THE RACE TRACKER 2011
Defending champs look to mark their turf again Last year ’s season champions at Estevan Motor Speedway earned their hardware in different ways. Tyson Turnbull took advantage of his brother’s misfortune by cleaning up in the modified races on Championship Night. Dana Brandt dominated the hobby stocks from start to finish unlike anything seen yet at EMS. Rocky Alexander stayed within striking distance for most of the year in the street stocks and pounced at the end. All three were firsttime champions at the Speedway. No matter how they did it, all three drivers will have targets on their back ends this year.
And the competition should be wide open in each race class, although if Brandt drives like he did last year, he could build a significant points lead quickly. Turnbull’s feature win in the last race of 2010 was his first victory of the year, and his focus is on winning more this season. “I hadn’t won a race in a few years and I really wanted to win one. It was quite the night,” he recalled. Turnbull said his goal is “just to win races. I never really deal with the points.” This year he’ll be aiming for checkered flags behind the wheel of a new car. He said it’s more or less the same as his old No. 10, but it was time for a change.
Rocky Alexander (streets), Tyson Turnbull (modifieds) and Dana Brandt (hobbies) all hope this photo of their 2010 championship trophies is taken again at the end of this season.

“I put in lot of nights on that old car,” he said. The new drive does have a little more horsepower, though. “Once I get used to it, I’ll be pretty well one of the fastest guys there.” Among the challengers Turnbull will battle is his older brother, Aaron, who led the mod standings for most of last season before
being disqualified during an Aug. 16 heat. “He’ll be tough to beat, he’ll have fresh stuff too, but I think, this car I got, it’ll be one of the best cars out there,” said the younger Turnbull. Other drivers like Jim Harris, Joren Boyce, Les McLenehan and Devin Raynard will also be looking to knock Turnbull off
his perch. Brandt will likely make the hobby stocks a mustwatch again in 2011. Last year, the Minot native came seemingly out of nowhere to win the first eight races of the year and a total of 10, losing only one feature all season. “He’s just a smooth driver,” EMS president James Gustafson said after one of Brandt’s wins last year. “He’s steady on the accelerator and everybody says that he’s a great anticipator. He anticipates all the bumps.” Dallas Rice, Gary Goudy and Austin Daae were among the drivers to challenge Brandt last season and could be the favourites to wrest a few victories out of his grasp in 2011. Alexander has been winning races at EMS for several years, with three under his belt prior to last season. In 2010, he overtook stock car points leader Nathan Burke in August and secured the title by winning the feature on Championship Night, holding off second-place Joe Flory by just six points.

Because they run such a great show and the track is always in good condition to race. Who would You Consider Your Biggest Rival?: All of the Racers from Minot are very good drivers so they would probably be my biggest competition. New day, new look for Speedway in 2011 Estevan Motor Speedway is hoping a new race day will lead to continued growth in 2011 and beyond. The Speedway has moved its regular race dates from Saturday to Wednesday to avoid competing with weekend events and to make life easier for the people who make the races happen. “We’re a volunteerbased organization. To run a race, we need up to 60 volunteers,” said EMS president James Gustafson. “One of the reasons we went to mid-week racing is because the volunteers like their weekends. They’re giving up their free time as it is.” Another reason is

that many potential fans take weekend getaways in the summer, and those who stay in the city have lots of weekend sports vying for their attention. “Other communities have done this. Winnipeg has done it and they’ve found it to be quite successful,” said Gustafson. But he acknowledged that there lies an
inherent risk in this kind of move. “We were always competing with other race tracks (for drivers). When we give up our weekend dates, we may not get them back if we don’t stick with this.” The 2011 slate at EMS features 12 events, including five special race days. Aside from the May 18 season opener, the

New day, new look for Speedway in 2011 Continued from Page 3 NASCAR star Kenny Schrader will race at the Speedway that night after his friend and fellow driver Kenny Wallace did the same in 2009 and 2010. “Because of the tour, we get guys who will come from a long distance. They’re calling and registering already,” said Gustafson. The other tour stops this year are July 10 in Minot, July 12 in Williston, July 13-14 in Dickinson and July 15 in Mandan. The Auto Value Fast 40 will be held two days before the Estevan stop, on July 9. The modified feature will pay $3,000 to the winner, $2,000 for second place and $1,000 for third. Auto Electric is the local sponsor for that race. Another highlight will come July 26 when the Speedway hosts the All-Star Sprint Series, an out-
law sprint car circuit that runs races each year across the eastern United States and the midwest. The series features winged sprint cars with up to 850 horsepower. Of the tour’s 55 dates this year, Estevan is one of two in Canada, the other being in Winnipeg. A late model feature will go ahead Aug. 16, and the 2011 season will wrap up Sept. 25 with an enduro race, always a crowd-pleaser. The Speedway is being resurfaced this year with harder clay to shore up some soft spots in the corners and ensure the threeeighth-mile track can withstand the

