Speedway returns to weekend racing

The cast of characters at Estevan Motor Speedway is back for another year. Although not much has changed at the 3/8-mile dirt track, there is one major difference as the circuit has moved its race days back to weekends. The Speedway had moved to Wednesday nights in 2011 in an effort to avoid competing with weekend events and allow volunteers to have their weekends free. Drivers and track officials had been split on the issue at the annual general meeting in November, but many drivers were happy with the change to move back to weekends. “I love it. Wednesday night was brutal for me,” said reigning hobby stock champion Cory Evans. “It’s the middle of the week, you’re going back to

Hopefully we get some of the Minot guys back.” Defending stock champion Rocky Alexander said the new schedule also works better for him. “I think it’s a great idea. It’s a lot easier with my sched-

ule as far as getting to the track on time and having a little bit of extra time before the race to get some last-minute adjustments,” he said. “I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from the fans. I expect our fan count to go up again. I think it’ll be good things for the track.”

Last year’s modified champion, Devin Raynard, added that the weekend races should bring back the social element of the events. “I think we had a good try there last year trying to make the Wednesdays work, but I think Friday and Saturday is going to be a lot better for people to come out and

people don’t have to get back to work the next morning. It’ll be a better atmosphere,” said Raynard. At the AGM, president James Gustafson noted that despite a small increase in attendance and car counts last year, there was a good reason to switch back to weekends. “We felt that maybe some of the social aspect had disappeared,” he said. Despite concerns about competing with the Williston and Dickinson tracks for weekend dates, EMS was able to schedule all of its regular points nights for the weekends. The season opener was set for May 18 after the original date of May 5 was rained out. That race has been rescheduled for Aug. 3. Other key dates are the McComb Automotive Fast 40, which is the $3,000-towin feature, on May 26; the

Estevan stop on the Dakota Classic Modified tour on July 10; and Championship Night on Aug. 25. The track has installed a new leaderboard this year which will display the lap count and the top four cars in the race. EMS is also embracing social media, having created a Twitter account (@ mydirtracetrack), a revamped Facebook page and a new texting club for promotional giveaways and race information. It also gave its website a facelift. The Speedway executive for 2012 includes president James Gustafson, vice-president Dale LaBatte, treasurer Lynn Trobert and secretary Teresa Dumaine. Other executive members are Jim Harris, Geoff Mann, Ed Turnbull, Rod Pickering and Tyson Turnbull.

Defending champs gunning for more wins in 2012 The bar has been set at Estevan Motor Speedway. None of the 2011 season point champions are strangers to the trophy case. Devin Raynard (modified), Rocky Alexander (stock car) and Cory Evans (hobby stock) all won their second career season championship at EMS last year. Though there are certainly other serious contenders in all three classes, Raynard, Alexander and Evans have set a standard of excellence for others to follow. Alexander, who narrowly edged out Robby Rosselli after winning a final race that went right down to the wire last year, said he’s still motivated. “Win another one. That’s always the goal. I’m always trying to drive for the best,” he said. “I expect a big target. There are a lot of guys out there vying to ensure that I don’t win another one, but I’m still going to go out there and do my best.” Alexander won three races last year and had four other top-five finishes, leading to the highest point

It was his second straight season championship. He expects the contenders this year to include Gregg Mann, who won twice last season, Geoff Mann, Austin Daae and the LaBatte family. “I welcome the competition. It’s fantastic,” said Alexander. “I love a nice, clean race and competing right to the bitter end. It’s enjoyable.” Alexander has only made some minor changes to his car. He said he was plan-

ning to do some off-season racing in the U.S. but found a problem with his car a week before leaving. Meanwhile, Raynard’s season is currently in limbo as he had not found a car to drive as of May 10. “I’m running a little behind schedule. I’ve got my boy racing in the hobby stock, so I’ve been concentrating on that. I sold my other car and haven’t got another one yet,” said Raynard. He said he was still looking for one and plans to race this year, but may not be

That’s the rule I guess, but it was a bad one.” Evans also has other priorities at the track, with his daughter Samantha driving a hobby stock car for the second straight year. “I want to see if my girl can win one,” he said. “I’m going to try to set up her car so she can go a little faster.” He said that more than anything, he enjoys the friendly competition at the track. “I really like racing against Jim Mann, Randy Stepp, Tyler Thompson, those guys are pretty consistent racers,” he said. “They do a good job of driving and didn’t run into you unless they meant to. It’s always fun when you have a close race.”

They’re always right up there.” Meanwhile, Evans edged Gary Goudy Jr. and Tyler Thompson in the closest race of the three classes, with a controversial finish. On Championship Night, Thompson was leading late in the race when he was involved in a collision and was sent to the back. “I wish Tyler Thompson would’ve won it last year. He got screwed,” said Evans. “Somebody else was backward on the track and ran onto him on the track and that’s why he got sent back.

