles Mace, co-builder of the Baldpate Inn and whose photographs decorate the walls of the main lodge.

Estes Park Police Department Recognized For Continued Excellence The Estes Park Police Department has once again been recognized for excellence by the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP). The department received reaccreditation for professional standards from the CACP on July 26, 2017. Of 232 law enforcement agencies in Colorado, only 55 are accredited through this rigorous process.

The Estes Park Police Department was first accredited in 2005, and was reaccreditated most recently in 2012.

The CACP process holds departments accountable to the professional standards of the committee. To receive accreditation, a department's policies must be in line with 260 standards, some are mandatory and some are optional. Al Sharon, Commander of the

Support Services Division for the Brighton Police Department, was the lead inspector for the Estes Park Police Department's re-accreditation. He was assisted by Jared Crone, Commander with the Fort Morgan Police Department and Chief Greg Tuliszewski of the Hayden Police Department. Sharon noted that the Estes Park Police Department met all of the mandatory standards as well as some optional standards. He commented, "Chief Kufeld runs an exemplary Police Department that serves their community with distinction."

Library Reminds Caution In Use Of Solar Eclipse Glasses As our area prepares for Monday’s solar eclipse, sky watchers are reminded to practice safety and caution. Amazon recently recalled some solar eclipse glasses sold through its online marketplace.

The Estes Valley Library learned this week that the recall affected about two dozen solar glasses distributed at its August 2 “Solar Eclipse Spectacular” event.

The Library immediately contacted all families who participated in the event.

Although the small batch of glasses that the library received from Amazon do carry the international safety standard number “ISO 12312-2,” that was not enough. Those glasses did not list a manufacturer's name or contact information. Without that manufacturer's name, Amazon concluded, “out of an abundance of caution,” that the glasses must be considered unsafe and discarded.

The good news: the hundreds of glasses purchased

for sharing at Monday’s Solar Eclipse Celebration at the Library, labeled “Eclipse Shades,” carry a manufacturer's name, address, phone number, and website. The manufacturer’s name is verified on the safe lists of NASA and AAS's websites.

This information may be helpful for others who purchased or acquired glasses from Amazon or other sources.

The Library has links to helpful solar eclipse watching information from NASA and the American Astronomical Association, with links to their recommended manufacturer lists, on its website at estesvalleylibrary.org.

Come Together In Honor And Respect Of One Another To The Editor: The horrific events that took place this past weekend in Charlottesville, VA, have once again ripped at the heart of our country and its people. As we continue to read about and see the blatant hate and racism on display, we are appalled. And we hope you are too. As ministers of the Gospel, and faithful followers of Christ, we are called to speak out against such actions. Let it be known that YMCA of the Rockies adamantly denounces all forms of hate and racism. It is never acceptable! And we firmly stand with and support our brothers and sisters of every color, every race, every faith tradition, every sexual orientation and identity, every disability, and every socio-economic status. And again, we hope you do too.

As our staff gathers in the coming days for a time of prayer, we will be lifting up all who have been, and continue to be, victims of racism and hate. And until such horrible actions cease to be, we will

continue to pray daily!

We will also be praying for our country, as well as those who instigate such blatant disrespect for our fellow Americans and the values for which we stand. Those who would engage in and/or support racism and hate under the banner of Christianity are terribly misguided. That is not the Christian faith we proclaim and serve. Join A Discussion On Downtown Parking Management And Paid Parking Aug. 24 Help shape Estes Park’s Downtown Parking Management Plan at on open house Aug. 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p. m. in the Town Board Room at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue. Community members will learn more about the downtown parking study, hear a summary of community input received and learn about best parking management practices used in other communities. All community residents, business owners and other stakeholders are encouraged to come and learn about the process and share ideas.

Based on community feedback received to date, the Parking Management Plan will recommend paid parking options.

Accordingly, Aug. 24 open house attendees will be invited to provide feedback during small group discussions on four topics: 1) What are the dates, times and locations where paid parking should be implemented? 2) How much should we charge and how should we spend the collected money? 3) What protections do downtown employees and residents need crafted into a new parking ordinance and policy? 4) What technology options/features are available to make this a successful program for residents and guests?

The open house is designed to be interactive and engaging. The input provided

during this event will be critical to development of the draft Downtown Parking Management Plan. Additional open houses will be held Sept. 28 and Oct. 26, with times, locations, and discussion topics to be announced.

The Town of Estes Park recently initiated an exciting community planning process to establish a long-term vision for the future of downtown parking.

When complete, the Estes Park Downtown Plan will be used to guide future downtown parking development. Increased population and increasing competition for destination visitors create a new set of challenges for downtown parking. The Downtown Parking Plan is anticipated to be completed in late 2017 and will include an implementation strategy for achieving the Plan’s vision.

Elegant Dining To Benefit Estes Valley Meals On Wheels August 25 “Fine Dining with a Purpose” – August 25, 2017 A fundraising banquet set for Friday, August 25, will help Estes Valley Meals on Wheels acquire equipment for safe food preparation and storage. An elegant five-course meal for up to 80 persons will be prepared and served by Chef Max Humbrecht of Morrison Community Living, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Good Samaritan – Estes Park Village.

The banquet will be preceded by a cheese and wine reception at 5 p.m.

Cost is $200 per person, with reservations required by Monday, August 14.

I love hearing from my readers and this email made my day. I am so glad that she had the gumption to go for the “pizza” or is it the “gold?” I knew a bigger dish would help spread out the dough and filling.

