Burgundy Vintage Report 2011 The weather for the 2011 vintage began spectacularly with a particularly warm and early spring, before giving way to a cool and rainy summer with periodic heavy storms. As is often the case, a sunny end to August “a fait le moût” or “made the juice”, as they say. For the third time in a decade, the harvests began in the last 10 days of August, with some very tricky logistics. Each plot had to be harvested as it reached perfect maturity, and the sunshine in early September and low rainfall meant patience was required. The grapes had to be painstakingly sorted but the high discard resulted in fruity, silky reds and whites that were bursting with energy.

2012 Although the cold and damp during flowering led to shatter and millerandage, with an inevitable impact on volumes, the sunny and warm late summer allowed the grapes to attain good levels of ripeness and the harvest was relatively disease-free. The wines of the 2012 vintage are revealing more of their personalities. Their wide range reflects the aromatic diversity that characterizes the wines of Bourgogne. They also reflect the climatic conditions to which the vines were subjected, and the efforts of the winemakers and négociants to bring out the best in the fruit. These wines all have two characteristics in common: small quantities, but good quality.

2013 The 2013 vintage was marked by a tricky spring, and characterized by production volumes around 20% lower than the average. The main reason for this was the rain and cold weather experienced during flowering. Despite a hot summer ideal for good maturity, the harvests didn’t start until the end of September and the last grapes picked mid-October. Harvesting in 2013 began later in the year than it has for a quarter of a century, but when one looks at start dates going back over history, it is not that unusual.

2014 After the dormant winter period, the vines returned to life in clement, warm and dry conditions. The start of the growing cycle gave an early indication of the potential harvest, despite some incidence of shatter, when the flowers fail to form fruit. At the end of June, the weather changed, becoming cool and damp, but ripening continued nonetheless. The return of the sun and a northerly wind – the signature of September in the Bourgogne wine region – led to ideal conditions for the vines to reach full maturity. Picking began in mid-September in a serene and sunny atmosphere, and vinification unfolded without problem. The wines, which are mostly now in the bottle, confirm that 2014 in the Bourgogne wine region is an excellent vintage.

Domaine Armand Rousseau – Gevrey Chambertin

Domaine Armand Rousseau was established back in the early 20th century by Armand Rousseau. Each of the domaine’s prestigious holdings is in Gevrey Chambertin, with the exception of Grand Cru Clos de la Roche in Morey St. Denis. Taken over by Charles Rousseau, son of Armand, since 1959, he and his son Eric has gradually assume more winemaking duties producing wines that are finely structured with essence of Pinot Noir and express great elegance and stamina. We are pound to be appointed as the exclusive distributor from 2010 vintage.

Domaine Dugat-Py – Gevrey Chambertin

This small (10 hectare) domaine quietly goes from strength to strength. Bernard Dugat-Py bought his first vineyard at the age of fifteen and his experience shows in the management of both vines and cellar. Since 2004 the domaine has been cultivated on biodynamic lines. The wines are typically stylish, balanced and complex with abundant fruit. The best have great ageing potential. “One essentially cannot go wrong buying any of them and as readers know, it's exceptionally rare that I give blanket endorsements.” Allen Meadows (Burghound)

Constant work in plots of vines (parcelles) which are mostly Très Vieilles Vignes (very old vines of more than 65 years old), and the use of organic preparations which have defined the Dugat-Py style.

Domaine Pierre Damoy – Gevrey Chambertin

Pierre Damoy has made real progress with these wines since he took over the family domaine for the vintage 1992. He enjoys the advantage of working with eleven hectares in some of the ďŹ nest vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, with vines from twenty to eighty years old. Grapes are harvested later than most of his neighbours and at lower yields. In the best years his wines show a good deal of weight and intensity which will repay time in the cellar.

Domaine Dujac – Morey St. Denis

Domaine Dujac is a young pup compared to some of the other well-known Burgundy names, established in 1967 by 26-year old Jacques Seysses with the acquisition of 4.5-hectares of vineyard owned by Domaine Marcel Graillet. Their wines are noted for their exceptional fragrance, structure and longevity. They are often elegant with a deep complexity that is ahead of alcohol and tannic structure. Today, with seven Grand Cru vineyards located in Morey-St-Denis, Dujac is one of Burgundy’s leading domaines. We are proud to be appointed as the exclusive distributor from 2010 vintage.

