Christmas Edition 2013
Estevan Mercury
Christmas Greetings 2013
Christmas message from Premier Brad Wall A lot of emotions surround the Christmas season: happiness, reverence, nostalgia, excitement. It’s a favorite time of year for many of us. We look forward to family times of fun and laughter. Seeing someone we love opening a gift into which we have put a little thought. Being with friends who we don’t see enough. Relaxing and enjoying good food…sometimes a little too much good food. And refreshing our Faith in the One who is the real reason behind it all. For unto all of us was born that day in the city of David…a Saviour who is Christ the Lord. And that Baby named Jesus who was born that night, grew into a man who told us to love one another. And that’s the spirit of Christmas. George (Matthew) Adams says “I shall try to make my life like an open fireplace, so that people may be warmed and cheered by it and so go out themselves to warm and cheer.”
That is because there are often other emotions that surround this season as well: sadness, loneliness, longing, discouragement. It may be our seniors, those who are disabled or ill, people who are alone, or those who have suffered a recent loss. It may be families that are new to our province looking for friendship, looking for a place to belong. Families that may also be concerned about events happening in the country from which they came..like the Philippines Maligayang Pasko to all our Pilipino friends this season. These events are catastrophic, almost unimaginable. They call to our hearts. They call us to act. Like the action in a story submitted by a reader to a Saskatchewan newspaper, which described the true spirit that should accompany our yearly Christmas celebrations. It seems a refugee family was in a store purchasing essential items for establishing a home here for
themselves. A woman, another customer, approached the family and asked some questions, after which she went off to pick out a toy for the couple’s little boy. And THEN proceeded to pay for the toy AND all the other items they had gathered. It came to several hundred dollars. That is Love in action. That is Christmas in action. An anonymous hero just out sharing some warmth and cheer. A reminder for all of us that…for to whom much is given...of them much shall be required. Just like a restaurant in Moose Jaw that makes Christmas dinner for the less fortunate. The class of kids in Milestone who regularly visit a seniors’ home. Or the families in Prince Albert who lovingly place necessities and small treasures in shoeboxes for kids, half-way around the world, who they will never meet. That’s Saskatchewan people reaching out to each
other AND to those around the world. I encourage all of us here in this great province, where so many of us have so much, to share Christmas with someone who needs
Seasons Greetings
warmth and cheer. So from me and my wife Tami, and our children: Megan, Colter and Faith, and on behalf of my colleagues in the government of Saskatchewan, I
wish for all of you, a Merry Christmas. The Joy and Peace we all want, and the Hope we all need. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
From Ed Komarnicki, MP Dear Friends, Sally and I extend from our home to yours, peace, love and joy, with warmest wishes for a very Merry Christmas, and a happy and prosperous New Year. As you gather with family and friends, may you reminisce of good times past, relish the present, and view the next year with optimism and hope. As I reflect on the past year and contemplate the future, I am keenly aware that we live in a great and prosperous country with much to be thankful for. Life has its ups and downs, unexpected events, and at times, many surprises, but on balance it has been great to be living in this time of history. May you experience the warmth of the season and may the Lord’s face and favour shine upon you as you step into the New Year. Once again, on behalf of both Sally and I, best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Ed Komarnicki Member of Parliament Souris – Moose Mountain

