Vietti on Sept. 10 said that the university “formally and publicly exonerate(s) Debbie Rittgers of any wrong-doing in this matter.” The release also said that Rittgers offered to take a lie detector test and take another hand writing test to prove her innocence. “ESU put out the false story that the handwriting is untestable because it exists in the form of a cellphone photo,” said Melvin Hale. “There was enough written material there for Wendy Carlson to move forward. No matter what the cause of the dispute was, violent incidents such as this are very serious. Police and Safety, along with the residential complexes, must be prepared to handle such an incident should one break out. “This type of incident can become very serious quickly,” Hoover said. “Generally, multiple officers respond, in this case both ESU and EPD officers were on scene. Suspects are identified and secured and or arrested and witnesses are interviewed. Reports are completed and copies provided to prosecution authorities.” The residential complexes have their own safety measures and procedures should

In the case of an active shooter or other campus emergency, Emporia State has policies in place to protect students, but those policies don’t include a lockdown. School officials say that while they try to provide a secure campus, safety is ultimately your responsibility. “You’re a hundred percent responsible for you - one hundred percent - and in our society, we tend to shift that responsibility to others because if I get hurt, the ambulance is coming,” said Chris Hoover, director of Police and Safety. “If I’m threatened, cops are coming. You know, if it really gets ugly, the National Guard is coming. If I’m on fire or my building’s on fire, the fire department is coming.” The shooting of Ethan Schmidt, ESU alumnus, at Delta State University last moth, may have others thinking about safety on campus. Staff have also been directed to let those who are involved in the altercation know that Police and Safety have been or will

Formal Complaints and How Students Can Use Them
Discrimination has been a hot topic on Emporia State’s campus lately. Students have a way to voice their issues with discrimination in a way that will be heard and investigated by ESU. By filing a formal complaint through Human Resources, ESU is required to hold an investigation. Only one or two students file a formal complaint per semester, according to Judy Anderson the executive director of affirmative action and the executive director and Title IX Coordinator of Human Resources. Filing a formal complaint is fairly simple and is a good way for a student to be listened to. Formal complaints must be submitted in writing to the Human Resources Office in Plumb Hall. A formal investigation will follow conducted by Human Resources. This opportunity is open to many people as students, faculty, staff and community members, if they are involved in ESU events, may file a formal complaint through ESU. Discrimination complaints are for anyone who feels that they have been discriminated against based on their age, race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or ancestry. For harassment and discrimination complaints, formal complaints must be filed within 180 days after the initial event. There is no time limitation on sexual violence formal complaints and they can be filed at any time. When students file a formal complaint at ESU or through ESU, they should expected that an informal inquiry and discussion. This may be followed by a mediated meeting, unless it is a case of sexual harassment. Then there will be no mediated meeting. Following these steps, disciplinary, or other appropriate action will be taken towards the accused. The file will be confidential and will be shown to others on a need to know basis. The only people who will see it are those who can help resolve the matter. “In order to investigate the complaint, both the complainant and respondent must be
