This is a new position within the organisation and is central to the future of the ESU as a whole. We are faced with challenging times regarding fundraising and other development activities. Our position is strong – with over 10,000 members and alumni in England and Wales supporting our work, we are looking to develop various areas of our activities and business, whilst ensuring the long-term financial stability and growth of the ESU. To achieve this vision, it is vital that we continue to develop our range of charitable activities across our domestic and international network, as well as ensure that the ESU benefits from long-term financial security, and that our management processes represent our commitment to staff and best practice. The appointed candidate will be pivotal to the ongoing success of our historic orgnanisation. Provide guidance and advice to the Director-General, the Board and relevant committees on all financial, estate management and HR matters. Overall control of the Company’s financial transactions, accounting function, audit and financial planning, cash flow management; including formulating financial targets and budgets in accordance with the overall strategy determined by the Director-General and the Board. Oversee production of timely and accurate financial reporting to the DirectorGeneral including production of budgets, monthly management reporting, cash flow reports and management of the production of the draft external financial statements. To work closely with the Business Development Director and Director of Charitable Activities to ensure that financial targets are met through fundraising, commercial, merchandising and additional revenue stream opportunities, as agreed with the Director-General. Effective management of the external audit process. Ensure compliance with the relevant regulatory and legal requirements of the Charity Commission, Companies House, HMR&C and other statutory bodies, credibly representing the ESU in reports to, discussions and negotiations with them and other related bodies. Promote the long-term prosperity of the ESU through investment and asset management. Responsible for HR, payroll and staff training matters. Implement and regularly update appropriate finance and HR policies. Oversee the effective management of the ESU estate, safeguarding the properties and ensuring the physical assets are in good repair and used to optimum benefit for the Charity and its members. Oversee the effective management and delivery of a range of projects, including capital development projects.

Effective management of team staff including: setting of performance and development objectives, day-to-day management of a team and conducting regular performance reviews. Communicate effectively with the Director-General, other senior members of staff and the Board regarding the ESU’s strategy and position in relation to finances and estate management. Operate a risk management framework and a programme of internal audit and responsibility for the ESU’s financial control framework with the Director-General and Board. To be an effective, collegiate, member of the Senior Management Team, contributing to all aspects of the ESU’s mission and purpose.

Work with the Director-General to identify and develop a Business Plan and annual budget. Prepare regular reports and recommendations relating to the achievement of the Business Plan. Preparation of timely and accurate annual accounts, monthly management accounts, forecasts and other financial information required by the DirectorGeneral, the Board and relevant Board Committees. Manage and regularly review the ESU’s cash flow strategy and position to ensure the ESU’s financial security. Work with the external auditors to prepare annual accounts for the approval of the Board. Maintain a regular programme of internal audits, ensuring a risk profile is in place and regularly reviewed. Manage the work of the Accounts Department and ensure that all procedures conform to best practice and that reporting is complete, accurate and timely. Through the Director-General, report to the Board of Governors on the financial security and administrative efficiency of the organisation. Maintain strong professional relationships with external advisers. Advise and support the relevant ESU committees including Finance and Investment Committee, Audit and Risk committee and Dartmouth House Ltd. Negotiation of contracts with suppliers, contractors, tenants and service providers. Ensure accurate and up to date employment records are held and a system of staff appraisal is implemented. Ensure the ESU remains compliant with all relevant HR legislation including Diversity Policy, Grievance Management, Disciplinary processes, Health and Safety and oversee the development of all appropriate policies and staff training programmes. Ensure the building services team maintain the premises to a high standard, delivering a safe, clean and welcoming environment for staff and visitors.

Effectively manage a team of staff including the setting of performance and development objectives, monitoring of day-to-day team performance and conducting regular performance reviews and appraisals with team members. Development and management of an estate management strategy in conjunction with the Director-General and Board. To be flexible and adaptable in the undertaking of any other related duties.
SPECIFIC SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Essential • • • • • • • • • •
Graduate calibre and fully qualified accountant. A successful track record in a senior management post which has involved strategic planning, management of financial and accounting services, payroll and other services (for example facilities, HR, IT ) Proven experience of managing operational and cultural change, including the successful achievement of large scale projects. The ability to manage staff and contracted parties and suppliers through leadership, motivation, teamwork, supervision and accountability. High degree of commercial awareness and business acumen. Represent the interests of the ESU with professional advisers and other stakeholders. To present financial information in a concise and accessible format for nonfinancial managers. To work simultaneously on varied projects with multiple deadlines. The ability to manage a diverse team. To interact with staff at all levels throughout the Charity to develop and maintain an organisational infrastructure that reflects and promotes ESU’s values.
Desirable • • •
As the ESU is an international organisation, knowledge of a foreign language will be an asset. Experience of working in a membership organisation. Experience of working with volunteers.
General Qualities • •
To support and promote the charitable objectives of the ESU. To act as an ambassador for the ESU in all dealings with external bodies.
Hours of Work Normal working hours are thirty five hours per week, and such additional hours as are necessary to fulfil the requirements of this senior management role. It is expected that the post holder will manage their time, workload and resources to deliver the key requirements of the role.
Location The location of work is Dartmouth House, although there may be a need to work at other ESU locations from time to time as the job requires. Some overseas travel may be occasionally required.
Salary In the region of £50,000 - £55,000, depending on experience.
