Welcome to this season’s Dartmouth House events brochure, which covers March – October. This season, we have a particularly full and varied programme, including classical recitals by internationally renowned pianists Jacqueline Leung and Peter Seivewright; a whistle-stop history of jazz played by Artistic Director of Ronnie Scott’s, James Pearson; a virtuoso guitar concert by award winning Mexican guitarist Morgan Symanski as well as a gin tasting with Sipsmith’s; wine tasting with Top Grape and a variety of historical and political talks. Dartmouth House is a wonderful and historic venue, and this season we are looking to welcome as many members, alumni and guests to the international home of the English-Speaking Union. diary dates Thursday 21, 1.30 - 2.30 pm “On writing biography” A lunch time talk by D.R. Thorpe D.R. Thorpe was the 2011 winner of the ESU Marsh Biography Award, and on 21 March he returns to Dartmouth House to deliver a stimulating talk ‘On Writing Biography’. Thorpe will use specific reference to his award-winning biography of Harold Macmillan to demonstrate the challenges and rewards of writing a biography. ‘Supermac: The life of Harold Macmillan’ has been described as “the best biography of a post-war British Prime Minister yet written” by Vernon Bogdanor, Professor of Government at Oxford University. Thorpe’s other biographies have included Sir Anthony Eden and Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

Andrew Craig, ESU Congressional Intern 1997, is the founder of plainenglishfinance.com and author of “Own The World”. The book shows you why you can and should look after your own financial affairs and the enormous rewards from doing so. Award-winning economics author, Michael Mainelli has said about it: “If you want just one book on investment from the cacophony, you couldn’t do much better.”

APRIL Tuesday 30, 7 pm “In or out of the EU? What’s changed since 1975 - or is it deja vu all over again?” A talk by Sir Stephen Wall, GCMG; LVO

2008. He has written The Official History of Britain and the European Community, 1963-1975, published in July 2012.

Stephen Wall was a member for 35 years of the British Diplomatic Service.

There will be a cash bar before and after Sir Stephen’s talk.

He worked closely with five British Foreign Secretaries and was Foreign Policy Adviser to Prime Minister John Major.

MAY Wednesday 1, 1 pm “An Almost English Life” A conversation with Miriam Gross Miriam Gross was born in Jerusalem and came to live in England at the age of ten. She was educated at the progressive Dartington Hall School and then at Oxford University where she obtained a degree in English and later a Diploma of Education. She has spent most of her working life in literary and arts journalism. Miriam’s talk will take in her varied and extraordinary career.

MAY Friday 24, 7 pm Morgan Szymanski Estampas dé Mexico

The Sketches of Mexico project is an innovative collaboration between award winning Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanski and twenty international

artists. Inspired by the Twenty Mexican Sketches by Mexican composer Julio César Oliva (b.1947-) and the beautiful songs of Mexico´s foremost composer, Manuel M. Ponce (1882-1948), artists from Mexico, China, Portugal, Ireland and the UK donated more than forty original works all inspired by Mexico´s colour, music and famous sites. Tonight’s event will consist of a virtuoso guitar concert accompanied by live projections on a journey through Mexico by VJ Joe Fairwether-Hole.

Classical Guitar Magazine. He has a keen interest in chamber music and in 2006 he formed the critically acclaimed ensemble ´Machaca´. Having performed extensively in over twenty different countries as a soloist and with major orchestras, he was the recipient a Junior fellowship from the Royal College of Music and has recorded on the Signum and Sarabande labels.

Born in Mexico City in 1979, Morgan Szymanski studied at the Royal College of Music and Conservatorium van Amsterdam graduating with first class honours. He won 1st prize in the National Guitar Competition in Mexico and was the first solo guitarist to be selected by YCAT in London. Morgan has been selected as ‘one to watch’ by Gramophone Magazine and BBC Music Magazine and as featured artist on the cover of

MAY Tuesday 28, 6.30 pm, “The Art of Perception” - A talk and book signing by Bob Leaf Bob Leaf has been at the forefront of the PR industry for fifty years. The former international CEO of Burson-Marsteller and one of the all-time experts in international public relations, he has chronicled his experiences in a new memoir entitled “The Art of Perception”, published by Atlantic Books. Often credited with introducing the American discipline of public relations to the rest of the world, Leaf was responsible for creating the international network of offices which made B-M into the world's largest PR firm during his tenure. He was the first executive to bring PR to the Soviet Union in the midst of the Cold War, and he signed a partnership agreement with

the Chinese Government to establish the first official Chinese Government PR firm. According to Harold Burson, co-founder of Burson-Marsteller "There is no other person in the public relations business who knows more about the ins and outs of establishing a global network capable of serving the public relations and communications of the world's largest corporations. JUNE Tuesday 4, 7 pm “Haydn in London, Haydn on London” - a musical evening with Café Mozart Café Mozart was founded in 1985 with the aim of performing chamber music of the late 18th century on period instruments. Their programmes are innovative and based on original research, but their primary aim is to entertain, with often unfamiliar music played and sung by outstanding performers. Veteran Haydn scholar Derek McCulloch delivers the great Austrian composer’s

