Police Chief Kufeld Reminds Drivers To Be Aware Of School Zones & Crosswalks Estes Park public schools are back in session this week, which means more pedestrians and cyclists along Estes Park roadways. Police Chief Wes Kufeld reminds drivers to obey speed limits and school zones and pay special attention to pedestrians at crosswalks. Chief Kufeld commented, “We all need to share the road and take responsibility for the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists in our community.�

He continued, “While our police officers are actively enforcing the reduced speed limits, we rely on drivers to be fully aware of their surroundings. Preventing a tragedy is our top priority.�

School zones are clearly marked with signs indicating speed limits. While some signs advise drivers of a reduced speed limit when children are present, other signs flash a yellow light to advise drivers of reduced speed limits. Exact times vary, but signs generally flash on school days between 7:30 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. and from 3 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Side street lights near the school flash up to 10 minutes longer. During these times, the speed limit in the school zone along Highway 7 is reduced to 25 miles per hour while side street speed limits are reduced to 20 miles per hour. Fines for speeding in a school zone are doubled.

Chief Kufeld commented, “People tend to forget about the numerous crosswalks on Highway 7.� Along Highway 7, crosswalks are positioned just south of U.S. 36 and at the intersections of First Street, Manford Avenue, Graves Avenue, Morgan Street, Lexington Lane and Pine Knoll Drive.

Kufeld continued, “Please be cautious and keep a watchful eye out for pedestrians crossing streets, at driveways and at intersections.�

Multi-Agency Rescue Of Injured Climber On The Crags On August 20, 2017, at approximately 11:55 a.m., the Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office received a 911 call regarding an injured climber at The Crags east of Fish Creek Road and South St. Vrain Avenue near Estes Park. The caller stated his friend fell, had a broken leg, and they were at the base of the Shark’s Fin feature of The Crags.

Rocky Mountain Nation Park rescuers reached the injured 49-year-old Boulder man at approximately 2:00 p.m., provided medical treatment, and recommended a hoist operation to get the climber to safety.

LCSO Emergency Services worked with the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center who dispatched a Blackhawk hoist helicopter from

Eagle, Colorado.

Larimer County Search and Rescue, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Rocky Mountain Rescue set up a guide line rope system to lower the climber as a contingency in case the hoist operation was not possible.

The climber was successfully hoisted by the helicopter at approximately 4:00 p.m. and flown to Estes Park Fairgrounds. The climber was then transported to Estes Park Medical Center via ambulance for treatment of his injuries. All rescue resources cleared the scene by approximately 8:30 p.m.

Sept. 20 Power Outage Will Affect Fox Creek Road In Glen Haven Estes Park Light and Power will remove a large, dead tree off Fox Creek Road in Glen Haven in coordination with Adam's Tree Service on Sept. 20, 2017. In order to perform this work as quickly and safely as possible, crews must drop the power line along a portion of Fox Creek Road. The outage is expected to begin at

8:30 a.m. and could last through 3 p.m.

The Studio Fine Art And Framing Recognized As “Business Bright Spot” The Estes Park in Bloom steering committee presented the “Business Bright Spot” award to The Studio Fine Art and Framing Aug. 18. The committee presented a traveling sign for the property, a window cling and a framed certificate of recognition to owner Greg Miles. The designation of a “Business Bright Spot” recognizes a business that places emphasis on beautifully maintained landscapes, floral displays and a tidy store front. The Studio Fine Art and Framing is the fifth business to receive this designation in 2017, joining Hotel Estes, River Spruce Cabins, Wildflower Mercantile, and Patterson Glassworks Studio & Gallery. The committee will award the next “Business Bright Spot” Sept. 1. The program will continue every other Friday through the month of September. Town Outlines New Processes For Requesting Funding And Sponsorships Now accepting applications for 2018 community initiative funding The Town of Estes Park recently revised its processes for reviewing requests for funding, in-kind support and sponsorships from outside entities. The Town appropriates support to local organizations that help meet the needs of Estes Valley residents at the discretion of the Town Board, subject to current Town Board goals and availability of funds. Included in this program are Community Initiative Funds, for which the Town is currently accepting applications from organizations serving the Estes Valley.

Community Initiative Funds were previously known as Community Service Grants.

To apply for 2018 funding, organizations must complete a Community Initiative Funding Application and supporting documents by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.

On August 10 at 11:14 a.m. police arrested a 61 year old female from Estes Park and charged her with soliciting business on the streets and obstructing a peace officer. She was later released on a summons.

On August 10 at 10:54 a.m. police issued a citation to a 29 year old male in the 600 block of Aspen Ave. for unsecured trash and a violation against the wildlife protection ordinance.

On August 14 at 1:48 p.m. a 48 year old male from Boulder, CO who was wanted on a warrant turned himself in at the Estes Park Police Dept. Station. He was wanted on failure to appear on a building code violation. He was later released on a summons.

On August 14 at 1:46 a.m. police issued a citation for a violation against the wildlife protection order to a business in the 200 block of Park Lane for an unsecured dumpster.

On August 16 at 10:55 p.m. police arrested a 26 year old male from Estes Park who was found to be wanted on two warrants out of Fort Collins. One was for failure to appear in a careless driving charge and the other was a charge for driving without a driver’s license. He was later released on a PR bond.

The Town Board will prioritize funding requests at its Oct. 20 Budget Study Session. Funding is ultimately subject to Town Board approval of its budget in November. Organizations receiving funds for 2018 will be required to submit a final project report in 2019. Organizations that received funds in 2017 must file a report no later than March 1, 2018.

The form was mailed with 2017 funding award letters. If needed, an additional copy can be picked up in the Administration Office in Town Hall.

The Town has also outlined a process to review requests for base funding from a pre-approved list of nonprofits that play critical roles in supporting the Town’s Strategic Plan. The list of eligible organizations is reviewed every three years. Additionally, nonprofits hosting an event for the Estes Valley may request Town sponsorship funding. These sponsorships shall not exceed $1,000 and an organization may receive only one sponsorship per year. Estes Park In Bloom Committee Thanks Local Sponsors Community representatives to attend symposium this fall America in Bloom judges Tony Ferrara and Barbara Vincentsen visited Estes Park July 10 and 11 for evaluation of its entry into the America in Bloom program. During the visit, the steering committee and community partners guided the judges on tours of downtown Estes Park, the Estes Park Museum, the YMCA, the Recreation and Park District grounds and the Stanley Hotel. The judges and steering committee also visited recent “Business Bright Spot” winner River Spruce Cabins.

