Is a building still a building when it has legs on it? Critical thinking in architecture is not only reflected in knowledge itself, but also in how to develop critical thinking regarding social contexts through architecture, so as to better change some social situations, or make better use of current situations.
01 NEW GAOKAO TOWN Many parents sit with they children as they finishe their meal in front of the school gate.
The town sprang up for the college entrance examination An ad in the Maotanchang county offering home rental, meal and washing services for students.
Project 985 and 211 are both dream universities for Chinese students. All the students stayed up late studying for these schools
Every year, a large number of repeat candidates come to Maotanchang. It is in these places, called gaokao factories, that countless children of ordinary peo ple avo id the fate of entering real factories.
Thousands of people see off buses carrying students who are travelling to attend Gaokao on June 5, 2019. (The day before Gaokao). After a year of hard work, parents are finally seeing the light of day. Parents are jumping and cheering, hoping for the best result.
Architecture Design Academic Studio Individual Program Instructor: Wanli Mo Time: Summer 2019 Maotanchang Middle School is a middle school in Lu'an, Anhui, China. It is known as the largest 'Factory of Gaokao ' and is famous for its industrial model of education. Students began arriving from across China, praying the school could help create miracles. The town has about 30,000 permanent residents. In the past few years, the population has grown by another 20,000, with more than 10,000 families arriving to rent tiny studios, some hastily built in the courtyards of local homes, to take care of their studious teenagers.

SHARING CMMUNITY
"I’ve taken many mock tests, but I still feel nervous: it’s a war without bullets."a student said.Any mistake could cause a painful fall.
Based on the analysis of the local population survey and research, this project chose the land three minutes away from Maotanchang Middle School, and through the study of the local Gaokao industry chain, designed this sharing community based on the economic guidance of Gaokao, as a new community meeting the needs of examinees, accompanying parents and local residents.
THE TIMELINE OF GAOKAO
GAOKAO TOWN POPULATION ANALYSIS
Since the resumption of gaokao in 1977, gaokao has selected and sent a large number of elite talents for the country and made great contributions to the development of society. But at the same time, the annual gaokao has become a single-plank bridge, has become a class across the only way.
Based on the in-depth understanding of the daily activities of the three major groups in Maotanchang, the examinee spends most of his/her time studying, and only occasionally has time for entertainment activities in the evenings and weekends. The daily activities of the accompanying parents are mostly cooking, working at home or dancing in the square. Compared with the local residents, the life is relatively monotonous. As there are not enough jobs in the local area, the accompanying parents usually get together to chat except buying food and cooking, while there is not enough public space in the whole town

THE FORMATION OF THE GAOKAO TOWN The influx of 50,000 people every year (including 20,000 middle school students and 10,000 parents) has raised the town's fiscal revenue to nearly $2.45 million, four times the neighboring town of Dongehkou. Many residents of the town rent their homes out to parents for $1,300 to $3,300 a year, which is exorbitant for a small mountain town in China. TYPE

SHARING COMMUNITY At twelve o 'clock, the students left school on time and hurried back to their community. Some students' parents are not at home, so they go to the shared restaurant on the second floor to have a meal. After the meal, they can go to share self-study, review, discuss problems with friends or even just have a chat. Some of the students' parents had just returned from the shop downstairs to cook for their children. Some villagers had just finished drinking tea and were ready to go home for dinner.
02 ENTERTAINMENT TO THE DEATH Digital Labour: Prosumers and Playbours
Architecture Design Academic Studio Group Program with Chunhua Lu Role in team:Conceptual Design (70%), Technical Drawing(50%) Instructor:Yuqi Xie Time: Summer 2020 This entertainment building is located in Times Square, New York, USA, and is a highly entertaining. In the 21st century, digital entertainment is becoming the dominant form of entertainment. However, in the digital age, capital have new ways of production and profit, which leads to consumers participating in recreational activities becoming hidden producers. The Internet itself is a digital factory—a field full of labor, exploitation, and struggles—that ultimately blurs the line between daily life and labor time. Thus, content, user data and experience is used as a commodity, and be exchanged. Internet companies make the most money from this data. The project is trying to use this Entertainment Building to reveal the phenomenon that the Internet is becoming a new digital factory and to reawaken people's perceptions of the Internet.

The building is a work of "technicalism" in modern architecture.

This project explores the ambiguities of columns: structural, functional, and enclosed columns. The design can also form open, semi-open and private Spaces through the composition of the columns themselves.

Typology and combination of horizontal columns When a column gradually becomes thick from thin, it becomes a structural column that can bear the roof. And then becomes thicker, when its interior can bear the function, it becomes a functional column. At the same time, when the column is densely planted, it can even be regarded as a wall. The horizontal change of columns can create many different spaces, open space, semi open space and private space.
Typology and combination of vertical columns When a column changes vertically, when it carries the roof, it is a column. But when its height becomes only half of the original, it may become a functional space; when its height is only 50cm, it becomes furniture again. In the vertical direction, the functional properties of columns are more diverse.

Functional Possibilities and Composition The horizontal, vertical and material properties of the columns are explored and tried, and different possibilities between the columns are created according to the requirements of different spatial properties of the building. For example, small enclosed columns are more open, and stout functional columns are more able to occupy space. In addition, the structural column uses steel to weaken its substantiality, dividing space respectively.
