COMMENCEMENT Spring 2021 Graduates Eiler-Martin Stadium A Member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education
Masks and social distancing are required.
East Stroudsburg University Commencement Welcome to East Stroudsburg University’s Commencement celebration for our Spring 2021 graduates. Congratulations to our students who have completed their academic programs, and to their family and friends who have supported them on this journey. In recognition of the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we offer this reminder that masks and social distancing are required at this commencement ceremony.
Academic Procession An usher will lead the faculty followed by the graduating students. Candidates are placed according to the degree to be conferred, and each group is preceded by a commencement marshal. Once all are seated the grand marshal leads the platform participants and the president.
Academic Attire The tradition of academic costume began in the medieval universities of Europe where gowns were everyday dress, providing for their wearers not only distinction but, quite possibly, warmth during long hours of study in poorly heated buildings. Today, academic attire is seen on American campuses only at formal affairs such as commencement, Founder’s Day, dedications and inaugural ceremonies. In 1895, an Academic Costume Code was established, and has since been adopted by most of our colleges and universities. When the code is followed, one can identify the degree which the wearer holds, the university that awarded it, and the course of study it represents. The distinguishing features are the cut of the gown, the length and colors of the hood, and the color of the tassel on the cap. The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are generally made of plain black cotton without trim, while the gown for the doctor’s degree is faced with black or colored velvet and has three bars of the same material across the sleeves. The bachelor’s gown has long open sleeves, the master’s gown has longer closed sleeves with arm slits at the elbow, and the doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves extending to the wrist. The hoods can be distinguished by both the length and color. The bachelor’s hood measures three feet, the master’s, three and one-half, and the doctor’s, four. The color of the velvet edging, which is wider for degrees higher than the bachelor’s, indicates the subject area to which the degree pertains. In addition to the colored edging, the hood shows in its lining the official color or colors of the institution which awarded the degree. The hood is worn such that a large part of the lining is visible. The black mortarboard cap with tassel is worn with each type of gown. Those holding the doctorate wear gold tassels, while holders of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees generally wear a black tassel, although in recent years it has often been customary to wear the colored tassel symbolizing, like the hood, the subject area of the wearer’s degree. In nearly every academic procession, a few costumes may be seen which do not conform to the standard patterns described above. Gold braid is frequently added to the gowns of academic administrators, and most faculties include several members who hold degrees from foreign universities, some of which prescribe very colorful attire. The following colors are associated with the various faculties. It is mandatory that they be used on hoods and optional that they be on the tassels and the velvet used with the doctor’s gowns. The Presidential Medallion The medallion, or pectoral, has long been a symbol of the rights, authority, and power of kings and queens. At the inception of the university around the year 1000 A.D., and to this day in many European institutions, the reigning monarch still functions as the chancellor of the institution, its chief executive holding appointment as vice chancellor. With the establishment of the academy independent of the crown, the royal medallion has been retained as a symbol of the responsibilities and authority vested in the office of the president of the university by the state. The East Stroudsburg University medallion was commissioned by the Student Activity Association in 1969, and first used by President Frank D. Sills at his inauguration. It was designed by Dr. Irene Mitchel, professor of art at East Stroudsburg University, and struck by Mr. Leslie Smith, an Allentown, Pa., craftsman. The chain of the pectoral was designed and crafted by Mr. Richard E. Phillips of East Stroudsburg, Pa. The medallion has, on its obverse, the seal of the university. The seal is surrounded by the torch and the mace representing the light of learning and the authority of the university. These two symbols are superimposed on an abstract rendition of the Delaware Water Gap, so much a part of the geography of the region. On either side of the seal are representations of the original Stroud Hall (1893) and the current Koehler Fieldhouse (1967). Below the seal are the extended rays representing the fourteen institutions of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
The University Mace The mace was originally a weapon of hand-to-hand combat in medieval times. With the advent of firearms, such a weapon became archaic and was adopted to symbolize the power and authority of kings and queens. Early in the history of the academy, the mace was borrowed from royalty and utilized to symbolize the authority of the institution given to it by the kings and queens and hence, the state, to grant baccalaureate and advanced degrees so specified. The mace is used at all official university functions of an academic nature. The original East Stroudsburg University mace was commissioned by the ESU Alumni Association for the inauguration of President Frank D. Sills in 1969. It was designed and created by Mr. Richard E. Phillips, a local Pocono artisan. The redesigned mace, incorporating many features of the original mace and symbolizing the achievement of university status by East Stroudsburg State College, was commissioned by the University Commencement Committee in 1987. Mr. Phillips was again requested to modify the mace to reflect the transition from college to university, and Cherry Valley artisan Abby Porter completed the silver work. The current mace is made of cherry and is approximately 38 inches long. The mace has overlays made of hemlock, dating from 1893 from the original Stroud Hall. The black and red coloring represents the school colors. The octagonal head of the mace represents the disciplines of the traditional academy, and four disciplines of contemporary higher education: science, arts, humanities, and philosophy. Surrounding the head are silver hands bearing the names and dates of the five precursor institutions. The handle is inset in silver with black onyx and red carnelian. The university seal crowns the mace.

