Preface Prefacio

Preface Early in 2017, the Trump Administration issued new, stricter deportation laws that had many Latin American people in the United States worried. Previously, the Obama Administration instructed the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to focus on undocumented immigrants who were considered to be more of a threat, like criminals.1 The Trump Administration implemented new laws so any undocumented immigrant, even if they are law-abiding members of society, could get deported.2 This is especially frightening for mixed-status families, where some members of a family are legal U.S. citizens, while others are not. Over four million children in America have at least one undocumented parent, while six million children live in mixed-status households.3 This fear has spread throughout the Latin American community all across the nation, even in the state of Indiana.

As of 2014, there is an estimated 12.1 million undocumented immigrants of any race in the U.S.4 According to the Pew Research Center, as of 2016 there is an estimated 426,000 Hispanic people living in the state of Indiana.5 In the 2000 census, 33,290 Hispanic people lived in Marion county; by 2014, an estimated 91,772 Hispanic people lived in Marion county.6 In recent years, there has been a significant increase 1 Haley Sweetland Edwards, “Bye Dad, I Love You: America’s Immigration Policy is Splitting Families and Spreading Fear,” Time Magazine, March 19, 2018, 36.

of Latin American immigration, legal and undocumented, and many people may not realize that the legislature being passed affects the people in their community.

While many initiatives like DACA and the DREAM Act attempt to address the needs of immigrant youth, they do not protect every undocumented child from deportation. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program prevents undocumented children who were brought to the United States from being deported while they are still in school, and it also provides them a work permit.7 The laws for DACA are constantly being updated and revised, but to date, the only people who benefit from DACA are those who were physically present in the United States on June 15, 2012 and came to the United States before their sixteenth birthday, among other requirements.8 That means all new child undocumented immigrants are currently not eligible to apply for DACA, and therefore do not have immunity from deportation. Even those who were eligible for DACA must renew their status every two years, and the family must pay a fee of $495 for renewal,9 which in many cases can be too expensive for families to pay.

Those protected under DACA are often called DREAMers, but the original DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act continually fails to pass Congress since its introduction in 2001.10 The proposed DREAM Act would have granted citizenship to undocumented children who lived and went to school in America,11 but to date, this bill has not passed and does not protect anyone.

harms a child’s psychology and development. Even if an undocumented child is protected under DACA, they fear that they could be deported once they leave school. They do not get a normal transition into adulthood because they do not get to vote12 or have an Indiana driver’s licence.13 If a child is eligible to be deported, this fear can cause depression in children, which can lead to “language deficits, developmental delays, social aggression, and poor academic performance.”14 Children also fear their loved ones being deported; children with a deported parent are more likely to develop depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder.15 They may also experience “sleep and eating disturbances, excessive crying, increased fear, and, in older youth, aggressive and withdrawn behavior, frequently persisting past six months.”16 These undue stressors placed upon children are detrimental to their psychological well-being, which in turn harms their performance in school, ability to create and maintain relationships,17 and their general outlook on life.

This project grows out of many similar efforts of organizations across the United States to collect and publish personal narratives, stories, and memoirs from local youth. through tutoring, workshops, and publishing projects.18 The College Board’s National Commission on Writing and the National Writing Project collaborated to publish “Words Have No Borders,” a collection of stories and letters written by immigrant students across the United States.19 In fall of 2011, Educators for Fair Consideration published a chapbook of youth writing titled Things I’ll Never Say: Stories of Growing Up Undocumented in the United States, which led to a blog that continued collecting immigration narratives from undocumented youth across the country in writing and visual media.20 Locally, the Indiana Writers’ Center has worked with several community organizations to hold summer programs for youth throughout the state to gather their stories and publish them in an anthology titled I Remember: Creative Writing

by Indianapolis Youth.21 We hope to extend these efforts by giving voice to Latin American immigrant and undocumented youth and their families in Indianapolis.

This book provides perspectives from Latin American immigrants of various ages and presents them in a variety of formats, including narrative, interview, and visual art. In order to collect the work shared in the book, we reached out to several community members, educators, and nonprofit organizations, who encouraged contributors to share their stories and perspectives in different ways. Some contributors were interviewed, some shared written versions of their experiences, and some created drawings and verbally discussed their ideas. All work included here has been preserved as closely as possible to the original documents we received in order to maintain authenticity; only minor grammatical and spelling errors were addressed in order to increase readability.

Some pieces are only available in a typed format, some are only available in the original handwritten format, and some are available in both formats. In certain cases, only a typed format was provided to us, while others provided both. Each piece was translated (either from Spanish to English or vice versa) to create a dual-language book.

The contributors’ identities remained hidden from the University of Indianapolis project team throughout the entirety of this project; we cannot trace these stories back to any person or family because they were collected in a manner that kept us as far away from the participants as possible. This not only protects the participants, but it also encouraged them to provide an honest account of their stories and opinions. By providing a safe platform for this population to share their stories, we hope to give local and national audiences additional insight into the lives and struggles of immigrant and undocumented members of our community.

Prefacio A principios de 2017, la Administración de Trump promulgó nuevas leyes de deportación más estrictas que preocuparon a muchos inmigrantes latinos en Estados Unidos.

Anteriormente, la Administración de Obama instruyó a la Oficina de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) que pusiera su atención en todos aquellos inmigrantes indocumentados que suponían una amenaza, o, en otras palabras, se consideraban delincuentes.1 La Administración de Trump implementó leyes nuevas para que cualquier inmigrante indocumentado pudiera ser deportado, incluso aquellos que participan activamente en la sociedad y respetan las leyes.2 Esta ley es particularmente preocupante para las familias de estatus mixto, en las que algunos miembros de la familia son ciudadanos legales de Estados Unidos, mientras que otros no lo son. personas hispanas vivían en el condado de Marion; en 2014, aproximadamente 91.772 personas hispanas vivían en el condado de Marion.6 En los últimos años, ha habido un aumento notable de la inmigración de latinoamericanos, tanto legales como indocumentados, y muchas personas no se dan cuenta de que las leyes impuestas actualmente tienen un gran impacto en las personas de su comunidad.

Aunque programas como DACA y DREAMers tratan de abordar las necesidades de los jóvenes inmigrantes, no protegen a cada niño indocumentado de una posible deportación. El programa de Acción Diferida para Llegadas Infantiles (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés) impide que los niños indocumentados que fueron traídos a Estados Unidos sean deportados mientras que ellos están en la escuela todavía, y también les ofrece un permiso de trabajo.7 Las leyes de DACA se actualizan y revisan continuamente, pero hasta la fecha, solamente las personas que se benefician de DACA son aquellos que estuvieron presentes físicamente en Estados Unidos el 15 de junio de 2012 y llegaron a Estados Unidos antes de cumplir los 16 años, entre otros requisitos.8 Eso significa que, actualmente, todos los niños nuevos que han llegado sin documentación no son elegibles para solicitar DACA, y por lo tanto ellos no son inmunes a la deportación. por el Congreso desde su introducción en 2001.10 La ley DREAM que se propuso habría otorgado la ciudadanía a niños indocumentados que vivían y asistían a la escuela en Estados Unidos,11 pero hasta la fecha, este proyecto de ley no ha sido aprobado y no protege a nadie.

La amenaza de deportación, o la deportación de un ser querido, daña la psicología y el desarrollo de un niño. Aún si un niño indocumentado está protegido por DACA, ellos tienen el temor de que puedan ser deportados al terminar la escuela. excesivas que sufren estos niños son perjudiciales para su bienestar psicológico, lo que a su vez daña su rendimiento en la escuela, su habilidad para crear y mantener relaciones,17 y su perspectiva general en la vida.

Este proyecto surge de muchos esfuerzos similares de organizaciones por todo Estados Unidos con el objetivo de recopilar y publicar narrativas personales, historias, y autobiografías de jóvenes en la comunidad. inmigrantes latinoamericanos y a los jóvenes indocumentados y a sus familias en Indianápolis.

Este libro ofrece las perspectivas de inmigrantes latinos de edades diversas y las presenta en una variedad de formatos, incluyendo narrativa, entrevista, y arte visual. Para recopilar las historias que componen el libro, nos comunicamos con muchos miembros de la comunidad, educadores, organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro, quienes animaron a los narradores a compartir sus historias y perspectivas de diferentes maneras.

What Does It Mean to Be Bilingual/Bicultural in the U.S.?

The following was written by a local teacher who engaged her students in a multimodal project focused on their experiences as immigrants. Samples of student work appear on the following pages.

I have understood and sympathized with the daily struggles that many immigrant families face. This is partly because of my job as an English Language teacher at an urban elementary school. Some of my students are children of immigrants and were born here (i.e. are first generation) while others are immigrants themselves (i.e. were born in their native countries and have memories of their lives there). Many of them still have family and friends living in their native countries, all of which are Latin American countries (mostly Central America and Mexico). The fact that I speak Spanish is very helpful in my work with these students and their families. I didn’t grow up speaking two languages. In fact, I didn’t start learning Spanish until high school, but I was hooked. I went on to add it as major in college and then moved abroad for two years, which is when I became more confident and fluent.

When I was first approached about this project, I was so excited! I feel like so many people are misinformed and misguided in their views on immigration. I started talking to my students about what it means to them to be bilingual/ bicultural and living in the U.S. I had students draw pictures of things they remembered from their home countries or of their favorite traditions with their families. Some students drew pictures showing what they imagine their home countries to be like (if they had never been there or couldn’t remember). I 27

took time to speak one-on-one with these students and wrote down my notes and quotes that stood out to me during these conversations. I wanted to know if they had a preference on which language they spoke (Spanish or English), and I was surprised by some of their answers. Many of them said they prefer to speak English, especially at school and in social settings, but they also said that if they are upset they like to be able to express themselves in Spanish to someone who can understand. Overall, they all like being able to speak both languages, and I think that’s pretty cool!

As the immigration debate has become increasingly political, and, in my opinion, hostile, my passion for these communities has only grown. I have seen first-hand the struggles that these families face in moving to a new country, learning a new language, and trying to build a new life for themselves and their loved ones. While there are resources and organizations set up to help those who want or need it, many of the opportunities go unused because of the distrust and fear that has been created in the current political climate. This fear and distrust exists for legal immigrants, too. Sadly, this fear and distrust is warranted in both legal and illegal immigrants.

As the topic of immigration becomes increasingly discussed, I encourage people to look deeply at their lives and think about what you would do if the roles were reversed. How far would you go for the safety of your family? What would you do?

¿Qué es significa ser bilingüe/bicultural en Estados Unidos?

El siguiente testimonio fue escrito por una maestra local que involucro a sus estudiantes en un proyecto multimodal enfocado en sus experiencias como inmigrantes. Algunas muestras del trabajo de los estudiantes aparecen en las páginas siguientes.

Siempre he comprendido y me han conmocionado las dificultades diarias a las que muchas familias de inmigrantes se enfrentan. Esto se debe en parte a mi trabajo como maestra de ingles en una escuela primaria de la ciudad. Algunos de mis estudiantes son hijos de inmigrantes y nacieron aquí (i.e. son de primera generación), mientras otros son inmigrantes (i.e. nacieron en su país natal y tienen recuerdos de sus vidas allí).

Muchos de ellos todavía tienen familia y amigos que viven en sus países natales, los cuales son países latinoamericanos (mayormente Centroamérica y México). El hecho de que yo hable español es muy práctico en mi trabajo con estos estudiantes y sus familias. No crecí hablando dos idiomas.

De hecho, no empecé a aprender español hasta la escuela secundaria, pero me encantó. Continué estudiándolo como mi especialidad en la universidad y luego me mudé al extranjero durante dos años, que es cuando gané más confianza y soltura en la lengua.

Cuando se dirigieron a mí por primera vez sobre este proyecto, ¡me emocioné mucho! Siento que muchas personas están mal informadas y equivocadas sobre su idea de la inmigración. Empecé a hablar con mis estudiantes sobre lo que significa para ellos ser bilingüe/bicultural y vivir en Estados Unidos. Les pedí que hicieran dibujos de cosas que recordaban de sus países natales o de sus tradiciones favoritas 29

con sus familias. Algunos estudiantes dibujaron imágenes que mostraban cómo se imaginaban sus países natales (si ellos nunca habían ido allí o no podían recordar). Me dediqué a hablar uno a uno con estos estudiantes y escribí mis propias notas y citas de lo que más me llamó la atención durante estas conversaciones. Quería saber si ellos tenían una preferencia de que idioma preferían hablar (español o inglés), y me sorprendieron algunas de las respuestas. Muchos de ellos me dijeron que preferían hablar inglés, especialmente en la escuela y en entornos sociales, pero también me dijeron que, cuando están enojados, les gusta poder expresarse en español con alguien que lo entienda. En general, a todos les gusta el hecho de que pueden hablar los dos idiomas, ¡y pienso que eso está muy bien!