Meanwhile I have been busy just “cooking away.” My grandson, Gregory, left for law school in Washington, D.C. Before his departure, I wanted to have our family all together for a fare well dinner; I teased him and said it was his “Last Supper.” I tell you it was delicious but so much work I guess it was his last supper or meal like that.

We had Veal Francesca, spinach salad, fresh green beans with brown butter and almonds and cheese cake with charred rhubarb compote topping. The kids keep saying compost but soon learned the correct word as they loved it. Maybe next time I will give you the Veal recipe but I wanted to share with you, I think one of the best cheesecakes I have ever had. Next Tuesday I’m going to be lurking about when the sky turns dark and the moon appears, but I won’t be growing fangs, fur or claws. I’m going to turn into a one-day-only umbraphile. Beware: I may howl. But only for a minute and 44 seconds while the moon blocks out the sun during the Great American Eclipse.

I didn’t know until about a week ago that an eclipse chaser is officially called an umbraphile so I didn’t know until about a week ago that I will be one next Tuesday, when the total solar eclipse can be seen from the Pacific northwest, diagonally across the United States to Charleston, South Carolina. I’m going on a road trip to witness this much-hyped event, not to a vacation spot where I can play tourist, but to Pickrell, Nebraska, population 201, near Possum Creek just south of Lincoln, and smack dab in the middle of the “path of totality. �

As this rare celestial event draws near, we are learning more about eclipses in general and this total solar eclipse in particular. We know that there are an average of two or three eclipses every year so they are not that rare, but this one is the first to cross the entire U. S. continent since 1918 and the first with a totality exclusive to the United States since 1776. And here’s the kicker: any single point on earth experiences a total solar eclipse just once every 400 years, which is why there is so much ballyhoo in our fair country about this one. What this means is that the last time I could have watched a total eclipse of the sun from Pickrell, Nebraska was in 1617.

I doubt they had ISO number 12312-2 glasses back in the 17th century. The only way I could have viewed an eclipse back then would have been through a homemade pinhole projector, with my back to the sun, just like we viewed one in grade school. Oh, how anticlimactic that event was when we finally got to see a mere shadow of the eclipse projected onto a piece of white paper after assembling these

flimsy cardboard pinhole boxes.

With the coming of this eclipse, we have been reminded numerous times that we should not look directly at the sun—ever—or we’ll go blind. (Apparently during the one minute and however-many-seconds there is totality, we can look at the sun, but I’m not going to risk it. I’m going to wear my super dooper American Astronomical Societyapproved, ISO number 12312-2 glasses, purchased at the Pioneers Park Nature Center in Lincoln, after we learned the ones we bought on Amazon may not be certifiably safe. The nature center was down to its last 100 pair—the last available anywhere in town—when my family members rushed to buy ours.)

My uncle, a former NASA employee, is coming in from North Carolina because he wants to have the longest lasting, most “cosmically blissful� experience (in other words, cloud-free), which is predicted to take place in the heartland—where the skies are not cloudy all day. Uncle Bill has always been fascinated with celestial bodies and will be the perfect companion with whom to witness this unique phenomenon. He will explain in detail what is occurring, using a vocabulary that will be as foreign to me as the mid-day night sky. I’ll likely be as baffled by his narration on Tuesday as I was when he used to point to the different zodiac figures in the heavens and all I could see was a bunch of twinkling stars.

We know to expect a multitude of otherworldly sensations as the sun is completely blocked out by the moon but I wonder, what will the animals think? Will their behavior change when the stars come out mid-day? And what about the elusive vampires, werewolves and zombies?

I will be eyeing my fellow eclipse-observers carefully and listening for distant howling. I’ll report back next week.

Each Friday in July and August, the Historic Park Theatre has been featuring one giant of the silent film era. Because of his enormous popularity, Charlie Chaplin returns for a second time to the 2017 silent film festival. Chaplin has been a favorite of the Estes Park Film fest the past 5 years. His popularity began shortly after the turn of the century.

By 1918, he was one of the best known figures in the world. He wrote, directed, produced, edited and starred in most of his films. He was a perfectionist whose films usually combined slapstick with pathos.

The Chaplin films to be shown Friday, August 18 at 5 p.m. are “The Immigrant,” “The Vagabond” and “The Rink.”

In “The Immigrant” he portrays a newcomer to the United States smitten by a lady. He experiences hard times associated with one who enters the country with virtually nothing but manages to deal with several obstacles. In “The Vagabond” he plays an itinerant musician who, once again, is smitten by a lady and faces numerous struggles, both romantic and economic. “The Rink” gives him a chance to show off his roller skating skills. He begins the film as a waiter and winds up at a party attended by society members. The skating scenes, which Chaplin performed himself, are quite involved, very athletic and extremely humorous.

Friday, August 18 at 5 p.m. the Historic Park Theatre provides a chance to go back in time. The movie theatre is the

oldest west of the Mississippi; the piano is over 100 years old. It will be played by Scott “Flying Fingers” Wilseck both before and during the films. Attendees will be entertained in a manner similar to that of their grandparents and great grandparents. It is outstanding family entertainment.

Estes Park Equestrian Club Sponsors 2017 Annual Gymkhana The EPEC will be sponsoring its annual Gymkhana at the Fairgrounds on August 26th. The event features horsemanship classes as well as timed events such as Pole Bending, Flag Racing, and a Key Hole Race. There will be an ongoing trail course for riders and horses to test their skills going over, through and around various obstacles that one might encounter on any trail outing.

Protecting Your Vision During The Upcoming Solar Eclipse As America gears up for the upcoming solar eclipse, there are a few vital points to remember when it comes to protecting your eyes and those of your loved ones.