EDRA making progress toward new track With the Estevan Drag Racing Association soon to embark on a new season at the Estevan Municipal Airport, the group is also slowly moving forward on their plan to build a new track north of Estevan Motor Speedway. The association has hired Ron Colson of Track Planning Associates to work on a business plan and a construction plan, which are in the final phases. The land for the facility was secured last year. “We’re in the planning stages of funding and accessing community support and the support of the local businesses and the bigger businesses that are in town,” said EDRA president Jim Forrest. “Estevan’s a booming economy now and certainly the time is right to do this. It’s going to give people one more venue of entertainment.” Forrest said he hopes the new track will be a jewel that the city will be proud of. “We’re moving forward with this and hopefully we’re going to have a really nice facility that’s going to do well for Estevan. Estevan is a racing town; all you have to do is look to our friends at the

The owner of Dennis Neelin’s car makes a pass at the Dennis Neelin Memorial Race last year. Neelin was a drag racer from Carlyle who passed away two years ago. Motor Speedway and what a tremendous job they’ve done over there. “I think we can put in a facility that will also make people proud to be a part of.” The association is not disclosing when the track is expected to be completed. There are again three scheduled race days this year, coming on June 24, July 15 and Aug. 26. The July 15 event is the second annual Dennis Neelin Memorial Race, in tribute of Carlyle racer Dennis Neelin, who passed away two years ago. Last year, the owner of Neelin’s car brought it down and made a pass.

This year, Neelin’s family has put up a trophy for “someone that has the dedication to the sport of drag racing in the same vein as Dennis had,” said Forrest. “It’s beautiful, about 15-pound crystal with Dennis’s car three-dimensionally engraved on the side.” Members of the track will nominate people, but the family will make the selection. “I’m really looking forward to that. I think that’s a good thing. That’s something Dennis would be real proud of. I’m hoping we get a ton of cars out there for his race,” said Forrest. The season finale on

Aug. 26 is part of Pure Energy Weekend in Estevan, which sees all three racing groups hold events. It also included a car show on 4th Street last year and the

hope is to do the same this summer. The EDRA is bringing in an act by Nitro Mike Kunz for that weekend. He has a 2004 PT Cruiser that can stand up on its back tires for the length of the track. “Lots of smoke, fire and flames, the kids love it, people love it. I’ve seen it. He puts on a tremendous show,” said Forrest. The car will be downtown at the car show on Saturday and at the EDRA races on Sunday. The association is again going with five classes this year: Quick 16, the A event, street tire, motorcycles and junior dragster. The street tire class was introduced last year and has

been a big hit. “Our street tire class has just turned into a real great thing. There are a lot of people bringing their street cars out and it’s all bracket racing, so you don’t have to be the fastest to win,” said Forrest. “It’s a lot of fun. Anybody who’s come out has never come just once, they always come back and do it again. I think it’s a real positive thing. It gives people a place to run their car without fear of being in an accident in town here or hitting somebody or being in trouble with the law. “We’re real optimistic that things are progressing and there’s a lot of interest in drag racing in Estevan.”

Time to get back to the track Putting together the RaceTracker is a timeconsuming project, and in the process one relives the action that took place last year at Estevan Motor Speedway as well as Trackside MX and the drag races. Every new season is an opportunity for a different driver to get into the EMS record book or into the memories of passionate racing fans. Last year was my first season covering the Speedway, and I remember going to the first race night not being totally sure what to expect. I had gotten familiar with a lot of the names at the track from working on the RaceTracker, but ya gotta see it live to realize the spectacle that lives down on the Shand

Josh Lewis Hear Me Out access road. The officials and drivers were more than welcoming and went out of their way to help if I had questions or needed some information, so it didn’t take long for me to become immersed in the goings-on at EMS. Whether you’re sitting up in the stands or standing at the fence taking pictures and getting covered by dirt from head to toe, going to the track is a thrill on any given race night. Who could forget the tear Aaron Turnbull went on in July and August, winning four of five races and finish-

ing fourth on the mod tour? Or how about the stock and hobby races that went down to the wire, with Rocky Alexander surging past Robby Rosselli and Cory Evans edging Tyler Thompson? We also saw Tyler Wagner win his first feature in 10 years of racing at the track early in the year. Then there was the appearance of Kenny Schrader at the Estevan mod tour stop, and the tale of redemption written by Jay Noteboom, who won that race two days after being overtaken by Devin Raynard at the end of the Auto Value Fast 40. And there was a great moment at the track’s awards banquet, when a clearly humbled Rod Pickering was given the Clint Prette Memo-

rial Award for commitment, loyalty and sportsmanship. That’s what grassroots racing is all about. There should be many more exciting moments this year. Turnbull will be looking to avenge last year’s points loss, not to mention his brother Tyson, who won the championship two years ago and was fourth last year. Other drivers like Joren Boyce, Mike Hagen, Ed

