Each September and October, thousands of visitors are drawn to Estes Park to watch herds of elk gather in the valley for their mating season, or “rut.�

With this popular activity comes the responsibility for everyone to be safe and respect these majestic animals. During the rut, the male “bull� elk are irritable, aggressive and extremely dangerous to onlookers who get too close. Estes Park Police Chief Wes Kufeld commented, “The elk in town may seem tame, but they are still wild and unpredictable. Safety should be first on the minds of elk- viewers, so they can have a great experience.� “Every day our Estes Park Emergency Communications Center receives numerous calls for police officers or police auxiliary to respond to elk issues around Town, and the vast majority of issues are caused by people,� commented Chief Kufeld. He explained that the

most common reports to dispatch are people getting too close to the elk and “elk jams,� caused when drivers park their vehicles in the way of traffic in order to watch the elk.

The Police Department provides the following tips to visitors for safe elk viewing: • Elk are wild animals which must be observed from a safe distance to avoid injury

or death. If an animal is carefully watching you and appears “jumpyâ€? when you move, you are too close. • Keep pets secured on a leash and do not allow them to bark at, lunge at, or chase wildlife. • Never block traffic. Move your vehicle to a safe place completely off the roadway to watch elk. • Do not imitate an elk call, or bugle, when elk are irritable during the rut. This can endanger you and the elk. • Elk know no boundaries, but people do. Respect private property when viewing wildlife.

The same tips should be considered each spring when calving season takes place. During this time, female elk, or cows, become irritable and highly protective of their young calves. Though they may look harmless, like the bull elk during the rut, cows are extremely dangerous during calving season. The Estes Park Police Department and the Police Auxiliary periodically assist with wildlife education and may provide “safe viewing� tip cards when they are on the scene of a wildlife viewing opportunity.

The Estes Park Police Department does enforce wildlife laws including laws against feeding or harassing wildlife, or allowing one’s pet to harass wildlife. Reminder For Closure Areas During Elk Rut Season In Rocky Mountain National Park On September 1, park officials put closures in place for travel on foot or horse off established roadways or designated trails from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. These closures last through October 31 and are effective in Horseshoe Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, Moraine Park, Harbison Meadow and Holzwarth Meadow in Rocky Mountain National Park. Fishing in the Fall River, Thompson River or Colorado River within the posted areas

and during the closure period is prohibited.

The purpose of the closures is to prevent disturbance and harassment of elk during their fall mating period and to enhance visitor elk viewing opportunities. As always, elk calling and the use of spotlights or vehicle headlights for spotting wildlife is prohibited in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Operation Game Thief Offers $1,000 Reward For Information On Killing Of Two Bears In Estes Park Through Operation Game Thief (OGT), Colorado Parks & Wildlife is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the filing of charges in the killing of two bears in Estes Park.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is working with the Estes Park Police Department seeking information concerning the killing of two black bears in the 500 block of Ponderosa Drive within the Town of Estes Park, Colorado. The incident occurred on the evening of August 22 or early morning of August 23. The first bear succumbed quickly due to its injuries and the second bear was found dead on the morning of the 24th. Both bears died in close proximity and it is likely that the deaths are related. Both agencies are working collaboratively to solve the crime.

Funded through private donations, OGT provides rewards for information that assists Colorado Parks and Wildlife in solving fish and wildlife related crimes. Generally rewards on cases involving big game pay $500, however due to the flagrant nature of this violation involving two bears, the reward has been enhanced. Information and tips may be submitted by calling the OGT TIP Line at 1-877-265-6648. Reporting parties may remain anonymous.

Estes Park In Bloom Committee Proud To Introduce “Neighborhood Bright Spot!”

The Estes Park in Bloom steering committee is excited to offer a monthly column as a platform for the community to share information, expertise, and passion about projects that align with the committee’s goal of engaging the community in beautification, preservation, environmental efforts and civic pride.

By: Keri Kelly: Estes Park in Bloom steering committee As a member of the Estes Park in Bloom steering committee I am excited to introduce our next venture, and I hope it is well received by our community. We are just finishing up our second summer of the “Business Bright Spot” program. This has been a great way to recognize the outstanding efforts of businesses that go the extra mile to beautify their exteriors with landscaping, floral displays and overall tidiness. The program has been well-received by the business community and many of our residents are offering up their nominations for the most beautiful businesses in the Estes Valley.

Beginning June, 2018 the Estes Park in Bloom steering committee will expand the “Bright Spot” program to include residential accomplishments. This component will be called the “Neighborhood Bright Spot!”

When efforts are taken to enhance the beauty of our natural environment through landscapes and floral displays in homes and businesses, spaces are created for all to enjoy and the pride in our community shines through. We look forward to distinguishing those who plant pride in our community, making the Estes Valley an even more beautiful place to live, work and play!

As a kick off to the “Neighborhood Bright Spot” program the Estes Park in Bloom steering committee would like to recognize one of Estes Park’s outstanding residential landscapes, the home of Vince and Karen Gerber featured on the 2016 America in Bloom and Communities in Bloom judge’s tours. Please see the story of how their home came to life with their landscape.

-Keri Kelly The Story of the Beer Garden When we moved into our home in 2008, the entire north side of the house was barren and the granite-based soils were exposed. We called it ‘The Ditch’. After the floods in 2013, the area was still unsightly, it was obvious we had to do something with it! Joining the Estes Park Garden Club was an opportunity to get advice from professional botanists and landscaping locals for the help we so badly needed to redesign our yard. We started with a plan and now have a lovely terraced patio bordered on the street side with a living, growing ‘fence’ to buffer the traffic noises. We have also added many steps, large rocks and rock walls that surround the plants and trees. Except for a one-day push with help to set the large steps and rocks, we have moved and set all the other rocks and planted all the trees, shrubs and flowers ourselves. The plants have now had three years to develop and each year we add more perennials and shrubs to beautify our gardens. Every year we also get a better idea of which plants do well and which are sacrificed to the local herds of deer, elk, rabbits and marmots. Last year we added a fountain that attracts birds and butterflies. Instead of ‘the ditch’, we now have what my husband calls ‘our beer garden’, a lovely area to relax, dine and visit with friends and family.

On August 26 at 1:30 a.m. police responded to a vehicle accident at Fish Creek and Brodie Drive. Upon arrival police arrested the 24 year old driver from Longmont, CO who was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

On August 30 at 9:24 a.m. police were called to 134 W. Elkhorn Avenue on a report of unsecured trash. The homeowner was issued a citation for a violation against the Wildlife Protection Order.

On August 30 at 10:00 a.m. police were called to a theft at 1110 Woodstock Drive.

Upon arrival they arrested a 38 year old male from Estes Park for theft. He was issued a summons and later released.

On August 31 at 2:09 a.m. police learned of unsecured trash at 543 Big Thompson Ave. The homeowner was issued a citation for a violation against the Wildlife Protection Order.

On August 31 at 7:03 a.m. police contacted a 27 year old male from Estes Park and charged him with unlawful conduct on private property at 380 Community Drive. He was issued a summons and later released.

