Crude-filled tanker cars derail By Chad Saxon editor@estevanmercury.ca

Estevan’s emergency services personnel, and residents, were able to breath a sigh of relief Thursday after a train derailment was resolved without major incident or injury. The derailment, which occurred Thursday at around 11 a.m., saw four tanker cars filled with crude oil jump the tracks just north of the Devonian Industrial Subdivision. Although the worst was feared in the immediate aftermath, none of the tanker cars ruptured during the derailment, which occurred on a low speed section of track near CP’s oil transloading facility but not at it. “It could have been very serious, but thankfully it was not,” said Mayor Roy Ludwig in an interview Monday. “We consider ourselves very fortunate.” Ludwig, who was in Lloydminster for the Saskatchewan City Mayors’ Caucus when the derailment occurred was quick to thank

to deal with these types of situations,” he said. “I want to also thank CP. They did a very good job of ensuring that nothing was spilled even though the cars were laid over. They decanted and as it worked out, thank goodness nothing was spilled, so it was a total success.” Thursday’s derailment

was the City’s first since 2004 when a number of cars left the track near Estevan Diversified Services. In that instance, ammonia leaked from the derailed cars, forcing the evacuation of residences in the area. In the years before and after the 2004 incident, the City’s EMO group has been

active in planning for the worst-case scenario given the amount of hazardous materials that are transported through Estevan on a daily basis. Although the worst-case scenario did not materialize, the preparation was evident in the aftermath of the derailment, which is under investi-

gation by Transport Canada. Fire rescue service personnel arrived at the scene within minutes and set about securing the scene and assessing whether or not there was a leak. By 1:30 that afternoon, a media conference was held at Investigation ⇢ A2

City discussing which streets will remain open to trucks As work continues on the heavy-truck bypass around the northern outskirts of Estevan, the City is also looking to review and revise which roads within city limits are going to continue accepting heavy trucks in the future. Going forward council agreed during their regular meeting on May 5 that allowing fewer trucks on city streets is better than the opposite. City council had previously raised concerns with Fourth Avenue being a designated truck route, and during a review of the routes around the city, council identified three other areas to be reconsidered, Alice Road from Woodlawn Avenue to the west city boundary, Woodlawn Avenue from Alice Road to the south city boundary and Sixth Street from Second Avenue to Kensington Avenue. The report from city engineer Kiflom Weldeab was returned to council last week. Councillor Kevin Smith raised some concerns over the

potential removal of the truck route designation on Sixth Street. If the city began to no longer allow trucks on Sixth Street between Kensington and Second, Smith asked if they would be restricting access to all trucks over a certain weight or whether existing businesses on that stretch of road would be permitted on the street with oversized loads. Most of Sixth Street isn’t a truck route, but there is a 375-metre stretch west of Kensington Avenue to Second Avenue that allows them. The recommendation to council noted the City should either revisit classifying that section of Sixth Street as a truck route or include Second Avenue from Third Street to Sixth Street as a truck route so heavy loads are able to loop back around to Kensington. Weldeab said as it stands, the Sixth Street truck route goes nowhere. “It doesn’t loop around. That is a truck route that

doesn’t go anywhere,” said Weldeab, noting if that section of Sixth Street continues as a truck route there should be the inclusion of Second Avenue as well. He added that the issue for many of these roads was that they haven’t been built to withstand heavy-truck traffic, Sixth Street included. Mayor Roy Ludwig said there will be further consultation with the public who will have the opportunity to come forward with their concerns about the truck routes as the bylaw is drawn up. “The whole reason behind this, and I know council is fully behind it, is the degradation of our streets and roads. We simply cannot continue to watch them deteriorate,” said Ludwig. “Now that we’ve got the heavy-truck bypass, we want to restrict wherever possible the heavy-truck traffic on our streets.” Police ⇢ A2