Local sponsors supporting the America in Bloom judges’ visit included Mama Rose’s Italian Restaurant, Claire’s on the Park, Baldpate Inn, Rock Cut Brewing, Snowy Peaks Winery, the Estes Valley Library, Rustic Mountain Charm, Estes Valley Recreation and Park District, YMCA of the Rockies, Visit Estes Park and the Town of Estes Park.

Estes Park participated in the American in Bloom program for the fifth consecutive year this year, entered by the Town of Estes Park and YMCA of the Rockies. For the 2017 America in Bloom entry, the community advanced to the Circle of Champions as a medium community, competing against Washington, Missouri and Winter Park, Florida.

Awards will be presented at the America in Bloom Symposium and Awards Program which takes place Oct. 5-7 in Holliston, Massachusetts. Representing the community will be Mayor Pro Tem Wendy

Koenig, Keri Kelly of the Town’s Public Works Department and Suzanna Simpson of the Administration Department.

America in Bloom is a non-profit, nationwide program promoting beautification through education and community involvement, while utilizing flowers, plants, trees, and other lifestyle enhancements.

Locally known as Estes Park in Bloom, the project is a community-wide effort involving businesses, residents and Town government. America in Bloom is the only organization of its kind offering an award program with on- site, one-onone mentoring and coaching by a team of expert judges who will provide the local committee with a detailed, written evaluation following its visit. The evaluation is based upon six criteria: floral displays, urban forestry, landscaped areas, heritage preservation, environmental efforts, and the overall impression/cleanliness of the community. Community Invited To Celebrate The Gift Of Mrs. Walsh’s Garden To The Town The Town of Estes Park cordially invites the public to attend a ceremony and reception celebrating the gift of Mrs. Walsh’s Garden by the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado to the Town of Estes Park Friday, Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. at the site of Mrs. Walsh’s Garden, 322 West Elkhorn Ave. The Community Foundation Trust donated the property to the Town of Estes Park, a gift during the Town’s centennial year. A covenant ensures the garden will continue to be used as a demonstration xeriscape garden for plants native to the Rocky Mountain region. An endowment from the Community Foundation will provide funding to the Town for annual maintenance and repair costs.

Mrs. Walsh’s Garden was created by Judy Lamy to honor her grandmother Winifred “Peggy” Walsh. Walsh was the daughter of a U.S. Cavalry officer of the

frontier west. The Walshes were early residents of Estes Park. The original mission of the garden was to be “a source of pleasure, education, and inspiration by demonstrating the use of plants native to Estes Park and surrounding Rocky Mountain region.” The 2013 flood caused extensive damage when the cliff adjacent to the garden collapsed, destroying trees, benches, the irrigation system and the pathway. After the initial repairs and rehabilitation, the garden was reopened to the public. It is open daily from dawn to dusk.

Your Actions Can Save The Life Of A Bear Each fall, bears eat, eat, eat as they get ready to sleep, sleep, sleep. This period of massive caloric intake is called hyperphagia. Bears can consume up to 20,000 calories a day! Their quest for calories has begun and the Estes Valley Bear Education Task Force would like to remind you about some important facts: 1. Black bears have big appetites. They are mostly vegetarian but they aren’t picky - anything slightly edible will do.

They consider our trash, their food.

2. Black bears are nosey. They are curious and follow their noses to food. Bears can smell food five miles away!

3. Black bears are busybodies. They can be active anytime, anywhere, day or night.

4. Black bears are smart. They learn quickly to identify food, packaging and containers. Once bears find an easy meal they’ll be back for more.

5. Black bears are naturally shy. They usually avoid people, but once conditioned to human food, they may become

6. People’s actions can alter bear behavior. Bears that eat human food (and trash) are drawn close to homes and businesses and may become problem animals.

Estes Park has increasing numbers of bear activities and incidents. This summer Estes Park Police have noted increased bear incidents, primarily due to trash management. Multiple bears frequent the town after dark, particularly the commercial area downtown.

These close calls present a safety hazard for our residents and guests. The increase in incidents is likely the result of our past actions. We can do better!

Estes Valley CAN be a great place for people, bears and other watchable wildlife. We want a healthy bear population so that we all can continue to have memorable wildlife experiences, and we want bears in their natural environment where they can be seen...from a safe distance.

Monitored Weed Drop-Off August 26th Keep pulling and bagging those noxious weeds! Now is the time to remove mature weeds that contain seeds that will be next year’s -- and many more

years -- weeds. A Monitored Weed Drop-off will be held this Sat. August 26 from 9:00 to noon located north of the Waste Management transfer station (across from Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ) at 666 Elm Road. ELSA (Estes Land Stewardship Association) volunteers will be on hand to answer weed questions and unload your bags. Bring in your weeds – no slash, pine needles, trash – in paper yard bags for free disposal. Please remove/shake off dirt from plant roots. Unauthorized drop-

offs at this location are considered theft of services. Weeds and trash can be disposed of year-around at Waste Management for a fee. No bags of non-weed materials will be accepted at this event. Paper yard bags are available for purchase at local hardware stores. These events are being made possible with the support from ELSA, the Town of Estes Park, Colorado Dept. of Agriculture, Estes Valley Land Trust, and Larimer County. EVRPD Announces The Launch Of Ongoing Room Rentals For New Community Center

Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in Estes Valley, is pleased to announce the implementation of the ongoing room reservation system for 2018 for the Estes Valley Community Center.

Ongoing room rentals are meetings or activities that occur on a weekly, biweekly or other regular basis. The reservation priority deadline is Friday, September 15, 2017.

“Our goal is to accommodate all room rental requests,” said Teresa Jackson, Manager of Community Center Operations for EVRPD. “Many groups, however, request the same room during the same time. Following the application deadline, staff will review all room requests and allocate rooms as fairly as possible, including asking users to modify their schedule.”

The community center has more than 4,000 square feet of facility rental space.

The three multi-purpose rooms are attractive, well-designed spaces, which can be rented individually for small meetings or parties. The multi-purpose rooms can also open up to one large room with hardwood dance floor to accommodate up to 200 people.