On September 1 at 7:05 a.m. police learned of an unsecured dumpster at 900 Moraine Ave. The business owner at this location was issued a citation for a violation against the Wildlife Protection Order.

On September 1 at 10:44 a.m. police were called to 405 Birch Ave. on a report of unsecured trash. The homeowner was issued a citation for a violation against the Wildlife Protection Order.

On September 1 at 7:48 a.m. police were called to 860 Moraine Ave. on a report of a theft. Upon arrival police charged a 21 year old female with theft and she was later released on a summons.

On September 9 at 12:57 a.m. police were called to a disturbance at Rockwell Ave. and Moraine Ave. Upon arrival they arrested a 28 year old male from Portland, OR and charged him with disorderly conduct and third degree assault against three victims and transported him to Larimer County Detention Center.

Visitor Badges To Be Implemented At Estes Park Medical Center By: Kerrie Hill, EPMC

In an effort to provide a higher level of safety and security to patients and staff, Estes Park Medical Center has initiated an identification badging system for all hospital visitors, vendors, sales representatives, and contractors that became effective August 30, 2017.

Upon entering points of entry such as the main lobby or the Emergency Department entrance, all visitors (12 years old and older) other than clinic and rehabilitation patients, and family or other escorts of clinic patients, shall sign in to obtain their visitor badge. Sign in for badges can be done at all check-in areas.

All visitor badges are valid for one day.

Visitors coming to the facility multiple times throughout a day do not need to stop at the lobby once they have their badge for the day.

Contractors such as HVAC service, plumbing service, bio med, and electrical service will check out badges in the Facilities Department. Contractors will check out their badges at arrival and check the badge in at the end of the day. All sales representatives and vendors must schedule appointments with EPMC personnel prior their arrival at the facility.

Delivery personnel (food, flowers, etc.) must also sign in at one of the check-in areas prior to completing their delivery.

Town Board & Board Of County Commissioners To Discuss Code Amendments List Sept. 18 The Estes Park Town Board and the Board of Larimer County Commissioners will discuss a master list of recommended revisions to the Estes Valley Development Code next week in a joint study session. The study session will take place in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave., at 7 p.m.

As study sessions do not provide for public comment, discussion will be among elected officials and staff. However, the meeting is open to all citizens to hear the discussion. Estes Valley Planning Commission members have been invited to be available for the discussion as well. The Sept. 18 meeting is expected to be part of an ongoing, fully transparent public dialog as the Estes Valley community works to bring development regulations into the present day.

In May 2017, the Community Development Department presented a master list of recommended changes to the Development Code. The list outlined reasons the current code needs significant revision and outlined approximately 50 sets of changes needed. The amendments could take as long as 17 years to complete. A faster, but still deliberate, pace would allow needed progress to be made.

The master list was unanimously approved by the Town Board May 9. The same list was discussed by the County

Commissioners at a May 22 work session, with the Commissioners expressing interest in reviewing the list’s individual amendments. On Sept. 18, the same master list will be discussed, with each item on the list assigned a priority to allow an orderly approach.

The Estes Valley model for land-use regulations is unique in Colorado. The Town of Estes Park and Larimer County partnered in the mid-1990s to develop the Estes Valley Comprehensive Plan, a unified vision for land-use planning in both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the Estes Valley. In 2000, they jointly established the Estes Valley Development Code. The Planning Commission reviews development and subdivision proposals within the entire Estes Valley, though the final decision-making authority lies with the Larimer County Commissioners and Town Board for their respective jurisdictions.

Town Begins Winterizing Parks And Landscaped Areas Late September The Town of Estes Park's Public Works staff will begin the annual winterization of all Town-owned parks and landscaped areas the last week of September. This includes aerating turf, dividing and pruning perennials, blowing out irrigation systems, pulling and turning annual beds and pruning trees and their branches to

clear the way for snow plows. Staff will begin with the outlying parks and work into the downtown area. Weather permitting, the work is estimated to be complete by early November.

Let’s Work Toward Positive Outcomes By: Jon Nicholas President/CEO, Estes Park EDC

Over the last year, Estes Park EDC has devoted substantial time and effort to educating the community about the need for Workforce Housing. Our organization started in large part due to the steep decline in 35-44 year old residents in Estes Park. According to the U. S. Census, we experienced a 28 percent population decline in this working age bracket from 2000 to 2010, and the decline accelerated to 45 percent from 2000 to 2013.

This has profound implications for the sustainability of our Hospital, the School District, police and fire services, and the community as a whole.

In April, I wrote about the need for development code changes to facilitate workforce housing, including a height increase for Multifamily Residential zones to enable three-story apartments in the RM Zones (about 1.8 percent of the Estes Valley’s available land area). A recent Denver Post story reveals that seven Front Range counties rank among the twelve least affordable for housing nationwide—that list includes both Boulder and Larimer counties. In short, we cannot expect other communities to solve our problem.

There are also larger issues with the Development Code that need to be addressed. In late 2015, the Regional Economic Strategy, funded by an EDA grant concluded that “if development codes and processes are not revised to match the needs of local businesses, the Estes Valley will not see necessary investments in redevelopment and local business expansions.” This has major implications for the quality of life of this community, which depends upon the availability of quality services.

In May, Community Development Director Randy Hunt presented the Town Board with a proposal to begin work on clarifying and simplifying the Development Code. Facilitating workforce housing is only a subset of the bigger issue of code complexity, code ambiguity and internal code conflicts. Last year I spoke at a public hearing regarding the Lazy B Ranch proposal to stress one point: regardless of what the Board decided, ambiguous code provisions were unfair to both applicants and neighboring residents and businesses. This process was unfair to all residents, regardless of what development policies they support.

I thought it important that community members read a fair summary of the staff memo from May of 2017. Below are some of the key points from the memo.

First, the memo mentions that the “Estes Valley Development Code is difficult to administer and confusing to the development community and public.

This fundamental fact means there’s an immediate, in fact urgent, task before us: extensively revising our Development Code.”

One of the examples provided was that it is estimated that one-fourth of the

homes in the Estes Valley do not comply with minimum lot sizes and/or current setback requirements. As a result, anyone wanting to pull a building permit to do significant work on their home must seek approval for a variance.

Second, the memo states that the purpose of amending the Development Code is to align that code to meet defined goals: 1) Simplify, streamline and make more transparent and accountable all elements of the Estes Valley Development Code 2) Update language, procedures and criteria to meet current standards; 3) Impose clearly defined and understandable regulations (so that an ordinary citizen as well as professionals, developers and elected officials can read it and understand what is written) ; 4) For projects, balance the wishes and needs of the neighbors with the overall well-being of the entire community; 5) Identify a clear process with measurable benchmarks for Development Code procedure; 6) Use a deliberate speed approach to process timelines, with adequate time for public comment, staff analysis and decision-maker review--without arbitrary delays; and 7) Reduce to the minimum the number of approvals with lengthy “conditions” (some of them are not approvals at all, and others are difficult to monitor and enforce).

These goals appear to be worthwhile.

Placing greater burdens on figuring out what the Code means does not promote fair enforcement.

