Director of Charitable Activities

Role Overview • •

To assist and guide the Director-General in formulating and developing the strategic direction of the charitable activities of the ESU. To deliver a range of public speaking, debating, cultural and other related programmes consistent with the ESU’s stated aims and objectives. Identification and development of new charitable programmes that further enhance the overall objectives of the ESU, in the UK and internationally. To work closely with the Finance and Operations Director and the Business Development Director to ensure that financial targets are met through fundraising, commercial, merchandising and additional revenue stream opportunities, as agreed with the Director-General. To maintain appropriate archives in digital form. To identify and nurture effective business partnerships to facilitate and sustain charitable programmes. To be an effective, collegiate, member of the Senior Management Team, contributing to all aspects of the ESU’s mission and purpose.

To work with the Director-General to identify and develop a programme of charitable activity appropriate to the aims and objectives of the ESU and the Business Plan and within agreed budgets. To plan, facilitate and manage all charitable programmes, and to advise the Director-General on all matters relating to these activities. Through the Director-General, report to the Board of Governors on charitable activities. To develop mutually beneficial relationships with existing and potential partner organisations identified as having similar or compatible values as the ESU. To guide, supervise and service the activities of the relevant ESU committees. To contribute to the preparation of annual budgets and monitor performance against the budgets. To recruit, manage and develop a team of permanent and projectbased staff to deliver and support the charitable activities. Effective management of team staff including: setting of performance and development objectives, day-to-day management of a team and conducting regular performance reviews.

Graduate calibre with excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to network effectively at all levels. Evidence of developing successful partnerships with a range of commercial and charitable organisations. The ability to manage a large and diverse team, contracted parties and suppliers through leadership, motivation, teamwork, supervision and accountability. Empathy with educational and charitable objectives. High degree of commercial awareness and business acumen. Experience of working in a not for profit environment and the ability to deliver public benefit. Editorial and report writing experience. Highly developed written and oral skills. The ability to produce succinct, cogent and persuasive reports. Proven experience of managing a wide range of programmes in a charity environment. Evidence of successful delivery of programmes in an international context. Proven track record of working within and managing tight budgets. Strong project management background (ideally PRINCE2 qualified). To work simultaneously on varied projects with multiple deadlines. To interact with staff at all levels throughout the Charity to develop and maintain an organisational infrastructure that reflects and promotes ESU’s values.

Desirable • • •

As the ESU is an international organisation, knowledge of a foreign language will be an asset. Experience of working in a membership organisation. Experience of working with volunteers.

General Qualities • •

To support and promote the charitable objectives of the ESU. To act as an ambassador for the ESU in all dealings with external bodies.

Hours of Work Normal working hours are thirty five hours per week, and such additional hours as are necessary to fulfil the requirements of this senior management role. It is expected that the post holder will manage their time, workload and resources to deliver the key requirements of the role. February 2012


Location The location of work is Dartmouth House in London, although there may be a need to work at other ESU locations from time to time as the job requires. Some overseas travel may be occasionally required. Salary In the region of ÂŁ50,000 - ÂŁ55,000, depending on experience.