Minot Mafia ready to terrorize Speedway again They like to have fun on and off the track, but the Minot Mafia like nothing more than winning. Brothers Brandon and Brock Beeter dominated the hobby stock class at Estevan Motor Speedway last year along with running mate Brad King. Brandon took the track championship, while Brock and King divvied up most of the other features. They enjoyed themselves immensely in the process, and this year they’re back for more fun. The brothers are racing sport mods this year and Brandon is getting out of the hobby class, but Brock will run both. He will only be able to race part-time in Estevan due to work commitments. King is back and they have a new protege, Andrew Sebastian, who’s currently sitting in second place in the national rookie point standings. Nicknames are part of the fun for the group. King, who hails from Alaska originally, is the Alaskan Squirrel. Sebastian is called the Sea Chicken and Brock’s nickname is Sweet Meat. “I don’t know if you want to put that in the newspaper,” Brock laughed. He insists the Minot Mafia moniker didn’t come from them, but from their racing rivals in the southern U.S. during their winter schedule. King won three features last year, as well as the season opener at Estevan on May 17. He said he has his sights on some championships this year before deciding whether to move to another class. Brock, however, has other ideas. “I’m going to let him go up there and play and let him think he’s really good, and then calm him down and shrink his head because it might get too big.” The Beeters took King under their wing three years ago and helped him to improve, something of a mentor role they have also assumed with several other drivers. “There’s a big differ-

He wants to go to the front, and he ain’t afraid to get a little rough with you. He ain’t dirty, but he’s a little rougher than me and my brother. We take our time and figure out a way around the car, whereas Brad will go for it and maybe bump him. Brad is twice as aggressive as us.” Sebastian joined the

team this year, driving Brandon’s hobby car. He finished fifth in the EMS opener. “Without them, I wouldn’t even have a car. Brandon, out of the generosity of his heart, gave me his car that he’s won 30 features and eight track championships in,” Sebastian said. He added that the brothers have taught him to “keep a calm head, race your own

we race, which is fast and clean. So far so good, he’s been listening to us. “He’s coming along. Give him till mid-season and he should be wrestling with Brad full-time at the front.” Beeter said he enjoys sharing his knowledge with other drivers and it pays off. He said he met one driver in

Lampman driver Kody Scholpp on road to recovery Kody Scholpp knows just how lucky he is to be alive. The 23-year-old modified driver from Lampman is in the race of his life as he recovers from injuries suffered in a car accident earlier this year. Scholpp and a few friends were returning from an evening spent ice fishing on Jan. 31 when, at 9:45 p.m., the truck they were in left the road and rolled over four times. During the course of the rollover, Scholpp’s seat belt was released, and he flew out of the vehicle on the second roll. “Initially, when I was flying out of the vehicle, I fractured my skull and peeled half of my scalp off,” he told the Mercury during a recent interview. “My seatbelt was still around my right shoulder, and it broke my collarbone and tore my shoulder all to pieces. When I was thrown out of the vehicle, I was already unconscious from peeling off my scalp.” Both sides of Scholpp’s skull were fractured. One of his eye sockets was crushed. He broke three discs in his neck and four in his back, as

me,” Scholpp said. “He passed a breathalyzer, but denied them blood because he thought he’d killed me. Because when I left, I was dead. I feel bad for him because he has to live through it.” After making it through the first few days when his life was in danger, Scholpp spent 26 days in hospital in Regina, followed by 16 days at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre. He had been expected to spend three months at Wascana, but he said the excellent therapy allowed him to leave much sooner. Scholpp said there were some hard times spent in the hospital as he came to understand the enormous impact of the accident. He was not able to move his hands or legs at first due to the frostbite. “I didn’t know how I was going to do things from now on,” he said. “The hardest thing was not being able to do things on my own, and that’s who I am. I try to help anybody I can at the race track. There were a lot of nights where I called my parents and my girlfriend and there were a lot of tears. I didn’t know what I was going to do from now on. I didn’t understand it. At the same time, I understand some things have to happen. I’ve never had anything bad happen to me, I’ve always lived life kind of freely, so it was kind of a wake up call. It’s too bad, but in a way, I needed it.” Scholpp received immediate and overwhelming support from →