The two most important things to keep in mind are that it is ONLY safe to view the sun without eye protection for people in the total eclipse zone during a total eclipse (see below) and that sunglasses (Rx or not) are NOT safe for viewing the sun, during an eclipse or otherwise.

Please take the time to educate yourself prior to this year’s eclipse with the following recommendations from the Colorado Optometric Association.

What is a solar eclipse and how could it harm you?

Solar eclipses occur when our moon gets between the sun and our planet, obscuring the sun temporarily. A total solar eclipse only occurs when the sun is completely obstructed by the moon and is the only brief time it is safe to view the sun’s corona (atmosphere) without eye protection. On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will occur from coast-to-coast across the United States. Beginning near Lincoln Beach, Oregon and cutting diagonally across the country until ending near Charleston, South Carolina. The following list are those states along its path and thus, most directly impacted: Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Although Colorado is not included among those states to experience a total eclipse it remains vital to educate yourself, as well as your family and friends, regarding how to protect yourselves from harm while enjoying this sometimes “once-in-a-lifetime” astronomical wonder.

Tips to prevent serious eye injury before, during, and after this year’s Solar Eclipse This year’s phenomenon will last less than two hours in its entirety, with totality (only viewable in certain cities) lasting less than three minutes. The total solar eclipse will turn day to night and drop temperatures by as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is never safe to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun. Although the specific states listed above may experience a brief “totality” phase, during which the sun may be viewed safely with the naked eye, outside of this, failure to follow proper observing methods for the eclipse may result in permanent eye damage and severe vision loss.

To prevent injury, all observers are ad-

vised to wear eye protection in the form of approved eclipse glasses that meet occupational eye and face protection standards (ANSI Z81.1/ISO 12312-2). These types of “eclipse glasses” have a thin layer of chromium or aluminum deposited on the surface that protect our eye from harmful infrared and visible light rays.

Sunglasses (Rx or not; polarized or not) and smoked glass do not contain these layers and as such are NEVER safe for direct viewing of the sun.

According to Dr. Jon Pederson, president of Colorado Optometric Association, “The main eye health concern regarding direct sun exposure is “eclipse blindness” or retinal burns caused by high-intensity visible light. This exposure causes damage to the light-sensitive rods and cones of our retina, known as solar retinopathy. This damage may result in temporary or permanent vision loss and often takes hours, not seconds, to appear or manifest.”

These plans may include drafting a will, living trust, health care directive, power of attorney and other documents. Ideally, you want these plans to do more than just convey where you want your money to go – you want to impart, to the next generation, a sense of the effort that went into building the wealth they receive. Without such an appreciation, your heirs may be less than rigorous in retaining the tangible legacies you’ve left them.

• Communicate your wishes. It’s important to communicate your legacy-related wishes to your family members as early as possible. By doing so, you can hopefully avoid unpleasant surprises and hurt feelings when it’s time for your estate to be settled – and you’ll also let people know what tasks, if any, they need to perform. For example, if you’re choosing a family member to be the executor of your estate, or if you’re giving someone

power of attorney over your financial or health-related matters, they should be prepared.

• Update your documents. During your life, you may well experience any number of changes – new marriage, new children, opening a family business, and so on.

You need to make sure your legal documents and financial accounts reflect these changes. For example, if you’ve remarried, you may want to change the beneficiary designations on your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts – if left untouched, these designations may even supersede the instructions left in your will. And the directions in life chosen by your grown children may also dictate changes in your will or living trust.

In any case, it’s a good idea to review all your legacy-related documents periodically, and update them as needed.

In addition to taking the above steps, you also need to protect the financial resources that go into your legacy. So, when you retire and begin taking funds from your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts, make sure your withdrawal rate is sufficient for your living expenses, but not so high that it eventually jeopardizes the amounts you planned to leave to your family or to your preferred charities. A financial professional can help you determine the withdrawal rate appropriate for your situation.

With careful planning, and by making the right moves, you can create the type of legacy you desire – one that can benefit your loved ones far into the future.

Frank Lee Ruggles served four years as a U.S. Army Paratrooper, was a First Sergeant in the Virginia State Guard as a Military Police Officer, and parachuted with the 82nd Airborne division into Panama.

He then was inspired to go in a completely different direction by following in the footsteps of his photographic hero Ansel Adams. This former militaryman-turned-critically-acclaimed photographer held the esteemed position as an Official Photographer for the United States National Park Service from 2007

through 2011, a position only held by a handful of people in the 100 year history of the NPS. In combining two such different lives, Ruggles has found himself in the role of Warrior-Artist, and he is using his unique skills to advocate for the conservation and preservation of our national parks and other natural places.

"Chasing Light reveals parts of our country that no one ever gets to see, like the view atop of George Washington's head on Mt. Rushmore or photos from deep inside the heart of Death Valley that I took during a 79-mile solo backpacking trip," said Ruggles. "I had to venture completely off grid to get these shots, sometimes disappearing into pristine wilderness for days at a time so I could capture the unseen wonder of America with nothing but 42 lbs. of camera gear on my back."

Xander is a six year old lab/shepherd mix. He is 92 pounds and very sweet. He is good with other dogs and children.

Sweet Kemah is about three years old, she is house trained, good with cats and other dogs, however she is deaf. She is very afraid of fast movements so a home without small children would be best.

Kemah runs five miles at the lake every morning and really enjoys that. She is also kennel trained and is an “easy to love� kind of girl.

Diesel is a nine month old Chihuahua/ Italian greyhound mix. He weighs about 11 lbs. He will do best in a home as an only dog or with dogs that are larger than him. He is a very smart guy!

