Manchester’s Literary Treasure “We’ve got a house, it certainly is a beauty...” 84 Plymouth Grove, Manchester, M13 9LW www.elizabethgaskellhouse.co.uk
Introduction Victorian novelist Elizabeth Gaskell lived at 84 Plymouth Grove with her family from 1850 until her unexpected death in 1865. During this time she wrote nearly all of her famous novels, including ‘Cranford’, ‘Ruth’, ‘North and South’, and ‘Wives and Daughters’. She also wrote the biography of her friend Charlotte Bronte, and many lively letters. Elizabeth, her husband William (a Unitarian minister), and their four daughters were involved in many aspects of Manchester life. They had first-hand knowledge of life among the poor through their charitable activities, and helped in the establishment of many of the city’s cultural institutions. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and other donors, the house has been restored and furnished as it would have been around 1860. Here at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House we can offer you a unique venue in the city for your event; everything from meetings, training events and small conferences, to special lunches, afternoon teas and evening drinks receptions. We are a licensed venue.
Meetings The upstairs rooms (originally bedrooms) have been refurbished to modern standards and are ideal for meetings, conferences and more informal events. Our newest development, the ‘Coach House’, has provided two new spaces, the ‘Darwin’ and ‘Nightingale’ rooms. Each of these rooms are equipped with large screens to accommodate digital presentations, films and training videos. Our Servants Hall is also a popular meeting, seminar and performance space. Events & Period Rooms Elizabeth Gaskell’s House is an elegant setting for intimate music recitals, talks and small theatre and literature events. The Drawing Room is a popular choice for live music, and is the very room where Charles HallÊ taught Meta and Julia Gaskell to play piano. We have a professional standard Broadwood boudoir grand piano dating from the late 19th century and can arrange for musicians to play for your event. Give guests and audiences the unique opportunity to enjoy the ambience and finery of this Victorian home, just as Elizabeth and many of her famous visiting friends and contempories did, in a beautiful house that will engage, entertain and delight. Seating capacity is up to 30 in the Period Rooms, however larger audiences can be accommodated for promenade events that include the hallways and upstairs rooms. We welcome creative partnerships and projects and host a year-round programme of special events and activities.
Learning & Engagement Elizabeth Gaskell’s House is a truly inspirational venue for people of all ages. All of our learning and engagement sessions take place within our beautifully restored period rooms and atmospheric Servants Hall. We offer workshops and activities for schools, home education groups, further and higher education organisations and community groups. Sessions can be tailored to your specific needs and we are at present seeking schools to collaborate with us on developing our formal learning offer. Filming The House is a Grade II listed property and was built between 1835 and 1841, and is a rare example of the elegant Regency-style villas once popular in Manchester. Now, thanks to a major £2.5m project, the House has been fully restored to look as it did in around 1860, when Elizabeth lived and wrote here. Friends and visitors to the House included fellow writers Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, John Ruskin, the American abolitionist and novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe and musician Charles Hallé. The beautifully decorated and historically authentic Victorian interiors provide an exquisite backdrop to any scene or interview and have featured on many TV shows, such as ‘Houdini and Doyle’, ‘Mastermind’ and the film short ‘Ice Hotel’. We welcome enquiries for feature films, TV documentaries, interviews, commercials and photo shoots. All filming and photography is done outside of our general opening hours and we are happy to discuss requirements during a comprehensive site visit.
