“This is a great hire for East Texas Baptist. Josh was a tremendous addition to our staff when he joined us for the 2009 season. He will bring great enthusiasm and passion along with a tremendous work ethic and outstanding football knowledge to East Texas Baptist. It’s very gratifying to see guys who work hard and do things the right way get rewarded for their efforts. I’m very happy for Josh and his family. He will do a great job there.” Les Miles, head coach Louisiana State University
COLLEGIATE COACHING STOPS LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY (2009) SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI (2003-04; 2006) NICHOLLS STATE UNIVERSITY (2007-08) OUCHITA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY (2005) UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO (2010) SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY (2012)
Coaching both sides of the ball, Eargle has been an offensive and defensive coordinator in his young career. In 2012, he was the defensive coordinator at Southeastern Oklahoma State (NCAA DII) and served as the offensive coordinator for the University of Arkansas-Monticello (NCAA DII) in 2010. “With Coach Eargle’s experience as a recruiting coordinator, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator, he will bring a good working knowledge of the game to our program,” stated Reeves. Post season games have also graced Eargle at the NCAA Division I level along with conference championships. He has coached in four bowl games, winning two as an assistant coach at Southern Mississippi in the 2007 GMAC Bowl and the 2004 New Orleans Bowl. He took part in the 2010 Capital One Bowl on the staff at Louisiana State University and the 2003 Liberty Bowl at Southern Mississippi.
Changing the culture of the East Texas Baptist Univer-
In his first year as a graduate assistant at Southern Mississippi, he was a part of the 2003 Conference USA Championship with a perfect 8-0 record. In his second stint at Southern Mississippi, they won the Conference USA-East Championship in 2006 at 6-2.
Last year, Eargle’s team broke numerous team and individual records along with putting Jamaine Sherman in the NFL. ETBU also started out 2-0 which was the first time any team had started the season with two straight wins. Eargle also produced ETBU’s first-ever undrafted free agent in Jamaine Sherman. As soon as the NFL Draft was done, Sherman signed a contract with the St. Louis Rams.
He has made coaching stops at the NCAA Division I BCS (Bowl Championship Series) level at Southern Mississippi (’03, ’04, ’06) and Louisiana State University (’09). In 2007 and 2008, he coached at the NCAA Division I FCS (Football Championship Series) level at Nicholls State. Making stops at NCAA Division II programs, he has also coached at Southeastern Oklahoma State (’12), the University of Arkansas-Monticello (’10), and Ouachita Baptist University (’05).
Starting in January 2013, Eargle brings NCAA Division I and II coaching experience to the program. Eargle’s roots are originally from East Texas as he has made coaching stops in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma before coming back home.
Under his guidance, he has had 10 players earn firstteam all-conference and 17 players earn an all-conference award. At every program he has coached for, at least one player has earned a first-team all-conference award.
“I am very pleased to have Joshua Eargle as the new Head Football Coach at East Texas Baptist University,” stated Director of Athletics Kent Reeves. “Coach Eargle is a solid Christian man who will motivate our young men to be great both on the field and off. We are excited to have Joshua and his family coming to join the ETBU family.”
At Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2012 as the defensive coordinator, his pass defense was the 11th best in NCAA Division II and first in the Great American Conference. The overall defense finished 29th in the nation out of 156 programs and was third in the Great Amercian Conference.
sity football team Joshua Eargle is entering his second year as the head coach. Eargle set a new standard in 2013 that is paving the way for a bright future.
Eargle is very familiar with East Texas and recruited this area for Nicholls State, the University of Arkansas-Monticello, and Ouachita Baptist University. He has also coached in the area as the defensive coordinator for Hallsville High School in 2011 when they were Bi-District finalists. Coming from Sulphur Springs, Texas, where he was a Texas Sports Writers 4A All-State lineman, he played for his uncle, Chuck King, before moving on to the University of Memphis where he was a three-year letterman.
The 2001 graduate of the University of Memphis was an offensive guard that earned the Top Tiger Award which was presented by head coach Tommy West. He finished with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. He then earned a Master’s Degree in sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004. He is married to Kristen and they have two daughters

LAST WEEK ETBU 43, AUSTIN COLLEGE 27
MARSHALL, Texas – Winning make everything better and in the home opener at Ornelas Stadium the East Texas Baptist University football team put away a loss last week capping it with a 43-27 victory over Austin College. The win at Ornelas Stadium was the first for head football coach Joshua Eargle as ETBU went 0-4 last year at home. “To be able to do what these kids have done you have to understand what they have been through,” says head coach Joshua Eargle. “They went through a very tough camp, they have a prideful coach who made the mistake of putting them against an opponent like that in week one, and for them overcome that and to battle back this week says so much about those kids character and what ETBU means to them and how hard they are working. I am so ecstatic for them to come out here and get a win for them. This win means overcoming a lot of adversity.” Josh Warbington had another strong night with his passing game recording his second career 400-yard game finishing with 408 yards on a 27-of-38 performance with three touchdown passes. Roy Butler also posted a career night catching nine passes for 131 yards and one touchdown. For the second week in a row, Stephen Alfred had over 100-yards receiving grabbing four passes for 107 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Toi Glover came came out and punched through the line for two touchdowns while gaining 67 yards on eight carries.
SOUTHWESTERN 27, SUL ROSS STATE 20
GEORGETOWN – It will be a memory that will last a life time. With the help of four interceptions on defense the Southwestern University football team made history Saturday afternoon with a 27-20 win over Sul Ross State in the season opener. A resilient Pirate defense never let up and continued to put pressure on the Lobos as Nik Kelly nabbed two interceptions and Tanner Rogers and DeeJay Johnson also added a pick. Rogers was also one of the defensive highlights for Southwestern finishing with a game-high 11 tackles, 4.0 tackles for a loss and one sack. Southwestern twice rallied back to take the lead including the decisive score when Bryan Hicks found Justin Pelt near the goal line and carried it inside the pylon to put the Pirates up 27-13 midway through the third quarter. “We never gave up,” said Hicks who finished 14-37 passing for 185 and four touchdowns. “It came down to us going out and playing the best we can. We knew if we did that we would have a chance to win.” Although there were a few mistakes on the Pirates side of the field the Southwestern defense held toughest when it needed to. Sophomore defensive end Justin Broussard also played a key role with two sacks – both coming on fourth down to stop the Lobos. Broussard added 10 tackles and 3.5 tackles for a loss, but maybe even more impressive was his three forced fumbles. (from southwesternpirates.com)

