Elk Viewing Is Best From A Safe Distance

Each September and October, thousands of visitors are drawn to Estes Park to watch herds of elk gather in the valley for their mating season, or “rut.” With this popular activity comes the responsibility for everyone to be safe and respect these majestic animals. During the rut, the male “bull” elk are irritable, aggressive and extremely dangerous to onlookers who get too close.

“Every day our Estes Park Emergency Communications Center receives numerous calls for police officers or police auxiliary to respond to elk issues around Town, and the vast majority of issues are caused by people,” commented Estes Park Police Chief Wes Kufeld. He explained that the most common reports to dispatch are people getting too close to the elk and “elk jams,” caused when drivers park their vehicles in the way of traffic in order to watch the elk. Kufeld continued, “Safety should be first on the

The same tips should be considered each spring when calving season takes place. During this time, female elk, or cows, become irritable and highly protective of their young calves. Though they may look harmless, like the bull elk during the rut, cows are extremely dangerous during calving season. The Estes Park Police Department and the Police Auxiliary periodically assist with wildlife education and may provide “safe viewing” tip cards when they are on the scene of a wildlife viewing opportunity.

Town Begins Winterizing Parks And Landscaped Areas Sept. 28 The Town of Estes Park's Public Works staff will begin the annual winterization of all Town-owned parks and landscaped areas the week of Sept. 28. This includes aerating turf, dividing and pruning

perennials, blowing out irrigation systems, pulling and turning annual beds and pruning trees and their branches to clear the way for snow plows. Staff will begin with the outlying parks and work

into the downtown area. Weather permitting, the work is estimated to be complete by Nov. 1, 2016.

Free Residential Slash Collection Dates Announced To help you prepare for the coming wildfire season, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District is hosting two slash drop-off events. From 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on October 22nd and 23rd, property owners within the fire district are encouraged to bring slash to the Town of Estes Park property located at 640 Elm Road. The site entrance is on the right-side of Elm Road, just past the turn off to the Waste Management Transfer Station.

The Estes Park Startup Meetup group is a growing group of startup entrepreneurs in Estes Park looking to inspire and help others through the creation of a dense network. On September 14 at 7:11 a.m. police were called to the 200 block of Cleave Street on a report of an unsecured dumpster. Upon arrival police issued a citation to a 40-year-old male from Lafayette, CO for a violation of the wildlife protection ordinance.

On September 14 at 6:48 a.m. police were called to two unsecured dumpsters with trash strewn about in the 1500 block of Fish Hatchery Road. A citation was issued for a violation of the wildlife protection ordinance.

On September 15 at 2:33 p.m. police observed the driver of a vehicle at Moraine Ave. and Elm Road who failed to use a turn signal. Upon further investigation, the 23-year-old female driver from Estes Park was found to be driving

under the influence of alcohol with a BrAC of .111. She was charged with DUI, DUI per se, failure to signal a turn and weaving and later released to a responsible person.

On September 15 at 8:17 a.m. police discovered three unsecured dumpsters in the 400 block of W. Elkhorn Ave. and the business owner was issued a citation for a violation of the wildlife protection ordinance.

On September 16 at 9:32 a.m. police received a report of a theft from a customer of a retail business in the 300 block of E. Elkhorn Ave. The 60 year old female business owner was issued a summons for theft.

National Philanthropy Day in Estes Park is a community wide event that celebrates the wonderful giving nature of our community. Philanthropy comes in all forms, donating money to charitable causes, volunteering time assisting one of the over 100 nonprofits in the valley, or sharing a special talent that can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center is proud to organize this community-wide event sponsored at held at the YMCA of the Rockies on Thursday, November 10 from 4 – 7 p.m.

A big part of the evening is to recognize those who have made an impact during the past year. We are currently seeking nominations in four award categories: Youth Philanthropist of the Year, Business Philanthropist of the Year, Enduring Service and Individual Philanthropist of the Year. The individual philanthropist of the year is the most nominated category as there are so many who truly enrich Estes with their giving hearts! Last year’s award nominees and previous year’s recipients were an inspiration to us all. Previous recipients include Sherry Davis, Kathy Littlejohn, Don Widrig, and Peggy & John Lynch.

This week we will highlight the 2015 “Katie Speer” Individual Philanthropist of the Year Award recipient, Judi Cunningham.

The impact of Judi’s service is deep, and it’s also quite broad. She has been involved with Newcomer’s, the Woman’s Club, The Estes Valley Library Friends and Foundation, PEO, is an Ambassador

Judi supports many organizations with her own volunteering and financial support, but her greatest asset is the ability to recruit others in support of charitable endeavors.

Jordan and I celebrated our third year of marriage last week. As I write this, I’m on the couch, scribbling into my notebook that’s perched precariously on top of a pile of just-paid bills. I cooked dinner about an hour ago, Jordan cleaned up, and we’re all hanging in the family room, watching Monday Night Football while Harley chews her new bone. It’s safe to say we’ve settled nicely into our “old married couple” routine – and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Three years in, though, and I feel like I have learned at least a few things about building a marriage: • It takes work. I felt cliché just writing it, but it’s true! Marriage is such an exercise in self-realization and self-actualization – it forces you to come to terms with behaviors and ideologies that could fly when it was “me, myself, and I” and no one was calling you on your…stuff. I love having a partner who challenges me to be better, and becoming better takes some serious compromise and work.

• Playing card and board games has gotten a whole lot more difficult. I tend to get cocky now that Jordan and I have been together for a while, so I think I know what his plots and plans are in every hand. Wrong! After the first year or two, I’d know exactly what was going on but now, now we’ve both learned how to work around each other’s strategies. It’s maddening. However, we’ll still kick anyone’s butt in Taboo.

