Ronald Reagan once said, “All great change in America begins at the dinner table.” At the Hornets Nest, the Food Service Management Team is making some of their own changes. This summer, they opened a new

vegetarian and vegan bar in the cafeteria, which now offers options like pita bread, hummus, fresh vegetables and rice. “I noticed that there was a vegetarian bar and that’s a nice option – and they brought back the pasta bar,” said Kelsey Mueller, senior

E mma D e P riest depriest@esubulletin.com Camp Alexander was bustling with at least 279 runners dressed in white, ready to stain their skin and clothing with vibrant colors for the 5k Nitty Gritty Tye-Dye Run last Saturday. This was the second year the camp hosted a race from the Nitty Gritty series. Much like the wildly popular

Color Run, participants started out in clean white clothes and were hit every kilometer of the race with powdered colors. Damon Leiss, head of Camp Alexander, said he was excited about this race’s potential to be bigger than last year’s Warrior Dash. “Our idea for this year was to incorporate more organizations, so it gives Emporia State students the

opportunity to be more connected with our community,” Leiss said. “The idea is to improve Emporia, and to help kids – kids of all ages.” The Tye-Dye Run was an opportunity for students to spend some time volunteering. Leiss said close to 70 ESU students volunteered at this year’s race, including students from the Associated Student Government and

The Hornets Nest now provides this Middle Eastern bread, an alternative for sandwhiches as well as a great compliment to the new hummus!

If you’re not in the mood for the caf, head on over to the Hornet Express, which is now offering a rice steamer for students to use.

Melissa Herring and Rhiannon Torres, owners of MR Sister Sweets at 7 E. 6th Ave., will be contestants on an episode of the TV show “Cupcake Wars” on Food Network. The episode, titled “The Wizard of Oz,” will premiere Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. The winner out of the four contestants will receive $10,000, according to Foodnetwork.com. Being on “Cupcake Wars” was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the sisters-in-law, and they said they knew they would regret if they turned it down. “It’s a really big honor that we were even chosen to go because there are thousands of people that apply every season, and they only choose a few,” Herring said. Before entering to be on the show, Herring and Torres had just recently opened their business in Emporia in January 2012. “We posted some pictures of some of the cakes we had done on Facebook and asked people what they thought if we should do it as a business and everybody loved it,” Herring said. In order to get on the TV show, Herring had been eyeing the Cupcake Wars Facebook casting

The first time they emailed the show’s casting page, they did not have success, but soon after emailing them for a second time, they immediately received feedback from the producer of the show wanting more information and a video of them. “The producers told us, ‘You

wouldn’t be here if you weren’t one of the best,’” Herring said. Herring and Torres said they were shocked that the producer called them and wanted more information. In mid-May, they were notified that they were entered to be on the show and filming would begin in June in Los Angeles. After filming the show, Herring