Turnbull, Jim Harris and Les McLenehan are also consistent threats. In the streets, Alexander has a big target on his back, but don’t forget that Rosselli was only a matter of laps from winning last year before being passed by Alexander in the last race. Gregg Mann was also a major contender last year and surely some other names will challenge. The hobby class may be the most wide open of them all, especially with so much movement each year as some move up to the street stocks

and other new drivers start in the hobby class. Gary Goudy, Jr., and Thompson were both within eight points of Evans last year, and Justin Medler and Dustin Byler also spent their share of time at the front. Josh Lewis can be reached by phone at 6342654, by e-mail at sports@ estevanmercury.ca, on Twitter at twitter.com/joshlewis306 or on his Bruins Banter blog at estevanmercury.ca/ bruinsbanter. Bruins’ coach getting behind the wheel Racing has been a lifelong interest for Keith Cassidy and now he’s climbing inside a car for the first time. The Estevan Bruins’ head coach and general manager will be driving a hobby stock car at Estevan Motor Speedway this year. “I was just wandering around the Bruin office and happened to mention that last year, I was at quite a few races and figured if I was going to be out there this much, I may as well be driving,” Cassidy recounted. Highlights from the 2011 season The 2011 season had its share of exciting moments to add to the lore of Estevan Motor Speedway. Here are some of the highlights from last year’s action at the track: NOTABLE Devin Raynard gave fans a sign of things to come by leading wire-to-wire in the first modified feature of the season on May 18. Raynard held off Aaron, Tyson and Ed Turnbull for the victory. Rocky Alexander won the stock car feature and Justin Medler was victorious in the hobby stock class. *** On the second race night of the year on June 8, three drivers in particular were dominant as Joe Galloway (mod), Gregg Mann (stock car) and Medler (hobby stock) all won the Triple Crown in their classes, claiming the feature, heat and trophy dash. *** Bienfait’s Tyler Wagner won his first mod feature in 10 years of racing at the Speedway on June 15 after starting in 15th and holding off several drivers for the victory. *** Aaron Turnbull edged brother Tyson for his first mod win of the season on June 29, beginning a redhot stretch that no mod driver would match all year. Starting that night, Turnbull would win four of the next five points races down the stretch to close a seemingly insurmountable gap behind points leader Raynard. Turnbull also tied for fourth on the Dakota Classic Modified Tour despite not racing one of the nights. *** In the Auto Value Fast 40 on July 9, Raynard continued his torrid pace by overtaking Jay Noteboom after a caution with five laps to go to win the $3,000-towin feature. Austin Daae was the stock car winner and Cory Evans won the hobby feature. *** Noteboom got his revenge two nights later, taking the lead off a caution with 11 laps left to win the Estevan stop on the Dakota Classic Modified Tour. Noteboom, a native of Hinton, Iowa, had been battling Will Brack of Mead, Colo., prior to the caution before taking the lead for good. Aaron Turnbull fin-

Allen Kent (stock car) and Dustin Byler (hobby stock) were the other feature winners. *** Another highlight of the mod tour stop was the presence of NASCAR great Kenny Schrader, who ran his third IMCA race of the year. Schrader began the mod feature in sixth and worked his way up to second behind Noteboom before a mechanical problem took him out of the race. *** Championship Night was a memorable one for the Speedway for a number of reasons. The wrap-up races coincided with the Kraft Celebration Tour’s visit to Estevan. TSN anchors Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole made an appearance at the intermission of the races and O’Toole had taken Gregg Mann’s stock car for a spin earlier in the day, footage that would be shown on the live downtown SportsCentre broadcast the next day. *** In the actual racing, it was Devin Raynard, Rocky Alexander and Cory Evans who emerged as track champions for the season. The mod feature was won by Corey Mann. Raynard had the title locked up before the feature began as he sat 20 points ahead of Aaron Turnbull and there were only 16 drivers in the feature. Alexander had a small five-point lead over Robby Rosselli at the start of the stock car feature and trailed Rosselli early in the race, but he eventually passed him to win the race and the championship. There was a controversial finish in the hobby feature. Evans and Tyler Thompson had been jockeying in the standings for a few weeks, with Evans leading by two points going into the

feature. The two played cat and mouse throughout the feature until Thompson was sent to the back after a late collision. Medler went on to win the race. *** The Eve of Destruction event put on by former EMS driver Davin Emmel attracted a capacity crowd of over 2,000 people to the track on Sept. 16. Estevan’s Ryan Berg was the last man standing in a combine demolition derby. *** The Speedway held its annual awards banquet on Oct. 29. Ryan Harris (modified), Samantha Evans (stock car) and Austin Daae (hobby stock) were named the track’s rookies of the year. The Clint Prette Memorial Award, which rewards commitment, loyalty and sportsmanship, was given to first-year hobby driver Rod Pickering. RT10⇢