Third, the memo references as a disadvantage the fact that it will be seen (by some) as changing some of the “fundamental assumptions” under which the community has been operating. Based on prior experience, it appears to me that the key assumption is that amending the Code should take four to 18 months—for every such amendment-- rather than six to eight weeks. In a time of great online transparency and instant communication, community members can and do provide input on potential code changes.

Another one of the disadvantages of acting noted in Randy Hunt’s memo is that “change itself is seen as threatening and produces fear among some. ” That is unfortunate. Our options to address workforce housing are to: build up (concentrate density in specific places) ; build out (which would potentially affect single-family residential neighborhoods), or do nothing. Doing nothing is not a good option. If we care about being a multigenerational community, let’s take action--starting now. The Town Board and County Commissioners will meet on September 18 to discuss potential code changes over the next two or three years.

To accomplish positive action, let’s have an informed and dispassionate discussion focused on desired outcomes and goals that best serve the needs of the community.

One day last week the morning moisture on my windshield was slushy cold, as if the heavy dew was thinking long and hard about freezing onto the glass. But then the temperature rose and the opportunity passed.

Don’t even think about it, I uttered, sneering at that little patch of snow up on the side of Longs. Not yet! I left my ice scraper in the trunk—a place the scraper doesn’t know very well since it spends so little time there. It’s more familiar on the floor behind the front seat, close at hand to use well into June, don’tcha know.

This year we’ve hardly had summer, with that totally inappropriate and uninvited snowstorm in late May, those heavy, gray weeks of monsoon rains in August, and the thick haze of distant forest fires blocking the sun—and obliterating Longs Peak altogether—for several days last week. We’ve been cheated out of so many of the perfect, yet limited, summer days that draw us to Estes Park, and now, to top it off, the aspens are starting to turn.

Yep, those cheery, bright green leaves that dance and play from their dainty white branches through the summer months are starting to look anemic. Up high we even see some splotches of pure gold. Overachievers showing off.

What is happening to create this personality change in our aspen groves?

From the AccuWeather website we learn: As the tree grows throughout the spring and summer months, chlorophyll is constantly replaced in the leaves. The chlorophyll gives the leaves their green color. As the nights get longer in the early fall, the cells near the juncture of the leaf and stem divide rapidly but do not expand. This action of the cells form a layer called the abscission

layer. The abscission layer then blocks the transportation of materials from the leaf to the branch and from the roots to the leaves. As the chlorophyll is blocked from the leaves, it disappears completely from them. The lack of chlorophyll allows the yellow (xanthophylls) and orange (carotenoids) pigments to be visible.

Temperature, light and soil moisture all influence the timing of the changing of the leaves in the fall. They say the trees may peak early if we have a cold snap (was that one really cold morning last week considered a “snap”?) but if we have higher than normal carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere the change can be delayed. They also say rainy weather intensifies the color so we have that to look forward to after our drenching August, as long as we don’t get a big, blustery w-w-w—. Oh, forget it. I’m not going to curse the trees by saying that dreaded w-word. Of course a freeze can shut the whole show down, and with the way the unpredictable climate is these days, that could happen tomorrow.

When I look at the calendar it tells me it is mid-September by now, even when I squeeze my eyes shut, shake my head to clear it, then look again. Peak viewing season in our region is typically the third or fourth week of September through the middle of October, but the timing seems off, even if it isn’t.

Autumn is my favorite season. The elk in rut are entertaining, the trees in transition are stunning, the available parking spaces in the park are welcomed, but I’m just I’m not ready to hand over summer quite yet.

Estes Valley Recreation and Park District (EVRPD), provider of numerous recreational and community activities in Estes Valley, is pleased to announce a threemonth pilot for a weekly lunch program at the Estes Valley Community Center starting in February 2018.

The District has been successful in securing a partner in SupplyWorks to launch the program at the Estes Valley Community Center. SupplyWorks generously awarded EVRPD with a $5,000 grant to facilitate the lunch program.

SupplyWorks is the leading national provider of integrated facility maintenance products, ranging from janitorial and cleaning supplies to plumbing, electrical, HVAC and more. Veterans From Estes Park Set To Leave On Honor Flight By: Vern Mertz, WWII Veteran

Following his 2010 Northern Colorado Honor Flight trip into Washington, DC, WWII Veteran Bob Brunson came up with the idea that funds should be raised to support veterans from Estes Park on the Honor Flight. An Estes Park Honor Flight committee was formed that year and beyond all expectations $100,000 was raised in six years. Carey Stevanus, Activity Director at Good Samaritan Village, had raised funds in 2009 to send WWII veterans living at Good Sam's.

Money the committee raised was through sponsorships, movie donations and putting on musical programs. Initially only WWII veterans went on the flight. Northern Colorado Honor Flight hosts two flights a year into Washington, DC, one in May and again in September, leaving on Sunday returning home on Monday. The veterans do not pay for

their air flight or accommodations.

While in our nation’s capital they visit the memorials built in their honor, the WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Air Force and Iwo Jima Memorials. One hundred and twenty veterans from Northern Colorado and 65-70 guardians go on each flight.

Volunteer guardians pay their own fare, $1,000, for the trip. Korean, Vietnam and any veteran that is the recipient of a Purple Heart are now eligible to go on the trip. Honor Flight is the trip of a lifetime.

To date, 82 veterans from Estes Park and the Estes Valley have made the trip. The EPHF has money in reserve to continue supporting the project. The next Honor Flight is this Sunday and Monday, September 17 and 18. Two veterans from Estes Park will be on that flight, WWII veteran Fred Hagen and Vietnam veteran Dwight Standburg. Dallas Maurer will be going as a guardian. After send-off cere-

monies at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Loveland 75-100 motorcyclists from the Patriot Motorcycle Club will escort the four bus loads of veterans and guardians to DIA. Along with the motorcycle escort, there will be helicopter and sheriff patrols. Large crowds will line the frontage roads and overpasses shouting, holding up banners and waving the American Flag in honor of these heroes.

Now that the committee has money in reserve to continue the support of our veterans to go on the Honor Flight, committee members have changed their focus. Last fall it was suggested that a Veterans Monument should be constructed, honoring all veterans that have served our community. The area considered is west of the Visitors Center on the grassy lawn between the sidewalk and Big Thompson River. After final approval by the Mayor and Board of Trusties a fund-

raising project was put into motion. The projected cost is $75,000 and construction will begin when that figure has been reached. The Veterans Monument is to honor all veterans who served our country, both in time of peace and in time of war. Orders have been placed for six bronze plaques, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard. A bronze flag will be affixed to a centerpiece and a bronze eagle, with an 80 inch wing span, will top off the monument. Dedication of the Veterans Monument is scheduled to be on Veterans Day, November 11, 2017. Watch for a financial report in next week’s Estes Park News to see if $75,000 has been topped and the hat has been blown off of the chart.