My Favorite Things About Christmas These are my favorite things about Christmas. Think about it. What are your favorite things about Christmas? Christmas is a holiday. It is actually my favorite holiday. On Christmas we give and we get. We celebrate Jesus’ birth. You can make ginger bread houses and men. Christmas makes everyone really happy. On Christmas everybody has beautiful, colorful lights and decorations. It is a wonderful sight. When Jesus the Messiah was born he got gifts. Jesus is very important to us. That is why we celebrate Christmas. I celebrate Christmas with my family every year. These are thing I do on Christmas. Every year we do a draw who is buying for who. I love doing that. Most people put up Christmas trees. I know some people how don’t put up Christmas trees. My family puts up real trees every year and it takes us all day love to decorate it. I like to help my aunties and uncles put up Christmas lights. I love going on the roof. Most of the time my family opens one present of choice on Christmas Eve. I get lots of presents because I have lots of different places to go and get different presents. I go to my dads, moms, and sometimes grandpas and grandmas, and one of my cousin sepretly. I love Christmas, it is my favorite holiday. We are so lucky to be living in Canada. Some families don’t even get gifts in other countries. That is why my school, Sacred Heart/Sacre Coeur, does Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is when you have boxes for different ages and for boys and girls. You fill the boxes with stuff that that age group will like. Then someone ships them off to the kids who need them most. I feel great when I help out and the kids who get nothing enjoy it. So this makes them really happy. Now you know what my favorite things about Christmas are and you have time to think about yours. I love Christmas and I hope you do to. By Trinity
My Christmas story Once upon a time Santa fell down the chimney on Christmas Eve. He got up and delivered the rest of the presents all over the world and went back to his reindeer. They looked cold and White so he knew Jack Frost had come then he used his PNPD to call the elves “Jack Frost is coming” said Santa. By the way……The PNPD was made up of the people’s spirits of them who believed in Santa. The parts have lots of use. The big long stick was used to accept Santa’s calls. The red button was a self-destruct button and the green button sent calls to Santa. So then he went back to the North Pole and the landing strip lights where off and all the elves where busy so they couldn’t turn them on. So, Taylor *who* Taylor turned the lights on and saved Santa because he was hurt. So, Taylor got to help out Santa next Christmas but…*bum, bum, bum* people stopped believing in Santa so his sleigh started to fall from the sky into central park and the police where going to throw him into jail but a little kid took Santa’s book and took it to the reporter and she didn’t believe until he got to her name and said what she wanted then she believed. Another girl started to sing and Santa’s SPIRIT-OMETER went up. After, everybody else started to sing and Santa’s SPIRIT-OMETER went up all the way so now it’s full. So those three people saved Christmas.*yay, they saved Santa!* By Taylor
My Christmas Story Once upon a time, it was Christmas Eve. A brother and Sister were getting ready for Santa to come. They had up their Christmas tree and decorations, and they were listening to Christmas carols.

“I can’t wait until Santa comes,” said Sally. “I can’t believe it’s been 30 days since November 26, when we were dreaming about Christmas and Santa,” said Nick. Sally and Nick are putting out milk and cookies for Santa. “I hope Santa likes these chocolate chip cookies I made for him,” said Sally. In the middle of the night Sally heard bells jingling. “Nick, Nick,” said Sally. “I heard bells, I think it might be Santa,” said Sally. Sally and Nick go out to the living room. “Look Nick,” said Sally. “Look at what,” said Nick. “Look, the chimney is moving,” said Sally. “It’s Santa, its Santa,” said Sally, beaming. Santa came down the chimney. “What are you two doing up so late,” said Santa.” I heard your bells,” said Sally. “Me to,” said Nick. “You two need to get to sleep,” said Santa. Santa took them to bed and sprinkled his magic sleeping dust on them. In the morning Sally and Nick got up super early. “I can’t believe we saw Santa,” said Sally. “I know, he was cool,” said Nick. “Whoa, look at the tree,” said Sally. “That’s a lot of presents,” said Nick. “Yeah,” said Sally. “I love Christmas,” said Nick. “The important thing is that we celebrate Jesus birth, not presents,” said Sally. “Of course,” said Nick. Although, Nick and Sally love Christmas, they learned that the most important thing is to spend time with family and to celebrate Jesus birth. The End

My Christmas Story
Celebrate the Season!