Olivia is a two year old Himalayan mix.

She is scared of children and dogs but loves to be pet and loved on. Her mama died and she needs a new forever home.

Harleigh is a one year old loving sweet kitty. She does well with other cats and would probably adjust okay to a dog friend as well.

Last but not least, there are ten budgies (parakeets) up for adoption, in a variety of pretty colors, both males and females.

Fourteenth Annual John Denver Tribute Concert Set For Labor Day Weekend Brad Fitch and The TropiCowboy Band will present their 14th annual John Denver Tribute Concert in Estes Park on Saturday, Sept. 2 at the YMCA of the Rockies’ Ruesch Auditorium. This concert, featuring classic songs from the legendary Denver, will benefit the Estes Park Lions Club charities. Funds raised will go to organizations for the sight and hearing impaired, community social services and local scholarships.

EVRPD Announces Appointments Of Senior Advisory Committee For Senior Services At Estes Valley Community Center Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in Estes Valley, is pleased to announce the formation of the Senior Advisory Committee (SAC). The EVRPD Board of Directors has appointed the following as members: Prince Beall, JoAnn Batey, Bettie Tully, Jeff Hancock and Dorothy Corman.

The committee will be responsible for counseling and assisting the District with the planning and communication of senior services at the new Estes Valley Community Center (EVCC).

“We are excited to have a well-rounded group of active Estes Park citizens to help us with this initiative,” said Teresa Jackson. “Moving forward we are excited to transition senior services to the new community center where facilities will allow for continued and expanded activities and social opportunities.”

In August 2016, the Town of Estes Park and the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District entered an intergovernmental agreement to transfer senior services from the Town to EVRPD. Senior services will move to EVCC when it opens, which is anticipated to be February 2018. The agreement includes the establishment of a Senior Advisory Committee.

The Senior Advisory Committee exists to advise the Estes Valley Recreation and Park District in matters relating to senior adults. The group will encourage the development of services and programs,

promote the use of senior services at the Estes Valley Community Center, and help improve the common good of the community by utilizing the experiences and expertise of seniors.

The Committee’s first meeting was on Wednesday, August 2, where the group nominated and voted on committee positions. Prince Beall was nominated as president, JoAnn Batey was nominated as vice-president, and Dorothy Corman was nominated as secretary. Final approval of the roles will be determined by the EVRPD Board of Directors at their next meeting on Tuesday, August 22.

“Estes Park is a great little mountain town that will be able to provide numerous leisure activities for the townsfolks and tourists year-round and in all kinds of weather,” said Prince Beall, newly nominated President of the SAC. “The Center promises to be a wonderful facility for all ages to interact and have fun together. The Senior Advisory Committee would appreciate any positive suggestions for ‘recharging our batteries’ with others.”

“YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT!” If you’ve watched ‘cop’ shows during your life, you’re familiar with the ‘Miranda Rights’ law that requires that any person being arrested by law enforcement officers must be reminded of this ‘right’. As we all know, many people under the stress of being stopped or arrested, tend to ‘spout off’ while being arrested. This law reminds them that they ‘should remain quiet’ because, once they’ve been warned, those statements that they make may be used against them in criminal proceedings. However, when we take a good look at this ‘reminder’ we recognize that there are many times when the same words should be pondered by all of us in this day of so much ‘talk pollution’.

How many times have you wanted to do like a man someone told me about recently. He had been silent so long that relatives began to wonder if he had lost his ability to speak. As he sat in a family gathering, one very verbose person went on and on, totally boring everyone present. Suddenly, the ‘quiet man’ turned to the speaker and said, loudly, “Would you put a sock in it!” Everyone was shocked to hear him speak, but pleased that the ‘Chatty Cathy’ finally became silent.

So often these days, I suspect we all want to say to our political leaders, “Would you put a sock in it!”. With ‘tweets’ and ‘lies’ and ‘misinformation’ shared widely, we could wish the ‘silent’ gentleman was there or that those in political power…also ‘sick of it’ …would confront such behavior. Truly, as we witness today in politics, the truism applies: “When all is said and done, a whole lot more will be said than done.” Besides, God says, “When words are many, sin is not absent, one who holds his tongue is wise.”

But, these words are not limited to them. So often we are so full of what we want to say that we ‘can’t keep it in’ and the ‘multitude of words’ is uttered to the detriment of others and ourselves. The writer, James, reminds us: ‘the tongue is a little fire, a world of evil, which can set on fire so much’. In this day of ‘road rage’, ‘domestic violence’, and ‘assault and battery’, how many of these might have been avoided if participants had just ‘put a sock in it’ and showed wisdom by not speaking or speaking wisely. “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

The ‘Miranda Rights’ declaration has a second part: “Anything you say, can and will be used against you in a court of law!” Often we think that our ‘freedom of speech’ allows us to say anything we want to without repercussions. It’s a belief of many in politics and so we are bombarded by ‘untruths’, ‘half-truths’, so much that we need periodic ‘fact checks’. Despite that, they are shared widely. Again, this is not a problem only of those in politics. We need to realize how often we struggle with the same. And the ‘Miranda’ law speaks the truth. Someday we will answer for all these words in a ‘court of law’, either in this life or in judgment. Jesus warned, “Every idle word a man speaks, he shall give an account of it in the Day of Judgment.” (Matt. 12:36) A further warning was given by John: “Every liar will have his part in the lake of fire.” (Rev. 21:8) So, a couple of lessons I hope we will learn from this. One, let’s examine our words. Are they true? Are they loving? Are they necessary? Perhaps, if not, we need to ‘put a sock in it!’. And secondly, let’s be like Nathanael in the Bible, of whom Jesus said, “Behold, a man in whom there is no dishonesty!” May God help us to be like him.

