Safe cars for teens
(NAPSI)—Many teens aren’t driving the safest cars, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Here are some dos and don’ts to help put your teen in the safest ride possible: Do look for a car with good safety ratings from trusted sources such as IIHS and the NHTSA. Don’t get a car with high horsepower. Do get a car that your teen feels comfortable driving and has few blind spots/obstructions. Don’t get a car that’s so old it lacks the most up‐to‐date safety fea‐ tures. Do seek cars with electronic safety control capabilities. Don’t buy a car with salvage, total loss, or rebuilt titles. If you do, Do everything to make sure the car was properly repaired back to manufacturer specs. Don’t skip the test drive or mechanic’s inspection. Do get a Carfax Vehicle History Report to find out about potential problems. Shop at the all‐new Carfax.com and get a free Carfax Vehicle History Report with every car for sale. Learn More
You and your teen can find more tips plus a car buying guide on Carfax.com as well.

f there was a year when Cadillac was known for fins it was 1959 — fins so high and so sharp it was said that a person could get stabbed by one of them. Well, that may have been stretching it a bit. It wouldn’t be stretching it though to say that the ‘59 Caddy in the Emmet County Historical Society Museum is about as pristine and origi‐ nal as you’ll find — with 36,600 actual miles. And with the original whitewalls to boot. The late Gail Anderson of Omaha, Neb. donat‐ American Muscle to have the carburetor ed the 20‐foot Caddy to the museum. “No we haven’t but I think we ought to,” said Valen. “I’d just love to fix that thing up and drive it in the parade and fill it full of directors.” Other than a transmission leak — most likely from a dried out seal — the car is in pretty good shape. Valen said the last time it was driven was about two years ago. He said he and George Dawson took the brakes apart and cleaned the cylinders. The Caddy has the original upholstery — in excellent shape, by the way. Valen figures the Caddy would get about 15 miles to the gallon. With the price of gas right now, maybe a road trip down South might be in order . . .

Sometimes, restoring a car has to be a labor of love. Nothing else will do it. When Larry Bebo of Estherville first laid his eyes on his 1929 Ford Model A five‐window coupe, he knew he had to have it. And, like many lasting relationships, he knew it would be a long time until they finally came together. Larry bought the car from a local owner in the mid‐ 1970s to early 1980s. Improvements include a ribbed top from a 1993 Plymouth van and a 283 Chevy engine with two‐speed powerglide transmission. The car still has a stick but it’s for an automatic transmission. A four‐ barrel Edelbrock carburetor spoon feeds the engine. The body is all steel — no fiberglass and the hood, cowls and sides are original. While the radiator is entire‐ ly housed inside, Larry kept the original exterior radia‐ tor cap for beauty’s sake. Baby moon rims give the A lots of curbside appeal. Larry figures the car will go way over 100, but since it’s very light — 2,400 to 2,500 pounds, he doesn’t really like to go over 60. He overhauled and sold the original motor, figuring the 283 will take him just about anywhere he wants to go. He said the old Model A’s could get up to about 50 but not for very far. While Larry did most of the body work, a shop in Dassel, Minn. did the finishing touches while the interi‐ or was done in Spencer. Both body finishing and the interior took about four months start to finish. “I just wanted to keep it basically original,” said Larry, adding that it wasn’t built for drag racing though the powerglide could probably help out a lot in that area. “That lower gear really gets you going,” said Larry.