• Your own time is important! When we were first dating, we spent a lot of hours

and activities together, which was wonderful and needed for two people getting to know each other. As we’ve grown in our relationship we’ve also grown to realize that having some of our own interests and a little bit of our own time is healthy.

• Choosing somewhere to eat is the worst. We have had our share of “discussions” (we are two passionate, vocal people, after all) but there’s nothing like the conversation of where we should go for lunch. For being those two opinionated people, why can’t one of us just pick a restaurant?!

• It’s okay to go to bed angry. Sometimes a good night’s sleep is the best way to get (or be given) perspective.

• In our case, if you can make it through the wedding, you can make it through a lot. Just sayin’.

• Marriage is perhaps not for everyone – I have a few friends who are not interested in legally wedding their partner. I personally believe that however you want to live your life – committed to someone, not committed to someone, married to someone, single forever, whatever – is your choice and I’ll celebrate you however you decide. But for us, marriage is really fun. And really good. And definitely the best decision we’ve ever made.

During the weekend we learned that Aunt Rita hides her chocolate in the freezer.

Uncle Mike would never find it there since his cooking prowess goes no farther than stirring whatever is on the stove as he walks by. He doesn’t stir anything in the freezer, so that’s where her Milky Ways reside. Surveys indicate that most women hide chocolate. Truly. Inside toilet paper rolls, wrapped in foil and put in the freezer marked “spoiled meat,” in an empty prunes package, in the medicine cabinet (chocolate is medicine, after all), and in the piano bench.

This peculiar female-only behavior occurs for a variety of reasons: • Some women hide chocolate as a means of personal indulgence. There’s nothing quite like a private moment spent in the laundry room with the door closed, savoring a bite of quality chocolate all alone. We deserve it.

• Others put the household chocolate out of reach for practical purposes. This one applied to me when there was a youngster in the house. I had a mental record of my chocolate chip inventory, kept in the red and white striped tin on the third shelf in the pantry, so when I wanted to add the chips to my cookie dough and I opened to tin only to find the supply had been raided, I exhibited symptoms akin to chocolate withdrawal.

Over the years I had to hide that tin in several different locations. It was like Easter year ‘round. I hid it. It got found. I hid it somewhere else. It got found. Finally I hid it so well even I couldn’t find it, so I had to go out and buy more chocolate chips anyway.

My dad (Denis-with-one-n; he calls himself “Dinny”) is 87 and Rita, the youngest of six, is a few years his junior. They grew up in Pocahontas, Iowa, a little town with a population of maybe 1,750. Rita thinks Dinny is as funny as a guzinta joke (“a guy guzinta a bar…”).

Dad’s offspring grow weary of his humor (watching him wipe his armpit with his napkin after dinner is funny only so many times), so when Dinny gets a new audience, his wit shifts into overdrive. Get Dinny and Rita talking—about anything—and you’re in for some guffaws.

Last weekend my Chicago girl cousins came to visit, bringing Aunt Rita along to chaperone. Now, I have never been one to laugh so hard I fall off my chair or roll on the floor (does anyone really do that?). But if I were that type, I would have been doing both all weekend, right along with the girl cousins. My dad and Aunt Rita were a spontaneous sitcom. Here’s an example (FYI: Betty was their oldest sister, a gourmet cook): Dad: I sure miss Betty. (Pause.) She taught me how to devein shrimp. (Pause.) I was thrilled. (Dad deveining shrimp is as likely as Dad tying flies. It ain’t gonna happen.)

Rita: I miss her too. (Silence while the siblings recall their sister and her cooking skills.)

Dad: We had a shrimp in Pocahontas once. (See, my dad’s humor is on the quirky side.)

Rita: I know. I dated him. (Girl cousins burst out laughing here. But she was serious.) Shrimp Shelgren.

The “Blue Mist” story is based on a real person from Estes Park’s past.

Miner Bill And The Blue Mist: Remembering An Estes Park Legend Bizarre three-toed claw-marks etched on trees. A reclusive mountain miner. A strange blue haze creeping from among the other clouds. These are few of the elements of what is perhaps this valley’s most famous fireside legend.

Storyteller Kurtis Kelly will perform a special re-telling of “The Legend of the Blue Mist” in a campfire setting on Saturday, October 1 at 2:00 pm. The program will take place at the picnic grounds behind the Historic Fall River Hydroplant on Fish Hatchery Road, and the event is sponsored by the Estes Park Museum. Cost is $5 for Museum Members and children or $7 for non-members. No reservations are necessary; admission can be paid for in cash or check on the day of the program.

Since the story was first told in the 1940s, thousands of Estes Park area visitors have been intrigued and entertained by “The Blue Mist” at campfire gatherings, often at places like the Fall River Lodge, Steads Ranch, and at the livery of the YMCA of the Rockies. It was local cowboy-wrangler Bill Robinson who created the legend, utilizing the central character of William “Miner Bill” Currence (ca.

1868-1951), a real-life figure from the area’s history. Today, many remember Robinson as a master storyteller—some were there to hear him tell the story firsthand. While Robinson created “The Blue Mist” as a fictional tale, it is framed with references to local history as well as allusions to the natural, yet strangely sudden, weather phenomena that occur near mountain valleys and ridges.

Joining Kelly for “The Blue Mist” program is local musician and songwriter Steve Smersh. Interspersed within the

narrative of the story, Smersh will perform his original song trilogy, inspired by the legend of “Miner Bill.” Especially suited to the campfire setting, the music interludes will feature the songs “Top of the Canyon,” “Miner Bill’s Cabin,” and “The Boat that We Row.” Smersh will reflect on the legend that became the inspiration for his trilogy.