pounding it takes over the course of a season. “Once that’s done, we feel it’ll be in very good shape,” Gustafson said earlier this month. “Because of the horsepower of these cars now, you gotta have a good, hard surface and ours wasn’t that way.” The resurfacing was slated to be done on the May 14 weekend. Gustafson added that the track was not affected by this year’s spring flooding and the snow was removed from the track early in order to avoid damage. The Speedway has also in-
stalled five prefabricated VIP boxes this year. “Two of them are for the people who put them up, and the other three are for us,” said Gustafson. One of those three will be for race day sponsors and a decision has not been made on the other two. One possibility is that they will be opened up to anyone for an additional fee on top of the regular admission. Finally, the Speedway has hired Tracy Lewis-Miller as their marketing manager. “She has hit the ground running,” Gustafson said.

2010 Highlights
THE RACE TRACKER 2011
The 2010 season at Estevan Motor Speedway featured plenty of racing excitement and several firsts. Here are some of the highlights from last year’s action: NOTABLE Two race nights in May, the May 1 season opener and another card on May 29, had to be cancelled due to poor weather. *** Aaron Turnbull took over sole possession of the all-time EMS lead in mod wins with 17 by winning the first feature of the season on May 15. Turnbull also took his heat and the trophy dash. *** Turnbull Racing finished one-two-three on June 5, with Aaron winning his second straight race, followed by brother Tyson and dad Ed. *** Jay Noteboom won the $3,000 to win modified feature on July 10 for his third career victory at Estevan. *** Brian Mullen of Seymour, Wisc., won the Estevan stop on the Dakota Classic Modified Tour July 12 in his first year driving on the tour. Mullen had taken sixth in the $3,000 to win feature two days earlier.
*** Aaron Turnbull, considered a virtual lock for the season modified points title, was disqualified during an Aug. 16 heat and fell to fifth in the standings with one race remaining. His brother Tyson would go on to capture the mod title. *** Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wisc., won the Northern Late Model Racing Association special feature with relative ease on Aug. 16. Doar started from the pole and led all 30 laps. *** Dana Brandt of Minot tore up the hobby stock ranks, winning 10 of 11 hobby features at Estevan, including the first eight of the year. In the process, Brandt shattered the previous EMS track records for consecutive hobby wins (three) and most wins in a season (four). He also took over the all-time lead in EMS hobby wins, surpassing Daryle Runge and Davin Emmel (eight). *** Tyson Turnbull entered Championship Night on Sept. 18 with only a three-point lead over Joren Boyce in the mod standings, but he quickly took care of that by winning his first feature of the year, along with his heat and trophy dash. Turnbull dedicated the win to his friend, Tyler Fedyk, who had been killed in an
ATV accident two weeks earlier. *** Brandt (hobby stock) and Rocky Alexander (stock car) also won their final race of the year as well as their respective points titles. Both were first-time EMS champions. *** Rookie of the year honours went to Travis Hagen (modified), Tanner Matthewson (stock car) and Gary Goudy (hobby stock). Jim Harris received the Clint Prette Memorial Award for most sportsmanlike driver. QUOTABLE “I got up to second behind my dad (Ed) there … and I thought Eddy had her in the bag, then the caution came out with five laps to go and I kind of got lucky I guess.” –Aaron Turnbull on passing his dad in an eventual one-two-three Turnbull family finish on June 5. *** “He’s just a smooth driver. He’s steady on the accelerator and everybody says that he’s a great anticipator. He anticipates all the bumps.” – EMS president James Gustafson on Dana Brandt, who terrorized the hobby stock ranks in 2010. *** “I don’t know what happened out there. All of a sudden (Hank Berry) slowed and then

But we’ll take them any way we can get them.” –Brian Mullen on his victory on Night 2 of the Dakota Classic Modified Tour at EMS. *** “All I had to do was finish the next two races and a little overreaction by an overpowering official basically ended my season.” – Aaron Turnbull on being disqualified during his mod heat Aug. 16 for having his window net come down, which eventually cost him the season title. *** “We’ve been kind of on a roll the last three or four weeks. It looks kind of easy but we’ve struggled for a year. The car just came in, and the track was awesome.” – Pat Doar on winning the NLRA late model feature on Aug. 16. *** “The race win almost means more to me than the championship because I’ve been trying so hard for a couple years just to win races. But it’s definitely cool, I mean me, my dad and my brother all have championships now.” – Tyson Turnbull on winning his first race in 2010 – and the mod season title – on Championship Night.