Racing community rallies around fallen friend after horrific accident ← the community, including other drivers from across Saskatchewan and North Dakota. A Facebook group called Praying For Kody Scholpp was created after the accident and swelled to more than 2,500 members, with friends and fellow drivers checking in on his progress. Pray For Kody stickers were also sold in the community, with the proceeds going to the Scholpp family. He said that support helped him get through the worst times. “When I was just out of the coma, because I couldn’t see very much at all, I would ask my mom daily to read me all the posts on Facebook, and that’s what got me through it, in the little bit I was awake. It kept me going. I can’t say enough about all the people who said things, sent me things and prayed for me. If that didn’t happen, I know I wouldn’t be here. It was definitely a helping hand in keeping me here. “It was unbelievably nice to see. I made my mom go through the list every day, and she would ask me every day, ‘how do you know this person?’And I could tell her where they were from and a little bit about them. That was the best part. Because of my brain trauma, I lost a lot of my memory, but I could remember every one

thing myself. I never really taught my brother (and fellow mod driver) Kyle a lot about working on the race cars because I was there to do it myself. Now I’m not able to.” Still, he said he won’t miss a race at the Speedway this year and will be there to cheer on his fellow drivers. It could be up to three years before Scholpp’s memory is back to normal.

Kody Scholpp cant wait until he can hit the track again but he will have to wait a while. of those people and where I met them.” Scholpp, who won the mod feature on championship night at Estevan Motor Speedway last August, has been told it will be 18 months before his body can handle the jolts of modified racing again. But he’s chomping at the bit to get back on the track before that. “I’m not sure I’ll wait that long. I figure between the middle of July and the start of August I’m going to go out to Trent Emmel’s farm and slowly work my way into it. If I don’t feel comfortable and don’t think I can handle it, I’m going to wait the full 18 months. As for now, my plan is to

go back to the IMCA super nationals and race. That’s my dream. That’s the one thing I’ve set my mind that I’m going to do, but it all depends on how my body feels.” Still, Scholpp’s body is constantly reminding him that he has to take things

Speedway soars in sizzling season Estevan Motor Speedway was a busy place to be in 2013. Here’s a look back at the events of last season and what the winners said in victory lane: The season kicked off with a special matinee on May 4, and the mod feature boasted a dramatic finish as Tyson Turnbull overtook Dave Dease with six laps left and won. Gregg Mann dominated the stock class, winning both the feature and his heat in a walk, while Brandon Beeter picked up the first of many 2014 wins at Estevan for Beeter Racing. “I’d rather come by a few guys and then know what they’re doing, and how their speed is. When you start out front, you don’t really know who’s got what line on you,” Mann said. “I

The first of June was a night to remember for Riley Emmel. The local driver earned his first career modified victory, holding off Ed Turnbull down the stretch to do it. “To get the first win is unreal, especially in a modified at my home track, it feels good to finally get one at my home track. I’ve been trying for two years now. It’s about time I’ve got it,” Emmel said. “I heard Ed coming, I knew he was coming. I just couldn’t see him, so I said, ‘I’m still good, keep going, keep going,’ and I pulled it off.” The night also featured the first sport mod program of the year, with Justin Medler winning. Swanson and Brandon Beeter came out on top in the other features. The Speedway was packed all weekend long June 14-15. The jam-packed doubleheader featured the McComb Automotive Fast 40, the Northern Super Truck Racing circuit from Winnipeg and regular points races both nights.