Kurtis Kelly is a local performer wellknown for his many re-enactments of such local legends as Enos Mills and F.O. Stanley. Steve Smersh is a popular musician with longtime ties to the Estes Park area. His original song “Colorado Might” became a hometown anthem after the floods of 2013.

The public is encouraged to attend this special program.

Attendees should plan to bring jackets or rain gear to prepare for any weather changes during the outdoor event. Marshmallows for roasting by the fire will be provided. Parking is available behind the picnic shelter, signage will guide drivers. For those who may have difficulty walking down a hill to the picnic area, some parking is available in the lot by the Hydroplant, located at 1754 Fish Hatchery Road.

Located at 200 Fourth Street, the Estes Park Museum galleries are open through October 31 on Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. The mission of the Estes Park Museum is to conduct activities that preserve, share and respect the unique history of Estes Park. Estes Park Museum Unveils Its Plans For New Collections And Research Facility Last weekend there was a special party in the Stanley Concert Hall to reveal the plans of the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc. to raise money to build a new Collections and Research Facility (estimated to cost $2 million) on the Estes Park Museum property at 200 Fourth Street.

With over 35,000 artifacts representing the local history under the Museum’s care, adequate space has run out to keep the valuable resources in a safe, climatecontrolled, and accessible space. The new facility would solve this problem as well as provide a library for researchers and a processing area for new acquisitions to be evaluated and cataloged.

Anyone who lives in Estes Park or who has visited Estes Park will benefit from this new addition to the Museum.

At the fundraising kick-off attended by more than 100 individuals, there was a brief program highlighting the philanthropy of F.O. Stanley by Historian Laureate Jim Pickering as well as the unveiling of the plans for the new building by Museum Director Derek Fortini.

Fundraising was initiated by an auction including Lyman Byxbe artwork conducted by O.J. Pratt of Pacific Auction in Longmont and through the sales of custom paver stones that will be installed in the walkway of the new facility. The afternoon was concluded with a perform-

As I looked out on the beautiful Monday morn, I noticed that the mountains are turning that beautiful gold that we enjoy every autumn. I look forward to a trip on Highway 7 towards Nederland and then on to Central City to take in the wonder of our golden aspen. Where did the summer go?

Well, a lot of it was taken up with walking and playing with Sunshine. She is still such a puppy, a very big puppy. At last count, she has destroyed four beds. Now the ones I have in the kitchen and the basement she leaves alone, in fact, she likes to sleep on them. The four that I have tried to place in her crate are the ones she has destroyed.

Guess what? She will no longer get one in her crate! I am slow to learn but when I do, I get the point. No remarks, please!

Getting back to our autumn gold brings up the idea that it will soon be soup time. I recently attended the Scottish Festival with friends from New Orleans and was fortunate to sit in on a cooking session with a Gaelic chef. His leek and potato soup was scrumptious. I had my friend email me his recipe that I am most anxious to try. I will certainly share my version of it with you when I have fixed it. Meanwhile, I think we should take advantage of the last of our wonderful corn.

The following recipe does just that.

Chicken Corn Soup 10 servings- about 3 quarts Whole chicken, cut in pieces and cooked * (remove and cube after cooking) Chicken stock (from cooked chicken) Water as needed (stock and water to equal 10 cups.)

1-3 chicken bouillon cubes (probably one is enough, taste.)

1 cup chopped onion 1 cup celery, chopped 1 cup shredded carrots Corn from two ears, cut from cob (or 1 can of corn kernels or equivalent frozen corn.)

2 cans of cream corn 2 cups uncooked egg noodles ¼ cup butter plus 1 Tbs. Salt and pepper to taste Cook chicken in a large stockpot with water to cover with an onion, 2 stalks of celery and about 2-3 whole carrots and 1 Tbs. salt. When tender, remove from liquid and cool enough to remove from bone and cut into bite-size pieces. Strain and measure broth, throw away solids.

In a large Dutch oven sauté’ onions, celery, fresh corn and carrots in one Tbs. of butter till translucent. Place the sautéed vegetables, along with the canned cream corn, into the broth with water needed to measure 10 cups of liquid. Bring to a boil and add noodles, butter and salt and pepper. Cook about 10 minutes, stir a bit so noodles do not stick to bottom of the pot.

Taste for adjustments of seasonings, you may want 2-3 bouillon cubes but I doubt it.

If you wish to thicken the soup, you can mix 3 Tbs. cornstarch with some of the liquid that is cooled and add to soup and cook a while longer. To give the soup a golden hue you can also add a bit of turmeric or one or two strings of saffron.

It’s up to you!

You may also use only two pounds of chicken breast and skip the cooking of the whole chicken but the taste from the bones gives it such a body of flavor. If you do that you will have to use canned chicken broth and I suggest using only broth not water.

You will definitely need two or more bouillon cubes with this method.

Since it such a beautiful fall day, I think I will take a walk with Sunshine.

The couple is originally from Mundelein, Illinois where they met in high school and instantly became best friends and high school sweethearts.

They have been blessed with three wonderful sons, three beautiful daughters in law, eight awesome grandchildren and

five adorable great-grandchildren, with number six arriving in March of 2017.

Howard and Catherine attribute reaching fifty years of marriage to their faith in God and the love and support of family and many dear friends.

The couple will be celebrating this special occasion on a Caribbean cruise.

