Unique to Emmet County and fortunate for its resi‐ dents is that there is a local place that holds all this histo‐ ry, the Emmet County Historical Museum located in Estherville. Walking into each building of the museum, it is hard not to gasp at the vast array of items and the decades of his‐ tory that sit within such a small area. Whether a person

The museum also houses research and records of Estherville and sur‐ rounding communities such as school year books, city directories, old newspapers and many, many pictures. There is even informa‐

tion on towns that no longer exist in Emmet County. Two rare items that volunteers of the muse‐ um discovered in their possession was a vet‐ erinary surgical table and what is called a horse power. “We had a couple things here for a long time and now just realized we had something dif‐ ferent,” said volunteer and board member for

the museum Mildred Bryan. “One was manufactured here in Estherville,” said Bryan about the veterinary surgical table. “The build‐ ing still exists down on South 6th Street, across from where the old lumber‐ yard use to be. But it wasn’t in business here a long time. It did move up to Fairmont.” If surgery had to be done, the sides would slide in and a bar would slide down to hold the hog in place explained Don Koons, another volunteer and board member for the Emmet County Historical Museum. The second item, which is referred to horse power. (see photo). “Years ago, we didn’t have steam engines, we didn’t have gasoline engines, so they had this horse power,” said Koons. Used often for threshing, it was driven by four horses that would go around and around it. The horse power would then have a rod that runs down to what is called a speed jack, which would be belted up to a thresh machine. “It wasn’t a big thresh machine; it was a wooden one,” explained Koons. Horse power was also used for other jobs such as well drilling, said volunteer and board member Don Valen. “It was the transferring from doing it by hand to with a horse pulling it,”

MUSEUM, Continued from Page 7 said Valen. “They didn’t go from one to suddenly a big steam engine to thresh everything; they made little steps and this is one of those steps between beating the grain with a club to run‐ ning a thresh machine,” said Valen. “Those (horse powers) were a big life saver,” said Koons. “They helped thresh and they could hook them up to grinders and burr mills.” Today’s equivalent to a horse power would be a self‐propelled combine. What makes this item so unique is that many did not survive past World War II. “When WWII started, there was a big drive to clean out your groves and bring in your metal,” said Koons. “I can remember in Swea City, we had a pile of iron 400 to 500 feet long and 30 feet high. People just brought everything in.” From there the metal was loaded onto coal cars and shipped to refineries to make weapons or equipment for the war, explained Koons. These are just two of the unique and interest‐ ing antiques that the museum offers visitors. “Any given day we are out here, we see some‐ thing new every time,” said volunteer and

board member Wayne Peterson. “I have been helping here for 15 years or longer and the other day I was going through the museum and I noticed four or five things that I had never seen,” said Koons. “Something we are really proud of is that we have something about each community and we continue to add to it,” said Koons. “There is every kind of a variety of things,” said Bryan. “There are businesses and things that none use even knew existed.” What the museum’s volunteers hope visi‐ tors take away from the museum is an appreciation for their ancestors. “And to learn some‐ thing about the past,” said Koons. “And how it involves all modern tractors,” said volunteer and board member Jan Greig. “We wouldn’t have those without the past.” The museum opens June 1 and tours are available all year long by contacting one of the museum’s board members. “We have a lot of peo‐ ple come through here and they say, ‘this is the best museum for a town this size that they have ever been in,” said Koons.

The Bolstad School has long been one of the main attractions at the Emmet County Historical Society Museum.

She gives his shoulder a squeeze for reassurance and continues on her rounds. “Every day, I visit all the patients in med/surg and of course all the hospice patients,” Sister Patrick said. “No day is like the others around here.” Director of Mission and Values has been her title for the last 13 years, but that is only one of Sister Patrick’s three habits, um, hats. “If we’re doing it right, no one even knows there is a department of Mission and Values,” she said. “We don’t write our mission statement on the wall; we take it down and walk it down the hall.” Sister Patrick says she will miss the halls of Avera Holy Family. “Our people here are so wonderful. When I talk to patients, I don’t ask ‘are you being treated well?’ they tell me, ‘the nurses here are so kind and great at what they do.’” She leads the Estherville meet‐ ing of Pax Christi, a group of Catholics who pray and work for a more peaceful, just, and sustain‐ able world. “There is justice and mercy to serve at the hospital,” she said. “There is a group of senior staff who meets to talk about cases, and how we treat the sick and injured while also having enough resources to run our hospital. That extends to the staff. We have an employee assistance fund, and I’m part of that board, too. In the not so distant past, we had a person come to us who needed immediate help. There were comments of ‘well they’ve come to us before,’ and while that’s the case, justice would say, ‘this rent needs to be paid; let’s do that, and then we work out some of the issues that may have been behind it.” Sister Patrick’s reach as a spiritu‐ al advisor and comforter reaches beyond Avera Holy Family. On a recent day she took her gifts in hospice care to the Armstrong Nursing Center, where a man was in his last day of life. “I do feel I was given a gift for hospice,” she said. “Death can be beautiful. We are there to walk the person and their family through the journey.” In Hospice, Sister Patrick says, “We can give them meds to make them as comfortable as possible. I won’t say pain free, but free of most of the pain.” Sister Patrick lights up when she talks about the comfort the team brings to a family going through Hospice. “A patient qualifies for
