Nicole Elliott
Nicole Elliott is the newest female police officer to join the Estevan Police Service. Her personable attitude and unique way of relating to the public has placed her in the hearts of many members in the community. Elliott said that although policing was her initial desire and career choice, she wasn’t just ready to jump into it straight out of high school. She was 29 when she finally decided she was ready to join the force and could not be more thrilled about her decision. Elliott describes her work environment as comfortable and supportive. Q. How old are you? A. I’m 32. Q. Did you live in Estevan your entire life? A. I was born and raised here. Right after high school graduation I moved to Regina to go to school and I was working in Regina as a dental assistant for five years and then moved back home. Q. What got you interested in joining the Estevan police force? A. Being a member was something I wanted to do throughout school, but of course when you get to high school and you get to graduation, and you’re seriously looking into what you want to do for a career, I thought that would have been a bit much for me at the age I was at. Dental was another career I wanted to do, and when I moved back here, I was 29-years-old and I thought it was time.

It’s a job that you don’t know what’s really coming at you one day to the next, and that to me is exhilarating but scary. It’s scary for me because in the evenings you’re dealing with people a lot bigger than you are, and you have no idea what kind of skills they have, so you really have to stop and think in each situation how to address what’s happening and how to make it right.
Money Problems?
Q. What are your job responsibilities? A. General patrol, traffic. Right now we have a blitz coming up where we organize members from multiple agencies outside of Estevan and set up blitzs, conducting interviews, taking statements and conducting general investigations. Q. What is one of the biggest issues facing the city right now? A. We still have a lot of drugs out there. Our Major Crimes Unit is going a fantastic job trying to get that settled, of course it’s still coming in. It’s been a battle for quite a while, but we are all doing the best we

Rose Ditaranto Estevan Mercury Reporter
It’s events like the Torquay quilt show, a church concert or the multicultural potluck dinner that gives a city like Estevan that sense of community. Since my arrival I have ventured throughout the city and attended many small, but very powerful events. At each venue I met amazing locals and others from surrounding areas that have touched my heart with their kind words and gestures. It was through these enchanting individuals that I’ve learned the true meaning of living in a small city where everybody probably knows your name; in my case, they usually do. It was like a co-worker had told me - if you lose your purse, the repairman will return it because he remembers you. Slowly but surely I am growing accustomed to having most of the residents recognize me. At first I will admit I was a little taken back by the kindness, only because where I am from it doesn’t really exist. Usually if someone approaches you in the street they either want money, food or drugs. I am growing into appreciating the benefits of Estevan and what a smaller city can do for one’s mental and physical health. I no longer worry if my car doors are locked and I often fall asleep not knowing whether or not I have locked the front door. It’s just the fact that I am not scared. Coming from a big city you would not think twice to lock your door; as a matter of fact, you would use a dead bolt. I am no longer threatened by the unknown because, quite frankly, there isn’t much one shouldn’t know about Estevan. I do realize, however, that every city, big or small, has it’s own set of issues, but I find if you keep to yourself and do not mingle in another’s quarrel then you are more than likely not going to become a target. So now I sit back in my living room and turn on my TV, and finally I feel at home.
This week the Trader takes readers back to the summer of 1976. Motor camping proved to be not only a fun way to spend the holidays, but also a time when cookouts were seen as the most economical and nutritious way to prepare meals. You hear that Estevan? So what are you waiting for? Bust out the BBQ’s and start grilling, after all it’s good for your health. Each week the Southeast Trader Express tells us what has happened recently, but we'll also give you a look in to the distant past. If you have a photo you'd think the readers of the Southeast Trader Express would find interesting please submit it to Rose Ditaranto at: rditaranto@estevanmercury.ca