Once a pone a time there were two best friends having a sleepover on Christmas Eve. At the sleepover Ashley and Skylar are making Christmas presents for each other. Ashley is making a card and a bead necklace for Skylar. Skylar is making a card and keychain for Ashley. After they were done making presents for each other Skylar’s mom said “You can play the Wii.’’ Skylar answered “Thanks mom, I love you.’’ For supper Skylar’s mom made Chicken, porgies and rice. After supper they put on makeup and then played the Wii again. It was 9:30 and both girls wanted to go to bed. When it was 9:45 Skylar’s mom went to put the presents under the tree then went to bed. It was 6:00am and Ashley and Skylar went to her mom’s room to wake her mom up. The girls opened the presents from Skylar’s mom first. They each had 15 presents from Skylar’s mom. Then they opened Santa’s presents and they both got 5 from him. Ashley asked, “Can I phone my mom?’’ Skylar mom answered back, “Yes you can.” So Ashley phoned her mom. “Mom are you going to bring Skylar’s and me presents here?” “Yes I will.” “Tell Skylar’s mom I will be there at 11:30 and ask if you can stay there for two more weeks? “Why will I be here for two more weeks if I can?” “I will tell you when you get back.” “Ok” So Ashley went to Skylar’s mom and ask, “Can I stay here for two more weeks?” “Yes you can.” “Do you know why?” “Yes I do.” So Ashley went back to the phone. “She said yes.” “You were going to tell me why you need her to watch me?” “I need her to watch you because your father and I are going on a vacation and it will be just the two of use.” “So it is like a honeymoon?” “Yes something like that.” So Ashley hand up the phone, and went back to Skylar. They finished opening presents. Skylar’s mom made waffles for breakfast. Skylar made oatmeal and she also ate the waffles her mom made. Ashley ate waffles with strawberry’s and strawberry syrup on top. Skylar’s mom ate waffles. It was 10:30 an hour left and then Ashley’s mom would be here. Well Ashley and Skylar were waiting they played Just Dance 2014. They played that for a while. Now it was 11:20 Ashley’s mom would be here in 10min. when Ashley’s mom was driving and there was a train, so she decided to call Skylar’s home phone. Skylar’s mom answered the phone “Hello.” “Hi.” “It is me Ashley’s mom I will be late.” “How will you be late?” There is a train.” “Ok I will tell the girls.” “By.” “By.” They hand up. Skylar went to the girls and said “Ashley your mom will be late.” “LATE!” “Yes.” “Why is she going to be late?” “There is a long train.” she said. Now it was 11:35, Ashley’s mom was still not here. The played Just Dance in till it was it was 11:50. Finally, Ashley’s mom got there at 11:55. Ashley said “Mom you’re here your actually here. “Yes I am actually here. Ashley’s mom gave Skylar’s and Ashley’s presents. They each got 3 presents form Ashley’s mom. Ashley got makeup, a water jug, and some ponytails. Skylar got makeup, a lot of art stuff, and she also got a golden Retriever puppy. Ashley’s mom left to go to their honeymoon in Edmonton. Then it was two weeks later and Ashley’s mom was back in Estevan. Then pickup Ashley and went back to their house. The End By Bryla fornwald

My Christmas Story My last Christmas was in San Francisco, California, United States of America. The first night we were there we went to church, and the church was full, the Priest said there was 1,697 people in the Parish. After church we went home. My home is by Candlestick Park ( Where the 49ers play football for the NFL.)It took us one hour to get home. My aunties, uncles, cousins, siblings, niece, grandma, and grandpa. All my family came from Estevan, Swift Current, Saskatoon, Regina, Outlook, Calgary, Melfort, and Truro NS, now they are at my house. Soon, we will have supper. For supper we have, Trout (fish), shrimp, pasta, perogies, rice, lasagna, and some kinds of salad, such as taco salad, and caesar salad. Supper was yum, yum. Everything was super good, I liked everything on that table. For dessert we had vanilla ice cream and peach crisp. After dessert our family went to the living room so we can open presents. When I got into the living room, I was excited I thought I would get a special gift from everyone. After the presents I counted the presents that I got twentytwo presents altogether. After, our guests were going to the airport to fly home. I said, “Bye!” to most of them. So my family went to the airport and went home. Also they were safe, there home and there safe. By: Kyle
What Christmas is about Christmas is about celebrating Jesus’s Birthday. It’s about giving gifts. It’s about going to church. It’s about celebrating everything good. Like…Being happy, buying presents, making people really happy. Writing letters, Christmas child, and baking everybody pie. Buying treats, eating candy, singing little Christmas carols. Secret Santa, caching claws, and getting ready for Christmas. Inviting cousins, setting up the Christmas tree. Playing games, building snow forts, writing stories about Christmas. Reading Christmas books, putting up ornaments and that’s it!!!! THE END!