Domaine Ponsot – Morey St. Denis

The three types of viticulture explored above, namely sustainable practices, organic agriculture and biodynamic farming, are all based on a negative observation: humans have gone too far in their quest for profitability and have not been sufficiently concerned about the future of the vine. And this is no doubt true. At Domaine Ponsot, this concern or rather this process of respecting Nature is very ancient. It is the embodiment of the so-called "peasant" tradition based on common sense. And every generation since the foundation of the Domaine in 1872 has subscribed to this Love of Nature and, by the same token, its respect. And everything that is advocated today in the three ways of working described above has been applied at Domaine Ponsot since its earliest days, without needing to invent a name for it.

Domaine des Lambrays – Morey St. Denis

This 14th century estate owns the largest Monopole parcel in Cotes d’Or. On April 27th, 1981 the Clos des Lambrays was promoted by decree to GRAND CRU. In the end of 1996 Gunter and Ruth Freund, a couple of contractors from Coblence in Germany, knowing and appreciating Burgundy since a long time, became the new owners. At that time Gunter Freund was already Chevalier du Tastevin over 20 years. In 2002 his wife Ruth became also Chevalier du Tastevin and he was inducted Commandeur.

Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron – Premeaux-Prissey

In 1989, Alain Meunier and Sophie Confuron took over the domaine from Jean-Jacques Confuron and started making solid efforts at this formerly mediocre estate. They have since reduced crop yields and picked healthier and riper grapes. The domaine has eight hectares, with twelve appellations of the Côte de Nuits. Amongst these are the prestigious Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, and Clos de Vougeot and Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grands Crus.

Domaine d’Eugenie – Vosne Romanee

This domaine, with 7.5 hectares of well sited vines, was previously known as Domaine Rene Engel. On the untimely death of Philippe Engel the property was acquired by Francois Pinault, owner of Bordeaux first growth Chateau Latour. A new cuverie is currently under construction which should be ready for the 2009 vintage. The domaine was renamed in honour of Pinault’s grandmother. The Domaine is managed by Frederic Engerer, who also manages Chateau Latour, and supervised locally by oenologist Michel Mallard. An environment friendly approach is taken in all aspects of work in the vineyard. Growing techniques and ploughing the soil are given priority. No form of chemical weed control is used; the protection of the environment and the balance of the vines are always the priorities.

Domaine Bonneau du Martray – Pernand-Vergelesses

Bonneau du Martray is one of the benchmarks of great Burgundy Chardonnay. Owned by the Le Bault de la Moriniere family, the domaine is exclusively producing superior white wines from Grand Cru vineyards and is the largest single owner of vines within Corton-Charlemagne appellation. Wine critic Hugh Johnson gave it a 4-star rating, indicating its white is “exceptionally fine quality, consistent over many vintages.” We are proud to be appointed as the exclusive distributor from 2010 vintage.

Domaine Henri Boillot – Volnay

In the winery, reds are destalked then cooled down at 8°C for 12 days as part of a four week vatting time. Once the temperature is allowed to rise so that fermentation begins, the must may well be punched down but they avoid pumping over. After fermentation the wine goes to barrel, either new or one year old barrel. No racking, fining or filtering. The wines are bottled after 18 months in barrel and are generally described as pure, rich, accurate, powerful and brilliant.

Leflaive & Associes – Puligny Montrachet

In the world of Burgundy, no quality is as prized as much as good terroir, a mystical term that refers roughly to the combination of the soil in which the grapes are grown, the vineyard’s microclimate, altitude, angle of inclination and exposure to the sun, as well as the people who tend the grapes and transform them into wine. Domaine Leflaive’s holdings represent some of the most precious terroirs in the world for the chardonnay grape, including legendary grand cru vineyards like Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet and Le Montrachet itself, which potentially makes the greatest and most expensive white Burgundy of all. The negociant arm of Domaine Leflaive was established in order to provide a more affordable range of wines for the consumers that allows them to appreciate the terroir driven quality of the Leflaive’s philosophy. Winemaking is biodynamic.

Domaine des Comtes Lafon – Meursault

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is not only a leading producer in Meursault village but also one of the few in the Cote d'Or that produces equally good Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Under the care of Dominique Lafon, the domaine is cultivated according to biodynamic principles with no use of herbicides or chemical spray.