Aaron Turnbull won the $3,000 prize for the Fast 40, overtaking brother Tyson and then holding off Allen Kent and father Ed. “I was just praying for no more cautions, because Allen was so close to me after that last restart, and I did not want to have to do that again,” Aaron said. It wasn’t meant to be for Kent, although he did win the stock feature earlier. “I thought I had a shot there for a little bit, but then my car went away with about six or eight (laps) to go and I couldn’t go anywhere, burned the tires off or something. I just didn’t have enough at the end,” Kent said. Meanwhile, the two truck features were won by Jamie Vernaus and George Bulcan. Hank Berry won the first of two mod features. The Beeter brothers won a hobby feature apiece on the weekend. “We choose to race hobby stocks because we can race it together. We want to race together because we have fun. We respect each other, we work on each other’s cars and we have a blast,” Brandon said. →

www.estevanmercury.ca ← Aaron Turnbull built on his Fast 40 win with another checkered flag on June 28, the beginning of a hot streak that would pay some serious dividends later in the season. Turnbull grabbed the lead less than five laps in and never gave it up on the first night of the Can-Am Shootout, held in conjunction with Williston Basin Speedway. Lindsey Wagner earned her first career stock victory in about seven years of racing against her brothers, Brendon and Sterling LaBatte. “(Brendon) couldn’t make it tonight, I was hoping to beat him, too, but I’ll take (beating Sterling) for tonight,” Wagner said. Brad King earned his first hobby stock win of the year, although he races with the Beeters, so the title stayed in their garage. Originally from Alaska, now working in the oilfield in North Dakota and nicknamed the Alaskan Squirrel, King said it meant a lot to run with the Beeters. “The Beeters are so tough this year. They kinda took me under their wing, and they’ve made this possible for me to be up front. I’ve really enjoyed their company, and I couldn’t have run across any better guys than those two.” Turnbull continued his hot stretch on July 8, winning the Estevan stop on the annual Dakota Classic Modified Tour. Although he had challenged for the tour championship before, it was his first tour stop victory. Turnbull started on the first row and never gave up the lead. “It’s just so tough to win against that field. There are guys that have won national championships, and it’s some of the toughest competition we ever run against. It means a lot to be able to hold them off,” he said. Perennial contender Rocky Alexander picked up his first win in the stock class after a slow start to the year. “We’ve had nothing but grief with the car, a new car, trying to set it up and everything. We decided (Monday) wasn’t a points night, so we’d go back to what we know. We changed things and went back to what we used to run,” said the threetime defending champion at that point. Brock Beeter edged out Brandon in a stock car feature that counted in the season points. Even after the Estevan win, Turnbull sat nine points behind tour leader Allen Kent leading into night four in Williston. However, he erased that deficit quickly, winning in Williston while Kent finished 14th, putting the local driver ahead by four points.

(Photo by Byron Fichter Fotography) Turnbull followed that up with a fourth-place finish in Dickinson and second on the final night in Mandan to wrap up a comfortable victory, taking the tour championship by 14 points. “It’s kinda unbelievable. The guys that have won it are pretty elite drivers. Some of the best guys in the country have won it, and I’ve never really considered myself one of those guys. It’s pretty crazy,” he said. “(Consistency) is very important. That one night that I finished 14th, most guys had one or two nights like that or even worse. I stayed pretty consistent the

whole week.” Emmel won his second career feature on July 20, surviving a handful of significant crashes on the track and some rough conditions. With two massive storms in the previous week, it was a tumultuous night of racing. “When you race hard in the holes, it’ll upset the car a lot. I got just about sideways the one time there and I just drove my line. I lost my brakes, I had no brakes, so I just had to baby it in there kinda, and try and do some pumping down the straightaway and get my brakes up,” Emmel said.