Trap shooting champion says he is challenged by the sport by Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury Gerald Smith moved to Estevan from Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan 20 years ago to work in the oil field, and about two and a half years ago he decided to engage in the sport of trap shooting. “ I just went out to the Estevan event one year, tried it, and really liked it,” said Smith. Smith said the sport is extremely challenging and highly competitive, however, he quite enjoys it. “The sport is very challenging, you got to have more mental strength than physical. It’s just pure concentration and visual on the targets.” This year the national trap shooting title went to Smith, and was his first ever title. “It’s the event of the last day of everybody competing. It’s the Handicap Championship: each shooter moves back the better they are, and I got a 97, which is the top score,” described Smith. A shooter is required to shoot at targets that are thrown out of what looks like a treasure chest. Targets are usually clay pigeons about five inches in diameter said Smith. This year the championship took place in Richmond, Vancouver. Location varies from year to year said Smith. “Each year it’s different, from Calgary to Edmonton to Ontario.” While each location
changes, Smith said travel costs are not fully covered. However, Saskatchewan offers it’s competitors the best deal. “The Saskatchewan one is one of the better ones because our clubs out of Saskatchewan do get travel grants,” he said. The tournament is held once a year at the end of June and runs into the beginning of July and the overall winner in each of the five categories is awarded a trophy and reigns as the champion for one full year. Smith said he is unsure if he will be able to reclaim his title next year because of the sheer difficulty of the sport, but said he will try his absolute best.

Regina Police on lookout for man suspected of raping a 22-year-old Regina woman PROVINCIAL The community of Radville and area got hit with yet another storm, as if the weather that has been plaguing the southeast isn’t enough. Apowerful storm ripped through he town of Radville and neighbouring farms Monday night. Residents experienced flooded basements, hail-dented vehicles and outbuildings, downed trees and powerlines, and at least one tornado that touched down for a few moments. Although it did not create any major damage, Environment Canada confirmed that a tornado had touched down south of Radville for only two or three minutes between 8:15 and 8:30 p.m. ••• The Regina Police Service is seeking the public’s help in tracking down the suspect who allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted a 22-year-old Regina woman last month. Police got wind of the incident when Virden, Manitoba RCMP received a 9-1-1 call on June 18. The caller reported that a woman had come to a tourist information centre near the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border and said she had been sexually assaulted. Police noted that the woman had injuries that were consistent with a physical assault. After RCMP investigated the incident, they found
that the woman had left a Regina nightclub on the 1000 block of Park Street at about 2:30 a.m. and was offered a ride by a man in a semi truck who was believed to have left the club minutes after her. Although the woman was hesitant the suspect persuaded her to go with him. Police say the suspect drove to an unknown location where he allegedly physically and sexually assaulted the woman. NATIONAL Bret McCann hasn’t given up hope and expressed his perseverance at an RCMP news conference where he addressed his missing parents, telling them he hadn’t given up and was still looking for them. It has been over a week that McCann’s parents’motor home was discovered on fire just west of Edmonton. Police said that the mysterious disappearance of Lyle McCann, 78, and his wife Marie, 77, “is “extremely suspicious.” Their motorhome was found engulfed in flames in a remote wooded area near Edson, Alberta on July 5. RCMP said that the family believes that a missing green Hyundai Tucson SUV the couple was towing behind their RV may be the key to finding out what happened to them.