Additionally, a full-service kitchen is available to rent with the multi-purpose room. The classroom has tile floors and a built-in audio-visual system, making it the ideal setting for small group meetings.

EVRPD will begin taking applications for single-use functions on Monday, September 16, 2017. Rental requests for a particular day and time may be made

within one year of the event date. All rentals are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spaces are available to rent on an hourly basis. Tables and chairs are included in the rental and will be arranged according to the event setup requested by the renter. Rental rates are available at evrpd.com.

To reserve a room, please submit a completed room rental application. Applications are available at evrpd.com or can be picked up at the recreation office located at 380 Community Drive, Estes Park, Colo.

Fourteenth Annual John Denver Tribute Concert Set For Labor Day Weekend Brad Fitch and The TropiCowboy Band will present their 14th annual John Denver Tribute Concert in Estes Park on Saturday, Sept. 2 at the YMCA of the Rockies’ Ruesch Auditorium. This concert, featuring classic songs from the legendary Denver, will benefit the Estes Park Lions Club charities.

Funds raised will go to organizations for the sight and hearing impaired, community social services and local scholarships.

“The annual John Denver Tribute in Estes Park is one of the most gratifying concerts that I perform, and I am proud to keep Denver’s music, memory and messages alive through this event,” Fitch said.

The concert will once again be held in the Walter G. Ruesch Auditorium at the YMCA of the Rockies, which was remodeled just last year. Seats may be reserved on-line. Doors will open at 4:00 and the opening act, Dahlby and Nadine, will begin at 5:00. The John Denver tribute will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Repertoire Theatre Company Moves To New Home Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company (EPRTC) is alive and well and is preparing for our next season.

A lot has happened over the winter including, but not limited to, our new home.

EPRTC has moved its stage and production home to the American Legion building where much redecorating is underway.

We are looking forward to our new home, relationship with the Legion, and a great season of theatre.

The Legion has totally redecorated the large room and installed a stage curtain, etc. Our stage was moved to the room and

has been upgraded to better serve our theatre goers. The Legion will be using the larger stage for other events when EPRTC is not actively involved in a production.

We will soon be announcing our 20172018 season so watch for the announcements.

Elizabeth Guild Continues Support Of Medical Center The Elizabeth Guild has a long history of supporting the Estes Park Medical Center. Proceeds from the Guild’s thrift shop and Lizzie’s Boutique enabled another $65,000 to be given to EPMC this year. Those funds will be used for EPMC staff continuing education scholarships and to underwrite the purchase of equipment that supports patient care. Including this year’s gift, the Elizabeth Guild has raised nearly $4 million for the Medical Center. “We’ve been working hard to improve the shopping experience at the thrift shop,� said Gayle Lively, manager of both stores. “We receive wonderful donations and want to be sure that our shoppers can easily access those great finds. That work will in-turn enable us to give even more to the Medical Center.�

In the early 1970s, a group of 46 ladies met and founded the Elizabeth Guild Auxiliary. Named in memory of the late wife of Roger Knutsson, a long-time summer resident and benefactor to the Medical Center, this group of ladies started a nearly new shop to raise funds.

The Guild added Lizzie’s Boutique in the same shopping center to provide a space for higher-end merchandise and fashions.

Both shops are open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and are located in the West Park Center at 443 W. Elkhorn Ave. Donations of clothing, linens, home goods, books, toys and small appliances are welcome during those hours at the Elizabeth Guild Thrift Shop. As a 501Š3 nonprofit, donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Fatality Above Chasm Lake In Rocky Mountain National Park On Wednesday morning, August 23, park rangers were notified via cell phone that a 73 year old male had taken a tumbling fall while descending Mount Lady Washington in Rocky Mountain National Park above Chasm Lake. Bystanders who witnessed the fall aided the man by performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Rangers were nearby in the Chasm Shelter area and reached the man in 15 minutes.

Rangers also performed CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man has been identified as Ken Teselle of Estes Park. Ken was a park volunteer and was off duty when the incident occurred. Because of the location and poor weather conditions, recovery efforts began Thursday morning. Rangers stayed in the area overnight.

Visitor Badges To Be Implemented At Estes Park Medical Center By: Kerrie Hill, EPMC

In an effort to provide a higher level of safety and security to patients and staff, Estes Park Medical Center has initiated an identification badging system for all hospital visitors, vendors, sales representatives, and contractors that will be effective August 30, 2017.

Upon entering points of entry such as the main lobby or the Emergency Department entrance, all visitors (12 years old and older) other than clinic and rehabilitation patients, and family or other escorts of clinic patients, shall sign in to obtain their visitor badge. Sign in for badges can be done at all check-in areas.

All visitor badges are valid for one day.

Visitors coming to the facility multiple times throughout a day do not need to stop at the lobby once they have their badge for the day.

Contractors such as HVAC service, plumbing service, bio med, and electrical service will check out badges in the Facilities Department. Contractors will check out their badges at arrival and check the badge in at the end of the day. All sales representatives and vendors must schedule appointments with EPMC personnel prior their arrival at the facility.

Delivery personnel (food, flowers, etc.) must also sign in at one of the check-in areas prior to completing their delivery.

“Estes Park Medical Center’s number one priority is the safety of our patients, visitors, and employee,” said Larry Leaming, CEO. “I thank the community for their patience as this new security measure is implemented. We could not achieve this level of security without the communities’ support and cooperation.”

An Evening With Butterflies And Their Host Plants Join the Estes Valley Community Gardeners and local butterfly expert Rich Bray on Wednesday evening, September 6th to learn about local butterflies and the native, host plants that attract them.

We’ll start at 6:30 p.m. with a look at the host plants growing in the Community Garden, then move to the Recreation Center just north of the Garden for a presentation by Rich Bray on what host plants work well at this elevation and which butterflies they might attract. Time for questions and answers will follow.

Rich Bray has spent 22 years inventorying and monitoring butterflies in Rocky Mountain National Park.

He received the 2016 Citizen Science Award from the Park for his work in developing and leading the Rocky Mountain Butterfly Project between 1995 and 2011. During those years his team chalked up over 37,000 volunteer hours, with Rich contributing over 17,000. He has developed a notebook for the Com-

munity Garden with information on local butterfly species and the host plants they prefer. All are welcome to use this resource for planting suggestions for Community Garden plots or in home landscaping plans.