Mientras que el debate de inmigración se ha hecho cada vez más político y, en mi opinión, más hostil, mi pasión por estas comunidades ha crecido mucho más. He visto directamente las dificultades a las que estas familias se enfrentan al mudarse a un país nuevo, aprender un idioma nuevo, y tratar de crear una vida nueva para ellos mismos y sus seres queridos. Aunque hay recursos y organizaciones que se han creado para ayudar a las personas que los quieran o los necesiten, muchas de las oportunidades no se aprovechan debido a la desconfianza y el miedo que existe en el actual clima político. Este miedo y esta desconfianza también se observan en los inmigrantes legales.

Tristemente, estos sentimientos de miedo y desconfianza son visibles tanto en los inmigrantes documentados como en los indocumentados. A medida que el tema de inmigración se discute más, animo a que examinemos en profundidad sobre nuestras vidas y pensemos sobre en lo que haríamos si los papeles estuvieran invertidos. ¿Hasta dónde irías por la seguridad de tu familia? ¿Qué harías?

A Flight to Happiness I was born in a beautiful town filled with kind people, trees, and flowers. It is called Empalme Escobedo, Municipality of Comonfort, Guanajuato, Mexico. There were always a lot of people in the streets.

In this place, the people can travel by horse, bicycle, car, or by foot. At dawn, everyone was coming and going through the streets. There were also some stray dogs, and children playing.

I had a little bicycle and I went out to play in the street. I have two siblings, Angel and Diana. They love me a lot. Also, I have many cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and my mom, who worked in a hospital.

My brother had a horse and I had a dog named “Shepherd” because he was a German Shepherd. I went to a daycare called Toy World, and then to a kindergarten called Christopher Columbus School. I was a very happy child with my mom and siblings, but I had never seen my father. I knew that he was somewhere, but I didn’t understand why he was not with us.

One day we went to the United States Embassy in Mexico City and they gave us a visa. My mom left crying tears of joy with a few white papers in her hand that the man from the American Consulate gave her through a window. Now she was as happy as I was. My mother prepared two brightly colored suitcases, she said it was for them to not get lost; I still remember that one was green and the other was orange, both fluorescent. I asked, “where are we going?” And my mother answered, “on our way to happiness.” Mom took several documents, put them in a folder, and told me that they would let us board a plane with them.

Days later we arrived at the Mexico City International Airport. There were some enormous planes. I was surprised and very excited. My mom told me they were the same planes that I saw that were so small in the sky. I knew that it would be a big adventure. We got on one of them and the plane took off until we were higher than the clouds. When I looked through the window, I opened my eyes and mouth very big—we were 51

really flying high! It was as the waltz dance said when I left preschool: “I will fly, I will fly, to the sky I will fly.” We were very close to the sky, but very far from my brothers, my house, and my dog, Shepherd.

My mom was so excited. We got to Houston, Texas and I thought that we would see my father there, but mom said no, that he was not there. She said that we would get on another plane and we would arrive in Indianapolis, Indiana and my father would be there. He was! When we got off the plane and left the airport, I saw my father in a big, white van. I started to jump and lift my arms so that he could see me. We ran to hug each other and cried tears of joy, our hearts were beating so fast.

The day after arriving in Indianapolis I entered a new school. I was very excited, because I was going to meet new friends and new teachers. But, when I got to school I felt out of place, as if I was in a different world because I understood nothing. I had to be very strong not to cry at school, but when I came home I started to cry. I told my mom that I did not understand anything they talked about and that I was very sad because I couldn’t do the work that the teacher told us to do because I did not understand the language. My mom was sad too and cried with me. She hugged me and said, “Son, you are very smart, you will learn the language very quickly.” So, one week went by and I still didn’t understand anything, and once again I started to cry at home. I told my dad to move me to a school where they speak Spanish, but my dad said, “Sorry son, here there are no schools where they speak Spanish. Give it a little more effort and you’ll see that you will learn soon.”

So I did, and with the help of a teacher I learned the language very quickly. I will always be thankful to all my teachers and classmates who helped me learn the English language!

After many months, I started to learn a lot more and started to communicate with my teachers and classmates. At that moment, I remembered a saying that my grandpa used to tell me: “You can do anything you put your mind to.”

In this country I have found people that are beautiful, 52

good, and very kind. I am happy, but I miss my family!

I also want to tell you that my dog “Shepherd” died from sadness. He died after a long year of sitting at the door of my house back in Mexico waiting for my mom and me. My grandfather also died. I will never see them again.

We have had some problems here. The white van that my dad took to the airport to pick me up was stolen with all his work tools inside. They didn’t leave anything for him to work.

My father had worked many years to get all those valuable tools for his roofing work. This made me sad, because now my dad has no tools for work. However, my dad is working very hard to buy new tools that he needs and another van, but he says it will take a lot of time and a lot of work; I ask God to help him. I love my dad very much and when I see him sad, I also get sad.

But life goes on, and my mom says that we should keep at it because it is a big blessing to be in this country. I’m in fourth grade and my mom tells me to dedicate myself to studying very hard. I love coming to school!

Thanks to all the people who have given us a helping hand in some way and have supported us. This has been very valuable to us. I have many dreams, like being a pilot or a soldier, and I know I will achieve it. My mom says that everyone will become what they dream! Thanks to my family, teachers, and friends. God bless you. I want you all to know that you will always be in my mind and in my heart.

Un vuelo rumbo a la felicidad Nací en un hermoso pueblo lleno de gente linda, árboles y flores, llamado Empalme Escobedo, municipio de Comonfort, Guanajuato, México, en sus calles siempre había mucha gente.

En este lugar la gente podía andar a caballo, bicicletas, carros o a pie, al amanecer todos andaban yendo y viniendo por sus calles, también había algunos perros callejeros y niños jugando, yo tenía una pequeña bicicleta y salía a jugar a la calle, tengo dos hermanos Angel y Diana, ellos me aman mucho; tengo muchos primos, tíos, abuelos y mi madre que trabajaba en un hospital.

Mi hermano tenía un caballo y yo un perro llamado “Pastor” porque era un pastor alemán, fui a una guardería “mundo de juguete”, y posteriormente a kínder Garden llamado colegio “Cristóbal Colón” era un niño muy feliz con mi madre y hermanos, pero nunca había visto a mi papá, yo sabía que estaba en algún lugar pero no comprendía por qué no estaba con nosotros.

Un día fuimos a la embajada de Estados Unidos en la Ciudad de México y nos dieron una visa, mi madre salió llorando de alegría, con unas hojas blancas en la mano que le dio el señor del Consulado Americano por una ventanilla; ahora también ella era feliz al igual que yo; mi madre preparo dos maletas de colores muy llamativos, dijo que para que no se nos perdieran, aun las recuerdo una era verde y la otra color naranja, ambas fluorescentes; yo pregunté ¿a dónde vamos?

Y mamá contestó “rumbo a la felicidad.” Mamá tomó varios documentos, los puso dentro de una carpeta, y me dijo que con ellos nos dejarían abordar un avión.

Días después llegamos al aeropuerto internacional de la ciudad de México, ahí había unos enormes aviones, yo estaba sorprendido y muy emocionado, mi mamá me dijo que eran los aviones que yo veía muy chiquitos en el cielo, sabía que 54

iba a ser una gran aventura; nos subimos a uno de ellos y el avión se elevó hasta más arriba de las nubes, cuando vi por la ventanilla abrí los ojos y la boca bien grandes—realmente estábamos volando muy alto, tal cual lo decía el vals que baile cuando salí del pre escolar: “volare y volare por cielo volare.”

Estábamos muy cerca del cielo pero lejos de mis hermanos, mi casa y mi perro Pastor.

Mi mamá estaba muy emocionada; llegamos a Houston, Texas y pensé que ahí veríamos a mi papá, pero mamá me dijo que no, que ahí no estaba, que subiriamos a otro avión y que nos llevaría a lndianápolis, Indiana y que ahí estaría mi papá, y así fue, al bajar del avión y salir del aeropuerto, vi a mi padre en una van blanca muy grande, yo empecé a saltar y a levantar mis brazos para que me viera, corrimos a abrazarlo y lloramos de alegría, nuestros corazones latían muy fuerte.

Al día siguiente de haber llegado a lndianápolis entré una nueva escuela, me sentía muy emocionado, pues iba a conocer nuevos amigos y nuevos maestros, pero al llegar a la escuela me sentí muy extraño como en un mundo diferente pues no entendía nada, tuve que ser muy fuerte para no llorar en la escuela, pero llegando a casa me puse a llorar y le dije a mi mamá que no entendía nada de lo que hablaban y que me sentía muy triste porque no podía hacer los trabajos que decía la maestra ya que no entendía el idioma, mi mamá también se puso triste y lloró conmigo, me abrazó y me dijo “hijo tú eres muy inteligente, pronto aprenderás el idioma,” así pasó una semana y yo no entendía nada, una vez más me puse a llorar en casa y le dije a mi papá que me cambiara de escuela a una donde hablaran español, pero mi papá me dijo “lo siento hijo aquí no hay escuelas donde hablen español, échale muchas ganas y ya verás que muy pronto vas a aprender”, así lo hice, y con la ayuda de una maestra aprendí muy rápido el idioma. ¡Siempre estaré agradecido con todas mis maestras y compañeros que me ayudaron a aprender el idioma inglés!

Pasaron unos meses, empecé a entender mucho más y a comunicar con mis maestras y compañeros, en ese momento me acordé de un dicho que decía mi abuelo: “el que es perico 55

donde quiera es verde.”

En este país he encontrado personas hermosas, buenas y muy amables, ¡estoy feliz!, pero extraño a mi familia.

También quiero contarles que mi perro “pastor” murió de tristeza, después de un largo año que nos esperó a mi mamá y a mí, sentado en la puerta de mi casa allá en México, también murió mi abuelo y ya nunca los volveré a ver.

Aquí hemos tenido algunos problemas, la van blanca en la que me fue a esperar mi papá al aeropuerto, se la robaron con toda su herramienta de trabajo adentro, no le dejaron nada para trabajar, mi padre había trabajado muchos años para tener toda esa valiosa herramienta para su trabajo en el roofing, eso a mí también me puso triste, pues ahora mi papá no tiene herramienta para trabajar, sin embargo, mi papá está trabajando muy duro para ir comprando nuevamente la herramienta que necesita y otra van, aunque dice que le tomará mucho tiempo y mucho trabajo; le pido a Dios que lo ayude, yo quiero mucho a mi papá y cuando lo veo triste, yo también me pongo triste.

Pero la vida sigue para adelante, y mi mamá dice que debemos de echarle muchas ganas, porque es una gran bendición estar en este país. Ya voy en cuarto grado y mi mamá dice que me dedique a estudiar muy duro y a mi ¡me encanta venir a la escuela!

Gracias a todas las personas que de alguna manera nos han dado una mano amiga y nos han apoyado, porque eso ha sido muy valioso para para nosotros. Tengo muchos sueños, como ser piloto aviador o soldado, y sé que lo voy a lograr; mi mamá dice que cada quien será del tamaño de sus sueños!

Gracias a familia, maestros y amigos, que Dios los bendiga, quiero que sepan que siempre estarán en mi mente y en mi corazón.

I Am Eleven Years Old I am eleven years old, and my story starts eleven years ago.

I was born in the United States. My parents are from Mexico but met in the United States. We traveled back to Mexico when I was two years old. My mom always told me that we would come back the United States, but I didn’t know when. Two years ago we were going to come, but then my little sister was born so we stayed. In Mexico, I went to school and learned a lot. Some of my cousins from the United States moved to my town. When they arrived, they didn’t know how to speak a lot of Spanish. It was funny talking to them because their accent sounded silly. In January, my mom told me that we were going to the United States, but in separate airplanes and leaving from different cities. The reason is because I am a United States citizen and my mom and sisters are not. So one day my dad and I got on a bus and traveled far away to an airport so that I could travel to the United States by myself. I cried when my dad left me at the airport. It was very hard to say goodbye. I didn’t want to leave Mexico. My dad reminded me that I always need to be brave, like a warrior; just like the times that I had to get shots at the doctor. A flight attendant came to take me to the airplane.

