Blair Blackburn has served as President of East Texas Baptist University since June 2015. With more than 28 years of diverse administrative experiences in college and university leadership, Dr. Blackburn stands committed to excellence in Christ-centered education through faith and learning integration. Prior to ETBU, he served in four other institutions of higher learning, including Dallas Baptist University, University of Texas at Tyler, Lon Morris College, and Paris Junior College. At Dallas Baptist, Blackburn served as Executive Vice President for 13 years of his 20-year tenure at the institution. During his administration at ETBU, Dr. Blackburn has led the University to record undergraduate and graduate enrollment, as well as expanded the number of bachelor’s and master’s degree offerings. The University also developed online undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including a bachelor’s degree completion program for adults. In addition to the 16 NCAA Division III athletic teams, Dr. Blackburn launched five new club sports for greater student involvement, including ice hockey, dance/pom, bass fishing, acrobatics & tumbling, and cheer, as well as adding men’s and women’s golf at the NCAA Division III level. In 2020, ETBU will begin Men’s Lacrosse. Blackburn guided the construction of several campus facilities at ETBU over the last four years including: Louise Ornelas University Park Rowhouses, Tiger Softball Clubhouse, Outdoor Recreation Park, and the Oaks on Grove Townhomes. New athletic fields and supporting facilities were installed at Taylor Softball Field, Woods Baseball Field, Ornelas Football Stadium, and Cornish Soccer Field. With its new additions, Taylor Field was selected as the 2018 National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Field of the Year. Significant enhancements have been made to campus buildings and grounds including major remodels of Linebery Hall, Fry Hall, Ornelas Housing Complex, University Apartments, Rogers Spiritual Life Center, Marshall Hall, Scarborough Hall, Jenna Guest Music Building, Redwine Music Building, Jarrett Library, Murphy Science Building, Maxwell Strength Training Center, Dean Healthplex, Keys Gym, and Carlile-Howell Football Field House. Both Ornelas University Park Row Houses and Tiger Softball Clubhouse projects received national architectural awards for education design innovation and excellence from Learning by Design Magazine for “Outstanding Project” and American School and University Magazine for “Outstanding Design.” Blackburn pioneered the restoration of the Marshall Grand, a 1929 8-story Italian renaissance, art deco hotel in Marshall’s downtown district to house ETBU’s School of Nursing in a state-of-the art health care educational and professional skills training center. In 2018, the School of Nursing received national recognition as the #6-ranked nursing program in the state of Texas out of 119 nursing programs by nursing. org. ETBU nursing graduates have achieved 5 consecutive years of 100% pass rates on the NCLEX. President Blackburn has forged new partnerships with Marshall ISD and Elysian Fields ISD, a dual credit program between ETBU and Marshall High School and ETBU and Elysian Field High School, providing over 100 local students each year the opportunity to have access to affordable college courses on their school campuses. Blackburn initiated a student servant leadership program model, which engages all ETBU undergraduate students in volunteering one hour per week with local charities, ministries, and community organizations. Through the program, all ETBU freshman students serve each week in the five Marshall elementary schools, providing volunteer service for tutoring, reading, teacher assistance, and after school care. Dr. Blackburn is actively involved in community enhancement and economic development in partnership with the City of Marshall, Marshall Economic Development Corporation, and Harrison County. Through ETBU’s Neighborhood Renewal Initiative, ETBU students and staff remodel homes, remove dilapidated houses, clear overgrown lots, improve landscaping, and beautify sidewalks and right-of-ways. Blackburn served as the leader of the Marshall Prosperity Council in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Communities of Faith and Opportunity Initiative. He serves on the Marshall Synergy Leadership Council, Citizens’ Advisory Council, Christus-Marshall Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, Harrison County Industrial Development Authority Board of Directors, Habitat for Humanity Northeast Chapter Board of Directors, and Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas Board of Directors. Blackburn is the past Chair of the NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference Council of Presidents. Along with enhancing the academic programs, spiritual development, student involvement, and servant leadership opportunities for students at ETBU, Dr. Blackburn utilizes his unique passion for master planning, architecture, landscape, and interior design to beautify and renew the University’s campus. His experience and love for these aspects of university development were chronicled in Dr. Blackburn’s book, A City on a Hill: An Architectural History of Dallas Baptist University (2014). Dr. Blackburn and his wife, Michelle Hackney of Canton, Texas, celebrated 28 years of marriage this year. They have three children: Taylor, Elizabeth Blair, and Parker. The Blackburns are members of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. Dr. Blackburn earned an Associate of Arts from TJC. He was named as TJC’s Valuable Young Alumnus in 1999. This fall, Blackburn will receive TJC’s 2019 Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 1991, he was a cum laude honor graduate, earning a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Texas at Tyler, and was named as UT Tyler’s Distinguished Alumnus in 2016. Dr. Blackburn holds a Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He earned his Doctor of Education in Educational Administration from Baylor University in 2000. President Blackburn is dedicated to shepherding the students, faculty, and staff in spiritual leadership as the ETBU Family seeks God’s direction for the University. Blackburn possesses a vision for ETBU to serve and lead as a steadfast, Christ-centered institution, dedicated to pursing God’s truths and proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus through the intellectual development and spiritual formation of students to educate, equip, and empower the next generation of Christian servant leaders for the Lord’s vocational call on their lives.

