Finding a church for a wedding is one thing. Finding a place to honeymoon is another. Yet another — and quite often the most overlooked — is finding a venue for that wedding rehearsal dinner or after-wedding reception. Most churches have a basement or activity area for wedding receptions. However, if your wedding is in mid-summer, availability could be limited. Never assume any facility is available. The longer you can call in advance, the better the chances are that a place will be open. Be aware that since many of these are public facilities, you may be required to sign a contract or leave a damage deposit and abide by rules regarding alcohol distribution and use. Each facility of course will have different rules. Following is a list of local businesses and organizations that offer space for a fee.

The VFW in Estherville actually has two rooms — the trophy room, which comfortably seats 40-50 — ideal for a wedding rehearsal dinner — and the banquet hall, left, which can comfortably seat 250. Fort Defiance State Park The iconic lodge at Fort Defiance, built in 1930 in the style of a frontier fort, is gaining a reputation nationally with photographers. Reservations should be made far in advance. The lodge seats 60 and the shelter down the road 75, making either venue ideal for small to mid-size wedding parties. Many choose to hold their wedding ceremony at the lodge itself. The lodge opens May 1. How to marry a princess Howard Croner of Estherville gave us the following information which he received in June 2010 from a friend, the late Gene Person of Fort Dodge. It seems that Person’s cousin, Daniel Westling, a Swedish commoner, married the princess of Sweden, Here’s what Person had to say about it: I was shocked when I received this synopsis in the mail from my cousin in Sweden. Dan had been going with this princess for about five years. The king was against it but his daughter won out. He is going to step down from the throne and turn it over to his daughter and Prince Dan Westling. It took six years to make a prince out of him but the Princess Victoria

When the clock strikes midnight in the gilded ballroom of Stockholm’s Royal Palace on June 19, a prince will lead his princess in the first waltz of the evening, as an audience of Europe’s royalty looks on approvingly. The glamorous midnight ball will be the final event of a historic day, and a moment to savor for His Royal Highness Prince Daniel — a former fitness instructor called Daniel Westling from a village in the forests of central Sweden. In his extraordinary
courtship with Crown Prince Victoria, he has received the modern equivalent of a kiss that turns the frog into a prince — careful grooming by courtiers, language tutors and a public relations agency. Now, eight years later, he has been transformed into a sophisticated, modern young royal. The dream romance will now culminate in a fairy tale royal wedding. Europe’s biggest royal event since the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. “Their relationship came as a big surprise,” said Johan T. In the late afternoon, so the 1,100 guests in the capital’s 13th century cathedral can wear evening dress, Mr. Westling will wed the young woman of 32 who will one day succeed her father on Sweden’s throne. Sweden is serious about equality between the sexes and it has produced a fairy tale with a difference; this time it is a beautiful princess who whisked her prince away from humdrum ordinary life to a magical world of palaces and balls. “It was like a fairy tale — she kissed her gym trainer and she got a prince,” said Sten Hedman, an author who has followed the royals closely since 1962. Crown Princess Victoria first met Mr. Westling during a session in his Stockholm gym. She was a troubled princess in those days. She had begun training to fill her empty hours, and to help overcome a serious eating disorder. He was first pictured in Swedish newspapers in 2002 looking startled at the attention of paparazzi, wearing jeans and with his long hair poking out from under a baseball cap. Even worse there was his rural accent, the subject of cruel jokes among Victoria’s blue blood friends — the so-called Stureplan brats from Stockholm’s answer to Sloane Square. Her father, the authoritarian King Carl XVI Gustav, 64, was dead set against their relationship. His precious daughter was lined up for a Danish prince with impeccable lineage and the king was determined not to admit a tongue-tied commoner from the forests into the royal fold. The pressure was so great that in 2004 their relationship entered a crisis that nearly ended it. But Victoria stuck to the path of true love. Mr. Westling learnt enough etiquette to get by in high society, with the assistance of a committee of courtiers who were dubbed “prince’s school”. And the king eventually bowed to the inevitable and relented, defeated by his daughter’s insistence that Mr. Westling was her true love. Much of the credit for the happy ending is being given to the courtiers whose efforts transformed Mr. Westling — the so-called “Prince’s school”. He was intensively tutored in English,
French and German, so he can converse when he travels abroad, and given classes in Swedish history and political science. A public relations company advised him on his image. Stockholm’s finest tailors and hairdressers gave his a swish new look. He switched from driving an Alfa Romeo to a Lexus. In charge of the transformation was Brigadier General Jan-Eric Warren, deputy master of ceremonies at the court — the courtier who was given a commoner and told to turn him into a prince. But Victoria stuck to the path of true love. Mr. Westling learnt enough etiquette to get by in high society, with the assistance of a committee of courtiers who were dubbed “princeʼs school”. And the king eventually bowed to the inevitable and relented, defeated by his daughterʼs insistence that Mr. Westling was her true love.
They met every day for years for lengthy sessions, and although the Brigadier General has been discreet to the point of being secretive, he has disclosed that Mr. Westling was extremely ambitious and attentive. “He is fascinated by history, especially Swedish royal history, the courtier said with avuncular pride. The engagement photographs sold in Stockholm’s gift shops, alongside Viking figurines brandishing battleaxes and souvenir trolls, show the change now the jeans and baseball cap are gone. In the picture Daniel and Victoria make a glamorous, handsome couple, clearly smitten with each other. Seasoned royal watchers have been astonished by Mr. Westling’s evolution into a prince. “Now with the suit and tie and designer glasses he looks like a stockbroker,” said Mr. Hedman, the author. “The transformation is remarkable — he is barely recognizable from the young man we saw in 2002. “The courtiers taught him how to eat, what to say, how to stand. “The people like Daniel and they like Victoria too, especially the young who are impressed with her concern for the environment. “As a couple they are almost too perfect, but he really is squeaky clean. Swedish magazine journalists have tried very hard to find something on him for the past eight years.” But if Victoria and Daniel are almost boringly nice, her younger brother and sister