I felt alone, but I couldn’t jump off the airplane even though I wanted to. The flight attendants helped me when we arrived in Texas and changed planes. When I arrived in Indianapolis, my aunt was waiting for me and brought me to her house. When my cousin saw me, she knocked me over with excitement. A few weeks passed, and I missed my mom. After two weeks my mom and sisters finally arrived, and I went with my aunt to pick them up at the airport. I cried when I saw them. I hugged them so tight. I have been here for ten weeks now and it is hard and some days I want to go back to Mexico. I miss my dad so much. But I know that I must work hard at learning English so that I can have a good career. I want to be a pilot.

Tengo once años Tengo once años y mi historia empieza hace once años.

Nací aquí en Estados Unidos. Mis padres son de México, pero se conocieron aquí. Regresamos a México cuando yo tenía dos anos. Mi mami siempre me dijo que íbamos a regresar a Estados Unidos, pero no sabía cuándo. Hace dos años pensé que íbamos a venir, pero nació mi hermanita entonces nos quedamos en México. En México yo fui a la escuela y aprendí mucho. Unos primos míos se mudaron a mi pueblo desde Estado Unidos y cuando llegaron no sabían hablar mucho español. Fue chistoso hablar con ellos porque su acento sonaba chistoso. En enero mi mami me dijo que íbamos a venir a Estados Unidos, pero en aviones separados y saliendo de ciudades diferentes. La razón es que soy ciudadana de Estados Unidos y mi mami y mis hermanas no son ciudadanas. Entonces un día mi papá me llevó lejos en autobús a un aeropuerto para que yo pueda viajar aquí solita. Lloraba cuando mi papi me dejó en el aeropuerto.

Fue muy difícil decir adiós. No me quería venir. Mi papi me recordó que siempre tengo que ser valiente como las guerreras como las veces que los doctores me inyectaron. Entonces un aeromozo vino para llevarme al avión. Me sentí muy solita pero no podría brincarme del avión aunque quería. Los aeromozos me ayudaron cuando llegamos en Texas y cambiamos aviones.

Cuando llegue a Indianápolis mi tía me estaba esperando y me llevó a su casa. Mi prima me tiro por felicidad de verme. Pasó unas semanas y extrañe a mi mamá. Después de dos semanas llego mi mamá y mis hermanas y fui con mi tía al aeropuerto para recogerlas. Lloré cuando la vi. Las abrace muy fuerte.

Llevo diez semanas aquí y es duro a veces quiero regresar a México. Extraño mucho a mi papi, pero tengo que echarle ganas a las ingles para que pueda tener mi carrera. Quiero ser piloto.

Mama, Why Are You Packing?

“Mama, why are you packing?” I asked. “We are going somewhere,” she responded. I started thinking about all of the places where I wanted to go. I asked my aunt if she knew where we were going. She said that she did, but it was a secret.

Early the next morning, my mom woke my brother and I up to go to the airport. “Ma, are we going to fly on an airplane?

I’ve never been on one before,” I said. When we started flying I was afraid that the plane would fall from the sky. We landed in Tijuana and they locked us in a room for four days with about fifteen people. We never knew what time it was because we couldn’t see outside, and we didn’t have our phones. They brought us food two or three times a day. One morning they brought us a van to take us to the border so that we could cross into California. We went to the airport and took another plane to Chicago. My aunt was waiting with her car in Chicago and she brought us to Indianapolis. I felt alone because everyone was speaking English and I missed my family. But, I remembered that my uncle told me to work hard at learning a new language so that I can have a better future.

¿Mamá, porque estas empacando? “¿Mamá, porque estas empacando?” le pregunté. “Vamos a ir a un lado” me respondió. Me quede pensando en todos los lugares que yo quisiera ir. Pregunte a mi tía que si sabía dónde íbamos a ir. Dijo que sí, pero fue un secreto. Entonces muy temprano en la siguiente mañana mi mamá levanto mi hermano y yo para ir hacia el aeropuerto. “Ma, vamos a ir en un avión, nunca me he subido en uno” le dije. Cuando subí el avión y empezó a volar en el aire yo tuve miedo de que el avión iba a caer del cielo. Bajamos en Tijuana y nos encerraron en un cuarto por cuatro días con casi quince personas. Nunca supimos la hora que era porque no pudimos ver afuera y no tenemos celular. Nos trajeron comida dos o tres veces al día.

Un día por la mañana nos llevaron a una camioneta para poder cruzar la frontera y entrar a California. Fuimos al aeropuerto y subimos un avión para Chicago. Mi tía nos esperó con su camioneta en Chicago y nos trajo a Indianápolis. Sentí solo porque todos estaban hablando en inglés y extrañé a mi familia.

Pero recordé algo que dijo mi tío de echarle ganas en aprender un nuevo idioma para tener un mejor futuro.

Una Experiencia Inolvidable (An Unforgettable Experience) In the year 2011, my mom decided to go to Mexico. The reason was that my sister’s father was deported. My mom thought that my sister would miss him a lot. For a week, we visited all our aunts and uncles who live in Indiana. We used to have a van with a Scooby-Doo sticker at the back right-side of the van. My mom sold the van to get enough money to go to Mexico. My sister and I thought we were going on a plane but my mom didn’t want to go on a plane. I think my mom was scared to go on a plane. We used to live in our aunt and uncle’s house. My Aunt Lety sold us these suitcases to put our clothes in. After that day, we went to our old school to tell them that we aren’t going back to school.

I remember that every time when the whole family was going somewhere, we rode our cars in a line driving through.

Everytime when any of our family members needed gasoline, we waited in the same gas station, even though it could be a small gas station. My mom wanted my sisters to have their birthday party before going to Mexico. They were turning six and five years. Their names are Jackelin and Gizel. My baby sister was only two years old. After the party, we were packing our stuff, ready to go.

It was the big day. The day to go to Mexico. We went to our aunt’s car because my mom already sold ours. At the bus station, it took my mom a full hour just to register and pay.

I remember we needed to go in the morning very early. My mom gave us each one of us a bottle full of Honey Cheerios with milk. I didn’t listen to my mom of eating the cereal right away; we were suppose to save it for two days!

Three days and two nights later, we have finally arrived.

My mom’s aunt was waiting for us. She drove us to her house.

Other people were living in the house. I ask “Tia Flor” if she knew any of these people. She told me that these people rented one of the rooms. I remember that she gave us food of French Fries and eggs. My “Tio Carlos” was at work and he would return at night.

After a week we went to a “Tianguis!” It’s like a flea market but everybody knew each other! My mom bought me a bag full of “Canicas.” The word canicas is the word marbles but in Spanish. My mom always carries her purse that contains all our information and I thought I can help with the purse.

Then we went to a public bus called “Micro.” It was full of people. Everytime we stopped because even more people got on. Once we arrived, I left the purse at the Micro! My mom felt disappointed at me for losing the purse.

Couple weeks later, my sister’s dad came. In that times, the game called Angry Birds was very popular. He had a big black bag full of his clothes. A month later, he started to work as a mechanic. I discovered that the money in Mexico is called “pesos.” The money was in coins and paper money. I think they’re much bigger than dollars.

On December 12, my “Tia Flor” was going on a trip. The place was called “La Villita.” It was in the middle of Mexico City. It was like a church but the biggest one in Mexico. Once my “Tia Flor” and me arrive, we enter inside and it was huge!

There were those church seats, there were also flags of the entire world, but most of all, there was a huge picture of “La Virgen de Guadalupe.” It’s Jesus’s mother. After that we came back home.

My mom wanted to visit her mom and dad. Papa Fransisco and Mamá Consuelo were their names. [...] We also met uncles, aunts, and cousin that I never knew. I don’t want to be rude but the house of my grandparents didn’t look like a good house.

We made Mexican food in there and had lots of fun.

Now it is our turn to visit my sister’s father’s parents.

“Abuelita Carmel” was her name. I also met more family. This cousin I had named Fransisco had the same birthday date and me, but he was one year older than me.

After two years of being in Mexico, my mom decided to go back to the United States of America. It was hard because without our papers, we were lost. My mom found the solution and we went back, but this time it was on a plane! Once we arrived, all our family came. My “Tia Lety” asked me a question, she asked, “How was Mexico?” I responded “una experiencia inolvidable!!!”

Una experiencia inolvidable En el año 2011, mi madre decidió ir a México. La razón fue que el padre de mi hermana fue deportado. Mi madre pensó que mi hermana lo extrañaría mucho. Por una semana, visitamos a todos nuestros tíos y tías que viven en Indiana.

Teníamos una furgoneta con una pegatina de Scooby-Doo en la parte posterior del lado derecho pero mi madre vendió la furgoneta para obtener suficiente dinero para ir a México. Mi hermana y yo pensamos que íbamos a ir en avión, pero mi mamá no quería ir en avión. Creo que mi madre tenía miedo de volar. Vivíamos en la casa de nuestra tía y tío. Mi tía Lety nos vendió unas maletas para poner nuestra ropa. Después de ese día, fuimos a nuestra escuela antigua para decirles que no íbamos a regresar más.

Recuerdo que cada vez que toda la familia iba a algún lugar, todos conducíamos en juntos en línea. Cuando alguno de los miembros de la familia necesitaba gasolina, esperábamos en la misma gasolinera, incluso si era pequeña. Mi madre quería que mis hermanas tuvieran su fiesta de cumpleaños antes de salir a México. Cumplían seis y cinco años. Sus nombres son Jackelin y Gizel. Mi hermana pequeñita sola tenía dos años.

Después de la fiesta, empezamos a empacar nuestras cosas preparándonos para nuestro viaje.

El día que nos fuimos a México fue un gran día. Fuimos en el coche de nuestra tía porque mi mamá ya vendió el nuestro. En la estación de autobuses, mi mamá tardó una hora completa sólo para registrarnos y pagar. Recuerdo que tuvimos que salir muy temprano en la mañana. A cada uno de nosotros mi madre nos dio una botella llena de cereales y leche. ¡No presté atención a mi madre al decirnos que debíamos guardarlo durante dos días y no comerlo de inmediato!

Finalmente llegamos, tres días y dos noches después. La tía de mi madre estaba esperándonos. Ella nos llevó a su casa 69

donde otras personas estaban viviendo también. Pregunté a Tía Flor si ella conocía a alguna de estas personas y ella me dijo que estas personas alquilaban una de las habitaciones en la casa. Recuerdo que ella nos dio papas fritas y huevos para comer. Tío Carlos estaba trabajando y él regresaría por la noche. ¡Después de una semana, fuimos a un Tianguis! ¡Es como un mercado, pero todos se conocen! Mi mamá me compró una bolsa llena de canicas. Ella siempre cargaba en su bolsa toda nuestra información y pensé que podría ayudarla a llevarla. Fuimos al autobús público micro, y estaba lleno de gente. Cada vez que parábamos, incluso más gente entraba.

Cuando llegamos, ¡dejé la bolsa en el micro! Mi madre estaba decepcionada conmigo por perder la bolsa.

Unas pocas semanas después, el padre de mi hermana vino. Él tenía una bolsa negra grande llena de ropa. En ese tiempo, el juego llamado Angry Birds era muy popular. Un mes después, empezó a trabajar como mecánico. Aprendí que el dinero en México se llama pesos. El dinero es monedas y papel moneda, creo que son mucho más grandes que los dólares.

En diciembre de 2012, mi Tía Flor se fue de viaje. El lugar se llamaba La Villita. Estaba en el centro de la Ciudad de México. Era como una iglesia, pero la más grande de México.

Una vez que mi Tía Flor y yo llegamos, entramos, y ¡dentro era enorme! Había esos asientos de la iglesia y también las banderas del mundo entero, pero, sobre todo, había una gran imagen de “la Virgen de Guadalupe”, la madre de Jesús.

Después de eso, volvimos a casa.

Mi mamá quería visitar a sus padres, Papa Francisco y Mamá Consuelo. [...] También conocimos a tíos, tías y primos que nunca había conocido. No quiero ser grosero, pero la casa de mis abuelos no parecía una buena casa. Pero, hicimos comida mexicana allí y lo pasamos muy bien.

Entonces era el turno de visitar a la madre del padre de mi hermana. Su nombre era “Abuelita Carmel.” Conocí a otros familiares también. Un primo que se llamaba Francisco, tenía 70

el mismo cumpleaños que yo, pero él era uno año mayor.