Vintage, Modern Or In-Between: Table Setting Registrations Due October 15

Within the archives of the Estes Park Museum is a collection of tableware emblematic of the early hotel and lodging experience of the area. Museum staff and volunteers recently showcased serving items from the personal collection of F.O. and Flora Stanley. The plates, cups, saucers, and dishes are notable for their distinctive “S� insignia on each piece.

Displaying and arranging these vintage items was part of the prelude to the firstever Creative Colorado Table Settings competition, a new fundraiser to support the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation.

Whether the inspiration is historic or contemporary—formal or informal, the public is encouraged to tap into their creativity and participate this October by dusting off their ‘special occasion’ tableware pieces and imagining a design to showcase these items. Those planning to enter should submit their registration form no later than Saturday, October 15.

Registration forms are available at the Estes Park Museum or by visiting http://estesparkmuseumfriends.org/creative-colorado-tablescapes/ The grand-prize winner will receive a personal meal for two prepared and served by the Lodge at the Stanley Hotel.

The competition will take place over the weekend of October 21-23. Participants will set up their tables on Friday, October 21, and a panel of local judges will select the winners that evening. The public will

be able to view the full array of tables on Saturday and Sunday of that weekend.

The event takes place at the Willome Building at the YMCA of the Rockies.

The event is open to adults and children alike, with separate prizes for younger ages. Businesses and civic groups are also encouraged to enter.

The table setting theme is “High Country Celebrations: Past and Present.� This offers a wide spectrum of possibilities— be it vintage or modern, casual or fancy.

No cooking or preparation of food is required. Instead, participants should create an imaginary food menu to accompany their settings.

This event marks the first such competition in Estes Park, inspired by similar table-setting competitions that have proven popular around the country. So unpack great-grandmother Sophie’s wedding china, or your mother’s fiesta ware, and use it in designing your own celebratory table.

September “Explore Our Store” Showcases Images Of RMNP And Moon Kats Tea Shoppe By: Kirby Hazelton

“Explore Our Store” continued in September with wonderful visits to Images of RMNP and Moon Kats Tea Shoppe.

Representatives from the Ambassadors and Visitor Center staff, Estes Valley Partners for Commerce, Downtown Business Partners, Estes Area Lodging Association, and the Town Board of Trustees enjoyed checking out each shop’s offerings and hearing great presentations from the respective owners.

To start off this month’s visits, owner Erik Stensland welcomed the group to his photography gallery, Images of RMNP, located at 203 Park Lane. In April of next year, Erik will celebrate 10 years of business in Estes Park, and the group learned about what a journey it was for him and his family to get here! In their “former lives,” Erik and his wife lived overseas working in the fields of ecotourism and humanitarianism. They even started their own refugee agency which was the largest in Kosovo after the war. After many years, Erik knew he was burning out. He asked himself, “What restores me?” and his answer was going for a walk in the mountains. The Stenslands moved to Allenspark to stay with a friend and soon thereafter, Erik considered a career as a full-time, professional photographer. Knowing very little about photography, Erik spent hours in the library, pouring over books about art, then going into the forest with a point-and-shoot camera, practicing shots and asking photographer friends to critique the results.

After his first year, Erik began selling his photos; after 18 months, he began showing at art shows; and after three years, he opened with gallery with only one

month’s rent in the bank. The rest is history! Erik shared that his focus is creating emotional connections through his photography with those who are visiting and those who love Rocky Mountain National Park. Guests can purchase a variety of mediums, including new, hi-tech

Tea Shoppe, located at 205 Park Lane.

Owners Rob and Staci Leavitt set up a beautiful spread of pastries and three kinds of tea for everyone to enjoy, and as the group was snacking, Rob shared a bit about their history. Moon Kats started in Englewood in September of 2011 after Rob semi-retired from his career as an executive chef. Rob joked that Moon Kats started just for Hansel and Gretel, their two cats, who are the “real bosses” of the operation. In August of 2014, Rob and Staci made the move to Estes Park in order to be closer to their parents in Glen Haven, and thankfully for us here in Estes Park, brought the shop with him.

Moon Kats is now housed in the restored Old Prospect Inn and Rob shared many interesting details about the history of the building, including that the hardwood floors in the tea shop are original!

Everything at Moon Kats is made from scratch, in-house, with Staci focusing on the sweets (including cupcakes, breads, cheesecake, cookie bars, “kitty kat bars” [“Kit Kat in cookie form”], cream puffs, éclairs, petit fours…) and Rob taking care of the soups and savories. Their overall goal is “365 days of smiles” by serving fresh and delicious food to locals and visitors alike. Traditional Sunday brunch is served from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and includes eggs benedict, waffles, granola, crepes, and more. Moon Kats is usually closed on Mondays, and open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Check out their Facebook page for information about daily specials!

Great Governing Boards: Advocating For Resources In The Community Nathan Miles 12th Grade Congratulations to Nathan Miles, the Student of the Week for September 23, 2016.

In school Nathan enjoys football, basketball, baseball and being a member of the Environmental Club. He is proud of the fact that he has never failed a class.

Outside of school he loves dirt biking, camping, traveling and hiking.

Nathan’s favorite quote is “The time is always right to do what is right” by Martin Luther King, Jr. He has liked and followed this quote for awhile because it always reminds him to do the right thing for himself, no matter whatever he is doing.

After high school Nathan plans to attend college in Colorado or travel the country.

A Workshop for Nonprofit Boards and Staff A solid foundation for your organization is imperative and it all starts with the governing board. The Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center is pleased to announce that The Great Governing Boards Series, presented by Mark Holdt, Mountain Sage Consulting, in partnership with the Colorado Nonprofit Association is coming to Estes Park. The second session, Advocating for Resources in the Community will be held on Wednesday, September 28 from 2-4 p.m. at the Estes Valley Library.

