Boxspot is a micro retail plaza built out of reused shipping containers on Kinsman a historically underserved neighborhood. It features 7 tenant spaces and a conference room. They are organized surrounding a sunken amphitheater in the center. A tower projects from the South Western corner, turning a shipping container on end creating a viewing platform to the downtown Cleveland Skyline. My role in this project included detailing and construction documentation, The difficulties of using a shipping container as a building and detailing it elegantly became the most interesting part of the project. My role also included the design of all the interior tenant layouts.

The first phase centralized around the sanctuary renovation. The church was growing and needed more space for people during their services. The balconies were opened up to create a connection to the sanctuary. The arch was used as a repeating formal gesture throughout the space to tie the modern design with the historic structure. I was involved in the design, detailing and construction documentation of this phase.
The second phase added a second floor to the existing school building and a new main entry. The new vertical circulation added an elevator and monumental stair to the church building. The arch motif from the sanctuary was carried over to the new facade. A perforated brick screen band ran across the new second floor revealing the arched windows at night, and filtering the sun during the day. I was the lead designer of the exterior facade and had to tackle the complications of designing a brick screen.

The Lakewood Seventh Day Adventist Church is a two phase project. The first phase, which has been completed was an interior renovation of the 1920’s church building. This included a renovation of the sanctuary, and the auxiliary spaces surrounding it. The second phase is the renovation and addition of a second floor to the attached school building. The church needed a new main entry with accessible circulation that connected the 1920’s church to the 1950’s school building.

WikiHouse is an open-source architecture project to develop CNC milled houses that anyone can download the files for and make themselves. BetterBlocks is a nonprofit that aims to empower the communities in which it works to reshape and reactivate built environments to promote the growth of healthy and vibrant neighborhoods. WikiBlocks is a combination of these ideas, empowering the community through open-source designs in order to reactivate the built environment. For this project the studio worked with BetterBlocks to develop temporary structures for local businesses to set up shop in for the weekend event. Using standard sized 3/4” plywood all of the structure’s pieces are made using a CNC mill. I developed a storefront for Akron Coffee Roasters. A faceted counter wraps around the chassis and up the side of the structure next to it. The facets fold back over to form a canopy. Gaps between the triangular facets are left intentionally in order to allow light to shine through from the inside of the counter. The storefronts were all built with the help of the community the day before the event. Furniture and other streetscape elements were CNC milled for the event.

CHAIRS
This chair features two profiles that cap the ends of the chair. In typical CNC cut furniture the connections are expressed and celebrated. This chair however, connections are hidden with partial depth cuts to give this chair a connection free look. This chair is held together exclusively with the hidden joints and glue.
