Childcare If you don’t have English and maths at GCSE grade 9-4, you will continue to work towards this as part of your main programme of study.

DIPLOMA IN CARING FOR CHILDREN

LEVEL 1 - 1 YEAR WHAT WILL I DO?

Throughout this course you will learn the basics of what it takes to work with babies and children. You will benefit from a combination of theory and practical sessions covering a range of topics including safeguarding, development, health and safety and lots more. You’ll have the chance to put all that you’ve learned into practice on a work placement.

YOU NEED:

A minimum of three GCSEs grade 2 or above, including English language and maths.

WHAT’S NEXT?

DIPLOMA FOR THE EARLY YEARS PRACTITIONER

LEVEL 2 - 1 YEAR WHAT WILL I DO?

You will develop the skills needed to work with babies and young children through a combination of theory and practical sessions. Covering subjects including development, safeguarding, health and safety and organising activities, you will understand how children develop and learn effective techniques for interacting with young children. You’ll also get the chance to apply what you have learnt on a work placement of 250 hours minimum in both day nurseries and school settings.

YOU NEED:

A relevant level 1 qualification or four GCSEs grade 3 or above, including English and maths or Functional Skills Level 1, plus a satisfactory DBS check.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education.

DIPLOMA IN CHILDCARE & EDUCATION

LEVEL 3 - 2 YEARS WHAT WILL I DO?

Further develop the skills you have gained on the level 2 qualification and gain techniques for interacting with young children. Learning through a combination of theory and practical sessions and covering topics such as development, safeguarding, health and safety and organising events, you will be required to complete a work placement in both day nurseries and school settings. This course is to be completed over two years, the first year is to gain a certificate and the second year is for a diploma. There are 375 minimum placement hours allocated to each year.

YOU NEED:

Five GCSEs grade 4-9 including English language or maths or Functional Skills Level 2, plus a satisfactory DBS check.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Move on to higher education in a relevant subject or start work as an early years educator, teaching assistant or in a nursery.
