WALTER HINES PAGE SCHOLARSHIP

CHAUTAUQUA INSTITUTION SCHOLARSHIPS

The Walter Hines Page scholarship offers teachers the unique opportunity to explore and exchange educational ideas between Britain and America. Scholars travel to the USA to study an aspect of education which is relevant to their own professional interests and development. Recent research projects have included:

The Chautauqua Institution is a not-for-profit educational centre situated on the banks of Lake Chautauqua in upper New York State. The emphasis of their legendary intellectual Summer Sessions is to provide a unique cultural experience to those teachers who have a particular interest in wider education. A wide variety of courses, lectures and events are offered, usually in the fields of art, music, literature, education, business, religion and international relations. There is an opera, play or concert almost every evening and daily public lectures dealing with current political, economic and social issues. Recreational facilities include swimming, sailing, waterskiing and tennis.

• A study of autism with respect to social education. • A comparative study between UK and US approaches to teaching newly arrived EAL pupils. • Research into the background and ethnicity of a student with relation to the quality of work they produce. • An analysis of post-school provision for the deaf and hard of hearing. Scholars have the opportunity to travel widely in the US and throughout their tour scholars are guests of American members of the ESU. Members provide generous hospitality and arrange a cultural programme which enables scholars to not only explore their field of study but also experience other aspects of American life. Scholarships are provided by teaching unions in conjunction with the ESU. To find out if your Union is sponsoring a scholarship, for further information and details of how to apply, please visit www.esu.org

The scholarship covers board, tuition and lecture sessions. Scholars are responsible for travel and incidental expenses which are offset by a grant of £850 from the ESU. The Summer Sessions run from the end of June. Scholars can visit for up to 4 weeks.

“[Chautauqua] has its own mythic force… There is no place like it. No resort. No spa. Not anywhere else in the country, or anywhere else in the world. It is at once a summer encampment and a small town, a college campus, an arts colony, a music festival, a religious retreat, and a village square. It is all of these, and none of these just.” David McCullough, historian For further information about the scholarship and details of how to apply, please visit www.esu.org
