LAST GAME ETBU 78, MILLSAPS 68 MARSHALL, Texas—The East Texas Baptist University men’s basketball team opened up the season at Ornelas Gym in a nonconference tilt against Millsaps looking to have another successful year after winning a spot in the ASC tournament last season. It was a hard fought game, but ETBU persevered winning 78-68. Dylan Augustine led the way for ETBU with 20 points, 18 of which came on six three-pointers. “My teammates do a good job of getting me open and finding me when I’m open and when I get the chance I try to make the defense pay…It’s something I’ve always been good at—shooting the three pointer.” Augustine remarked following the game. Jamil Samuel was second on the team with 14 points, including two on a dunk following a steal in the open court. Samuel led the team with seven rebounds and recorded all of ETBU’s six blocked shots. In the first half, ETBU controlled the pace of the game and maintained a steady double digit lead for most of the half. They went into half with a 36-25 halftime lead despite having only a marginally better shot percentage. In the second half, Millsaps hung tough and by the last couple minutes of the game had come to within single digits. But in the end ETBU’s shooting from downtown made the difference, as the Tigers nailed 11 three pointers as a team. Millsaps shot the ball about as well as ETBU did throughout much of the contest, but ETBU committed fewer turnovers with just 15 compared to Millsaps’ 23, and those possessions helped propel ETBU to the win.
