The Via Parque scheme of Calvià emerged as an innovative alternative proposal to the need to prolong the PM1 highway that linked the city of Palma to Palmanova in the municipality of Calvià. The C-719 road, the prolongation of the PM-1 to Andratx, carried one of the most intense traffic flows on the island of Majorca, with over 30,000 vehicles per day. The presence of intersections and connections at the same level on the current road led to a high accident rate that was incompatible with the minimum road safety criteria. The scheme to prolong the highway was developed as an integral proposal in which, in addition to a high-capacity road layout with the necessary conditions of safety and traffic flow, other elements of alternative mobility for pedestrians and cyclists would be integrated in the current corridor. This motor-free road, which is about 6 km long, joins Palmanova and Peguera continuing the Passeig Calvià, which had already been built. The concept of Vía Parque emerged from the need to seek compatibility for a new road infrastructure in an existing corridor that was closely linked to territorial uses. It forms a structuring element for all the spaces of interest, green zones and towns and was treated as an urban road that clearly integrates the environment and favours a relaxed, high-capacity traffic.