Jack Frost Christmas Story Once upon a time there was a guy name Jack Frost. He likes to play games, and he especially like to play snowball fight. One day Santa got sick, so he called, Jack Frost. When Jack got to Santa’s house, Santa told him to deliver all the presents. Jack was surprise, he never delivers presents before, and he doesn’t know what to do. Santa told Jack everything he needs to know. Then Jack climbed up the sleigh and left. He went to U.S.A, China, Japan, and other places. The last place he went, was Estevan, Jack Frost went to every houses and the last person he went to was Betsi. When Jack Frost got to Betsi’s house, he put the presents under the Christmas tree. When he turned around he saw a kid behind the chair, it was Betsi. When Jack Frost asked Betsi, where were the cookies and milk, Betsi said that his dad ate the cookies, and his mom drink the milk. Jack Frost said goodbye and left. He said this is the best Christmas ever. By Emmanuel

I was 5 one Christmas. Everything was fine until *scary music* one man ruined it all! The criminal… JACK FROST! *screams* Jack Frost was once a helper for Santa Clause *what?!* But then he moved the PNPD-portable North Pole device (calls the elves to were it is). Some were far far away from town so they will never find home. The reason this was bad was because no elves in town to turn on the landing lights. So Santa had to make a tricky landing. But luckily I had been there and turned on the landing lights. And that I returned the PNPD *YAY* So it was a bad Christmas for Santa. But from that day for ward I was known as the Christmas Hero! My Christmas Story Friday My Christmas Story begins like this……… It was Friday, and we got the next week off. It was Christmas weekend that weekend. We had twenty minutes until the bell was going to ring. We were in period ten and were doing science. It was sooo BORING!! We were learning about how trees were made into wood, TALKING MUSHROOMS would be more interesting than this. Five minutes until the bell was going to ring. Mrs.Rouldough, still won’t let us pack up. Mrs.Rouldough is my teacher. She is older than all of the other teachers, and when she here’s the bell she screams, then runs and hides under her desk. Two minutes until the bell was going to ring. That’s when I burst and said this, “That’s it! You red-nosed Freakish REINDEER! Let us go pack up because I am Waiting for Christmas!!!!!” I yelled. Then the whole class clapped and the bell rang. Of course she talked to me, but I didn’t really care. I needed Christmas!!!! When I got home my mom just stared at me with a face that said, ”You know what you did today?” I tried to walk to the couch but unfortunately, she stopped me. “You know what you did today!” mom exclaimed. “I knew it!!” I shouted. “You knew what?” mom asked. “Oh, I knew that you were goanna ask me that question”, I stated, “you called your teacher a Reindeer?” mom asked. “I know”, I said without care. I sat on the couch by my sister Mya. She was painting her nails and I was eating a piece of meat. Mom left the room. Bear and Miko jumped up on the couch. “I think what I said wasn’t too bad, was it?” I stated. I looked at Bear and he looked at me and stared. Bear and Miko are my dogs. I love them. Saturday Today I took Bear and Miko for a walk. I could see something black from a distance. The dogs started to run towards it. I got really scared. We got closer and I stopped the dogs, it was a……a cat!! I looked around for an owner, but the streets were empty. No one was there but me, my dogs, and that strange black cat. How strange it is that there is a BLACK cat roaming the streets. Oh, I forgot all about Christmas!!!:) It’s on Tuesday. We are already doing a bit of decorating our house, is going to look fantastic! I am so excited, I can’t wait. Anyway, about five minutes later I went inside and it was lightly snowing. Then, about a half an hour later there was a snow storm. I remembered the cat, and felt bad for it so I was going to go outside and get it. Right when I opened the door the cat was sitting there. I wasn’t sure what to do with it, take it or leave it. Then I realized it was shivering and felt bad, so I took it in. “Mom! We got a cat!” I yelled. “That’s great!” my mom shouted without even knowing what she said. “Just wait” I said to myself. “WHAT??” mom yelled. “Yeah, I found it” I chuckled. ”You have to keep it outside” she shouted back. “WHY?” I questioned. “Because you call you teacher a REINDEER! That is your punishment! ”. “It’s no fear!” I shouted. ”Conversation ended” mom said. So… I let it go outside.