Many Memorable Moments at Speedway in 2011 QUOTABLE

“Early in the feature when Robby got by me, I thought, ‘This is how it’s going to end up,’ and then I thought to myself, ‘No, that’s not the way to end this season.’” — Rocky Alexander on edging Robby Rosselli for the street stock feature win and the season points crown on Championship Night.

⇠RT9 “I didn’t know who was all back there, but I got a surprise when I pulled up into victory lane to see all three Turnbulls.” — Devin Raynard after winning the season opener May 18 by edging Aaron, Tyson and Ed Turnbull. “It’s a sweet thing. It took 10 years to finally get it and it feels really good.” — Tyler Wagner on winning his first mod feature ever at the Speedway on June 15. “It was a long feature race. I was biding my time and slowly working up there, but I couldn’t have done it without that last caution. Whew, I can’t even catch my breath.” —Raynard on his come-from-behind win in the Auto Value Fast 40 on July 9. “That makes up for not

I love this track.” — Jay Noteboom after winning the Estevan stop on the Dakota Classic Modified Tour, two nights after being overtaken by Raynard late in the Fast 40. “They were doing some extensive dirt work when we got here, and to look at the amount of equipment they got here and the

different people from the community who had come out and donated time and equipment to work on the track is really refreshing. You can tell it’s a pretty new facility and a lot of thought was put into it. They’re doing stuff right.” — NASCAR driver Kenny Schrader prior to racing on the Estevan stop of the Dakota Classic Modified Tour on July 11.

Trackside MX ready for new season With the 2012 motocross season at Trackside MX Park fast approaching, riders will be clocked in a new way this year. The Estevan track has invested in a new electronic lap counter scoring system, which will be used rather than having volunteers count laps manually. “It’s a transponder, basically,” said Trackside president Chris Istace. “Each individual bike will be tracked and lap times will be recorded.” The job of volunteers won’t get any easier, though,

as someone still needs to run the system. “It’s more for us to do, but we’re getting it done,” said Istace. Meanwhile, Trackside enters its second season with a newly designed track after redoing some sections last year. Istace said the executive is now working on fine-tuning the design and running proper irrigation for the new layout. He said the feedback was very positive after last year’s changes. “Everyone loved it. It’s one of the most challenging

tracks on the circuit for sure. Each track on the series is quite unique and offers something different,” he said. Those tracks again this year are Oxbow, Carlyle and Weyburn. The Southeast Corner Racing Circuit, which runs the races at the four tracks, has changed its membership structure. Instead of having memberships for each individual track, the circuit is now offering a regional membership, which gives a member of one track access to all of them.

Shaun Johnson

Driver Age: 28 City: Lampman, SK Car Name: S345 Class: Street Model: 1982 GMC S15 Sponsors: My wallet. Crew: Shaun Johnson, Dale Johnson, Sarah Smyth Dragging: 3 years Favorite: Not Willy Forrest Why: I think he might be an alien. Anyone that can cut a light like that can’t be human. Goals: Not break anything. I know if won’t happen, but you have to stive for something, right? Highlight of Season: Winning the first street class event held by EDRA Right or Left Lane: Either, real men aren’t picky. Who: Anyone with a Mustang or Camaro that is not Drew Young or Troy Turner, because they cheat. I only race on the track because only stupid people race on the streets.

“We don’t offer just a single track membership anymore, we’ve changed to a regional one to help out all the tracks,” said Istace. At Trackside, Istace is expecting a jump of 10-20 per cent in entries. “We’re really pulling a lot away from the provincial series. There’s a little bit of a conflict there because everybody really likes the package we offer with the SCRC,” he said, noting that the circuit focuses on keeping the “hockey

mom mentality” out of it. “It’s laid back and we try to keep it a family setting,” he said. “People are drawn to that.” To that end, the track is hoping to attract more younger riders, particularly those under the age of 10 in the 50cc and 65cc classes. “We’re really hoping that with more people coming to the community, we get a few of the younger riders, because that’s what we really like is to see the new people out there,”

said Istace. After last year’s flooding wiped out an entire valley section of the track, the executive has taken measures to ensure it doesn’t happen again. “We built collection dugouts in the front section,” said Istace. “Last year they saved us for when it does rain. The water slopes into those.” The SCRC will touch down in Estevan for race days onAug. 25 and Sept. 29, which is the season finale.