The Estes Valley Community Garden (EVCG) is located on the northeast corner of Manford Avenue and Community Drive, across the street from the new Community Center (under construction) and next to the Stanley Park Skate Park. The EVCG is a 501(c)3 non-profit and has been in operation for two seasons. Members of the EVCG Board place a high priority on community outreach in helping local citizens become knowledgeable about plants, insects, vegetable gardening, and enriching the environmental health of the area.

The Recycle Queen Is Gone At 89 Estes Park lost a leading citizen on August 18, 2017 with the death of Jean Weaver, 89. She passed at home near the Big Thompson River as she desired.

Born an only child on April 13, 1928 in Trenton, NJ, Jean grew up a tomboy and worked in the Land Army during WWII. Even then she had a passion for recycling, working on scrap drives. She attended Trenton Teachers College (now The College of New Jersey). After her third year of college, she and a classmate hitchhiked out to Colorado Springs to pursue a summer job waitressing. That was all it took. When she returned to finish her degree, she informed her parents that Colorado was the place for her. Her dream became reality when she moved to Estes Park in 1950.

Jean lodged in Mrs. Baldridge’s Colonial Rooms boarding house and waited tables at the Old Plantation Restaurant. She met and married Carl Wilbur “Web” Weaver in May, 1951. The two shared a love of the outdoors. He, a fisherman and hunter and she, the hiker and mountain climber.

They, like many others, despaired of work in the winter here and so tried to find employment in Arizona. Jean didn’t even last the winter there.

Jean took a job in the kitchen at Hidden Valley Ski Area. She tried to teach herself skiing. Don and Ann Leonard decided she would do well so they hired her to teach as she was still being taught. The first year she was only one lesson ahead of her students. In time, she became a certified instructor in both downhill and

cross country skiing.

She began hiking in a big way by climbing Longs Peak twelve times and all the 13,000’ peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park. She was the first woman to do so.

Jean also completed 3/4 of the 14,000’ peaks in Colorado. Jean was a member of the Thursday Hiking Club (that had a long time running joke of hardly ever hiking on Thursdays).

Hiking most of the trails in the park, Jean’s adventurous streak led her on many backcountry, bushwhacking expeditions.

Around 1973, Jean got involved in the recycling program that had been started at Estes Park High School. Over the years she helped the program grow

into what it is today.

She became a charter member of the Beaver Point Association. In March 1972 she lived on Trail Ridge Road helping a researcher studying the high alpine environment.

She loved showing slides of the Park at the YMCA, playing softball, attending the Q U meetings and her Wednesday Patriots For Peace group.

Parkinson’s curtailed her ability to hike or ski, but not her adventurous spirit.

Once Jean achieved the status of “living

legend,” laudatory newspaper profiles became more commonplace and on in particular found the mark: “We are better off today because of Jean Weaver having been our neighbor all these years.”

A celebration of Jean’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 13 from 3 p.m.

- 5 p.m. at the Estes Park Senior Center.

Price of admission will be two empty aluminum cans in Jean’s honor. You will be able to take home one of her many medals that she won during her lifetime.

Hayden’s Surveys: An Illustrated Presentation Aug. 31 At Museum Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden viewed Colorado as the next best place for mining and resource development for the United States following the Civil War. His well-known survey created during the 1870s was intended to hasten that process.

Tom Huber, Professor of Geography and Environmental Studie,s University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, selected nineteen of the exact spots where many of Hayden’s men sketched pen and ink drawings of the landscape before them. These nineteen spots and the total of twenty-eight drawings on which Huber did “repeat” photography constitute the chapters of his book “The Hayden’s Surveys Revisited.”

On Thursday, August 31 at 3:00 p.m. join Professor Huber for an illustrated description of the geology, geography, history, and changes that occurred including Longs Peak and the Saint Vrain Valley near Lyons and the unique character of each site as they were recorded in the 1870s. The Estes Park Silent Film Festival will come to a close on Friday, August 25. It’s been a highly successful festival which ran on Fridays in July and August. An informal survey indicated a lot of tourists attended and more than half the people in the audience were repeat attendees.

This week, three Charlie Chase films will be shown.

Unlike his contemporaries, Chase’s films focussed on situation comedies rather than slapstick. He emphasized characterization and farce instead of pies in the face and slipping on banana peels.

He usually played a pleasant young man with a dapper mustache and ordinary street clothes instead of some of the clownish makeups and crazy costumes worn by other silent film stars.

The films that will be shown for this last

festival date will be “Mighty Like a Moose,� “Bromo and Juliet� and “Fluttering Hearts.� These are considered by many to be some of the finest films of the silent film era.

As usual, the action on the screen will be accompanied by Scott “Flying Fingers� Wilseck. There will also be old time piano music before the movies begin. “Fluttering Hearts� is a favorite of Scott’s. He says, “I remember when I was just starting out as a silent film pianist. It was easy to find music to match the action of ‘Fluttering Hearts’. The person running the festival at that time, Steve Smersh, told me I had this film ‘nailed’.

The songs just seemed to be appropriate to what was happening on the screen.

The movie was fun to watch and it was easy to prepare the music to play along with the film.�

So this is your last chance to see silent films in Estes Park until 2018. The films start at 5 p.m, but if you come early you can listen to some music played on the old piano. It’s a great time to come downtown and take in some great family entertainment.

Estes Park Veterans Monument By: Vern Mertz

During a seven year period, ending in 2016, Estes Park citizens were very generous. Generous in supporting WWII, Korean, Vietnam and any Purple Heart veterans that wanted to visit memorials built in their honor in our nations capital.

There was no cost to the veteran for their trip to Washington D. C. In those few years over $100,000 was raised by the Estes Park Honor Flight committee. This was accomplished by generous donations from you, the citizens of Estes Park and fund-raising programs. Since there is money in reserve to continue sending veterans to D. C., the committee has since changed their focus.

In the spring of 2017 a few members of the committee thought it would be fitting if Estes Park had a veterans monument and park. Communities and cities throughout the state and country honor veterans that served their country by building monuments or memorials.