FUEL-SAVING HABITS TO CONSIDER: When gas prices rise, Americans start feeling a pinch where it hurts—in their pocketbooks. But gas prices are no reason to stay home. AAA has some useful tips to help maximize your vehicle's fuel efficiency. First, perform basic vehicle checks that will help maximize your miles per gallon: n Check your air filter twice a year. A dirty filter reduces performance and increases fuel consumption. n Check your tires monthly, and inflate to the recommended pressure. Under-inflated tires not only increase fuel use, they are a safety hazard. Second, listen when your vehicle tells you something is wrong. Take your car in for service right away if you experience: n Engine bucking, surging, stalling, misfire or poor performance. These symptoms indicate a problem that is wasting fuel. n The "check engine" light comes on. This means exhaust emissions are too high and fuel economy is too low. Third, consult your owner's manual for the recommended maintenance needed to keep your vehicle running efficiently. Have those services performed by a shop with certified technicians who can spot other problems that may affect fuel consumption. Looking for a good shop? Visit the automotive page of AAA.com to find local AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities that meet and maintain high standards.
ome people can be intimi‐ dated when they look under the hood of their car. There are so many hoses, wires and moving parts under there that it can quickly feel overwhelming.
S
But fear not. One of the most important parts of vehicle mainte‐ nance is also the simplest: checking your fluids.
OWNER'S MANUAL The first place you should start is by opening the owner's manual for your vehicle. Not only will it tell you where to look under the hood to check each of the fluids, but it also will specify exactly what type of fluid to buy. Every car is different, and buying the exact fluid that your manufac‐ turer recommends can extend the life of your car by thousands of miles.
moving parts inside your engine lubricated, but oil that gets too low or dirty can lead to complete engine failure — something your wallet definitely doesn't want to see happen. Find the dipstick under the hood. It's usually marked with "engine oil" or comes with a brightly col‐ ored handle, and it's typically easy to access. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel, and then slide it back into place. Pull it out a second time, and that's when you can read your oil level on the dipstick.
COOLANT
Your engine's coolant, a mixture of water and anti‐freeze, helps keep the engine from overheating, and it's something that needs to be checked often — especially if you're thinking about going on a long road trip. Most newer cars have a coolant reservoir, a plastic container where excess coolant is collected. It Perhaps the most important fluid should have a raised "fill" line that of all is your engine oil. It keeps the shows how much liquid it should

hold when the engine is cool.
BRAKES Both old brake fluid and a lack of brake fluid can pose a serious dan‐ ger. To check your brake fluid, look for the brake fluid reservoir under the hood. It's often, but not always, located toward the back of the engine compartment. Make sure the fluid looks clean and is filled to the "fill" line. Be careful not to allow any water to enter the brake system, so it's best not to add fluid when it's raining if you can avoid it.
WINDOW WASHER Finally, check to see if your win‐ dow washer fluid is full before tak‐ ing off on any long trips. It might seem like a luxury, but running out of washer fluid can be a serious safety concern in wet or snowy weather. Splashes of mud and muck from the road can be blinding on your windshield, so always keep the washer fluid topped off.

Signs that it's time for new tires When it comes to maintaining your car, few things are as important as your tires — quite literally where the rubber meets the road. Not only do your tires keep you safe, providing the traction you need on the road and in bad weather, but they also play a big role in the comfort of your car. Good tires with the proper air pres‐ sure will give you the best ride and han‐ dling, not to mention better gas mileage. Here are four signs your car needs new tires:
depth is still thick.
CRACKS Extreme temperatures, prolonged exposure to sunlight and changes in humidity can all eventually lead to the sidewall of your tires breaking down. Good tires will have a rubbery, supple texture to them. If they look dry and cracked, you could be risk‐ ing a blowout, even if the tread
BLISTERS When you look at the tire from in front or back, it should have a smooth, even surface. If you see any blisters or bulges on the tire, they could be weak spots that could lead to a blowout at any time.
TREAD DEPTH The first and most obvious thing to check is the depth of the treads. All tires wear down over time, and it's important to check them regu‐ larly to be sure the treads are still in good condition. An old rule of thumb involves using a penny to measure the depth. Rotate it so that the top of Abraham Lincoln's head is pointed in toward the tire. If the tread is shallow enough to see Abe's head without any obstruction, it's past time to get new tires.

NOISE & VIBRATION If you've noticed a new noise coming from the wheel wells or a vibration that changes with the speed of the vehicle, there's a good chance you could have a problem with your tires. Even if your tires look perfect, some‐ times they can have problems internal‐ ly. Layers could be separating inside the tire, it could be wearing unevenly, or it might have a flat spot from prolonged skidding.

Keep It Up MAINTENANCE CAN MAINTAIN THE VALUE OF YOUR CAR
P
roperly maintaining your car can keep it running longer, smoother and more efficiently. Did you know it can boost the value of your car, too?
Well‐maintained cars hold their value better than ones that have let the required maintenance slip. You might think it's OK to skip or delay your car's 60,000‐mile checkup, for example, but that can end up costing you more money down the road.
