“The wealth of nations now depends on the performance of higher education as never before, through its contributions to building human capital and accumulated knowledge; and so does the military competition among great powers - potentially, quite literally, a matter of life and death. The political health of nations also now depends, as never before, on higher education to help create greater opportunities throughout the population, to help break down hereditary class lines. Clark Kerr

“A university, like all other human institutions - like the church, like governments, like philanthropic organizations - is not outside, but inside the general social fabric of a given era . . . it is . . . an expression of an age, as well as an influence operating upon both present and future.
Abraham Flexner
Message from the Provost Excellence Engaged! When individuals hear the words “regional university” they often don’t expect faculty and staff members to be actively engaged in grant writing, externally reviewed publications, the juried exhibition or performance of artistic and/or creative works, or performance of adjudicated musical works. At Emporia State University, faculty and staff excel in all areas of scholarly and creative work! The number and quality of scholarly and creative works and the variety of funded grants authored by ESU faculty and staff rivals the scholarly productivity acclaimed at many research intensive universities. Faculty and staff members also hold numerous leadership positions in state, regional, national, and international professional organizations. Through these leadership roles, ESU faculty and staff influence cutting edge work and the very future of varied academic disciplines. We are proud of and applaud the 28 individuals who have received university, state, national, and international recognition for excellence and exemplary contributions to their respective disciplines. Emporia State University is proud to claim faculty and staff who are dedicated, committed to their respective professions, and recognized for their scholarship, leadership, and excellence in teaching. Our students benefit daily from the knowledge, devotion, and expertise of these individuals. I am delighted to proudly share the many accomplishments of our faculty and staff with you. Sincerely,
Tes Mehring Ph.D. Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Life