Después de dos años de estar en México, mi mamá decidió que nos mudáramos de nuevo a Estados Unidos. Fue difícil porque sin nuestros papeles, estábamos perdidos. ¡Mi mamá encontró la solución y volvimos, pero esta vez en un avión! Una vez que llegamos, toda nuestra familia vino. Mi tía Lety me preguntó “¿cómo estuvo México?” Respondí “¡¡¡una experiencia inolvidable!!!”

I Needed to Help My Family I came to the United States when I was about fourteen years old. I had to make the decision to come to the United States because I needed to help my family. We needed money for the necessities, but there were no opportunities. My family was eight people, and what my parents earned was not much and usually it was not sufficient for us. When I came here, it was difficult because I had to cross the border illegally, which is dangerous. When I crossed the border it was hard, but not as much as it is now. We crossed though the river which took us approximately two days because we had to stop to rest in order to have the strength to continue. When we arrived, we were in Texas. I worked in the fields there for a while and then started working in construction. It was difficult because many times they paid less for being undocumented and they also paid less to the youngest or to the oldest. After several years and a lot of work, I have been able to fix my documents and become an American citizen. Although I am now an American citizen there are still some things that I have not been able to obtain, such as health insurance.

Necesitaba ayudar a mi familia Yo me vine a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía aproximadamente catorce años. Tuve que tomar la decisión de venirme para los Estados Unidos porque necesitaba ayudar a mi familia. Pues necesitábamos dinero para lo necesario pero no avra oportunidades. Mi familia era de ocho y con lo que mis papas ganaban no era mucho y normalmente no nos ajustaba. Cuando llegué acá fue difícil pues tuve que cruzar la frontera de forma ilegal lo cual es peligroso cuando yo cruce la frontera fue difícil pero no tanto como ahora. Nosotros cursamos por el río lo cual nos tomó aproximadamente dos días pues tuvimos que parar para descansar para tener fuerzas para seguir. Después de llegar llegamos a Texas. Ahi trabaje en los campos por un tiempo y despues empezo a trabajar en la construcción. Muchas veces era difícil pues nos pagaban menos por ser indocumentados y muchas veces también nos pagaban menos a los más chicos o a los mayores. Después de varios años y de mucho trabajo eh podido arreglar mis documentos y convertirme en un ciudadano americano. Aunque ahora soy ciudadano americano aún se encuentran algunas cosas en las que no eh podido obtener como seguro de salud médica.

This Is My Story Hello, I am from Honduras. I am thirty-three years old. I would like to tell my story. For me, this is very hard, but it is good for me to tell a little bit about my life because this helps me forget what I have gone through during these thirty-three years of life. I was abandoned by my parents when I was eight years old. That’s when everything started. I was mistreated by people and I didn’t have anything to eat. I would eat tree leafs so that I could survive. Otherwise, I would starve. But I was a girl that knew how to continue despite everything I went through. I never got into any bad habits. I would work to be able to wear clothes and shoes. I grew up on the streets because I didn’t have anywhere to live. A man took me by force for ten years. He was the father of my three children.

I do not regret having my children, because they are a gift from God. My children made me stronger because I wanted to take my life with all of the abuse that I was experiencing. I didn’t want to live. For me, it was a very hard life because I didn’t have anybody to help me. From there, I came to Belize with my second partner but it didn’t go well there either. I decided to come to the United States with him. When we arrived in Mexico, something really terrible that I never thought would happen happened to us. The Mexican immigration caught us.

It was hell because they separated me from my children. There was a problem in Immigration with my partner that was coming from there. I was alone. In order to recuperate my children, I was living in a hostal with nuns that were treating me very badly. I thought that leaving my country, I would be away from bad people but no. In Mexico, I also went through really tough times. I had an accident but luckily I survived. I thought I was going to die, but God gave me another opportunity to fight for my kids. From there, I decided to cross the United States. Here, I haven’t been mistreated. On the contrary, I have received a lot of support from people that have given me their hand. Here, there are many good people. I have only come 81

here with one goal: to move on with my children. I want to show people that despite the difficulties, one has to fight in life. Otherwise, you can’t move on. I feel happy here because I found peace. I am not afraid of anything because in my country every hour is dangerous due to crime. That’s why I left. This is my story. I have much more to tell but I don’t like to remember because it makes me feel bad. Thank you for listening to me and I appreciate all the support that people have given me. God bless you every day. Many Nights I Cried, but with Patience I Learned I was a single mother of one daughter. She was three years old and my father was sick and I didn’t have a job. This was when I decided to leave my daughter with my parents and look for an opportunity in the United States. I took a truck to the city of Agua Prieta where I was for two days. On the third day, many of us started to walk. After one day, we no longer had food or water. Our journey was two days and two nights. On the last day, we found water! It was a drinking trough for cows, but we drank it. At around two in the morning there was a truck for all of us and it took us to Arizona. We arrived hungry, cold, tired, and with only the clothes on our backs and certainly, very dirty. During the week we found work in Indianapolis.

It was very hard because of the language and because I didn’t know how to drive. Many nights I cried, but with patience I learned. After three years, I returned for my daughter. Today she is with me and I also have another daughter that was born in the USA. Thank you to this country and more than anything, to its people for their support.

Muchas noches lloré, pero con paciencia aprendí Yo era mamá soltera de una hija. Ella tenía tres años y enfermo mi papá no tenía trabajo y fue cuando decidí dejar a mi hija con mis padres y buscar una oportunidad en Estados Unidos. Tome un camión rumbo a agua prieta ahi estube dos dias. Al tercer día varias personas empezamos a caminar. En un dia ya no teníamos comida ni agua. Nuestro trayecto fue dos dias y dos noches. En el último día encontramos agua en bebederos de vacas aun así la vimos. Como a las dos de la mañana fue una camioneta por nosotros y nos llevó a Arizona y llegamos con hambre, frío, sueño, y solo la ropa que teníamos puesta, por cierto muy sucia. Como a la semana encontré trabajo en Indianápolis. Fue difícil por el idioma y porque no sabía manejar. Muchas noches lloré pero con paciencia he ido aprendiendo. A los tres años regrese por mi hija y hoy esta con migo y tambien nacio en USA mi otra hija la mas chica.

We Did Not Come to Harm This Country Before coming to this country, everything was different.

My husband had a job in the government, serving as a state police officer and later, as a distinguished bodyguard for the mayor. Everything was very good. In spite of the drastically rising violence, we lacked nothing. One day, they invited my husband to join the organized crime which he didn’t accept.

He detested the corruption and did not join. From then on, came threats against him and the family. They were watching us. They knew our names, addresses, and more.

So, without a doubt, we saw the need to go somewhere else. So, we left our three children in the care of their paternal grandmother for forty days while we found work so we could buy them a bed, and the necessary things to bring them with us. The only advantage that we had was that this was a border town. We got a house and we slept there on the floor and it was so hot. So, the days passed by and we found work at a market peeling tomatillos. We had to walk a lot. One day, I could not handle it and the veins inside of my left leg burst.

It hurt so much, but thank God the pain went away. When we bought what we needed, we returned for our children and to our surprise they had been brutally abused by their grandmother. They wouldn’t stop crying, because this had caused a lot of trauma. Their grandmother returned to where she lived, taking with her a moving truck with all of our belongings in it which was everything we had after years of hard work, but at that moment, the only thing that mattered to us was to leave this dangerous situation. We left for the state of Veracruz, in our car, headed for the border, all together again.

We arrived, and we got settled.

Everyone had their passports and tourist visas, so we used this opportunity to work in Hidalgo, Texas. Three or four times 92

a week, we would go there and return the same day. There, we and our children witnessed of a lot of violence. Every minute of the day there were crimes everywhere, causing fear in people.

They would set fire to more than ten public transportation vehicles, to houses, and kill recklessly without the least amount of mercy. We saw many mutilated bodies, young kids hanging on the pedestrian bridge, but the worst thing was seeing how ruthless they were with innocent children, even entire families.

This was too much for us, but it was the only place where we had a house and work.

We would only leave the house to go to work and to leave the kids with my sister that lived very close to our house. Even then we could not avoid the kids witnessing the conflicts that were so commonplace. Every day, we would listen to people say that here and there they found people without heads or other violent stories. My kids would say “Let’s go somewhere else. We don’t want to die, not in this cruel way. We endured grandma’s abuse. She hit us with sticks with nails, she fed us eggs with shells, and she forced us to wash her clothes by hand. She also punched us in the head. And, when she bathed us, she scrubbed our private parts so hard until they bled, but this pain is nothing comparable to this horror.”

My eyes filled with tears when I heard this and this was when we decided to do something. We tried to get a tourist permit for the family but we didn’t meet the requirements. I was very sad and felt very helpless. So, everything continued the same until one day when I got to the house. It was completely uninhabitable. It had been robbed, everything from the doors, protection, all of the light cables, and even the things in the bathroom.

A friend offered us her house that was empty, and she gave us some things. My sister also helped us a lot. Then we found out that it had been done by people that were sent from Veracruz to intimidate us, or rather to make our family disappear, but fortunately, they didn’t find us when they came.

So, we trusted God and again we tried to get the permit to be able to leave the country. Finally, God heard us, and they gave 93

it to us immediately. The only thing that we had to do was to save some money for the trip.

It was no more than fifteen days before they granted us the permit, but one early morning we saw a suspicious truck going around where we lived. A neighbor was awake and she told me that they were people from ‘la maña,’ a criminal group. Again, the panic took over us and we decided to leave with the clothes and money that we had. It was not enough, but we only wanted to escape somewhere else, to a place as far as we could go. So, we drove and arrived to this city that we had never heard of before.

We just allowed God to guide us to our destiny. When we arrived, it was almost six in the afternoon and it was very cold.

No one had a sweater, we only had summer clothes. We went to a church to ask for help, but at this time in the afternoon, there was almost no one there. Besides, they spoke English here. Fortunately, my husband knew a little and was able to understand some. We went to another church and there we met some very lovely African women. We did not expect what they did for us. They took us to buy plenty of food and lodged us in a hotel that was very beautiful. So, we ate dinner, we bathed, and we slept very well since only the children slept during the trip but they slept piled up in the truck, carrying every bit of their clothing and without being able to stretch.

The next day they came to pick us up and took us to another church. There, a married couple offered us their home.

My children said good-bye to the African women and they cried a lot. The truth is, that their kindness stole our hearts. We will always be very grateful to them. We lived one month with this married couple. My husband found a job and we rented an apartment. My children started school at a school nearby.

And there, we met a beautiful angel that changed our lives immediately. She put us in contact with a charity and they gave us mattresses, sheets, dining ware, and living room items. In a few words, everything that is necessary for a home. We lacked nothing because of her.

We met a couple of teachers who also gave us some 94

beautiful things. They even gave me a job. Everything was good—school, work, a home, and most importantly, the peace of mind for our children and us.

Here, we have faced some problems with the apartment assistant and the manager who are very racist. I don’t know where they came from, but we had many mice and they wouldn’t stop coming. So, we went to the office to see what they could do and they ignored me. On top of that, they said that there were complaints against my children because they were very loud, which is completely false. She also said that my children were very restless and that if there was another complaint they were going to evict us.

She said that she shouldn’t have rented the apartment to us. We were very concerned again thinking about where we would go if we had to leave the apartment. Until now, they have not told us anything. We had to pay the cost of the mice because they ignored us. Our permits to stay here expired and we went to see a lawyer of immigration that is very expensive.

He said that for Mexico there is no political asylum, even though our case could be an exception. They said that if there is a case, it would be six or eight thousand dollars. We’re still afraid of not knowing what to do, whether we should ask for the political asylum or stay how we are by the grace of God. Really, it would be a coin toss, that if we lose the opportunity to apply for the asylum, then we run the risk of deportation; this is our main fear. We did not come to harm this country. We only want to work and protect ourselves from great danger that awaits us if we return. We are a united family and we truly believe that God will help us and not leave us alone in these hard times. We simply have to continue to work very hard and my three kids need to continue to study. We hope that with time we can overcome the horrors that we have lived through in our country.