Greg was raised in Estes Park where his father owned masonry and construction businesses, and his mother was an art teacher, although Greg would never take one of his mother’s art classes in school.

He discovered his enjoyment of pottery after enrolling in his first fine arts course in college, where he graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Fine Arts degree. Greg spent a lot of time in the pottery lab where he learned alongside great professors who grew his knowledge.

After college Greg tried to make a career out of his passion but said, "At that time I wasn't technical enough to know what would sell. If you just make it, it

doesn't mean people will buy it.” To help pay the bills Greg worked odd jobs, working for his father, and driving a school bus. Greg acquired a position with the National Park Service where he worked with building and road maintenance. "The reason I started working at the park was because starving as an artist got old. Plus I got married and was starting a family so I had to at least pretend like I was growing up," said Dannels.

During his 30 year career with the park service, Greg worked 4 days a week and was able to perfect his craft of pottery on his days off. Since he retired in 2013, Greg has dedicated more time to his pottery where he enters two to three shows a year and sales his pottery to galleries in Vail, Breckenridge, Georgetown, and the Trail Ridge Store. Greg tries to create functional forms of pottery that you can use and enjoy every day. He wants to keep his pottery a hobby because he says, "When you have to do it, it's different than when you choose to do it because you love it, It's that choice that I enjoy the most."

Parking Planning: Your Opportunity To Have A Voice

By Claudine Perrault, Director In this space, we frequently delve into our Library’s core values and resources: literacy and learning to name a few. But there is another topic on our minds, and probably on yours too: parking.

Parking challenges, which we know are greater during certain times of year, and certain times of day, likely impact your use of the Library and access to its wonderful resources. It’s a challenge that remains on our community’s horizon.

One of the most frequent issues noted in our patron feedback forms is parking, a concern that was again notable in our recent Library Patron Satisfaction Survey.

It is a topic on our minds—one that we care about, one for which we strive to explore remedies.

And that’s why we’re encouraging the public to attend the community forum being convened by the Town of Estes Park.

Estes Park’s Downtown Parking Management Plan will be the focus of an open house this Thursday, August 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the Town Board Room at Town Hall. Participants will learn more about the downtown parking study, hear community input received, and learn about best parking management practices used in other communities. Residents, business owners, and library patrons are all invited.

Certainly, every voice in this conversation is one that matters.

It is the Library’s goal to be a good downtown neighbor. Many of our neigh-

bors are small businesses, each a vital part of the economic lifeblood of our village.

Studies have shown that public libraries are an anchor, helping to bring people to a community core, and in turn providing an economic bump as library users stop for lunch, grab a coffee, or stroll through a shop as part of their journey.

The Library is also part of the civic center: attached to Town Hall and near the village green, as it were: Bond Park. These are vital community services. Getting access to the resources of the Library, Town Government, and our vibrant restaurants and retailers, is what downtown is all about. It is the heart of our village.

Long-term planning by the Library has included the exploration of services beyond our downtown facility. One big step in that direction will coincide with the just-months-away opening of the Recreation Center near the school district campus. Many will be happy to know it will include a drive-through Library bookdrop—you can return items 24 hours a day without navigating downtown traffic — as well as a self-serve kiosk that will allow you to choose the Recreation Center location to pick up materials you’ve placed on Hold.

We are fortunate to live in a wonderful valley, with the benefits and challenges that come with living in a mountain village beloved by so many. Parking challenges impact our quality of life. Together, we have the ability to move toward constructive and creative solutions.

Discarded Fishing Line, Dangerous To Wildlife, Kills Osprey In Northwest Colorado Fishing line can help you reel in the big one, but when monofilament is left carelessly along a lake or river it can be harmful to wildlife.

In early August, Colorado Parks and Wildlife received a call about a dead Osprey on the banks of Trout Creek in the Routt National Forest in northwest Colorado. The person who made the report said it looked like the bird had been shot. When CPW Wildlife Officer Andrea Sponseller investigated she found that the bird had become entangled in fishing line.

“The line was wrapped around the osprey’s feet and neck,” Sponseller said.

“Anglers should never discard fishing line, hooks or bait along a water way. All of these can be harmful to wildlife.”

Every year throughout the state CPW receives reports from people who have found birds ensnared by fishing line.

“I’ve seen quite a few birds tangled and killed by fishing line in the last few years.

Anglers should just put unneeded line in their pocket or tackle box and then throw it away properly,” Sponseller said.

Some anglers also clean their catch next to the water and then leave the guts on the bank. That can attract bears and other wildlife. Fish should be cleaned well away from a lake or river and the entrails disposed of in a dumpster or garbage can.

“If you see discarded line or other fishing gear, please pick it up. You’ll help keep fishing areas clean and remove a hazard that could kill Colorado’s wildlife,” Sponseller said.

ALICE Training Encourages Action

Ever since the Columbine High School shooting there has been a pit in my stomach. A helpless feeling. A nagging ‘what-if ’ sensation that won’t go away.

When news of Columbine first broke, I worked for Partners Mentoring Youth of Estes Park, a local non-profit that matches at-risk youth with an adult volunteer mentor. I was riding in a car with former Chief of Police, Randy Repola, who was also on the Partners Mentoring advisory board. We were on our way to tour a go-kart racing facility that would be the site of our upcoming fundraiser. Violent, ragged and uncertain details dribbled from the car’s radio as we drove down HWY 36.

“Could it happen here?” I asked him.

“Anywhere,” he answered.