Great governing boards serve as enthusiastic advocates for resources in the community. Every year, nonprofit leaders rank their governing boards as weakest in the area of fundraising relative to all other skills. There are three primary reasons why boards don't want to engage in fundraising and we will explore each reason and provide solutions.

“WHAT’S YOUR ‘MULLIGAN’?”

That was the strange question posed to me recently. I was reading a book entitled Running with the Horses and a man asked me what it was about. It was the second time that question was asked that morning. Another asked if it was a book about raising horses. I explained that it was based on a comment God made to Jeremiah in the Old Testament. He nodded and went to get his order. The second man, however, thought he knew what it was saying. He asked if I was a minister and, upon learning that I was and for how long, he explained that he served as minister for a church in Wisconsin. Then he asked that strange question: “What is your mulligan?” Having played golf I knew that a ‘mulligan’ was a ‘do-over’ shot that one could take when his first attempt went awry. He went on to explain, “Most of us have something in our lives that we would ‘do-over’ if we had the chance. What would you ‘do-over’ in your ministry if you had the chance?”

I quickly scanned my life. Would I do my education differently? I got my degree at a downtown Los Angeles University, while working a late shift at a bank in the ‘skid row’ area of LA to make that possible…during the Watts riots. No ‘do-over’ there. Blessed I was by that experience. How about working with churches, large and small, in large and small areas like Phoenix, LA, Nebraska and Colorado for sixty years? No desire for a ‘mulligan’ in any of those enriching and rewarding experiences. In my 50+ year marriage to my wonderful wife, and raising four successful and influential children and families? No ‘do-overs’ there. After that quick review, my answer was immediate. “No ‘mulligans’ wanted!” We both talked about the joy that we’ve had in serving where we’ve been and blessings we experience. As he walked away, I was grateful for his searching question.

As I’ve thought about his question, I know why no ‘mulligans’ are needed. It boils down to making the most of every opportunity in every area in which one lives. I didn’t like LA traffic…but I learned to drive like the locals did. I didn’t really care for the heat of Phoenix, or humidity of Nebraska, but adapted to those conditions. I prefer certain sizes and types of churches, but have been blessed to serve successfully in all kinds. As a result, I wouldn’t, for a moment, ask to have any of that changed. To me, it’s like a spirit shared by a song writer who wrote: “Brighten the corner where you are!” She was in a situation…‘stuck with’ caring for an invalid parent…instead of getting to fulfil a lifelong dream of hers. She had assumed that God wanted her for some ‘bigger’ role. However, for her, the ‘ah-ha’ moment was when she realized that God wanted her to ‘bloom where she was planted’ and set about to be the great care-giver that God intended her to be.

What about you? If someone asked you the question I was asked, what would be your response? Would it be one of these? I would have married another person. I would have raised my children differently…or opted to have no children at all. I would never have taken the job that ‘I am stuck with’. I would be living in … rather than where I do.

Such discontent and second-guessing simply makes for unhappiness and a lack of fulfillment. I trust that you are ‘Brightening the corner…Estes Park…where you are’, with no regrets or desire for a ‘mulligan’ to make your life better and more fulfilling. Bob

We’re truly sorry that we had to cancel the spring FreeCycleEstes due to bad weather, but we’re crossing our fingers for Saturday, October 8th. Hopefully nothing will stand in the way of our Fall 2016 FreeCycleEstes, which will take place in the portastall near the grandstands at the Estes Park Fairgrounds. Just look for our signs. There will be plenty of parking at that end of the fairgrounds, and drop-off and pick-up should be easy at this location.

For those who have never heard of a FreeCycle, it’s a free garage sale. People bring all sorts of perfectly usable items that they no longer have a use for, and folks who need and can reuse the donated items take them away.

Drop-offs must occur from 8-10:30 a.m.

Free shopping is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

No one wants to throw away food – especially freshly-prepared high-quality meals. But the obstacles are formidable.

The essential need to ensure food safety and comply with all applicable health regulations, plus the logistics of storage, packaging, transportation, and distribution, complicate even the most noble intentions.

Rocky Mountain Conservancy Celebrates Conservation Corps

As we get ready to enjoy National Public Lands Day on September 24th in Rocky Mountain National Park and surrounding public lands, Rocky Mountain Conservancy looks to celebrate the successes of its Conservation Corps program from the past season.

In 2016, the Conservancy welcomed thirty-six youth, ages 18-25, into its Conservation Corps program for a summer of environmental stewardship work, career development, and educational trainings. For eight weeks these young people were spread throughout Northern Colorado on six different crews completing conservation projects in Rocky Mountain National Park and the Arapaho-Roo-

sevelt National Forests. Intermixed throughout these weeks in the field, the youth participated in three weeks of leadership training, environmental education, and

USFS in areas north of Rocky along with Cache le Poudre River, around Red Feather Lakes, and throughout the Rawah Wilderness. In this region, the Corps helped rebuild flood damaged trails, maintain over 80 miles of remote trail systems, and restore areas affected by trail braiding and illegal camping.

On the southern border of Rocky Mountain National Park, two crews com-

career development programming to help further each individual’s personal, professional, and academic goals.

In Rocky Mountain National Park, crews worked to protect trails, restore wildlife habitat, and preserve cultural resources. This included maintaining over 100 miles of trail, planting over 8,000 native plant species, restoring three historic buildings, and improving accessibility.

Outside of Rocky Mountain National Park, four crews worked in the surrounding Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forests.

Two of these crews worked with the

pleted extensive project work with the USFS to improve recreational access and protect ecosystems along trail corridors.

