EDITORIAL In this new edition of the OSC newsletter, we are particularly proud to share some images of the offices of the new IOC Olympic Studies Centre, which was reopened in May in the Villa du Centenaire, a beautiful and prestigious building next door to The Olympic Museum. After months of planning, renovation work and moving the library and archive collections, the OSC has reopened its doors to researchers, students and library users, and is happy to offer access to more than 8,500 books and a dedicated reading and study area. Following a visit from IOC President Jacques Rogge several weeks ago, IOC Director General, Christophe de Kepper will officially open the Centre on 26 June. We look forward to welcoming you at our new OSC premises in the near future. In the meantime, we send you our warmest wishes for an excellent Olympic summer, a joyful Olympic Day and amazing London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
IOC ACTIVITIES
OSC NEWS - In order to facilitate access to its electronic collections (ejournals, online databases, digital library, e-books, etc.), the library is offering a new combined search tool: the ESearcher. With its unique search interface for consulting various online resources simultaneously, this software offers rapid, pertinent results for all your searches. But beware – for licensing reasons, some documents are accessible only on site at the IOC library. - There are several new items in our digital library! From now on, all the rules of the sports that have appeared at the Olympic Games, from Athens 1896 to Vancouver 2010, are available in electronic format. Furthermore, with the 2012 Games in London approaching, special emphasis is being placed on publishing online the documents produced by LOCOG. - The Historical Archives are pleased to announce that it is now possible to consult the IOC archives database on site at the OSC (study room). The duty archivist will be available to help you discover this new tool as well as the public archive content.
THE ACADEMIC WORLD AND OLYMPISM - We are pleased to introduce you Games-Experts.com, a notfor-profit online database produced by Podium – the Further and Higher Education Unit for the London 2012 Games. This database allows the world’s media and academic community to search for and contact professionals based in Great Britain who have experience of working on and researching a diverse range of issues related to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We take advantage of this opportunity to congratulate Podium and all the universities across the Great Britain for their valuable contribution to the organisation of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. - There will be great opportunities to share Olympic-related knowledge this summer, thanks to a large number of academic conferences held in Great Britain before, during and just after the 2012 Olympic Games in London. We invite you to have a look at the list of conferences, which is regularly updated and published on the OSC website.
- On the occasion of the Rio +20 UN Conference, we invite you to take a look at the new IOC publication “Sustainability through Sport – Implementing the Olympic Movement’s Agenda 21” on the IOC’s sustainability web pages. This document sets out the developments the Olympic Movement has made since the original Rio summit and makes a broad assessment of sustainable development as a holistic framework. - In May, the IOC Executive Board selected Istanbul (Turkey), Tokyo (Japan) and Madrid (Spain) as Candidate Cities for the 2020 Olympic Games. The Candidate Cities were accepted from among five Applicant Cities, which also included Baku (Azerbaijan) and Doha (Qatar). You will find here the full report of the Working Group which made a technical assessment of the five Applicant Cities. The election of the host city of the 2020 Olympic Games will take place on 7 September 2013 during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires (Argentina). - The 2012 London Torch Relay started at the beginning of May with the flame lighting ceremony in Olympia. The flame was then handed over to the London 2012 Organising Committee before being flown to Great Britain, where it began its 70-day journey, accompanied by 8,000 torchbearers, around the host nation. On 27 July, at the Olympic Stadium, the flame will be handed to the last torchbearer, who will light the cauldron during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. We invite you to learn more about the origins and evolution of the Torch Relay on the IOC website and to follow this unique and symbolic journey on the LOCOG website. - The IOC and the IPC have signed an extension to their current agreement, which will continue to see the IOC support the IPC and the Paralympic Games through to 2020. The extension of the agreement continues in the same vein as the previous document signed in 2006, and underlines the IOC’s continued support for the IPC and commitment to helping ensure the Paralympic Games’ long-term future. This support includes not only an increased financial contribution from the IOC, but also the systematic inclusion of the IPC in a wide range of programmes and activities, such as IF development, Olympic Solidarity and Transfer of Knowledge, and greater cooperation in the areas of event planning and delivery. + More info
