AGORA. The Agora; a public gathering space in ancient Greece which fulfills the function of athletics, art, politics and marketplace within the city. The Romans later adopted the idea of the agora after the conquer of Greece and converted it into something of their own, it was known as the marketplace of Caesar and Augustus.

01

CISC COMPETITION FINALIST IN COLLABORATION WITH MAGDALENA KACZMARCZYK The bus stop is a modern symbol of travel, connection, expansion. This architectural structure is what brings the rest of the city to the user. It shelters from the elements, yet is transparent and open. More often than not, the people collected under this roof are strangers bound together by the mutual goal of traversing the network of the city, enabling it to become a sort of urban assembly. An issue arises to tourists in big cities however; travel is a nuisance. Bus stops are hard to find, paths are not clear, one does not know what to see.

GROUND PLAN

The Metamorphoses by Ovid raises an interesting solution. “Make an amalgamation and give it new meaning. The traditional structure of the bus stop can now be transformed into a prominent landmark that tourists can understand anywhere. Opening up bike storage, having a ticket dispensary, a small repose, as well as an arid, sheltered hub in the same area allows public transport to become available to anyone. And in combining these elements and making the structure elegant yet hard to miss, a new meaning is derived; it is not just a bus stop, but now a public servant.

PROGRAM. The structure features three main modular components that may be rearranged and repeated in various ways to form the whole. Based on the context of the site, it may form a long row of interconnecting segments.

EAST ELEVATION

The 3 Modular structures include: [1] A bus shelter that serves as shelter from elements and emphasizes transparency. [2] A sheltered bicycle storage unit that doubles as seating space.

WEST ELEVATION

[3] A hub that provides seating and emphasizes a gathering space which includes maps.

FACADE. This project focuses on creating a micro environment in an urban setting such as a city centre or busy street. With the size restriction of 8m by 8m by 4m, the building is a retreat from the concrete jungle for one or two individuals. The program created is based on the habitant’s experience while circulating the interior. Initially from a semi open and public microclimate to a quiet and isolated construct. The façade’s design reflects this principle with the play of platonic surfaces. Such is achieved by composing transparent, translucent, and solid material to frame the outdoor environment.

OASIS. Located in the Florida Everglades, the Oasis facility serves as an off – grid transportable research station suitable for two residents. Striving for zero net energy, it features 35 photo-voltaic panels and a rainwater collecting roof. The structure’s orientation and dogtrot shape provides air flow and passive ventilation to cope with hot humid temperatures. Furthermore, construction with steel columns, engineered timber, and fiber concrete cladding allows for durability. In collaboration with Magdalena Kaczmarczyk

OFFSET. The “Offset is a studio project set in specific sites of the historic district in downtown Cambridge, Ontario. It challenges a unifying design regarding historic representation and modern architectural moments. The city is known for its Grand River and the bridges that span it. In this design, there is a basis of contrast that emphasizes the spanning elements. One portion of the building is statically grounded, while the other floats like a bridge. It features aspects of both additive and subtractive architecture; creating private living space as addition, and public court space as subtraction. Furthermore, by utilizing materials such as concrete, steel, and timber, the composition choices respect the overall aesthetic of the historic city. 1A Studio Final Design Award

ALLURE. "The Temple City, where the profane and sacred are coalesced and blurred. This city is derived from the contrasting notions of the city as being preserved, destroyed, sacred, and mundane. Everyday function is graced with the divine, as the navigator throughout their course on a secular path, comes across places of sanctity, articulated through perfect spheres offering moments of repose.

21

PLAN VIEW

22

Design precedence taken from previous studio project "The Temple City."

23

As a fragment of the Temple City, Allure aims to capture the extended threshold condition of entrance. In a city where the profane spaces dance with the sacred, a choreography of architecture is established. Taking precedence from select clips of Persona (1966) and Last Year at Marienbad (1961), Allure captures the enticing magnetism of entering a threshold.

The form of the pathway mimics a duet of dance between two partners. Inspired from the dance routine of Slip (2015), the pathways act as complimentary partners. Allure strives to actively allow people to become the dance of the city – one step, one rhythm at a time. Guiding the pacing and flow of movement, it is a choreograph of sacred curiosity that slices through the profane cluster of the city.

PARA[SITE].

KEY PLAN

27

Para[SITE] is a conceptual landscape study set along the Grand River located in Cambridge, ON. This project explores the potentials and possibilities of landscape architecture. The designed structure of this project mimics tendrils of a parasitic organism with vegatative properties. The vine-like pathways connect many existing elements on site; from the natural riverbank, to the man-made industrial bridge, to the historic floodwall bearing historic properties. It acts as an all encompassing public park while doubling as pedestrian walkway. It strives to merge together greenspace without alienating the built environment
