CENTRO CULTURAL SESC

The SECS Pomeiia Cultural Center, is located in a old drums factory. The cultural center was complemented by the architect with two large vol umes of exposed concrete. The cul tural center began with the idea of being architecture for leisure. The program offers different spaces for sports, culture, restaurants and offic es. WHY?

ACTUAL SITE Emerson Park is destined to public space with outdoor basic sports facilities. This park provides with an urban orchard guarded by the community, a basketball court among others. A disuse of these spaces and the physical limits like a fence has caused the park to become solitary and a dysfuntional space.

TODAY

Today, Emerson Park a useless concrete slab extends through a large space along the only existing edification the parks and recreation office. has physical boundaries like a fence and nature handled by man creating an enclosed and abandonned space that is destined for the community.

SLO’S POPULATION

DESIGN INTENTION Based on the study of San Luis Obipo’s population and due to CalPoly, a great percentage of the population are students. Being SLO a small city many students and the ret of the community live nexto to each other, without having any type of interaction. The porject aims to increase this interaction between the community and Cal Poly students. Being this the users of the pubils space, from children to elderly..

URBAN DESIGN STRATEGY Slo’s population has a large percentage of students, causing segregation between CalPoly students and the rest of the community. This projects aims to promote social cohesion between Cal Poly students, and Slo’s community through open and enclosed complimentary leisure spaces respecting the exisitng uses.

The principal circulation axis is given by the church , the exisiting basketball court limits the secondary circulation axis. The main axis is part of a permiteral circualtion. crossing the whole block giving indirect Access to the different spaces.