Tasting Whiskey If you were in Estes Park last weekend, you may have attended the 41st Annual Longs Peak Scottish Irish Highland Festival. It was a great weekend, but the part I enjoyed most was the whiskey classes offered by the Brand Ambassadors for Highland Park and The Macallan Scotch whisky. The sessions were very informative and as I was listening, taking notes and tippling, it occurred to me that many folks who want to come to a “Tasting” may be a little intimidated by the prospect. After all, you often read about how aficionados can discern various aromas as they nose the whiskey. Then, on the tongue, they get the taste of vanilla or ripe fruit, grass, or any number of flavors.

Well, the professionals can do this, but most of us simply get a feeling of “I like this” or “I don’t like this.” This is all good and it is why going to a Whiskey Tasting is a good idea. By tasting a wide variety of spirits, you can begin to determine if you are a person who likes a strong, heavy and possibly smoky spirit or who leans more to a sweeter or even a spicy spirit.

This weekend I learned about products from two great Scottish distilleries, but to really begin your adventure into learning about fine whiskey (and rum, vodka, gin and agavé spirits) you need to come to an event like the Whiskey Summit in Estes Park on October 7th. Approximately 40 craft spirits producers from Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming will be represented and each will bring five to eight of their best products.

So how do you begin your learning experience? If you are a complete novice, start by sampling one or two products (referred to as “expressions) from each of the major categories of spirit: whiskey, gin, vodka, rum and agavé. Take notes on what you liked or did not like about what you tasted. Note: This is not the place to make any final decisions! All these spirits have their unique place in the spirit world. Some are best in cocktails and some are great all by themselves. At this point, you just want to narrow your search adventure. Do you want to spend

the rest of the afternoon exploring whiskey? If so, do you want to go to something a bit sweet like bourbon, or do you want a bit of the spiciness found in rye whiskey? You'll find Scotch-style whiskeys and at least one new Irish-style whiskey from Colorado distilleries at the Whiskey Summit, so if you think Scotch/Irish may be your thing, your adventure can continue.

If you already know your spirit preference then you are in for a real treat because the distilleries in attendance (check them out at WhiskeySummit.org ) have all done their homework and are producing high-quality spirits. The fun is determining why you like one expression over another. The job of the Brand Ambassadors who serve you is to help you through the process. Ask them what grains go into making their product and what is the recipe. (A recipe in the distilled spirits world is called a Mashbill.) Bourbon, for instance, must be at least 51% corn, generally mixed with a percentage of barley or rye or wheat or all of the above. It is the grain mashbill that begins to build the flavor profile. Begins is the operative word. Trail Ridge Printing Company was recently purchased by Estes Park residents, Elia and Dena King.

Trail Ridge Printing was established in 2012 as a partnership between Tim Buck and Ron Shumate, two long-time Colorado residents with a shared passion for high-quality screen printed apparel and accessories. Ron launched Earthprints, his own screen-printing shop, in 1982, and earned a reputation for dependable service and technical expertise. Tim joined Ron to form Trail Ridge Printing Company on the basis of over 45 years of combined experience in the screen printing industry, and the two continued to grow the company's reputation for outstanding quality and reliable turnaround.

Elia and Dena became familiar with Trail Ridge Printing working closely with Tim and Ron on a product line for The Grey House, a mountain boutique on Elkhorn Avenue that Dena co-owns with her sister Dani Stafford. "We feel great

Veteran Of The Week

The Veteran of the Week two weeks ago was the great Les Foiles.

This weeks veteran has many family members in Estes and gets to go to a warmer climate now for the winter. Here is what he says about his service during World War II, “I entered the Army infantry in October of 1944 and I trained in Texas. In March of ‘45, I spent 30 days on a troop ship, enroute to the Philippines for combat. I was assigned to a supply tent in combat and I was trained to invade Japan. When the war ended, I was promoted to Senior Enlisted Supply Sergeant and sent to Korea. I don't regret one thing.�

The title of the book is a play on my University, L.S.U. Our mascot is a real, live tiger called Mike VII. Yes, Mike the VII, VII as we have had six others before him all called Mike. The original tiger was obtained in 1936 and lived to 1956, the year I graduated. Marie, my veterinarian daughter, has a picture of her with another one of the Mikes as she had the privilege of helping with his care when she attended vet school at L.S.U. The book was a gift from other L.S.U. alumni and also a dear friend, Susan H. Flipping through “Tiger Bait” the other day brought back so many dear memories of those college days but also my life in Louisiana from a child in New Orleans to my marriage to Caliste. I grew up in New Orleans with a terrific, wonderful cook, my mother, who taught me to appreciate good food and the preparing of various, wonderful dishes. One need not go to a fancy restaurant to have stuffed eggplant with shrimp, candied carrots, green beans with red sauce and ham and small potatoes, oyster soup, etouffe', red fish court bouillon or bread pudding. All of these and so many other “gourmet” dishes were prepared by my mom on her very ancient gas stove. The same style stove is now featured in a museum in Washington, D.C. As a side note, I can remember her joy and excitement when she finally got a brand new Roger gas range.

Since I am on memory lane today I thought you might like one of my mom’s recipes. It is a very simple spinach dish but I get raves whenever I serve creamed spinach.

Mary Theresa’s Creamed Spinach 2 pounds of fresh spinach, cooked, drained and chopped. (Or one 10 ounce package of frozen, drained) 1 small onion, diced fine 3 Tbs. flour 3 Tbs. butter

1 cup half and half 1-2 boiled eggs, peeled and sliced ¼ cup Parmesan cheese Saute’ the onions in butter until they are clear and soft. Add flour slowly and cook a few minutes. Slowly add half and half and cook to obtain a thick white sauce, Béchamel sauce, toss in the spinach and warm slowly. When ready to serve, place in warmed bowl (everything gets cold up here so quickly), and dress with the cheese and the sliced eggs. Voila’ a dish to enjoy. Thanks mom, so many happy memories and teaching me the love of good cooking.

Now I thought I would have to give you a recipe for either rabbit or hind leg of Sunshine. Every time I think we are done with silly behavior, Sunshine proves me wrong. The other morning I was casually walking her and holding the leash rather lightly…mistake! Now this is eight o’clock, a rather early time, when she spies a rabbit. Off she goes like a flash with me holding an empty lead. I start yelling “Sunshine” at the top of my lungs.

Oh good, here she comes but so does the rabbit and there she goes after it. This went on for over five minutes with me standing in the middle of the street watching the two of them go back and forth through all of my neighbors’ yards.

I must admit she was a sight of beauty in motion. Finally she must have tired or given up, so here she comes so proudly carrying a stick in her mouth. She had decided she wanted to play with me instead of the rabbit. You can guess how I decided to reward her. I did not do anything naughty; I just took the stick and pitched it while holding her back. I explained she was crazy if she thought I was going to play with her and we promptly went home. Life is never dull with Sunshine. But that is why I called her Sunshine; my days are all so sunny with her!

Crop Walk For The Hungry This Sunday, Sept. 17 The 2017 CROP Walk for the Hungry around Lake Estes will be this Sunday, September 17, and will start at 1:30 from the back, or south side, of the Estes Park Visitors’ Center, just east of the Highway 34 and 36 intersections.