This work included constructing bridges

and turnpike sand clarifying trail corridor by removing downed trees in and around the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area on both sides of the continental divide.

All of this work amounted to 11,520 hours of volunteer labor contributed to the National Park Service and USDA Forest Service, providing the equivalent of $270,000 in support to the agencies.

Alongside this support, the Conservation Corps worked to develop the next generation of conservationists and promote individual growth.

This project will help students (ages 5-17) to develop essential skills of evaluating and decision making in the political arena.

And the results will be published in the local newspapers and other entities that cover the Election results.

Home Schooled students will vote at the Estes Valley Library. Primary grades will vote only for President/Vice President.

Middle schoolers will vote for national positions (President/Vice President, US Senate, and US House) and register their thoughts on the Tobacco Tax proposal.

High school students will consider the

entire ballot.

All students are invited to attend the League of Women Voters Forums with their families: Sept. 22 (Colorado State Representative), Sept. 29 (Issues on the State Ballot), Oct. 6 (Colorado Cares amendment), and Oct. 20 (County Commissioners and county issues). We will be accepting questions from students so come prepared to ask. For families unable to attend, forum recordings will be available after the event.

Friday Niters Announce Dance Lessons Long before the concept of “Dancing With the Stars” was conceived, several Estes Park couples joined together to create a social dance club. The Friday Niters Dance Club will begin its 41st season on October 14th at The Rodeway Inn, featuring the marvelous music of Estes Park’s own Kings of Swing. The club meets the second Friday of the month, October through May, to enjoy big-band era music performed by live bands. A special New Year’s Dinner Dance takes the place of the December and January dances. The membership includes dancers of all ability levels and dress is business casual. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m. with dancing from 7:00 to 10:00.

The Club is seeking new members and is offering memberships at the fantastic rate of $180 per couple for the seven dances. Visitors to individual dances are also welcome for $30 per couple, payable at the door. This guest fee is credited to the annual membership fee if visitors join the club at or before the next dance.

Visitors are asked to contact the club to let us know you will attend so that we can provide adequate seating.

With the renewed interest in ballroom dancing, the club has engaged the services of Greg Wendling, a dance instructor with 10 years experience in teaching and coaching social dance. Greg will offer lessons from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m., utilizing the 2,500 square foot, hardwood dance floor at the Rodeway. Greg is experienced in smooth rhythms (foxtrot, waltz), Latin (cha-cha, rhumba, salsa), swing (East Coast, West Coast, Lindy), tango, and several other specialty dances. He will focus his instruction on the interests of the attendees. There is no additional charge to members – the dance lessons are included in your membership fee. Non-members must pay the standard $30 guest fee to attend both the lesson and the dance itself.

Jennifer has a head wound requiring twenty-six staples and a pelvis break that will require surgery. But when an x-ray reveals that her spinal cord is nearly severed, the surgery is put on hold…and then she suffers a stroke, leaving her left side unresponsive.

Jennifer will remain in intensive care for a month—with Bobbie by her side the whole time. Amazingly, Jennifer not only survives her injuries but goes on to rehab and moves forward toward healing and forgiveness. Look To Your Library: Reinvigorating The Community Art Tile Project By: Suellen Brenner, Adult Services Supervisor

Estes Park prides itself on being beautiful. Surrounded by natural beauty, we enjoy great views everywhere. It is by design, however, that there is beauty throughout our downtown in the form of public art. Statues, paintings, flowers and even musical instruments have been installed - in partnership with the Town, business owners, local artists and art organizations - charmingly all around us.

One of the most beloved pieces of public art decorates the underpass that is part of the river walk. The tiles on this pedestrian tunnel were hand-painted by community members and students over 10 years ago. Cynthia Elkins, art teacher at Eagle Rock School, spearheaded the Community Art Tile Project in 2005 with the goal of connecting people from different generations and diverse walks of life through the creation of art.

You can’t help but stop to view the tiles as you enter the underpass. People engage in conversation during chance meetings with neighbors as we view, consider and enjoy the small, handmade paintings. The variety of tiles is impressive, whether created by a preschooler or professional artist; the tiles come together in a singular, beautiful mosaic.

The Community Art Tile Project has promoted interaction in one of our most highly visible public spaces. But it’s not finished.

It’s time to reinvigorate the Community Art Tile Project. If you’ve walked this route, you know that we have an opportunity to restore, enhance and grow our

public art, one tile at a time. Local art teachers, FMC, Estes Thrives, Eagle Rock School, and Eagle Scout Will Peters have come together and committed to this project. The Library is privileged to be among these partners. As such, the Estes Valley Library Friends & Foundation will receive donations on behalf of the project. Why? In library surveys, you’ve asked us to provide spaces and services to express yourselves. We are listening.

To further that goal, we invite you to join us at the library for a kick-off art tile-painting event on Saturday, September 24 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Come be a part of this revitalization effort and express your creativity through painting.

Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned artist or have never picked up a paintbrush, you can contribute to a more beautiful Estes Park. In addition to the library-hosted event this month, watch for more pop-up art tile painting events to come. The Art Tile Project will culminate with both new tiles and tiles previously painted but not installed during the original project, being installed in the pedestrian tunnel.

A shared art project in the community has lasting benefits – these projects bring community together while teaching students about the value of beautifying a public space and, as such, strengthening the quality of life in our community.

