This project is centered on biophilic design, which focuses on bringing nature into a building. We believed this was important because natural elements, such as daylighting, greenery, and natural materials, have been proven to significantly reduce stress.

To maximize views to downtown, the rooms are placed on a quarter circle. The curve rounds out the corner, providing ample pedestrian space. My design also incorporates the renovation of a historic building to the north of the site for a new sizable venue for events.

To create a more comfortable environment overlooking the city park, each room features furniture that helps fill in the “wedge” created by the angled walls. Wood-paneled walls and floors are used to bring warmth into the guest spaces and the light blue accents serve to create a calming atmosphere. On the bedside the wall is left exposed to the concrete to reveal the structure.

A historic building is incorporated into the design as a venue space. Between the buildings a 14’ gap serves as a spillover space for larger events.
Cast in place concrete is utilized for its sound absorbing capabilities allowing for privacy between rooms. 18” square columns support the structure at the base and connects to 8” thick shear walls with 25’ spans. The fire stair and elevator shafts are used for lateral stability.

Type: Cultural Community Center Site: South Loop, Chicago IL
The concept behind this project was inspired by President Obama’s 2017 farewell speech and focuses on the idea of the non-linearity of progress. This East African Cultural center was designed as a private space for community members, as well as a place to educate the public. 13

With my teammate Alvin Mei, we created a large-scale section of Dearborn Street starting from the former Dearborn Street Station. Together we studied the materiality and history of the site. We paid close attention on the shade that was cast from each building to help us understand the effect the urban context had on our site.

The ramp is intended to be used by the public at all times. The curved ramp emphasizes the non-linearity of progress. The first floor is designed as a welcoming space for local high schoolers to come and learn more about East African culture.

Type: Artist’s Village Site: Allerton Park, Monticello IL Award: Alpha Rho Chi Anderson Scholarship
The goal for this design was to embed the village into the landscape, which is achieved through the physical connection of water and roof gardens. The buildings are designed to slowly release runoff water into a water system that connects to the creek in the center of the site. 19

To relate to the formal gardens found around the park, the cabins were placed on a grid to relate to the flow of the creek. In turn, the land is flattened out and connected via comfortable wooden walkways. Visitors are drawn to a gallery via large window openings oriented to the walkway.

Explorations
During breaks, I enjoy exploring different methods of representation via painting, sketching, and photography. I believe that practicing these techniques have enhanced my perception to the built and natural environment.

Graphic Design
In a graphic design class I explored different representation and composition styles that helped me further push my visual communication skills. Outside of my classwork I create designs such as media logos. To keep the design simple I use the tangents of letters to inform the design.