They took their idea to the Town Administrator, Frank Lancaster and Park Supervisor Brian Berg. Both Lancaster and Berg were receptive to the idea. Possible locations were discussed before a final decision was agreed upon. The grassy lawn area between the sidewalk and the Big Thompson River just west of the Visitors Center seemed appropriate. There were three Town boards that had to put

their stamp of approval before the project could move ahead. Our spokesperson first met with the Parks Advisory Board, then the Public Works Department. Receiving approval from each board we got on the Town Board agenda.

The Mayor and all of the Town Trustees approved our proposal for the monument and location.

Following their approval our committee kicked-off a fund-raising project. As you can see on the thermometer our budget is set at $75,000 and we are approaching that figure. Money raised to date has been through generous donations and fund-raising programs.

We have not received any money from grants or corporate sponsorship. We do not plan to break ground until we reach our goal. If we do not start construction by early September, we might miss the target date for dedication, Veterans Day, November 11, 2017. The next few weeks we need a big push to blow that hat right off of the thermometer. Let's do it and show our veterans that Estes Park supports them for serving our country in time of peace and in time of war.

Mystery Veteran Of The Week Last week’s mystery veteran? Tom Maher! This week’s picture is of a World War II veteran with the synopsis of his service written by his daughter. Hint: He and his wife recently moved from Estes to lower altitude.

Dad turned 18 on September 13, 1943 and registered for the draft. He was called up to Fort Omaha on October 10, 1943 and enlisted in the Navy.

He was officially inducted into the Navy on November 11, 1943.

He went to boot camp in Farragut, Idaho – a cold and tiring experience.

Next up was training in the amphibious branch of the Navy in Norfolk, Virginia.

Dad was awed by the Atlantic Ocean. His training was on small landing crafts used to transport and land army and marine personnel along with their equipment.

He trained with a crew of 55 men and was promoted to FC I – Fireman First Class.

Then it was onto Philadelphia to his assigned ship – LSM 207 (Landing Ship Medium) – his home for the next 22 months. They departed Philadelphia on June 1, 1944 and arrived in Pearl Harbor

on December 7, 1944. They departed Pearl Harbor January 23, 1945 and ultimately arrived at Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945.

At the battle of Iwo Jima, they shuttled ammunition, vehicles, supplies and equipment to the beaches and removed casualties from the beaches and took them to the hospital ships. Dad was there for the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi. This went on until the end of the battle on March 26, 1945.

Dad’s ship left Iwo Jima on May 25, 1945 and made its way to San Diego, CA for repairs. During that time, Japan surrendered unconditionally on August 14, 1945 and the war in the Pacific was ended. They headed back to Pearl Harbor, HI and after some R and R, headed for Long Beach, CA. From Long Beach, they went east through the Panama Canal and arrived in New Orleans in February 1946. They arrived at the start of the first Mardi Gras to be held since the start of WWII. LSM was decommissioned at Lake Charles, LA on May 2, 1946. Dad was honorably discharged from the Navy on March 28, 1946. He took advantage of the GI Bill and attended Buena Vista College (now Buena Vista University) in Storm Lake, Iowa.

“THE HEAVENS ‘DECLARED’ THE GLORY OF G0D!” Centuries ago, David joyously announced, “The heavens declare the glory of God and the earth shows His handiwork.” While this happens constantly…we here in Estes Park see it all around us…the event of this week has certainly shown how impacting is the display of His handiwork on our world. Most of us took note of the eclipse while thousands more did so in more vigorous ways. Traffic jams resulted as people tried to find the very best vantage point from which to view this rare celestial wonder. Airlines set up special flights, resorts and RV facilities were stretched to the limit, gasoline and food supplies were in short supply as people rushed to get where they could get the best view. One town I know of is counting on the seven million dollars they will ‘take in’ this week for their long term economic survival. Who / what is responsible for this awesome celestial display? Some say ‘nature’. Hopefully, most of us say ‘God’.

The solar eclipse should reinforce our awareness of the great power of God. All were warned to ‘be sure to have appropriate glasses’. We heard from people who had foolishly failed to listen to wise advice about the sun’s power in the past and now suffer the consequences.

Some years ago a man was talking with a friend about whether there is a God. At one point his friend ventured, “I’ll believe there’s a God when I see Him. Show me God and then I’ll believe!”

His friend said, “Let’s go outside.” They did. He told his friend to look at the sun. His friend said, “You know I can’t do that. I would go blind or worse.” His wise friend chided him, “You can’t even look at one of God’s ‘creatures’ without suffering. What makes you think you could look at God, the ‘Creator’ of that sun, and survive?” Moses was told by God, “No one can look at Me and live.” (Exodus 33) The great power of God was on display this week. We were privileged to view it.

This eclipse should also strengthen our awareness of the greatness of God’s ‘timing’ in the world and the universe. Long ago, at a fair conducted in France, an American craftsman set up a miniature moving display of the universe, with its sun, moon and planets. A man visited it whom the ‘creator’ knew claimed not to believe in God. The display’s builder watched as the man carefully examined every aspect of the exhibit, obviously quite impressed. Finally the man turned and asked, “Who made this? This is incredible!” The display builder said, calmly, “No one. I just took all these small planets and wires and threw them into a box, shook it vigorously and out came this solar system!” The man scoffed at his answer, failing to realize that his view that the world ‘just happened’ with no ‘creator’, was so much more foolish. The ‘timing’ of everything in the universe is mind-boggling. How is it that people could predict the precise ‘time’ that this eclipse would occur so that needed arrangements: travel, eye-protecting glasses, hotel accommodations, etc. could be made and people could be in place to view God’s handiwork at work. Because of God’s predictability we can already start planning for the next display of this nature in just seven years. Save your glasses!

I certainly hope that all who made proper preparation to view a glorious part of His creation, thus avoiding negative consequences, will, in the same way, make ‘proper preparation’ so that when we come face-to-face with the Creator…as we will…we will enjoy the same awesome and blessing experience as we’ve had this week.

New Six-Week Class Series: Hands For Healing With Chi Kung Practices

The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division is offering a new six-week Chi Kung class series at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. Classes will be held on Fridays, September 15 through October 20, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The cost for the six-week series is $32 for members of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. or $46 for nonmembers. Stop by the Senior Center with cash or check to register by Friday, September 8. A minimum of 8 participants is needed.