Quilt show reveals that talent lives in Torquay By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury For a small town like Torquay, a quilt show, which displays the creative works of the women in the community, gives a sense of unity and allows visitors from surrounding areas a chance to witness the talent which lingers there. “It just shows how much creativity and artistic ability there is. I’ve heard a lot of good comments about how amazed they are that 10 of us can put this on,” said Christa Marcotte, who is part of the Torquay Block Party Quilters Guild. The show featured Weyburn quilter, Leona Tessier, who was very humble about her very detailed, very beautiful creations. “For this I wasn’t prepared for anything special. I guess they heard about some of my work and they thought they wanted to feature one. Everybody’s work is just as equivalent as mine,” said Tessier. Tessier said she has been quilting at home for years, but joined the Weyburn Focused Quilters Club three years ago, which inspired her to continue her talent. Tessier said what differentiates her from other quilters is her dedication and focus. “I work very quickly, they all say have fast I work; possibly about six weeks from start to finish on a big quilt. “That’s when I really give it because I can quilt for six to eight hours a day, and lots of people sit an hour or two and they have to get up, move around. When I start something my husband does the cooking, and I do the sewing, so he helps me out,” said Tessier. Liz Friswell, owner of Tiger Lily Quilts, said with the way technology has progressed, quilting is for everybody. “Anyone can try it, it is not like it used to be. What used to take us hours to cut out, we can cut out in 20 minutes,” said Friswell. However, Tessier prefers to put in the extra time and effort when creating her masterpieces. “I do some of both. I’d loved to get them (quilts) long armed but a lot of it I just do at home for my own family, so I do them by hand,” she said. For Tessier the craft of quilting relaxes her, for Friswell, it’s her love of fabric that gives her a natural high, and for Marcotte it’s the anticipation of waiting
to see how the final product will turn out. “I always liked fabric, it was always interesting to see what you can create by cut-
ting it up and sewing it back together,” said Marcotte. Overall, guests and event organizers were very impressed with the event.
“They have such a good selection and so much stuff. I couldn’t believe how much they have here,” said Tessier.
PLEASE RECYCLE THIS NEWSPAPER!! For Leona Tessier quilting hardly seems like a chore. She can easily sit for eight hours straight working on he same quilt. Although she remains humble about her crafty art, others deemed it necessary to feature her works at this years quilt show in Torquay.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A bit of Arian contrariness could be keeping you from getting all the facts. Turn it off, and tune in to what you need to hear. It could make all the difference this week. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Getting an answer to a vital question involving financial matters might take longer than you’d expected. A new factor might have to be dealt with before anything can move forward. Be patient. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Use your good sense to see what might really be driving a colleague’s workplace agenda. What you learn could lead to a new

True, most of your co-workers might not like the delay, but as before, they might appreciate what follows from it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You revel in golden opportunities this week. One cautionary note, though: Be careful to separate the gold from the glitter before you make a choice. Someone you trust can help. Estevan art gallery educates residents through exquisite art exhibits By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury Estevan’s Art Gallery and Museum offers residents a creative outlet; somewhere for one to escape amongst the world of self-interpretation. Griffith Baker, director/curator for the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum, jumped on board in the
early months of 2009. His first exhibition featured artists who were very dear to him personally, but talented nonetheless. “They had a second grant available to do some sort of special project. Our previous curator, Cheryl Andrist, applied for this grant, which they call the special initiatives grant, and received somewhere
in the vicinity of $7,000 to curate an exhibition with a guest curator. “Cheryl retired a few months later and I came in, and having a different set of skills than Cheryl, I chose to redistribute the money towards a catalogue and having an exhibition,” said Baker. The exhibition promoted First Nations’ mas-

It is influenced by legend but it is contemporary and not very traditional in a sense,” said Baker. Contemporary is an-

terpieces, which were collaborated by Sean Woodroof Whalley, Baker’s former professor at the University of Regina, and John Henry Fine Day, a friend of Baker’s who attended the same university. “I thought what better than to have a perfect collaboration between a First Nations artist and a European artist. Not only that,

but John Henry is from the West Coast and Sean is from the East, so I thought that was kind of interesting geographically since they are talking about the same sort of ideas,” said Baker. The ideas Baker describes are that of eco-tourism, manmade attractions like campgrounds, ski hills, etc., and environmental-
ism. Both Wally and Henry created pieces of art, which stemmed from ancient Cree legends, mixed with their views on the aforementioned themes, out of rawhide and wood. “John did the rawhide stuff and Sean did the wood stuff. They combined it so that before John did one of his rawhide pieces, Sean
would do his wood piece so it would incorporate. They weren’t working separately, they were always working together. “Having two artists work on one sculpture, something that is completely collaborative from start to finish; there is some really neat works that come out of it,” said Baker of the pair’s unique collabora-
tion. Sadly, before the exhibition was to take place, Henry passed away. The work featured was his last masterpieces. “John passed away from leukemia, so this exhibition was actually the last bits of sculptures that he ever made. In fact, a lot of them were being made on his death bed, I mean,

that’s how dedicated he was to art.” However, Baker said people often assume that First Nations art is ancient, but that wasn’t the case in last year’s exhibit. “For his specific exhibition, because it is a First Nations’ artist and First Nations contemporary art, which is kind of a strange thing because when you

other one of art’s aspects that is often misconstrued and misunderstood. “I think we are being detached from it and, in a way, I think it’s the way the art world has gone. It’s kind of become inaccessible because it’s really high academic, hard to understand, there’s some weird stuff and it’s not always visual,” said Baker.
However for a community that may not be bombarded with new forms of art, Baker said the community is catching on. “Our community is so transient. We have people from all over the world coming here on a regular basis.”