Twenty-five percent of all receipts will go to Crossroads, our local pantry program which provides for families in need. Seventy-five percent of receipts will go to Church World Service, which provides for emergency and self-help

programs here in the U.S. and around the world.

One example of Church World Service at work is in Kenya, Africa; meeting the needs of refugees from Somalia, Eretria, South Sudan and other Central African countries, fleeing because of drought, ethnic conflict, and religious conflict.

“WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET…PRAYERFUL!” There have been few times in recent history where the ‘going’ has gotten more ‘tough’ than right now. When you consider Hurricane Harvey and the destruction in south Texas and nearby areas, coupled with Irma and the devastation wreaked on Florida and along the eastern seaboard, toss in some worry about the northern fires, and then top it off with concern about threats being made by North Korea, we would all agree that the ‘going has gotten tough’. What do ‘tough’ people do under such circumstances? Perhaps we can gain some helpful insight from a ‘tough’ situation from the past.

Many of us can remember the eruption of Mount St. Helens. One man interviewed had ‘come back alive’ with pictures and sound track of his own personal nightmare. A reporter for a local television station, he was in close to the crater when the mountain suddenly rumbled to life, spewing steam and sending ash miles into the air, across several states. He ran for his life. With camera rolling and the mike on, he stumbled down the mountain. The pictures were, of course, blurred and murky, but his voice was something else. After all this was played on a talk show he said he only vaguely recalled saying some of the recorded things. As he stumbled down the mountain, he breathed deeply, sobbed many times, panted, and spoke directly to God…no formality, no clichés, just the despairing cry of God’s creature in crisis. Things like, “Oh, God, oh, my God…help! Help! Oh, Lord God, get me through. God I need you, please help me; I don’t know where I am”—more sobbing, more rapid breathing, spitting, gagging, coughing, panting—“It’s so hot, so dark, help me, God! Please, please, please, please…oh, God!” I’m sure that thousands of people share a similar despair and horrifying fear today. As people are being buffeted by the tremendous winds and drenched by unrelenting rains, and are watching their world being swept away, what will ‘tough’ people do? Well, of course, many will summon up the courage and concern for others causing them to leap to the rescue, helping as many others as they can, after making sure their family members are safe. Others, from all over the nation, will dig deeply into their pockets to contribute to the Red Cross or local churches or benevolent agencies, so that some of those massive needs can be met. Some will join teams and go to stricken areas to help people clean up damaged areas, thus helping them to start to rebuild.

In the midst of all these wonderful physical efforts, one thing being employed right now, as it is in all disaster situations, is, like our man on Mt. St. Helens, fervent prayer. We have reflected this week on the horrendous losses of the tragedy of 9/11. We remember the widespread outpouring of prayer, and answers to prayer, that took place at that time. Prayer is desperately needed along with all physical efforts to bring about an improving situation. David wrote: When in the ‘slimy pit…the mud and the mire, I cried out and God heard my prayer’. In his deep distress in the ‘belly of the fish’, choking on salt water and engulfed by the Mediterranean currents, Jonah cried out for help and it was given. We must pray. “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of” wrote Tennyson. James said, “You receive not (needed things) because you ask not.”

Today’s “Table Settings 101” To Preview Museum Friends’ Fundraiser

The Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation is hosting Table Settings 101 today, September 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Estes Park Museum. This free one-hour presentation will feature a variety of displays of creative table settings, with ideas on how best to utilize and arrange the tableware that many of us save for special occasions. Today’s event is a prelude to the second annual Creative Colorado TableSettings competition, taking place October 27-29 at the YMCA of the Rockies.

Today’s program will offer anyone considering an entry their opportunity to gain a sense of the style and set-up that might lead to a winning arrangement.

Snacks and refreshments will be served, and Museum Friends board members will discuss the specific details of the competition and the registration process. Individuals, families, businesses, and children alike are all invited to consider entering, and today’s event will feature photographs from last year’s winning entries. “Relationships� A Readers Theatre Presentation Estes Park Repertoire Theatre Company invites interested persons to audition for “Relationships� - a Readers Theatre program consisting of various scripts exploring the humorous nature of categories such as Children, Space Travel, Aging, Crime and Adam and Eve. Readers Theatre is sometimes described as “Theatre of the Imagination� or “Theatre of the Mind.� It occupies a niche somewhere between a speech and a play, with emphasis on suggestion and vivid reading that places the action primarily in the mind of the audience member.

The scripts, which are held during the performance, are either adapted from various forms of literature such as prose, poetry and drama or created as original dialogue specifically for Readers Theatre presentations. EPHS Marching Band Ready For Homecoming The EPHS Marching Band invites you to come watch their homecoming performance on Friday, September 22nd during the football game halftime. The band has won the State 1A Championships the past two years, and are in preparation to defend their title in hopes of a third straight win! Their show this year is entitled Phoenix Rising, and depicts the death and rebirth of the Phoenix.

The Marching Band had their first “mini� band camp in June, and then hit it hard with multiple camps for Percussion, Colorguard, and Band beginning at the end of July. For weeks on end, and up to eight hours a day, the band has devoted themselves to playing and memorizing their music, as well as their marching formations. There is still a lot of work to be done before the State Championships in October, but without a doubt, the band will be ready!

The performance at homecoming will feature the “Opener� for Phoenix Rising and the band would be thrilled to have the Estes community in attendance to see and hear the product of their hard work!

In addition, the 7th and 8th grade band will join the high school Pep Band, and together they will be rocking the stadium during the game as we cheer on our Estes Park Bobcats. Game starts at 7:00 p.m.

Story About A Local Who Survived A Plane Crash- �Miracle On Buffalo Pass�

Estes Valley Library and Macdonald Book Shop present author Harrison Jones and Miracle On Buffalo Pass Flight 217 crashed on December 4, 1978 east of Steamboat Springs, killing two. This is the story of the twenty passengers rescued that night.

Join us in the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library on Sunday, September 24th, 2017, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Author Harrison Jones will speak at 2:00 p.m. followed by book signing. Local businessman and First Officer of Flight 217, Gary Coleman, will be present to greet friends.

On the evening of December 4, 1978, Rocky Mountain Airways Flight 217 departed Steamboat Springs, Colorado, bound for Denver with twenty-two people on board. Less than an hour later, severe downdrafts and icing conditions on the plane forced the flight down on Buffalo Pass at an altitude of 10,500 feet. The tragic accident triggered one of the most intense search and rescue efforts in Rocky Mountain history. Passengers and crew found themselves struggling to sur-

Coleman says. “Everyone can do something in a period of stress that is helpful to other people.â€? Coleman and his brother Don own Estes Park Ride-A-Kart, and try to make a difference in the lives of their employees by helping them develop a positive work ethic as the opportunities arise.

Fine Arts & Crafts Festival This Weekend In Bond Park

It’s time! The 42nd Annual Fine Arts & Crafts Festival will be at Bond Park this Saturday, September 16, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 17, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Guild is always glad to welcome back artists from previous festivals, and we’re also excited to have new artists who have not participated before.

A silent auction will be available from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day. Artists kindly donate items to the auction; the proceeds of which support youth programming like the Shakespeare and Violence Prevention program through the Colorado Shakespeare Festival for 4th – 9th grade students and scholarships for graduating high school seniors and Youth Theater participants.