observations on life in London in the late 18th century, as recorded in his Notebooks and correspondence. Love, Religion and Economics all feature. Haydn’s thoughts are punctuated by interjections from the well-known period instrument ensemble Cafe Mozart with music by Haydn and his English contemporaries. Friday 7, 12.30 pm Lunch time concert by ESU alumnus Gamal Khamis British pianist Gamal Khamis has recently graduated from the Artist Diploma course at the Royal College of Music, where he studied with Ashley Wass, Simon Lepper and Niel Immelman. He has performed at many prestigious venues including the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Cadogan Hall, and is in great demand both as a soloist and lieder accompanist. JUNE Monday 10, 7 pm “Classical Kicks” with Lizzie Ball ‘A wonderful evening of passion, total commitment and unique music’ Tasmin Little OBE ‘Immediate and vibrant’ - Chi-chi Nwanoku MBE - Principal Bass OAE. Classical Kicks is a unique night of music as performance. Hailed by Classical Music Magazine as “genre-bending”, Classical Kicks will bring the most talented, exciting and diverse classical artists into the intimate space of the Dartmouth House and, whilst maintaining the best quality of musicians and musicianship, creates a lot of fun in the process. Founded in 2012 with a residency in London’s legendary Ronnie Scotts’s Club, Classical Kicks embodies the idea of bending the genre of classical music to fit into the modern day reality of classical music talent. This is a specially curated

evening for the ESU featuring music from the classical, folk, Latin and jazz worlds from South African lullabies, Argentinian Vidalas, to Scottish traditional melodies ‘Open-minded and dazzling’ - The Guardian ‘A killer musician and violinist’ - Nigel Kennedy Lizzie Ball has never stuck to the rules of classical music. Following in the footsteps of her idol Nigel Kennedy for whom she now is concertmeister she has blazed a unique path through the music world. As a scholar and graduate of St. John’s College, Cambridge and the Royal College of Music, Lizzie’s technique and intellect are ferocious in equal measure and this, coupled with her unforgettable stage presence, has taken Lizzie around the world playing and singing from sold out festivals in Mexico to the hallowed boards of the Wigmore Hall. She has collaborated and played with a huge range of artists from the aforementioned classical

wild-child Nigel Kennedy and London’s Philharmonia to pop and rock legends Nitin Sawhney and Kanye West. Lizzie is also a firm believer in education and as such has lead workshops in numerous schools in the UK and across Latin America as well as musical sessions on business development for many companies including Saatchi and Saatchi. JUNE Monday 17, 7 pm Piano recital by Jacqueline Leung Jacqueline Leung is one of the most active pianists in Hong Kong. Described as a player who possesses ‘musicality, intelligence and technical finesse’, recent engagements have taken her to a concerto premiere at the Bogota International Piano Festival; solo recitals at the 'Oscar Buenaventura' International Piano Festival; the Costa Rica International Piano Season and the American Liszt Festival as guest artist. Taking second place at the 2010 American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, her performances and interviews have been heard in venues across the globe and broadcast on TV and Radio in Colombia, Costa Rica, Hungary and Hong Kong. Over the years she has collaborated with some of the world's

most distinguished musicians and has also lectured and taught masterclasses at the Conservatorio del Tolima; University Juan N. Corpas; ABAC University of Thailand and the Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong. Recently, she served as a jury member at the 2nd Thailand International Mozart Competition. Jacqueline attended Wells Cathedral School as a specialist musician and was accepted by the Royal Academy of Music as a scholar. Currently, Jacqueline is the chairperson of the Royal Academy of Music HK Alumni Association and is

dedicated to enhance musical exchange and the cultural scene in Hong Kong. JULY Thursday 11, 1.10 pm Rodolfus Choir – Lunchtime concert The Rodolfus Choir is made up of singers aged from 16 to 25 who have been chosen from past and present members of the Eton Choral Courses for prospective choral scholars. Many members of the Choir are choral scholars, some are at music college, and most hope to make a career in music. Since its foundation by Ralph Allwood in 1984, the Choir have toured extensively in Europe, and have also appeared throughout the United Kingdom at venues great

and small, including St John’s, Smith Square and some of the country’s most glorious cathedrals.