Since Columbine there have been many more mass shootings: Virginia Tech, Orlando’s Pulse Night Club, Umpqua Community College, Fort Hood, Aurora, San Bernardino. Too many.

The Monday morning after Sandy Hook, I hugged my children as tight as I could before they boarded the school bus. I wanted to keep them home. Snuggle them. Cocoon them. Forever. But we have to live, and that is the struggle:

managing daily life when something horrible could happen anywhere and anytime.

Recently I attended an ALICE Training at YMCA of the Rockies. ALICE is a national program that provides civilians with active shooter response training. It offers tools and preparation to increase the odds of surviving a violent attack.

The instructors included several YMCA of the Rockies staff members, Jim Boyd, Dave Francis, Chris Daubin and Melisa LaFon who work with Officer Curt Plassmeyer of the Estes Park Police Department to offer these courses. The ALICE training encourages participants to leave behind the ‘hide under your desk’ mentality that we were all taught in elementary school. To increase the odds of survival during a violent intruder attack, we learned to follow the steps in the ALICE acronym: AAlert, L-Lockdown, I-Inform, CCounter, and E-Evacuate. Depending on the circumstances and location, some steps would be more appropriate than others. During the class, we were given

the opportunity to ask questions, discuss previous shootings and their survival rates, build barricades with office equipment, take action and make plans.

Jim Boyd, one the trainers said, “The best part of teaching these trainings is reading the evaluations afterwards.

Everyone feels more empowered than they did before the class.”

“We give people tools and options as we encourage them to be active, not passive, ” added Chris Daubin, head of security at YMCA of the Rockies.

I highly recommend attending an ALICE Training, or scheduling one for your business, organization or church.

The more people who attend this training, the better prepared this community will be should it ever happen here. To date, nearly 2,000 people in Estes Park and more than a million across the United States have attended an ALICE Training.

The most important lesson I learned in the training, is that while we can’t predict where or when an armed attack might happen, to the best of our ability, we can be prepared.

EVICS was thrilled to receive a surprise gift from the Peggy Lynch Team a few weeks ago. When long time Estes Park residents, Lauri and Bo Winslow, sold their home earlier this summer, they responded to a survey from their realtor, Peggy Lynch. One question the business asked was why the seller chose this company as their realtor? The response?

“Because she invests in community and she supports EVICS”. Due to this comment, the Peggy Lynch Team chose to share the commission received on the sale of this home with the EVICS program! Wow! In our busy lives, it’s not often that we take the time to give thoughtful feedback every opportunity we get. I know at my house, many a business survey goes straight to the recycle bin because we are just too busy to take the time, and honestly, we think it won’t make a difference anyway. But this has caused me to slow down and pay attention!

What opportunities am I missing to impact our community? What affirmations have I overlooked to share about the good work others are doing? When have I stopped and truly recognized others who “invest in community” because of a specific way they have given or a task they have done? It’s easy to focus on the stuff we’re not happy with: traffic, pot holes, unaffordable housing, too many tourists, wind, and long lines at Safeway. This story was a reminder to me, to take notice of the good in our community and speak up about it.

Had the Winslows not taken the time to share a meaningful comment about their realtor, EVICS would not have been the recipient of a gift that helps us continue to do good work in our community. Many thanks to Peggy Lynch and the many other business people whose investments are making a difference!

Internationally Known Animal Communicator To Teach In EP August 19 International author Kate Solisti and local resident Renee Hodgden are offering a unique workshop, “Talking with and Healing Your Pets” on Saturday, August 19th from 10:00-1:00 at the beautiful Dao House Retreat Center off Rt. 7. Solisti and Hodgden will be teaching Animal Communication techniques, hands-on healing, and Flower Essences for emotional support.

This will be an opportunity to deepen your communication with your animals as well as add safe, gentle techniques to use at home for their physical, emotional and mental well- being. Acting Northwest Regional Manager Dean Riggs says some in the public may consider using firearms to protect themselves in case of a dangerous wildlife encounter; however, CPW recommends bear spray as an effective alternative to a gun as the first means of defense.

"We understand people have the right to legally carry and use a firearm to defend themselves from a bear attack, but it's not as effective as people think, and if you shoot your gun in a residential area or a crowded campsite you could accidently kill someone," said Riggs. "Bear spray is actually a much more effective deterrent, proven in several field studies.

It's a good idea to have bear spray at home if you live in bear country, or bring it along if you recreate in an area with bear activity."

CPW officials say black bears in Colorado do not often attack people, but they are capable of mauling and killing humans as seen in recent incidents in Alaska, including a woman with Colorado ties killed by a black bear last month.

"A black bear's natural diet in Colorado

typically consists of acorns and berries, and they will make a meal of carrion or newborn fawns and elk calves. Generally, they don’t hunt humans but it does not mean it couldn't happen and you need to be prepared," said Riggs. "The major concern is when a person surprises a bear, or if a person makes a bear feel threatened or cornered, it will likely respond forcefully. Their strength, powerful jaws and sharp claws make them a significant threat."

Because of that threat, Riggs says when it comes to choosing between human health and safety and a dangerous wild animal, there are few options for wildlife officers.

"To protect people, wildlife officers will kill any bear showing aggression toward humans," he said. "When people feed bears, they essentially sentence them to death but it’s our officers who have to carry out the execution. It's by far the worst part of the job."

CPW says the public can safely watch bears from a distance, with binoculars, a scope or a camera with a telephoto lens.

At no time should people approach a bear to get a closer look, or offer it food to get a better picture.