GEORGETOWN, Texas – History was made for East Texas Baptist University opening up with a 2-0 record for the first time in program history and breaking the record for total offense. The artificial turf was on fire at Birkelbach Field as ETBU finished with 683 yards of total offense and tied the record for passing touchdowns with six from Brooks Holder, Josh Warbington, and Jake McClain. “We put the vision in front of our players about being 2-0 and they chased after it and we were able to make it happen thanks to those kids playing so hard,” says head coach Joshua Eargle. “It was a great effort team wise and I am really proud of their efforts as we got better this week and that is what I am most proud of.” ETBU scored on their first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead on drives led by Holder who finished 6-of-6 for 79 yards. Josh Warbington came in for the rest of the first half and part of the second half going 14-of-18 for 276 yards and three touchdowns while Jake McClain finished with a 6-of-7 performances and one touchdown for 107 yards.

Three minutes later Southwestern’s Dante Smith dashed in from eight-yards out cutting the lead to 25, 35-10. It was all ETBU from that point on as Bates and Jourdan McNeill crossed the goal line. Bates earned his second touchdown on the night on a 50-yard pass from Warbington with 10:45 left in the quarter and then McNeill jumped over the defensive line with 3:34 on the clock making it 49-10. For the third time in the game, ETBU produced a 50+ yard touchdown pass as McClain rocketed a pass to Donovan O’Connor for 58-yards putting the 56th point on the board. McNeill led the ETBU rushing game with 54 yards on 10 carries while John Gable had 49 yards on six carries. Glover recorded the other rushing touchdown with 29 yards on eight carries.

This is an excellent University for students who are interested in the best in learning, living, and faith. One of the advantages of the American system of higher education is the great diversity of institutions, and ETBU is one of only a few remaining distinctly Christian universities. At ETBU, we believe that all truth is God’s truth so we study and learn from a Christian worldview. Most colleges and universities in our nation today separate faith and learning. We integrate them. And, while we accept students of all faiths and no faith, we are unapologetically committed to fulfilling God’s call for us as an institution under the banner of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you or someone you know would flourish in a university setting characterized by close community, meaningful interaction, excellent teaching, robust student life, and a desire not just to earn a degree but to also fulfill God’s purpose for his or her life, explore our website and then come to campus and experience for yourself why we are so excited about East Texas Baptist University. Go Tigers! Dr. Lawrence Ressler, Interim President
Now in his 18th year as Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University, Kent Reeves has presided over the Tigers’ transformation into a solid member of the NCAA Division III ranks. Reeves, who remains the winningest coach in women’s basketball at ETBU, stepped down as women’s basketball coach in 1997 to assume full-time duties as athletic director. He also was named the university’s first softball coach that year and laid the foundation for a program that has become one of the best in the nation annually. Under Reeves’ guidance as AD the department has grown from just five sports in 1997 to 14 in 2014, with the addition of men’s and women’s tennis and track & field. ETBU athletics programs have consistently competed for championships in the American Southwest Conference, with 11 conference titles and 17 ASC division titles since joining the Division III ranks in 1998-99. ETBU teams have combined to make 51 conference tournament appearances since 1998, and the Tiger softball program claimed the university’s first NCAA national championship in 2010. Facility upgrades have also been a staple of Reeves’ time as athletic director. Since 1997, ETBU has added new playing facilities for softball, football, soccer, and tennis. Various upgrades and improvements have been added to each athletics program on campus over the last 10 years. Reeves arrived at ETBU as women’s basketball coach in 1987. When he decided to step down as basketball coach following the 1996-97 season, Reeves had directed the Tigers to an average of 20 wins per season in his 10 years as coach. He finished with 206 wins and his teams made nine NAIA postseason appearances. As softball coach from 1998-2000, Reeves built the program from scratch and culminated with the program’s first ASC championship in 2000. He assumed AD-only duties after that season but returned to the dugout in a pinch for the 2004 season. That year, the Tigers posted a then program-record 41 wins. He then took another year off before returning for the 2006-07 seasons finishing with 183 wins over six seasons. Reeves is active in the Marshall community, serving in the Marshall Lions Club as well as being a deacon at Central Baptist Church. He and his wife Mary Beth have two daughters: Kendra, who is married to Austin Skipworth, and Taylor, who is a recent graduate of Baylor University and was married this past summer.