RYAN ERWIN VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Ryan Erwin has served as the Vice President for Athletics and Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University since August of 2016. Erwin previously served as Director of Athletics at Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma, and Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, Texas. Erwin launched new sports at ETBU in acrobatics and tumbling and men’s and women’s golf. He is a member of the Marshall Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Board helping to generate ideas to grow and brand Marshall, Texas. He also serves as a board member of the First Tee of the Piney Woods. In his three years at ETBU, Erwin’s leadership has ushered many upgrades, consisting of the construction of the new softball clubhouse, the installation of artificial turf at Ornelas Stadium (football), Woods Field (baseball), and Taylor Field (softball), and full remodels of the Maxwell Strength Center and the Dean Healthplex. The remodel included new equipment, flooring, and branding, while also adding padded outfield walls at the baseball and softball fields for enhanced player safety. ETBU also started the Tiger Athletic Mission Experience (TAME), which gives student-athletes the opportunity to travel internationally and share their faith through their God-given athletic talents and abilities, in addition to starting a department-wide discipleship/community service program for the department and teams. In addition, Erwin was instrumental in securing a licensing agreement with Learfield Licensing, negotiating a department-wide exclusive Nike contract through BSN Sports, launching a new athletic website through Sidearm, increasing the ETBU student-athlete grade point average, and introducing an online ticketing system. Erwin’s experience in athletic leadership as Director of Athletics at two NCAA Division II programs has proven to strengthen ETBU’s athletic department. From his time at Rogers State University and Dallas Baptist University, Erwin has set higher standards in each position improving and increasing academic performance, athletic success, student engagement, community service, and branding. He guided Rogers State through their approval process to NCAA Division II from NAIA. With 16 years of collegiate experience in administration from sports information, compliance, and administration, Erwin has been able to help mold and shape three departments along with being a part of numerous committees. He led the Heartland Conference as the chair of athletic director for eight years, was a member of the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association Board of Directors, and served on the NCAA Division II Mentoring Program. In 2019, Erwin was inducted into the Heartland Conference Hall of Fame. Starting his athletic leadership career at Dallas Baptist University, Erwin spent 10 years working in several capacities. He worked his way up to Director of Athletics after starting as the Director of Sports Information and then Compliance Director. In 2006, he moved into the role as the Director of Athletics serving there for seven years. He was an integral part of the strategic planning and fundraising efforts to help improve athletic facilities, including the building of Horner Ballpark ($9 million baseball facility), $1.5 million renovation of Burg Gymnasium, construction of new athletic and intramural fields, expansion of athletic training and player development facilities, and remodeling of team locker and meeting room areas. He also oversaw the development of six club sports. Erwin also coached the DBU hockey team and was instrumental in the implementation of a comprehensive discipleship-based ministry program and a global sports mission program. Erwin’s career has also had a major impact on academics and community service at all the universities. His emphasis on bettering the student-athlete improved the overall grade point average at Rogers State, Dallas Baptist, and ETBU. While in Oklahoma,he spent time serving on the Threat Review and Assessment Committee (TARC), Rogers County Trust Authority, and the Rogers County Friends of Scouts and Children’s Advocacy Center. He and his wife, Kristy, have two children, Gage and Gentry, and live in Marshall. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Communication from DBU with a minor in Biblical Studies and Psychology. He also holds a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration. Erwin serves as an adjunct faculty member at ETBU and was a adjunct professor at DBU. The Erwins attend New Beginnings Baptist Church in Longview, Texas.

