Celebrating Portugal in Toronto for 27 years It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that the Portuguese colony in Toronto is one of the most active and influential in the city. The strong presence of authorities from various sectors from politicians to construction workers Union representatives, to clubs and Portuguese associations spread throughout the municipality, all show the weight of this community and ensured once again the success of one more Portugal Week. ACAPO, the association that brings Portuguese clubs and establishments together, presided by business entrepreneur José Eustaquio, was successful in organizing the festivities for the 27th year. The events included a gala dinner sponsored by LIUNA 183, the largest construction Union in North America. Also the Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame took place on June 8th, at Camões Square, on College Street, an event that paid tribute to outstanding citizens of the Portuguese-Canadian society, chosen through a national survey. On the same day, the traditional Dundas Street parade took place, between Lansdown Street and Trinity Bellwoods park where

thousands were in attendance. Entire families, a proud and hard-working people that enjoyed their Sunday celebrating this pioneering nation rich in culture and history. Among the authorities present at the parade were Ontario Premier, Kathleen Wynne, the Minister of Finance, Charles Sousa, federal MP Andrew Cash, presently running candidates for Mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow and John Tory, as well as Andrea Horwath, Jonah Schein, Ana Bailão, Cristina Martins, Frank Alvarez, José Eustaquio, Joseph Mancinelli, vice-president of Local 183, Carmen Principato, business manager of Local 506 and Tony do Vale, secretary treasurer of Local 506, among others. The Portuguese flag was raised at City Hall and at the provincial government building at Queens Park. Etc&tal did coverage of the parade so you will be able to check out photos in this edition of our magazine. Our congratulations to our Portuguese brothers and sisters for their work every year and for keeping the Portuguese traditions alive, especially our Portuguese language.

Kathleen Wynne re-elected Premier of Ontario The ballots confirmed what the opinion polls had been indicating and that was that the Liberal party will continue in power in Ontario. Premier Kathleen Wynn won not only the position as head of the province but also the majority of seats in parliament. This means that any projects put forward by her government will be easily approved and will prevent the need of new elections such as the one that just took place because there was no consensus among the different governments sitting in parliament regarding the approval of the last budget presented by the Liberals, for instance. The Liberal party won 58 seats which means 10 more than the number of seats they had before and 4 more seats than what they needed to win for majority government. Following the Liberals in second came the Progressive Conservative, led by defeated candidate Tim Hudak, with 28 seats, and in third

place came the New Democrats (NDP), with candidate Andrea Horwarth, and they were able to continue to keep their 21 seats in parliament. A closer look at the recent elections shows a province that has become even less conservative and that is leaning towards more liberal ideals. This is proven by the shrinkage of the conservative government in parliament and the proportional increase of supporters for the Liberals. A newcomer to Queens Park is deputy Cristina Martins who will be representing the Davenport region. Others kept their seat in parliament such as Minister of Finance, Charles Sousa, who will continue in the position previously designated to him. We at etc&tal magazine would like to congratulate Ontario Premier, Kathleen Wynne, and her victorious team.

Mini Chefs

“Keeping social issues in mind and part of our agenda has always been our mission and calling at etc&tal since our very first issue six years ago”, explained Isa Melo, editor in chief of the magazine, at the release of the book of recipes created by children. The Mini Chefs Book launch party took place on June 1st at the Via Norte restaurant in Toronto, and it was covered by different media outlets such as Nossa TV Canada, FPTV, OMNI TV and Fala Brasil. The idea of the book first popped up in Isa’s creative mind and out of a personal concern with children’s nutrition and with social causes. She then decided to invite children to send their own recipes that they enjoyed preparing themselves and some recipes also chosen by the author. From that came the decision to donate part of the book sales to two different institutions: ‘Because I am a Girl’, in Toronto, and the ‘Lar do Nenen’, in Recife, where the book will be released at the end of the year. “This is a dream come true and it was made possible only because of the support of people such as Chef Jose Alves who was kind enough to open his restaurant doors and even created his own recipe for children to try. Also the support of people who worked on the making of the book such as Soraia Prevides, responsible for graphic design, and Daniel

Etc&tal releases Mini Chefs Book Oliveira, who translated the recipes, and the photographic work of Joyce Muriel and Praxedes Photography”, explained Isa who is thankful to all of them. There is a total of 20 recipes, both in English and Portuguese, and 17 children from Toronto and 9 from Brazil participated in the project. The contributors to the book who attended the release party enjoyed making their own cupcakes and Gabriella Viciedo Luna made her own recipe in the kitchen with chef Jose Alves. Each mini chef received a kit along with a copy of the book, a Chef’s hat and cookie molds. Isa Melo thank all the children who were part of this beautiful cause and to their parents for support, Cakes n ‘Pastry and especially to Nova Era Pastry bakery where the books will be sold for only CAD$ 10 each.