Fundraising Dinner To Benefit Estes Park 13-Year Old Raises Almost $6,000 Nearly 300 people attended a Mexican dinner on August 14 at the Estes Park Marina to benefit 13 year old Estes Park student, Darrel Guadarrama Rojas. The event raised funds to help cover expenses related to his recent liver and kidney transplant. Just under $6,000 was raised through voluntary contributions.

It was a beautiful celebration of the community spirit of our special town.

Elena Martinez, along with her family and friends, organized the meal. Entertainment was provided by the band, “Area 970.” The Estes Valley Recreation and Parks Department donated the venue. El Sol Imports made a generous contribution for a prize drawing.

Although Darrel’s mother, Minerva, was unable to attend the event because she was with her son at Children’s Hospital in Denver, she wrote a beautiful thank you note that said, “I want to thank all the people who attended yesterday’s dinner in honor of my Darrel, and all the people who made it possible.

And it gives me much joy to know that there are so many people who care about Darrel and myself.”

As of this writing, just under $8,000 has been raised to help Darrel’s family cover the many out of pocket costs associated with Darrel’s transplants. A total of $30,000 is needed. Friday, September 15th, 7:00 p.m. -The Watoto Children’s Choir, a group of 18 orphans from Uganda, will begin its sixmonth U.S. tour in Estes Park, Colorado at the YMCA of the Rockies Ruesch Auditorium featuring a brand new concert, Signs & Wonders.

The concert will feature worship songs that share the stories of the children and the joy that they have because of God’s love.

The children will share stories of how their lives have been changed and how they have been called into a life of purpose to transform their communities. All performances are free and open to the public.

Since 1994, Watoto Children’s Choirs have traveled the world sharing the plight of Africa’s orphaned children. Each child in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both of their parents but they have been rescued and now live in a Watoto village. Watoto is a holistic child-care solution initiated to serve the dire needs of the people of Africa.

Abandoned at a hospital in Kampala, Esther Kahangi was rescued by Watoto as a premature baby and spent her first weeks in critical care. Now, she is a healthy, joyful 8-year-old who has toured with the choir.

“I am excited to be a part of Signs & Wonders,” said Esther. “I know that I am a wonder because I am chosen by God as His child.”

“What an extraordinary experience it is to see the Watoto Children’s Choir,” said Brian Houston, Senior Pastor of Hillsong Church. “It lights up the place to see these beautiful kids, and when you hear their stories and learn about where they have come from, you can’t help but think of all God has done.”

Larimer County Landfill Now Accepting Green Waste Residents can now divert green waste from the landfill for beneficial use Larimer County residents now have the option of keeping green waste out of the landfill. So, what is green waste? It’s clean lumber, wood pallets, tree limbs and trimmings; tree trunks less than two feet in diameter by six feet long; and yard waste. Larimer County Solid Waste begins their Residential Green Waste Program on August 21, 2017.

Green waste is collected at the Larimer County Landfill, then ground up and sent off to Biochar, a local company, to be turned into a product of the same name. Biochar is a highly absorbent charcoal used as a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Biochar has the potential to increase agricultural productivity and mitigate climate change.

Green waste will be accepted at the $6.05 per-cubic yard rate, with no surcharge. “The Larimer County Landfill began taking green waste from our commercial customers on July 5, 2017, and now we have the capacity to open that up to all our customers,” said Stephen Gillette, Director of Larimer County

Solid Waste. “We’re thrilled to extend this diversion to the community.”

All loads must be unloaded by waste type [clean lumber and pallets, green waste, logs, and yard waste]. No other trash will be accepted in a load; all mixed loads will go to the landfill. The following items will not be accepted as green waste: fiberboard, food waste, metal, painted wood, plastic, plywood, root balls, soil, trash, and treated wood.

Bags and containers cannot be dumped with green waste and should be kept for reuse.

Estes Recycles Day October 21 By: Judi Smith Where has the summer gone?! School is starting and the fall Estes Recycles Day is only nine weeks away! The event is scheduled for October 21 and will again encompass FreecycleEstes, Electronic Recycling, Shred-a-thon, (Rotary Club of Estes Park) and the Bestway Painting PaintCare Program – all in one location at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. So – check your closets, attics, basements, garage, and the exterior storage shed for those often overlooked items that are taking up your space.

Electronic Recycling does cost. Last May, the Community Recycling Committee collected over 7,000 pounds of electronics and paid for roll-off rental and transportation to Boulder as well as the fees for proper disposal. Anyone objecting to our charges is welcome to take their items to Ecocycle CHaRM. We offer the periodic local collection as a community service. We accept TVs and monitors (fee depends on size), computers CPUs, towers, laptops and peripherals such as printers.

Fees for other items depends on weight: small electronic items like cable boxes, alkaline and rechargeable batteries. No microwave ovens are accepted. See details in the news the week before Estes Recycles Day. Please check-in with your items. We work as fast as we can. If you cannot wait, please take your items with you. To encourage responsible disposal, we keep the fees as low as possible. Last April, some unacceptable items were left without permission. The CRC cannot afford to pay your fees.

The Bestway Painting PaintCare Program collected six trucks full of paint last May. If container is leaking, it must be placed in a larger, leak proof vessel.

Contact Bestway Painting with any questions, including details on what they can (and cannot) accept. Paint is a hazardous material and cannot be added to landfill trash or to single stream recycling.

The Rotary Shred-a-thon accepts paper for shredding. They do not accept paper that has already been shredded. Shredded paper cannot be placed in single stream recycling, but, providing it is white or pastel in color, it can be placed, for recycling, in the office paper bin at the EP Transfer Station. Bright colored shredded paper, including neon colors, must be placed in your landfill trash.