No hemos venido a dañar a este país Antes de venir a éste país todo era diferente mi esposo tenía un trabajo en el gobierno fungia como policia Estatal del estado y posteriormente de escolta de un distinguido alcalde todo hiba muy bien nada nos faltaba a pesar que cada día aumentaba drásticamente el porcentaje de violencia un día invitaron a mi esposo a unirse al crimen organizado cosa que no aceptó el detesta la corrupción y no aceptó a partir de ahí vinieron amenazas en contra de él y de la familia ellos os tenían en la mira sabían nombres, dirección y de mas a si que sin dudarlo nos vimos. En la necesidad de irnos a otro estado y para ello dejamos a nuestros tres hijos al cuidado de su abuela paterna por cuarenta dias mientras encontrabamos un trabago y comprarles una camita y lo indispensable para Llevarlos a nuestro lado la única ventaja que teníamos era que es esa ciudad fronteriza teníamos una casa y ahí Llegamos a dormir en el suelo pasando muchos calores en ese entonces a si pasaron los días y encontramos trabajo en una central de abastos pelando tomatillo había que caminar muchisimo un dia no aguante y se me reventaron mis venas internas de mi pierna izquierda. Fue muchísimo ardor pero gracias a Dios pasó cuando compramos lo necesario regresamos por los niños y nuestra sorpresa fue que habían sido brutalmente maltratados por su abuela ellos no paraban de Llorar eso les generó muchos traumas la abuela se regresó a donde ella vivía Llevando un campeón de mudanzas con todas nuestras pertenencias producto de años de esfuerzo pero en ese momento solo nos importaba alejarnos del peligro en nuestro auto salimos del Estado de Veracruz para la frontera ya todos juntos nuevamente Llegamos y estuvimos instalados todos teníamos pasaporte y visas de turista así que aprovechamos para trabajar en Hidalgo texas tres ó cuatro veces por semana ahí vamos y regresamos el mismo dia ahi mis niños y nosotros fuimos testigos de mucha 96

violencia balaceras todos los días a cada rato la delincuencia se apodera y causaba terror a la gente quemando más de diez transportes públicos que mandó casas matando a quien se le atraviese sin la mínima piedad vimos muchísimos cuerpos mutilados jovencitos colados en los puentes peatonales lo más civel era ver como se ensañan con ninos inocentes familias completas eso era demasiado pas a nosotros pero era él único lugar donde teníamos casa y trabajo sólo salíamos al trabajo y a los niños los dejábamos con mi hermana que ella vivía muy cerca de nuestra casa aun así no rodeamos evitar que los niños presenciaron enfrentamientos esos estaban a la orden del día y siempre escuchando a la gente decir que por tal lado encontraron gente sin cabeza y temas demasiado violentos mus ninos decian vamonos a otro lado no queremos morir, no de esa forma tan cruel pudimos soportar los maltratos de la abuela nos pegaba con palos con clavos daba huevos con cáscara y nos obligaba lavar hasta su ropa a mano siendo muy pequeños para eso nos daba de puñetazos en la cabeza y cuando nos bañaba nos tallaba tan fuerte nuestras partes íntimas que hasta nos sangraba pero ese dolor no es tanto comparado con este horror mis ojos se llenaron de lágrimas al escucharlos y fue cuando decidimos actuar hice un primer intento de sacar un permiso familiar de turista y no reunimos los requisitos me sentí muy triste y muy impotente así que un dia al llegar a la casa estaba completamente inhabitable se habían robado todo hasta las puertas, protecciones, Aodo el cable de la luz y hasta las cosas del baño una amiga nos ofreció su casa que estaba sola y nos dio algunas cosas mi hermana también nos ayudó mucho luego nos enteramos que los que hicieron eso fueron personas que habían mandado desde veracruz para intimidarnos más bien para desaparecer a la familia pero cuando fueron no nos encontraron afortuna damente a si que nos encomendamos a Dios y fuimos nuevamente a sacar el permiso para salir del país por fin Dios nos escuchó y de inmediato nos dieron el permiso a si que solo quedaba juntar algo de dinero para el viaje no pasaron ni quince dias despues que nos otorgaron el permiso cuando en la madrugada vimos una camioneta 97

sospechosa dando varias vueltas por dando varias vueltas por donde vivíamos una vecina que se desvelaba tomando me dijo que eran gente de la mana asi le llaman a los delincuentes nuevamente el pánico se apoderó de nosotros y decidimos salir así con lo que teníamos de ropa y dinero no era suficiente pero solo queríamos escapar a donde fuera pero lo más lejos que pudiéramos llegar así fue como manejando llegamos a esta ciudad que por cierto nunca la habíamos escuchado mencionar solo dejamos que Dios nos guiará a nuestro destino. Al llegar eran casi las seis de la tarde y hacia mucho frio nadie tenía sueter todos teníamos ropa de verano fuimos a una iglesia a pedir ayuda pero por la hora y no había casi gente además aquí hablaban inglés afortunadamente mi esposo sabe un poco y se dio a entender fuimos a otra iglesia y ahí conocimos a unas africanas super lindas no esperábamos lo que hicieron por nosotros nos llevaron a comprar suficiente comida y nos hospedaron en un hotel muy bonito por cierto así que cenamos, nos bañamos y dormimos muy rico ya que en el camino solo durmieron los niños amontonados cargando cada uno su ropita y sin poder estirarse al otro dia fueron por nosotros y nos llevaron a otra iglesia a hi un matrimonio nos ofreció su casa mis niños al despedirse de ellas les lloraron mucho la verdad su bondad nos robo el corazón siempre estaremos muy agradecidos con ellas y vivimos un mes con ese matrimonio, mi esposo encontró un trabajo y rentamos un departamento mis niños entraron a una escuela muy cerca y ahí conocimos un bello ángel que nos cambió la vida de inmediato nos contactó con personal de beneficencia y nos dieron colchones a todos, sabanas comedor, sala en pocas palabras todo lo necesario que debe haber en un hogar nada nos faltaba por medio de ella conocimos un par de maestras que también nos donaron cosas muy bonitas y hasta trabajo me dieron todo estaba muy bien escuela, trabajo un hogar donde vivir y lomas importante la tranquilidad de mis hijos y la nuestra algunos problemas con una secretaría de los departamentos y la manager son racistas no se de donde salieron muchísimos ratones pero no paraban fuimos a las oficinas que hicieran algo y me ignoraron para 98

colmo me dijeron que habían quejas de mis niños que hacían ruido y que nos iban a desalojar con otro queja más cosa que es completamente falso me dijo que mis niños eran muy inquietos y que no debió rentarnos nuevamente volvió la preocupación hacia la familia pensando dónde podríamos ir en caso de que nos pidieran el departamento hasta ahorita no nos han dicho nada y bueno tuvimos que hacernos cargos de los ratones por que no hicieron caso. Y a se nos vencio el permiso y fuimos a ver un abogado de migración que cobra muy caro y nos dijo que para México no hay asilo Político aunque nuestro caro podría ser la excepción nos dijeron que si hay caso pero serian de seis o ocho mil dólares y tenemos hasta ahorita ese temor de no saber qué hacer si pedir el asilo político ó quedarnos así a la gracia de Dios realmente sería una moneda al aire que si perdiéramos la oportunidad para aplicar para el asilo corremos el riesgo de que nos deporten y ese es nuestro principal temor nosotros no venimos hacer daño a este país solo queremos trabajar y protegernos del peligro tan grande que nos espera si regresamos somos una familia muy unida y creemos mucho en que Dios nos ayudaron y no nos dejará solos en estos momentos tan dificiles solo nos queda trabajar muy duro y que mis tres niños sigan con sus estudios y con el tiempo puedan superar el horror que vinimos en nuestro país.

My Family Tried to Do Things the Right Way My husband and I have been a couple since 2012. We were friends for about four years before we became a couple.

My kids knew and adored him; he would always come play in the yard with them, baseball throwing, building igloos out of the snow, whatever the kids were doing when he came over.

He joined with them and my kids loved that. So we decided to become a couple! In 2012 my husband, boyfriend at the time, got into some misdemeanor trouble, but since he was an illegal alien from Mexico, they wanted to put him in the deportation process. We went to court in Chicago, and the judge told us that we could start applying to get him a visa and start process for legal citizenship papers. So of course we had to find an attorney who dealt with immigration processes. We found an attorney who worked out a payment plan with us.

So we start the process! We file the appropriate paperwork and pay the fees, along with making weekly payments to the attorney. The first papers filed get accepted and we get another court date for Chicago again. We were kind of excited, we started talking about getting married and the attorney said that marriage would help the process so much more. So then we go to our next court date in 2013 in Chicago. The judge said it’s great we are getting married, and gave us another set of papers and fees to file and pay, and told us we had until 2014 to do this and then come back to court in Chicago again.

So we come back home to Indy and start filing these papers and paying these fees. In the meantime, I’m planning a small, intimate, inexpensive wedding. I really wanted to get married on my parents anniversary but it fell on a weekday so we picked a weekend before the date. On January 18, 2014, me, my children, and now husband became a family‌we were all so excited!

A couple of months pass and we receive a letter saying 113

that the last papers we filed were accepted and we had an interview downtown here in Indianapolis with Immigration.

For this interview we had to take photos of our family and things to prove that our marriage was real and not just a hoax to get some alien his papers. So we go to our interview and they separate us and interview us separately and then together.

They look at all of our family pictures, our marriage license and certificate, they ask us all kinds of questions about each other and our life, then immigration tells us that they will send us a letter in the mail to let us know if they think our life and marriage is real or not. This stuff is so crazy! Why would people get married just so an illegal alien from another country can get papers to be legal in this country? Well, according to Immigration, it happens all the time. Wow! Crazy!

So we get a letter in the mail saying that we gave significant proof that our life together and marriage is real to the Immigration office. So now we have new papers to file and fees to pay before we go back to court in summer of 2014.

In the process of all this, my mother got sick and we found out that she had breast cancer. My husband and I worked together doing hand man jobs, collecting scrap metal, he would find and do roofing jobs and I did hair. My mom had to have surgery to have her right breast removed and after she would have to do radiation, chemo, either both or one or the other.

My husband told me he would handle the bills and expenses along with paying weekly payments to the attorney still.

Now it’s time to go back to court in Chicago. The judge is happy that we are filing all the papers. We needed so far and paid the fees, but it was starting to get financially hard on my husband. Thank God, the judge told us we didn’t have to come back to court until December 2019. But we still have to keep the process going, stay out of trouble, file papers that need filed, pay fees that need paid, and see you in 2019. At least we didn’t have to save money to go to court in Chicago for a few years.

We are back home and my husband gracefully lets me help my mom go to her radiation therapy and take care of her 114

for the next few months. He worked his butt off to pay the bills, made sure I had gas to get Mom back and forth to radiation, made sure my kids had what they needed. Not a lot of men will do that for a woman, her kids, and her mom! We could tell it was getting tough for my husband but he gracefully said it’s okay! He’s got us! After the whole six month process of helping my mom, her surgeon recommended that since I just turned forty that I should have a mammogram. Luckily I did and they found small sall-like grain strands of breast cancer in me. So I talked to my mom’s surgeon and she was positive that she could remove the cancerous spot and not have to remove my whole breast. Now my husband is freaking out, but he still financially gets us through my surgery and two months of recovery followed by thirty sessions of radiation for me. I was doing real good until the last two weeks of radiation. The radiation was kicking my butt, I got real weak and couldn’t hold a lot of foods down. As I got sick my husband started freaking out. He was worried about me, stressing about finances and still making weekly attorney payments, until we received a letter from Immigration saying that our attorney had been suspended from the Lawyers bar license, and we needed to obtain another attorney and file new attorney papers with Immigration and pay fees before we go back to court in 2019. It’s only 2016, so we have time to let my husband breathe some bit of financial relief not having to pay an attorney for right now. At least now I can finish my radiation and recover and hopefully my husband won’t stress so much. I finally finished radiation and I’m weak, so now I have to recover and have lots of doctor appointments for the next couple of months. My husband is still stressing, but he’s not talking to me about anything anymore. Instead it seems like all we do is argue anymore. It’s July and I finished my radiation, I’m not as weak, I’m getting my strength back.

My husband and I got into a verbal argument and he started throwing things. My fourteen-year-old son came downstairs to make sure I didn’t get hurt. So now my son and husband are arguing and I’m in the middle of them so they don’t get into a fist fight, and trying to push my husband outside of the 115

house and away from me and my son until they both calm down. The nosey neighbor across the street calls the police, my husband leaves before the cops get here, and I have to calm my son down and deal with the cops and clean up the mess my husband made. The cops are gone, son is calmed down. So is husband, and he came back home. The next couple weeks pass and some strange lady comes knocking at my door. CPS was called because my husband and fourteen-year-old son got into an argument. Next we get a letter in the mail saying we have court because the state of Indiana was pressing charges for the assault of a minor. All of us had to do separate interviews with CPS and then with the prosecutor. My son told CPS and the prosecutor that he would not go to court against the closest thing to a dad that he has ever had. So after we all interviewed with the prosecutor and CPS, they searched my house to make sure my kids have beds, clothes, food, and running water in our house. Again, this is crazy, me and my husband had to sign agreements with CPS that we wouldn’t argue and he wouldn’t get hostile around my teenage children. Finally we got an email letter from CPS saying that there was no proof that my children was not being properly taken care of so no CPS case would be opened. Finally my husband went to court and because my son and I wouldn’t testify against my husband, the prosecutor had no choice but to drop all charges against my husband. Yay! We got through another rough spot!