Maxi Twilite Ball Tournament honours long time baseball fan and contributor By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury This year’s Maxi Twilite Baseball Tournament was a huge success and received nothing but positive feedback from the community. It began back in 1976, and only 16 teams were allowed to enter, forcing others to create their own tournament. Now the tournament features 21 teams from across Saskatchewan. “The tournament started in 1976. It started out as a strictly over-35 tournament. It was quite successful, they had 16 teams; they had a waiting list to go on, but they always limited it to 16 teams. “A few years back there was a realignment because the teams that couldn’t make the 16 teams tournament had a mini-tournament. Now they combined the two, so we actually have 21 teams this year from all over the province, said Lindsay Clark, co-chair of the Maxi Twilite Baseball Tournament. The tournament was created for those athletes who had grown out of
Bryan Gowen, pictured here with his family, was this year’s Maxi Twilite Baseball Tournament’s honoured guest. Bryan enjoyed the sport and actively participated in the tournament for 25 years until being diagnosed with ALS. their age divisions, but still wanted to enjoy the sport, said Clark. “It was that people progressed out of their age group and still wanted to be out with their friends playing ball, but didn’t have a venue to do that. “I think there was a lot of people in the area that
wanted to have a place to play, and I think somebody came up with the idea of it and it carried on for years. This year’s tournament honoured long time participant, Bryan Gowen. “Bryan Gowen in 1981 became involved in baseball. He received his 25-year award in 2006. Bryan has

ALS and he wasn’t able to play that year but was still able to attend, but was very involved in organizing and keeping this team going,
Clark said that when the community heard that Gowen was to be honoured, they could not have been more excited. However, Gowen remains humble about the entire event and even joked about why they would pick a guy like him. “I suppose I was instrumental in keeping the Estevan team alive, and always making sure we had a team to go to these tournaments. “I think they just decided to pick my name out of a hat, but I was surprised when I found out that they were going to honour me and I was like ‘are you sure you got the right guy here’. All I did was play ball and give a little bit of money to minor baseball, said Gowen. This year’s tournament champions were the Lampman Legends.

Durant wears retro red helmet at practice in support of Saturday’s contest Not letting a steady downpour of rain and lighting stop him, Eric McKinney continued his recent “hot streakâ€? against the Melville Millionaires at Monday night’s game. McKinney delivered a key two-run triple in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving Regina exactly what it needed to complete the game. 7-3 was the decision, which was called in the bottom of the sixth. ••• During the S a s k a t c h e w a n Roughriders’ practice on Tuesday at Mosaic Stadium, Darian Durant and most of his teammates on the Riders’ offensive unit sported red helmets. The helmets are to be worn with the retro jerseys and pants in this Saturday’s contest against the visiting Edmonton Eskimos. “ Yo u k n o w t h e i r body types out there and you know who you’re throwing to. You know what colour jerseys your guys have on and you know not to throw to the
other team, so it’s not that big of an adjustment, said Durant about tossing passes to someone not wearing the traditional green helmet he is used to seeing. The transaction is a complicated three-way trade that would bring in guard Leandro Barbosa and forward Boris Diaw, and centre Tyson Chandler to the Toronto team. The deal would also help the Raptors shed nearly US$33 million in contractual obligations down the road.

Q: I have a “Donny and Marie” lunchbox with thermos. It was never used. Value? -- Mary, Deltona, Fla. A: Your lunchbox was issued in 1976 and is worth about $200. Before you jump for joy, let me remind you that value and reality are often two very different things, especially when it comes to the buying and selling antiques and collectibles.