RT8 May 28, 2014 ← Turnbull was back to his winning ways 10 days later, taking the lead early and holding on till the end. It was his fourth win in the previous five events at the Speedway. “I just had to be patient and kinda let the race come to me. My car was working so good, I knew it was just a matter of time till I got to the front,” he said. The show featured a visit from the WISSOTAlate models, with 13 drivers running in the category. Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wisc., was the winner. Geoff Mann captured his first stock car win of the season, holding off Alexander, among others. Brandon Beeter returned to victory lane in the hobbies with a late pass on King, who appeared to be taken out by contact. Aaron Turnbull needed to finish at least five spots ahead of his dad to win the mod championship, and he came off the track believing he’d come up short, despite finishing second. “When I came in second, I thought he’d be in the top five and he’d still have it locked up. Kody Scholpp won the feature. “Winning the (modified) tour and the Estevan tour race and the $3,000 (Fast 40) and all the features that I won, it’s definitely been my best year

so far,” Turnbull reflected. Meanwhile, Gregg Mann entered the stock feature with an insurmountable 29-point lead, but put the pedal to the metal anyway and won the race to put an exclamation point on his track championship. “I was getting the gears from my parents, (telling) me I was just going to go out there and hang out at the back and just finish the race, and I said, ‘No, that’s not the way you go out,’” Mann laughed. Brandon Beeter was crowned the hobby champion. He led Brock by four points coming in. King hung on for the feature win, edging Brandon by a nose, while Brock finished third. Although the points races ended in August, there was plenty of action in September for fans, with the always popular Eve of Destruction and enduro race packing the stands to close out the year.

Late models coming to town more often Last year they experimented with a sport modified class. This year, enter the late models. Local racing fans will have six chances to see late models in action at Estevan Motor Speedway this year. After hosting the class on average once a season in recent years, the Speedway has decided to bring them in on a semi-regular basis. “We wanted to give the crowd some variety. Our late model shows always seem to be a crowd favourite, so we want to see if they respond to having them more often,” said Speedway marketing director Tracy Lewis-Miller. The 2014 schedule will see five dates for W I S S O TA - s a n c t i o n e d cars, including the season opener on May 17, as well as the Blaine Brothers Late Model Challenge Series on July 28. “I’ve always wanted to run one again, but there’s never been any tracks close

I was pretty happy about that. Maybe we can get a few more and build a class out of it.” The late model cham-

They’re fast, they’re clean, they put on a great show. They’re very personable with anyone who wants to come talk to them and ask questions. I think the late models are a great addition to our show,” said LewisMiller. She said there are three or four locals who will enter the class, and drivers will also come from Winnipeg, North Dakota and Minnesota, making for up to a dozen competitors. As for the sport mods, EMS attracted less than 10 drivers for their race nights last year, so they will only make one appearance in Estevan this season, coming on championship night Aug. 23. “It’s a great starter class, and it’s an awesome class for guys who think they might want to run a mod, but just aren’t that competitive or good at it yet. However, we’ve found they just don’t travel in this area,” Lewis-Miller said of the sport mods. There are a few other changes at the track this year. There will be no Fast 40 feature, a staple of the schedule the last few years. However, there will be a $5,000 special on Sept. 20, after the points race ends. It will see $3,000 awarded to the mod winner, $1,300 to the stock winner and $700 to the hobby champion. “It’s a sponsor that came forward and he loves racing and wanted to put this on.” Lewis-Miller added she would like to book one more special event before the Eve of Destruction on Sept. 12. Meanwhile, the track is working on some other matters. The hospitality area has expanded, as has the pit area, which now stretches to a nearby creek to allow for more haulers. A new sound system has been installed and there are also some capital projects in the works, including a new wheelchairaccessible seating area that could be ready sometime this year.

EDRA moving into fundraising stage The wheels have been moving slowly for a few years, but they are beginning to move a little faster. The Estevan Drag Racing Association’s quest for a new track facility took some major steps forward last year, as the group learned more about the financial cost and planned out four stages of development. They also signed a contract with the International Hot Rod Association to become its 106th track as part of Division 6. That will make them the ninth Canadian track to be sanctioned under the umbrella of the IHRA, which is the second-largest drag racing governing body in North America. Now the drag racing association is putting together a fundraising package to raise money for the facility. Last year, it was estimated it would cost about $3.6 million to build, including just under $1.5 million to lay down

fundraising package complete yet, but we have some things we’ll be doing. We’re selling the track an inch at a time so everybody can participate in having a part of this.”