It’s April 2017 and time to file the yearly papers and fees for Immigration. They send us the paperwork since we haven’t filed papers with a new attorney yet. We fill them out, get a money order for the filing fee and send them back to Immigration. I’m still not back to work and me and my husband are arguing a lot more. Its summer and the kids are out of school, my husband tells me its rough but we always make it though. He told me not to worry about going back to work until the kids go back to school.

Summer is about over and the kids will be back in school in a week, so I start sending my resume out to hair salons.

I’m not going back to hard labor, I can’t do it anymore. My 116

husband says that’s fine! I keep sending out my resume and only get a few interviews. They want more experience since I’ve been off for the past two years without a job or references.

It’s October and every interview I’ve been on comes up with some excuse to not hire me. I’m stressing because Christmas is coming soon and I don’t wanna ask my husband to pay everything and buy my kids’ Christmas. He’s done this for the past two years and the stress is kicking his butt. I found a company that picked out my kids to help with Christmas, this will be less stress on my husband and maybe we won’t argue as much.

Now it’s Thanksgiving and we got our first snow so I know that means construction is over for my husband for a couple months and it’s time to find handyman jobs. I’m still sending out my resume but can’t afford booth rent in any of the salons. And hardly none of the hair salons pay hourly and commission. At least none of the good salons.

It’s Monday after Thanksgiving and we get a letter from Immigration court saying that my husband needs to appear in Chicago in two weeks to be deported due to charges filed by the state of Indiana…Now I’m freaking out, my husband is freaking out, we aren’t working right now, we have no money saved to go to Chicago and Immigration doesn’t even care that all charges filed by the state of Indiana were dropped.

We have spent all kinds of money filing papers and paying the fees, three years of payments to attorney, and numerous trips to court in Chicago. And because we had a family argument, Immigration wants to deport my husband. In two weeks! Right before Christmas. We have to try to borrow money to go to court. We have to tell the kids. So we sit the kids down to tell them what this letter from Immigration says. Now everybody is freaking out. Me, both kids and my husband don’t even know what to do. My husband and I make a few calls to see if we can borrow money to go to court, they will get back with us and let us know if we can borrow money within the week. My kids are freaking out, what are we gonna do without Dad, why are they deporting him, all kinds of questions and we don’t have 117

answers to any of them. The next week it seems like all we do is argue, everyone is stressing and it’s only getting worse. No side jobs, no handyman jobs right now, not enough snow to shovel and plow. What are we gonna do? The people we asked to borrow money call back and they don’t have it to spare right now. My husband is suppose to go to court in six days and we have no money to get to Chicago and no way there.

My husband decided to run. His parents sent him to this country to get him away from the gangs that tried to kill him and left him to die. He can’t be sent back to Mexico! So one morning my husband gets up and just for no reason starts an argument. He’s yelling things that don’t even make sense, now he’s throwing things. My son comes downstairs and tries to talk sense into my husband, and they start to argue. Again, I’m in the middle of my fifteen-year-old and my husband so they don’t get into a fist fight. Neither one of them will shut up, now my son is telling him that we are all sick of the arguing, that my husband must like being miserable, and that he needs to chill out. They are still arguing and neither one of them will chill out. I almost have my husband out the door until he chills out and then he lost it, he came after my son and we had to call the cops to get my husband to leave. The cops came and he left as he saw them come onto our street. IMPD didn’t do anything since my husband left. Now my husband has been staying wherever he can, even at a shelter sometimes because he doesn’t want to come home because he didn’t go to court in Chicago. Now I had to take a delivery job to pay everything, we still see my husband and talk to him, but he won’t tell us where he stays at for the past three and a half months, we are trying to work on fixing our family but can barely do that because now Immigration will come to our house looking for him eventually. I could move and maybe he might come back to us but probably not because my husband says since me and the kids are citizens here, that Immigration can find us anywhere. My children are both on depression medicine, we all miss my husband and want our family back but none of us know if that is even possible anymore?

My family tried to do things the right way and make my husband a legal citizen. We did everything Immigration told us to do and paid every fee for every paper we had to file with Immigration. And for what? So they could keep our money and break up my family, put my husband in hiding all so he doesn’t get sent back to Mexico to the gang that already tried to kill him. Now I’m working a $5.50 an hour job, busting my butt to pay everything, and waiting around so me and my kids hear from my husband so we know when we get see him.

Mi familia intentó hacer las cosas de la manera correcta Mi marido y yo estamos juntos desde 2012. Fuimos amigos por cuatro años antes de convertirnos en pareja. Mis hijos lo conocían y lo adoraban. Él siempre venía a jugar en el patio con ellos, a tirar la pelota de béisbol, a construir iglús en la nieve; cualquier cosa que mis hijos estuvieran haciendo, él venía y se unía a ellos y eso a mis hijos les encantaba. ¡Así que decidimos convertirnos en pareja! En 2012, mi esposo, mi novio en ese momento, se metió en algunos problemas de delitos menores, pero como era un inmigrante ilegal de México, querían iniciar el proceso de deportación. Fuimos a la corte en Chicago y el juez nos dijo que podíamos empezar a solicitar una visa y comenzar el proceso para obtener documentos de ciudadanía legal. Así que, por supuesto, tuvimos que encontrar un abogado que se ocupara del proceso de inmigración. Encontramos un abogado que ideó un plan de pago con nosotros.

Así que, ¡empezamos el proceso! Cumplimentamos la documentación apropiada y pagamos las tarifas, además de hacer pagos semanales al abogado. Los primeros documentos presentados se aceptaron y recibimos otra fecha para ir a la corte de Chicago otra vez. Estábamos más o menos emocionados.

Así que, vamos a nuestra entrevista y nos entrevistan por separado y luego juntos. Ellos miran todas las fotos de nuestra familia, licencia de matrimonio y certificado, nos hacen todo tipo de preguntas sobre nosotros y nuestra vida, luego Inmigración nos dice que van a enviar una carta por correo para decirnos si ellos piensan que nuestra vida y matrimonio es real o no. ¡Qué locura! ¿Por qué se casaría la gente para que un inmigrante ilegal de otro país pueda obtener documentos para ser legal en este país? Bueno, de acuerdo con Inmigración, sucede todo el tiempo. ¡Guau! ¡Que locura! Así que recibimos una carta en el correo que decía que ofrecimos suficientes pruebas de que nuestra vida juntos y nuestro matrimonio es real para la oficina de Inmigración, así que ahora tenemos que mandar otros papeles nuevos y pagar otras tarifas antes de regresar a la corte en el verano de 2014.

Mientras todo esto ocurría, mi madre se puso enferma y descubrimos que tenía cáncer de mamá. Mi esposo y yo trabajamos juntos haciendo trabajos de mantenimiento, recogiendo chatarra, trabajos de techado y yo me puse a peinar.

Mi madre tenía que tener una operación para que le extirparan el seno derecho y luego tendría que hacerle radiación, quimio, uno u otro o los dos tratamientos. Mi marido me dijo que él se encargaría de las facturas y los gastos junto con el pago semanal al abogado.

Ahora regresemos a la corte en Chicago. El juez está feliz de que estamos enviando todos los documentos que 121

necesitamos hasta ahora y que hemos pagado las tarifas.

Empezaba a ser económicamente difícil para mi marido.

Gracias a Dios, el juez nos dijo que no teníamos que volver a la corte hasta diciembre de 2019. Pero todavía tenemos que continuar el proceso, no meternos en problemas, enviar los documentos que se necesitan, pagar las tarifas que hay que pagar, y hasta el 2019. Al menos no teníamos que ahorrar dinero para ir a la corte en Chicago durante uno años.

Estamos de vuelta en casa, y mi esposo muy generosamente me permite ayudar a mi mamá a ir a su terapia de radiación y cuidarla durante los próximos meses. Es sólo 2016, así que tenemos tiempo para dejar que mi esposo respire un poco económicamente sin tener que pagarle a un abogado por el momento. Al menos ahora puedo terminar mi radiación y recuperarme y espero que mi esposo no se estrese tanto. Finalmente terminé la radiación y estaba muy débil. Así que ahora tengo que recuperarme y tener muchas citas con el médico durante los próximos meses. Mi esposo todavía está estresado, pero ya no me está hablando de nada. En cambio, parece que todo lo que hacemos es discutir. Es julio y terminé mi radiación. No estoy tan débil, estoy recuperando mi fuerza.

Luego, recibimos una carta en el correo diciendo que tenemos que ir a la corte porque el estado de Indiana estaba presentando cargos por asalto de un menor. Todos tuvimos que hacer entrevistas separadas con CPS y luego con el fiscal. Mi hijo le dijo a CPS y al fiscal que no iría a la corte en contra de la persona más cercana a un padre que él ha tenido. Así que, después de que todos nos entrevistamos con el fiscal y CPS, registraron mi casa para asegurarse de que mis hijos tenían camas, ropa, comida y agua corriente en nuestra casa. De nuevo, todo esto es una locura, mi esposo y yo tuvimos que firmar acuerdos con CPS para que no discutiéramos, y para que él no creara hostilidad cerca de mis hijos adolescentes. Finalmente, mi esposo fue a la corte y como mi hijo y yo no testificamos contra mi esposo, el fiscal no tuvo más opción que retirar todos los cargos contra mi esposo. ¡Hurra! ¡Pasamos por otro momento difícil!

Es abril de 2017 y es el momento de mandar los documentos anuales y las tarifas de Inmigración. Nos envían la documentación porque no hemos mandado los documentos con un nuevo abogado todavía. Los rellenamos, recibimos un giro postal por la tasa de depósito y los enviamos a Inmigración.

Todavía no he vuelto al trabajo y mi esposo y yo discutimos mucho más. Es verano y los niños no están en la escuela, mi esposo me dice que es difícil, pero siempre sobrevivimos. Me dijo que no me preocupara por volver a trabajar hasta que los niños volvieran a la escuela.

El verano ya casi ha terminado, y los niños van a regresar a la escuela en una semana así que empiezo a enviar mi currículum a las peluquerías. No voy a regresar al trabajo forzado, no puedo hacerlo más. ¡Mi esposo dice que está bien!

Sigo enviando mi currículum a varios lugares y solo recibo unas pocas entrevistas. Ellos quieren más experiencia que yo porque he estado desempleada durante los últimos dos años, no he tenido trabajo y no tengo referencias.

Es octubre y en cada entrevista que he tenido, encuentran alguna excusa para no contratarme. Todavía estoy enviando mi currículum, pero no puedo pagar el alquiler de espacio en ningún salón. Y casi ninguno de los salones de las 124

Es el lunes después del Día de Acción de Gracias y recibimos una carta de la corte de Inmigración que dice que mi esposo necesita comparecer en Chicago en dos semanas para ser deportado debido a los cargos presentados por el estado de Indiana… Ahora sí que tengo pánico, mi esposo está como loco, no estamos trabajando en este momento, no tenemos dinero ahorrado para ir a Chicago y a la Inmigración no le importa que se hayan retirado todos los cargos archivados por el estado de Indiana.

Hemos gastado toda clase de dinero en la solicitud de documentos y en el pago de las tarifas; tres años de pagos a un abogado, numerosos viajes a la corte en Chicago, y solo porque tuvimos una discusión familiar, la inmigración quiere deportar a mi esposo­ —¡en dos semanas! Justo antes de Navidad. Tenemos que tratar de pedir dinero prestado para ir a la corte. Tenemos que contarles a los niños. Así que, sentamos a los niños y les decimos lo que dice esta carta de Inmigración.

Ahora todos estamos como locos. Los dos niños, mi esposo y yo ni siquiera sabemos qué hacer. Mi esposo y yo hacemos unas cuantas llamadas para averiguar si podemos pedir prestado dinero para ir a la corte, ellos nos contestan y nos dirán si podemos pedir dinero prestado dentro de una semana.