Some familiar faces include ceramic artists, Daniel Marshall and John & Barb Burnett who do both functional and decorative ceramics, Lane Dukart with his ceramic architectural panels and ceramic bells or wind chimes, and Gina Sabaliauskas with her whimsical jewelry boxes and candle houses. New ceramic artists, Anastasia Thornton, Chris Burch, and Lee Wolf have functional and decorative pieces, and Byron Williamson has wonderfully whimsical sculptures. Bart

Walsh, new to us last year, returns with his ceramic wall art, and Megan Scroll will combine her black and white ceramics with black on white ink drawings.

Some may be familiar with the wonderful creations of jewelers, Anne Vogt, Michele Throne, Neil Herman, Sherry Jones, Mark Jimenez, and Candy McFall; this year, they have new pieces worth investigating. Sarah Ocasek, Peg Wolney and Ray Agenbroad all work with fused dichroic glass, but each uses the medium in a unique way. Several new jewelers this year offer exceptional pieces. Dawn Rasmussen combines silver and copper; Jackson Avila uses wood and aluminum; Busarin Kittichareonsup has wonderful silver and stone fish and robot pendants; Wendy Witchner incorporates antique buttons, and Susan Baile, who has been a participant in the past, knits and weaves silver, copper and brass wire.

A variety of wood products will be available from Rod Anderson’s whimsical jewelry boxes and puzzles, to Jim Beachler’s puzzle rocking chairs for kids and Gerald Brown’s rocking chairs for everyone else.

Gifted photographers will display work with a variety of subject matter. Fi Rust and Tim DePuydt specialize in animal and bird photographic art. Dan and Steve Sawuch, Roger Doak, Ken Smith, and Alex Burke offer exceptional landscapes.

Scott Wheeler produces color, black and white and sepia prints and Frank Baer, photographs color at night.

Tai Poon and his wonderful paintings on silk will be back at the festival this year, as will Barbara Cohen with her bright animal paintings and Bruce White with his landscape paintings. We welcome new artists Kristine Orr, Rudite Jaunarajs, Tiffany Maser and Mark Johnson, along with Conni Togel and her whimsical sheep paintings.

Metal artists Jim Swanson creates pewter leaves and Hill Brin and his artistic bird baths, mirrors and benches will be back. Mixed media participants also have fabulous things to share. Returning

will be Bear McLaughlin, Ginger Peterson with her wire and stone wrapped serving pieces, Wendy Sollod, polymer clay, Debi Letner and her stone lazy susans and stone oil candles and Brent Nilson and his beautifully crafted knives.

Returning after several years are Michele Scrivner with her enhanced paintings on wood, and Paul Peng and his bonsai.

New artists this year include Meg Harper, who uses paint to transform upcycled surfaces like corrugated tin and street signs into works of art, Natalie McGuire, who combines photography and mosaics, and Tanya Gerard who carves and decorates didgeridoos, and AB Word who presents beautiful drawings.

Valerie Szarek will be back with striking leather bags. Other leather artists, Lvonne Wilson, Chris Thompson, Heidi Viau and Jill Hubbard also present rich leather goods. The Gourd Gals, Lana Bojanski and Linda Bernett are back as is Kate McNutt with her upcycled rugs.

This is a great opportunity to start Christmas shopping. All of the artists noted above offer wonderful gift ideas including “self-gifts” for festival attendees.

Due to the popularity of its Summer Bingo program, American Legion Post 119 in Estes Park is adding Winter Bingo to its schedule of activities this year. Beginning next week, on September 19, Winter Bingo will be held at the American Legion Hall at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month through May. Legion Bingo is fun. Just ask Sandy Begley, winner of $1,466 two weeks ago in the 2017 Summer Bingo Progressive Jackpot. All are welcome to join the fun – you do not have to be a member or a veteran to play. Children are welcome to come and play, though the bingo packets must be purchased by someone age eighteen or older. There are nine games

per night, and cash prizes are awarded for every game. The size of the cash prize increases when more people play, so encourage your friends to join you!

The American Legion is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. Estes Park’s Post 119 was chartered in 1920 as the local branch of that national organization. It is located at 850 N. St. Vrain Avenue, at the corner of Highways 36 and 7. Veterans and their family members are encouraged to join and support this worthy organization.

Friday, September 15th, 7:00 p.m. -The Watoto Children’s Choir, a group of 18 orphans from Uganda, will begin its sixmonth U.S. tour in Estes Park, Colorado at the YMCA of the Rockies Ruesch Auditorium featuring a brand new concert, Signs & Wonders.

The concert will feature worship songs that share the stories of the children and the joy that they have because of God’s love. The children will share stories of how their lives have been changed and how they have been called into a life of purpose to transform their communities.

All performances are free and open to the public.

Since 1994, Watoto Children’s Choirs have traveled the world sharing the plight of Africa’s orphaned children. Each child in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both of their parents but they have been rescued and now live in a Watoto

village. Watoto is a holistic child-care solution initiated to serve the dire needs of the people of Africa.

Abandoned at a hospital in Kampala, Esther Kahangi was rescued by Watoto as a premature baby and spent her first weeks in critical care. Now, she is a healthy, joyful eight-year-old who has toured with the choir. “I am excited to be a part of Signs & Wonders,� said Esther. “I know that I am a wonder because I am chosen by God as His child.� “What an extraordinary experience it is to see the Watoto Children’s Choir,� said Brian Houston, Senior Pastor of Hillsong Church. “It lights up the place to see these beautiful kids, and when you hear their stories and learn about where they have come from, you can’t help but think of all God has done.�

Bob Ruesch Book Signing And Talk

Author, and former resident, Robert N. Ruesch will be his book, In The Warmth of the Shadow at Macdonald Book Shop from 1:00 to 3:00 on Saturday, September 23rd and also at Jellison Library at Estes Park Center YMCA in the morning at 10:00.

Robert was raised at YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park Center where he had the opportunity to interact with summer college staff at an early age. Growing up in a resort setting afforded the opportunity to learn life lessons in a unique way.

Robert holds a degree in Business Administration is certified as a Senior Director of the National YMCA, is a former EMT/Medic. He is also a published author with Christian devotions in several regional newspapers, including Welcome Home RGV the premier newspaper for the Rio Grande Valley in Texas also including being published in several national magazines.

Robert’s book is about growing up in a summer resort setting is not a bad way to observe and learn about life. From the beginning of the 1950s through partial college years, Robert was able to interact with summer staff, guests, conference attendees from across the United States and the world. These are the devotional stories, life lessons, the triumphs, tragedies and observations afforded a young boy becoming molded by living a life close to paradise in the Colorado Rockies.

Jasmine is a one year old tabby cat. She is very loving, gentle and sweet and really enjoys belly rubs.

Sweet Kemah is three years old, house trained, good with cats and loves to play with other dogs, however she is deaf.

She is a bit afraid of fast movements so a home without small children would be best. Kemah loves to run and enjoys a five mile trip around the lake every morning with her foster dad. She is kennel trained and is an “easy to love� kind of girl.

