Glossary: CVC – acronym for consonant vowel consonant words such as d ‘d-­‐o-­‐g’. Phoneme – sound in a word, e.g. ‘cat’ has three phonemes ‘c-­‐a-­‐t’. Grapheme – spelling of a sound in a word e.g. ‘h’ in ‘hat’ is a one-­‐letter spelling; ‘sh’ in ‘ship’ is a two-­‐letter spelling; ‘igh’ in ‘night’ is a three-­‐ letter spelling and ‘ough’ in ‘through’ is a four-­‐letter spelling.


How to use Dandelion Books

Units 1-­‐10: Phase 2 of ‘Letters and Sounds’ Every level is called a ‘Unit’. The reader progresses from Unit 1 through the units. Dandelion Launchers Series and Dandelion Readers Series follow the same phonic progression. Dandelion Launchers have one or two lines How to use Dandelion Books of text. Dandelion Readers has three or four lines of text from Unit 3 onwards. Beginner readers should start with Dandelion Launchers and progress to Dandelion Readers. Catch-­‐up readers may be able to start with Dandelion Readers. The teacher will need to decide the level of text suitable for the pupil. Below are rough guidelines of where to start the pupil in the series. Workbooks offer further opportunities to practise phonic skills and knowledge at each stage.