Mis hijos están como locos: ¿qué vamos a hacer sin papá, por qué lo están deportando?, todo tipo de preguntas y no tenemos respuestas para ninguna de ellas. A la semana siguiente parece que todo lo que hacemos es discutir, todos estamos estresados y solo está empeorando. No hay trabajos secundarios, no hay trabajos de mantenimiento en este momento, no hay suficiente nieve para palear y barrer, ¿qué vamos a hacer? Las personas a las que pedimos dinero prestado nos llaman y nos dicen que ahora no lo tienen para gastar en este momento. Mi esposo se supone que debe ir a la corte en seis días y no tenemos dinero para llegar a Chicago ni estar allí.

Mi esposo decidió huir. Sus padres lo enviaron a este país para alejarlo de las bandas que trataron de matarlo y dejarlo 125

muerto allí. ¡Él no puede regresar a México! Entonces, una mañana mi esposo se levanta y, sin ninguna razón, empieza una discusión. Está gritando frases que ni siquiera tienen sentido, ahora él está tirando cosas. Mi hijo baja las escaleras y trata de que mi esposo entre en razón y ellos comienzan a discutir. Nuevamente, estoy en medio de mi hijo de fifteen años y mi esposo para que no se peleen. Ninguno de ellos se va a callar, ahora mi hijo le dice que todos estamos hartos de las discusiones, que a mi esposo le debe gustar ser miserable, y que él necesita relajarse. Todavía ellos están discutiendo y ninguno de ellos se tranquiliza. Casi hago que mi esposo salga por la puerta hasta que se relaje y luego él perdió el control; él fue a por mi hijo y tuvimos que llamar a la policía para que mi esposo se fuera. La policía vino y él se fue al ver a la policía entrar en nuestra calle. IMPD o la policía de Indianápolis no hizo nada desde que mi esposo se fue. Ahora mi esposo se ha estado quedando donde puede, incluso en refugios a veces porque no quiere volver a casa porque no fue a la corte en Chicago. I Would Appreciate You Being Respectful I came to the United States with a visitors permit at the age of thirteen from Guatemala. My mom had become a permanent resident and although she had paid a thousand dollars of her hard-earned money to file for papers for me through a lawyer nothing happened for a long time. I was in high school and my mom had to work several jobs to keep me at school and keep a roof over our heads. Some weekends I had to spend them alone in an apartment because my mom had to travel to someone’s house to clean. My mom was a housekeeper and worked harder than anyone I knew. Even though she was so good at her job that she was able to work with a famous NYC designer she didn’t make enough money to just have one job.

When I was in high school, my mom was my encourager.

She told me I needed to work twice as hard as my peers in order to catch up and graduate. I did. I graduated from high school with honors and got accepted to a state university in New York. None of that mattered unless my papers came through. It took so long I thought I wasn’t going to be able to go to college.

Thankfully, NY was more understanding at that time and let me attend since I had already filed for papers. My life would be so different if that hadn’t been the case. I ended up transferring to Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated with honors as an elementary school teacher. Shortly after, I moved to Indianapolis where I worked. Then, I met and married as well. We started a family of our own.

Indianapolis has been a great home for me and my family.

I have mostly felt welcome and at home. That is until a very upsetting incident last year.

My mom moved close to us to help with our kids and we go out together frequently. On this occasion we went to a children’s shop in Greenwood. I was showing my mom a jacket 128

for my six-year-old son and asking her opinion. I was speaking in Spanish because we mostly speak in Spanish to each other.

I moved a little closer down the rack and accidentally barely touched against a lady next to me. I didn’t even notice when she started cursing at me. She said, “I can’t stand all these f$&@ b$&@ who can’t even speak English.” I knew what to do but had to breathe to be calm first. I knew she didn’t know me or the fact that I spoke English without any accent (I worked hard to achieve that because even as a young child I could tell people reacted differently to those who spoke with an accent).

I calmly but firmly said, “Ma’am, for your information I am an elementary school teacher and speak Spanish AND English perfectly well. I would appreciate you being respectful, and if you had issues with me barely brushing up against you, please say that with some class.”

I walked away and knew sadly in my heart she wasn’t the only one who believed that people who are different are less and don’t deserve the same dignity they enjoy.

Sabía que ella no me conocía o que yo hablaba inglés sin ningún acento (puse mucho esfuerzo en lograr eso porque incluso cuando era una niña pequeña podía ver que la gente reaccionaba de manera diferente a los que hablaban con acento). Con calma, pero firmemente le dije: “Señora, para su información, soy una maestra de la escuela primaria y hablo español e inglés perfectamente. Apreciaría que tuviera más respeto y que si le molestó que la rozara, podría haberlo dicho con más clase.”

How We Arrived in the United States A note on this couple: This is the story of grandparents who are raising six of their grandchildren including one infant.

Four of the children attend a local school. The father of some of the children also lives with the grandparents. Their mother was deported back to Mexico. This family, despite all the challenges, is well adjusted and well provided for because the grandparents see to the well-being of their children—above everything else.

When the grandfather gave us their story, he said “We came here for a better life.� And that is what they are providing for his family.

Grandpa: I was born on February 7, 1947. It was 1968, and I was twentyone years old when I crossed the Rio Bravo, swimming to Brownsville, Texas. Then, I went to San Antonio, Texas and from there I traveled to Chicago by bus. I lived in Chicago for twenty-four years, and I became a resident there. Then, I moved to Indianapolis and I have lived here for thirty years.

Here I became a United States citizen.

Grandma: I was born on January 25, 1949. In 1976 I crossed the border at Tijuana. I spent two weeks in San Diego and then traveled to Chicago on an airplane with my son who was six years old. He was the oldest of my children. I left my four other children in Mexico with my mom and six months later I brought them to the United States. It was hard supporting them all. I was their mother and father. I sent them to school while I worked like crazy to give my children a good life. I lived in Chicago for twenty years. Then, I moved to Indianapolis, and I have lived here for thirty years thanks to God. Sometimes life is hard, but God gave me the strength to keep moving forward.

Interview 1 Age: 26, Male Birthplace: Nezahualcoyotl, Mexico Number of years living in the US: 6 (since the last time I came) How many brothers and sisters do you have, and where do you fit in age?

I have five brothers and one sister. I am the second to youngest.

How many people were living in your household when you were growing up?

We moved around a lot. I lived with my aunt for a while and then with an uncle. When I was five years old, my mom bought a house. There were about ten people living there on and off, my brothers, their kids and wives, etc.

Describe the town you grew up in, small? Big? Country or urban?

Until I was nine years old I lived in Nezahualcoyotl. This is a city on the outskirts of D.F. (Distrito Federal, Ciudad de MĂŠxico). This is an overcrowded, dangerous place. There were many gangs and violence, and there were shootings every day.

When I was nine, my parents decided to move to San Diego, Texcoco. This is a small town. It is peaceful and everyone knows each other. There are farms and I was more in touch with nature there.

What did your parents do for work?

My mom didn’t work, she had enough work to take care of at home. My step-dad did construction work. Sometimes he would work for a construction company and other times he would do independent contracting.

How old were you when you first came to the US? I was fourteen years old. I came with my mom and my twoyear-old brother. My step-dad was already here.

Did you come and stay? Or did you go back to Mexico before moving here?

In 1998, when I was fourteen, I came with my mom and my two-year-old brother. We stayed here one year. We went back to Mexico. Then, March 25, 2002, when I was seventeen, I decided to come back with my niece. I stayed one year and then I went back to Mexico. In April of 2005, when I was twenty, I came back. I have been here since then.

Why did you decide to leave Mexico?

The first time we came because my step-dad and two of my brothers were here. The second time I came because two of my brothers were here I wanted to go on an adventure. The third time I came, I knew I could find work here.

Did anyone influence your decision to leave? Did your family want you to stay?

My brother is a coyote, so he knew how to get me across easily.

I think my mom was sad to see me go, but she knew things would be better for me here.

What concerns did you have before making the trip?

I worried about what everyone who crosses the border worries about, immigration was going to catch me. Also, it’s a fear that you will be kidnapped.

Did you know anyone who suffered greatly trying to cross the border?

When my two brothers were crossing, they were kidnapped by coyotes. They called me and said that if I didn’t send ten 140

thousand dollars right away they were going to be killed. I had to send the ransom money to the border so that they could be freed. Also, a distant cousin died in the desert.

Tell me about your trip to the US. Did you travel with other people? How did you travel? What kind (if any) resistance did you meet along the way?

The first time I can with my mom and my four-year-old little brother. We took a bus to the border. We talked to a coyote at the border who told us we were going to have to walk fifteen hours, so we decided to go with him. We left the hotel and we started to walk towards the hills. My mom decided to pass by a store to buy water because we were going to walking a long distance. When we started to walk, there was a big group of thirty people walking in front of us. A Mexican police officer, seeing all of those people, stopped in front of the group and didn’t let us pass. Seeing that, we decided to go back to the hotel. A lady was outside her house hanging up her clothes on a clothesline and she asked us if we were the people who were going to cross the border. She told us that the police always did that because there were so many people who wanted to cross that way. She said that her nephew knew how to get people across and he was cheap because he was just starting.

She asked us what hotel we were in so that her nephew could come and see us. He came to the hotel that night around 7:00 and he told us to come to another hotel to talk to his boss.

We took a taxi to look for his boss, but we couldn’t find the place. So, we went back to our hotel. The guy came back and asked us why we hadn’t gone to see his boss. We told him that we couldn’t find it, so he told us to start following him.

We arrived at the hotel and my mom talked to the coyote (the boss). The coyote sent two brincadores (jumpers), they were a young couple, about sixteen years old to go with us. He told us that a taxi would come to pick us up on the other side and take us to a hotel called Hotel Trebol and that is where we would pay him. So, that same night we walked fifteen minutes 141

towards the border. When we arrived at some corrals, we could see the border line. The young couple acted like everything was fine (they never told us to get down or anything like that).

In the corral there was a hole and the couple never told us to be careful, so my little brother fell in the hole. We got him out of there and kept walking. Just in front of us was the fence to cross into the U.S. There was a big puddle and the young couple crossed it like it was no big deal, and when my mom crossed she slipped, so I don’t know where I got the strength, but I grabbed her so she wouldn’t fall in. When we crossed the border, we lost the couple. They went back to Mexico and told us “Good Luck.” When we passed the fence, I could see the lights of immigration on my mom’s back. We sat on a rail next to the road. We were waiting for the taxi and we could see an immigration official had located us and was coming towards us. My mom said a prayer to St. Jude. Her prayer said, “San Juditas ta pale los ojos.” All of the sudden he turned around and went the other way. Then a taxi came and we got in, there was a lady in there who had just come from the market. The driver asked if we had just crossed. He told us we were in Douglas. We asked him if he knew the coyote or about Hotel Trebol and he had never heard of them. He told us that he knew of someone who took people to Phoenix. So he took us to a house where all the windows were covered. There my mom and my brother and I laid in a bed. Just when I fell asleep around midnight, a man came in to tell us we were going to leave for Phoenix. He took us in a bus to another house where we got into a Nissan truck with a cover on the back. We laid in the back of the truck. I woke up because I was so cold.

We stopped to drink some coffee. When we got back in the car, I could see headlights following us. The road we were on was a dirt road. The driver thought it was immigration so he was going so fast he almost lost control and we almost flipped.

My mom and my brother were in the front and they could see everything. My mom could see the immigration officer passing us. When the morning came I could see cars out the back, Americans, they were looking at us. We finally arrived 142

at this house, there were like ten people there. They fed us and within a couple of hours my brother arrived. My brother sold his car to the coyote who had brought us there and with that money we bought airplane tickets to fly to Indianapolis. That night we stayed at a hotel and my little brother accidentally called 911. The police arrived and asked us what happened, but we couldn’t speak English, we tried to tell him that it was my little brother. But, he searched the hotel room. When they left, my mom was so nervous. The next morning we got on a plane and came to Indianapolis. We got in a taxi and went to the apartment where my dad was. And that’s just the story of the first time I came here.

If you did travel with friends or family, are you still in close contact with them today?

Yes, my friend that I crossed with the third time lives close to me.

Did you ever feel that you were in danger?

No, I just felt like it was a trip.

Did you have a specific destination in the US? Indianapolis, it is where my family lived.

Did you have family and friends living here already?

Yes, my step-dad and my brothers were living here.

What were your first reactions once getting here? Were you surprised by anything? Disappointed?

It was a completely different world. I couldn’t stop looking at everything. I wanted to go to places I had seen on T.V., like the houses, the stores, the restaurants, and the parks. I wanted to 143

eat pizza, hamburgers, and hotdogs. It was fun to look at the people, they all looked so different. I couldn’t communicate with anybody though, that was weird. There was so much green. I wanted to see snow so bad. But, that year it never snowed. I loved it all, there was nothing I didn’t like about this country.