EVRPD Fall Sports And Events Youth Volleyball Leagues (4th-6th grade co-rec) This year’s volleyball program will be a combination of an instructional program, in which all the players learn and *practice together (depending on registration numbers), and will be divided into individual teams for game days and each team will have their own team jersey for the season. We welcome back Coach Katie Plassmeyer who will be coaching the whole program. She will train all the participants on practice days and coach different teams on game days, along with assistant coaches. Early registration dates: Monday, September 19 through Monday, October 17, 2016. Program dates: November 2 through December 14. Practices will be Mondays and games will be on Wednesdays only. *Exception: the first three sessions will be practices, which are Wednesday, November 2, Wednesday, November 9, and Monday, November 14. Estes Valley Recreation and Park District is forming travel basketball teams for 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th grades in the Northern Valley Athletic Association.

There are separate boys and girls teams.

Divisions will be combined if there are not enough players in one age group.

Teams will practice twice a week starting in November and play Saturday games starting in December. There are six regular season games and an end of season tournament. Traveling is required; games will be played down in the Front Range and a couple of the games will be hosted in Estes Park. Early registration dates: Monday, September 19 through Monday, October 17. **There is no online registration for this program. NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Skills Challenge And Hot Dogs!

Join us for the annual NFL Punt, Pass, Kick competition and stay for free hot dogs/chips/drink! This football competition is a state-wide event held by different towns across the state of Colorado. It is a free event in which kids compete in punting, passing, and kicking. There are separate boys and girls divisions in each age group. The local first place winners of each division advance to a sectionals competition to compete against other local winners from the state. The top four

first-place scorers in each division from the pool of sectionals advance to the Team Championships at an NFL stadium. Local competitors receive a participation award and the top 3 receive a ribbon. Date: Sunday, September 25, 2016. Time: 2:00-5:00 p. m. Divisions: Boys and Girls; 6 & 7, 8 & 9, 10 & 11, 12 & 13, 14 & 15 year olds. Location: Bobcat Stadium. September 28th Summer Enchanted Evening At The Baldpate Inn Rocky Mountain National Park Geology Connor Newman will take attendees on a virtual hike through Rocky Mountain National Park, showcasing the incredible geologic features the area has to offer. Along the way we will see various different types of rocks and glacial features, all culminating at a high alpine lake.

Connor Newman is a native of Boulder County, where he grew up spending many days and nights in Rocky Mountain National Park. Connor attended the University of Colorado at Boulder for his Bachelor’s in geology, and later received his Master’s degree in geology and geochemistry from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Connor has visited numerous beautiful

and interesting landscapes through his work as a geologist, but Rocky Mountain National Park still remains one of his favorite places. Although Connor now works as a geologist for the State of Nevada and doesn’t get to visit Rocky Mountain as much as he would like, he enjoys every opportunity to spend time in and around the Park.

Proposal For Unregulated ADUs Is A Concern

To The Editor: Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are in the news again. The Town is pushing to change the Land Use Code to allow the long-term rental of attached ADU’s throughout the valley. Their rationale for moving quickly is that it would add workforce housing to mitigate the upcoming closure of Highway 34 in the canyon. On the surface this seems like a good idea, but let’s takes a closer look.

First, the Town is assuming that there are a number of ADUs out there ready to be rented. From listening to Town staff at the Planning Commission’s study session and public hearing, it’s clear they don’t have any idea of how many ADUs exist in the valley and how many might be available for rent. The best they could do was count the number of homes with secondary kitchens using county records, and then making the assumption that all those homes would rent out those areas.

This is dubious at best. Many people have built homes with secondary kitchens and have no intention of creating and renting an ADU. Among the homes that actually have an ADU, it is likely that few, if any would be ready to rent this fall. First, anyone with an ADU and the desire to rent it out is likely doing so already. The reason: there is no enforcement of the existing prohibition on renting an ADU. Secondly, many homeowners with ADUs have no desire to rent them out. ing shortage, particularly if there is no requirement to restrict the rental to local workers?

Town officials pushed to approve the ADU concept a few years ago. Many residents were concerned that the ADUs would simply add another vehicle for providing short-term summer rental units for tourists. Those who have followed the lack of zoning enforcement in Town assumed that ADUs would be rented with the intent of maximizing rental returns by owners, as opposed to providing long-term rental for workers.

Nothing has changed since, and the move to increase the short-term summer rental market by Town officials and realtors should make us highly skeptical that ADUs would be used to house our local work force. To address this concern, the Town needs to present a believable plan to regulate future ADUs to address the intent for long-term rentals.

If we open up the entire valley to ADU rentals, other questions need to be considered. Should the owner be required to live in the main dwelling when the ADU is rented long-term? If not, can both the main dwelling and ADU be rented longterm? If both are rented long-term, can they be rented to separate tenants or to one tenant who will rent both the main dwelling and ADU (perhaps subletting the ADU)? Should existing ADUs be inspected for code compliance? Should the impact on utilities be considered, especially sewer and water?

The Association for Responsible Development was formed to allow public representation concerning issues of future development in Estes Park. A major concern involves actions proposed by developers and the Town that could markedly increase the housing density in our community without proposing a well thought out plan that will respect the rights of citizens living in residential communities.

Absent facts, the purported increase in workforce housing is an assumption. Often, bad development & land use decisions are founded on assumptions, rather than facts, which are better bases for decisions. While we need additional housing to provide homes for our workforce, this should not come at the expense of uncontrollable increases in the density of dwellings in residential neighborhoods.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Professor Lindsay spent a year studying in Cairo, and continues to make regular visits to the Middle East. The author of numerous articles and books, his latest volume, The Intensification and Reorientation of Sunni Jihad Ideology, came out in 2012. Plein Air Rockies Collection Available For Purchase Online

Fall Colors paint-out is underway Plein Air Rockies 2016 continues at the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park with the Fall Colors paint-out which went underway on Sept. 17. For an additional two weeks, participating artists in Plein Air Rockies are invited to return to the area to paint images of the changing season in the Rocky Mountains.