The class will be taught by long-time Estes Park resident Janet Lee Biasi. Since 2001 she has completed more than 800 hours of Chi Kung instruction at the Center Place in Boulder and continues her studies through their ongoing postgraduate program. Janet is also a certified

massage therapist and yoga instructor.

She welcomes people of all ages to the class, and no previous experience is necessary.

According to Janet, “The centers of our palms emit extraordinary energy. It has been found through scientific research in China that the palms emit a combination of infrasonic, electromagnetic, microwave, and infrared wavelengths. Use of the hands can greatly influence a person’s energy.”

In this six-week series, Janet will teach simple exercises using the hands to gather and bring healing energy into the body. Being open and receptive to healing elements in nature, as well as ourselves, energy is gathered in through the palms and used to cleanse the body of negativity. These practices can be done sitting or standing and may include gentle movement, self-applied massage, breath exercises, and deep relaxation or meditation in order to help one center, focus, and relax.

The Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division is offering an eight-week N’Balance class at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street. The class is sponsored by a grant from the Larimer County Office on Aging as part of a fall prevention initiative. N’Balance is an evidenced based program developed by the Consortium for Older Adult Wellness.

This is a progressive exercise class that will help you feel better, decrease falls, and increase self-confidence and independence.

Certified N’ Balance instructors Kelly Claypool and Beth Headley will lead the class.

The eight-week series will be held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., September 14 through October 20. Pre-testing assessments will take place in the afternoon on Tuesday, September 12. There is no cost, however, donations to the Larimer County Office on Aging are welcome.

Registration will open on Tuesday, August 29 and must be done in person at the Senior Center. Registration for the series includes a brief pre-assessment.

Senior Center To Offer Tai Chi For Arthritis And Fall Prevention

Due to the popularity of the first sixweek series, the Town of Estes Park’s Senior Services Division will offer another six-week Tai Chi class series at the Estes Park Senior Center, 220 Fourth Street.

Classes will be held on Fridays, September 15 through October 20, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. The cost for the six- week series is $39 for members of Estes Park Senior Citizens Center, Inc. or $53 for nonmembers. Classes will be taught by Mike Curtiss, a licensed physical therapist with over 30 years of experience in his profession. He has been a practitioner of the Wu style of Tai Chi for over 20 years and received his training from Shihan Eric Adams of Estes Park. Additionally, he completed instructor training in “Tai Chi for Arthritis” and “Tai Chi for Balance to Reduce the Risk of Falls” through the Arthritis Foundation of

Proven to reduce pain, Tai Chi is a safe exercise and an internal art which stresses the integration and balance of mind and body. This class is easy, enjoyable, and ideal for beginners with or without arthritis. Participants will learn slow, smooth, continuous movements that strengthen internal muscles and loosen joints and ligaments while calming the mind. Practicing a mind-body exercise like Tai Chi builds confidence, thus reducing the fear of falling which ultimately results in less falls.

The elk rut in the Estes Valley is underway and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife now urges us to please look around our homes, yards and businesses for items that the bulls may get tangled up in.

Just this week a large bull got his antlers caught in a child’s swing. The swing was hanging outside and while the homeowner was away, a bull happened by and tried to spar with the swing. Imagine the shock when the homeowner came home to find the bull with their swing hanging from the bull’s antlers.

This is too common an occurrence in the fall when bulls try to spar with anything that moves.

When bull elk are pumped up with testosterone, anything that moves can be of interest to that bull. Swings, hammocks, volleyball nets and tire swings blowing in the wind pose a challenge for the elk and they will approach these items and actually spar with them. This can be a very dangerous practice as their antlers can easily become entangled in these items we have all around our homes and yards.

The CPW is urging all residents to

bring these items in for the fall, to avoid any encounters such as the entangled bulls shown on this page.

According to CPW Wildlife Managers, they anticipate they will have to drug immobilize several elk this season that will get tangled in a fence, a piece of playground equipment, even lawn furniture.

This kind of entrapment is totally preventable, just take a walk around your home and yard and look to see what an animal might get caught up in.

Sometimes, elk are able to be rescued from entanglements by drug immobilizing them and then freeing them from whatever they are caught up in. Often times though, the results are tragic and the bulls die.

Lets make sure to look over our yards and bring in anything that might pose an entrapment hazard for our resident elk.

Do it today, your actions could save the lives of these beautiful creatures.

Adult Classes With September Start Dates - Register Now! It is back to school season! Estes Outreach presents continuing education opportunities for learners of all ages.

Classes this fall range from studio art to a three-part series on the history of WWI to a girls-only science club. Many classes take place at the Estes Park schools; all classes are open to the public. The Story Of Greenback Cutthroat Trout With Trout Unlimited And Wilderness & Whisky

After two successful meetings in June and July, the local chapter of Trout Unlimited brings another event to the Estes Valley next week!

On Monday, August 28th, Trout Unlimited in partnership with Wilderness and Whisky presents “Greenback Cutthroat: Status and Future of Colorado’s State Fish.” Over the past several decades this species of trout has gone through several ups and downs with federal and state agencies and non-profits working to restore populations to its native range. After nearly being declared extinct, extensive restoration efforts occurred within Northern Colorado, including in Rocky Mountain National Park. These initial efforts were thought to be highly successful, until researchers discovered a purer genetic strain of the fish near Colorado Springs. This discovery was a major set

back to initial recovery efforts; however, for the past few years since the discovery of the original Greenback Cutthroat, the state fish has been making headway with the major support of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and community organizations like Trout Unlimited.

This Monday, Dan Omasta, Grassroots Coordinator for Colorado Trout Unlimited, will be speaking about the history of the recovery effort, recent accomplishments, and the future of the species.

Arts And Commerce After Hours Atop New Parking Garage

Last Thursday, Aug. 17, was an absolutely beautiful day! No rain, for the first time in weeks! A welcome respite for attendees of the Arts and Commerce After Hours event on the top of the new parking garage. Besides offering an alternative to the loop-de-loop of looking for a parking space for more than 400 cars, the view is spectacular! If you have not been up there, you really should go just to see the panorama, especially at sunset.