How has your view of those things changed after living here?

Now, I see that so much of the food that I wanted to eat is so unhealthy. I am still fascinated by the houses here and stores here. I love to fish, I love the nature here.

What was one of your greatest challenges adjusting to a new culture? How did you overcome them?

The language has been a big challenge. I want to do a lot of things, but not knowing the language proficiently gets in my way. I really want to go back to school, but I am nervous because I don’t know the language well. I have taken English classes and some GED courses in Spanish.

What do you still find challenging today?

The way of thinking is different here. In Mexico, people help each other out a lot more. If a friend invites you to eat, they pay. If you invite someone to go to the store with you, you buy them something. Here, people are more individualistic.

What are some of the things you miss about Mexico?

I miss my family and my friends. I also miss having more freedom. Living as an undocumented immigrant is hard because you are always feeling like you need to look over your shoulder. But, I don’t miss life there.

Do you have any regrets about your decision to come here?

No because my daily life is easier. I make more money here and now I have created a family here with my wife and my daughters. I want my daughters to know Mexico, but I don’t think I would every raise them there because they will have more opportunities here.

Nos mudamos mucho. Yo viví con mi tía por un tiempo y luego con mi tío. Cuando tenía cinco años, mi madre compró una casa. Había alrededor de diez personas viviendo allí intermitentemente, mis hermanos, sus hijos y esposas, etc.

Describe el pueblo en el que creció, ¿era pequeño? ¿grande? ¿rural o urbano?

Hasta que tenía nueve años, viví en Nezahualcóyotl. Esta es una ciudad en las afueras del D.F. (Distrito Federal, Ciudad de México). Es un lugar superpoblado y peligroso. La primera vez, vine con mi mamá y mi hermanito de cuatro años. Tomamos un autobús a la frontera. Hablamos con un coyote en la frontera que nos dijo que íbamos a tener que caminar por quince horas, así que decidimos ir con él. Nos fuimos del hotel y empezamos a caminar hacia las colinas.

Mi madre decidió pasar por una tienda para comprar agua porque íbamos a caminar durante una larga distancia. Cuando empezamos a caminar, había un gran grupo de trienta personas caminando enfrente de nosotros. Un oficial de la policía mexicana, al ver a todas las personas, se detuvo en frente del grupo y no nos dejó pasar. Al ver eso, decidimos regresar al hotel. Una señora estaba fuera de su casa tendiendo su ropa en un tendero y nos preguntó si éramos las personas que iban a cruzar la frontera. Nos dijo que la policía siempre hacía eso porque había mucha gente que quería cruzar de esa manera.

Ella dijo que su sobrino sabía cómo conseguir que la gente cruzara y que él era barato porque acababa de empezar. Ella nos preguntó en qué hotel nos estábamos quedando para que su sobrino pudiera venir a vernos. Él vino al hotel esa noche alrededor de las 7:00 y nos dijo que viniéramos a otro hotel para hablar con su jefe. Tomamos un taxi para buscar a su jefe, pero no pudimos encontrar el lugar. Así que volvimos a nuestro hotel. El tipo regresó y nos preguntó por qué no habíamos ido a ver a su jefe. Le dijimos que no pudimos encontrarlo, así que 148

nos dijo que lo siguiéramos. Llegamos al hotel y mi mamá habló con el coyote (el jefe). El coyote envió a dos brincadores (saltadores), una joven pareja de unos dieciséis años, para ir con nosotros. Nos dijo que un taxi vendría a recogernos en el otro lado y nos llevaría a un hotel llamado Hotel Trebol y allí es donde le pagaríamos. Así que, esa misma noche caminamos quince minutos hacia la frontera. Cuando llegamos a algunos corrales, pudimos ver la línea fronteriza. La joven pareja actuó como si todo estuviera bien (nunca nos dijeron que bajáramos ni nada de eso). En el corral había un hoyo y la pareja nunca nos dijo que tuviéramos cuidado, así que mi hermanito cayó en el hoyo. Lo sacamos de ahí y seguimos caminando. Justo en frente de nosotros estaba la alambrada para cruzar Estados Unidos, había un gran charco y la joven pareja cruzó como si no fuera un gran problema, pero cuando mi madre cruzó ella se resbaló. No sé de dónde obtuve la fuerza, pero la agarré para que no se cayera. Cuando cruzamos la frontera, perdimos a la pareja. Regresaron a México y nos dijeron “buena suerte.” Cuando cruzamos la alambrada, pude ver las luces de inmigración a la espalda de mi madre. Nos sentamos en una barandilla al lado de la carretera. Estábamos esperando el taxi y pudimos ver un funcionario de inmigración que nos había localizado y venía hacia nosotros. Mi madre dijo una oración a San Juditas. Su oración dijo, “San Juditas tápale los ojos.”

De repente se dio la vuelta y se fue por el otro lado. Luego un taxi llegó, y entramos. Había una señora que acababa de llegar del mercado. Luego, el conductor nos preguntó si acabábamos de cruzar la frontera. Nos dijo que estábamos en Douglas. Le preguntamos si conocía al coyote o sobre el Hotel Trebol y él nunca había oído de ellos. Nos dijo que sabía de alguien que llevaba a gente a Phoenix. Entonces, nos llevó a una casa donde todas las ventanas estaban cubiertas. Allí mi mamá y mi hermano y yo nos acostamos en una cama. Mi madre y mi hermano estaban en el frente y pudieron verlo todo. Mi mamá pudo ver al oficial de inmigración que nos pasó. Cuando la mañana llegó, pude ver coches por detrás y estadounidenses que nos miraban.

Finalmente llegamos a esta casa, había como diez personas allí. Nos alimentaron y en unas pocas horas, mi hermano llegó. Mi hermano vendió su coche al coyote que nos trajo allí y con ese dinero compramos boletos de avión para volar a Indianápolis. Esa noche nos quedamos en un hotel y mi hermanito accidentalmente llamó al 911. La policía llegó y nos preguntó qué pasó, pero no podíamos hablar inglés. Tratamos de decirle que era mi hermanito, pero el policía buscó en la habitación del hotel. Cuando se fueron, mi mamá estaba muy nerviosa. A la mañana siguiente, nos subimos en un avión y llegamos a Indianápolis. Nos metimos en un taxi y fuimos al apartamento donde mi padre estaba. Y esa es sólo la historia de la primera vez que vine aquí.

Si viajó con amigos o familiares, ¿todavía está en contacto con ellos hoy?

Sí, mi amigo con el que crucé la tercera vez, él vive cerca de mí. ¿Alguna vez sintió que estaba en peligro?

Me encanta pescar y me encanta la naturaleza aquí. ¿Cuál fue uno de sus mayores desafíos adaptándose a una nueva cultura? ¿Cómo lo superó?

El idioma ha sido un gran desafío. Quiero hacer muchas cosas, pero no saber el idioma con fluidez me lo impide. Realmente quiero volver a la escuela, pero estoy nervioso porque no sé el idioma bien. He tomado clases de inglés y algunos cursos de GED en español. ¿Qué encuentras desafiante todavía?

La manera de pensar es diferente aquí. En México, las personas se ayudan entre sí mucho más. Si un amigo te invita a comer, ellos pagan. Si invitas a alguien a ir a la tienda contigo, les compras algo. Aquí, las personas son más individualistas.

I was seven years old when I came to the United States.

Why did you decide to come here?

Since I was very little, I did not make the decision to come to the United States. My parents made the decision and the reason they made the decision was to have a better future and to be together in one place.

How did you travel here/how did you cross the border?

I had the privilege that unfortunately many do not have, my parents had been working very hard to be able to arrange it. So, when I crossed the border, I did it as a passenger in a car. I still remember they stopped and asked us for our documents when we crossed the border. After they had all the documents, they went around asking every person their full name, date of birth, where they were going, and at last, they asked me who the adults were in the vehicle and if I knew them and to where we were going. The immigration agents will try to see if they can make people nervous. At the age of seven, I did not completely understand what was going on.

Who did you come to the United States with (family, friends)?

When I came to the United States, I came with my parents and my three siblings.

What has been the hardest part of being in the United States?

The hardest part of being here in the United States was learning and mastering another language in order to be able to understand and communicate. Also, the discrimination that exists in this country has been a little difficult because although one is a resident of the United States, he does not have the same opportunities that other people have, such as health insurance, and state aid for bills or in hard times. Finally, what’s also tough is being away from my family that stayed in Mexico.

Many years can pass without seeing them for financial reasons.

What things have happened while you have been in the United States?

There have been good things and bad things about being in the United States. For example, being able to study and get a degree from college in order to have a better future. The worst thing of all is that part of my family has died or become ill and I could not be there to say goodbye or to support them during that time.

What has been the most beneficial or best thing about being in the United States?

The most beneficial thing has been having the opportunity to be with my family and receiving a more advanced education than I would have received in my country.

What do you miss most about your native country?

What I miss most about my native country is being able to go out without depending on a car. Also, being with my whole family and going for a walk or enjoying time with friends.

Como viajaste a aqui/como cruzasteis la frontera?

Yo tuve la dicha que muchos desafortunadamente no tienen, mis padres me habfan estado trabajando duro para podernos arreglar. Asf que cuando yo cruce la frontera lo hice en auto como pasajera. Aun recuerdo cuando cruzamos la frontera nos pararon para pedirnos los documentos. Después de que tengan todos los documentos pasaron preguntando a cada persona su nombre completo, fecha de nacimiento, para donde iban, y por fin a mi me preguntaban quién eran los adultos que estaban en el vehículo y que si los cónocia y también que para que parte iva. Los agentes de inmigración se fiaban a ver si podían poner a la gente nerviosa. A la edad de siete aflos no comprenda que estaba pasando por completo.

Cuando nos venimos para Estados Unidos venía con mis padres, y mis tres hermanos.

Qué ha sido la parte más difícil de estar en Estados Unidos?

Lo más difícil de estar aquí en los Estados Unidos fue aprender y dominar otro idioma para poder entender lo que está pasando y para comunicarse. Tambien la discriminacion que hay en este pafs ha sido un poco difícil pues aunque uno es residente de los Estados Unidos aún no tiene las mismas oportunidades que otras personas tienen tal como el seguro médico, y ayudas del estado cuando se trata de ayudas para los biles o en tiempos duro. Por fin lo que también es duro es de estar lejos de mi familia que se quedó en México pues pueden pasar años sin que los mire por razones financieras.

Qué cosas han pasado cuando has estado en Estados Unidos?

Ha habido cosas buenas y cosas malas de estar en los Estados Unidos. Por ejemplo el poder haber estudiado y completar in carrera en la universidad para obtener un mejor futuro. Lo malo que ha pasado es de que han fallecido o enfermado parte de mi familia y no he podido estar para despedirme o para apoyarlos durante ese tiempo.

Que ha sido lo más beneficial o mejor de estar en Estados Unidos?

Lo más beneficial ha sido de tener la oportunidad de estar con mi familia y obtener una educación más avanzada que la que hubiera obtenido en mi pafs.

Qué es lo que más extrañas de tu país natal?

Lo que más extraño en mi país natal es de poder salir sin depender de un auto. Y de estar con toda mi familia. De salir a caminar o a disfrutar el tiempo con amigos.

The Wall El Muro

Introduction Introducció Following the 2016 presidential election, many students voiced unease about the negative political rhetoric impacting the immigrant community. In response, a local school decided to give a voice to the opinions and feelings of students and students’ families by representing their statements on paper bricks. Two questions were asked: “What are your thoughts on recent immigration policies?” and “How do you feel about the increased police presence in your neighborhood?”

The bricks were arranged to form a wall, and each comment created a hole in the wall. This powerful piece was displayed at the school’s annual art show in the spring of 2017.

Después de las elecciones presidenciales de 2016, muchos estudiantes expresaron inquietud sobre el discurso político tan negativo que afecta a la comunidad inmigrante. A lot of people in the news and in the current administration, have a very “us versus them” mentality, and it’s hard to have a productive conversation with someone who thinks in that way.The “I’m right and you’re wrong” attitude never works; if people are unwilling to listen to people who disagree with them then nothing ever gets done and no one wins. Change will only come about when we listen to and respect one another.

It is not fair because they’re splitting families apart.

Quiero que los inmigrantes se sientan apoyados y bienvenidos aquí, pero el clima político actual infunde temor y divide a la gente en este tema.