Honors and Honor Cords Those students in the baccalaureate degree program who have received scholastic honors are distinguished by colored cords, and their names are noted in the program with the proper number of asterisks as shown below. There are three scholastic honor categories: * Cum Laude (white/gold cords) for those possessing a 3.400 to 3.599 quality point average ** Magna Cum Laude (black/gold cords) for those with a quality point average of 3.600 to 3.799 *** Summa Cum Laude (red/gold cords) for those who have maintained a quality point average of 3.800 or above Quality points are based on a four-point system in which the grade A equals 4, A- equals 3.667, B+ equals 3.333, B equals 3.000, Bequals 2.667 , C+ equals 2.333, C equals 2, C- equals 1.667 and D equals 1.000. Honor awards are based on the cumulative average of the entire undergraduate program taken by the student at East Stroudsburg University. Honor designations are translated from Latin to mean with honor, with great honor, and with highest honor.
University Honors Program Students wearing a red stole with the word ‘Honors’ on one side and the Latin words “Veritas et Civitas” (meaning Truth and Citizenship) on the other are graduates of the University Honors Program. These students have completed a rigorous 15 semesterhour Honors curriculum and written an Honors senior thesis, maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.3 in their Honors work and 3.3 in their university studies overall. Honors Program graduates are noted with .

Brian Ellis ‘20 M’21 College of Arts & Sciences Student Speaker Brian Ellis, a graduate student from Philadelphia, is receiving his master’s degree in Communication, after graduating from ESU with his bachelor’s degree as a double major in Communication and English in May 2020. He has held leadership positions on campus as president of Photography Club, president of Community Board Hemlock, the historian of PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America), and a member and contributor to SSWCJ (Sociology Social Work Criminal Justice Club), the Stroud Courier and Calliope. He was also a peer mentor, held on-campus work positions in the English department and copy center, was a graduate assistant for the communication department, and a retail associate at Walmart. In his time at ESU, he has been able to grow as a person, becoming more confident and forming friendships with people he would not have met otherwise. He also appreciates the time he was able to work with some of the great faculty and staff on campus in his student worker positions. He has been challenged in ways he could not have imagined, learning, growing and helping others along the way. Ellis aims to allow the knowledge he has and research he does to inform and guide his decisions. After graduation, his immediate goal is to gain experience in a marketing or public relations position. He is also considering pursuing his doctorate in psychology, or perhaps work for the FBI. He will keep his mind open to all possibilities, and does not want to shut down a good opportunity due to tunnel vision.

Kimberley A. Razzano, Ph.D. College of Health Sciences Faculty Speaker Dr. Kimberley A. Razzano is professor and department chair for the Department of Health Studies at ESU, where she has established her career in higher education since 2003. She received her Bachelor of Science from Springfield College in school health education, her Master of Public Health from ESU, and her Ph.D. in human development/health promotion from Marywood University. Dr. Razzano has received many teaching awards, but service is her passion. She received the SHAPE PA Ethel Encke Service Award in 2015, and in 2018 was the recipient of SHAPE PA’s highest award, the Elmer B. Cottrell Award, which is awarded to an individual who has been an outstanding and dynamic teacher and leader in the field of education. This past April she received Eastern District Linda Woods Huber Service Award. Dr. Razzano’s passion for service is split between children and animals. COVID-19 has evoked the passion to serve in anyone who believes together we are better. She would like to share this quote by Dorothy Height: “Without service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It is important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.”
Theodore R. Mostellar ‘21 College of Health Sciences Student Speaker Theodore Mostellar, an Athletic Training major with a concentration in professional practice from Stroudsburg, has combined his academic and extracurricular programs to pursue a master’s degree along with a graduate assistantship in athletic training upon his graduation from ESU. Mostellar, who was named as a recipient of the 2021 District 2 Paula Turocy Scholarship Award by the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association (EATA) last fall, was ESU’s Iota Tau Alpha (the athletic training honor society) chapter president and a member of the Athletic Training Student Club. He was also a member of the Warriors’ cross country and track and field programs for four years, a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and held a work study position for the Office of Field Experiences and Partnerships on campus. His clinical rotations helped shape his outlook on his professional career, witnessing first-hand stressful situations that were handled by the preceptors and his fellow students that drove him to be prepared for every situation. He also learned that one can take many different paths to end up at the same spot, so don’t be afraid to do something different from those around you. Mostellar’s next stop is West Chester University for graduate school and his graduate assistantship.