The culmination of these results will be added to the existing show to refresh the exhibition for "Fall Colors," which will open at a First Friday celebration in Oc-

tober.

Plein Air Rockies is the biggest, most comprehensive art event in Estes Park featuring 30 artists from all over the country visiting to paint for two weeks and submit their best three paintings (with a fourth in reserve) for competition. The winners were announced at an awards ceremony on August 27.

The exhibition will be available through October 30, with the additional Fall Colors paint-out results premiering on October 7 at an opening reception

The 8th Annual Storm Mountain Holiday Bazaar is rapidly approaching! They will again have a number of local artisans displaying beautiful handmade items that would make wonderful holiday gifts.

This sale is much earlier this year in order to beat the closing of US Highway 34; and organizers hope you will come through the canyon, see some fall colors, and stop in to shop. A serving of chili and tortilla will be available for $3; larger quantities can also be purchased to take home. If you want a larger quantity, for Friday dinner perhaps, they can provide that too. All funds go to the local volunteer fire department to provide any items needed for the new firehouse, such as firefighting equipment and tools for the

Carlos Antonio Suarez Carlos peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 10, 2016.

Carlos passed away at home in Estes Park, Colorado surrounded by his loving family, friends and his 12year-old “man’s best friend” golden retriever, Rusty.

Carlos was born in Bronx, NY where he grew up being raised by his loving and inspirational Grandmother “Leila.” “Charlie” grew up to become an advocate for the poor, elderly and abused people of the neighborhoods by forming and leading a “peace treaty” in the early 1970s with fellow gang leaders of the surrounding boroughs; he was the proud President of the Ghetto Brothers street gang. Carlos was famous for this awesome part of history and went by the name “Karate Charlie.”

Carlos, “Charlie” saved countless lives by stepping up and saying, “Enough!”

The abuse of the elderly and defenseless was more than he could tolerate-always a warrior, he never backed down.

After becoming a black belt in karate, he taught self-defense classes for free in a church basement.

Carlos joined the military and became a proud United States Marine. Upon returning home to the Bronx, he worked for the city of New York as a youth counselor.

Moving to Fort Myers, Florida, he continued his quest by volunteering at several local organizations, where he was honored by being awarded the “Citizen of the Year” award in 1997 in Lee County, Florida.

Carlos is preceded in death by his parents, grandmother Leila and grandson Alex Lei Suarez, Jr., who passed on Sep-

tember 8, 2015.

Carlos is survived by his wife of 22 years, Theresa, his children, two daughters, Heather of Northglenn, Colorado who gave him one grandson and two granddaughters, Maranglee of Puerto Rico, who gave him two granddaughters, 1 great granddaughter and three grandsons, Carlos K. Suarez of Bronx, NY has given him three granddaughters and a grandson. Carlos also had a son Michael of Bronx, NY, two sons in Florida, Eddie of Lehigh Acres, Florida gave Carlos two grandsons and three granddaughters and Alex Lei of Fort Myers, FL, who gave him three grandsons; RIP Alex Jr. Carlos is also survived by his motherin-law “Amazing Grace,” of TN, numerous family such as his brothers, brothers-in-law, daughters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews (too numerous to name).

Services will be held in both Estes Park, CO, (small family and close friends), in the mountains he so loved.

The large main Celebration of Life ceremony will be held in the Bronx, NY per his last wishes.

The Suarez family would like to thank Hospice of Estes Valley for their unbelievable kindness and support to help us get through this sad time in our lives. They are incredible.

Carlos is already beyond missed, his soul is at peace and his body at rest.

Richard Gordon (Dick) Stafford Richard G. Stafford, 73, of Estes Park, Colorado, died on September 19, 2016 as a result of bone marrow cancer (myelodysplastic syndrome).

Born on October 13, 1942 in Los Angeles, California, to Richard G. and Helen Lee Stafford, Richard grew up and attended schools in Burbank, California. He received his B.S. at the University of California at Berkley, then his M.S. and Phd. in Physics at Oregon State University, Eugene, Oregon. He completed post-doctoral studies in Dortmund, Germany and at Yale. Richard was employed by Bell Labs, then later by DuPont Corp. as a scientist. He retired from DuPont in 1998. While attending graduate school, he met and married his first wife, Sally Slocum Stafford. Later, they were divorced. Richard moved to Estes Park in 2008 to enjoy the mountains he loved. It was here that he met his second wife, Ruth Goetzel. They enjoyed travel, the outdoors and dancing together. Richard was a member of the

Friday Niters Club, Rocky Mountain Nature Association and the Village Band for a time. Known for his sense of humor and infectious laugh, Richard will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

He is survived by his wife; brother, James Donaghe (Chris); sister, Diana Donaghe; stepson, Jevan Wurgaft; two nephews and two granddaughters.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and beloved stepfather, Donald Donaghe.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens on Fish Hatchery Road in Estes Park. A reception will follow at Allnutt Funeral service 1302 Graves Avenue in Estes Park.

Robin Washburne Robin Washburne, summer resident in Estes Park and regular attendee at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies during the summers, died September 10th 2016 at a memory care unit of a retirement home in Brea CA at age 91. She and her husband Brent came to Estes Park for 65 summers without an exception.

A celebration of life ceremony will take place in Fullerton CA this week and they will have another ceremony in Estes Park next summer. Interment of ashes will be in the PCCR Columbarium. Brent expects to move to the retirement home in Estes Park when they have an opening.
