Ink! BY AMY H. PETERSON

APETERSON@ESTHERVILLENEWS.NET

We reached out to Emmet County to find the people living here who have tattoos. For this edition, three Inked families shared their stories. Tiffany Girard Tiffany Girard chose her ink to commemorate her daughter, Aniyah Mae. Girard said, “This tattoo stands for my little girl. She was born at 28 weeks gestation due to me get‐ ting preeclampsia that turned into HELLP syn‐ drome, something that is very dangerous and poses a risk to the mother’s life, baby’s life, or both. The purple ribbon is for pre‐ maturity awareness; the anchor because she was went kept me strong and kept me pushing through for her, no matter what hit us in the NICU. I was a single mother while in the NICU so everything there was left to me to decide, whether we went forward with a procedure or vac‐ cine or not. She was 1 pound, 15 ounces and 14.25 inches in length. She was not expected to live. They had to do life‐ saving CPR on her when she was born because she wasn't breathing . They intubated her right away because she was unable to breathe

on her own.” Chad Nordhausen (as told by his wife, Amber) Chad Nordhausen’s tat‐ too is in memory of Chad and Amber’s son. “This is my husband’s tattoo for our son we lost in 2008. It reads, my son, never forgotten, with his birth date and weight. He was only one pound, one ounce, a tiny little guy. His name was Elijah Chad, named after his daddy. We love talking about Elijah and remembering him.”

Tiffany Girardʼs tattoo honors her daughter Aniah Mae Myers with a purple ribbon, an anchor, and the quote: “Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.”

Melissa Hanson Melissa has a tattoo to show her fight against a debilitating disease. “I am a CRPS warrior,” Hanson said. CRPS stands for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, a rare disease that results in chronic arm or leg pain developing after injury or illness. There is no cure, but some treatments help. Hanson has a second tat‐

too she shares with her stepdaugh‐ ter, Ashley. “Ohana means no one left behind,” Hanson said. “When we became a blended family six years ago, we wanted something to tie us together, and Ohana is a theme of our family. We include everyone,” Hanson said. Tattoos are a form of self‐expres‐ sion with a 5,000 year history. Tattoo owners advise aspiring tattoo owners to make sure the artist is capable of accomplishing what you want for a tattoo, and to research and prepare proprerly when it’s time to get inked, as it should never be a rush job. Tattoos are a painful process; a tiny needle makes thousands of pricks in the skin to inject ink. Tattoo owners agree quality should factor well above price for a tattoo. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists infection, ink allergies, problems getting an MRI, and dissatisfaction as risk factors for getting inked. Despite the warnings, the tattoo owners said tattoos can be fun and carry a deep meaning, allowing the owner to connect to people on a deeper level.

Pizza Hut offers great lunch buffet, choices By Amy H. Peterson apeterson@esthervillenews.net

I have decades of Pizza Hut stories. My favorite happened when I was four‐ teen, and my cousin, Tiffany, and I flooded a Sarasota, Florida location’s juke‐ box with quarters. Tiffany’s father came over concerned because he felt Granddad would not enjoy our music. It was kind of a miracle he was in a chain restaurant at all.. Granddad not only had his fill of pizza, but also admit‐ ted to a low‐key appreciation for Michael Jackson, Heart, INXS, Howard Jones, and that one‐hit wonder, Billy Vera and the Beaters. He did also say that rock and roll was inferior dance music to big band, swing, and the croon‐ ers of his day, and I wonder to this day if he might be right. What does this have to do with Pizza Hut? Here’s another Pizza Hut story,

this time about a Sioux City location. [It’s really a magnificent story but involves certain con tent which the publish er won’t allow to go to print.] For quite some time, I have fallen away from Pizza Hut pizza. For one thing, my brotherinlaw works at the corporate office of one of the other chains; hence we often end up there. So often. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I pulled into the Estherville Pizza Hut for lunch one day in September. The staff was cheerful, and I ordered the buffet for the greatest possible variety as I did not have a date for this review. I missed out on the Wings Street buffalo style wings, but most everything else was there, including pasta,

while grabbing lunch with loved ones. The pizza itself had a satis‐ fying mix of flavors and amount of cheese. I’ve had so much pizza in my life, it’s difficult to judge the proper‐ ties of the more common varieties. It provided a tasty lunch, especially with the addition of a side of pasta (spaghetti and carbonara sauce like mom used to make and a topping of moz‐ zarella cheese) and one blue‐ berry and one cherry dessert pizza. On the whole, my experi‐ ence with the Estherville Pizza Hut was satisfying, from the greeting at the door to the frequent replace‐ ment of pizza choices on the buffet, to the quality of their offerings. I give it a rating of three cloves of garlic and a half pound of parmesan cheese.