Kracker is a flame point Siamese mix.

He is about two years old. He is a big guy and very affectionate.

Vida is a gorgeous 10 month old pup who is house trained. She is friendly but might need a bit of work on her manners.

She is great with other dogs and has lived with kids.

Homer is three years old. He loves to meet new people, is good with other dogs and is manageable on a leash. He is a very sweet boy.

Loverboy is a four year old house trained Aussie mix. He is great on a leash and loves people.

Thank You From The American Legion To The Editor: One of my frequent reflections over the past year is that American Legion Post 119 belongs to the entire community of Estes Park. That fact has been underscored in recent weeks by the amazing outpouring of support for the renovation of our event hall. The event hall is used by individuals and organizations throughout the community for a variety of occasions from wedding receptions to HOA annual meetings, and in the coming winter it will be the new home of the Estes Park Repertory Theatre. After decades of use, however, the hall was clearly frayed and in need of some loving attention. Through the generosity of numerous donors of cash, time, and materials we have nearly completed the renova-

tion, and are planning an open house on October 14, 2017 to share our delight with the entire community! Watch for more details on this event.

Inspired By Mountains, History And Library’s Future By: Sarah Walsh, Development Director

This Thursday, we celebrate an essential group of people: the local library lovers who are our donors and our caring supporters.

Library Friends & Foundation memberships provide a margin of excellence that enables the library to be a community-builder, literacy center, and champion of youth.

And we celebrate a great author, adventurer and historian who also happens to be a resident of our community.

On September 21 at 5:30 p.m., the Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation is hosting its annual reception for all its members to gather together for a festive evening with wine and cheese—and a very brief nominating meeting—followed by a presentation from someone who has had a tremendous and varied career in the publishing world.

Our guest author and speaker is none other than Walter Borneman, who will be reflecting upon his many books and sharing the stories along the way in a presentation titled “Tales from the Road: Forty Years of Publishing. ” That forty-year career has taken Walt to some extraordinary mountain destinations—and into equally fascinating destinations of American history.

Around our state, Walt’s books have become invaluable guides to hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and everyone with an appreciation from Colorado’s natural wonders. He is the author of “A Climbing Guide to the Colorado Fourteeners”. In 2006, he earned the Colorado Book Award for the beautiful coffee table book, “14,000 Feet: a Celebration of Colorado’s Highest Mountains.” That book is filled with rare historic photos from the Colorado Mountain Club archives and breathtaking contemporary photos—including many of Longs Peak.

As a scholar and a historian, Walt’s writing pursuits have taken him far beyond the Fourteeners—across America and around the globe.

Walt is the author of the “New York Times” bestseller “The Admirals” about America’s war at sea during World War II, which was followed by the acclaimed “MacArthur at War.” His book “Rival Rails” tells the story of the construction of the transcontinental railroad.

Viewers of CSPAN’s Book TV saw Walt nationwide a few years back talking about his fascinating biography of

President James K. Polk, with Walt making the case that Polk forever transformed the U. S. presidency.

We, at 104.7FM KREV-LP in Estes Park, have been fortunate to have community support for our station. Our license was granted for a community station, not a religious station, as some have thought. We do provide religious programming on Sunday morning, focused on mainstream denominations. We play Christmas and other holiday music 24/7 from Advent through Epiphany. The rest of the year, the station plays easy listening, rock, classical, jazz, world music and some blues.

We focus on listeners from 35 yrs. – 90 yrs.; so there is an eclectic mix of music throughout the day. Public Service Announcements and short educational segments play throughout the day.

These shows reflect music from the 50s through the current day. We welcome music suggestions from our listeners, but please remember that the music has to be free of profanity and low on suggestive language. So, to the changes: 1. Most of the Big Band music will be featured on Saturday night 8 p.m. 11p.m. in the “Riverside Remembered” segments. There is also a Saturday show called, “Old Time Radio,” which will broadcast old radio shows and comparable music, including Barbershop.

2. Since the Baby Boomers are now senior citizens, their music will be more prominent.

3. We hope to expand the Jazz genre, both old and new, in our programming.

4. There is EP Spanish Radio, now from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday. After a short current events segment from Radio Bilingue, Latino music will play.

5. There will be an equal focus on local events and issues. The “Focus on Estes Park,” at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday, is just the beginning.

Our license has non-profit status; and at this point, all radio station work is done by volunteers. We cannot advertise, but we can receive (and welcome!) underwriters and donations, whose names and locations can be recognized, on air, as provided by our underwriter contracts listed on our web page. Rocky Mountain TEAM Pickleball Tournament Held In Estes Park By: Patty Bartlett nd

The 2 Annual Rocky Mountain TEAM Challenge Pickleball Tournament was held August 26th and 27th in Estes Park at the Stanley Park pickleball courts.

The Estes Park Recreation District graciously allowed the tournament to take place on the beautiful courts. 60 players took part, from three teams: Team 1 Northern Front Range, Team 2 - Denver and Team 3 - Estes Park. The Estes Park team sported players from Estes and Allenspark as well as a few visitors. The Estes team came in second with only an eight point difference from the first place

team, Northern Front Range. Both teams had over 800 points over the two day tournament. The tournament director was Orlie Carpio who along with his wife Susan, staged a fun tournament.

Estes team members included: Barb Kostohryz, Lee Kennicke, Jean Drury, Ruth Moser, Rob Lewis, Rick Moseley, Tom Kostohryz, Rene Moquin, Eric Waples, Greg Lavelle and Joe Osmann.

The tournament was divided by skill level, 3.5 players, then better players at the 4.0 skill level and higher skill level at 4.5.

News From The Golf Courses The past two weekends, both golf courses have been filled with lots of happy golfers, from visitors from around the country as well as our local golfers.

This past weekend it was a great privilege to host the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado’s two-day tournament. The tournament was one of the final stops of a very lengthy summer tour for kids eighteen or younger. 126 junior golfers enjoyed good weather and two great golf courses here in Estes Park. Local junior Megan Miller shot a two-day total of 165 to win the girl’s division age 14 to 18, and local Sam Hoover shot a two-day total of 173 to finish third place in the 14-15 year old boy’s division. Congratulations to all participants for a great weekend and thank you to the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado for making Estes Park a stop in their tour.

On Labor Day weekend, the 58th Annual Labor Day Tournament took place with outstanding course and weather conditions. 180 participants enjoyed the weekend for the three-day event. 140 of them traveled from as close as Loveland and as far away as Maine. The Men’s Championship came to an exciting conclusion as Longmont’s Dylan Wonnacott shot a 65 the final day for a 204 three-day total, beating Jeff Slupe from Fort Collins by three strokes. In the Women’s Championship, Broomfield’s Jacquie Fankell had a two-day total of 161 to win the championship by eight strokes. Local Zach Eitzen won the 1st flight with a three total of 211. In the fifth flight, local Jim Bangs won with a 238 three-day total, and local Virgil Yarbrough enjoyed a seven stroke victory in the tee it forward flight. The tournament was a huge success thanks in big part to the golf course maintenance staff. The course conditions were the talk of the weekend, our visitors and locals really were treated to a pleasant experience.