Arts and Commerce is a co-sponsored event for members and guests of the Estes Valley Partners for Commerce and the Estes Arts District. The Town of Estes Park hosted the August event which continued well beyond the usual 5 to 7 p.m. as everyone enjoyed the benefits of networking and the beauty of the Estes landscape from on high.

pork (sandwich buns were available), chicken wings, coleslaw and beans. The Town brought sodas and the ever popular ice cold water. Libations were provided by EVPC and our craft beverage companies: Elkins Distillery; Estes Park Brewery, Lumpy Ridge Brewery, Rock Cut Brewery and Snowy Peaks Winery.

Everyone ate their fill while discussing Town issues, the unique economics of our Valley, and the joys of mountain living.

What is Platte River Power Authority’s Proposed Carbon-Free Energy Initiative?

In response to widespread interest in renewable or carbon-free electricity, the Platte River Power Authority (PRPA), which provides energy for Fort Collins, Loveland, Longmont, and Estes Park, has embarked on an ambitious study of how it might deliver “100% (net) carbon-free” energy to all four municipalities by 2030. A group representing the municipalities met on 8/14 with the PRPA CEO to obtain more information about this new initiative. Since it is a complex, dynamic process, involving other organizations and ongoing computer modeling, little is available in the way of specific information at this time.

However, I can offer some clarification and address some associated concerns.

Regarding the concept of “100% (net) carbon-free,” there are various potential ways for providing carbon-free energy from wind, sun and hydropower. Since wind and solar energy are not constant in a particular area, they can be sourced and combined from different locations and can be further stabilized using storage techniques. Although there are ongoing advances in storage technology (especially with batteries), the PRPA does not recognize utility-scale storage as being viable at this time. Instead, they are considering the use of existing gas turbines to back up (or stabilize) proposed additional renewable energy sources, as necessary. To compensate for CO2 emitted by the limited use of gas, the PRPA is proposing to generate “excess” renewable energy, which would be sold on the open market in order to “net out” gas carbon emissions and result in the goal of “100% (net) carbon-free. ” Potential increased use of gas has caused strong concerns among utility users, who consider “fracked” natural gas with associated methane emissions to be worse for the environment and climate change than burning coal. The PRPA is aware that its customers want carbon-free electricity and that building

additional gas facilities would be unacceptable. Also, the PRPA CEO has assured us that continuing advances in storage technology will be carefully monitored, and recent studies indicate that gas back-up should not be needed by 2030 when this plan is fully implemented.

Another expressed concern has involved whether “renewable energy” would include “renewable energy certificates” (RECs, or energy only on paper). Whereas the PRPA does buy and sell RECs currently, those who spoke with the CEO were given the impression that RECs would not displace bona fide renewable energy in the new plan.

A third significant concern is affordability of electricity. Being a non-profit public utility, the PRPA has been able to keep prices relatively low. Whereas wholesale costs for wind and solar energy have been even lower, the PRPA points out that additional “integration, stabilization, and transmission” requirements could result in higher charges. This situation can be expected to improve over time because renewable energy has fixed long-term prices, which is not the case for fossil fuels. In any case, the PRPA will have its numbers checked by an independent organization, and representatives of the municipalities will also examine cost factors carefully.

I believe this new study by the PRPA can be a “win-win-win” situation.

First, the PRPA is seriously examining its future options in the burgeoning clean energy market. Second, the municipalities can realistically consider the long-term economic and environmental advantages of renewable energy. Third, this plan could eliminate millions of tons of CO2 emissions per year, to the benefit of the climate and future generations. I commend the PRPA for embarking on this important endeavor.

This year, the Relay raised over $45,000 to support the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives from cancer. It you can play violin, viola, cello, bass, harp, oboe, or bassoon, the Oratorio Society of Estes Park needs you. If you are an intermediate level player comfortable with classical music, OSEP would love to have you play with them. It also welcomes singers for all parts in the chorus.

Rehearsals for the Dec. 15 & 16 concerts begin Sept. 17th and 18th. The chorus rehearses Sunday afternoons from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. beginning Sept.

17th at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 2000 Ptarmigan Trail.

Orchestra rehearsals are every Monday evening beginning Sept. 18th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Ave. “You could call our December concert “Bach, Brubaker, and Ballet, ” said conductor Kathy Bowers, “because we have music from Johann Sebastian Bach and Estes Park’s own Jerry Brubaker, and Ballet Renaissance once again will be performing with us as well. We are so impressed by and proud of our local ballet company, and we love collaborating with it. ” The first half of the December concert will be sacred music; the second half secular, totaling a little over an hour’s worth of music. Bach’s “Cantata 61 for Advent” (strings, bassoon, continuo, chorus, and soloists) ; “Cantata 54” (alto solo with strings and continuo) featuring local soloist Denise Stookesberry; Vaughan Williams “Fantasia on Greensleeves” (strings, harp and ballet) ; Lucian Dres-

sel’s “T’was the Night Before Christmas” (full orchestra, chorus and soloists); Robert Howard’s new cantata “Winter in the Rockies” (chorus, full orchestra, soloists and ballet); and finally Jerry Brubaker’s arrangement of music from “Polar Express” for full orchestra. It should be fun for everyone, both performers and audience!

Bowers says OSEP needs “some really solid players” for this concert. Co-conductor Robert Howard adds that while the need for players is great, “it’s not just the playing and singing that make this a marvelous experience; it’s also a cheerful, great activity to be a part of. ” Some of the participants have told Bowers “this is the best thing I do all week. ” If you want to try something new and different and exciting in your life, give the Oratorio Society of Estes Park a few hours of your time each week.

On Wednesday, August 30th, at the Baldpate Inn, Magell Candelaria will be presenting on “Colorado Rocky Mountains: Origin and History.” This topic stems from his deep personal interest in learning the history of development of the Colorado Front Range Mountains of which RMNP is but a small part.

Through this presentation, Magell’s hope is twofold: 1) to increase awareness of the geological marvel these mountains represent, and 2) foster a deeper appreciation for the origin and history of the Colorado Rockies that exist literally, in our back yard, and that we all enjoy throughout the year and every year.

Magell, a native of Southern California, earned a Master's of Geology from the University of Wisconsin in 1982 and is recently retired from Ft. Worth-based Range Resources Corporation after 34 years in the oil and gas industry. His career began in oil and gas working for ARCO Exploration Company in Denver, Colorado, during which time he met wife, Kathleen, whom he married shortly after being transferred to Texas in 1986.