Brown recommends that the bride establish her registry at least six months before the wedding. Brides are welcome to return to update or add to their registry. Then there’s the neckline, with options such as sweetheart, straps or off the shoulder. Then it’s a process of elimination of what the bride doesn’t want until the dress is found. That’s the magic moment when the bride steps onto the church altar, framed by a mirror, with subdued light streaming through the stained-glass windows. A simple wedding can work too SWARTZ Continued from page C7 away, everything had to settle into place. Using the Estherville VFW Trophy Room for the rehearsal dinner was the obvious choice, especially since Amanda had spent time as a waitress there. As we were both members of Trinity Lutheran Church, the location of our wedding and reception became obvious—right at the church. A crafty woman—as evidenced by how she got me to propose—Amanda wanted to make most of the decorations for our reception. For one, she simply took sand from our playground in
the backyard and put it in a canning jar. A ribbon around and a small electronic candle inside made for the perfect centerpiece. Trinity Lutheran has its own soft-serve ice cream machine. Our thoughts turned to offering ice cream with a variety of different toppings at the reception to go along with the wedding cake. Speaking of the wedding cake, Nancy Schroeder of Estherville made that for us and we were pleased with the result. We were also pleased in using Amanda’s friend Ann Hansen as the photographer for the day. Having just a maid of honor and a best man may

Britain is sending the Earl and Countess of Wessex. “I will be in the crowd watching the cortege on the day, waving my little Swedish flag,” said student Anna Lindstrom, 19.
seem like a small celebration for us, but it suited our personalities. The day of the wedding, everything went well. Having a sister who can play organ and piano provided the ambiance for the day. After Pastor Paul said, “You may kiss the bride,” and announced us as husband and wife, we exited the worship area to the “Peanuts” Theme song. We then returned to usher our guests and thank them for coming. We enjoyed our day mostly because of those who came to share it with us— and that it was the start of our new life together.
Nowhere will celebrate the wedding with more enthusiasm than the sleepy lakeside town of Ockelbo, Mr. Westling’s childhood home 100 miles north of the capital in a logging area where elk, bears and beaver abound. Last winter starving wolves came into outlying farms and killed pet dogs. Mr. Westling’s parents still live there in a simple house. Before they retired, his mother sorted letters in the village post office and his father worked for the council. The 3,000 villagers have become used to the sight of secret servicemen in the high street.
