WikiHouse is an open-source architecture project to develop CNC milled houses that anyone can download the files for and make themselves. BetterBlocks is a nonprofit that aims to empower the communities in which it works to reshape and reactivate built environments to promote the growth of healthy and vibrant neighborhoods. WikiBlocks is a combination of these ideas, empowering the community through open-source designs in order to reactivate the built environment. For this project the studio worked with BetterBlocks to develop temporary structures for local businesses to set up shop in for the weekend event. Using standard sized 3/4 plywood all of the structure’s pieces are made using a CNC mill. I developed a storefront for Akron Coffee Roasters. A faceted counter wraps around the chassis and up the side of the structure next to it. The facets fold back over to form a canopy. Gaps between the triangular facets are left intentionally in order to allow light to shine through from the inside of the counter. The storefronts were all built with the help of the community the day before the event. Furniture and other streetscape elements were CNC milled for the event.

Rompere, meaning to break in Italian, is a force to breach the inner city barrier and connect the inner city to the surrounding neighborhoods in Florence. Moving the train station in Florence from outside the center city gives new possibilities as well as obstacles to overcome. The new train station proposed by Sir Norman Foster sits outside the center of the city in the San Jacopino neighborhood. Catty-corner to the train station is a large empty site, a literal hole in the ground. It is here I propose a large multi-use program to serve the train station and to bridge the gap between the city center and the train station. Florence, being a pedestrian

city, it is important that the site embraces the urban fabric of Florence. The sites respective buildings and public spaces are each split up into three different typologies respectively. The three public space typologies are Italian piazza, urban thoroughfare, and park space. The three building types are residential, public and commercial. The buildings are oriented with the more public conscious programs towards the train station and along the way to the center of the city, while the residential building and offices are tucked away giving more privacy and intimacy. The pixelization of the facade through hexagons blurs, yet hints at what is behind. through forced perspective the pixelization is removed and reveals the graphic beneath. The graphics are discovered along the two main traffic ways, meant to educate and intrigue the passerby about the blackstone launchpad. Blackstone Launch pad is a business incubator for students and recent graduates. The facade is formed from laser cut Matboard. The Matboard is cut and folded into individual hexagons. The hexagons are then glued and stapled together on their tabs in sections. The sections are then pieced together on sheets of matboard and are glued on. The boards are then attached to the wall with screws hidden in

the hexagons. The opening size, depth, and direction of the hexagons is determined by their proximity to each of the graphics on the back board which are revealed when looking at the facade from the two primary paths through the Kent State Student Center. This installation was part of a contest to re-skin the Blackstone Launchpad in the student center. My winning project was built after the semester ended.

The second typology uses a system of gears and rails to create hanging display cases. These also move and are rearanged to create different settings for different shop types. The layout imagined is for a small clothing start up in Akron called Neighbors Apparal.

39

In the first iteration of WikiBlocks, the North Hill neighborhood of Akron, OH was used as the site. Through exploring CNC fabricated structures a versatile shop typology is envisioned. The Shop Kinetic project features two typologies of a pop up shop fabricated out of CNC cut plywood. In the first iteration display cases are attached in strips and hung from the ceiling using ropes and pulleys. This creates different configurations that create a new experience for every store while also allowing each different shop to use the displays differently. Shoppers experience the displays as countertops, ceilings, and display cases. By creating strips that create peaks and valleys it creates paths throughout the shop generates a journey. It also limits the number of rope inputs which makes the rope management easier.

51 Fourthmeal Sandusky, OH Fall 2014

As a bid to revitalize the downtown of Sandusky, Ohio, the fourth year architecture studio in the Fall of 2015 proposed a new masterplan along with new building proposals to encourage people to live, work, and visit the downtown. FourthMeal sits within a currently empty lot along Water Street in the heart of downtown. This building provides accomodation for 20 people as well as a night market to entertain and visit on a night out. Residences sit atop the market and have spacious outdoor patios to enjoy the views and ambiance of Lake Erie. The market was the central hub of commerce and socialization within the city. The traditional market has been lost among the chains of grocery stores and americanization. Through exploring market typologies, a new contemporary version is envisioned to act as a social hub in the center of the city. Opening at 4pm and staying open until late in the night, a center for late night food, drinks, and socialization is created. In combination with other proposed programs, this social market space provides an event for those who live in the city to enjoy any time of the week, while also encouraging tourists and visitors from Cedar Point to come into the city and generate economic growth.