Tuesday 16, 7 pm Songs of Change with Tom Robinson

The Rodolfus Choir and Ralph Allwood are well-known for imaginative programming, and for presenting new music. The Rodolfus Choir’s recent CD recordings include music as diverse as Howells, Monteverdi, Grier, Tallis and the German Romantics. The Choir is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 3’s Choral Evensong, and has featured on Classic FM, as well as appearing on BBC TV’s Songs of Praise and in the Channel 4 documentary Alex: A Passion For Life which followed preparations for the choir’s performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion at Cadogan Hall in April 2009. The power of a song is undeniable - from the unity of the songs of the football terraces to the protests roared by generation after generation. No stranger to politics, Tom Robinson talks of his own journey through music from the unlikely alliances of gay rights protestors


JULY and miners in the 80s to the Rock Against Racism that united artists universally to a common cause. With a carefully chosen collection for the ESU, Tom will talk and sing through songs with a message and why we are now in a golden era for both the artist and listener. Tom Robinson is a new music advocate who hosts three weekly programmes on BBC Radio. His first radio show was for the BBC World Service in 1987 and he has since hosted programmes on BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Live and most recently 6 Music where he has worked full-time since 2002. He first became known in the 1970s as a musician and LGBT activist with the Top 20 hits 2-4-6-8 Motorway and Glad To Be Gay and was also a prominent supporter of Rock Against Racism and Amnesty International. He released 19 albums between 1975 and 2001 and has written

songs with Elton John, Peter Gabriel and Dan Hartman. In 1983 he also had a Top 20 hit as a solo artist with War Baby. Tom is a member of the Ivors panel at BASCA and hosts workshops for songwriters as well as the New Music blog Fresh On The Net. Tickets: £10 members and alumni, £15 guests. Thursday 25, 6.30 pm “A life in HM Diplomatic Service” - A talk by Sir Alan Munro, former UK ambassador to Saudi Arabia Sir Alan Munro Joined the Diplomatic Service in 1958 and went out to Lebanon

For the major part of his subsequent diplomatic career he was involved with Britain’s everactive relations with the countries of the Middle East and Africa, serving in a variety of posts across the world and taking in a number of roles in Whitehall. He lectures and broadcasts on Middle East issues and is the author of two books, ‘Arab Storm’, on the politics and diplomacy behind the 1990-91 Gulf War. Tickets: £3 members and alumni, £5 guests. SEPTEMBER Tuesday 3, 7 pm Piano recital by Peter Seivewright Peter has performed extensively as a recitalist and concerto soloist throughout Great Britain, Ireland, Norway, Austria, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Denmark (eight recital tours), Latvia, Estonia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Australia (four recital tours), China, India, Kuwait, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States of America and Russia. Notable successes in Europe include his recital on the opening night of the Heilbronn International Piano Forum, a recital which was enthusiastically reviewed in papers and journals in Germany and Italy, and his 1994 recital in the International Masters of the Keyboard series in Bruges, Belgium. One of the few British pianists ever to be invited to perform in this major European piano recital series, his performances of Bach's Goldberg Variations and Rachmaninov's

2nd Piano Sonata were rapturously received with a prolonged standing ovation.

From 2008 to 2011 Peter was Professor of Music at the Academy for the Performing Arts at the University of Trinidad and Tobago, returning to the United Kingdom in the summer of 2011 to resume fulltime recording and concertizing. In August 2009 he gave a highly successful concert performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto Number 1 with the Ho Chi Minh City Symphony Orchestra in the Opera House, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and in October 2009 made his Vienna debut, performing a recital of music by J.S.Bach in the Bosendorfer-Saal.

SEPTEMBER Tuesday 24, 7 pm “The Bookshop Band” Formed in late September 2010, The Bookshop Band write songs inspired by books, and play them in bookshops. The band began as a collaboration with Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights, in Bath (Independent Bookshop of the Year 2008 / 2011) as part of a plan to help Mr B’s rejuvenate its traditional ‘author evenings’. The band would read the forthcoming author’s book in advance and write two songs based upon it, to be performed at the start of the evening. Their performances are inextricably linked to the books themselves, as the members of the band take it in turns to describe where the inspiration for each song came from. Over this period they have been featured on 6Music / The Today Program / Front Row / BBC 1 News / The Guardian among others.

During 2012 the band have wrote a further three albums and hope to record them for release in early 2013. Come and join us for an entertaining evening of music and literature.

SEPTEMBER Friday 27, 7 pm “Top Grape” tasting event Can you tell a Tokaj from a Recioto, Clare Valley from Uco Valley, or Russian River from Margaret River? Old World or New World, Bordeaux or Burgundy - what’s your poison? At the heart of the Top Grape experience lie the wines. Good wines, quality wines, and wines that will broaden horizons and surprise. Top Grape offers the opportunity to sample and discover a great range of carefully selected, exciting wines in a highly entertaining, challenging way, with many wines sourced from small producers, and that truly reflect their origins and the passion that goes into the making of them. Contestants will learn how to decipher the value of a wine just by tasting it, distinguish between a champagne and a Franciacorta, discover the ‘Super Tuscans” and the “garagistes”, all while pitting wits

against their peers in a competition that’s as full of fun as fact. From Swan Hill to Salta, from Sauternes to Sonoma and Sussex, wines from all parts of the globe will play a role in Top Grape.
