Prevention Week
October 9-15, 2011 Message from the Mayor Since my office is next to the fire station I often hear the fire trucks leaving the station. It occurs a lot more than I would have imagined years ago. Also, with more traffic there are more accidents and they are often involved in case of rescue. This year has already been a far busier one than normal because of the flood situation. For many consecutive days our fore fighters were risking their lives and health to boat our employees to the water treatment plant so we could keep providing potable water. Since most of our fire fighters are
volunteer this put a lot of strain on the companies they work for so I need to thank the companies who are great corporate businesses by their employees to serve our city through the Fire Department. Thanks also goes out to Chief Ron Tocker and Deputy Chief Dale Feser for their commitment and leadership to our city. The next time you see one of our fire fighters please let them know how much they are appreciated. We are certainly thankful of the great job they do. Gary St.Onge

Fire prevention is everyone’s responsibility
Check smoke detectors once a month and change the batteries at least once a year. Smoke detectors sense abnormal amounts of smoke or invisible combustion gases in the air. They can detect both smoldering and burning Àres. At least one smoke detector should be installed on every level of a structure. Purchase smoke detectors labeled by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM)

Space heaters need space. Keep them at least three feet away from things that can burn, such as curtains or stacks of newspaper. Always turn off heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.
Teach every family member to “Stop, Drop, Roll and Cool” if clothes catch Àre by dropping immediately to the ground, crossing hands over your chest and rolling over and over or back and forth to put out the Áames. Cool the burned area with cool water and seek medical attention for serious burns.
Use a screen to contain Àreplace sparks.
Be Careful Cooking Keep the handles of your pots turned inward so they do not over-hang the stove. If grease catches Àre, carefully slide a lid over the pan and smother the Áames, then turn off the burner.

All smoke alarms are not the same. Photoelectric smoke alarms are a good choice near kitchens. Their sensors are best at detecting slow smouldering fires so you will have fewer false alarms when you burn the toast. Ionization smoke alarms are a good choice for general living areas, as
they are best at detecting fast-flaming fires. Fire departments say that having both types of alarms installed in your home provides the best protection. More information on the different types of smoke alarms and other fire safety tips can be found online at www.safeathome. ca.