Magell has lived and worked in Texas for various companies and enjoyed brief overseas assignments in South America and Middle East. During his career, he has been active in various professional societies giving numerous presentations to geologists at both the local and national levels as well as to various school groups. Last year, 2016, Magell presented at the Baldpate Inn’s Summer Enchanted Evenings on the topic of 'Glacial Geology of Rocky Mountain National Park'. His talk on this Wednesday night is sure to be as interesting and enjoyable.

The Summer Enchanted Evenings at the Baldpate Inn, on Highway 7, are held every Wednesday throughout the summer beginning at 7 p.m. There is no charge, and refreshments are provided in the Key Room. EPHS Volleyball Underway The EPHS Volleyball Team was busy this week with practice, team bonding events and games. At their second team bonding event, the team completed a cooking challenge where they divided into groups, and each cooked a part of a complete meal. The team had to work together to make sure things came out on time, they shared equipment and space, and communicated to make the meal come together. “The ladies did a great job working together and communicating with each other, just like they do on the court, to make this meal happen� said Head Coach Anna Weddle. “It’s very rewarding to see the team come together like this.� EPHS Ladycats Volleyball kicks off their season on the road with their first game Thursday, August 24 at Wiggins. What’s Happening At The Estes Valley Library Solar Eclipse Thank-You The Library wishes to thank the hundreds of residents and visitors who took part in solar eclipse festivities last Monday morning, both at the Library and at its partner site, the Estes Park Memorial Observatory. Participants enjoyed the positive spirit of our community sharing in the celebration of this rare natural phenomenon. Clear skies held through most of the morning, and peak eclipse views did appear through late-morning cloud cover. Special thanks goes to the many volunteers who helped greet and assist participants at both sites.

Express Creativity Libraries Go “Outside the Lines” Special events September 10 through 15 “Outside the Lines” is a week-long celebration spotlighting the creativity and innovation taking place in America’s public libraries. Deceased Woman Found Near North Inlet Trailhead In RMNP On August 22, park rangers located a vehicle at the North Inlet Trailhead parking area that was connected to an advisory regarding a welfare check. The woman’s body was found near Tonahutu Creek close to the trailhead.

The woman was identified as Teresa Sajsa, 59, of Englewood, Colorado. The cause of death will be determined by Grand County Coroner’s office. No further information will be released at this time.

Donald Edmund Lowe peacefully passed away August 12 while on vacation in Northern Wisconsin. He was 85 years old.

He was born in Bonnie Dune, North Carolina in 1931, and was the son of Harvey and Reba Lowe and brother of Vera Lowe Johnson who preceded him in death. He was the son of an Army Master Sergeant and lived on various Army posts around the country.

He graduated from Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee in 1950 and was a member of the National Guard which was activated after his high school graduation. After two years in the Army he attended college at the University of Tennessee.

In 1954, he joined the Air Force and entered the Pilot Training Program, graduating at the top of his class. He was stationed in Duluth, Minnesota where he met his future wife Susan.

They were married in December of 1957. After eight years in the Air Force, they made the decision to leave the military and Don was hired by American Airlines. He was based in Dallas, Texas and retired after 26 years. He retired as a Captain and spent several years as a flight instructor at the American Airlines Flight Academy.

Donald and his wife Susan were blessed with seven children who were raised in the Dallas area. In 1996, Donald and Susan moved to Estes Park, Colorado. Donald was actively involved with Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church along with local civic

organizations including the Noon Rotary, Crossroads Ministry, and Furniture Connection. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader but mostly loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Susan Lowe (nee Michalke); Loving father of Thomas Lowe of North Richland Hills, Texas; Elizabeth (Daniel) Beaty of Lewisville, Texas; Catherine (Michael) Neece of Colleyville, Texas; Mary (Michael) Hargrove of Colleyville, Texas; Jennifer (Richard) Jamieson, Middletown, Virginia; David (Kelly) Lowe, Cincinnati, Ohio; and Paula (Peter) Bolan of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He is the grandfather of Mark Nelson; Kathleen (Nicolas) Ricciardelli; Clare (Blaine) Shawaker; Margaret Neece; Olivia and Grace Beaty; Sarah, Ellen, Elizabeth, Luke, Mary Clare, Thomas, and Michael Jamieson; Ryan, Collin, and Aiden Lowe; Madeleine, Caroline, Kathleen, Audrey, and Peter Bolan III. He is the great grandfather of Leo Ricciardelli and Lyla Shawaker. He is also survived by a large extended family including five sister and three brother inlaws, and numerous nieces, and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Mass was held at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church on August 23rd. James was born in Vernal, UT on November 22, 1954 to parents William and Betty (Spencer) Wood. James spent his childhood in Lakewood, CO and graduated from Bear Creek High School in 1973, he would later move to Boulder and attend C.U. and receive a bachelor’s degree. He married Cassandra Fox on April 20, 1980 in Colorado Springs, CO. They moved to San Marcos, CA and lived there from 1984 till 1993. After that they moved back to CO and lived in Broomfield until they made Estes Park, CO their home in 2013. James was a guitar player- songwriter and guitar luthier and built tube amplifiers for guitars. He was always happy to be outside for any reason especially to walk his

three big Labradoodles, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

James is survived by his wife Cassandra of Estes Park, two sons William of Clarksville, TN and Sean of Estes Park, daughter Erin of Estes Park, two brothers, Casey of Laramie, WY and Scott of Ft. Collins, CO; three grandchildren Vincent, Isaac and Lilly of Clarksville, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Spencer. Robert (Bob) Ebel June 22nd, 1925 – August 19th, 2017 Robert (Bob) Arthur Ebel of Overland Park, Kansas passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes early Saturday morning August 19th, 2017 at his Bickford apartment in Mission, Kansas. At the age of 92, Robert had lived in the Kansas City area since 1952. He was born in Hillsboro Kansas on June 22nd, 1925, and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1943. Shortly after high-school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Force and served in Brazil as an electronics radio technician during WWII. After his honorable discharge at the age of 22, he started his first business in 1947, “Ebel Radio Service” in Hillsboro, KS. By late 1948 he was working to further his technical education by attending Central Radio and Television School in