Daisy Wang, Ph.D. College of Business & Management Faculty Speaker Dr. Daisy Wang is an associate professor of business management at ESU. Born in Taiwan, she holds her bachelor’s degree in political science from National Chengchi University, her M.B.A. in finance and consulting from The Ohio State University, and her Ph.D. in management from Southern Illinois University. Her faculty course load includes organizational strategy, international management, logistics management, business statistics, entrepreneurship, and all other management-related courses. Her diverse research interests include supply chain strategies, entrepreneurial orientations and mindsets studies under different cultural backgrounds, small business management strategies, and business education. Dr. Wang enjoys playing piano and traveling, and has visited all 50 states and more than 50 countries. Some of her most recent travel locations are Maldives, Bora Bora, Japan, China, Poland and Peru.
Julia Rickard ‘21 College of Business & Management Student Speaker Julia Rickard, a Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management major from Reading, Pa., has had meaningful experiences both on and off campus during her time at ESU. Her academic major taught her how to give others a home-away-from-home experience while also showing all the possibilities and opportunities the industry has to offer. She worked as a student mentor in the Career Independent Living and Learning Studies (CILLS) program, teaching her responsibility, patience and how to work with individuals with intellectual disabilities such as Down syndrome and autism. The students taught her how to see the best in people and be more positive. As a member of ESU’s Christian Fellowship Club, she strengthened her faith in Jesus Christ and gained friendships that she prays will last a lifetime. She aims to always work hard and treat others with respect. Rickard was also a member of the ESU Honors Program and had two off-campus work experiences, as a travel agent intern at the American Automobile Association (AAA) and in reservations at Carousel Resort and Condominiums. She and her fiancé are planning a wedding for July and recently purchased a house in York, Pa. They both work in the hospitality industry – he works for a resort, and she will be an assistant wedding coordinator and travel agent. Their dream is to one day have a family and own a bed and breakfast.

Andrew Whitehead, Ph.D. College of Education Faculty Speaker Dr. Andrew Whitehead is retiring from ESU after 19 years of service to the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education. For 11 of those years, he served as department chair. He has taught many different courses in the department and has supervised student teachers, including this semester. University-wide, Dr. Whitehead has served as the vice chair of the Academic Council of Chairs, and as a member of the Provost’s Leadership Team. He was also a member of the Academic Continuity Team (ACT) and the COVID-19 Integration and Communications Taskforce, both of which are still actively working to deal with ESU’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, and supporting the success of all students during the national emergency. In addition, Dr. Whitehead was elected and served as the legislative chair for ESU’s chapter of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) and was a member of the state APSCUF Legislative Executive Committee. He also served as a member of ESU’s APSCUF’s Executive Council. Prior to his time at ESU, Dr. Whitehead was a third-grade teacher and elementary school principal. He proudly still holds current teaching and administrative certificates in both Pennsylvania and New York. Of all the titles Dr. Whitehead enjoys, the most important to him are that of father and husband. He has three children, Theresa, Anja and Griffin, and has been married to his wife Tracy for 28 years.
Kya’ Smith ‘21 College of Education Student Speaker Kya’ Smith, an Early Childhood Education major from Union, N.J., made the most of her ESU experience as a member of the Student Pennsylvania State Education Association, the Kappa Delta Pi education honor society, Active Minds, and the Black Student Union, along with her work as a peer mentor. Smith says that her time on campus helped her break out of her shell after arriving at ESU as a shy and reserved student. Her involvement with the peer mentor program, providing freshmen with assistance with many things that she may have wanted during her own freshman experience, helped with opening up – along with taking pride in being part of several student organizations. ESU’s faculty made her feel comfortable asking for help and really made an impact on her educational career. She learned that she can continue to push herself one step further, not overwhelming herself, but to try new things when she feels it’s time to embrace those challenges. And for what’s on the horizon, Smith’s goal is to move back to New Jersey to teach at the elementary level (second to fourth grade) with her own classroom in a district that she loves, gaining meaningful experiences and making a positive impact on all of her students.

The Alma Mater Alma Mater, thy halls so majestically stand In the midst of a landscape unique, Through the seasons we toil with our bodies and minds In pursuit of the wisdom we seek. A mystical charm binds thy children to thee, Each incoming class feels its spell; Those who leave thee regretful thy beauties recall, Which deep in their memories dwell. (Patrick Conny, 1912)