ETBU has earned American Southwest Conference championships in 2003 and 2015. 2003 // 9-3 overall // 8-1 ASC // Ralph Harris (head coach) Finished 8-1 in the ASC upsetting nationally ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor, 28-21, ending the Cru’s 19-game winning streak. ETBU earned the NCAA playoffs bid with a win over Mississippi College, 45-6. SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 ABILENE, Texas – In their toughest road trip of the year, the East Texas Baptist University football team fell to #7 Hardin-Simmons University, 59-17, in American Southwest Conference play. Brian Baca completed 16-of-29 passing for 176 yards while rushing in for two touchdowns. Justin Ward was ETBU’s top rusher with 62 yards on 10 carries while Tarek Beaugard had a teamleading 71 yards on three receptions. Defensively, Garrett Gibson had six tackles to lead the team while Aaron Buckley recorded an interception and Quaylon Buckley added a sack.

4Brian Baca became ETBU’s all-time leader in touchdown passes thrown as he threw his 63rd career touchdown pass in the win against Southwestern University. The previous record of 62 was held by Josh Warbington. 4KJ Kelley was named the ASC Defensive Player of the Week and put onto the d3football.com “Team of the Week for his play against Southwestern. He recorded a career-high three interceptions along with four tackles, and one pass breakup. 4Jeremiah Roberston recored his fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season as he ran for 104 yards and two scores vs Southwestern in only one half of play. He now has 746 yards on the season. It was his sixth career 100-yard game. 4Keshoyn Alexander returned a kickoff for a 90-yard touchdown in the win against Southwestern. MARSHALL NEWS MESSENGER (OCTOBER 24, 2019) When Alan Martinez was suited up for his final game as a Marshall Maverick, he realized he wasn’t ready to give up his passion for sports and decided he wanted to coach. “It was my last game in high school at Cowboys Stadium when it hit,” Martinez said. “I was like, ‘I want to be in this atmosphere with these coaches and players, and I love soccer as well and I still want to be part of both sports. I want to help the kids out. I want to help teach them right and wrong and help them to be great men, and I want to help whatever team I’m with make it to a state championship.’” His next step after graduating from Marshall High School in 2016 was staying in Marshall to attend ETBU where he started off a kicker for the Tigers. “In high school, I did the kicking and punting but here I just do the punting,” the ETBU senior said. “It’s very different than high school. The coaching is very different. In high school I had coach Harper and I’ve been through three different coaches here but coach (Brian) Mayper turned me into an actual punter and taught me what it takes to be great at it.” “When I got here, he was a kicker and punted some,” said Mayper, who’s in his second year as head football coach of the Tigers. “Then we were going to a twopunter system, which is unique. We did it last year but we don’t do it this year. So he started punting decent and really worked at it during the offseason. The first thing is he got the ball off very fast and the faster operation time for the snap and kick, the least likely a punt is to get blocked, so he got the ball off very fast. Then he just developed. He’s gone from averaging about 30-something yards a punt to probably closer to 40. He’s been doing a really good job.” “Making a spiral, like when the QB throws the ball,” Martinez said when asked what his favorite part of punting is. “Just seeing the spiral makes every punter happy. They like when the ball goes up in the air and stays up there.” Headed into his final home game, Martinez said, “I just want to go out there and have as much fun as I can, make some memories with the team. We don’t know what the outcome is going to be but we hope it’s in our favor.”
Attending college in his hometown has also allowed Martinez to watch his high school alma mater on Friday nights. “My cousin (Angel Mendieta) does the kicking there as well,” he said. “I plan on watching him and supporting him as long as he’s at Marshall High School. I teach him what the coaches have taught me.” Martinez said he often runs into people who watched him play for the Mavericks and watch him play for the Tigers. “There are people who have recognized me who say, ‘I didn’t know you were back here. I didn’t know you were going to play football in college,’” Martinez continued. “So I have people who recognize me and come talk to me after the game, which I really like.” He hopes to eventually take what he has learned from playing sports in Marshall and turn it into a career. “Once I graduate, I’m planning to move out of Marshall and go to another city to start my coaching and teaching career,” Martinez said. “I want to teach Spanish and coach soccer but wherever I go, I hope I have an opportunity to coach the kickers and punters on the football team. I love the game and even though I won’t be able to play, I plan on helping somebody out by teaching them what I was taught.” In the meantime, he still has the rest of this year to leave a mark with his team. “I want to be remembered as the guy that brought them happiness on and off the field,” he said. “I never put much emphasis on religion but being here has shifted all that. That’s what I enjoy about this school. I don’t think any other school would compare to this. I feel like I’ve become very close to God by coming here and I’m very grateful for that.” “All the guys like being around him. He’s a good teammate, always happy and cheerful,” Mayper added.