Krahn said it’s too early to target a specific year for completing the new facility, as the track will be laid down in one piece and the funds have to be raised before that can happen. “We’ve done a lot of preliminary stuff. Lots of planning and engineering has gone into this. We’ve done a lot of leg work with the bigger contractors, because that’s where we have to start, and they’re 100 per cent receptive to it,” he added. For now, local drag racers will continue to rip

out at the Estevan Municipal Airport. There will again be three race days this summer. The slate begins on June 15 with the association’s season opener. It continues on July 27 with the fourth annual Dennis Neelin Memorial Race. This event is in memory of Dennis Neelin, a late drag racer from Carlyle. Neelin’s family presents an award each year to an individual who demonstrates a dedication to the sport, whether it be a racer, crew member, volunteer or sponsor.

Krahn said he is happy with the way the memorial race has become a staple of the EDRA schedule. The season finale will be held on Aug. 24 as part of Pure Energy Weekend. The popular weekend is a tribute to the local racing scene and also includes a car show on Fourth Street on Aug. 23. In recent years, the EDRA has had a special guest for the show and shine and season finale. Krahn said they are still working on something for that program, possibly a promotion with the airport.

Southeast motocross season underway

There has been a change at the top, but other than that, it’s business as usual for Trackside MX Park in Estevan. With the departure of former president Chris Istace to British Columbia, Bryce Friess has stepped into that role. Friess was previously the vice president at Trackside. Still, it’s a crew of about half a dozen people, supported by many others, that keeps the track running. “The biggest problem, the same with every club around, is we’ve got 80 or 90 members, but there’s only a handful that are really involved in it,” said longtime rider and member Randy Franke. “Chris was definitely one of the main guys. We’ve got another guy who stepped up and took over where Chris left off.” There are some changes to the track for this year’s Southeast Corner Racing Circuit schedule. “We made a couple of bigger jumps, a couple of combination jumps where there’s different rhythms to do, where the less experienced riders can do the smaller parts of it. The more experienced guys can do a quad and less experienced guys can do a double,” Franke said. “Everything’s pretty much running the same as it has.”

A rider kicks up some dirt after crossing the finish line during a race program at Trackside MX Park last year. In recent years, the SCRC has had a stop in Estevan to coincide with Pure Energy Weekend, an annual celebration of the local racing scene in August. Last year, the two Estevan dates were in August and September. This year, the August program was moved up to

May 10. Franke said that while Trackside wants to support the growth of Pure Energy Weekend, it does pose some challenges. “We always try to stick with that August Pure Energy Weekend, but we found over the last few years, with the

track being so dry in August, it’s tough. We really have to get out there watering all week long. It was hard to get help out there because there were so many other things that weekend. When it was

just racing that weekend, it was okay, but now there’s football and so many things that we didn’t have anybody helping anymore. We were kind of shooting ourselves in the foot. “September is a more open month as far as other circuits that can come, the ones in northern Saskatchewan and North Dakota, and Manitoba, too. That’s why we have three or four races in September.” The races held earlier this month represented a strong start to the SCRC calendar, with 139 entries. “It worked out really good for us because the track was in really good condition for this early one. We got lucky with the weather, it held up. It was a little windy. “We had a really good

turnout of riders. There were a few minor crashes, but no real injuries. The first race of the year, you always take a little breath and hope nothing happens because some guys aren’t in racing shape yet.” Franke said he is hoping to see more spectators this year and offered a reminder that race days aren’t the only time the track is busy. “Guys are out practicing a lot, so even if people want to stop out at the track during the week and see what it’s about and talk with them.” Franke said there are about a dozen new riders in the younger age groups this year. He said that’s good to see because other than the main families involved, “there haven’t been many new, younger kids getting into it.”