This is a donation based station staffed entirely by volunteers. All donations will contribute to the Scholarship Fund for our high school seniors. Look for further details in upcoming newspapers.

Our biannual FreecycleEstes is also staffed entirely by CRC volunteers.

Please look in all boxes before bringing them to the event. We do not accept trash or broken items, which can sometimes inadvertently get into boxes that have been on the shelf for years. Working or not, all electronics must be submitted at the Electronic Recycling Station as disposal fees can accumulate beyond our capability. All FreecycleEstes items must be clean and in working condition. We also do not accept large contributions (like sofas), because we lack the where with all to transport them, but we do have a board where you can post them – or stay to offer them yourself. (Last May’s unauthorized “contribution” of a broken recliner was quite a nuisance and ended up in the landfill at CRC expense.) We start accepting donations at 8 a.m. the day of the event – not three days prior.

However, at this free garage sale, things absorbing space for one family or business go home to someone else’s home or office. No money changes hands. Children and adults discover new toys, bicycles, clothing, small furniture, antiques, sports equipment ... you never know what will appear.

AARP Driver Safety Course Offered At The Senior Center The Estes Park Senior Center will host an AARP Driver Safety Program Course on Thursday, August 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The cost is $15 for AARP members or $20 for non-members and includes the comprehensive course workbook. Checks should be made payable to AARP on the day of the class.

Course participants may be eligible to receive a discount on their auto insurance premiums and are encouraged to consult their insurance companies for details. The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest driver safety course designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. The course is intended to help drivers live more independently as they age and remain safe on today’s roads. Since the program’s inception in 1979, more than 12 million participants have completed the course.

The course covers defensive driving techniques and the normal changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time asso-

ciated with aging. The course also provides practical techniques for adjusting to these changes to ensure the driver’s own safety and that of others on the road. There are no tests required.

There is a one-hour lunch break from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Participants are welcome to make lunch reservations at the Senior Center’s Fourth Street Café. The cost is $5 for EPSCC, Inc. members or $7 for non-members. Alternatively, participants can buy items from the snack basket at the Senior Center or bring prepackaged snacks along. Sack lunches or take-out foods are not allowed at the Senior Center.

Donald Lowe

Helen Kilcrease Lee Helen Kilcrease Lee passed away July 14 at Prospect Park Living Center. She was born January 29, 1927, in the small town of Glen, Mississippi, to Cordelia McAnally Kilcrease and Marcus Kilcrease. She was third to the youngest of eleven children. At age sixteen, she moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to live with her oldest brother, Bill, and his family.

While attending a church banquet with her family, she met the love of her life, Cecil Lee. They married January 4, 1945, and spent almost 56 years together in a wonderful and loving marriage. They welcomed two children, Cheryl Lee Badeaux and Randy Lee. She worked many years as the assistant to Baton Rouge physician Frank J. Jones. Dr. Jones used to call her the best diagnostician in Baton Rouge, as she could listen to a patient's symptoms over the telephone and diagnose most of their problems before they reached the medical offices.

The Lee Family visited Colorado, especially Estes Park, many times as the children were growing up.

After Helen and Cecil retired, they decided to make Estes Park their home and moved to the mountains in 1980. They loved Estes Park and the many friends they made over the years.

They were members of Estes Park Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship of their church family.

Helen was preceded to Heaven by Cecil, her parents, nine siblings and beloved in-laws. She is survived by daughter Cheryl Badeaux, Baton Rouge, LA, son, Randy Lee, Estes Park, CO, sister, Ollie Jones, Olive Branch, MS, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was loved by her family and will be missed very much.

No service has been planned at this time, but an announcement will be made when a memorial service has been scheduled. It is requested that memorial donations be sent to the Children's Hospital in Denver.

Church on Wednesday, Aug 23 at 11 am.

Ervain John Friehe Ervain John Friehe passed away Sunday, August 13, 2017 in Loveland, Colorado.

He was 93 years old.

Erv was born June 25, 1924 to Fred and Emma (Liebrandt) Friehe on the family farm near McCook.

Erv graduated from McCook High School in 1942.

On February 20, 1944 he married Nadine June Klein at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Missouri. They made their home in several locations while Erv was in the service. They eventually returned to McCook where the couple farmed until retirement.

Erv entered the United States Army Air Corp. on December 29, 1943 and was honorably discharged on November 25, 1945. As a farmer, Erv advanced new techniques like improved grain handling, center pivot irrigation and no till farming. In addition he was active in a variety of state and national wheat marketing organizations, traveling around the world and serving in leadership positions. In 1971, he was a founding member of the Nebraska Ethanol Board. Among other accomplishments, Erv chaired the Nebraska ASCS Committee, was inducted into the Nebraska Agriculture Hall of Fame and advised a number of Nebraska Governors and U.S. Senators. In McCook, he worked on a variety of civic projects like the McCook Junior College Boosters, the Midwest Sale Barn and Crime Stoppers. He was active in Peace Lutheran Church

as well as the activities of his five children.

Erv was preceded in death by his parents; wife Nadine; son Robert Friehe; sister, Elaine; brother Elsworth Friehe and his wife, Irma; and brotherin-law, Garnet Henton.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Friehe and Susan Christensen of Omaha and sons, Ronald Friehe and wife Doris of McCook and Thomas Friehe of Estes Park and daughter-in-law, Mary Louise Friehe of Omaha. Also in McCook, sister, Dorothy Henton and in-laws, Don Klein and wife Norma. Erv is also survived by nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to be designated at later date.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, August 16th at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, with the family greeting from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook with Pastor Kahle officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