With thanks for your valued business.

HO, HO, HOLIDAY GREETINGS Delivering wishes merry and bright to all of our friends and neighbors at Christmas time! With sincere thanks for your loyal support, we wish you and yours a very merry Christmas! 80 King Street, E., Estevan, Sk
Sunday I decided to feed the cat everyday. I have a water and food bowl for it. Outside, of course. I still don’t know why mom won’t let to keep him inside. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you that cat is a boy. I named him Marvin. He is all black with green eyes. So far he has stayed around. We put up the posters in the city, so whoever owns him can claim or pick him up. In the mean time my mom was decorating a house. I played with Marvin for about an hour, outside… Then I helped my mom and Mya with the tree. We made the gingerbread houses with gingerbread men. “Ha ha, looks like Bear and Miko frosted a gingerbread dog!!” Mya laughed. The dogs got into one the icing bowls. We all laughed, in fact, we almost cried tears of joy. It was funny. Then I went to check on Marvin and he was gone…GONE… I told my mom, but she said, ”he probably went back to his owners.” I don’t believe so. I decided that I am going to search for Marvin. I walked two blocks and still can’t find him. He’ll come back, I know he will. Maybe I need to focus on something else. I know! Christmas! Christmas is on Tuesday, can’t wait. I want a mini laptop, a mini camera, and not mini nail polish. Even though Christmas is awesome. I can’t stop thinking about Marvin. So I went out to look for him again, this time four blocks. What if mom said is true? Monday I have good news and bad news. You can hear the bad news first. The bad news is that since Christmas is tomorrow, I have to clean a house today. The good news is that Christmas is tomorrow. Oh, and Marvin came back. I wrote a letter to Santa too. I had to clean my room and the living room. And since Mya’s room was clean, she had to clean the bathrooms and the kitchen. It took me about a half an hour to clean my room. My dogs Miko likes to sit on the couch by the window, and looks at the street. Anyway when I was cleaning the living room she tried to jump on the couch, then she jumped, then bounced back from the couch. It was funny. We went outside to decorate the house. We put lights and set up our blow up Snowman. Then, it is my favorite part, we put all our ornaments on the tree. We had an ornament that was made of Rice Krispy’s, and Miko and Bear got into it, and It was all over the place. So I had to vacuum again. We bought a Santa costume for Marvin and two elf’s costumes for Miko and Bear. It is awesome, they can wear it tomorrow. I had a plan, that I will stay up until one o’clock tonight. Miko and Bear were in my bed, waiting for me. I went to check what Mya is doing. “Oh, it stinks in here!” I commented. “I’m doing nails, so Santa can like them.” Ok, it was a time to go to bed, Christmas tomorrow. Tuesday Today is Christmas! I woke up at 6:30 this morning. There was TEN presents under the tree! Wow! For only three people! If count the dogs there is two present for everyone. I got, I got a mini camera and a laptop, just like I wanted. Mya got a nail set with litter and everything and a pedicure set. And it was a present for Marvin too. He got new food and water bowl, and mom said that we can keep Marvin. What a great Christmas present! Thank you, mom. Miko and Bear got some things. And mom, well, she got a professional camera and a photo album. Every one was happy. After we had a feast for SIX. We went to Mass. It was so joyful! I was thinking about the presents, and I forgot what Christmas is really about. JUSES! I felt bad after church. After we came home, I stared at Nativity scene on the mantel. I just sat there and stared at it, I zoned out for a minute. I didn’t know how to do anything but breath. Then the dog nudged me. I got on my knees and pray, and confessed my sins. After I felt so much better. I got my laptop and camera set up. Mya was automatically doing her nails, right away. And mom was already putting the pictures in her album. I guess this Christmas wasn’t too bad after all. The End. - By Markie