THE RACE TRACKER 2011
Big names in sprint racing coming to Estevan There’s no doubt that the IMCA Dakota Classic Modified Tour is the biggest draw of each racing season at Estevan Motor Speedway. But another event on this year’s slate figures to pack the bleachers as well. The All-Star Circuit of Champions sprint car series will bring their brand of entertainment to EMS for the first time on July 26. The Estevan stop will be part of a Great Plains tour, which also takes the All-Star drivers to Winnipeg and five other stops in the Dakotas and Iowa. “They just phoned us and inquired if we’d be interested,” said EMS treasurer Tim Fedyk. “We had said if they arranged a tour through the northern parts that we’d absolutely be interested, and they arranged a tour.
“And tours mean cars.” Some of the top drivers on the All-Star tour will be here, and they will be joined by a handful of big names from the World of Outlaws, the top level of sprint racing in the world. Sammy Swindell, a three-time Outlaws champ and one of the most recognizable names in racing, will race that night, along with his 22-year-old son Kevin, who has already met with some success in his young career. Another driver to watch is Kraig Kinser, the son of Outlaws great Steve Kinser and a former Outlaws rookie of the year. Tim Shaffer, who won the golden anniversary edition of the Knoxville Nationals last year and currently sits

second in the All-Star points standings, will be another threat. And you can’t count out Danny Lasoski, a veteran Outlaws driver and three-time Knoxville Nationals winner. Don’t be surprised if none of these stars take the checkered flag, though; the All-Star cir-
cuit is renowned for having many unique race winners each year. “They’re all good drivers. It’s a circuit that has very high competition,” said Fedyk. Kenny Schrader, who will race at Estevan two weeks before the AllStars and drove sprints early in his career, said
landing the circuit is a coup for EMS. “That’s huge. The all-stars are the second biggest sprint racing group there is,” he said. “They’ve got damn good competitors. Their main guy, Tim Shaffer, went in last year and won the Knoxville Nationals, and they were represented
very well.” Two local drivers will be trying to edge out the sprint stars on their hometown track. Fedyk’s sons, Kyle and Kohlan, are both sprint drivers and they will race at Estevan for the second time. The pair normally race at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, where sprints are a staple. “That’s basically our home track,” said the eldest Fedyk. Sprint cars offer some of the most entertaining action in racing with their high speeds, and the Speedway grounds should be full July 26. “It is the fastest car on dirt. The most exciting dirt racing there is, is sprint racing,” said Fedyk. “That should draw some people out, I sure hope.”

NASCAR great to hit Estevan stop on Dakota mod tour For the third straight year, local racing fans will get to see a NASCAR driver compete in the Estevan stop on the IMCA Dakota Classic Modified Tour. Ve t e r a n d r i v e r Kenny Schrader will race at Estevan Motor Speedway on July 11, when the annual mod tour hits the city. Schrader, 55, is well known for his enjoyment of dirt tracks and the Estevan stop is one of several he will make in the west this year. “We put a whole swing together with some North Dakota tracks and some Montana tracks,” Schrader said earlier this month while travelling to Toledo, Ohio, for a date on the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) Racing Series. “We saw it on the (Dakota mod) schedule and we’re just trying to put a western swing together. petes on the ARCA tour and in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, but he is spending as much time as possible exploring new short tracks, particularly the dirt ones. “As long as you’re driving a lot, it doesn’t really matter what kind of track it is,” he said. “This year we’ve
got three or four in Canada,” Schrader added. “(Estevan) is as far west as we’ve been.” He said he will race at a couple of other stops on the Dakota tour in July, but won’t be able to make all six nights. Although his NASCAR days are starting to wind down,
Schrader has no intentions of getting off the track any time soon. “With the shorttrack racing, I’m going to keep going as long as I can get in the car,” he chuckled. “I’m still having fun with it.” And there are some drivers in these parts waiting to give him a run for his money. “He said he’s going to give it all he’s got to try to win the race. He’s coming with his crew and his car,” said Gustafson. “For guys who have been at the winning end of our track, that adds a little more enthusiasm. We’ve got some good racers here. I think he’s going to have his hands full.” Schrader wants to win at Estevan, but he’s also relishing another trip to the Canadian Prairies. “I’m looking forward to getting up there and seeing more of the oilfield country and meeting some racing fans.”