The 9-hole course closes for the elk rut this Sunday, September 17th. All 9-hole passes are valid at the 18-hole course

during this break. We intend to reopen the course November 1st for the winter golf season. The 18-hole course will close on November 1st and will reopen April 2018. We still encourage making tee times for the remainder of the golf season. With any luck, we might experience an Indian summer that will keep the course green and busy!

With the closing of the 9-hole, I need to thank the people that make the golf experience there very enjoyable! First of all, Greg Anderson and his maintenance crew have done an incredible job keeping that course in great shape! As for the golf staff, Rich Babcock and his pro shop staff, Carol Prince, Bob Shuler, Bill Shotts and Tandy Brown used their professionalism and hard work to display a very friendly and welcoming environment.

Jim Tierney, Frank Zambrano, Larry Miller, Tony Ortega, and Harry Whalen did a great job handling the ranger and cart duties. They have the difficult task of assisting the golfers through geese, elk, and elk watchers while controlling the play of a busy golf course and taking care of the new fleet of carts. I admire the entire staff ’s hard work and really appreciate their effort.

With another successful Junior Golf program behind us now, it is once again time to focus on the fund raising for next summer. The 23rd Annual Golf Marathon will take place on October 17th at the 18hole golf course. Austin Logan, Skip Peck, Tim Hull, Brad Doggett, and myself will tee off at first light and will play until dark to raise money for the juniors.

An estimated six to seven rounds will be played by each of us with the hope to maximize the pledges that have been made. Last year we raised more than $2,500 thanks to so many in this community. Janet Ludlum The Good Shepherd recognized a sheep of His own flock and welcomed her into his arms when Estes Park resident Jan Ludlum, died at Medical Center of the Rockies on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. She was 88 years old. Janet Louise Willcox was born February 3, 1929 in Columbus, OH. Her parents were Russell S. and Thelma E. (Highley) Willcox. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Administration at Ohio State University.

She was a librarian at Ohio State; University City Library in Missouri and the Kent Free Library in Kent, OH. On September 17, 1949, she married Robert E. Ludlum in Columbus, OH. The couple lived in Ohio: Columbus, Springfield, Galipolis & Kent; in University City, Missouri and in Cheshire, Connecticut.

In 1994, they moved to Estes Park, CO where they were involved in their church and community. Jan was a member of Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, serving on the boards of Deacons and Presbyterian Women. She was a volunteer at Rocky Mountain National Park as a Visitor’s Center information agent and in the

July 5, 1926 – September 9, 2017 Dale Vrabec was a remarkable man with wide-ranging interests and many devoted friends. His ability to connect on a deeply personal level with whomever he met was an extraordinary gift.

Dale was born in Japan on July 5, 1926. After some time overseas, Dale and his mother, Setti Line Vrabec, returned to the United States in April of 1933, sailing into San Francisco while the Golden Gate Bridge was under construction.

Dale grew up in Ojai, California, where he pursued his interest in astronomy. He built his own high-resolution solar spectroscope at 11 years of age. He was a “techie” even then.

Dale continued his formal education at Caltech in Pasadena, CA, where he received degrees in Astronomy and Astrophysics. During World War II, all Caltech campus housing was being used for the military, so Dale was forced to find off-campus housing. Responding to an ad in the paper, he knocked on the door at 560 S. Allen Ave. in Pasadena. When a pretty high school girl named Sylvia Barbour opened the door, Dale fell head over heels in love with her– “love at first sight” as he always said. He loved Sylvia with a devotion that most people can only dream of ̶ something to which all of Dale’s friends can attest.

Dale never really recovered from Sylvia’s passing on March 8, 2014.

Dale’s lengthy career at The Aerospace Corporation included designing and building a state-of-the-art solar telescope in the San Fernando Valley, CA, being on a crew launching rockets from Cape Canaveral in Florida, and designing highly classified surveillance instruments for the Air Force.

Dale was passionate about Nepal and the Nepalese people. He went on five extensive trekking adventures in the Himalayas ̶ trekking to both the Nepalese and Tibetan sides of Everest and Makalu.

When Dale retired from The Aerospace Corporation in 1988, he and Sylvia moved to Estes Park, Colorado.

Without the demands of a 60hour work week, Dale was free to pursue his wideranging interests, including solar astronomy, music, astrophysics, Florentine art, Himalayan mountaineering, and anything having to do with airplanes, rockets and satellites. He loved Google Earth, and spent hours viewing his beloved Himalayas. He delighted in sharing his music, his “heart Language,” with his friends, often inviting them over for an evening of music played on his high-end audiophile sound system. In his later years, Dale lived for time with his friends; people energized him. He got excited every time he made another “amazing connection” with a new person. He never knew a stranger. As so many people in Estes Park can testify, the ability he had to connect with people was an irresistible force.

In the last week of his extraordinary life, Dale told his friends, “My life has been utterly fulfilled. I have been privileged to meet so many amazing people.”

Dale leaves behind a daughter, Kathryn Lewis, and son-in-law, Jim Lewis, of Lakewood, Colorado; four grandchildren (Christopher Haven, Sarah Levine, Katie Pernosky and Tabitha Barbour), and seven great grandchildren. Dale will be greatly missed by his family and his devoted friends from around the world.

A celebration of Dale’s life will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Bible Fellowship Church, 1575 South Saint Vrain Ave., Estes Park, Colorado 80517.

Friday Night Lights The 2017 version of Friday Night Lights came to Estes Park September 1, but the result wasn’t what Bobcat fans wanted.

The game was delayed for a short time with seven minutes left in the first half when the Friday Night Lights failed to come on as the sun went down.

The visiting Middle Park Panthers, expected to be a tough team, lived up to their reputation with a 60-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrim-

mage. The Bobcats showed flashes of brilliance but couldn’t keep up with the mostly bigger Panthers.

Middle Park made two TDs in each of the first there quarters to take a 42-0 lead into the fourth period. With a running clock, the Bobcats came alive to score on a 30-yard pass with six minutes left in the game. A run for the two-point conversion and the final 42-8 score.

Employment Fundraising To Support Estes Park Student Nears $20,000 Fundraising dinner this Friday, September 15th at Estes Park Middle School Donations to support the family of Darrel Guadarrama Ramos, the thirteen year old Estes Park middle school student who recently received a liver and kidney transplant, are getting closer to the goal of $30,000. As of this writing, $19,275 has been raised – almost 2/3 of the way!

Darrel is currently out of the hospital in Aurora and is now staying near the hospital for the next few weeks. The good news is that he is doing well. His mother, Minerva, is so very grateful for the wonderful generosity of the Estes Park community.

The many friends of Darrel and his family have scheduled a fundraising dinner in honor of Darrel to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. The dinner is scheduled for Friday, September 15th at the Estes Park Middle School and will be catered free of charge by local Mexican restaurants from 5:30-7:00 p.m. DJ music will be provided until 8:00 p.m. for listening and dancing. Donations to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) in honor of Darrel will be accepted at the door.