Planning continues for future drag racing track The process of constructing a new track is moving along for the Estevan Drag Racing Association. EDRA officials are loathe to pinpoint a ball-park date for getting construction started, but an announcement is expected within the next year regarding the status of the new project. The association acquired land northwest of Estevan Motor Speedway last year, on the other side of the railway tracks. “We’re currently in the process of doing a long-term business plan,” said EDRA president Jim Forrest. “We’re liking what we’re seeing … we’re pretty optimistic that we’re going to be making an announcement fairly soon. “We want Estevan to be like the racing capital of Saskatchewan.” Added public rela-
Two very different vehicles line up on the strip at an Estevan Drag Racing Association event in 2010.
tions director Rennie Meek: “If you’re going to sink some money into it, you want to make sure it’s going to be there for a few years.” For now, racers will continue to drag at Estevan Municipal Airport, where the EDRA has been based for the last nine years. The group will again hold three races this year, slated for June 19, July 24 and Aug. 21. The season opener will coincide with
Pure Energy weekend, which also features a car show downtown on June 18. Forrest said the July race will be dedicated to Dennis Neelin, a long-time EDRA drag racer who passed away last year. The association is adding a new street tire class to its four existing classes this year. “This is where the guys that are running on radial treaded tires can come out and they don’t have to race against a
guy that does it every weekend,” said Forrest. The street class was included in the fi nal race of 2010, without much advertising, and officials were surprised by how many cars showed up. “A lot of these cars that are running up and down the streets on a Friday night, bring ’em out to the race track,” he said. “Anybody who comes out and races their street car is hooked. They’re going to be at the next race.”
The other classes are Quick 16, featuring the top 16 cars from time trials, the A side, for cars with slick tires, the motorcycle class and junior dragsters. Each class will have its own sponsor this year. Forrest said draggers have told him Estevan is one of their favourite airport races because “they have more fun here than they do anywhere else because it’s not a big pressure thing.”
The EDRA also does as much as possible to make the events fan-friendly. “We set it up so we try to keep something in front of the fans 100 per cent of the time. As soon as a person’s knocked out of the competition, they’re done for the day, normally,” Forrest said. “(But) we dedicate a lane in our staging lanes for grudge matches, or if they want to have a race against their buddy, they can do that.”

Front section at Trackside MX gets facelift The replay value of Trackside MX just went up. Just like a video gamer who discovers a new level in his favourite title, the riders at Trackside will enjoy a different look to the course this summer. The front section of the track, which is closest to spectators, has been rebuilt with some new jumps and wider lanes to accommodate more bikers. Trackside president Chris Istace said the work was done mostly around Easter. “We rebuilt the whole front section of our track. We moved and widened some sections and made some new jumps. “There should be more air for the spectators; two of the new jumps are right in the front section.” Istace said the redesign was aimed partly at reducing congestion and increasing rider safety, and also at combatting the annual spring onslaught of water. “We made the lanes wider because the races
are bigger now,” he said. “After last year’s wet spring, we built from the drainage areas and retention ponds so the water has somewhere to go off the track.” The South Corner Racing Circuit is running seven dates this year, including two in Estevan. The two Trackside race days are June 11 and Sept. 24, which is the final date of the season and will be immediately followed by an awards banquet. The SCRC season opener is May 28 in Carlyle, with the town hosting a second date on Sept. 17. Oxbow will welcome the circuit on Aug. 6 and Aug. 27, and Weyburn plays host Sept. 10. Entering its sixth year of operation, the SCRC is adding a new 125 Open class this year on a trial basis. The category will be open to any competitor aged 16 and older riding a 125cc bike with a twostroke engine. The circuit will monitor the class to gauge whether there is enough interest to continue it
into 2012. The 125 Open brings the SCRC’s total list of classes to 12. In another change to the circuit for 2011, day riders will no longer have their results counted toward the season points standings. Riders must now buy a series membership to qualify. The Estevan and Oxbow tracks both had starting gates installed last season and Istace said they have added to the excitement for local motocross drivers. “It adds an extra notch of professionalism to the track and the facility.” He added that the SCRC continues to grow in terms of riders and fans, but the priority remains attracting new fans. “The series is based around getting people into it, not around (riders) going there to be the greatest or to be the pros. It’s an opportunity for people to get into racing. “That’s the whole idea, a grassroots race series that promotes the sport and the fun and family aspect of it.”
